Tyga Slapped With $157K Judgement Over Delinquent 2014 Land Rover Payments

2018 BET Awards

Source: FayesVision/WENN.com / WENN

Tyga might be winning on the charts a bit with his new single “Taste” featuring Offset, but he’s still aligned with the struggle as it relates to his finances. The 28-year-old rapper, already facing a lawsuit from club promoters in Dubai, was hit with a $ 157,000 judgment regarding delinquent payments on his leased 2014 Land Rover.

The Blast reports:

According to court documents obtained by The Blast, Tyga leased a 2014 Land Rover ATB from a company called Midway HFCA. The lawsuit claims Tyga took the car in for repairs with another company, Final Touch Collision, and just never picked it up.

Midway eventually sued Tyga for fraud over defaulting on his lease. The deal was for Tyga to pay $ 3,998 for 36 months and then he had the option to buy the car. He allegedly made several payments but then stopped and at the time was $ 22,739 behind in payments.

They demanded in excess of $ 202,739 in damages from Tyga for not returning the car.

The case has dragged on for months and Tyga never bothered to show up to court.

Late last month, the judge granted a default judgment to Midway against Tyga in the amount of $ 141k in damages, and with interest and legal fees, the grand total hit $ 157,152.60.

Tyga is going to need a few more hit records before this is all said and done.

Music streamer Spotify revenues topped 1 billion euros in 2014

Headsets hang in front of a screen displaying a Spotify logo on it, in ZenicaOnline music streaming service Spotify's revenues leapt 45 percent to top 1 billion euros ($ 1.1 billion) last year, though its operating loss widened due to product development and expansion costs, its holding company said. The company, founded in 2006 by Daniel Ek and Martin Lorentzon, was reportedly valued at about $ 8 billion in a recent fundraising. It said the increased loss was due to substantial investments in product development and international expansion, as well as an increase in staffing.

The Best Film Of 2014 (And You Haven’t Seen It Yet)

What was the best film of 2014? The Oscars said Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue Of Ignorance). The New York Film Critics said it was Boyhood. The LA Film Critics Association agreed, naming The Grand Budapest Hotel as the runner-up. But if the IRAs have anything to say about it, the movie that might well rise in stature and come to be remembered as one of the defining films of the year is…Nightcrawler. That was the big winner at the 40th annual IRA Awards handed out over the weekend. It swept most major awards, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor. Despite a lot of acclaim (and a juicy supporting performance from Renee Russo that should have snagged her an Oscar nomination), it was passed over at the Oscars and by most critics groups. It grossed less than $ 40 million worldwide (most of that in the US), so chances are you haven’t seen it yet. You should.

But wait! Who are the IRAs? The IRAs is a mysterious but august film society that has voted on the best films of the year since 1976. More international and indie focused than the Oscars, more mercurial than the LA Film Critics and more loyal to their favorites than the Golden Globes, the IRAs met over the weekend, voting for the best film of 2014 (along with all the usual other categories) and capping off a two-year debate by finalizing their picks for the best films of the 1960s. They have no more claim to pronounce the best films of the year than anyone else but they’ve been doing it for decades so, hey, it’s tradition!

Below are their votes — including nominees and winners in major categories — followed by its list of the Top 100 Films of the 1960s. If you want to see films that will endure, you could do worse than watch all five of the Best Picture nominees. And are you a serious film buff? Well, tell me, how many of the movies on the 1960s list have you seen?

And the IRA goes to….

Effie Gray Official Trailer #1 (2014) – Dakota Fanning, Emma Thompson Movie HD

In her original screenplay EFFIE GRAY, Emma Thompson takes a bold look at the real life story of the Effie Gray-John Ruskin marriage, while courageously exposing what was truly hiding behind the veil of their public life. Set in a time when neither divorce nor gay marriage were an option, EFFIE GRAY is the story of a young woman coming of age and finding her own voice in a world where women were expected to be seen but not heard. EFFIE GRAY explores the roots of sexual intolerance, which continue to have a stronghold today, while shedding light on the marital politics of the Victorian era.

How the Top 10 Songs of 2014 Prepared Us for the New Year

Happy New Year! Now that the champagne is done, the party is over, and the new year begins, it’s time to reflect on the new year that lies ahead. 365 days — what are you going to do with them? Here are 10 things to keep in mind while setting your goals, ambitions, and dreams for the year, provided by the Billboard Top 10 Hot 100 Songs of 2014.

#1. Pharrell Williams, Happy

We all define happiness in different ways. But if there is thing we can all agree on is that happiness is important, and that’s what Pharrell reminded us of with the lead single off his 2013 album, GIRL. “Happy” is the toe tapping, sing along tune that got us all saying “because I’m happy.” No matter where you are or where you’re going, optimism is something that will lead to some sort of sanity. You can’t explain why things happen and can’t really predict when they will happen. All you can do is learn from the bad, and grow from the good. There’s always a silver lining somewhere.

#2. Katy Perry ft. Juicy J, Dark Horse

They might have confused many when they “pulled a Britney” at the 2014 MTV VMA’S dawning matching jean costumes similar to those worn by Britney and Justin Timberlake at the 2001 American Music Awards. But that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take this song seriously. “Dark Horse” is an anthem for all those are who are single and ready to settle down in a serious relationship. Katy lets you know it’s ok to ask for “something more” in a futuristic electric sort of love trance that carries the song’s spell like beat where a lover is warned that if there ready to love this person, they need to love this person completely. “It’s in the palm of your hand now baby. It’s a yes or no, no maybe,” she sings. “Dark Horse” serves as your reminder to remember your worth in this upcoming new year. Finds those who will appreciate you for everything you are and appreciate yourself for who you are also.

#3. John Legend, All Of Me
“All Of Me” is the more mature, composed version of One Direction’s first hit, “What Makes You Beautiful.” inspired by John Legend’s wife Christy Teigen, “All Of Me’ is a man’s proclamation of his love despite everything that they are and everything they are not. “Love your curves and all your edges. All your perfect imperfections,” he sings. And just how One Direction sang in their 2011 love anthem, “You don’t know you’re beautiful, that’s what makes you beautiful,” “All Of Me” reminds us of the same thing. We all have are “curves and edges.” And that’s the beauty of it. No one in this world is the same. It’s the good and bad in us that makes us who we are.

#4. Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX, Fancy
It’s ok to be confident. If you think otherwise, listen to Iggy Azalea’s “Fancy” featuring Charli XCX. Even those who don’t listen to rap music can find some good in this song, where Charli XCX provides the lesson behind it all. Know who you are and don’t be afraid to show it world. “I’m so fancy can’t you taste this gold. Remember my name, ’bout to blow,” she sings. This is the pick me up anthem you will need in the new year where the message is just for you. It’s ok to give yourself a pat in the back sometimes. Don’t forget to sing along to this song while you’re doing so.

#5. One Republic, Counting Stars
Life sometimes gets overpowered by money. We forget what we’re living for and begin to cherish dollars more than people, dreams, or even our own happiness. And that’s not ok. In One Republic’s “Counting Stars” we are thought that exact same thing. “I feel something so right by doing the wrong thing and I feel something so wrong by doing the right thing. I couldn’t lie, couldn’t lie, couldn’t lie, everything that kills me makes me feel so alive.” This song taught us something that can be summarized by Robert Frost’s 1920 poem “The Road Not Taken.” “Two roads diverged in a wood, and I took the one less traveled by and that has made all the difference.”

#6. Jason Derulo ft. 2 Chainz, Talk Dirty
“Talk Dirty” is your club anthem with a sweet message underneath. Don’t overlook the song just because of it’s title or repetitive lyric, “talk dirty to me.” This Jason Derulo pop hit reminds us that there is a connection that people can make beyond just words. It reminds us that there is a certain bond we develop with our body, our expressions, and ultimately our soul. It reminds us that this new year we need to strive to make connections beyond just facebook friendships or co-workers.

#7. MAGIC!, Rude
Sometimes you will have to go against others wishes. Whether it’s about a move to a new city, starting a new job, or marrying someone against their parents wishes, “Rude” is your reminder that it’s ok. Sure, the song is pure fiction. But the message behind it is true. “Why you gotta be so rude? Don’t you know I’m human too,” Nasri sings. Keep that in mind this new year no matter what side you’re on.

#8. Meghan Trainor, All About That Bass
“All About That Bass” remind us that “every inch of us is perfect from the bottom to the top.” Whether you’re a size 4 or size 10, it’s important to remember that your body is only one of the many things that makes you who you are. Fitness is important. But letting your personal fitness dictate your lifestyle isn’t as important. Strive to be fit. Strive to be at a healthy weight. But don’t strive to be at a point where your personal fitness effects your health and your future.

#9. Ariana Grande ft. Iggy Azalea, Problem

“Problem” reminds us that it’s ok to have doubts about something. The Ariana and Iggy track talks about all the wrongs in a relationship. But its just like Ariana sings, “…even though I hate ya, I wanna love ya.” Doubts are ok. And singing about them is even better. In this new year go ahead and express your concerns whether that be in your job, school, relationships, etc. Don’t be left with regrets in the future.

#10. Sam Smith, Stay With Me
This is the most vulnerable song in this list. But the message is simple. Sometimes something isn’t love. But having someone by you is more than enough. It’s an age old message. Kindness goes a long way. You don’t have to be a lover, or anything more than friend to someone. Just be in the moment. “Oh, won’t you stay with me?” he sings. “‘Cause you’re all I need.”

There are only a few more hours left in 2014, and Kendall Jenner is going out with a bang. The 19-year-old model and reality star is currently visiting Dubai with a star-studded group, including famous pals Selena Gomez, Gigi Hadid and Shay Mitchell. In between sightseeing, Jenner found time to snap a selfie after slipping into a teeny brown bikini:

A-Sides: My Top 64 Pop Culture Moments of 2014

2014 is always going to be a magical year for me. It was the year my second child was born. In terms of pop culture, it was a mixed bag. On a positive tip (I want to try using that phrase to see if I can bring it back), Michael Keaton made a comeback, U2 released one of their best albums in decades (don’t hate), and Chris Pratt became a movie star. On a downside, we lost way too many talented people this year from Robin Williams to Joan Rivers to Philip Seymour Hoffman. In a word, it sucks. It will always suck. Williams’ death in particular will always hurt because of all the good he brought to us all. Anyway, as we close another year, here are my personal favorite moments in pop – music, TV, and film. Arts aside, let’s all appreciate what we have more in the new year, love each other more, and hurt each other less. Live love. Love life. Now for something totally less important than the words I just uttered…

Shameless plug for a personal favorite pop moment.

Listen up! My favorite Americana discoveries of 2014

One of the reasons I attend Americana music festivals is for the opportunity to be exposed to new music and musicians I might never have sampled on my own. Following is a list of some my favorite Americana musical discoveries of 2014 in no particular order and where I first heard them. I hope that you will share your own discoveries.

Sunliner — Rooster Walk 6 and Reynolda House Backyard Barbecue and Brews

Sunliner is a song-driven roots rock band that fuses the artistry of The Infamous Stringduster’s lead singer and bass player Travis Book and his singer/songwriter wife Sarah Siskind, whose songs have been featured on ABC’s hit show “Nashville” and “Pretty Little Liars,” among others. At SXSW 2013, Time Magazine called her “one of the 5 best voices.” According to their website, Sunliner’s sound is unique, encompassing rock, folk, country, jazz fusion and blues, but the music remains firmly rooted in the Virginia soil where they now make their home. Both amazing artists in their own right, I hope to hear more from this husband and wife team in 2015.

Balsam Range — MerleFest

Balsam Range is made up of five outstanding acoustic musicians and singers from Western North Carolina. According to their website, for their band name they thoughtfully and respectfully adopted the name of a majestic range of mountains that surround part of their home county of Haywood, where the Smokies meet the Blue Ridge, the Balsam Range. The band received numerous top honors in the 2014 IBMA Awards, including Entertainer of the Year. Balsam Range was also honored as Vocal Group of the Year. Buddy Melton was named Male Vocalist of the Year, and Tim Surrett received a Mentor Award. The band’s fifth album, Five, made its Billboard Chart debut at No. 4 and remained on the Billboard chart for an impressive six weeks. I heard them playing one afternoon at MerleFest and they had me at their single, “Trains I’ve Missed.” I believe they will have your attention if you give them a listen.
2015-01-01-8689128996_64d4c848cd_b.jpg

Sturgill Simpson — Prairie Home Companion (My backyard)

So this one you may say doesn’t count because I didn’t hear him perform in person, but I did hear Sturgill Simpson perform on Prairie Home Companion “live” on my radio in my backyard and he is too good a find to leave off my list (and hey, it’s MY list, after all, so who’s to say who does and doesn’t count?). If you haven’t heard him, it’s only a matter of time. He and his new album, “Metamodern Sounds In Country Music,” made a number of best of 2014 lists, including NPR’s 10 Breakout Artists of 2014. He’s been compared to Waylon and an early Hank Williams Jr., But don’t take our word for it, judge for yourself here.

The Deadly Gentlemen — MerleFest

The Deadly Gentlemen were the last act I caught at MerleFest 2014 before listening to Merle Haggard, who closed out this year’s festival with an impressive performance. The only reason I happened to hear The Deadly Gentlemen was because they hit the Hillside Stage after Jerry Douglas, whom I will stand in the pouring rain to hear make sweet music with his dobro. Based out of NYC (yes I know, it seems unlikely that a band from THE city would be playing in the hills of Wilkesboro, N.C.), they had me wishing for more. I think you will, too, after you give them a listen here.

After Jack – Rooster Walk 6

After Jack caught my attention at Rooster Walk with their amazing harmonies and foot-stomping, old-timey string band tunes. The Franklin County, Va., trio merged in 2011 after meeting while working as performers in a professional theater company, according to their website. Their first album, “Echo,” was produced by Aaron Ramsey of Mountain Heart. After Jack couples a modern sensibility with distinctly old-time energy to blend bluegrass, gospel and folk elements. The band won the Local Roots Band Competition at the Red Wing Roots Music Festival in July 2014. After Jack, which is scheduled to perform at Rooster Walk 7 over Memorial Day weekend, was named the 2014 Americana Vocal Band of the Year by the Appalachian Cultural Music Association and competed in the 2014 Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Competition.

Hackensaw Boys — FloydFest

The Hackensaw Boys caught my attention at FloydFest 2014 when someone mentioned they were tied to Old Crow Medicine Sbow, one of my all-time favorite groups. Turns out, according to Wikipedia, Phillip “Jigsaw” St. Ours played washboard in both Hackensaw and Old Crow early on (1999-2001), and then for Hackensaw in (2008). Like OCMS, The Hackensaw Boys are a lot of fun to watch, and I dare you not to dance when you hear them play.

Sanctum Sully – MerleFest and Rooster Walk 6

I am slipping Sanctum Sully on this list because they had a new album in 2014, “Southern Trees.” To be honest, however, I actually discovered them last year for the first time at Rooster Walk 5. This rockin’ bluegrass band is so good, and were so amazing at their MerleFest 2014 debut, I had to add them to this list so that I could share their music with an even wider audience. The hit TV show “Moonshiners” should use Sanctum Sully’s “Lost Cove” as its theme song. Based out of Asheville, N.C., the band describes their music as coming from beer-stained bar stools where blues, rock and bluegrass swap stories and trade tall-tale tunes. The polished five-piece acoustic group has been voted one of Western North Carolina’s top three bluegrass bands for four years running. As their website states, three-part harmonies, mandolin, guitar, banjo and bass, Sanctum Sully can certainly pull off a traditional bluegrass tune in style. They are also a lot of fun. Mountain Xpress describes Sanctum Sully as, “Like Steep Canyon Rangers or Chatham County Line, the band’s melodic pathways are paved mostly with pop, harnessing tangled acoustic instrumentation to make hooks as unavoidably catchy as mountain bramble.” Give them a listen. You won’t be disappointed.

Mandolin Orange — MerleFest

I caught a few strains of Mandolin Orange performing on the Americana stage and knew immediately I wanted to hear more. What I didn’t realize at the time was the duo hails from Kernersville, N.C., just down the road from me. Over the past few years, according to their website, Mandolin Orange has shared bills with Rosanne Cash, Chatham County Line, the Steep Canyon Rangers and Abigail Washburn, and traveled as far as the UK to perform at festivals, including Ulster’s 21st Annual Bluegrass Festival, Shakori Hills Grassroots and Hopscotch Music Festival.

TAUK — FloydFest

TAUK is a bit of a divergence from the rest of my list, but after interviewing these guys from Oyster Bay, N.Y., at FloydFest and discovering how genuine they are and hearing everyone else’s reaction to their music, I felt compelled to include them. The quartet keeps popping up on my Sirius radio as a reminder of what I heard from them last summer and their newest album, “Collisions.” Their website describes their music as heavy instrumental rock fusion created by Matt Jalbert (guitar), Charlie Dolan (bass), Alric “A.C.” Carter (keyboard-organ) and Isaac Teel (drums). The Washington Post says: “TAUK’s instrumental music melds genres and styles, creating a hard-charging, often melodic fusion that – thanks to a penchant for improv – offers limitless possibilities” and The Deli Magazine singles out the band’s compelling melodic sense through explaining: “the quartet has a rare ability to channel emotional melodic leads, and all without a lead singer.”

28 Of Our Favorite Feminist Songs Of 2014

It’s been an empowering year for women in music. Beyoncé stood proudly in front of a FEMINIST backdrop at the VMAs, Jenny Lewis explained the complexities of being “just another lady without a baby” and Lily Allen declared, “There’s a glass ceilin’ to break, uh-huh, there’s money to make, and now it’s time to speed it up ’cause I can’t move at this pace.”

Besides the chart-topping female artists who transformed their views on gender equality into catchy hits in 2014, there were also fantastic parodies of popular music that drove girl power messaging to viral heights, like the career-focused feminist take on “All About That Bass” and “Baby, It’s Consent Outside.”

In celebration of a year of great music, here’s a playlist of 27 songs that made us feel all warm and liberated this year:

*We would have included Taylor Swift’s “Blank Space,” because of how effectively she mocks the “boy crazy” image that’s been thrust upon her by the media. But alas, her music isn’t on Spotify. Enjoy the music video instead!

Here’s to another year of feminist jams!

The 2014 Best and Worst Sex List

Lack of sex education is “really a form of child abuse,” according to Louisiana State Rep. Patricia Smith in our favorite statement of the year. Sadly, even schools that do offer sex ed usually only focus on a hasty exploration of biological developments, ignoring the complexity of psychological and relational components.

So children — and adults — largely grow their sexual identities via the propagation of free, online, hardcore porn or the casual sexualization of ever-accessible media. This creates problems. Sex-negative themes emerge: sexual narcissism, misogyny, performance anxiety, that painful split between desire and reality that shows up as various forms of sexual dysfunction.

But among the sex experts — those who actually make it their life work to study the fine points of sexuality — there is little debate. A lack of robust and healthy sex education is a set-up for the worst sexual issues we can imagine in society, and not just for children; we encounter adults suffering from seriously flawed sexual knowledge all the time.

We need to celebrate the fact that sex comes in every style, and experts agree that there’s a wide range of sexual feelings and acts worthy of exploration, as long as they’re consensual and don’t harm anyone. Please read more about the healthy spectrum of sexuality in our just-published book Mirror of Intimacy: Daily Reflections on Emotional and Erotic Intelligence.

With all this in mind, here, for the 2014 year, is our annual Best and Worst Sex List compiled by me with help from my colleagues at Center for Healthy Sex.

11 Things That Helped People Everywhere Love Their Bodies In 2014

For women, 2014 was a year of great steps forward — and unfortunate setbacks. One area where there was much, much more celebration than disappointment was the movement to accept all bodies as beautiful.

Here are 11 projects, campaigns and movements from 2014 that are helping people to love their bodies and to fight back against harmful beauty standards:

1. The “Love Your Lines” Instagram Account

Stretchmarks are one of the many things women are taught to be ashamed of — even though an estimated 80 percent of people have them. Two east coast mothers decided to start an Instagram account celebrating stretch marks and scars as beautiful, rather than “flaws.” They asked women to send in photo submissions and a description of how they felt about their “lines” — and the responses were truly amazing.

2. The Harvard Rugby Team’s “Rugged Grace” Series

The young women on the team produced an incredible series of photographs in which they each shared what they admired about another woman’s body and character in messages written on each other’s skin.

“The project was inspired by the amazing body positivity and acceptance that we saw on our team,” team member Helen Clark told The Huffington Post. “It’s so refreshing to see a group of women being proud of the strength they’ve achieved through hours of training, and to see them celebrating the physical manifestations of that strength.”

3. “Stop The Beauty Madness”

Robin Rice’s awareness-raising campaign features 25 jarring ads that show the types of images you might see in magazines alongside brutally honest commentary. The text in the ads reference[s] the “madness” of the standards we hold women to, with the hopes of making viewers re-think their reactions to images of female beauty.

“We look at beauty magazines and fashion photographs and whether we theoretically believe in them or not, we’ve seen so many of them and they’ve been put into exactly the right light and ratio that something inside of us has said ‘That’s beautiful,'” Rice told The Huffington Post. “Whether or not we believe in it intellectually, something deeper has set in and we compare ourselves to that.”

4. When “Real Men” Posed In Underwear Ads

Men suffer from poor body image, too. The Sun’s photo series showing “real men” posing in underwear ads showed the pressures men face when comparing themselves to models or professional athletes — though by all accounts, the “normal” guys in this series have nothing to be ashamed of.

5. “If People Were Honest About Women’s Bodies”

This BuzzFeed video shows how crazy it sounds when people verbalize cultural expectations about women’s bodies. Imagine if a friend looked in the mirror and said, “I’ve been conditioned to be critical of myself and use self-deprecation as a cover up, so people don’t think I’m conceited, but the truth is, I look amazing.” SO much better than fat talk.

6. When 10 Total Strangers Got Naked Together In Search Of Body Acceptance

In “SHINE,” a video produced by The Goddess Project, 10 women came together to discuss their body insecurities and how they are learning to love themselves.

“We have to stick together and empower each other to overcome all of the stereotypes placed against us,” one participant in the video says. “No matter what we’ve been conditioned to believe, it’s time to step up and recognize how beautiful we really are.”

7. Blogger Gabi Fresh’s Version Of The ***Flawless Music Video

Plus-size style blogger Gabi Fresh teamed up with fellow bloggers Nadia Aboulhosn and Tess Munster to film a cover of Bey’s anthem — this time celebrating larger bodies.

“For me, this video is to show all of my followers that you define your definition of beauty,” Aboulhosn wrote on her blog. “Don’t let anyone tell you to be or look a certain way. We are all flawless and [keep] reminding yourself of that.”

8. The “Fattitude” Documentary

Fat activist Lindsey Averill is teaming up with filmmaker Viridiana Lieberman to make a feature-length documentary about fat discrimination, fighting prejudice against overweight people and helping viewers see that size is not an indicator of worth — big sizes are beautiful, too. The trailer launched in April, and the full film is slated for release in 2015.

9. The “Natural Beauty” Photo Series

Photographer Ben Hopper’s stunning portraits of women showing their underarm hair challenges the idea that women should be hairless to be beautiful.

“The whole point [of the series] is contrast between fashionable female beauty and the raw unconventional look of female armpit hair,” Hopper told The Huffington Post. “I expect [the photos] will surprise a lot of people and I guess, in a way, that is one of my intentions.”

10. Zoë Ley’s Body-Positive Fitspiration

“Fitspo” may be the new “thinspo,” and it’s not always harmless motivation. Blogger Zoë Ley of “Weirdly Shaped” created her own hilarious “fitspiration” images deconstructing some of the messages and reminding women that it’s OK if you don’t have rock-solid abs or work out five days a week.

11. CURVES Art Photography Book

Photographer Victoria Janashvili’s images prove that plus-size bodies are fine art, too.

From Face-Morphing to Speed-Reading, the 10 Best Apps of 2014

homepage-holding

Expand

Our ten favorite new apps of 2014 fall into two categories: apps that make our lives more convenient and apps that make our content more creative. We’ll kick off with creativity and conclude with convenience, in each case suggesting some features that could make these apps even better next year.

Phhhoto

In a Nutshell: instantly adds movement to any scene and turns it into a captivating loop, which you can share on its own mobile social network, as a GIF in texts or emails, or as a video on social networks like Facebook and Instagram.

Why It Made the List: It’s fun, fresh, the loops look really cool, and it’s a favorite of music and fashion royalty.

Wishes for the New Year: an Android version, more cool filters, a strobe light mode that pulses the flash while you shoot for even more zing, and the ability to add tunes and beats to Phhhotos (you can practically already hear them popping off of Katy Perry’s and Diplo’s).

Super

In a Nutshell: prompts users to quickly make and share square cards that are a cross between memes, quotes, and pictures. The cards are shared on Super’s mobile social network and are also easily shareable on other social networks (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, etc.).

Why It Made the List: Super rethinks expressive sharing by framing all content with an emotionally playful punch—all Super cards start with provocative prompts like, “I love,” “crazy,” and “stop” and let you complete the thought. It’s a super-creative approach from Twitter’s super witty cofounder, Biz Stone.

Wishes for the New Year: more attention-grabbing prompts like “Hey” (made famous by President Obama in the most popular campaign email of all time); the old standard re-popularized by Justin Timberlake, “Ladies and Gentlemen”; and perhaps an “Oh No You Didn’t!”

Kanvas Keyboard

In a Nutshell: Kanvas lets you create custom text message drawings, and save and easily access GIFs, memes, and stickers all from your keyboard.

Why It Made The List: Because our texts can always use a little more oomph.

Wishes for the New Year: Android version, more category options for searchable GIFs, and more custom pen options.

Hyperlapse

In a Nutshell: Brought to you by Instagram, Hyperlapse lets you easily create amazing time-lapse videos that look great due to proprietary image stabilization technology.

Why It Made The List: It’s a great way to pack an extraordinary amount of visual information into a short video. See this Hyperlapse of Vogue’s old office.

Wishes for the New Year: the ability to slow down key portions of the video to focus a viewer’s attention on one or two key moments.

TwoDots

What It Does: It’s basically Candy Crush with less clutter. You match dots of the same color and make them explode until you reach the color quota required to advance to the next level.

Why It Made The List: We loved Dots, and this is its storified spawn, so we’re naturally inclined to give it the time of day, but hopefully not all the time of day and night. We’ve shoehorned this game into the creativity section because it seems like the sort of activity that should be good for your brain.

Wishes for the New Year: more levels! We’re already at Level 85 and have nowhere to go. Just kidding. What we really want are more ways to in-app purchase ourselves to victory. How about a nuclear dot that incinerates the next five levels in one fell swoop?

Looksery

In a Nutshell: Using the front-facing camera, this app morphs your face into different shapes and 3-D characters (like a flaming skull and a super creepy cat) and lets you choose a filter, change your eye color, and then record a looping animated audio video message that you can share to Facebook, Instagram, or YouTube or text to your friends.

Why It Made The List: It’s truly addictive and instantly fills you with the childlike energy and creativity of playing make-believe.

Wishes for the New Year: an Android version and more social features—this would be a great social network in its own right.

Shyp

In a Nutshell: Take the stress out of shipping. Simply take a photo of the item you want to ship, enter the destination address, choose a shipping speed/cost, and request your pickup. You’ll get an estimate for the shipping cost, and someone (Shyp calls them “Heroes”) will come pick up your unboxed item within 20 minutes, package it, and send it with the best priced carrier.

Why It Made The List: It’s one of those “Why didn’t I think of that” ideas that’s super disruptive and super convenient, especially during holiday season!

Wishes for the New Year: Android version, and more custom gift-wrapping options.

Slack

What It Does: Slack is a chat platform that simplifies collaboration by enabling the simple creation of group and private chat rooms, drag-and-drop document sharing, and integrated searching.

Why It Made the List: If you’ve ever been added to an email chain involving more than three participants who are exchanging more than two attachments and wanted to rip your hair out trying to figure out who said what, who sent what, and how to see and search it all, Slack solves that.

Wishes for the New Year: native note-taking functionality. Sometimes you have thoughts that aren’t ready to share with anyone. As a workaround, you can create a private channel for yourself called, “Ideas-Not-Safe-for-Sharing,” which sounds a lot more exciting than it should.

Spritz

What It Does: Spritz is a breakthrough speed reading technology that enables you to easily double your reading speed with no special training. As opposed to moving your eyes across a sentence, Spritz quickly flashes words in its specially designed text box, with the word’s optimal recognition point (ORP) highlighted in red for rapid recognition.

Why It Made the List: You know that scene in Jonathan Franzen’s novel Freedom where Patty Berglund holes herself up in the Cabin on Nameless Lake and reads War and Peace? She could have Spritzed it in a single day.

Wishes for the New Year: a Spritz native iOS and Android app. The company has built a webapp called Spritzlet, but on mobile, it has decided to license its technology and API to independent developers of native apps. The results have been mixed and sometimes very expensive. We wish Spritz would build its own native app with universal integrations.

Spring

In a Nutshell: On Spring, you follow the brands and shops that you love, and when something catches your eye, you swipe to buy—and now you can simply tap your thumb with Apple Pay.

Why It Made The List: Spring simplifies mobile shopping so much that you can finally focus on what you want to buy without worrying about how you’re going to buy it.

Wishes for the New Year: an Android version, more brands, more stores, more designers, and the ability to curate your own shop.

The Odd Side’s Best Albums of 2014

If you’ve been with us since the first post in October, you know that we supply you with artists that takes music to an entirely new level. It’s only been two months since that post, but 2015 will be a year that we will take you deeper. But to end 2014 with a bang, we will give you our best albums of the year. There were a lot of albums that have prospered in its own way during the year, but these projects stood out completely and captured the attention that they all deserved. Each album wins a certain award foLike a lot of the music that’s posted on this column, it shows you where music is going. Here are The Odd Side’s Best Albums of 2015.

Most Recognized Album

FKA Twigs – LP1

This London-based singer has lingered around listener’s ears prior to LP1, but the album is what grabbed the acclaim from several critics and national attention from the music lover’s. FKA Twigs has a sound that nearly no one can imitate. Her dark chorus vocals from LP1‘s single “Video Girl” provides a creepy element to the album, while “Two Weeks” has a slower beat with a more euphoric tone. Each song on this album shine’s in it’s own unique way. Twig’s voice is beautiful, and fits well with the unique vibe of the album. Keep this chick under your radar.

Most Underrated

Gordon Voidwell – Bad Etudes

This was an album that no one saw coming, but it definitely kicked the beginning of 2014 off with a start, and even earned critical acclaim upon its release. Gordon Voidwell definitely had put in work to make Bad Etudes such a unique album with a retro feel. The vibe of the album reincarnates the sound of 80’s R&B and pop, even sampling Barbara Moon Mason’s “Another man” for the track “Pure (Hollywood Colt). Bad Etudes is one of the reasons why Gordon Voidwell was one of the artists to look out for performing at this year’s Afropunk Fest as well. If you are looking for a new imagining of a near past, Gordon Voidwell’s new album is the definite album to check out.

Oddest Album from The South

Father – Young Hot Ebony

Although fellow ATL rapper Rome Fortune won over critics with Small VVorld, Young Hot Ebony was the album that proved how much ATL Rap can be. Father’s project is brief, but it has a unique style of music created by weird bass-driven instrumentals and nonchalant raps by Father. Young Hot Ebony is comprised of sex, girls, drugs, the normal stuff most rappers talk about, However,  the way it’s presented is what makes it special. The album features the single “Look At Wrist” featuring iLoveMakonnen and Key!, a track that’s been lingering on the internet and has been also acknowledged as one of the hottest songs of 2014.

Best Production Project

SBTRKT – Wonder Where We Land

SBTRKT’s sophomore LP was a standout project that has definitely earned its critical acclaim in 2014. With the album being released the same day as Flying Lotus’ concept album You’re Dead, winning this award was no small feat.  The UK producer’s instrumentals are similar to his self-titled debut project, but things are a bit darker this time around. They may have been upbeat songs like singles “Temporary View” and “NEW DORP,NEW YORK”, but “Higher” shows a more serious perspective that listeners didn’t see coming. SBTRKT brought in the several unique names to his roster for Wonder Where We Land including Raury, ASAP Ferg, Ezra Koening, and Sampha. With a diverse tracklist, awesome features, and an already unique sound that will keep you interested throughout, Wonder Where We Land will continue to be a favorite even through 2015.

Best LP To Come Out Of Nowhere

Before Raury performed at ATLast, linked up with acts like SBTRKT and The Neighbourhood, and even hung out with Kanye West, the Atlanta artist released a project that would soon put him on the forefront for modern music as a whole. Indigo Child is a project that combines hip hop, rock, R&B, and even a little folk together to create a mixtape that is as unique as it is astonishing. It’s hard to really determine what influenced Indigo Child musically. While a song like “Woodcrest Manor” can be very reminiscent of Outkast, there would be more rock oriented songs like “Chariots of Fire” to completely throw you off. The final product is a free LP that shows several talents of this young Atlanta-native, and with him recently working with Gucci Mane for a track, Raury’s several talents make him both unpredictable and brilliant all at the same damn time.

What do you think about these 5 albums? Do you like them or nah? Is there any album that you think should have made the list? You can leave a comment below. And I”ll see you in 2015.

Filed under: Features Tagged: ASAP Ferg, Bad Etudes, Father, FKA twigs, Gordon Voidwell, ILOVEMAKONNEN, Indigo Child, Key!, LP1, Raury, Rome Fortune, Sampha, SBTRKT, The album, The Odd Side, Wonder Where We Land, Young hot ebony

The 10 Best Art Exhibitions of 2014

The Fall of Icarus (La Chute d’Icare), Henri Matisse, 1943; Photo: Succession H Matisse/Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York/Courtesy of the MoMA, New York

This year, there were too many great exhibitions for one list, so I’m limiting myself to museum shows—with one very notable exception.

Top 11 Films of 2014

Rules are sometimes meant to be broken, which is why this year’s list is the Top 11, not 10. It also has something to do with a very strong year in documentaries, foreign, American studio and indie film. For those titles that are unfamiliar, investigate and surprise yourself.

Birdman
Alejandro González Iñárritu has directed a film filled with great performances, including the best of Michael Keaton’s career, as an action film star beset by problems during a Broadway play he has financed and stars in. The magical realism works, everyone is perfect in his or her role and the ambiguous but elegiac ending fits a stunning film that breaks new ground while conjuring up theatrical disasters that are as funny as they are terrifying.

The Congress
A complete mind-bender that requires great attention. Based on sci-fi master and Solaris author Stanislaw Lem’s The Futurological Congress, this is a mix of live action and animation, set in a future where avatars are replacing human actors. When fading star Robin Wright, as herself, enters a virtual reality animated world, the mayhem really begins. Not just complex for its own sake, The Congress is deeply moving at its end. Ari Folman (Waltzing with Bashir) again shows how special his work is.

LFO
Almost nobody saw LFO, Swedish director-writer Antonio Tublen’s hilarious and unpredictable science fiction black comedy about an inventor who comes up with an electronic tone that hypnotizes people instantly. His base desires, liking sleeping with an attractive neighbor, are replaced by an existential dilemma: Should he try and make the entire world a better place to live or will it go disastrously wrong? Simply shot but flawless in its logic and execution, with a chilling ending to boot.

Venus in Fur
Roman Polanski is back in fine form, with this haunting, psychosexual pas-de-deux between a stage director and an actress who has a strange power over him during auditions. While it takes place within a Parisian theatre, it is playwright David Ives’s clever source material and the perfectly calibrated work of Mathieu Amalric and Polanski’s wife, Emmanuelle Seigner, that keeps us on the edge of the seat, with a master of suspense at the helm.

Nightcrawler
Everyone is seemingly creeped out, in a good way, by Jake Gyllenhaal’s bugged-eyed, skinny, polite psychopath in Nightcrawler and rightly so. But writer-director Dan Gilroy’s bleak and razor-sharp vision of crime as a TV commodity speaks volumes about our wayward moral universe. Rene Russo has come a long way from romantic comedies to a soulless news producer. Like the accidents and murders it portrays, Nightcrawler disturbs and remains in your head.

Enemy
What a year for Jake Gyllenhaal, who played a character who spies on a double of himself, in this eerie adaptation of Portugese literary fiction icon Jose Saramago. Directed with precise and increasing dread by Denis Villeneuve, Enemy explores how two seemingly identical men can be very different in temperament and how their women react in entirely unpredictable ways when they discover they are in the company of doppelgangers.

Finding Vivian Maier
There were many fine docs in 2014, but this gets top honors, not only because directors John Maloof and Charlie Siskel have discovered the work of street photographer Vivian Maier, who took brilliant shots of everyday people while being a nanny. The film not only presents the best of her more than 100,000 previously unknown photos, but also investigates how a collector of family photos at auctions stumbled upon an unheralded and very private genius with a camera.

The Book of Life
Jorge Gutierrez has made a studio animation film like no other, with his Mexican iconography and music mixed with pop. The hero spans three worlds to pursue his true love and the eye-popping visuals of a cheery Mexican underworld is the highlight of this lovely and surprising gem of a movie, celebrating a Hispanic culture rarely seen in major animated films.

Mood Indigo
Michel Gondry again makes this list, with a surreal depiction of Paris, love and tragedy, aided by fantastic production design and otherwise inanimate objects that come to life in the most charming and natural of ways. Audrey Tatou easily gets into your heart, as the waif in love who suddenly learns a flower seems to be growing in her lungs. Never maudlin, never static, a true cinematic flight of fancy.

Art and Craft
There are plenty of docs about art forgery, but Art and Craft is about a strange, at times seemingly mentally handicapped man who worships his recently deceased mother and can forge artwork in any style. Rather than selling it, he fools major U.S. museum curators, donating the forgeries to them, and an investigator tries to bring to light his peculiar, hard-to-prove behavior.

In Secret
Based on Emile Zola’s novel Therese Raquin, In Secret is lushly shot by Charlie Stratton and he makes the best possible use of leads Jessica Lange, Oscar Isaac and Elizabeth Olsen. Romance, murder, lust, guilt, secrecy and revenge are served up deliciously in a classic book adaptation that simply could not be better.

Worthy Contenders: Big Hero 6, CitizenFour, The Imitation Game, Kill the Messenger, A Most Wanted Man, Particle Fever.
