Drake Addresses “Culture Vulture” Tag, Triggers Wiley

London Celebrity Sightings - April 11, 2019

Drake is known for co-opting various styles, so inevitably he got slapped with a culture vulture tag, by some—in particular UK grime artist Wiley. This was among the topics the Toronto rapper addressed during a recent sit down with BBC Radio 1’s 1Xtra Rap Show.

Speaking to DJ Tiffany Calver, the 6 God dismissed any culture vulture rhetoric as a manifestation of haters.

“I hate that people think that me being into music from these kids that are trying to like make it and trying to build a name for themselves is like, ‘Oh, that’s some culture vulture,” he said. “What does that even mean? I don’t understand. Would you rather me not acknowledge anything or support? That’s some real confused like…hater sh*t.”

While Drake has been known for liberally hopping on the waves of, for example, the trap rap styles of the Migos or grime aesthetics of Skepta, he does give the originators their props.

He added, “I see it a lot. I’ll never understand how supporting somebody’s song or even going a step further giving somebody a song or linking so, I’ll never understand how that’s not viewed as something admirable.”

Drake then added that it was Wiley’s comments that got under his skin. In turn, Wiley took to social media to respond, and he feels a ways.

We’d bet good money this gets squashed sooner rather than later. Listen to a portion of the BBC Radio 1 interview below.

NMAAHC Addresses Timothy Anne Burnside’s Hip-Hop Exhibit Appointment Debate

National Museum of African American History and Culture

Source: ullstein bild Dtl. / Getty

The National African American History and Culture Museum found itself in the middle of an explosive Twitter debate regarding cultural historian and museum specialist Timothy Anne Burnside, who happens to be white. With critique cropping up that a white person was the lead for an ongoing Hip-Hop exhibit at the museum, the NMAAHC has issued a statement addressing the controversy while noting Black leadership is indeed behind its larger curation efforts.

By way of a new release titled “Real African American History: A Story Told by Many Voices,” the NMAAHC expressed sensitivity to the concerns raised by @DJChubbESwagg and others surrounding Burnside’s appointment and her race. In its own words, the NMAAHC missive hammered home that Black voices are indeed shaping the cultural and historical landscape of the popular Smithsonian destination.

From the news release:

The museum is shaped and led by a leadership team that is largely African American — and the staff is firmly grounded in African American history and committed to the mission of the museum. We value that diversity and also recognize the importance of diversity of thought, perspectives and opinions. It has helped make the museum what it is today.

Out of a deep commitment, Ms. Timothy Anne Burnside launched the Smithsonian’s first hip-hop collecting initiative 12 years ago while at the National Museum of American History. Since joining the Museum in 2009, she has also played a key role in building the hip-hop collection as part of a larger curatorial team. Dr. Dwandalyn Reece, the curator of music and performing arts, leads that effort. We are proud of their work.

In the flurry of tweets last week, it may have been missed by some that Dr. Reece is a Black woman and highly respected in her field.

The museum adds in the release that it will work with the Association of African American Museums and other related groups to bring people of color into the institution and train them in the varying levels of approaches made in the museum space.

Via Twitter, veteran journalist and activist Harry Allen retweeted the NMAAHC’s release, writing in its caption, “This is, essentially, a non-statement.”

This morning shortly after the tweet went out, Twitter user @Spacehuntress wrote, “This entire ugly episode has greatly diminished my excitement about visiting the museum” – echoing what appeared to be a growing sentiment.

Twitter user @Cherry_LA adds, “You recognize the lack of diversity in museum senior management but still didn’t hire an African American to curate Hip & Hop a artform we created? Shame on you and your empty words and promises.”

A solution was presented by Twitter user @IamJoshImmanuel which read as such: “They could’ve just had legends come in once a month to talk hip hop culture or found a black person. It’s really not that difficult to find and if it is, wait for one.”

There will surely be new conversations to crop up from this latest development.

Drake Addresses Blackface Controversy, Hood Pass Still Under Review

Washington Wizards v Toronto Raptors - Game One

Source: Tom Szczerbowski / Getty

Drake finally picked up his smartphone and took to Instagram to address at least one portion of Pusha T’s scathing “The Story Of Adidon” diss track. With the Virginia rapper using a photo of the Canadian superstar in Blackface, Drizzy clarified the reasons behind the picture but nothing else.

“I know everyone is enjoying the circus but I want to clarify one image in question,” Drake wrote Wednesday (May 30) at 10:55PM.

He added, “The picture is from 2007, a time in my life when I was an actor and I was working on a project that was about young black actors struggling to get roles, being stereotyped and type cast. The photos represented how African Americans were once wrongfully portrayed in entertainment.

Drizzy goes on to say that he and fellow actor Mazin Elsadig were attempting to highlight the battles they had as young Black actors trying to get into the game. Elsadig, 30, is an actor of Sudanese descent and worked with Drake as a cast member of Degrassi: The Next Generation.

What we’re wondering is of all the flame Push gave Drake, including claims of a kid with a porn star chief among them, it is beyond curious he chose this as a moment to speak out. Stay tuned as this will surely heat up over the next few days.

Urban One Founder Cathy Hughes Addresses WKYS Prank, Hosts Taking Week Of Healing To Refocus

The Fam In The Morning

Source: Cleavon / WKYS

This past week, there was heavy drama on the radio waves between DC’s WKYS The Fam hosts Danni Starr, QuickSilva, and DJ 5’9 after Starr was “ambushed” by her co-hosts after they invited a woman she denied a babysitting job to on the show. Urban One founder Cathy Hughes has issued a statement regarding the drama, showing her support for a fellow woman in the media.

Hughes’ statement reads:

Yesterday I co-hosted The Fam on WKYS 93.9 FM in Washington D.C. with the female talent of this station as an act of solidarity to support the show’s co-host Danni Starr who was placed in an embarrassing situation on live radio Thursday – International Women’s Day. The aftermath of this emotionally charged interaction became national news and has played out on social media for the past 48 hours.

After a full investigation, I’ve learned this incident was a radio prank ‘gone bad.’ None of our talent were adequately informed or prepped to have effectively executed this prank on Danni Starr. We have taken the necessary steps to resolve this matter. I agreed with Danni Starr’s expressed public sentiments that QuickSilva and DJ 5’9 are good guys who would never deliberately harm her or intentionally cause her embarrassment.

I stand firmly behind The Fam and will be providing the team a time of healing and refocus so they can continue to entertain, inspire and inform our listeners in the morning. To that end, next week’s show will be hosted by KYS DC’s afternoon drive personality Angie Ange and Baltimore Q92’s Konan, who himself is DC homegrown.

Once again, I apologize to our listeners who had to experience this most unfortunate incident. I appreciate your continued support of WKYS, but more importantly our talent, Danni Starr, QuickSilva and DJ 5’9. I’m prayerful we all will emerge a stronger family.

Class act.

‘Birdman’ Director Alejandro G. Iñárritu Addresses Immigration Reform, Donald Trump In Speech

As Donald Trump gave “Saturday Night Live” viewers a satirical sneak peak at what life in the United States would be like if he became president, Mexican director Alejandro Gonzalez Iñárritu spoke candidly about what life is actually like for Mexicans living in Mexico and the U.S. today.

Iñárritu delivered his speech Saturday at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, where he was being honored alongside artist James Turrell as part of the museum’s Art+Film Gala.

Below is a partial transcript of the “Birdman” director’s speech, which was originally published in English and in Spanish on Medium.com.

As a Mexican, I consider the honor I am receiving tonight a recognition to the whole Mexican community for their eminent hard work and vibrant cultural contributions made for years and years to the city of Los Angeles and the United States.

I have been extremely fortunate to shoot films around the world; sharing human experiences with different kinds of people, regardless of where we are from.

We are the only creatures on planet Earth that want to see ourselves in the mirror. Because we know we are the same, but we are different, we need to share. We need to see ourselves projected in other members of our species to, in turn, understand ourselves. Cinema, is that mirror. It is a bridge between the others and us.

Unfortunately, there are currently people proposing we build walls, instead of bridges. I must confess that I debated with myself, if I should bring up this uncomfortable subject tonight. But in light of the constant and relentless xenophobic comments that have been expressed recently against my Mexican fellows, it is inevitable.

These comments would be unacceptable if they were targeted against another minority, nevertheless, these millions of people do not have a voice or any rights  — even though they have lived here all of their lives.

These sentiments have been widely spread by the media without shame, embraced and cheered by leaders and communities around the U.S. The foundation of all this is so outrageous that it can easily be minimized as an “SNL” sketch, a mere entertainment, a joke.

But the words that have been expressed are not a joke. Words have real power; and similar words in the past have both created and triggered enormous suffering for millions of humans beings, especially throughout the last century.

Visit Medium.com to read Iñárritu’s speech in its entirety.

Stro Addresses His On-Air Argument With Hot 97’s Ebro

(AllHipHop News) Late last month Brooklyn based rapper/actor Stro (formerly known as Astro) was berated by Hot 97’s Ebro during a visit to the New York City station. The morning show host took issue with Stro questioning NYC radio not playing more homegrown talent.

[ALSO READ: Ebro & Astro Clash Over New York Radio Not Supporting NYC Rappers (VIDEO/POLL)]

“This is that bullsh*t rapper cop-out, because my n*gga, you’re not doing the work,” Ebro told Stro who managed to remain calm during the entire exchange.

The former contestant on The X Factor did an interview with Hip Hop-N-More, and the 18-year-old performer addressed the at times heated discussion with Ebro.

“I think the only valid point he made during that interview was that I gotta do more shows but I’m definitely working on that,” said Stro. “All the other stuff he was saying… he was getting nervous. That’s why I never really argued with him because that’s like when you start arguing with somebody, you don’t have any more facts and you can’t beat the other with facts, you start to get mad. Oh now you wanna fight?”

The “Mighty Healthy ’16” rhymer also talked about the political side of the music industry. Stro expressed he does not have any hard feelings for Hot 97, but he reinforced his critique that his music does not get supported on the station.

“It’s so much politics in Rap now man. I didn’t go there to break the system, I’m not even an OG,” Stro explained. “I go there at Hot 97 pretty often, I’ve been there several times this year already and it’s all love. But I’m like, ‘yo when am I going to get the record played?’”

(AllHipHop News) Meek Mill was caught up in more reports he took shots at another popular rapper. Comments the Philadelphia rapper made during his set at this year’s Made In America Festival were interpreted as a diss toward Future.

PHILADELPHIA—Bracing himself as he monitored an ongoing interrogation from behind a two-way mirror, Detective James Harpin of the Philadelphia Police Homicide Unit nervously crossed his arms as Julian Calandra, the suspect in a recent string of disappearances, slowly swiveled his chair in his direction and began addressing him directly. “Let’s dispense with the formalities, shall we?” the suspect said as he calmly clasped his hands and peered at the reflective side of the mirror, breaking into a thin smile before adding, “What, you don’t think I know you’re there?” “I respect you, Detective, I really do. Seth MacFarlane Finally Addresses Those Caitlyn Jenner ‘Family Guy’ Clips

Earlier this month, Caitlyn Jenner introduced herself to the world with a 22-page Vanity Fair photo shoot. Jenner had only publicly come out as transgender back in April in an interview with Diane Sawyer, which led many to wonder: Did “Family Guy” actually know about this years ago?

Recently, “Family Guy” clips have resurfaced that some are saying predicted Jenner’s transition. In one clip from 2009, Stewie Griffin calls Jenner “an elegant, beautiful Dutch woman.” In another, Jenner dances provocatively for a crowd while Peter Griffin says, “Just wanted to remind you fellas what you’re all fighting for.”

When asked how the jokes came about during a recent “Ted 2” conference call, “Family Guy” creator Seth MacFarlane said he’s “too savvy to comment on the issue to the media.” He explained, “Once the outrage industry shuts down, I will be happy to have an adult conversation about all of this stuff anytime anyone wants, but, even though I’m on the side of support, I just don’t think there’s any way to … you just got to play it safe because the climate is just too charged. Anything I say can and will be used against me.”

The comedian added, “My philosophy is live and let live, and if something makes someone happy, and they’re able to do it — as long as it isn’t hurting anybody — live and let live.”

During the call, MacFarlane also addressed political correctness in comedy, saying that most of the perceived outrage over jokes comes from the media, not the public. He added, “Nobody sets out to — at least I don’t — nobody sets out to offend or shock for the sake of shocking. You set out to get laughs.”

Lil Herb Addresses Getting Snubbed On Freshman List On “XXL” [LISTEN]

XXL magazine has their specific criteria on what constitutes a Freshman or not–and that’s perfectly fine. But that doesn’t always mean their selections don’t result in polarizing discussion that highlight a lot of questionable picks.

When you really wrap your head around the subject, it’s hard to believe that Chicago’s Lil Herb a.k.a. G Herbo has been snubbed two years straight during his period of eligibility. Aside from gaining a sizable following on social media and respect of his identical peer, Lil Durk, he remains one of the only artists able to keep up with Nicki Minaj on track as heard on 2014’s “Chiraq.”

In other words, he’s definitely not one to sleep on.

Although it doesn’t really matter in the grand scheme of things, the Windy City spitter still puts his frustrations to wax on the obviously titled “XXL.” He even went as far to create a mock-up design of the most recent cover.

“I missed that Freshman cover twice like I ain’t a factor (what?)/And still your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper,” he growls over top a bass heavy street heater. On the bright side of things, Lil Herb has accomplished so much at just 19-years-old so his inevitable development will allow the mag to put more Kidd Kidd’s on the cover as he continues to grow as an artist.

Peep Lil Herb’s “XXL” below.

Russell Brand’s New Doc Briefly Addresses Katy Perry Relationship

Katy Perry and Russell Brand have frequently discussed their 14-month marriage since it ended in December of 2011 after Brand sent Perry a text message saying he wanted a divorce. The split was even immortalized onscreen in the 2012 documentary, “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” which featured Perry’s tearful postmortem on their union.

“If you can believe in something great, I feel like you can achieve something great,” Perry said in the film. “I have that same belief system with everything, from career to my life to my personal life, everything. And I will do everything it takes to not fail. And I did everything it took, but it still failed.”

Three years after that movie, the Brand-Perry relationship is back onscreen, albeit briefly. The couple are shown together in “BRAND: A Second Coming,” a new documentary which had its world premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival on Friday night.

While “BRAND” is much more concerned with its title subject, Perry’s presence is unavoidable. In fact, it’s while Brand is married to Perry that he has a sudden epiphany about fame and his place in the world. The comedian is shown visiting Nairobi, where children are digging through a garbage dump loaded with hypodermic needles and other dangerous refuse; the footage is then juxtaposed with Brand discussing a lavish party he attended with Perry. It’s a turning point that pushes Brand away from his ascension up the Hollywood ladder and toward his current place in the lexicon as a political activist.

The film also includes an interview Brand conducted with Perry while they were married, where the singer expresses some trepidation about their relationship (she tells a story about how the Buddha left his wife to search for enlightenment). But Perry says she “picked” Brand because of how his intelligence made her look. The camera remains on after their chat ends, and Perry stages a faux tantrum while Brand playfully admonishes for pretending to break their possessions. “I control the pussy,” she jokes to someone off-camera. (A representative for Perry did not respond to request for comment when contacted by The Huffington Post.)

katy perry russell brand

Brand has frequently said he enjoyed being married to Perry (“I really enjoyed it,” he said last year), and while “BRAND” doesn’t dwell on their relationship too much, it does include one piece of the comic’s philosophy on human connections.

“I cut people out of my life if I think things aren’t functioning,” Brand says over footage of the 39-year-old visiting his grandmother’s gravesite with his father. “And I think, ‘What am I making this effort for?'”

Brand did not attend the debut screening of “BRAND: A Second Coming,” announcing on Friday that he was “very uncomfortable” watching the film. Neither SXSW Film organizers nor “BRAND” director Ondi Timoner knew of Brand’s decision until hours before the premiere.

This year’s South by Southwest Film Festival runs from March 13 until March 21.
