Australian Cult Brand Spell & The Gypsy Collective Lands in U.S.

Australian fashion labels, many of which are in the spotlight as Meghan Markle, Duchess of Sussex, tours the antipodes, have long been popular in Southern California, where the climate and beach culture mirror the land of Oz.
Spell & The Gypsy Collective, the 10-year-old contemporary brand started by sisters Isabella Pennefather and Elizabeth Abegg, opened its first stand-alone retail space in the U.S., a pop-up at 1108 Abbot Kinney Boulevard in Venice, Calif. Open through Nov. 25, the shop has attracted cult lovers of the brand, some of whom traveled from as far away as Florida and Canada just to shop.

“Because we’re slow fashion, we don’t make too many pieces so they tend to sell out very quickly,” said Pennefather, who started out in 2008 making jewelry that she sold at the open-air market in Byron Bay, Australia. When her sister, Lizzy, came on board a few years later, they expanded into clothing and e-commerce, and the business grew from there.

Australian Designers to Show in Paris

AUSSIES TAKE TO PARIS AND NEW YORK: After four seasons showing off-schedule in Paris, 31-year-old Perth designer Kym Ellery is moving up to the major leagues. On Oct. 6 at 9.30 a.m. at a to-be-confirmed Paris venue, Ellery will show her spring 2016 collection as part of the Chambre Syndicale’s official schedule for the first time.
Known for her voluminous tailoring and signature oversize bell sleeves and bell-bottom flares, the designer looked for inspiration this season to the 1969 Wrapped Coast project by French environmental sculptors Christo and Jeanne-Claude, which saw 1.5 miles of Sydney’s coastline wrapped in one million square feet of fabric and rope. Ellery’s collection riffs on the draping and wrapping of the body via drawstrings and metal eyelets, many iterations of the cotton shirt and prints inspired by Australian flora and marine coral.
“It feels a little surreal, but also like I’ve been given the green light to just go hard,” Ellery said of being on the official Paris schedule.
Ellery forms part of an expanded Oz presence in Paris this season. Taking a leaf out of the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund’s Americans in Paris book, the Australian Fashion Chamber will stage a 3,767-square-foot Australian Designers Abroad showroom at No.

Australian Couple Says They’ll Get Divorced If Same-Sex Marriage Is Legalized

A Christian couple in Australia has vowed to get divorced if marriage equality becomes legal.

In an op-ed for the Canberra CityNews, Nick Jensen wrote that he and his wife, Sarah, would, “as a matter of conscience, refuse to recognize the government’s regulation of marriage if its definition includes the solemnization of same sex couples.”

“Marriage is the union of a man and a woman before a community in the sight of God. And the marriage of any couple is important to God regardless of whether that couple recognizes God’s involvement or authority in it,” Jensen wrote.

Jensen and his wife have been married for 10 years and have children together. But according to him, the Australian government would essentially be nullifying their marriage contract if it chooses to legalize same-sex marriage.

“For us, fundamentally, when we got married we signed a contract with the state and that contract was around the current definition of marriage and all the things that comes with it. Man and woman for life, for the sake of children,” Jensen told Buzzfeed News. “If it came to be that the definition of the contract was changed, the contract is now null and void.”

The op-ed has triggered a wave of backlash on social media, as people accused both the writer and CityNews of homophobia.

But Jensen, who works for the Australian Christian Lobby’s Lachlan Macquarie Internship, insists that his position does not stem from bigotry.

“This has been a big decision for my wife and I. Some will accuse of us being bigoted or too hateful to share. But this couldn’t be further from our intentions,” he wrote in his op-ed. “The truth is, ‘marriage’ is simply too important. It is a sacred institution, ordained by God … Any attempt to change the definition of marriage by law is not something in which we are able to partake.”

The magazine has defended its decision to print the op-ed piece. Editor Ian Meikle told News.com.au that “the article does not reflect the opinion of the paper,” but does offer “an interesting angle” to the debate about same-sex marriage legalization.

The Australian parliament is set to vote on marriage equality legislation by year’s end. According to a recent Guardian Australia survey, politicians remain divided on the issue.

Australian Fashion Chamber Celebrates One-Year Birthday

BIRTHDAY BASH: Two hundred people feted the Australian Fashion Chamber‘s first birthday on Monday night on the rooftop of the AMP Building overlooking Sydney’s Circular Quay. They also enjoyed a bird’s eye view of UK design studio Universal Everything’s spectacular light show takeover of the sails of the Sydney Opera House, part of the Vivid Sydney 2015 light and music festival.
Joining Vogue Australia editor-in-chief and AFC chair Edwina McCann and her deputy chair and editor-in-chief of Harpers Bazaar Australia, Kellie Hush, were a number of the fledgling industry advocacy body’s 42-strong designer membership. They included Dion Lee, Christopher Esber, Camilla and Marc Freeman, Bianca Spender, Rachel and Alex Sims and Beth and Tessa Macgraw.
Launched in March 2014, the organization has facilitated mentorships and staged seminars to promote Australia’s embattled 12 billion Australian dollar ($ 8.6 billion) fashion retail sector.
During the Fall 2015 show season in March, two international receptions were also organized in New York and at the Australian Embassy in Paris, the latter an installation featuring the work of six designers called Australian Designers Abroad.
The plan, said McCann, is to stage two Designers Abroad in Paris each March and October and a resort showroom in New York each June in

Stoner’s To-Do List Tweeted By Australian Police

Pot smokers are DANGEROUS.

Just look at this depraved soul’s to-do list, which cops in Australia tweeted out Wednesday, sarcastically asking “Are ur Saturdays hectic like this?” Police in Murdoch found it while raiding the weed fiend’s home.

You see that, readers? This miscreant was going to have chips AND gravy on Saturday before going to K-Mart. Everybody knows that shopping after a meal can cause an upset stomach, fatigue and MAYHEM.

But in all seriousness, it appears that the Murdoch Police — and their followers on Twitter — got a kick out of the agenda, which they found while searching a home during a burglary investigation.

Police wouldn’t say whether there were any arrests, or if they found any evidence of burglary, according to WA Today.

But they found the 10-item list, which ended with a plan to “Get a stick, chop up and get stoned.” Getting a stick, according to WA Today, is a slang term Down Under for picking up a bit of weed wrapped in aluminum foil.

The tweet certainly got a response from Australians, at least 85 percent of whom believe marijuana should be legalized, according to the Daily Mail.

5 Reasons That Cool, Under-the-Radar Australian Label Ellery Is Poised for a Major Breakout

Ellery pre-fall 2015

Flamboyant, fluted tailoring clocked up significant street-style mileage during the fall 2015 shows. Remember the bold, seventies-inspired blouse sported by supermodel Abbey Lee in Paris—or the exaggerated flares worn by Natalie Joos in New York City? This distinctive new retro-modern silhouette comes courtesy of designer Kym Ellery, whose eponymous, Sydney-based label is quietly transitioning from under-the-radar treasure to global go-to. Comprised of architectural tailoring and fluid separates, her collections are easy, cool, and unconventionally luxurious. In the midst of Australian Fashion Week, we catch up with the 31-year-old talent and chart the five reasons why you should bookmark the brand now.

1. The Founder
Prior to launching her own line in 2007, Kym Ellery worked on the fashion team at the Aussie fashion magazine Russh. “My background in styling has definitely influenced how I’ve evolved the label,” she says. “From speaking the same language as editors, to knowing that there was a real need for a modern, entry-level label that young women could turn to.” Then there’s Ellery’s own signature style, itself the subject of much adoration, which she describes as, “classic, understated, predominantly androgynous, and almost always monochromatic.”

2. The All-Star Ambassadors
In addition to supermodels and fashion insiders, the brand has amassed a cool following of A-list screen sirens and pop icons such as Rihanna, Solange Knowles, Cate Blanchett, and Elle Fanning. “I feel incredibly lucky, because they are all such strong, beautiful women and they’ve discovered the label organically,” says the designer, adding, “I’d love to see Diane Kruger in one of our dresses, or perhaps Tilda Swinton in a suit. That would be a dream.”

3. The Look
Ellery’s seventies-inspired tailoring strikes a careful balance between restraint and romance. “We’ve become known for reinventing vintage silhouettes, like our classic flared pant which has become a staple,” she says. “I’m an absolute perfectionist about the right cut. Everything is crafted locally here in Sydney so I can keep a close eye on quality. I’m also fastidious about fabrics and work with mills in Switzerland and Italy to develop innovative new textures.”

Expand

4. The New Collection
Ellery’s pre-fall line, available at Dover Street Market New York starting next month, pays homage to David Bowie, whom the designer credits as her ultimate muse. “This season, I was especially inspired by his style during the Thin White Duke era—the gray fluted suits—and also the Ziggy Stardust chapter, which is where all the gold brocade comes into play,” she says. Other high notes in the new offerings include a lightweight chrome coat, draped sleeveless paisley top, and slouchy sleeveless waistcoats.

5. The International Takeover
Besides retaining the headline slot at Australia Fashion Week, Ellery will make its official, on-schedule debut in Paris next season. “Showing on the main schedule in Paris has always been my ultimate goal, so we’re all extremely excited about this year and what the future might hold,” she says. We’re certainly staying tuned.

Australian Family Rescues Abandoned Baby Magpie, Now Has The Coolest Pet Ever

In late 2013, 10-year-old Noah Bloom found a deserted magpie chick in a New South Wales suburb. After taking her home and giving her a towel as a bed, the Blooms called a veterinarian friend of the family for advice. They could hand the bird over to an authority, but, being young and abandoned by other magpies, they were told she’d probably be put down. So the Blooms bought some baby bird feed, gave her a name — “Penguin” — and raised her themselves.

Oh, and they set up an Instagram account, which has so far attracted over 27,000 followers.

A photo posted by Penguin Bloom (@penguinthemagpie) on

Since then, Penguin has become like family to husband-and-wife Cameron and Sam Bloom, along with their sons Reuben, Noah and Oli. They set her outside at night to sleep on a branch or in the eaves, but say that she’s good at sneaking back into the house through an open door or window. Cameron Bloom told The Huffington Post she’ll often curl into bed with one of the kids, or sleep below a painting of herself that Sam had created.

Seriously need my own headphones.

A photo posted by Penguin Bloom (@penguinthemagpie) on

Magpies have been known to make unusual friends — which is good for Penguin since most of the wild magpies around the Blooms’ house like to bully and peck at her. She’s not a pushover, though. While Penguin gets along well with the Blooms and their young sons’ friends, certain guests might be greeted with a threatening peck. But Penguin the magpie is probably the world’s least terrifying guard dog bird.

The birds are also remarkably good at mimicking sounds around them — YouTube has plenty of examples. Penguin has learned to copy some meowing noises the Bloom boys make at her, as a game.

A photo posted by Penguin Bloom (@penguinthemagpie) on

She’s talented, too, at maneuvering around the house. Cameron, a professional photographer, has snapped many pictures of her just chilling out on someone’s foot or head.

“What she does is she’ll hop,” Cameron told HuffPost. “She’ll hop up the chair, then the table, until she’s sitting on your head. It’s sort of a progression.”

See below for more photos of Penguin — whose name was given by Noah, thinking, of course, that she looked kind of like a penguin.
