In the autumn of 2016 the Bavarian State Opera staged Donizetti's La Favorite in the original French version, with Elina Garanca making her debut in the title role in a staged production of this grand opera. Director Amelie Niermeyer's dense and minutely choreographed production had the intimacy of a chamber opera, the tiniest gestures shedding light on the action and allowing Niermeyer to bring out the opera's feminist potential. Alongside the Fernand of Matthew Polenzani and the Alphonse of Mariusz Kwiecien, Elina Garanca painted the portrait of a woman who, able to see through others' motives, is overcome by disillusionment but who by controlling her two lovers succeeds in remaining their superior. The Suddeutsche Zeitung enthused: "The fabulous Elina Garanca sings with exceptional tonal beauty and emotional restraint, making her death scene profoundly moving … Polenzani possesses an astonishing musical and dramatic intelligence … coupled with sensational vocal resources."

"Rammstein in Amerika" tells the story of this unique band through the prism of the cultural exchange its members have had with the world's pre-eminent superpower. Home movies and private photos going back to the 1980s take us behind the Iron Curtain to the bands whose members would one day fuse to create Rammstein, while eye-opening behind-the-scenes footage, interviews and incredible concert excerpts from across the years are woven together to tell their amazing tale. We hear from the record execs, PR men, agents and promoters that thought Rammstein could never make it in America, and who lived to eat their words. The key to Rammstein's success was the overwhelming shock and awe of their live show, a pyrotechnic extravaganza so intense that, to this day, the band can't play within the city limits of Chicago due to rules dating back to the great fire of 1871. Rammstein aficionado Kiefer Sutherland puts their challenging American journey in context, and the film is peppered with tributes and anecdotes from other famous fans: Iggy Pop, Steven Tyler, Marilyn Manson, Gene Simmons, Paul Stanley, Moby, Chad Smith (Red Hot Chili Peppers) and many more. "Rammstein in Amerika" is an improbable but ultimately triumphant love story, fraught with adversity, misunderstanding and a heartening amount of cultural give and take. It's a tale of Eastblock otherness in the American heartlands, of an industry that loves categorisation being invaded by a band that love to confuse, polarise and make people think – that have no qualms about presenting electronica and homoerotica to a rock crowd not famous for tolerating either, and getting arrested for their troubles. "Rammstein in Amerika" offers an all-access window onto this trans-Atlantic rock'n'roll odyssey. By turns naive, touching and wild, it is a story of an artistic communion with the fans that transcends all cultural barriers, of thunderous music and, of course, of fire. "Making of Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da" is a short film about the making of Rammstein's Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da album. In 2008, after taking an unprecedented year off, the members of Rammstein reconvened on a hilltop in Sonoma in northern California to start work on what would become their "Liebe Ist Fur Alle Da" album. This 21-minute film tells the inside story of those sessions.

In Genesis 32 we read the story of Jacob wrestling with God through the night. On the other side of Jacob’s divine encounter was a new name, a new blessing, a new identity and a new way of walking (literally). Will we be a worshipping people who are not content to sleep through the night (spiritually speaking) and wake in the morning unchanged? Like Jacob, will we enter into the wrestle with God, dare to know Him more intimately and be changed in the process? This is the premise for Hillsong Worship’s 26th live praise and worship album. The title, “THERE IS MORE”, truly is a statement-of-belief more than a record title. As Brooke Ligertwood writes, “THERE IS MORE at stake than we dare realise – souls, communities, families, nations on the other side of our wrestle through the night seasons. Our personal freedom is for corporate revival. THERE IS MORE of God and more to God and His love than we can possibly conceive of.” With songs such as, “Who You Say I Am”, “Be Still”, “The Passion” and “New Wine”, “THERE IS MORE” strikes the balance of contemplative devotion and powerful declarations of praise for both individuals and congregations alike.

Queen

Genre: Concert Films

Price: $ 12.99

Release Date: October 29, 2007

Following their record-breaking South American tour, the Montreal shows on November 24 and 25, 1981 were to be the only concerts by Queen ever shot on film – indeed they were the first group to shoot an entire show in full cinema format 35mm. These releases offer the best ever sound and picture quality on a Queen concert release. Always a great live band, with two years non-stop touring behind them and Freddie Mercury in front of them, Queen excelled themselves with the cameras rolling. The footage has been digitally restored from the original film and the sound has been newly mixed and mastered for DTS Surround Sound and PCM Stereo from the original multi-track tapes. “Hello Montreal…long time no see. You wanna get crazy?” asks Freddie as the band tear into their alternative ‘fast’ version of We Will Rock You, and from there on Queen show their hard rock roots, slowing down only for Love of My Life and the more mid-tempo Under Pressure, notably being performed live for the first time in this concert. The real joy to be had in watching Freddie, Brian, Roger and John performing here is that, unlike any other Queen concert film available, this delivers raw Queen. This is before the Hot Space album, before keyboards would find a place in the band’s touring line up; this is simply four musicians in total cohesion. Originally titled, “We Will Rock You”, this film was first launched at the Cannes Film Festival in May 1983 – as only Queen could. It was then released in North America (September 1984), becoming the first commercially available film of Queen in concert. For this special edition, the picture has been digitally restored from the original 35mm negative.

Hot August Night III (Live At The Greek Theatre, Los Angeles / 2012)

Neil Diamond

Genre: Concert Films

Price: $ 19.99

Release Date: August 17, 2018

Hot August Night III commemorates one of the modern rock era’s most electrifying live performers, Neil Diamond. Hot August Night III, is a live concert performance that features the Rock & Roll Hall of Famer’s triumphant return to the legendary Greek Theatre in Los Angeles in August 2012. This magical performance also served as Diamond’s 40th anniversary celebration of the original multiplatinum-selling Hot August Night collection that was recorded at the very same venue on August 24, 1972. Diamond’s concert performance and onstage prowess is in full evidence on Hot August Night III, which features 33 songs including 31 of the Songwriters Hall of Famer’s greatest hits. Clocking in at over 2 hours and 20 minutes in length, his video contains rare behind-the-scenes footage with both the band and the crew, showcasing the undeniably palpable energy surrounding Diamond’s return to this most historic venue. Every album from Diamond and every concert is a chance to renew that commitment he made to his fans so long ago—to give them everything he possibly can. With many more years to go, the mission remains the same now as it was at the start: “I'd like just to continue to write songs that express my own life and feelings,” Diamond told Variety. “Writing songs and performing for an audience is such a satisfying creative outlet that I can't think of anything else I could do to top it.” In his lifetime, we have come to expect nothing less. From the fine acoustic twang of “Forever in Blue Jeans” to the pure Americana swing of “Kentucky Woman” to the eternal singalong sunshine of “Sweet Caroline” to the raw emotionality of “I Am I Said” to the welcoming arms of “America,” Hot August Night III cements Diamond’s mastery of the live stage and his unique connection with audiences the world over. Released in December 1972, the original Hot August Night — the title of which was culled from the opening line to one of Diamond’s most celebrated tracks, 1969’s “Brother Love’s Traveling Salvation Show” — captures the artist at the height of his live powers on the evening of one of his ten sold-out shows at the Greek that August. Of these nights, Robert Hilburn of The Los Angeles Times declared, “His 1972 Hot August Night stand at the Greek remains among the most celebrated series of shows by a mainstream pop-rock performer ever in Los Angeles.” Hot August Night II followed 15 years later in 1987, chronicling Diamond’s command of the Greek stage in August 1986. Subsequent set additions such as the pleading “September Morn,” the chart-topping ballad “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers,” and the intimate glow of “Heartlight” all continued to illustrate the ongoing evolution of Diamond’s deepening audience connection. In 2009, Hot August Night/NYC was released on CD and DVD featuring songs from recorded from Diamond's four shows at Madison Square Garden during his 2008 tour. An hour-long special featuring songs edited from the DVD was shown on CBS on the night of the disc's release which was watched by 13 million viewers. And now, with the endless dynamic enthusiasm that’s apparent all throughout Hot August Night III, Neil Diamond once again sweetly proves that good times never seemed so good.

Black Label Society, formed in the late nineties by legendary guitar hero Zakk Wylde, have established themselves at the forefront of heavy metal with a series of hard riffing and hugely successful albums alongside worldwide tours that have cemented their reputation as one of the most powerful live bands of their generation. "Unblackened" finds Black Label Society in a mellower mood in a performance filmed at Club Nokia in Los Angeles earlier this year. The concert showcases the band's songs with a greater use of acoustic instruments but without losing any of their power and intensity. Zakk Wylde leads from the front as always, performing here on both guitar and piano and demonstrating the subtler side of his music alongside the blistering solos that his fans know and love. This is definitely a live concert not to be missed!

Joni Mitchell

Genre: Concert Films

Price: $ 12.99

Release Date: September 14, 2018

When Joni Mitchell took the stage Saturday afternoon, August 29th 1970, the Isle of Wight Festival had already seen its share of tumult. The promoters created, at great expense, one of the era’s finest concert lineups, including Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Miles Davis, Emerson Lake and Palmer, The Doors and many more. Fences were broken down while a radical movement were pushing to declare the venture a free festival. All these artists played through what Joni termed “mountains of amplifiers” and could easily drown out any unruly audience. Joni, however, had only an acoustic guitar, a dulcimer, a piano., and her own singular voice. Joni Mitchell herself leads the viewer through a blow-by-blow of one of the most difficult performances of her career, face-to-face with what she calls “a beast”: a rowdy audience who literally try to hijack the show. Nearly breaking down, she summons the strength to win their respect and quiet them down. She delivers an incredibly emotional and ultimately triumphant performance, including her iconic masterpieces “Woodstock”, “Big Yellow Taxi”, and “Both Sides Now”. Academy Award-Winning Director Murray Lerner (Mao To Mozart, Festival!) creates a masterful addition to the Isle of Wight canon of films with Joni’s excellent performance. The concert/documentary film features Joni Mitchell in a modern interview, explaining the events and her reactions. The complete performance is also intercut with vintage footage from the festival attendees and the promoters to give better context to Joni’s personal recollections from the Isle of Wight in what is one of the most unique and memorable performances of the era.

From the bone-crunching noise they make to the sexual sedition and craftily choreographed ultraviolence of their imagery, industrial rock giants Rammstein tirelessly court controversy and refuse to entertain the merest notion of compromise. They sing only in German, confuse and confound with relish and laugh at the hypocrisy of the guardians of taste. And yet, despite or because of this, they have become one of the biggest acts on the planet. Now, from one of the most extraordinary bands in rock, comes one of the most extraordinary rock films. The stunning 102-minute concertfilm includes the entirety of Rammstein's legendary concert at New York's Madison Square Garden on December 11th 2010, the show that sold out in 20 minutes and marked the band's live return to the States after a ten-year absence.

The Black Keys' new concert DVD, Live at the Crystal Ballroom, reflects the no-frills genius of the drums-and-guitar duo's studio sound: It's a refreshingly straightforward video document of their April 4, 2008 sold-out gig at Portland, Oregon's Crystal Ballroom, featuring seventeen songs culled from all five of the pair's albums. Director Lance Bangs – who has made videos for the Arcade Fire, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Sonic Youth as well as directing R.E.M.'s Road Movie – keeps his small camera crew focused on the stage, getting up close and sweaty with guitarist-singer Dan Auerbach and drummer Patrick Carney. Occasionally, he'll pull back to acknowledge the head-bobbing crowd pressed close to the stage, their hands reaching out to Auerbach. There are no visual pyrotechnics, no elaborate editing, no backstage cutaways, yet the show is riveting from start to finish and the feel of the music in that room is nothing less than triumphant.

During their stay, Billy and his family, along with musicians, staff, and a huge press entourage spent their days interacting with the Russian people, forging true bonds of friendship wherever they went. For the first time, A Matter Of Trust – The Bridge To Russia: The Concert presents an expanded version of what fans saw and heard over a quarter-century ago. The newly remastered concert film, originally directed by Wayne Isham, adds seven previously unreleased songs to the original 1987 VHS release Live From Leningrad, including a bonus performance of “Pressure.” The performances have been completely remasterd from the original 35 millimeter negatives for the best audiovisual quality. Billy has always believed that going to Russia was the most important thing he’d ever done as a performer. The freedom and excitement of his presence permanently affected the country and played a role in the ultimate dissolution of the U.S.S.R. in 1991.

Both Sides Now: Live At the Isle of Wight Festival 1970

In the endless magic hour of the Icelandic summer, Sigur Rós played a series of concerts around their homeland. Combining both the biggest and smallest shows of their career, the entire tour was filmed, and provides a unique insight into one of the world’s shyest and least understood bands captured live in their natural habitat. The culmination of more than a year spent promoting their hugely successful “Takk…” album around the world, the Icelandic tour was free to all-comers and went largely unannounced. Playing in deserted fish factories, outsider art follies, far-flung community halls, sylvan fields, darkened caves and the hoof print of Odin’s horse, Sleipnir, the band reached an entirely new spectrum of the Icelandic population; young and old, ardent and merely quizzical, entirely by word-of-mouth.The question of the way Sigur Rós’s music relates to, and is influenced by, their environment has been reduced to a journalistic cliché about glacial majesty and fire and ice, but there is no doubt that the band are inextricably linked to the land in which they were forged. And the decision to film this first-ever Sigur Rós film in Iceland was, in the end, ineluctable.Shot using a largely Icelandic crew (to minimize Eurovision-style scenic-wonder overload), Heima – which means both “at home” and “homeland” – is an attempt to make a film every bit as big, beautiful and unfettered as a Sigur Rós album. As such it was always going to be something of a grand folio, but one, which taking in no fewer than 15 locations around Iceland (including the country’s largest ever concert at the band’s Reykjavik homecoming), is never less than epic in its ambition.Material from all four of the band’s albums is featured, including many rare and notable moments. Among these are a heart-stopping rendition of the previously unreleased “Gitardjamm”, filmed inside a derelict herring oil tank in the far West Fjords; a windblown, one-mic recording of “Vaka”, shot at a dam protest camp subsequently drowned by rising water; and first time acoustic versions of such rare live beauties as “Staralfur”, “Agaetis Byrjun”, and “Von”.

By the numbers, the state-of-the-art stage production for the “Blown Away Tour” included 575,424 individual LED lights in 3,000 square feet of video walls and an incredible 23,063 feet of cable to generate the 172 different colors used in the show’s lighting. As part of each show, Carrie and her band flew 150 feet above the audience on a secondary stage that weighed 5,890 pounds, while CO2 and Nitrogen tanks were used during the life of the tour to create the “Blown Away” tornado effect at each performance. Since releasing her debut album in 2005, Carrie Underwood has sold over 15 million albums and charted 17 #1 singles, eight of which she co-wrote.

Sing For The Day! showcases Styx guitarist/vocalist Tommy Shaw's rousing 2016 solo turn with the Cleveland-based Contemporary Youth Orchestra, under the direction of principal conductor/founder Liza Grossman. Alongside guitarist/musical director Will Evankovich and backed by the next generation of the finest high-school-aged musicians in Ohio, Shaw also celebrates the tenth anniversary of Styx's triumphant 2006 One With Everything performance with the CYO. Here, the CYO & Chorus bring new life to many classic band and solo tracks in front of an enthusiastic audience at the intimate Waetjen Auditorium in Cleveland, including "Blue Collar Man," "Girls With Guns," "High Enough," "Too Much Time on My Hands," "Crystal Ball" (featuring the debut of its never-recorded lost verse), and most especially "Renegade," highlighted by an epic guitar/violin duel between Shaw and a noted CYO alum. "It was so much bigger and more everlasting than any of us imagined it would be," marvels Shaw – now see and hear just how magical Sing was for yourself.
