Colin Jost on His Favorite SNL Jokes and Playing Football With Aaron Rodgers

Over the years, Saturday Night Live has earned a reputation for its cast and staff putting in long hours and grueling weeks to get a show on the air. From marathon sessions writing jokes, to starting from scratch on skits that aren’t working, it’s basically a six-day-a-week job during the season. As head writer and co-anchor of “Weekend Update” on SNL, Colin Jost knows this all too well.

Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson’s 5 Best ‘Saturday Night Live’ Sketches

Jost has been working on the show for over a decade, having started back in 2005 as a writer before rising up to be one of the co-head writers. Over that time, Jost has figured out how to balance all his responsibilities to get things done. For all the craziness that can go on when you’re writing comedy for hours on end, Jost’s tips are pretty simple.

“It’s a little exercise and sleep,” Jost told Men’s Journal. “It’s crazy, because you do the show every week and then you kind of forget what you did last week, because you’re working on the current week, and on it goes. If I can do some kind of exercise three or four days a week, it helps keep me sane. And I know sleep is obvious, but it can really help things to wake up fresh and work more efficiently the next day, rather than stay up all night and work like I did back when I was like 22.”

Jost got to put some of those tips to work this summer while starring with Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers on a new campaign for Izod. Jost gets pretty physical in the video, which he co-wrote and makes fun of some of the more traditional menswear ads and clichés of the past.

I became an expert with nunchucks, and now I have a pair in my office so I can try and intimidate young writers.

In the campaign, Jost and Rodgers teamed up to make some meta jokes about those traditional ads, and show off some of Jost’s other “skills” in the process—like playing ping-pong with nunchucks:

Jost spoke with Men’s Journal about his favorite Saturday Night Live skits he got to work on, his essential travel tips, playing football with Aaron Rodgers, and who he’s rooting for this NFL season.

What are some of your favorite jokes you’ve worked on for Weekend Update?

I really liked writing and working on the “Drunk Uncle” character that Bobby Moynihan would do was one I enjoyed, and he was just so good at it. I also really enjoyed the character Cecily Strong would do, the “Girl You Wish You Didn’t Start a Conversation With At a Party,” and writing for the David Ortiz “Big Papi” character that Kenan Thompson would do. The three of them are all such great performers and I enjoyed writing those characters and coming up with jokes for them. They’re all incredible actors so it’s crazy to have written some of them, and then be on “Weekend Update” alongside them as characters. It’s so fun to be out there with them and see how much the audience loves them. That’s a special thing I’m enjoying more now that I’m not constantly a ball of nerves out there so you can go out there and enjoy those moments and have fun.

What was it like working with Aaron Rodgers and getting to show off some of your football skills in the Izod video?

The whole crew was great for it and they made the experience really enjoyable, it felt like a vacation in that sense. Aaron was really funny in it, and he has a lot more experience at this point with commercials then I do, so it was fun to see him set the tone and be really funny by playing it straight and get the tone right.

NFL Superstar Aaron Rodgers Talks Super Bowl LII, Loving ‘Game of Thrones,’ and Playing As Long As Tom Brady

You got pretty acrobatic in the video. Was that you doing all your own stunts?

Absolutely, I do all my own stunts. Sometimes, the way I do them is so impressive that you have to get someone else to do them, but I attempt all my own stunts and sometimes someone else eventually has to get in there. I may not be successful, but I try. The crazy skills competition was funny and I did actually get to learn to use nunchucks a little bit. I became an expert with nunchucks, and now I have a pair in my office so I can try and intimidate young writers [laughs]. I’m not really a skilled ping-pong player, so I had to learn a little bit of that on the fly too.

Colin Jost and Aaron Rodgers for Izod
Izod

What was it like being able to show your personality in a different setting than SNL?

It was liberating and fun to do it. I don’t get to film a lot of things on the show because I usually have my hands full with “Weekend Update” and writing a lot of other sketches, so it was really a lot of fun to get to do it. Being on the set like that was some of the most fun I’ve had in the moment of shooting something and it was just a really cool experience. It was easy in that sense to be working with someone like Aaron on it.

You do shows around the country and travel a lot during the year. Do you have any travel tips or any essential gear you always try to bring with you?

These days, definitely a phone charger. I still manage to somehow forget it even when I remember it. Something essential I think is a good is having a pair of shoes you can wear for everything when you’re on your trip. If you can wear them most days, that’s pretty big because they can take up a lot in your bag, and if you could only wear one pair of shoes for a week and get away with it—I am always happy doing that. Having multiple shoes on a trip is a lot if you’re just taking one bag. At this point, I’ve really streamlined things and I’ve learned through experience what to bring and what not to bring. I keep it as simple as I can, basically, if I can wear most of my outfit for the week right on the plane I’m pretty happy.

With football season about to start, do you have a team you root for?

I am a big New York Giants fan. I’m excited for the season and to see what Saquon Barkley can do. I’ll admit I’m also a big Aaron Rodgers fan as a football player, so it was pretty cool to appear with him in a project like this. It’s pretty rare you get to do that with an athlete you watch play, so it was really cool to work with him.

Big Screen Dreams With Aaron Kaufman

2015-08-16-1439767040-9057322-aaronk.jpg

Imagine the level of talent, determination, grit, resolve and ambition it must take to succeed in the movie industry. The competition is stifling. You are not backed by a fancy degree. You don’t have the money to buy your way into the business. Nope. The only thing you have is an intense burning desire to make movies and enough of a WHY at home to figure out some way to make money doing it. This is the story of Aaron Kaufman. He is a self-made movie producer/director success story. He came from modest means and worked his way up the ranks in film animation and production. Now he’s building his own directorial empire and the foundation of his new empire is his directorial debut movie which will hit theaters in quarter two of 2016, Urge.

Urge, a thriller starring Pierce Brosnan, Danny Masterson (That 70s Show), Ashley Greene (Twilight), and Alexis Knapp (Pitch Perfect 2), features a group of friends who head out on an island vacation. While there they experiment with a new designer drug called Urge. The drug, if taken more than once, diminishes one’s ability to control destructive urges like sex and violence. How long does it take for society to crumble? Can Urge be stopped once it’s started? The movie is co-written by Kaufman, and having been privy to a sneak peak, I can only promise that you will be riveted to your seat. The storyline, characters and music come together to create a magnificent motion picture masterpiece, the likes of which nobody has pulled off since Silence of the Lambs.

Having spent time with Aaron in his N.Y.C. editing studio, and having listened to his story, all I can say is that 20 years ago his big dream of producing and directing movies, seemed improbable. Yet, he’s made it. His movie producer fingerprints have touched dozens of movies, and now he’s out on his own living his big dream, directing his first major motion picture for the big screen. Here is Aaron Kaufman’s advice for accomplishing big screen dreams.

The Best Stuff: According to Aaron, his number one piece of advice for anyone who wants to make it in the movie industry (or in any industry for that matter) is to be true to yourself. You make magic happen in the movies by doing creative work that inspires you. Too often, people get into the movie industry and they start looking around to see what everyone else is creating and then they copy that blueprint. This strategy never works. “I can’t make a David Fincher movie, ever. I am not David Fincher. But there’s a lot of people out there trying to make David Fincher movies.” Aaron says that the time he has spent working on movies with greats like Robert Rodriguez and Quentin Tarantino has taught him to focus on his own passion for movies without paying attention to what others are doing out in the field. “Focusing on what everyone else is doing is the same as commoditizing the industry. Focusing on what works for others does not create art.” It is for this reason, Aaron’s directorial debut, Urge, is a movie co-written by him. It’s his vision, his focus, his own art.

Learning The Industry: Aaron’s path in the movie industry is different than most. He didn’t go to film school, then intern, then get a job in movies. At 21 years old he was getting married while getting his feet wet in film through his own animation studio, doing work for the likes of MTV and Nickelodeon. As the internet took over society, so did it take over his business, where at the height of his business he was doing more animation work that companies would use online than on film, so he sold his business and started throwing feelers out into the film world. Aaron says that the best thing any budding artist or entrepreneur can do for his career is to become a Jack of All Trades within the industry. By doing so, it makes you a valuable commodity because firms will hire you for one main job because you can do all the jobs. Aaron’s belief is that the best way to learn anything is to jump into it. Mistakes will happen, but that’s where growth takes place. Aaron says that he’s very thankful to have started his family at such a young age, because when there are little mouths at home waiting to be fed, it forces you to get outside your comfort zone to do things you would put off doing under other circumstances. His need to make a living forced him to take any and all jobs he could get within the industry, and it forced him to push himself to reach for bigger and better opportunities along the way. He says that stress can be an awesome motivator.

Mistakes: I asked Aaron if he’s made any mistakes along the way. He says his biggest mistake was in waiting to go after his huge dream of becoming a director. “Being a movie producer for 15 years was great. I loved it. But being a producer is like dating a girl you really like, but always dropping her off at someone else’s house at the end of the night. Directors get to do the fun stuff.” Aaron says that in any business, it’s really easy to let years go by as you coast along on your excuses. He says that you can invent one million reasons why it’s a bad idea to do something right now, but then you wake up 15 years later and realize all of them were just stupid excuses which prevented you from realizing your dream. Aaron says that what he learned from waiting so long is that when you are really passionate about something, when there’s this burning itch you cannot stifle, go after it. Do it now.

Taste Before Skill: Aaron says that one of the most important lessons he has learned was from Ira Glass, host of This American Life on NPR. Says Ira, “Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, and I really wish somebody had told this to me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But it’s like there is this gap. For the first couple years that you’re making stuff, what you’re making isn’t so good. It’s not that great. It’s trying to be good, it has ambition to be good, but it’s not that good. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is good enough that you can tell that what you’re making is kind of a disappointment to you. A lot of people never get past that phase. They quit. Everybody I know who does interesting, creative work they went through years where they had really good taste and they could tell that what they were making wasn’t as good as they wanted it to be. They knew it fell short. Everybody goes through that. And if you are just starting out or if you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. Do a huge volume of work. Put yourself on a deadline so that every week or every month you know you’re going to finish one story. It is only by going through a volume of work that you’re going to catch up and close that gap. And the work you’re making will be as good as your ambitions. I took longer to figure out how to do this than anyone I’ve ever met. It takes awhile. It’s gonna take you a while. It’s normal to take a while. You just have to fight your way through that.” Aaron says that this advice has been absolutely critical in his journey as a movie producer and director. He says that over his lifetime he’s acquired a taste for finely produced and directed movies. It takes a long time to close the gap between what you know is a great movie and your output. For example, when Aaron finished the first draft of his screenplay for Urge, he was on the one hand excited it was done, but on the other hand felt like it was shit. Aaron says you cannot compare your taste to your skills at the start of the project. Over time, your taste and your skills were merge as one, but it takes a lot of time.

Mentors: Aaron says that he’s created a habit of finding mentors in the industry to learn from. In his younger years, Aaron found out that Roger Smith, COO of Warner Brothers, lived nearby. Aaron, anxious to learn about the movie business, reached out to him. Smith didn’t respond. So, Aaron kept calling and writing until one day, Smith agreed to meet him for lunch. They met at Café De Artist for lunch and that was the start of a lifelong friendship that offered one of kind insight into the business that Aaron could never have received in film school. In fact, most of his career has been the result of reaching out and asking questions from greats who have paved the way before him, including Roger Smith, Robert Rodriguez, Quentin Tarantino, Sydney Lumet and Chris Blackwell. Aaron says that it would take many lifetimes to navigate the movie industry alone, hence it’s an industry rife with broken dreams. The only way to make it in the big screen business, and probably any business, is to get in front of those who have already forged the journey before you to find out the roadblocks, shortcuts, and rest areas along the way.

Urge will hit the big screen in the spring of 2016. Having seen the trailer and having spent an evening with Aaron, there’s one thing for certain; Aaron Kaufman has made his big screen dreams come true.

From Zuckerberg to Jobs: The Aaron Sorkin Story

With each generation, new stories of success form, and while many gain fame and fortune for their intellectual and creative contributions to society, rarely do we witness someone change the very nature of our existence, whether that be with unique innovations, or a new way of looking at a longstanding subject. We marvel at these individuals in a way that is hard to describe, considering that what they have accomplished is more impactful than we thought humanly possible. And that is just it, we can never fully understand how the mind of an intellectual and creative genius operates, but it is ever fascinating to examine their brilliance with scrupulous detail. As mainstream society becomes more accepting of what can be called “geek culture,” the desire to know more about their lives has increased, and with that, the trend of chronicling their trajectory has become increasingly common in the form of the biopic.

Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg. Jobs was the most important contributor to the personal computing phenomenon of all time, and arguably the most important American of the last fifty years. Zuckerberg is possibly the closest thing to Jobs for his generation. Both men have been subjects of biopics in recent years and with the upcoming film about Steve Jobs, there are some important things to remember with regards to chronicling his life on screen. First, let’s look at Zuckerberg.

Zuckerberg was only a year old when Steve Jobs became powerless within his own company in 1985. Over the next two decades, the tech world exploded, growing at an unprecedented pace, with large contributions from Jobs and other pioneers of personal computing. Because of these innovations, Zuckerberg became an adult at the perfect time for someone with his skill set. A couple months before his twentieth birthday, Zuckerberg came up with concept that would become Facebook in his dorm room. Within six months, he moved from his dorm in Cambridge to sunny California, and entered the capital of tech world in the United States. By the time he was 23e, he was already a billionaire, and today, Facebook is used by around a quarter of the world’s population. When the 2010 film, The Social Network was released to critical and commercial success, the story that it painted about the origins of Facebook and its CEO was less than flattering.

With a slogan like “you don’t get to 500 million friends without making a few enemies,” it was clear that the film had pinpointed on the controversy that surrounded the early days of Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg himself. The story arc relied heavily on the two lawsuits that Zuckerberg was embroiled in after Facebook became the most important webpage since Google. The co-founder of Facebook, and original CFO, Eduardo Saverin was ousted from Facebook in a rather dubious series of legalities and trickery shortly after Facebook became a huge success. Also, allegations from two Olympic athletes and former Harvard students that Zuckerberg reportedly stole the idea from was simultaneously unfolding during the lawsuit between Zuckerberg and his former best friend. Eventually, both of these cases were settled, with the Winklevoss twins netting a multi-million dollar settlement and stock shares and Saverin returning to Facebook’s masthead and an undisclosed settlement (likely in the hundreds of millions) as well as a confidentiality agreement. The Social Network’s scribe, Aaron Sorkin, focused on these matters intensely when writing the screenplay for the David Fincher film. The film was lauded by the great critic Roger Ebert as the best film of the year, and most of his peers agreed that it was a dark, ironic drama with a comedic blend.

The problem with The Social Network is that many people saw it as fact. Sure, Jesse Eisenberg played Mark Zuckerberg in an acting performance that is still the best of his career, but the way that he was set to portray Zuckerberg, made the real man appear as a stereotype of a character trope. Eisenberg spoke rapidly, intelligently, but abrasively, as he made Zuckerberg appear as an undeniable brilliance with a pension for disregarding the emotions and actions of those around him. Andrew Garfield, pre-Spiderman days, represented Eduardo Saverin in a way that made the man look petty, naive, and somewhat of a lackey to Zuckerberg. Both real life counterparts called the film an exaggeration of actually facts, and a few studies have the movie being only forty percent accurate. In fact, the movie made Zuckerberg look as if his motivations for creating Facebook were to get back at girls who had wronged him and get new girls in return. To his credit, Sorkin did not take on the movie because he thought that it was factually a great story but that it was an excellent storytelling opportunity.

The truth is that Zuckerberg is part of the one dollar CEO club in which he gets a salary of exactly, yes, a dollar per year. It has been stated that he works fifty hour weeks at Facebook’s corporate office to this day, and instead of having a lavish, towering workspace, he works in the trenches alongside his employees. He met his wife at Harvard a year before he started working on Facebook in 2003. Of course, a man with that much intelligence and success is bound to bring controversy, but The Social Network gave a false interpretation of the pioneer of modern social media. Is Zuckerberg a nice guy? I don’t have an answer to that, but neither did Aaron Sorkin. Is Zuckerberg a genius? Absolutely.

To get this out of the way, the 2013 film, Jobs, was pure fan-fiction and an insult to Apple and to Steve Jobs, in large part because the “only gets by with his looks” actor, Ashton Kutcher attempted to abandon his cast type of being dumb yet lovable to embody the most brilliant mind of his generation, and the results were absolutely awful. And Hollywood is commenting on that by taking another stab at a Jobs biopic, admittedly at a higher level this time.

Set to release in October and based off of the 2011 biography of Steve Jobs by Walter Isaacson, the second attempt at Jobs’s career is assuredly going to be better a better film in every way than the first try, but what exactly does that mean? The same man that penned Zuckerberg’s story has been tasked with Jobs’s life, and if the trailer is any indication of what to expect, Aaron Sorkin has once again pinpointed on controversy as the opening moments have Seth Rogen as Steve Wozniak asking Jobs what his purpose is in the company and what exactly does Jobs provide? This plays off of every anti-Apple, self-righteous computer programmer that likes to point out that Steve Jobs did not actually code as if that means he was not the driving force behind Apple because at a tech company, you have to know programming, right? The absurdity of this popular way to unmask Jobs as some form of poser in the industry is an insult to the legacy of Steve Jobs.

The trailer shows Steve Jobs portrayed by Michael Fassbender as hard to get along with, egotistical, but of course an utter genius at the same time, resembling Sorkin’s representation of Zuckerberg in many ways. The other aspect of Steve Jobs’s life that Sorkin has chosen to dive into his skeleton closet in regards to Lisa Brennan-Jobs, the child that Jobs fathered out of wedlock a few years after Apple was born. In his younger years, Jobs adamantly denied that Lisa was his child, and it was only after he was ousted from Apple that he started to repent for his early mistakes.

The Steve Jobs that founded Apple was not the same Jobs that took back the helm in 1997 and reinvigorated Apple’s computer models and the simple, yet beautiful interface that is present on all of the revolutionary devices that Apple released in the early-2000’s such as various iterations of the iPod, the iPhone, and iPad. Also, his personal life had changed dramatically at that point as he had remarried and started a family that would add three more children to his life. Jobs may have not been the best man in his youth, and he may have became too into his own ideas which led to his removal from Apple, but his formidable years, the ones spent away from Apple, with companies like NeXT which would develop the first browser for the Internet, and also contributing to the creation of Pixar which has brought many beloved animated films to screens ever since the first fully computer generated animation movie, Toy Story. He brought Apple from near bankruptcy to one of the most profitable companies in the world.

If we can take Sorkin’s portrayal of Zuckerberg into consideration, it begs the question of how trusting we can be with the upcoming look at the life of Steve Jobs. No one is perfect, and Jobs certainly knocked heads with many in his career, but if his story of redemption is not told accurately, then the film will serve no purpose other than pandering to the idea of a good dramatic film.

Aaron Sorkin has successfully made Jesse Eisenberg appear to be everything that is Mark Zuckerberg so will Michael Fassbender follow the same path when becoming Steve Jobs? That would not be compliment, and it seems that Sorkin has done exactly what he must not do as a storyteller: categorize individuals. He makes Zuckerberg and Jobs appear as anti-social, egotistical geniuses, because hey, that is how all tech geniuses are in real life, right? The truth about these two complex individuals will likely never be represented accurately on screen, but what we can examine is the contributions that they made to society and to their industry. Be weary of a convincing performance from Fassbender, because if Jobs were still alive to comment, I’m sure his remarks would fall in line with what Zuckerberg had to say about Eisenberg’s representation of himself written by the same man: Aaron Sorkin.

Hunted by a great black beast of a dragon, caught between the King's Guard and a rebel force led by a rogue wizard, Daven's only hope of surviving is to become more than he's ever dreamed possible. Taming Fire is the first book in the Dragonprince's Legacy. Approximately 110,000 words.

Aaron Hernandez Merchandise Banned In Courtroom During Murder Trial

With former Patriots tight end Aaron Hernandez currently preparing for his upcoming trial in regards to the murder of semi-pro football player Odin Lloyd; a judge is trying to ensure that any potential Hernandez supporters are silenced in her courtroom.

Judge E. Susan Garsh has drafted a court order which bans any type of jersey or NFL items that relates to Hernandez or the case itself during the duration of the murder trial.

In a report by the Boston Globe Garsh advised, “No person wearing clothing, or a button or other object attached to clothing, or carrying an object that displays any Patriots or other NFL team logo, football-related insignia, or words and/or a photograph that relate in any way to this case will be permitted entry to the Fall River Justice Center during any phase of the trial.”

A lucky young dude arrives, and the babes are hungry for his fresh meat. They’re soon mouthing his hard pecker, and Raquel rides him reverse cowgirl while Carrie sits on his face. After much banging and mouthing, he finally blows his hot load all over the women’s faces.
