Kate Spade is expanding its watch line — tapping into a strong market for athletic devices.
Today the brand launches its first sports smartwatch, created in partnership with its watch licensee Fossil. Priced at $ 275 retail, the timepieces offer heart-rate tracking, untethered GPS and Google Pay as well as weather, music and training apps.
Kate Spade’s sports smartwatch.
The style breaks with sports smartwatch convention — particularly the Apple Watch — in that it purposely features feminine design details. The watch is offered in all-pink or pink-accented color ways and features a scalloped dial.
Kate Spade’s creative director Nicola Glass said of the watch release: “Our customer is adventurous — she loves all kinds of activities, and is always looking for accessories that fit into her everyday life. We’ve incorporated some of our most iconic design elements, including the spade and scallop detailing, to give the watch a distinct Kate Spade New York look and feel, while the silicone strap and lightweight design gives her the functionality she needs without sacrificing style.”

Main message: After a nearly seven-year hiatus from Tokyo’s runways, the designers who go by the names Cabaret Aki and Jackal Kuzu were back for spring, this time with their new partner W Woods Showko. Their collection had a retro, rock ‘n’ roll-meets-hippie vibe to it, with floral caftans and printed maxi skirts shown alongside ruffled blouses, ripped jeggings, and leopard-print blazers. There was a riot of color and pattern, from multicolored zigzags to a black all-over logo print over a bright pink background. Long fringe-trimmed skirts, dresses and ponchos.
During a break from the traditional runway show, the designers sent out groups of street dancers, nontraditional models, and wrestlers wearing pieces from GCGX, the brand’s new sports line. Heavy on logos, there were sweatsuits, T-shirts, shorts and leggings in either black and white or a red, blue and yellow multicolored print.
The result: As the finale soundtrack — “Fight for Your Right” by the Beastie Boys — suggested, this was a high-energy show that certainly brought the fun. The clothes themselves were a bit more toned down than the brand’s previous fare, but will likely do well on a commercial level.
Ath-leisure has affected nearly every realm of fashion. Consumers prioritize comfort when constructing their wardrobes — even in innerwear.
It started with the bralette trend in 2015. Women in search of comfort were ditching their underwires. As the #MeToo Movement picked up steam a few years later, the trend continued. More and more women were determined to buy clothes — especially lingerie — that was functional and comfortable; the opposite of bras and panties designed for the male gaze.
Add to that the explosion of the inclusivity movement, with brands offering a wider range of sizes and skin tones. The effect was a muting of the lingerie color wheel. Vibrant reds were replaced with softer shades of pale pinks and purples in simplistic styles, as can be seen in ads for brands like ThirdLove, American Eagle Outfitters’ Aerie and True & Co.
But then something happened. Shoppers realized the options were basic. In the world of innerwear, pale pinks and baby-blue hues dominated the assortment.
Now fashion — along with comfort — is staging a comeback in the intimates industry. And a lot of it has to do with the effects of streetwear.
“The number-one trend I’m seeing in lingerie is the influence of streetwear,

He wonders, "Did Moses actually write an eyewitness account of the Exodus journey?" The Bible says yes! But mainstream scholars say no! Little does Mahoney realize that the investigation will lead to the discovery of the world’s first alphabet and its controversial connection to the writing of the first books of the Bible.

Most days it’s manageable. No more than a quiet wondering around the edges of her mind.   What has become of the baby she left behind? Smiling through the pain and suffering in silence, Leslie Laudon marches forward. Embracing the life skillfully designed by her husband Paul. Living right could be penance for an impossible choice made with an uneasy heart. Dutiful and anchoring, Leslie poured herself into her other children. As her youngest child heads off to college with her suitcases and coordinating dorm room accessories, so goes Leslie’s identity. The chaotic life of a busy working mother threatens to become dangerously quiet. Quiet enough to hear the voices she’s tried to silence for decades.   Gwen Fox was adopted by two perfect people. Noel and Millie have always treated her the same as their two biological sons. Her parents love is strong and unwavering, yet a soul-deep ache still lingers. Plagued by an unnamed, hard to explain, longing Gwen could never shake.   Riddled with doubt and dragged down by the undertow of unanswered questions, Leslie and Gwen both find their lives suddenly upended. One seeks the truth about the day she was born. The other seeks herself, the woman she was before motherhood. Before she made a choice to leave a piece of her heart lying asleep in the hospital nursery.   In this complex journey for answers, blame is abundant. Guilt is thick enough to choke on. Marriages are brought to the brink of disaster. As the ripples of the past vibrate through their lives, Gwen and Leslie realize there is no turning back. What they have put into motion cannot be stopped. The road toward the truth will be littered with casualties.

There were so many dramatic sleeves and ruffles in the private dining room of the San Vicente Bungalows in Los Angeles on Thursday night that the women wearing them had to artfully dodge one another when it came time to hug hello.
The occasion was Moda Operandi’s new holiday capsule collection with Colombian designer Johanna Ortiz, known for her dramatically fenimine silhouettes — floral prints, blooming shoulders, fluted skirts, flounces — but also marked the e-commerce company’s first significant event since opening its L.A. office earlier this year.
Lauren Santo Domingo, Moda’s cofounder and chief brand officer, said L.A. is the company’s second best market after New York, and after looking at the data the company culls from transactions, she found it’s the number-one market for Ortiz’s collections.
“Our customer is very feminine,” Santo Domingo said. “She loves color, runway dresses, and she likes full looks.”
While talking about the Moda customer and her affinity for Ortiz, Kate Hudson came up with a friend to enlist Santo Domingo’s help getting out of the patio area where the event was cordoned off. Security wasn’t letting them escape the small crowd for a quick smoke.

Main message: Hideaki Shikama runs what is possibly Japan’s coolest “sustainable” fashion brand, although he doesn’t promote it as such. He designs products that incorporate traditional skills of indigenous peoples in countries from Mexico to Kenya, and follows fair-trade practices in purchasing them. Shikama’s spring offering was rich in color, texture and pattern. Velvety floral tracksuits, bandanna prints on Indian-inspired tunics and straight trousers, intricate embroidery on oversize denim jackets, and shirts fashioned from scarf prints were combined with more pedestrian camouflage pants and workers’ overalls.
The result: An eclectic mix of multicultural influences and colorful prints came together with loose, casual silhouettes for streetwear with a refined polish.
MILAN — Milan Fashion Week Men’s is three months away, but it’s getting an unexpected boost, courtesy of Gucci. The Italian fashion brand will be returning to the January edition with a men’s wear show to be held on Jan. 14, after deciding to go coed in 2017. That would be the last day of the next edition, as Milan Fashion Week Men’s is slated to run Jan. 10 to 14, 2020.
In a letter sent to Italy’s Camera della Moda president Carlo Capasa, Marco Bizzarri, president and chief executive officer of Gucci, thanking the fashion association for the invitation to return to Milan Fashion Week Men’s, said “the Milan fashion shows embody the strength and beauty of Made in Italy. Milan Fashion Week is a central event in the fashion world’s calendar and confirms Italy’s fundamental role — for creativity and manufacturing alike — in the luxury sector.”
Bizzarri underscored that the “act of solidarity” of the companies taking part in Milan Fashion Week “have already demonstrated their capacity to work together with a common goal: to make women’s fashion week ever more beautiful, innovative and authoritative, this is what happened last month.” This is a reference to how the Camera
Inside Lehman Brothers is the autopsy of a crime by those who tried to prevent it from within. As mortgage brokers for Lehman’s subsidiary BNC, Linda Weekes and her Californian colleagues were at the forefront of the subprime crisis. In 2007 and 2008 other banks lost by the same greed and were saved by the Fed. On Wall Street they say Lehman Brothers was "sacrificed”. It was necessary to make them an example, to promise that this would not happen again. Today banks have recovered their health, and with it, their bad habits. The labels have changed but the mechanisms remain, unlocked by Donald Trump whose cabinet of advisors are the ones who drove the system into bankruptcy back in 2008. Blowout Comb, the second and final studio album from the Digable Planets, has reached the quarter-century mark of existence and improves upon the trio’s debut for several reasons we’ll cover in this piece. Beyond its dense production, muddied vocals, and pro-Black leanings, the record also retains its timelessness and kaleidoscopic lyricism.
A note from the author:
I usually steer away from injecting my personal connections to music in my writing, but it’s more so because I’m largely uninterested in reading myself wax poetic about the sounds I’ve enjoyed as it’s largely subjective. There is no reason for me to tell the reader how much this record means to me because then, it builds up an expectation that it might not meet. However, I’m compelled to share my experiences with Blowout Comb as I need to share why this album holds such a dear space in my heart.
Some who know me personally might know that I’m a member of the Five Percent Nation or the Nation of Gods and Earth, also known as “Five Percenters” and I won’t belabor that point. I also do not freely write about that part of my life in my writing because, once again, it’s not just a passing fancy, it has literally transformed my life. I am devoted to our teachings like never before and relistening to Blowout Comb this year to place my mind back into 1994 has supported that effort.
Listening to this album, 25 years later, I feel emboldened, reinvigorated. When Ish raps, “My hero died in prison, George Jackson” on the song “Jettin’,” I still raise my fist just as I did the first time I heard it when I listened to this album on my Walkman riding home on the Red Line Metro train in Washington, D.C. One has to remember: this is the mid-90s and Hip-Hop was shifting away from its Afrocentric phase and moving into becoming a heavier cultural presence in America and across the globe. Hip-Hop fans saw the surging and focused lyrics from rappers in the East, while G-Funk was enjoying a prominent period in the west.
George Jackson is also a hero of mine. I read his 1970 book Soledad Brother: The Prison Letters of George Jackson when I was around eight years old. My mother, not at all an activist, did her best to instill Black pride in my sibling and I, and this book helped. To hear Jackson’s name via a music form I love more than any other, it was transformative. Adding to that, Cee Knowledge consistently “dropping jewels” — placing Five Percent terminology and themes in his rhymes — brought the whole project home.
Then, Mecca proved she was no slouch lyrically, sometimes outshining her two male musical partners. It is fair to say that my fandom of Blowout Comb easily makes it a personal classic and one of my favorite pieces of art ever created. I must end this here because I feel compelled to walk you through every emotion I’m feeling and there’s a lot to cover here.
And I still don’t know what a creamy spy is.
Blowout Comb was released on October 18, 1994, just as Fall was taking hold on the East Coast. The group’s debut, Reachin’ (A New Refutation of Time and Space), was a Jazz-inflected breezy affair that was pushed to the forefront of the industry on the heels of its huge smash hit “Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like That),” which earned the trio a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group. The follow up was an abrupt shift in sound. Ishmael “Butterfly” Butler, Craig “Doodlebug” Irving best known as Cee Knowledge, and Mary Ann [Khalilah-Azraa Vieira] “Ladybug Mecca” Vieira, all sharp rhymers with distinct styles, saw their voices sunk deeper into the mix to the point one would need to lean in to catch every reference.
From the onset of the album, the opening track “The May 4th Movement Starring Doodlebug” set the tone early. Mecca leads the song’s chorus and potent opening verse:
One time for your mind/Two times for Mumia, Sekou/Three times for my Brooklyn dimes/Seven times for pleasure/I don’t trip, I don’t trip/We don’t trip, nah we don’t trip/We don’t trip, please don’t trip/We don’t trip, pleasure/
Now, sixteen times for the mind thieves/For my thinking Intel, I am Erica/Counterfeits don’t stop the wettest of us/We Brooklyn we define the black people equal to who, yeah/What you supply/I know when I know when I drop dip/That was in beetle’s but a snake try to spill a score/On my pride I’m in my Cammy/We bust at COINTELPRO we creamy like/F*ck that we Creamy Spies tell you scheme-y lies/We let our creamy bullets fly/Should it reflect the sun/We say yes when we think of gettin’ dipped/We says guess say yo comrades rest
The presence of unabashed Black pride was blunted somewhat by the warmness of Ish, Mecca, and Cee Knowledge clear-eyed if subdued vocals, which matched against some of the energetic production, it shouldn’t have worked considering Hip-Hop’s aggression during this period. But it succeeded according to many critics during its initial release.
The album’s lead single, “9th Wonder (Blackitolism),” was a reintroduction. If fans and critics were expecting “Cool Like That” part two, they were in for a shock. The video for the single is cinematic, showing a much Blacker Brooklyn than what exists today. Ish strolling through the borough as he ascends to the graffiti-tagged Dean Street MTA station stop, complete with his afro boldly picked out complete with a Black pick, remains just as resonant today as it did then.
As strong as Ish and Cee Knowledge’s verse were, Mecca’s closing verse also highlighted something that was sorely missing in Hip-Hop then and just correcting itself now: Black women featured as prominent fixtures of the culture. At the end of Mecca’s verse, her call and response with DJ Jazzy Joyce was a pleasant rarity as their routine and Jazzy Joyce’s focused cutting and scratching take the song out.
None of the members of Digable Planets were natives of New York. Ish hailed from Seattle, Wash., Cee Knowledge was from Philadelphia, Pa., and Mecca was raised in the Washington suburb of Silver Spring, Md. Ish and Knowledge met in Philadelphia, while Knowledge struck up a kinship with Mecca in Washington when he attended Howard University. Knowledge also crossed paths with some members of Washington, D.C.’s Hip-Hop elite in the late Father Lord of Actual Facts, better known as Tha Beggas, and that connection is made known several times over the course of the trio’s two releases.
Brooklyn, then, similar to Baltimore with The Wire, is just as much a character or group member on Blowout Comb. The transplants voiced pride in living in the New York borough, to the point one would believe that the group’s formative years were spent there. Production on the album also figures heavily in how the project should be absorbed, shifting between dusty looped samples and live instrumentation so seamless that it is hard to tell when the shift from man to machine happens. There is also the heavy influence of the Black Panthers and straight-up Black nationalism. Again, this may have been the last gasp of Afrocentrism in Hip-Hop on a grand scale, and it never once felt overbearing.
Headphone Hip-Hop isn’t an official team, far as we know, but if it were, Blowout Comb would be the shining example of it. With the muted deliveries from the group, the panning of vocals, and the aforementioned murkiness of the mix, repeated listens will uncover new treasures over time. In comparison to the clean mixes of modern-day Hip-Hop, audiophiles will spend more time picking apart the auditory flaws instead of experiencing the moment.
The years have been kind to the songs the members wrote when they were wide-eyed yet talented twenty-somethings. After mending their professional rifts and exploring creative endeavors outside of what made them notable artists, Digable Planets have reunited and are delivering their sound to crowds around the globe.
Blowout Comb is Black, bold, and Brooklyn beautiful. Still. And if musical art of high quality and value truly does live forever, it will always remain as such to anyone who approaches the album.

Barneys New York, flanked by lawyers and financial advisers for months as it tangled with landlords, vendors and investors, is showing a more vulnerable side. The retailer has found in Authentic Brands Group a prospective buyer that would scoop up its web site and brand name — and potentially keep some stores after liquidating the current stock.
In a wistful Instagram post on Friday, the retailer described the ABG bid as a “positive step forward.” But it alluded to hopes for more. Perhaps a white knight, who would come in with the promise of a going concern bid that would keep the stores humming.
“We are working hard to achieve a successful sale process that will preserve the integrity of this incredible brand and ultimately benefit our employees, customers, vendors, and other business partners. We appreciate your patience and ongoing support of Barneys 🖤” Barneys posted.
Despite the $ 271.4 million stalking-horse deal with ABG and lender B. Riley, some of the retailer’s main constituencies, like vendors and employees, appear to still be pinning their hopes on Sam Ben-Avraham. The Kith backer is still in talks with landlords, vendors and employees to put together a bid for around $ 250 million or more that would
Main message: One of the more commercial brands to show during Tokyo Fashion Week, Hare is designed by a team. For spring they turned out oversize versions of classic jackets and tops, often with exaggerated, wide sleeves, overly boxy shapes, or nearly comically large pockets. Paired with wide-legged pants, some looks bordered on shapeless, but others had asymmetric details that gave them a modern edge. The team incorporated Japanese imagery into their prints and motifs, from kabuki actors to bonsai trees, as well as traditional geometric patterns. Neutral tones of black, white, beige and brown were contrasted with pops of red, fuchsia and gold.
The result: There were some beautiful fabrics and interesting imagery, but many of the pieces themselves were either very basic or so oversized that they lost their shape, and certain details such as trailing ribbons of chiffon seemed to have no rhyme or reason and didn’t do anything to elevate the pieces.
GUCCI’S CHOICE: Milan Men’s Fashion Week is three months away, but it’s getting an unexpected boost, courtesy of Gucci. The Italian fashion brand will be returning to the January edition with a men’s wear show, after deciding to go coed in 2017. Since then, the Italian fashion company has opted to present its collections during women’s fashion week in February and September. “It seems only natural to me to present my men’s and women’s collections together. It’s the way I see the world today,” said Gucci creative director Alessandro Michele at the time.
A date for the January show has not been set yet.
However, things are changing, and after a number of slimmer men’s fashion week calendars, more labels could perhaps be enticed to follow Gucci’s example. Camera Nazionale della Moda has been working on shaking up the status quo and in July it revealed Milan Fashion Week would present different show calendars going forward. Some key Italian fashion players agreed to rotate slots in upcoming seasons to favor a more balanced calendar to benefit the system and the city. As a result, during the latest women’s Milan Fashion Week edition in September, Prada staged its show in the afternoon of the first day of shows,

At 8pm on Sunday 9th July 1978 in the rocket, a small smokey pub in Crawley Sussex, The Cure performed their very first show. Around 65 people joined in the fun. At 8pm on Saturday 7th July 2018 in Hyde park, a big green space in London, The Cure took to the stage to celebrate 40 years of playing live. Around 65,000 people joined in the fun. To capture this second historic event in all its technicolour glory, the band turned to the man responsible for most of The Cure’s iconic videos, as well as their award winning 1986 film ‘in orange’ – long-time collaborator and maverick director Tim Pope. The performance Tim Pope filmed that perfect summer evening was one of the most memorable concerts of The Cure’s long career; as giant sized screens danced, glitched and fizzled with images of raging seas, shimmering webs and broken hearts, The Cure flowed, floated, pushed, pounded and powered their way through a 29 song 135 minute spectacular, on a spellbinding trip through four decades of alternative popular music. Says pope: “I went to rehearsals in a very cramped studio just the day before the show, and sat in the group’s midst as they ran through the songs. I knew as the set list unfolded that the only way to show people the real cure was to capture not only the grand, epic dimension of their stage show, but also the close, intimate side of this band simply making music together. Never has Robert sung so well, nor has the cure played more passionately, more tightly, more powerfully.” As the film was edited together across the ensuing months, smith and pope working closely together, Cure FOH sound man Paul cornett, who had mixed the show live on the night, was brought in to help Robert create the accompanying soundscape. Mixing took place at Brighton electric studios in late 2018, final tweaks to the theatrical 5.1 audio being carried out at abbey road studios in early 2019. As with the 4k visuals pope had snared with his cameras, the aim was to create a totally immersive experience for cinema-goers. Looking back near the end of the show, Robert says to the audience “if you’d asked me in the rocket what I’d be doing in 40 years, I would have got the answer very wrong… but it’s thanks to everyone around me, and to you all as well that I’m still here… so thank you very much! It’s been a good four decades… here’s to the next one!” In march 2019 smith and the rest of The Cure – Simon Gallup, Jason Cooper, Roger O’Donnell and reeves Gabrels – were inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame, announcing exciting news later that same night about the progress of the group’s first new studio album in more than a decade. “Anniversary 1978-2018” was and is The Cure drawing a quite remarkable line between their past and their future.

White Fang  is a novel by American author Jack London (1876–1916) — and the name of the book's eponymous character, a wild wolfdog. First serialized in  Outing  magazine, it was published in 1906. The story details White Fang's journey to domestication in Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush. It is a companion novel (and a thematic mirror) to London's best-known work,  The Call of the Wild , which is about a kidnapped, domesticated dog embracing his wild ancestry to survive and thrive in the wild. Much of  White Fang  is written from the viewpoint of the titular canine character, enabling London to explore how animals view their world and how they view humans.  White Fang  examines the violent world of wild animals and the equally violent world of humans. The book also explores complex themes including morality and redemption. As early as 1925, the story was adapted to film, and it has since seen several more cinematic adaptations, including a 1991 film starring Ethan Hawke and a 2018 original television series for Netflix.

Never mind the rules of Zombieland. The rules governing Hollywood dictate that anything successful gets a sequel, even if you have to wait a decade to tap into it. Those have been fruitful years for the stars of “Zombieland: Double Tap,” providing key assets to a movie that offers gore, comedy and just plain silliness, but falls somewhat short of a complete meal.

Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta’s Scrapp De Leon is no longer in trouble with the law, but his brother now is. According to reports, he was arrested on the charge of sex trafficking.
Lyndon “Sas” Smith, 26, who has appeared on Mona Scott-Young’s famed reality series in a supporting role, is in a lot of trouble. The Atlanta Journal-Constitutionreports that Smith and his accomplice, James Ruffin, 27, planned on traveling out of Georgia to pimp two teenage girls according to authorities.
Smith, who is a rapper and member of the hip-hop group Da Razkalz CrU along with Ruffin, is currently being held in DeKalb County Jail. They have both been slapped with charges of criminal attempt to traffic persons for sexual servitude and unlawful effort to pimp a person less than 18 years of age.
The ages of the two teen girls have not been released.
“Sas” is the brother of now Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta regular Scrapp DeLeon and the son of Karen King, who is also featured on the show. Scrapp recently got promoted to series regular this past season after he was released from prison. King also has had multiple run-ins with the law. She has a long rap sheet with court docs from 1980-2005. They detail she was convicted of grand theft, using counterfeit money, trafficking counterfeit goods, armed robber, and burglary in multiple states.
“Sas” escaped serious injury after being shot in the back of the head back in July 2016. We won’t be shocked if here more about his situation when Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta returns.
