Happy Fall Trends You Can Actually Wear

I’ve held out as long as I could, but the transitional weather is here and the leaves are threatening to change. With that, I’m forced to retire my strappy sandals, beachy nail polishes and beloved summer handbags, and officially start moving towards fall fashion, even if we’re in that in-between phase of being overly hot one day and chilly the next.

Having just recently prepped and presented fall fashion tips for several book signing events, I realize for the average Jill just how many trends are out there to digest: making sense of it all can be overwhelming. (As if getting everything organized and on schedule this time of year wasn’t work enough! Like my family’s dinner tonight for example.)

Akin to my theory of really loving each piece of clothing that you own and making every accessory work to empower you and make you stand out, here’s a roundup of “happy” fall trends that should make you smile for ease of style or spunk of character or simple wear-ability.

CAPES
Cozy capes are stealing the spotlight when it comes to outerwear. Look for fun closures, slitted sleeves and streamlined pockets.

2015-10-02-1443805238-5346642-IvoryThreeButtonCape.jpg

Even kids can get in on the action with seasonal plaid prints that will make them look dapper, like a mini Sherlock Holmes!

BOHO
Richly layered ensembles were the focus of many designers’ collections, including Alberta Ferretti and Erdem. You can capture the bohemian vibe with an embroidered swing dress and layer with a sweater or jacket.

2015-10-02-1443805340-8837629-RedBorderSwingMidiDress.jpg

MIDI BOOTS
Taller than an ankle boot yet below the knee, the midi is the talk of the season among editors for offering a fresh, new boot silhouette.

2015-10-02-1443805842-3770088-BlackBuckleBootie.jpg

FRINGED…EVERYTHING
Here’s a trend that some write off for only the youthful, but while fringe detailing may be frisky, it can also be subtly elegant. Look for the visual movement and texture it brings to clothing.

2015-10-02-1443805476-8830828-IvoryFringeOpenCardigan.jpg

2015-10-02-1443805514-7217892-GraySouthwestFringeBoot.jpg

FLOPPY HATS
Unlike the knitted caps we’ll need during winter to keep our heads warm, opt for a floppy hat now for the perfect, stylish topper.

2015-10-02-1443805610-9976809-BlackStudWoolFloppyHat.jpg

SLEEK MINIMALISM
For a straightforward look for work or play, a neutral, streamlined dress gets the job done and speaks of quiet luxury.

2015-10-02-1443805654-4144324-CharcoalFitFlareDress.jpg

FAUX FUR
If an entire luxurious, faux fur coat is not your speed, look for trims on cuffs and collars.

2015-10-02-1443805752-3471403-CreamFauxFurJacket.jpg

SUEDE BOOTS
The rich, soft look of suede is back, and while doing so consider boots in an unexpected color to spice up your footwear. You’ll note more stacked and wider heels this season too.

2015-10-02-1443805898-4953883-BurgundySaraniOvertheKneeBoot.jpg

BLACK & WHITE
While an evergreen trend, black-and-white patterns like this houndstooth are simply getting bolder and more defined–almost to the point of looking mod.

Are Miley Cyrus’s VMA Outfits Actually a Harbinger of Fashion Trends to Come?

Photo: Getty Images

We all knew what to expect from Miley Cyrus’s VMA ensembles: outrageous colors, even more audacious cuts, and, of course, plenty of nudity. All that—and then some—came to pass at last night’s ceremony. As the host, she kicked off the evening in a body harness by Atelier Versace, and later wore other looks by the house, as well as pieces by Prada, The Blonds, and Bcalla. The thing VMA viewers are buzzing over today is the sheer nakedness of it all—one of Cyrus’s breasts actually made it into the broadcast, after all. But perhaps the real conversation—in fashion, at least—should be about the style of the clothing the pop singer-cum-phenom wore.

Not only did Cyrus woo high-fashion brands to craft playful outfits to her specifications, but she also sported two Courrèges pieces, both introduced by André Courrèges in his mid-century heyday. She accessorized a plastic, bubble-covered dress with Courrèges sunglasses and added an orange Courrèges visor to a two-piece outfit made to look like eyes and lips. Celebs mining fashion archives is none too new, but the decision of Cyrus and her stylist, Simone Harouche, to look to Courrèges couldn’t be more timely. The house is about to undergo a revival at the hands of Arnaud Vaillant and Sébastien Meyer, the young duo behind the LVMH Prize–nominated Coperni Femme. Does this mean that she’ll make an appearance at their debut Spring 2016 presentation in Paris? You never know.

The Dating Market Might Actually Be Worse For Educated Straight Women

After journalist Jon Birger entered his 30s, he began to notice a pattern in his social circle: Most of the men he knew were married or in a relationship and most of the women he knew were single and having a hard time dating. These women had “everything going for them,” he told The Huffington Post, yet they either couldn’t get dates or were stuck dealing with men who toyed with them.

Birger became curious about his anecdotal experience and wanted to see if there were statistics to back up what his single female friends were going through — and there were. He believes that the lopsided dating scene in large U.S. cities like New York all comes down to a gender ratio which favors men. In the U.S. as a whole, men and women are split about 50/50, but that ratio shifts when you look at the number of college graduates by gender: Women between 25 and 34 are 21 percent more likely than men to be college graduates, according to 2013 data.

In this environment, educated heterosexual women who wish to date men who also graduated college must navigate a playing field in which guys have significantly more dating prospects, a phenomenon Birger calls the “man deficit.” Birger’s new book Date-onomics centers around this very concept, and offers a not-so-romantic aerial view of the contemporary dating landscape.

“A lot of the women who I talked to about this felt like they must be doing something wrong or it must be their fault,” he said. “I think, for at least some of them, it was reassuring to know that it wasn’t just in their heads.”

In conversation with The Huffington Post, Birger explained exactly how the “man deficit” plays out, who has better odds in the dating pool and what women might want to do once they understand the demographics:

Your theory centers around the concept of a “man deficit.” What exactly does that mean?

Women have been graduating from college at a higher rate than men going back to the early ‘80s, and at a much higher rate than men going back to the ‘90s. These college graduation rates and gender ratios have spilled over into the post-college dating market. Of course, none of this would matter if we were all more open-minded about who we were willing to date and marry — both college-educated men and women have become less willing to date and marry non-college-educated people.

[In this environment], men take advantage. A core part of my argument is that the college and post-college hookup culture is to a large extent a product of these gender ratios. There’s a lot of social science on this, and it all points to the ideas that men delay marriage and play the field when women are in oversupply. When it’s the opposite, the culture is more likely to emphasize courtship and romance.

In your opinion, has online dating affected this dynamic?
I’m probably going to be in the minority in this argument, but my point of view is that it doesn’t really matter. I know everybody thinks Tinder is causing the hookup culture, but the reality is that there’s actually a history of blaming new technologies for young people having more sex.

I know everybody thinks Tinder is causing the hookup culture, but … I think stuff like Tinder are symptoms, not the cause.

Honestly, a lot of the guys I interviewed who you’d probably think are the most schmuck-y, so to speak, were doing it the old-fashioned way. They were going up to pretty women in bars and buying them drinks. They didn’t have their heads in their phones. This is a lofty way of me saying that I think stuff like Tinder are symptoms, not the cause.

You explain how, unlike women of other races, Asian-American women are immune to the man deficit. Why do you think that is?

I was completely confused by that. Initially, I wanted to see what groups were more or less affected by the man deficit. I assumed, since Asians are more likely to be college-educated than non-Asians, I’d write about Asian women and explore how vulnerable they are to the man deficit because so many of them are college-educated. But it turns out that I was 100 percent wrong. If you look at the census data, Asian women marry at a much higher rate than non-Asian women.

I couldn’t figure out why, though. I was talking to one of my Asian friends, and she said, “It’s funny — when I was in high school, nobody wanted to date the Asian girl, but something happened in the ‘90s where suddenly everybody wanted to date the Asian girl.” For her, the cultural touchstone of this was that “Seinfeld” episode [in which Jerry is disappointed that his date isn’t Chinese]. In the book, I try to stay away from the “why” part.

But there are studies out there showing that men in general perceive Asian women as most attractive. Then there was this terrific data from OKCupid that tracked message response rates for people of different races. The takeaway was that Asian-American women have the highest response rates. This even held true among lesbians.

You generally stayed away from giving advice in the book, but you wrote that college-educated women who want to marry college-educated men are better off marrying “Mr. Perfectly Acceptable,” rather than holding out until 40 for Mr. Right. Can you explain what you mean by that?

I want to preface this by saying that I totally get that not everybody prioritizes marriage over career. Even for people who want to get married, it may not be their highest priority in life. Really, all I’m doing is trying to help people make informed decisions. A woman who puts an extremely high priority on getting married should know that every year you’re in the dating market, the numbers get worse for you.

A woman who puts an extremely high priority in getting married should know that every year you’re in the dating market, the numbers get worse for you.

I liken it to musical chairs. In the first round of musical chairs, really only the kid who isn’t paying attention doesn’t get a chair. But by the last round, you have a 50 percent chance of losing. In every successive round of the game, the odds of being left out increase.

This is also what happens in dating. If you start out in a dating pool of 140 women and 100 men, which is probably not unlike what young women in New York are staring at, that starts out as a 1.4 to one ratio. Once half of the women in this dating pool get married — so 70 women marry 70 men — the ratio among the remaining singles becomes greater than two to one. If you’re on the wrong end of the gender ratio — like college-educated women in general — every year you hold out, the dating market is going to be statistically more challenging.”

Numbers aside, do you think people are able to think in these terms? How does one know who is “Mr. Perfectly Acceptable”?
I’m an old married guy — I’m 46 and have been married for 20 plus years. If you talk to people who have been married for a long time, they’ll tell you there’s an element of compromise in all marriages, in all successful marriages. Sometimes the compromise is part of the fun. It would be boring if you were 100 percent perfectly compatible I think, and maybe others would disagree. There’s always a level of compromise in a marriage, no matter what the situation.

You argue that ultimatums can help women in this type of environment. How so?
In every other part of life — in business and politics — everybody understands the power of the ultimatum. But for some reason, people resist it when it comes to romance. The reality is that an ultimatum creates artificial scarcity in an otherwise abundant marketplace. It makes you want more of what you perceive you may lose.

One of these truisms that you hear in business is that you should never make a decision until you absolutely have to. If you’re a single 35-year-old man in Miami, Chicago or New York, every year the dating market becomes a little bit better for you. Why make a decision about one woman now when you can keep her as an option and continue exploring the market? I feel that the ultimatum is a way to push back against the male desire not to make a decision any sooner than he had to.

I feel that the ultimatum is a way to push back against the male desire not to make a decision any sooner than he had to.

You want it to happen naturally and organically, obviously. I get that and I get that what I’m saying is highly non-romantic, but I’m making an argument about what I think works, rather than what makes for the best love story.

How do you recommend that women approach their dating lives in such a lopsided market?
I’m going to preface this with: I’m not a dating coach — I’m a middle-aged guy and I’m not telling people how to live their lives. I’m just a believer in informed choices.

All things being equal, if you’re just starting out your career and you have one job offer in Manhattan and another job offer in Silicon Valley or San Jose, and you’re on the fence between the two jobs and you’re a monogamy- or marriage-minded heterosexual, my suggestion would be to put these gender ratios on your list of things to consider. Cities like Seattle or Silicon Valley or San Francisco or Denver have less lopsided or even male-skewed gender ratios among college grads, so the dating environment is going to be more woman-friendly.

At the same time, I totally get that a 45-year-old woman is not going to pick up her entire life and leave everything behind to go move to Denver. I realize that that’s not a realistic suggestion for some people.

So what would you tell women who aren’t willing to pick up and move?
If they’re online dating in a big city, one thing they could consider is to include the suburbs in their searches. I know it sounds counterintuitive, because it’s easy to think that all of the guys in the suburbs are going to be married. But in fact, generally speaking, the gender ratios among single college grads are less lopsided in the suburbs than they are in big cities.

WSJ Columnist Says She Has Proof Latino Voters Actually Like Donald Trump

Although a Gallup poll released this week shows that Donald Trump is far and away the most disliked Republican presidential candidate among Latino voters, one conservative columnist says she may have found signs to the contrary, courtesy of some anecdotal evidence.

In her column on Thursday, The Wall Street Journal’s Peggy Noonan cited a conversation with a Dominican friend to explain why she thinks Trump’s “staying power in the polls reflects a change in the electorate.”

Something is going on, some tectonic plates are moving in interesting ways. My friend Cesar works the deli counter at my neighborhood grocery store. He is Dominican, an immigrant, early 50s, and listens most mornings to a local Hispanic radio station, La Mega, on 97.9 FM. Their morning show is the popular “El Vacilón de la Mañana,” and after the first GOP debate, Cesar told me, they opened the lines to call-ins, asking listeners (mostly Puerto Rican, Dominican, Mexican) for their impressions. More than half called in to say they were for Mr. Trump. Their praise, Cesar told me a few weeks ago, dumbfounded the hosts. I later spoke to one of them, who identified himself as D.J. New Era. He backed Cesar’s story. “We were very surprised,” at the Trump support, he said. Why? “It’s a Latin-based market!”

There you have it, folks.

18 Real Things Donald Trump Has Actually Said About Women

Donald Trump claims to “cherish” women, but his actions — and words — suggest otherwise.

Fox News’ Megyn Kelly called him out on his sexist behavior during the GOP debate on August 6, reminding him: “You have called women you don’t like ‘fat pigs’, ‘dogs’, ‘slobs’, and ‘disgusting animals.”

Trump laughed off the question, claiming he doesn’t “have the time for total political correctness.” Later, Trump called Kelly a “bimbo” and said that he “didn’t recognize” the remarks she was referencing.

Well, we recognize them.

Trump has consistently insulted, belittled, sexualized and stereotyped women. He has also taken the time to personally insult individual notable women like Sarah Jessica Parker, Rosie O’Donnell, Cher, Bette Midler, and others.

Here are 18 of the most outrageous things Trump has said about women:

7 Tips For Communicating With Your Teen (So You Might Actually Be Heard)

Effective communication isn’t just a free-for-all and it certainly isn’t a no-holds-barred argument where disrespect from your children is tolerated in an effort to show you’re an enlightened and modern parent. It’s important to set rules, guidelines or boundaries for these interactions with your kids. My father’s cornerstone rule was that I could talk until I was blue in the face as long as I didn’t get disrespectful.

Just as my father policed my tone and attitude, you have to police your tone and attitude. You won’t always get the response you want while trying to communicate with your children, but you must discipline yourself to keep trying to get your message through in the right way. Older kids are often self-conscious around adults, so they may appear to be inattentive or disinterested. Don’t be intimidated or angered by eye rolling and heavy sighs. If the child sits there and refuses to engage, that doesn’t mean her ears aren’t working. You’d be surprised how your words will be played back in her mind later.

What To Do When Your Kids Roll Their Eyes At You

Often, teens just don’t want to admit that their parents might be making sense. But they still listen. Sometimes, you have to take what you can get. Just getting a teenager to stay in one place long enough to receive a message can pay dividends down the road. Here are some guidelines that can be particularly helpful when you’re trying to get through to a child. These suggestions, when followed, have proven to be very effective in drawing children of all ages out of their shells and into an exchange:

1. Approach all communications in a way that protects or enhances your child’s self-esteem, even when you’re in discipline mode. For example, it would be wrong to handle unacceptable academic performance by saying something like, “You’re lazy and irresponsible, and I’m so sick of your not doing what you’re supposed to do.” A better approach might be, “You and I both know you’re capable of doing so much better. As your parent, I’d be cheating you if I allowed you not to use your wonderful mind and intelligence. Let’s find a way that you can perform at a level that you can be proud of.”

2. Narrow the focus of your task-oriented communications as much as possible. Decide in advance what your objective is and don’t allow yourself or your child to jump around to a number of different topics. Hopping around will just create confusion and make it difficult for you to reach a resolution. If you find yourself drifting, simply say something like, “That’s a discussion for another time, but right now, I want us to stay sharply focused on what we came here to discuss.”

How To Have A Successful – And Peaceful – Relationship With Your Teen

3. Use your communications to generate solutions rather than to relive problems. No one can change what’s already happened. Problem-solving communication should be focused on moving beyond what’s happened toward what you want to happen in the future. Be very specific about the behavioral changes or outcomes you expect. An admonishment to do better is not very helpful. Questions that can help you stay solution-oriented include “How can we avoid this occurring in the future?”; “What have we learned, so that we can specifically do something different next time?”; “What would have been a better approach or solution to the situation?”

4. Focus on the issue at hand, and avoid personal attacks and character assassination. Stay focused on the behavior and the consequences of the behaviors, rather than on the child and character traits such as honesty and integrity. Those traits may in fact be extremely important, but it’s better to talk about how behaviors reflect on those traits, rather than questioning whether the child exhibits them. Avoid comments like, “You’re a liar and not trustworthy.” Instead, say things like, “That kind of behavior or choice reflects poorly on your honesty and integrity. If you choose differently, then others will be able to see your good qualities. I really want you to make some different choices in the future. Let’s talk about what those choices might be.”

One Quality That Sets Successful Parents Apart

5. Stay in the here and now. Throwing old behaviors and circumstances in your child’s face is nonproductive and will cause him or her to feel helpless. Focus on the current solution only. If you solve problems in the present, the past will seem increasingly remote and irrelevant.

6. Keep your problem-solving communications and exchanges private. Don’t ever take your child to task in the presence of peers, relatives or siblings, unless they’re directly involved in the situation. Dressing the child down in front of others will cause humiliation, embarrassment and resentment. Even though you may feel that’s not what you’re doing, it might be seen very differently by the child. Take it private and keep it private.

7. Conclude on a positive note. It’s important for your child to feel there’s an opportunity for rehabilitation and that he or she has some formula for success going forward.

Closed Captioning At GOP Debate Actually Cat Walking On Keyboard

The closed captioning was the real frontrunner of the first GOP debate. Participants included the candidates who couldn’t make the main debate — the triple A players, if you will.

It was as if the closed caption technician had used the restroom, and a wayward cat had wandered in and decided to take a nap on the keyboard.

Why It Would Actually Make Sense For Shailene Woodley To Be In The ‘O.C.’ Musical

“The O.C.” may have ended back in 2007, but its cultural significance will never die!

We found out at the end of last month that a musical version of the show will run for one night in Los Angeles on Aug. 30. This leads us to the little wish we’d now like to voice: that “Divergent” actress and all around mega-star Shailene Woodley make a cameo appearance.

Why and how would this ever possibly come to be?

To start, Shailene Woodley appeared on the show in her youth. Woodley played Kaitlin, the younger sister of Mischa Barton’s character Marissa, in the early days of the series. Here’s footage of Woodley in the pilot episode:

You may not remember her because when the character was reintroduced in Season 3, Willa Holland took over the role.

“The version of Kaitlin Cooper that we were going to bring back to the show was a little bit older than Shailene would’ve been able to achieve on her own,” show creator Josh Schwartz told The Huffington Post in 2013. “And was kind of a very different character, which Willa was great for. But obviously, Shailene is super talented and it’s awesome to see her take off.”

However, the upcoming musical is said to be focused mainly on the events of the pilot, an episode which — are you following us here — Woodley appeared in. So a cameo would actually, like, fit the timeline!

Obviously this is 99 percent (…100 percent?) a dream. Woodley is a very busy star and also we have no control over the creative direction of the show. (This is our fantasy! Not something the people putting on the musical have expressed any interest in having happen!) All we’re saying is, in our opinion, it would really put the celeb dazzle cherry on top of what’s already going to be a very fulfilling evening.

Even without Woodley, though, the show boasts star power in its core cast, with “Pretty Little Liars” actor Brendan Robinson playing Seth Cohen and “Awkward” star Greer Grammer playing Summer. Very, very exciting casting.

California, here we (all, metaphorically) come!

News: Researchers Say Virgin Mary Actually God’s Second Choice To Bear Son

NEW HAVEN, CT—In a startling discovery that sheds new light on the woman Christians revere as the mother of their Lord and Savior, researchers at Yale Divinity School announced Monday that the Blessed Virgin Mary was in fact God’s second choice to bear His only son.

A nearly 2,000-year-old Aramaic scroll unearthed last month in Nazareth reportedly describes a peasant woman named Erica with whom God is thought to have entered into a relationship around 5 BC, hoping that in her womb His divine essence might take on human form.

“According to this ancient text, when God first broached the idea of a child, Erica broke down and told Him she just wasn’t ready for the Incarnation of the Messiah,” theology professor Michael T. Freyland said of the parchment found in a cave near the Church of the Annunciation, the site at which the archangel Gabriel …

News in Brief: Child Therapist Excited To Actually Be Seeing Patient With Psychological Issues

MINNEAPOLIS—Saying she was glad to finally be able to apply her psychiatric training, local child therapist Pamela Thornton expressed her excitement to reporters Friday at the prospect of seeing a patient with actual psychological issues. “It’s thrilling to have a kid in here for once who’s truly suffering from a behavioral disorder that legitimately requires regular therapy sessions,” said Thornton, adding that she was elated at the opportunity to delve into past traumas, evaluate recurring thoughts, and set up a treatment plan for the child who had genuine, clinically diagnosable depression. “This isn’t just some kid who started talking back to his parents or can’t sit still for more than a minute—this one could, in all reality, potentially pose a risk to himself or others. It’s kind of a treat.” Thornton later confirmed to reporters that she still planned on prescribing the same …

And, sometimes, that’s absolutely true. Relationships have to be built on trust, and if you’re constantly obsessing about your partner cheating, then you’re not allowing that trust to happen. The only way that relationships can last in the long term is if we let our partners have the independence that everyone deserves.

Julianne Hough Was An Extra In ‘Harry Potter,’ But We Actually Already Knew That

Julianne Hough took part in Us Weekly’s “25 Things You Don’t Know About Me” feature, in which the magazine asks celebrities to list 25 interesting or random facts about themselves that the public probably doesn’t know about them. But Hough’s list comes up short, because there’s at least one fact we definitely already knew:

11. I was a Gryffindor in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone,” but don’t blink or you’ll miss me!

While this isn’t news to us, maybe it’s news to you. And there really isn’t a bad time to revisit a moment in Harry Potter history. Hough’s role as a Hogwarts student was blink and you’ll miss it, indeed. She can be seen sitting near Hermoine (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) while they cheer on Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) at a Quidditch match.

juliannehoughharrypotter

Hough has actually spoken about her appearance in the beloved 2001 children’s movie on more than one occasion.

“Oh, yes. I remember it like it was yesterday. I’m still such a big fan. I always go and watch the midnight showing, so I’m excited to see it,” she told Parade magazine in 2011 when asked if the ending of the film series felt bittersweet.

She added, “I might get in trouble for this, but I actually stole the Gryffindor scarf that I had as a memento. I was like, ‘I have to keep this scarf!’”

Then in 2012, during an appearance on “Live With Kelly,” Hough brought up the scarf story again and admitted that while filming the movie as an 11-year-old she fell hard for Harry Potter himself.

“I was kind of in love, especially with Daniel Radcliffe. I wrote him a love note. It was Valentine’s Day and I got him the Valentino Beanie Baby. I never heard back,” she said.

If people weren’t aware she had an uncredited role in the first “Harry Potter” movie, well they are now.

You can also see Hough in this deleted “Harry Potter” scene

Your Favorite Bohemian Garb Is Actually Traditional Ukrainian Costume

VitaKin Kilimi

Ukraine has been in the forefront of international thought a lot recently (and not for particularly pleasant reasons), but its reach has extended far beyond the front page—whether you were aware or not, the Ukrainian influence has fully arrived in our closets. Think that groovy boho embroidered peasant blouse was nationless? Think again. Whether it’s festival girl du jour Alexa Chung, wearing an embroidered peasant shirt hailing from the Eastern European region with a pair of denim cut-offs, or the Slavic red patterns on the runway at Valentino spring 2015 couture (complete with models sporting traditional braid crowns), Ukrainian traditional costume has knowingly and unknowingly permeated fashion for years, and now the spotlight on the country’s aesthetic is in full swing once again. Only this time, it’s hailing from the motherland.

Leandra Medine

Expand

The sudden rise and appreciation of Ukrainian traditional dress on an international level can be credited to Vita Kin, the designer of Vyshyvanka by Vita Kin, who uses the name for the traditional Ukrainian blouse, a vyshyvanka, in her label’s name. Recently, the designer has become an international sensation, with local fashion fixtures like Asya Mkhitaryan wearing the designer’s version of a zhupan (a traditional Ukrainian jacket) to Paris Fashion Week, while street style stars like Anna Dello Russo and Leandra Medine are taking the bucolic style from the countryside onto Western asphalt. “Ukrainians have a unique method of decorating clothing with embroidery, and that’s always impressed me,” says Kin about her designs via email. “I adapted this ancient heritage into a modern context, adding a seventies vibe, when clothing was more relaxed and friendly. It’s a bohemian eccentricity in a very luxe execution.” That execution is her distinctly modern translations of the straight-from-the-village vyshyvanka in shades of marmalade with crude scenes of birds and flowers in a thigh-skimming sky blue dress, or in a full length frock replete with Gzhel style embroidery soon to be sold on an international platform (courtesy of Matches) and in Kiev-based concept stores. For a bit of context, a few years ago the idea of a Ukrainian citizen wearing traditional costume on the street was considered costume at best, a dowdy faux pas at worst. Flash forward to this month, where due to the quick rise of requests, Kin is overwhelmed with interest, and can no longer accommodate individual orders or samples for shoots.

Caraway

Expand

Photo: Courtesy of Caraway

The recent frenzy over Kin’s designs aside, it’s worth considering whether the rise of Ukrainian traditional costume in fashion is more than just au courant street-style bait. Historically, Ukrainians have attempted to separate themselves from the perception of their country as only “Little Russia,” especially now, when the political state is one of unrest (from the demonstrations in Maidan square to Russia’s invasion of Crimea). There is a school of thought that the recent use of Ukrainian dress isn’t just a fashion statement, it’s a unifying statement. “I think that all type of vyshyvankas are extremely beautiful and I am proud to see people wearing them, but to me fashion in the sense of culture is not about obvious references,” says Mercedes-Benz Kiev Fashion Days creative director Daria Shapovalova, “I think [traditional dress] is connected to the fact that Ukraine is experiencing this moment in politics.”

Expand

Photo: Courtesy of Adriano Cisani / whatastreet.com / @whatastreet

As for those “not so obvious” interpretations of Ukrainian natural dress, they exist in the avant-garde frontier of Ukrainian fashion. There is Karavay (a label beloved by Ukrainian editors) who keeps their clothing classic, dotting the arms and bust of a black diaphanous gown with delicate Slavic-style embroidery of flowers, or translates the traditional pattern onto a tight, curve-skimming zip-up dress. There are also the more abstract interpretations, like those from Ukrainian designer Ksenia Marchenko of Ksenia Schnaider, who pixelates and enlarges traditional Slavic patterns, sometimes while still utilizing typical curve-emphasizing Ukrainian silhouettes. “Being inspired by Ukrainian traditions is huge trend now here. Our prints from spring 2015 and fall 2016 were our answer to the situation in Ukraine, revolution and war,” says Marchenko. “When designing prints for our collections, [design partner] Anton Schnaider was thinking about the perception of Ukraine in global minds. The idea of uncertainty of all things Ukrainian is transferred through the use of blurred traditional Ukrainian ornaments.” But one thing that is decidedly still in focus, at least when it comes to Ukrainian fashion? Traditional roots are here to stay, whether it is in Kiev—or Paris.

12 Beauty Products Your Mom Actually Wants For Mother’s Day

This article was written by Katie Chang and was originally published on AskMen.com.

As a grooming writer and apothecary owner, I get frustrated when guys tell me they’re afraid to purchase anything beauty-related for their moms on Mother’s Day. And I hear the same lines over and over again.

“It’s too personal.” “What if she doesn’t like it?” “I don’t know where to begin.”

The list goes on and on.

I think the key to coming up with a great (much more than good) Mother’s Day gift idea is just a little consideration. Namely: what kind of woman is your mom?

Because based on her personality, you can absolutely find a beauty product she will love. For example: even the most practical and low-maintenance mom will appreciate a little pampering, as long as the gift is truly useful and practical.

So, here are 12 beauty products for every type of mom. They’ve been carefully selected by yours truly, in the hopes that your mom will received a personalized and, more importantly, thoughtful, present this Mother’s Day.

The newest perfume launch from the famed fashion label celebrates today’s style-driven woman: someone who isn’t afraid to lead the pack, and happily sets her own rules. While the scent opens with fruity and floral notes of boysenberry and Himalayan red grass, it dries down to a warm finish of sandalwood, cedar, and amber. It’s beguiling, modern, and incredibly chic, much like the face of the fragrance: Danish model Freja Beha Erichsen.

Too Faced Melted Metal Liquified Metallic Lipstick

Here’s the thing about wearing a statement lipstick: no matter what shade you choose, the color should be bold, crisp, and long-lasting. And these tubes do just that: they’re easy to apply, come in a range of vibrant shades, and stay put. Just don’t be thrown off by the metallic part. Unlike glitter — which winds up looking messy or worse, immature — metallics help pouts look full.

Ranging from blonde to black, there’s a shade to match every hair color, and the water and sweat-resistant pigment won’t budge until it’s shampooed out. Oud is a note that’s been trending in the fragrance world, as of late. While a succinct description of the scent is difficult to give — fans claim it can be a combination of woody, sweet, and floral — no one can argue that it brings a luxurious dimension to any perfume. And this one from the legendary French accessories and fragrance house is no exception: it’s beguiling, warm and hypnotic.

Bobbi Brown Face and Body Bronzing Duo

2015-04-28-1430253591-946334-10bobbi.jpg

While sun lends skin a healthy glow, I don’t care for what else it can cause: like wrinkles, dryness, and even worse, cancer. This is where I’m all for faking it (with some bronzer). Just find one that’s shimmer-free and not too orange, though, for a natural-looking finish. This sleek compact is especially handy, since it contains two shades that can be used on both face and body.

#LeanInTogether And Getty Images Team Up To Show What Fatherhood Actually Looks Like

Stock photos used to illustrate online articles are meant to reflect everyday life. Ironically, they rarely do. Getty Images and LeanIn.Org have a plan to change that.

With the launch of #LeanInTogether — a campaign that encourages men to help women in the fight for gender equality — Getty Images and LeanIn.Org have partnered to bring realistic stock photos of men to online editors, and therefore readers.

The Huffington Post spoke with Sheryl Sandberg about the impact diverse photos could have, and what she hopes the series will achieve. “You can’t be what you can’t see,” she said. “So having men see active pictures of themselves and other men as fathers, as people supporting people at work — I think it’s inspiring.”

Instead of endless photos of white guys in suits — or any other ridiculous and cliche portrayals we so often see in stock photos — the #LeanInTogether shows a different side of fatherhood and masculinity.

“I think people want to do the right thing, they want to portray women the right way, they want to portray men the right way but we often don’t know how,” Sandberg said. “Getty is saying here is a portrayal of women and men that Lean In supports and that we support. And similarly, men are saying here’s a portrayal of what I believe as a man and that this is good for men.”

Wired 25: 25 Rappers Who Actually Changed The Game [Photos]

For the second day in a row, the great debate on whether Iggy Azalea’s short but visible career should be considered for game changer status. The Australia rapper took exception to Twitter reactions sparked by us after she bigged up her cultural impact in a recent GQ interview.

Barring a few obvious selections (Eminem, any extension of the Wu-Tang Clan), here are 25 rappers who actually changed the game, whether it be from raw skill, business savvy or a bit of both.

We never dissed Iggy but she does have a little ways to go before her legacy can be used as trump card. That’s in any circumstance. Peace to Lizzuendo for the inspiration. Follow us on Twitter and all forms social media as well. We are here for you.

This Is What The Wedding Night Is Actually Like, According To Married People

Expectations for the wedding night are high. The goal is to have the best sex of your life in the swankiest hotel room you’ve ever stayed in — all while managing to keep your eyes open after an exceedingly exhausting day.

But that’s not always how things pan out. Below are 21 first-person accounts of how newlyweds actually spent their very first night as husband and wife, according to Redditors and HuffPost readers.

1. “Having not eaten all day due to stress and nerves, we realized we were STARVING, and ordered Chinese food from the only place open at 4 a.m. We had more sex while waiting for food, then gorged ourselves on delicious Chinese food and fell asleep watching ‘Wayne’s World.’ It was actually awesome.”

2. “She sat on the floor in front of me. We watched TV while I took the 6,000 hairpins out of her hair. It was a horrible game of pick-up sticks as they were all intertwined. After that we crashed.”

3. “We slept in separate beds! #HotelBookingError!”

4. “We were married at the courthouse by the justice of the peace. We went and had lunch afterwards, a beer, then picked up our 2-year-old and went home. No fancy wedding, dress, or trip, but I married my best friend and that alone made it the best day of my life.”

5. It was chaste. My in-laws got us a hotel room for the night in a cutesy inn. The room was directly above theirs.”

6. “We slept then woke up and ate cake naked in bed.”

7. “We got back to the hotel, I carried her across the threshold, and we began to consummate our vows. Moments after we started, there’s a knock at the door. It’s my mom. She then said we should both come down and visit with the family. Not preferred.”

8. “It was nearly 50 years ago, but it was one of the best days of my life. We got married in the morning and after a short reception, we drove to a hotel about halfway to where we were stopping for the honeymoon. We were both sexually inexperienced so it was great fun finding out together.”

9. “Our room had this awesome giant shower with at least 15 different heads and sprayers. We talked about how cool it was for like five minutes then went to bed. My clothes didn’t make it to our hotel room so I had to walk-of-shame in my tux the next morning.”

via Tumblr

10. “Sleeping in my husband’s room at his parents’ house after Chick-fil-A for dinner!”

11. “My wife was literally crying because I was taking too long to undo the 800 buttons on the back of her dress that was now hurting her shoulders too much to wear. Then she cried as I pulled out the 8,000 hairpins. A few strands of hair and 30 minutes later we attempted sex, both decided we were tired, said ‘f**k it,’ and went to bed cuddling. Love that woman.”

12. “We had been drinking for hours. We ran into our room, had a decent quickie, ran out into the hallway where I declared in a loud, drunken whisper, ‘I don’t have panties on,’ while following our friends to an after-party in another hotel room. Turns out my mom was behind me and howled with laughter, hugged me and told me I was the perfect daughter. Then she handed me a bottle of whiskey and sent me off with my husband to brew a wicked hangover.”

via Giphy

13. “We eloped without telling anyone and got married in the basement of the courthouse in Harrison, Arkansas. Went home, wife went to her overnight job while I laid on the couch and watched TV.”

14. “We had our hotel room the day before the wedding. Got to the church, did our thing, had a blast at the reception. We leave the reception, my bride tells me her period started at the church. We walked around our favorite store and bought a new board game. We played Monopoly and watched TV on the most comfortable bed we had ever slept on.”

15. “We were exhausted and got to our hotel pretty late. My wife dressed up in some sexy lingerie she got as a gift and we proceeded to crawl into bed. We ate wedding food leftovers packed up for us and had a bottle of champagne and chocolate strawberries while our dog snuggled with us and begged for scraps. It was perfect.”

16. “No sex. Only sleep. Sweet, sweet sleep.”

17. “I was eight-months pregnant when we got married. I fell asleep around 10 p.m. and my husband stayed up watching TV. I expected him to come in after a few hours so we could consummate our marriage. Nope. I woke up around 2:30 a.m. and he was still watching TV. I couldn’t fall back asleep and so I leaned over to grab my iPad to read and that’s when my water broke. Seven hours later we had our son.”

18. “You know how the back of a shampoo bottle says ‘lather, rinse, repeat’? Well it was the adult version of that in our awesome hotel room with a late checkout to catch up on the sleeping part.”

19. “My husband and I were both exhausted, so we crawled into our fancy hotel room bed. About an hour after going to bed, I woke up vomiting and with horrible diarrhea. Something I ate hadn’t settled well. My husband held my hair back as I vomited, only reinforcing the reasons I married him in the first place.”

via Giphy

20. “We had a snow-themed wedding, complete with the guests throwing fake snow at us when we left the reception. It was EVERYWHERE. I couldn’t get it out of my crevices, including ‘down there,’ and I had to take three showers to get it off of me. We also had to call housekeeping to bring us another set of sheets, because it was like sleeping on sand.

21. “We had to stop at the drugstore to buy condoms. I was still in my wedding dress.”

Here’s Why We’re Actually Still Watching Crime Shows

Since I write television, allow me to begin by stating the obvious: America has become more polarized than at any time since the 1960s. People on opposite sides of the partisan divide have not only ceased listening to each other, they are also looking to buy homes and rent apartments in politically homogenous neighborhoods (and cities!); so that the newspaper resting at the bottom of their cages won’t ruffle their ideological feathers; so they can tell birds singing different songs to flock off.

In another chapter from the hard to believe, crossing party lines has become a criminal offense, so that it’s impossible to get anything done without offering insult to one side or the other. And every action by moderately opposing forces is greeted with hysteria. Democrats adopt a Republican health care proposal from the 1990s, which was actually implemented by a Republican governor (and eventual Republican presidential nominee), and the rage on the right cannot be contained. Democrats furiously condemn a policy of fighting a war in Iraq and keeping prisoners in Guantanamo and the ethics of drone strikes and then, when they gain power…oh, the list is too long.

For better or worse, the justice system has become the last refuge for those of us looking for common ties with our fellow Americans. The need to arrest criminals and put them on trial transcends our petty differences, and allows varied communities to unite in common cause. Murder is terribly hard to politicize. As one of Henry the II’s sons says in The Lion in Winter, “I’ve never heard a corpse ask how it got so cold.”

And homicide investigations are largely successful. In most big cities, perhaps especially in Los Angeles and New York, every effort is made to comply with the law while hunting down those who have not. The LAPD polls regularly as the most respected municipal institution in Los Angeles. Our law enforcement agencies exist as working proof that government can move competently – even with bravery and selflessness – to do the right thing.

The unconscious fantasy element of procedural drama has evolved, from marveling at the intelligence of a particular detective, into a wistful desire that our entire body politic could put aside our mostly imaginary arguments long enough to focus on the crisis at hand: to drop our opinions in favor of the pattern of facts.

We love a good whodunit; bringing a murderer to heel satisfies our heroic impulses, and unites the audience with shared, public approval. If only we could figure out how to respect each other as well as we do the abstract principles of the justice system! That, ladies and gentlemen, is a mystery we ought to solve together.

In the meantime, procedural drama will have to do.

Sofia Coppola's 'Little Mermaid' Parody Actually Looks Like A Movie We'd Watch

Sofia Coppola’s version of “A Little Mermaid” is still a long way from theaters, but Funny or Die has already whet our appetite with its spot-on parody of the unmade film. AnnaSophia Robb plays Ariel, obsessed with her shell-shaped smart phone and Prince Eric (Evan Peters) who floats around in a pool with a crown and Ray Bans, and take cues from classic Coppola aesthetic (see “The Bling Ring,” “Marie Antoinette” and “Lost in Translation”). They get drunk. They do karaoke. They smoke cigarettes under water. To be honest, it’s actually a movie we’d pay money to see.
