"This truly is Armageddon." said the local Athens, GA meteorologist on the seemingly sub-zero night last winter that the Drive-By Truckers were scheduled to play live at the 40 Watt. Luckily no snow, ice or hail could stop the band from firing up the room as they performed their critically acclaimed 12th LP, English Oceans, in full. Titled Black Ice Verite, fans will be able to re-live this concert experience as a live film. As the final track on English Oceans,"Grand Canyon" brings together both the record and the band's 40 Watt performance, as it is an emotionally overwhelming elegy for Craig Lieske. Lieske was a longtime member of DBT's touring family, a former manager of the 40 Watt Club and a key player in the city's experimental music scene. Lieske died suddenly of a heart attack in January 2013 following the first night of the band's three-night homecoming stand in Athens. English Oceans is dedicated to him.

It's such an important record for us and our progression as a band and the visual representation captures the moods of our tragic tale so well. It's the perfect way to wrap up the last two years we've been living with this album day in and day out!"

Emerson, Lake and Palmer, known to all as ELP, were progressive rock’s first supergroup. Keith Emerson (keyboards) came from The Nice, Greg Lake (guitar, bass & vocals) from King Crimson and Carl Palmer (drums) from Atomic Rooster. Formed in 1970 they were an instant success and went on to have a series of hugely successful albums throughout the seventies before splitting up in the early eighties. Reunited in the early nineties they produced a new album, Black Moon, and began to tour again. In 1997 they embarked on a world tour which included this performance at the Montreux Jazz Festival on July 7. It is the only film from this tour that is available. The set includes ELP classics from across their career including Karn Evil 9 (“Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends”), Hoedown, Take A Pebble, Lucky Man, Tarkus, Pictures At An Exhibition and Fanfare For The Common Man. Also featured are rare tracks that have never appeared on ELP studio albums such as Touch And Go, Dance Creole and Carmina Burana. The booklet features individual sleeve notes from Keith Emerson, Greg Lake and Carl Palmer.

These two concerts from Montreux in 1991 and 1992 catch Tori Amos right at the start of her solo career. The first, from July 1991, was filmed a few months before the release of her "Little Earthquakes" album and the second from July 1992 followed a few months after. There is a fascinating progression from one year to the next as she grows in confidence and skill as a live performer, buoyed by the critical and commercial success of the album. Naturally most of the songs are taken from "Little Earthquakes" but there are also rare songs from her various EPs released across the two years which didn't make it onto the album including her distinctive takes on Led Zeppelin's "Whole Lotta Love" and "Thank You" and Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit".

This time around new artists were added to the lineup, including Jeff Tweedy and members of Wilco, KT Tunstall, and Bic Runga. The Met assembled an ideal cast for François Girard’s acclaimed new production of Wagner’s final masterpiece. Jonas Kaufmann in the title role of the fool “made wise by compassion” is as convincing vocally as he is haunting dramatically, delivering a thoroughly moving portrayal. René Pape is equally compelling as Gurnemanz, the veteran Knight of the Grail, and Katarina Dalayman thrillingly brings out the dual sides of Kundry. Peter Mattei is Amfortas, the anguished ruler of the Grail’s kingdom, and Evgeny Nikitin sings the evil magician Klingsor. Daniele Gatti on the podium reveals both the serenity and dramatic tension of what may be Wagner’s greatest score.

Amon Amarth's triumphant showing at Summer Breeze 2017 truly hammers home that after a quarter of a century they are at the height of their powers. Having played the German festival numerous times over the years and loving the family vibe they have always experienced, Amon Amarth leapt at the chance to appear twice in the same year. Playing a secret, smaller scale set that focused primarily on older material and then headlining the main stage with full production – including their giant sea serpent and plenty of fire, allowing them to showcase their songs at their best, though putting together setlists from such a mighty catalogue was not the easiest of tasks. "For the first night we wanted to write a set that the fans would enjoy by wholly diving into our back catalogue, but we knew we needed to add some newer material too," explains guitarist Olavi Mikkonen. The riveting performances combined with the fevered reaction of those in attendance makes you feel like part of the audience.

This latest addition to the acclaimed From The Vaults series was filmed at the San Jose Arena on The Rolling Stones’ No Security tour, which ran from January to June 1999 through North America and Europe. It followed on from the colossal Bridges To Babylon tour and took its name from the “No Security” live album recorded on that 1997/98 tour. In reaction to the huge stadiums played on Bridges To Babylon the conscious decision was made to book the band into smaller venues for the initial North American leg of the No Security tour. This show was filmed in April 1999 in front of an audience of a little over 30,000 (intimate by Rolling Stones standards!) at the end of the North American dates. Previously unreleased, it captures the band in top form playing a set that spans from mid-sixties hit singles up to the then current Bridges To Babylon album.

The genius director Patrice Chéreau (From the House of the Dead) didn’t live to see his great Elektra production, previously presented in Aix and Milan, make it to the stage of the Met. But his overpowering vision lives on with soprano Nina Stemme—unmatched today in the heroic female roles of Strauss and Wagner—who portrays Elektra’s primal quest for vengeance for the murder of her father, Agamemnon. Legendary mezzo-soprano Waltraud Meier is chilling as Elektra’s fearsome mother, Klytämnestra. Soprano Adrianne Pieczonka and bass-baritone Eric Owens are Elektra’s troubled siblings. Chéreau’s musical collaborator Esa-Pekka Salonen conducts Strauss’s mighty take on Greek myth.

John Williams has become an irreplaceable figure in American popular culture. He ranks as the best-known creator of movie music in Hollywood history, with themes and scores that are instantly recognizable to listeners around the world.Perhaps none of Williams’ music is more famous than that of Star Wars (1977),which won the composer his third Academy Award. Director George Lucas later recalled: “About 90 percent of the Star Wars films are music. It’s done in a very old-fashioned style, almost like silent films, so the music kind of tells the story.A lot of the emotional content is carried through the music as much as by the scenes themselves.”
The extract “Throne Room and Finale,” from the conclusion of the original film, accompanies a ceremony honoring the victorious Luke Skywalker,Han Solo, and Chewbacca, and the end-credits roll. As Williams said in 1977:“I used a theme I am very fond of over the presentation of the medals; it has a kind of Land of Hope and Glory feeling to it, almost like coronation music.” For the finale, he invokes Luke’s theme, the Rebel spaceship fanfare, Princess Leia’s theme, and others from that first in what would eventually become a six-film series spanning nearly three decades, all scored by Williams.

In the autumn of 2016 the Bavarian State Opera staged Donizetti's La Favorite in the original French version, with Elina Garanca making her debut in the title role in a staged production of this grand opera. Director Amelie Niermeyer's dense and minutely choreographed production had the intimacy of a chamber opera, the tiniest gestures shedding light on the action and allowing Niermeyer to bring out the opera's feminist potential. Alongside the Fernand of Matthew Polenzani and the Alphonse of Mariusz Kwiecien, Elina Garanca painted the portrait of a woman who, able to see through others' motives, is overcome by disillusionment but who by controlling her two lovers succeeds in remaining their superior. The Suddeutsche Zeitung enthused: "The fabulous Elina Garanca sings with exceptional tonal beauty and emotional restraint, making her death scene profoundly moving … Polenzani possesses an astonishing musical and dramatic intelligence … coupled with sensational vocal resources."

"Rammstein in Amerika" tells the story of this unique band through the prism of the cultural exchange its members have had with the world's pre-eminent superpower. Home movies and private photos going back to the 1980s take us behind the Iron Curtain to the bands whose members would one day fuse to create Rammstein, while eye-opening behind-the-scenes footage, interviews and incredible concert excerpts from across the years are woven together to tell their amazing tale. We hear from the record execs, PR men, agents and promoters that thought Rammstein could never make it in America, and who lived to eat their words. The key to Rammstein's success was the overwhelming shock and awe of their live show, a pyrotechnic extravaganza so intense that, to this day, the band can't play within the city limits of Chicago due to rules dating back to the great fire of 1871. Rammstein aficionado Kiefer Sutherland puts their challenging American journey in context, and the film is peppered with tributes and anecdotes from other famous fans: Iggy Pop, Steven Tyler, Marilyn Manson, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Moby, Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and many more. "Rammstein in Amerika" is an improbable but ultimately triumphant love story, fraught with adversity, misunderstanding and a heartening amount of cultural give and take. It's a tale of Eastblock otherness in the American heartlands, of an industry that loves categorisation being invaded by a band that love to confuse, polarise and make people think – that have no qualms about presenting electronica and homoerotica to a rock crowd not famous for tolerating either, and getting arrested for their troubles. "Rammstein in Amerika" offers an all-access window onto this trans-Atlantic rock'n'roll odyssey. By turns naive, touching and wild, it is a story of an artistic communion with the fans that transcends all cultural barriers, of thunderous music and, of course, of fire. "Making of Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da" is a short film about the making of Rammstein's Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da album. In 2008, after taking an unprecedented year off, the members of Rammstein reconvened on a hilltop in Sonoma in northern California to start work on what would become their "Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da" album. This 21-minute film tells the inside story of those sessions.

The concept: 150 journalists, 50 diehard fans and Rihanna, all boarding the same 777 plane for seven shows in seven countries in just seven days. The goal: to celebrate the release of 'Unapologetic' – Rihanna's seventh album in seven years – as well as achieve an unprecedented milestone in rock 'n' roll history. The result: exhilaration, excess, exhaustion, streaking journalists, screaming fans and contagious hysteria not seen on the live circuit in decades. This exclusive 77-minute, 7-second film boasts a myriad moments and perspectives on the controversial tour, ranging from the world's press, celebrity friends, the fans (aka The Rihanna Navy), the flight crew, Rihanna's band and team, as well as revealing insights from the singer herself. In addition, there are powerful, intimate renditions of some of her biggest hits – including 'Diamonds', 'Stay', 'We Found Love', 'Only Girl In The World' and 'S&M', amongst others – as shot on location in Mexico City, Toronto, Stockholm, Paris, Berlin, London and New York. The 777 Tour has already become synonymous with rock 'n' roll legend and much discussion – but what really happened on that plane? This is the documentary that reveals all.

In Genesis 32 we read the story of Jacob wrestling with God through the night. On the other side of Jacob’s divine encounter was a new name, a new blessing, a new identity and a new way of walking (literally). Will we be a worshipping people who are not content to sleep through the night (spiritually speaking) and wake in the morning unchanged? Like Jacob, will we enter into the wrestle with God, dare to know Him more intimately and be changed in the process? This is the premise for Hillsong Worship’s 26th live praise and worship album. The title, “THERE IS MORE”, truly is a statement-of-belief more than a record title. As Brooke Ligertwood writes, “THERE IS MORE at stake than we dare realise – souls, communities, families, nations on the other side of our wrestle through the night seasons. Our personal freedom is for corporate revival. THERE IS MORE of God and more to God and His love than we can possibly conceive of.” With songs such as, “Who You Say I Am”, “Be Still”, “The Passion” and “New Wine”, “THERE IS MORE” strikes the balance of contemplative devotion and powerful declarations of praise for both individuals and congregations alike.

Genre: Concert Films

Price: $ 12.99

Release Date: October 29, 2007

Following their record-breaking South American tour, the Montreal shows on November 24 and 25, 1981 were to be the only concerts by Queen ever shot on film – indeed they were the first group to shoot an entire show in full cinema format 35mm. These releases offer the best ever sound and picture quality on a Queen concert release. Always a great live band, with two years non-stop touring behind them and Freddie Mercury in front of them, Queen excelled themselves with the cameras rolling. The footage has been digitally restored from the original film and the sound has been newly mixed and mastered for DTS Surround Sound and PCM Stereo from the original multi-track tapes. “Hello Montreal…long time no see. You wanna get crazy?” asks Freddie as the band tear into their alternative ‘fast’ version of We Will Rock You, and from there on Queen show their hard rock roots, slowing down only for Love of My Life and the more mid-tempo Under Pressure, notably being performed live for the first time in this concert. The real joy to be had in watching Freddie, Brian, Roger and John performing here is that, unlike any other Queen concert film available, this delivers raw Queen. This is before the Hot Space album, before keyboards would find a place in the band’s touring line up; this is simply four musicians in total cohesion. Originally titled, “We Will Rock You”, this film was first launched at the Cannes Film Festival in May 1983 – as only Queen could. It was then released in North America (September 1984), becoming the first commercially available film of Queen in concert. For this special edition, the picture has been digitally restored from the original 35mm negative.

Hot August Night III (Live At The Greek Theatre, Los Angeles / 2012)

Neil Diamond

Genre: Concert Films

Price: $ 19.99

Release Date: August 17, 2018

Hot August Night III commemorates one of the modern rock era’s most electrifying live performers, Neil Diamond. Hot August Night III, is a live concert performance that features the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer’s triumphant return to the legendary Greek Theatre in Los Angeles in August 2012. This magical performance also served as Diamond’s 40th anniversary celebration of the original multiplatinum-selling Hot August Night collection that was recorded at the very same venue on August 24, 1972. Diamond’s concert performance and onstage prowess is in full evidence on Hot August Night III, which features 33 songs including 31 of the Songwriters Hall of Famer’s greatest hits. Clocking in at over 2 hours and 20 minutes in length, his video contains rare behind-the-scenes footage with both the band and the crew, showcasing the undeniably palpable energy surrounding Diamond’s return to this most historic venue. Every album from Diamond and every concert is a chance to renew that commitment he made to his fans so long ago—to give them everything he possibly can. With many more years to go, the mission remains the same now as it was at the start: “I'd like just to continue to write songs that express my own life and feelings,” Diamond told Variety. “Writing songs and performing for an audience is such a satisfying creative outlet that I can't think of anything else I could do to top it.” In his lifetime, we have come to expect nothing less. From the fine acoustic twang of “Forever in Blue Jeans” to the pure Americana swing of “Kentucky Woman” to the eternal singalong sunshine of “Sweet Caroline” to the raw emotionality of “I Am I Said” to the welcoming arms of “America,” Hot August Night III cements Diamond’s mastery of the live stage and his unique connection with audiences the world over. Released in December 1972, the original Hot August Night — the title of which was culled from the opening line to one of Diamond’s most celebrated tracks, 1969’s “Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show” — captures the artist at the height of his live powers on the evening of one of his ten sold-out shows at the Greek that August. Of these nights, Robert Hilburn of The Los Angeles Times declared, “His 1972 Hot August Night stand at the Greek remains among the most celebrated series of shows by a mainstream pop-rock performer ever in Los Angeles.” Hot August Night II followed 15 years later in 1987, chronicling Diamond’s command of the Greek stage in August 1986. Subsequent set additions such as the pleading “September Morn,” the chart-topping ballad “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers,” and the intimate glow of “Heartlight” all continued to illustrate the ongoing evolution of Diamond’s deepening audience connection. In 2009, Hot August Night/NYC was released on CD and DVD featuring songs from recorded from Diamond's four shows at Madison Square Garden during his 2008 tour. An hour-long special featuring songs edited from the DVD was shown on CBS on the night of the disc's release which was watched by 13 million viewers. And now, with the endless dynamic enthusiasm that’s apparent all throughout Hot August Night III, Neil Diamond once again sweetly proves that good times never seemed so good.

Black Label Society, formed in the late nineties by legendary guitar hero Zakk Wylde, have established themselves at the forefront of heavy metal with a series of hard riffing and hugely successful albums alongside worldwide tours that have cemented their reputation as one of the most powerful live bands of their generation. "Unblackened" finds Black Label Society in a mellower mood in a performance filmed at Club Nokia in Los Angeles earlier this year. The concert showcases the band's songs with a greater use of acoustic instruments but without losing any of their power and intensity. Zakk Wylde leads from the front as always, performing here on both guitar and piano and demonstrating the subtler side of his music alongside the blistering solos that his fans know and love. This is definitely a live concert not to be missed!

Joni Mitchell: Both Sides Now – Live At The Isle Of Wight Festival 1970

Joni Mitchell

Genre: Concert Films

Price: $ 12.99

Release Date: September 14, 2018

When Joni Mitchell took the stage Saturday afternoon, August 29th 1970, the Isle of Wight Festival had already seen its share of tumult. The promoters created, at great expense, one of the era’s finest concert lineups, including Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Miles Davis, Emerson Lake and Palmer, The Doors and many more. Fences were broken down while a radical movement were pushing to declare the venture a free festival. All these artists played through what Joni termed “mountains of amplifiers” and could easily drown out any unruly audience. Joni, however, had only an acoustic guitar, a dulcimer, a piano., and her own singular voice. Joni Mitchell herself leads the viewer through a blow-by-blow of one of the most difficult performances of her career, face-to-face with what she calls “a beast”: a rowdy audience who literally try to hijack the show. Nearly breaking down, she summons the strength to win their respect and quiet them down. She delivers an incredibly emotional and ultimately triumphant performance, including her iconic masterpieces “Woodstock”, “Big Yellow Taxi”, and “Both Sides Now”. Academy Award-Winning Director Murray Lerner (Mao To Mozart, Festival!) creates a masterful addition to the Isle of Wight canon of films with Joni’s excellent performance. The concert/documentary film features Joni Mitchell in a modern interview, explaining the events and her reactions. The complete performance is also intercut with vintage footage from the festival attendees and the promoters to give better context to Joni’s personal recollections from the Isle of Wight in what is one of the most unique and memorable performances of the era.

This film takes an intimate look at Jack Johnson's music and tour greening initiatives. When Jack goes on the road, he doesn't just show up and play music. The tour partners with local non-profits, local food vendors and strives to leave a lasting positive impact. The entire tour is an extension of the environmentally conscious and socially engaged life he leads along with his wife, Kim. After years on the road, playing venues around the globe, the Johnson's have established an inspiring way of touring with a focus on creating as little impact on the earth as possible. Along the way, the tour gives a platform to dozens of local non-profits working to educate and inspire others to make choices that benefit our communities and the greater global environment. While following Jack's 2014 west coast tour, this film highlights the Johnson's Kokua Hawaii Foundation, the All At Once campaign, and several non-profit partners and businesses focusing on plastic free initiatives and sustainable local food systems. Additionally, the film highlights the unique way in which tour is run. From traveling on biodiesel-powered buses, to sourcing organic and locally grown meals to carefully disposing of waste created along the way. The goal of the tour and this documentary is to inspire people to get involved, make the right choices, and enjoy the music along the way.

The head of the gods, Wotan (Bryn Terfel), needs to pay the giants Fasolt and Fafner (Franz-Josef Selig and Hans-Peter König) for building Valhala, the new home for the gods, but doesn’t want to pay the agreed price—Freia (Wendy Bryn Harmer), the goddess of youth. Loge, the god of fire (Richard Croft), tells Wotan about an enormous horde of gold the evil Nibelung Alberich (Eric Owens) has stolen from the Rhinemaidens. By renouncing love and forging a ring from the gold Alberich has become enormously powerful, but Wotan and Loge trick Alberich and take the hoard from him. Enraged, Alberich puts a curse on the ring: it will bring death to anyone who possesses it, a curse that soon costs the giant Fasolt his life. As the gods cross over the rainbow bridge into Valhalla, far below the Rhinemaidens lament the loss of their gold. Conducted by James Levine.
