Einstein and Newton were smart guys. But if you want to study the mind of a true genius, the best place to find one is not a science laboratory. It's a casino. Because that's the workplace of society's finest intellectual specimen: the professional poker player. In The World's Greatest Poker Players Answer 14 Questions, Mike Romiltan picks the brains of some of the game's most brilliant and succesful players, including poker legend Doyle Brunson, 14-time bracelet winner Phil Hellmuth, the ridiculously wealthy Antonio Esfandiari, the ever arrogant Doug Polk, speech-play grandmaster William Kassouf, and many others. The book is essential reading for all poker fans, as well as anyone who has an advanced appreciation of the human mind.

How Many Lives Did Gun Control Laws Save in Las Vegas? (Answer: Probably Lots)

I’m pro-gun. I say that up front because your beliefs about my intentions will color how you see this post. My intention is to be objective. You can be the judge.

The Vegas gunman used bump stocks on semi-automatic rifles. Those were totally legal. They are also a poor choice of weapons, or so I am told by gun experts. In fact, they are so inaccurate at the distance involved in the Vegas incident that professional snipers say Paddock could have done more damage with a single-shot weapon and some aiming.

The gun experts I talked to (informally) also agree that the shooter would have killed more than a hundred additional people had he used a fully-automatic weapon. You can legally buy an automatic weapon that was made prior to 1986, for about $ 15-20K. The shooter was a millionaire, and he seemed to know a lot about guns. He would have known a fully-automatic rifle is designed to not jam the way his bump stock rifles did. He would have known they fire more bullets per second and more accurately. The death toll would have been much higher had the Vegas gunman used the right weapon.

He knew a fully automatic rifle would be more lethal than a bump stock rifle.

He was rich enough to afford the fully automatic weapon.

He had months to plan and prepare.

He was smart.

And yet he didn’t use a fully-automatic weapon in the attack.

The probable reason is that a fully-automatic weapon is harder to obtain and it raises some flags. I believe even private transactions with those weapons require some government paperwork.

I’m speculating, of course, but it seems to me that the ban on fully-automatic weapons did, over time, create enough friction for the Vegas gunman that he decided to settle for relatively worse weapons.

Ask a gun expert how many more people would be dead if automatic weapons were as easy to procure as bump stocks. My estimate of a hundred extra dead in Vegas is probably low.

Gun control apparently worked in this case, at least to an important degree. The tragedy could have been far bigger. A little bit of friction for obtaining a fully automatic weapon probably saved lives. We can’t know for sure what was in the mind of a madman, but we do know that any kind of friction causes some people to change plans. That’s probably what happened here.

My hypothesis is that crazy people will use whatever weapon is the most effective killing device they can obtain at acceptable cost (friction). Gun laws introduce friction. They are not intended to stop every type of crime or to deter every type of criminal. But it looks like they helped a bit in Vegas. Had there been no friction to procuring fully automatic weapons, it is likely the Vegas gunman would have used them. Why wouldn’t he?

If you want to read my argument for why I am pro-gun, see the end of this prior post.

It might be a good idea to pre-order my new book, Win Bigly, at this special page, because you get a bonus chapter by email. You’ll like it.

24 Questions Black People Need White People To Answer, Like Right Now

“Do y’all really think Miley is the one who created twerking? Really?”

This is just one of “24 Questions Black People Have For White People,” according to a new video released by Buzzfeed.

Five black people pose questions that open dialogue around white privilege, appropriation and more. Some other necessary questions they ask are: “Why is it that white crime is seen as an isolated incident but black crime is a representation of my entire community,” or “Why do you want to say the N-word so badly” and ”Why is it that white people always act as though they’ve discovered a new trend when people of color have been doing it for virtually years?”

White people often appropriate black culture without giving us credit — from slang words we created to the hairstyles we rock – and we want to know why!

See the rest of the questions in the video above.

5 Beauties Who Answer to Afropunk’s Rebellious Call

afropunk beauty

Tomorrow, Fort Greene’s Commodore Barry Park will host the eleventh annual Afropunk festival, a weekend-long celebration of alternative music, art, and the nonconformists who make it. Case in point, the iconoclastic lineup of performers who are as recognized for their sonic contributions as they are for their distinctive beauty choices, capturing the insurgent spirit of punk with an asymmetrical undercut, smattering of face paint, or unexpected dye job.

In the way of danceable beats and towering curls, there is Lion Babe’s Jillian Hervey, whose exaggerated golden mane is known to spill out glitter for emphasis as she twirls onstage. Contrary to her signature breathy songs, SZA, too, finds her voice in volume, with her fluffed-up texture arriving in an idiosyncratic shade of rust.

Surely, there will be no shortage of unexpected makeup preferences, care of Oshun’s Thandiwe, who along with bandmate Niambi Sala often daubs bright geometric patterns along her forehead, cheekbones, or eyes in shades of primary whites and yellows. Adia Victoria will likely balance the androgynous charm of her micro bangs and obsidian pixie with darkened eyebrows and a chromatic swipe of lipstick. And the bewitching allure of Kelela’s waist-grazing locks is rivaled only by her kohl-rimmed eyes. This weekend, take a cue from these five Afropunk beauties and cultivate a look that’s all your own.

Have You Seen Karl Lagerfeld? Fashion’s Answer to Where’s Waldo Is Here

wheres karl

It all started at Café de Flore. On a picturesque corner of the Boulevard Saint-Germain, the onetime postwar intellectuals’ hangout is constantly filled with designers and editors, trading Fashion Week gossip year-round. Three summers ago during the couture shows in Paris, Stacey Caldwell had popped by for a glass of champagne, when she spotted a familiar white powdered ponytail and fingerless black gloves—Karl Lagerfeld, of course, stopping to pick up his morning paper.

Caldwell, vice president of global wholesale at Thakoon, had made a game of spotting Lagerfeld on her frequent trips to Paris—Karl browsing the racks at Colette, for instance—but on that particular day, she paid more attention to the giddy fans approaching the Kaiser. “They would act like they were the only ones lucky enough to spot him, and then two minutes later someone else would do the exact same thing,” she says.

Expand

Photo: Courtesy of Penguin Random House

Conferring with her longtime friend Ajiri Aki, a fashion video producer based in Paris’s Eleventh Arrondissement, they decided to write a fashion-forward children’s book parody, starring the industry’s most iconic living figure. Where’s Karl?, out next month from Random House, follows a fictional blogger named Florence de la Sabine, or Fleur, as she chases Karl and the international fashion flock through fifteen cities in twelve months—from Chanel’s Grand Palais show in Paris to Art Basel Miami Beach, even on Christmas vacation to Tulum. “That tells you a lot about the psyche of the industry,” Aki says. “Everyone claims to be tired of it, but secretly, they love it.”

Each scene was drawn from thousands of reference photos that the two shared on Pinterest boards with illustrator Michelle Baron. There’s Thakoon and Lily Aldridge raiding the cash register in Karl’s Hong Kong pop-up, while Phoebe Philo and Riccardo Tisci pose next to Hello Kitty in Shibuya. In New York for the Met Gala, you’ll even find the Olsen twins wearing the exact vintage ballgowns they sported at last year’s Charles James–themed event.

“That’s the real fun—you think you’re looking for Karl,” Caldwell says, “but you’re recognizing all these fashion people along the way.”

Catalyst Wedding Magazine Is The Answer To Our Feminist Prayers

Liz Susong and Carly Romeo, founders of the new Catalyst Wedding Magazine, felt it was time the bridal industry had a “feminist disruption.” Their magazine, which launches later this month, aims to do just that.

Instead of just featuring the white, wealthy heterosexual couples that usually grace the pages of popular bridal publications, Catalyst celebrates the underrepresented: people of color, diverse bodies, same-sex couples and the many, many people who can’t spend anywhere close to $ 40,000 on a wedding.

“Carly and I see a need for a magazine that publishes real, authentic love celebrations and diverse love stories that doesn’t allow advertising revenue to drive its content,” Susong told The Huffington Post.

In March, Susong, a “progressive” wedding planner, and Romeo, a feminist wedding photographer, set up a Kickstarter page to raise funding for the project. They surpassed their original goal of $ 8,500, ultimately raising $ 13,490.

Susong explained to HuffPost that Catalyst considers itself feminist on three counts: representation, roles and rights.

“Part of our mission is to increase diverse representation in wedding media,” she said. “We want to see all sorts of couples and bodies being presented in full-color, beautiful print! The editorial content engages in critical dialogue around wedding traditions and the industry at large, especially around gendered roles in the wedding planning process.”

And while Susong says the publication is a “strong voice in favor of marriage equality,” she explained that Catalyst is not a gay wedding magazine.

“We’re not just looking for a new niche market to sell glitter to!” she said. “We’re celebrating authentic love and community — no strings attached.”

Some of the features in the first issue include “Let’s Ditch The Diet,” “What Makes A Rebellious Bride” and a personal essay titled “Here In Your Love” about planning a wedding while writing a Ph.D. dissertation. And then, of course, there are the beautiful real wedding photo spreads featuring couples not traditionally pictured in mainstream bridal print publications.

“It’s important to us that the magazine is in print because while some offbeat wedding resources exist online, we rarely get to see diverse bodies in beautiful, full-color print spreads,” Susong said. “Magazines provide a tactile experience, and all of the couples together in the magazine tell one story. We think that’s really special!”

Susong and Romeo say they are aiming to produce two volumes a year, with the second issue coming out in January 2016. So far, they have sold around 600 copies of the first issue — and counting.
