American Animals

Bart Layton

Genre: Thriller

Price: $ 14.99

Release Date: June 1, 2018

American Animals is the unbelievable but entirely true story of four young men who attempt to execute one of the most audacious art heists in U.S. history. The film centers around two friends from the middle-class suburbs of Lexington, Kentucky. Spencer (Barry Keoghan), is determined to become an artist but feels he lacks the essential ingredient that unites all great artists – suffering. His closest friend, Warren (Evan Peters), has also been raised to believe that his life will be special, and that he will be unique in some way. But as they leave the suburbs for universities in the same town, the realities of adult life begin to dawn on them and with that, the realization that their lives may in fact never be important or special in any way. Determined to live lives that are out of the ordinary, they plan the brazen theft of some of the world’s most valuable books from the special collections room of Spencer's college library. Enlisting two more friends, accountancy major Eric (Jared Abrahamson) and fitness fanatic Chas (Blake Jenner), and taking their cues from heist movies, the gang meticulously plots the theft and subsequent fence of the stolen artworks. Although some of the group begin to have second thoughts, they discover that the plan has seemingly taken on a life of its own. Unfolding from multiple perspectives, and innovatively incorporating the real-life figures at the heart of the story, writer-director Bart Layton (The Imposter) takes the heist movie into bold new territory.

Torturing Animals! For Eye Liner?

One of the most heinous acts of animal cruelty is the egregious use of cosmetic ingredient testing on innocent creatures. The procedures are blood-curdling: force-feeding to the point of burst, irritants rubbed into skin and eye without anesthetic, and swallowing chemicals to the point of “lethal dose.” And once testing is complete, the animals who forewent so much of their precious, thankless lives for people’s vanity are callously and painfully discarded as nothing more than worthless detritus.

This shocking disregard for the welfare and sentience of animals needs to end!

2015-08-20-1440110342-8860123-cosmeticsimage.jpg

Thankfully, more than thirty countries including many in the European Union, Israel, and India, among others, have enacted cruelty-free cosmetics policies. This is a great start to be sure, but the United States, probably under industry duress, has not caught up with these forward thinking nations. Indeed, the United States’ regulatory apparatus neither requires nor forbids animal testing for cosmetics, an indefensibly lackadaisical, timid position.

Wayne Pacelle, the President and CEO of The Humane Society of the United States has stated about testing that:

Given the ready availability of alternatives, there is no compelling reason to continue using outdated animal testing methods that cause tremendous animal suffering. So many companies are already using non-animal tests for shampoos, makeups and other products sold around the world, and the United States can help accelerate that trend.

Now is a time to act. There is a new opportunity to end this wicked practice in the United States and it needs our voice! Currently, the Humane Cosmetics Act (H.R. 2858) is a bill that proposes to end cosmetics testing on animals. The HCA calls for a prohibition on animal testing for cosmetics produced in the United States, eased in gradually over the course of a year after passage, and would also prohibit the importation of cosmetics for which animal tests had been conducted (to take effect three years after passage). What’s remarkable about the bill, never mind the substantive affect it will have on the lives of millions of creatures, is its bipartisan nature: the bill is sponsored by Republican Representatives Martha McSally (AZ) and Joe Heck (NV) and Democratic Representatives Don Beyer (VA) and Tony Cárdenas (CA). (As of June 25, H.R. 2858 was referred to the Subcommittee on Health.)

But because this is the United States Congress, passage of the bill might take a while. So while we wait and hope for Congress to act, use this website as a source to see which companies are cruelty free and use no testing while developing their products. In addition, if you feel so included, many groups have already sponsored online petitions to Congress in support of this needed legislation.

The Jewish tradition has been clear. Rabbi Samson Raphael Hirsch said, “here you are faced with God’s teaching, which obliges you not only to refrain from inflicting unnecessary pain on any animal, but to help and, when you can, to lessen the pain whenever you see an animal suffering, even through no fault of yours,” (Horeb, Chapter 60, Sect. 416). It’s taught in the authoritative work Minchat Chinuch (80) that “there is not only a prohibition of causing pain to animals, but there is also an obligation to prevent their pain wherever possible.” While there may be a right to conduct animal testing to produce life-saving research, there is still a duty to reduce all animal suffering at all costs. And when looking at cosmetics, surely it is inappropriate to torture animals.

This practice of torturing animals for beauty items is cruel and indefensible. This is the most opportune time to end this horrendous practice once and for all in the United States. And the numbers are on our side: a poll taken in 2013 found that 73 percent of American voters are in favor of banning animal testing for cosmetics. Let us do our part to flaunt our enshrined rights to advocate for this bill! Now is the time for us all to get active and vocal, to call upon our elected officials to support this Act and join other countries of the world by transitioning towards a cruelty free culture.

Rabbi Dr. Shmuly Yanklowitz is the Founder and CEO of The Shamayim V’Aretz Institute and the author of eight books on Jewish ethics.

Empire State Building Pays Tribute To Endangered Animals, Remembers Cecil The Lion

Cecil the lion, a majestic black-maned beast who once roamed the woodlands of Zimbabwe’s Hwange, was found dead last month on the outskirts of the national park. He had been killed by an American dentist for tens of thousands of dollars, then skinned and beheaded for a hunting trophy.

Cecil’s death has sparked outrage worldwide, as people everywhere lament the damage that humans continue to inflict on the populations of not just lions, but the planet’s many endangered creatures. On Saturday night, the Empire State Building served as a timely, sky-high reminder of this devastating impact, as images and video of threatened animals were projected onto the façade of the iconic New York City skyscraper.

Cecil was one of the animals featured.

For three hours, “insects, sea creatures, mammals, and birds crawled, swam, and flew over” the Empire State Building “as spectators ‘oohed’ and ‘awed,’” said The Verge. Snow leopards, tigers, lemurs, and manta rays were among the creatures on display.

The spectacle, achieved with the help of 40 projectors, was organized by the Oceanic Preservation Society and the filmmakers of “Racing Extinction,” an upcoming documentary about humans’ impact on threatened species.

“I’m hoping with this film and this event, we can raise awareness and start a movement,” the film’s director Louie Psihoyos (of “The Cove” fame) told The Verge.

NBC New York says the projections were a first for the Empire State Building, which is typically lit up with colors or, on occasion, light shows.

In total, 160 species were featured on the skyscraper. The New York Times says the production cost $ 1 million.

Jon Stewart Reportedly Bought A Farm In New Jersey For Homeless Animals

File this one under: Yay!!!

Famously animal-loving Jon Stewart is said to have bought a farm in New Jersey, for purposes of giving home to rescued farm animals.

The announcement was made by Farm Sanctuary, which has three of its own pastoral paradises for neglected and abused farm animals.

Stewart and his wife Tracey are well-known animal advocates who have a longstanding relationship with with the group. In fact Tracey has a book about animals coming out in the fall, called Do Unto Animals: A Friendly Guide to How Animals Live, and How We Can Make Their Lives Better, with some of the proceeds going to Farm Sanctuary.

The couple has a small menagerie of their own already — Tracey told USA Today that their brood currently includes two each of kids, pigs, hamsters, guinea pigs and fish, plus four dogs, three rabbits and a parrot.

“All rescues,” she said. “Except for the children.”

Farm Sanctuary spokesperson Meredith Turner couldn’t give The Huffington Post many details about the Stewarts’ reported farm animal haven, but she did say, “We are ecstatic that there are people in the world like Jon and Tracey who care about the plight of factory farmed animals, and we encourage others to join them in support of Farm Sanctuary’s efforts to rescue, provide shelter and advocacy for these beautiful individuals.”

Drea de Matteo Joins Cruelty Free International Campaign to end Cosmetics Testing on Animals

If you are anything like me, you were a fan of The Sopranos and you probably remember the scene leading up to the demise of Adriana La Cerva, excellently played by Drea de Matteo, as one of the most nail-biting, heart-wrenching of the series.

Again, if you’re at all like me, you were drawn in to the FX drama Sons of Anarchy, and found yourself rooting for Wendy Case who, in the end, became one of the most redeeming characters on the show. This character was also flawlessly portrayed by de Matteo.

If either of the above is true for you then you’ll understand why I am thrilled that Drea is the latest celebrity to lend her support to the Cruelty Free International campaign to end cosmetics testing on animals in the United States.

“Animals shouldn’t suffer for the sake of beauty. I’m proud to join Cruelty Free International in calling on the United States to end cosmetics testing on animals.” Drea de Matteo

2015-04-24-1429846638-198117-Drea_de_MatteoLeslie_Hassler_3322.jpg

The Cruelty Free International photo shoot became an activity for the whole family including her daughter Alabama, son Blackjack, and rescue pup Blankie.

Shopping cruelty free is also often a family affair, with conscientious shoppers actively looking for products that are not tested on animals for themselves as well as for their kids and companion animals.

Thankfully it’s not hard to shop cruelty free for everyone as many Leaping Bunny certified companies offer products for the whole family. For example, for furry friends, there is John Paul Pet, by luxury beauty brand Paul Mitchell and Halo, Purely for Pets® owned in part by award-winning talk show host Ellen Degeneres which offers a range of grooming supplies. Kiss My Face and Badger Balm are among the many companies that offer a range of cruelty free products from bubble bath to sunscreen specially formulated for kids and babies.

For cosmetic companies forgoing animal testing, it is not only the right thing to do for animals but it’s also a smart business move. A March 2015 Nielsen survey found that “not tested on animals” was the most important packaging claim among those surveyed.

“When it comes to claims in the beauty aisle, consumers appear most invested in animal welfare, as “not tested on animals” was the most important packaging claim among those surveyed” – James Russo, SVP, Global Consumer Insights for Nielsen.

One of the things I found most interesting about this survey was the span of generations it included. Of those surveyed, 37% were Millennials (age 19-34), 29% were from Generation X, 24% were Baby Boomers, 5% were from the Greatest Generation (age 69+) and 5% were from Generation Z (age 18 or younger).

That’s right, Generation Z is officially a consumer demographic and, according to a recent Forbes article, they are a force to be reckoned with. Clearly the demand for cruelty free products isn’t going away.

With high consumer demand for cruelty free products across multiple generations and fantastic celebrity supporters like Drea de Matteo helping to keep the awareness high, we are getting closer to a day when animal testing for cosmetics in the US will be a thing of the past.

If you’re like me, you think that day can’t come soon enough.
