Abboud, Daughter Turn Attention to Home Design

Designing luxury men’s wear has been a passion for Joseph Abboud for more than 30 years. And thanks to his daughter Ari, he’s now turned those skills to home design as well.
On her urging, the designer and his daughter collaborated to revamp a house in their New York hometown of Bedford. They bought a 1930s Tudor Revival home with a 19th-century carriage house and set out on a yearlong journey to renovate the house.
Although the designer had designed interiors for his own Bedford and Boston residences, this was Ari Abboud’s first foray into home design. The end result is a well-appointed interior that includes leather countertops, custom cabinets, exposed beams, vintage floorboards, cozy sectional couches, leather wing chairs and even custom-designed cashmere pillows. They partnered with Restoration Hardware on the interior.
The completion of the project found them on the cover of Bedford magazine’s March/April issue.
“This was my night job,” the designer said. “It was a labor of love and family and it was great to collaborate creatively [with my daughter.]”
The house, which is fully furnished, is on the market for $ 3.65 million.

Barack Obama Gave Trump A Letter With Advice, Cheeto Clearly Paid No Attention

Barack Obama gave Donald Trump plenty of advice in the Inauguration Day Letter he gave the newly elected President. It should come as no surprise that Cheeto clearly paid no heed to the sterling advice.

The letter has recently become public, and it reads like a perfect outline on how not to f*ck up your epic new gig as POTUS.

Obama offered this particularly poignant passage:

Third, we are just temporary occupants of this office. That makes us guardians of those democratic institutions and traditions — like rule of law, separation of powers, equal protection and civil liberties — that our forebears fought and bled for. Regardless of the push and pull of daily politics, it’s up to us to leave those instruments of our democracy at least as strong as we found them.

Considering Trump fired James Comey for daring to investigate possible Russian collusion in our election and that he pardoned the racist ex-Sheriff Arpaio, he must have missed that part of the letter.

Dear Mr. President –

Congratulations on a remarkable run. Millions have placed their hopes in you, and all of us, regardless of party, should hope for expanded prosperity and security during your tenure.

This is a unique office, without a clear blueprint for success, so I don’t know that any advice from me will be particularly helpful. Still, let me offer a few reflections from the past 8 years.

First, we’ve both been blessed, in different ways, with great good fortune. Not everyone is so lucky. It’s up to us to do everything we can (to) build more ladders of success for every child and family that’s willing to work hard.

Second, American leadership in this world really is indispensable. It’s up to us, through action and example, to sustain the international order that’s expanded steadily since the end of the Cold War, and upon which our own wealth and safety depend.

Third, we are just temporary occupants of this office. That makes us guardians of those democratic institutions and traditions — like rule of law, separation of powers, equal protection and civil liberties — that our forebears fought and bled for. Regardless of the push and pull of daily politics, it’s up to us to leave those instruments of our democracy at least as strong as we found them.

And finally, take time, in the rush of events and responsibilities, for friends and family. They’ll get you through the inevitable rough patches.

Michelle and I wish you and Melania the very best as you embark on this great adventure, and know that we stand ready to help in any ways which we can.

You’ve Probably Heard This Sex Advice Before — But Here’s Why You Should Pay Attention

Couples looking to spice up their sex lives often assume the effort involves some grand overhaul of intimacy and a venture into uncharted territory to have any real impact in the bedroom — not so, says Men Are From Mars, Women Are From Venus author John Gray. He’s been counseling couples for years in the art of communication and connection, and as he tells “Oprah: Where Are They Now — Extra,” the key to spicing up a sex life is actually a very familiar one.

“Romance spices up a sex life,” he says. And it doesn’t have to be complicated.

“Romance is when the man plans something in advance that’s out of the ordinary, and the woman anticipates that. She’s looking forward to that,” he continues. “It’s one-sided. It’s what he’s going to do for her.”

Gray suggests having a discussion with your partner a week in advance about what this planned event should be. The discussion, he adds, should be a true back-and-forth conversation, not a guessing game in which one person is unclear about what the other is looking for. 

“She’s going to inform him of three things that would really make her happy… His job is to provide that for her,” Gray says. “Then, when they actually do it, her job is to be happy while he provides that. That’s the dance of romance.”

The anticipation in this scenario is what’s truly effective. As the anticipation builds, so does the sense of romance, according to Gray. “At that time, oxytocin is being produced that lowers her stress and increases her romantic feelings,” he explains.

So, Gray continues, make sure that you don’t wait until the last minute when trying to do something “romantic.”

“Most married men wait until the weekend and say to their wives, ‘What would you like to do? I’ll do anything,'” Gray says. “That’s not romantic, and men don’t realize that.”

On that actual date, don’t forget to appreciate each other and resurface the initial spark that brought you together. “You know, when you were dating a guy, no matter what happened, you were happy just to be with him,” Gray says. “You’ve got to find that part of you and be happy no matter what, because he’s doing his best.”

This visible happiness is what helps one romantic gesture turn into a continual cycle of romance.

“When you’re happy with a man doing his best, next time he’ll do better,” Gray says. “That’s what motivates men. So that’s a secret of creating romance: plan in advance.”

You know Serena Williams as the 21 Grand Slam–winning tennis star, whose fierceness on the court is only rivaled by her kindness off it. But there’s another passion Williams has been quietly pursuing for years: fashion design. Williams is no ordinary celebrity-turned-designer. Consider her boundary-pushing court style, her two years of fashion school, and her experience designing her own collections at HSN and Nike. It was with HSN that she presented a Spring 2016 collection at New York Fashion Week earlier today, to an audience including Anna Wintour, Gigi Hadid, Lily Aldridge, and her rumored paramour, Drake.

“I’ve always loved fashion. I was always that girl that played with my dolls, and I went to fashion school, so it’s not just made up for me. It’s actually something that I really enjoy and that I have a lot of fun with,” Williams told backstage before her show. Though she’s shown her HSN collection at Fashion Week once before, her latest collection bears her influence to a greater extent. Not only did she work closely with Guillaume Poupart, chief merchandising officer of Tiger J LLC, on each item, but she also sketched and designed the finale dress, a backless black number trimmed in fringe. “I love seeing something on paper and then seeing it in real life,” she said, motioning toward the piece. “Each time, even when I do it with Nike, I still get chills.”

Williams called the collection “a little bit retro, romantic, and extremely innovative.” The fringed suede jackets and dresses are decidedly more posh than your typical HSN fare, and the shearling pieces are expected to retail at a luxury price point. “I want [my customers] to feel empowered. I want them to feel beautiful. The collection works on every size person. You should [be able] to look good and feel good and love who you are and, at the same time, be stylish. We want our ladies to be stylish, too,” she smiled.

These Are The Exact Debate Moments When Candidates Got The Most Attention On Google

During Thursday night’s primary debate of the top 10 Republican candidates, Google tracked searches for each person on the stage. Not surprisingly, businessman Donald Trump was the most-searched candidate, followed by neurosurgeon Ben Carson, Sen. Ted Cruz (Texas), former Florida Gov. Jeb Bush and Sen. Marco Rubio (Fla.).

Searches for each candidate ebbed and flowed throughout the debate, generally increasing when the candidate was speaking. Now, thanks to Google, we know what the candidates were saying when the greatest number of people were searching their names. 

Searches for Trump had several major spikes, four of which corresponded to specific statements he made. The largest jump occurred during his closing statement — most candidates saw an increase in searches during their final remarks — and during his response to moderator Chris Wallace’s question about his past business bankruptcies. Trump claimed he had never gone bankrupt, then clarified that he had “taken advantage of the [bankruptcy] laws of this country” in four business deals in the past. Perhaps viewers were fact-checking him.

Carson’s largest spike seems to have come when he stated that “there is no such thing as a politically correct war.” He was briefly interrupted by applause from the crowd at Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena before he continued, praising the intellect of military leaders and saying they could carry out any mission a commander in chief gives them “if we don’t tie their hands behind their back.”

Cruz’s most-Googled moment was during his opening statement. He was the third-most searched candidate, but didn’t have as many ups and downs as the other top-searched candidates. His immigration and foreign policy comments got some attention, but not as much as his opening remarks.

Bush, on the other hand, saw several spikes in Google searches — some not necessarily related to anything he said. The first occurred when he attempted to make his habit of vetoing budget line items as governor of Florida into a Godfather joke. Another was when he referred to the Iraq invasion, led by his brother then-President George W. Bush in 2003, as a mistake. And later, Bush denied a report that he had called Trump a “clown” and a “buffoon,” but did grab attention by saying Trump’s language is divisive. 

Rounding out the top five in Google search traffic, Rubio first caught attention defending his relative youth and inexperience by saying the election “cannot be a resume competition.” If it is, he warned, “Hillary Clinton’s gonna be the next president.” Rubio also gained attention for his statements on immigration and education, but his largest spike was when he called for lowering the tax rate for all small businesses to 25 percent, limiting regulations and repealing Obamacare all in one breath.

You Want Attention? Talk About Me, Not You

I don’t mean to literally talk about me, Tucker Max, that would be a terrible way to get attention.

I am talking about “me” in the plural sense, as the customer or reader or client. Lemme explain. Every single day of my life, someone asks me this question:

“How do I get people to pay attention to my writing? What’s your trick?”

So I’ll ask them who their writing is for, and this is what they say:

“Me, me, me, me, me, me! MEEEE!! EVERYONE LOOK AT ME!!”

OK, I’m exaggerating. They usually don’t scream, but the answer is always about themselves, never about their audience. They tell me what their book or blog post or writing means to them. Most people write only with themselves in mind, and not with an audience in mind.

And that’s precisely the reason why no ones care about their writing.

It’s really funny that Tucker Max is telling you this, isn’t it? To not focus on yourself? Because you’re probably thinking, “Didn’t you sell millions of books that were just talking about yourself?”

Actually, no.

My books are the perfect example of the right way to do this. Even if you’re a huge fan and read all my books cover to cover, you still don’t know very much about me at all. My books are funny stories about stupid things I did, and they are designed to entertain the reader. There is almost nothing in there that is actually about me, or written for me. It’s all written for the reader – which is why it sells so well, and that is key lesson here. If you’re trying to get attention for your writing – or actually, ANY product or idea at all – please listen to this fact:

No one cares about your writing. They only care about what your writing does for them.

This is the best advice you can get for trying to get anyone to do anything – read your writing, buy your product, go to your bar, anything. My area of expertise is writing and books and publishing, but this applies to everything. See, watch it work:

No one cares about your product, they only care about what your product does for them.

And of course, services:

No one cares about your service, they only care about what your service does for them.

Watch it work in all sales:

No one cares about what you’re selling, they only care about what it does for them.

It even works in broad categories, like ideas:

No one cares about your idea, they only care about what your idea means to them.

I bet you understand already. We’re all sophisticated buyers of products and services, and this is how we buy things for ourselves  - - by calculating if the product or service will provide a value to us.

Yet, when the roles are reversed and people start trying to get attention for their product or service, they lose their damn minds, and somehow think that everyone has to pay attention to them just because they want them to. It’s like as a society we have decided to be perfectly rational buyers, and totally irrational sellers.

But at least with a product or a service, people ultimately understand that they’re making something for someone else. So unless they are blinded by the self-proclaimed brilliance of their idea/product, they eventually get that it has to appeal to the buyer. With books or blog posts or writing, people really lose their minds, because people think of a their writing in a totally different way.

Most people see their writing as a piece of themselves, as a representation of their identity, or some sort of personal validation. They think that getting attention for their writing will confirm and validate their idea, and thus themselves. I have seen this over and over and over.

I would say less than 10 percent of the writing I see is actually about delivering value to an audience; the rest is ultimately about the writer, not the audience. You’re probably making this mistake too, without even realizing it.

This is literally what we deal with everyday in our publishing company. When we started our company, we thought the most important service we provided to authors was saving them time (our process only takes authors about 12 hours). That time saving is great, but the real value we provide to authors comes from helping them see exactly what wisdom they have that’s interesting to other people  —  which is the only way to get attention for your book.

We charge a decent sized fee for our services, but I’ll explain to you exactly what we do to get authors to understand this, because if you write anything for anyone  —  a book, blog, newsletter  —  this is process will make your writing better.

There’s three basic steps that will ensure you get attention for your book or blog post (and yes, this works almost the exact same way for anything):

-What is your goal for this book/blog post/piece of writing (or product or service or idea)?

-What audience do you need to reach in order to accomplish that goal?

-What wisdom, information or value can you deliver to that audience that will help them reach their goals?

Do you see what that process does? It centers the entire discussion on the audience, not on yourself. Why does this matter? Because no one cares about your writing, they care about what your writing does for them.

I’ll give you a specific example of how we took an author through this process, how it turned his book from a dud into something that got a ton of attention, and it will show you how to do this with your writing (or product):

This entrepreneur wanted to write a book about how he built a large commercial plumbing contracting business, in order to drive clients to his business and raise his profile in the plumbing industry. He was very proud of his company and wanted more people to know about it (and I think he secretly had visions of this book elevating him alongside famous business people like Jack Welch and Sheryl Sandberg). There was a small problem:

No one on earth wants to read a self-congratulatory book about plumbing (I won’t make the obvious poop joke here).

We walked him through our exercise, and he realized that the audience he needed to hit in order to reach his goal (people who buy commercial plumbing services or care about the plumbing industry) were never going to read his book  —  unless he said something of interest to them.

So we asked him a bunch of questions about plumbing, the problems in the business, his experiences, and realized something: He had an incredible way of evaluating and speccing out commercial jobs that was genuinely revolutionary (at least as far as you can revolutionize plumbing). And guess what? That information would be incredibly valuable to the exact audience he needed to hit: people who buy commercial plumbing services.

So that’s what his book became  —  the definitive guide on how to evaluate and spec out commercial plumbing jobs. Which will NOT put him next to the titans of business, but it WILL get him in front of exactly the people he wants, in exactly the way he wants it.

And it’s happening only because he used his wisdom to help his audience reach their goals.

See how this works? This is the key to getting attention for any writing  –  books, blog posts, even tweets  —  first make your writing about the other person, help them reach their goals, and that will inspire them to both engage your writing and then share it with others. That’s the only writing that anyone cares about reading  –  the writing that helps them.

You decide what to read based on the same calculus, right  —  what is potentially useful to you? So why do you think anyone will read your writing based on what it means to you? They won’t. Write with your audience in mind, and then getting attention is easy. And if you do that, then they will engage your writing (or product or idea), and that is how you reach your goal.

As my friend Justine Musk says, “The question isn’t how the world can cater to your passions, but how your passions can cater to the world.”

‘Blood Mirror’ Art Installation Draws Attention To FDA Gay Blood Ban

One artist is making a bold statement about the anti-gay stigma still prevalent in the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) policy regarding blood donation.

Jordan Eagles assembled a group of nine queer men with a diverse array of stories to take part in his project “Blood Mirror.” Eagles used the blood these men donated to construct an art installation that sends a powerful message about the lives that could have been saved if the FDA’s policy on blood donation from men who have sex with men (MSM) were different.

A press release sent to The Huffington Post notes:

The men who donated their blood to this project include: An 88-year-old openly gay priest; A Nigerian gay rights activist on political asylum in the U.S.; A Co-Founder of Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC); The CEO of GMHC; An identical gay twin whose straight brother is eligible to donate; A captain in the Army who served two terms in Iraq and was discharged under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” (reinstated to service in 2014); A married transgender male couple, and; A bisexual father of two. Dr. Howard Grossman, former director of the American Academy of HIV Medicine, was the medical supervisor on the project, as well as a blood donor. Each man is currently ineligible to donate blood under the FDA’s current policy—but since they cannot donate their blood to save lives, they’ve chosen to donate their blood for art.

Last year the FDA proposed altering its full ban on blood donation from MSM individuals to one that only requires men to have not engaged in sex with other men for 12 months prior to their donation. This change is slated to go into effect in July 2015, but still angers many who say that the entire ban should be lifted.

Activist and filmmaker Leo Herrera documented the story behind “Blood Mirror” in conjunction with World Blood Donor Day on June 14.

“I wanted to create a sculpture that would become a time capsule, documenting this moment in time, while showing that this blood could have been used to save lives,” Eagles said in a statement sent to The Huffington Post. “This discriminatory policy is part of our gay history and part of our nation’s history, and the sculpture asks us to reflect on discrimination in our country, as well as the homophobia that exists around the world. Teacher Who Had Sexual Relationship With 15-Year-Old Claims Marriage Left Her Craving Attention

What could lead a 27-year-old married teacher with a young son to have a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student? Jennifer Caswell, known as Jennifer Sexton before her recent divorce, speaks out for the first time since the former middle school teacher from Hollis, Oklahoma, was charged with three counts of second-degree rape.

Caswell, who taught sixth, seventh and eighth grade, recalls when the student/teacher relationship became inappropriate. “He was flirty. I should have put a stop to it then, and I didn’t,” she says. “I wasn’t used to getting attention. It felt nice to have someone to compliment me and things like that, because I felt very unwanted.”

She tells Dr. Phil that she felt vulnerable during her seven-year marriage. “I never got complimented. Never even got a birthday present, Christmas present, for Valentine’s Day, nothing. I felt really bad about myself,” she says, fighting tears. “I never thought I’d be in this situation. I’m not a monster and I’m not a predator. I made a stupid decision.”

Dr. Phil asks, “Would you say the marriage was not a good marriage?”

Caswell explains, “We didn’t fight, but that’s only because we didn’t talk. It was like living with a roommate … He would come home. He would talk on the phone to his friends for an hour or two, and then he would go to the playroom and play his Xbox until 1 or 2 in the morning.”

Dr. Phil probes, “Was he affectionate with you physically?”

“No, we never held hands or cuddled on the couch or anything like that,” Caswell says. “I wanted that. I mean, I need that and I wasn’t getting it there.”

She claims her former student reacted to her quite differently. “He would always tell me how beautiful I was and how I was a good person on the inside,” says Caswell about the teen, whom she describes as “funny” and “mature.”

Hollywood Is Finally Paying Attention to Female Moviegoers

Summer blockbuster season hasn’t always been the best time for a female moviegoer. Take a look at 2014’s offerings: Transformers: Age of Ultron, Godzilla, X-Men: Days of Future Past, Captain America: The Winter Soldier—not much variation outside of the comic-book canon. Typically, summer films cater to adolescent male viewers because, by and large, they go to more movies.

This year, however, that trend will be broken. So far the biggest box office hits of 2015—Fifty Shades of Grey, Cinderella, and Insurgent—have proved that women will come to theaters in droves, too, if you appeal to their tastes.

And while the upcoming slate of summer movies still contains the usual mix of comic book heroes (Avengers: Age of Ultron, Ant-Man) and special effects bonanzas (Terminator Genisys), we’re predicting this recent female-driven box-office trend will continue all the way through Labor Day weekend. Here, five movies we’re sure will be massive hits come summer.


Tomorrowland, May 22
Young teenage heroines set against a dystopian backdrop (The Hunger Games, Insurgent) have proven to be box-office gold. In the upcoming sci-fi adventure film Tomorrowland, Britt Robertson travels to the titular setting and discovers she’s the only one who can save Earth from its eventual doom. The fact that George Clooney plays a genius inventor is sure to attract plenty of older female viewers as well.


Inside Out, June 19
It’s been awhile since we’ve been as excited about an animated film as we are about Pixar’s Inside Out. Comediennes Amy Poehler and Mindy Kaling lend their voices to this movie about a young girl’s inner feelings and are perfectly cast as Joy and Disgust, respectively.


Magic Mike XXL, July 1
If Fifty Shades of Grey taught us anything, it’s that sex sells. So it’s really no surprise that Magic Mike and his band of Tampa Bay strippers are back just in time to celebrate Independence Day weekend.


Trainwreck, July 17
After Bridesmaids’ massive success in 2011, some studios were clued into the fact that women love a good, raunchy comedy, too. Amy Schumer’s upcoming Trainwreck promises plenty of laughs and a leading lady behaving badly. If anyone can revive the stale rom-com genre, it’s her.


Paper Towns, July 24
If comic book movies are kryptonite for teenage boys, the same could be said for John Green film adaptations and teenage girls. From the same author who wrote the blockbuster The Fault in Our Stars comes another coming-of-age romance, Paper Towns. It’s sure to become the go-to movie for anyone who loves a good cry.

Attention All Smart, Cheap Bastards!

Starting Note: The other day I mentioned there are some ideas that, by their nature, can't be communicated. Today's post will be a good example of an exception that proves the rule. In today's post I will embrace a risk of embarrassment that folks with a normal sense of shame would avoid. By the end of this post, three-quarters of you will have a new reason to dislike me. But I didn't know a better way to convey some potentially useful information. Luckily, I lost my sense of shame years ago. So here you go. The embarrassing parts are at the end.

I know my readers. You're smart and you see no reason to buy a hardcover book that will be less expensive in a year when the paperback is released. After all, it's not as if you will run out of books to read between now and then. (That's almost exactly what many of you told me.)

You were also cautious about a book from me on a topic that is way out of my normal strike zone. That caution was smart too.

And when you heard that the book included one chapter each on diet and fitness, you probably wondered what I could possibly add to that conversation. So you took a wait-and-see attitude. That was exactly the right play. I would have done the same.

    presently the people who come to my mind who could use it the most are middle-aged.

    Wish I had read something like it fifty years ago. It could have given me a much better road map

    One of my favorites for this year

    This might be one of the strangest, yet at the same time most helpful, books that I have ever read.

    To me, the great achievement of "How to Fail at Almost Everything" is the sly and gradual undermining
    of traditional view of "success".

    Some books have a great impact. This one came at the right time for me.

    This book changed my life, my diet, and inspired me to hack my routine even more!

    I'm definitely re-reading the book. I have already put some of his theories … to the test and
    am happy with the results so far.

I have one more piece of unfinished business, and this comes with personal risk. In my view – and I hope you agree – any authors talking about diet and fitness should show their work. And so I will show mine. Here is a selfie of me at age 57, taken the other day. I cropped off my head because that's the ugly part.

I got this way gradually, over about ten years, by replacing willpower (which always failed) with knowledge. Now I eat everything I want whenever I want. I lost 28 pounds over time by eliminating my cravings in a simple, systematic way. The reason I can eat anything I want is that I no longer crave bad food. And healthy food is self-regulating in the sense that you rarely eat too much broccoli even if you like it.

None of this gain was possible even five years ago because science had so many things wrong about diet. I did what science told me to do twenty years ago and I slowly gained from about 135 pounds to 168 lbs. Once science started to get things right (I assume), I once again followed their lead and my body transformed back to about 140 pounds but with higher muscle content. I never looked remotely like this at a younger age. And it was effortless in the sense that I didn't suffer and I didn't need any real willpower.

I work out, obviously. But I never overdo it, which is an important part of my system as explained in the book. I do thirty minutes of light weights and thirty minutes of light cardio at most. I attempt to exercise daily and succeed about six days a week. Sometimes the exercise is just a long walk. I mix it up. I've never had a personal trainer.

In the old days I had to muster a lot of willpower to exercise. But thanks to my knowledge about the science of habits, I trained myself like Pavlov's dogs to look forward to it. I only exercise enough to feel good. Then I reward myself with a tasty protein shake and some downtime. If you don't look forward to exercise, you might be interested in how to rewire yourself in a similar fashion over time. It isn't much harder than hearing some new things for the first time. The change happens almost on its own.

Just to be crystal clear, I have no reason to believe my system will work for you. We're all different, and that's why I don't believe in generic broadcasting of "advice." But I guarantee my approach is different from what you have been exposed to. If what you are doing isn't working, you might want to include my system on your short list of what to try next.

Back to my original point about information that can't be communicated – I didn't think I could make a credible point about diet and exercise systems without showing my work. And doing so in this context is uber-douche-baggy and lives forever on the Internet. I'll take that hit because the people who have read my book think it's worth sharing and I agree. I'm comfortable with how the photo looks but I realize many will judge me for showing it. The Internet is unkind to old guys without shirts. Whatever.
