The Solution to Thinning Hair Has Arrived, Presented by NIOXIN

A Thinning Epidemic: Around half of all men describe their hair as “thin,” and studies show men tend to feel less hopeful than women about fixing the problem. Well, gents, you’re wrong about this one—thinning hair is absolutely treatable.

Your Hair Loss Isn’t Unique

We know what you’re thinking. Resistance is futile! My thinning hair is genetic. Or, my stress is causing it—it can’t be helped. Wrong again, on both counts.

Thinning Hair Can Hurt You

If you think thinning hair isn’t affecting your social life, you’re probably mistaken. Ninety-five percent of Americans notice thinning hair when meeting someone new, and 86% say it impacts their first impressions.

Stress Causes Hair Loss, Which Leads to More Stress

Almost 75% of Americans believe thinning hair takes an emotional toll. The effect is so stark that three in five say they’d do something drastic if it meant having thick hair. Fortunately, drastic measures aren’t necessary.

The It Shoe of Fall 2015 Has Arrived: Here’s Why We’re Head Over Heels for It

gucci fur loafers fall 2015

Fashion can’t get enough of Alessandro Michele’s new vision at Gucci, all magpie this and estate sale that. So it comes as no surprise that the chief item on Vogue.com’s shopping list was those fur-lined loafers: A grand total of five staffers had it down as a must-buy for fall. “I think every time Gucci goes through a reimagining, as it is now, I fall head over heels in love again with that horse bit and want whatever classic-with-a-twist version is next,” explains Vogue Creative Digital Director Sally Singer. “It’s just such a brilliant bourgeois signature—and these are both arch and fluffy.”

Part shaggy slipper, part preppy loafer, the shoe is not only a mash-up of styles but perhaps also a mash-up of memories. The school shoe silhouette itself harkens back to that first pair of loafers we all bought in our teens; the furry sole to a comfortable slide we’ve shuffled around in at home; the horse bit logo to images of Jackie O in the seventies, her Gucci bag casually slung over her shoulder.

So how to wear fall’s most coveted flat? Take cues from our editors and try it out with elevated basics. The eye-catching nature of the shoe means you don’t have to try too hard from the ankle up (though you might want to show it off with some cropped trousers, either of the flared or frayed variety). And it only makes sense to pair fall’s coziest loafer with equally cozy and chic silk pieces, such as a lace-trimmed slip or a loosely belted kimono wrap. Stepping into the new season doesn’t get much comfier—or cooler—than that.

It’s a Girl! The Royal Baby Has Arrived

Kate Middleton Royal Baby

So, she’s arrived: an 8-pound 3-ounce baby girl, born to Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge and Prince William at 8:34 a.m. London time, after a two-and-a-half-hour labor. Her name won’t be announced until the Queen has approved Catherine and William’s choice (it can take days), but tabloid and bookmakers’ favorite is Alice—though Elizabeth, Diana, and Victoria are in the running.

Meanwhile, the roiling Union Jack—draped crowds and hundreds of jostling media are encamped on the hallowed curbs outside the Lindo Wing of St Mary’s hospital in Paddington, awaiting the traditional (well, since Prince George arrived in 2013) pageant of Royal Baby rituals to unfold. First will be the Visitation of the Grandparents, to be expected today, with much attendant ado about what Carole Middleton will wear. (It was an Orla Keily print tea-dress last time, but it’s a chillier sunny day today.) Then the Going Home, possibly tomorrow, if the parents decide to stay overnight and do their baby-bonding in private, as they did with George. On the other hand, George now exists, so will they want to get home to Kensington Palace to introduce him to his sister? In that scenario, speculation is running that the appearance on the steps will happen around 6:00 p.m. tonight.

Whatever happens, Catherine has managed to perform yet another royal duty to her uncannily perfect standards. By producing a boy first, she ensured that the next-but-two heir to the British throne will be a King and not a Queen, which would have been more fun—and certainly an history-making first—since the law of the realm has recently been changed so that a first-born girl would inherit the Crown in the same way as an eldest boy. The newborn Princess of Cambridge (the title she definitely owns on birth) now stands fourth in line to the throne after her grandfather Prince Charles, father the Duke of Cambridge and brother Prince George. The reshuffling down the family pushes Princess Beatrice downthe list. Perhaps they’ll make it up to her by making her a godmother?

In any case, Kate’s coup has done the British nation another favor by taking the country’s mind off the interminable—and pretty dismal—party-political wrangling which seems to have been going on for at least as long as Kate was brought low with morning sickness. Yes, there is a United Kingdom general election next Thursday, May 7. That outcome is far from certain, since polls say that no party is popular enough to win outright. What’s definite, though: Few abroad will know or care. The news from these shores today and for the foreseeable future will be dominated by the baby who was born in Paddington this morning.

Your New Favorite Leather Jacket Has Arrived

The Arrivals

“I’ve always been a super—it sounds terrible, but—a super aesthetically inclined, or aesthetically driven person,” says Jeff Johnson, the creative director of the recently launched outerwear label The Arrivals, “always obsessing over either the way that things look or the way that things are put together.” And while that statement was issued in tones of regret, that’s not a bad thing for a man in his line of work; whether that was in his previous field (architecture, designing everything from “an airport or a museum to single family homes and furniture” for a Amsterdam-based firm) or his current one, creating a small clutch of innately covetable and entirely chic outerwear—think ribbed-sleeve cropped leather jackets with plush rabbit collars, oversize wool cocoon coats, durable twill parkas, and zippy, weatherproof Italian twill ponchos. As for whether Johnson truly thinks his discerning eye is doing him a disservice, consider the Vitruvius quote emblazoned across the Our Story section of The Arrivals’ website: “Nothing requires the architect’s care more than the due proportions of design.”

True to form, Johnson found the jump from creating buildings to creating sleek, androgynously minded toppers was not so much of a leap as one might think. (Though he did initially show up at a pattern-maker’s office with a series of blueprints and 3-D models for coats, rather than sketches.) “I was very lucky to find myself in an architecture practice that was so cross-disciplinary, that touched on so many different elements of design,” Johnson says, “It was such a nice place to realize the underlying principles of making good design better . . . it’s the very simple things that you’re taught: What is the starting function, what is the material that you’re going to work with, what is the silhouette, what is the construction going to take, what are the elements involved, what is the hardware like. Really, those elements transcend between any designing, it’s how we approach everything we do, whether that’s web design, the packaging, the product.”

And what of the product? The line contains both men and women’s collections mostly designed and manufactured in New York’s garment district and born of the desire for high-quality leather jackets without the $ 2,000-and-up price tag (as well as the related fiscal hangover). Johnson was approached with the idea for an e-commerce site late in 2013 by his friend and serial tech-investor Kal Vepuri, whose previous dalliances into the world of e-commerce include the riotously successful Warby Parker, Harry’s Shaving, and Reformation, among dozens of other businesses. Between Alexander Wang and Barney’s, H&M, and Zara, “where is that opportunity in the middle to buy a beautiful product with a story, made here in New York by like-minded young creatives who weren’t necessarily on paper the best people to do it, but are passionate and want to create a very impressive product?” asks Johnson. Well, they made one. Just by “focusing on what those classic items are that everyone wants in their closet, to let someone have that same feeling of putting on a leather jacket or that perfect oversize coat or parka or whatever it is and not feel terrible when you see the price tag.” And you won’t: The moto-style leather jacket rings in at $ 685, a warm wool wrapper, $ 385, with future collections held open for some currently-under-wraps ideas for expansion, both into lighter toppers for the warmer months and, possibly, accessories. The design aesthetic is very true to Johnson’s background: clean, Scandinavian-inspired lines that would look as good crossing one of Copenhagen’s canals as New York’s Canal Street—and as you might now have come to expect, you’ll want to live in them.
