Balenciaga Sued by Little Trees Air Fresheners Co. for Jacking Idea

Balenciaga’s dive into the key rings business reeks of a total rip-off … so claims the company behind Little Trees air fresheners, which is suing the luxury brand for straight-up jacking its product. Car-Freshner Corporation — which owns the rights to…

Mytheresa.com, Balenciaga Team on Fashion Film

BALENCIAGA ACT: Mytheresa.com has teamed with Balenciaga to poke fun at the glamour, exaggeration — and irony — endemic in the industry with a short film to be released on Sunday.
“Une Incroyable Excuse,” is a two-minute short featuring three young French Ladies Who Lunch, and the shocking discovery one of them makes when she opens her handbag to look for her car keys. The short, written and directed by Danny Sangra and filmed on location at Caviar Kaspia in Paris, is the e-tailer’s first fashion film project. The film makes its debut on Showstudio.com on Sunday, and will be posted later in the week on the Mytheresa.com Web site.
The three main characters wear exclusive looks from the Balenciaga fall runway collection, which are available to buy on Mytheresa.com.
Justin O’Shea, the site’s buying director, said one of his favorite movie lines is “Why so serious?” spoken by Heath Ledger’s Joker character in “The Dark Knight,” and he wanted to create something with a sense of humor. “The line has probably never been referenced in a fashion quote,” said O’Shea.
He added: “The idea of this industry being fun is something I feel strongly about, and that was the starting point behind the

Demna Gvasalia Is In at Balenciaga: Looking at Vetements’s Street Style Cred

vetements street style

Vetements may have made its debut just a handful of seasons ago, but from the brand’s fast-found street style success, you’d never guess it. While boldface fans like Rihanna and Kanye West have slipped into hoodies from this shadowy collective helmed by Margiela alum Demna Gvasalia, there’s plenty of appeal to be had for those of us not dogged by the paps 24/7. Look at the Spring shows, where the label’s generously sized bombers, blazers, sweatshirts, shoes, and, yes, That Floral Dress have become the stuff of ubiquity.

The expected announcement of Gvasalia’s installment at storied Balenciaga may come as something of a surprise, but Vetements’s got a leg up thanks to its legions of street style fans. Click through the slideshow above to see them in action.

Balenciaga RTW Spring 2016

No choked-back tears; no drama. Backstage after Alexander Wang’s last show for Balenciaga, everyone seemed happy. (Wang had just chronicled his final runway-sprint bow for the house via selfie). François-Henri Pinault and Salma Hayek offered him smiling congratulations; he in turn thanked Pinault profusely and said, “I feel like I’ve graduated; it’s the last day of school.”

At first thought, odd phrasing; Balenciaga rings more pinnacle than proving ground. But then, what better way for a still-young designer to broaden his range, deepen his skill set and learn, than by clocking three years at a place with the resources and institutional creative rigor of the storied house.

The collection with which Wang closed his Balenciaga chapter gave evidence of such; it was the most ornate and decorative of his career — but decorative his way. It was about lingerie dressing in a single color, off-white, for cottons, silks and linens, but with an undone countenance and a street attitude, for the girl edgy enough (whose feet are calloused enough) to wear little-nothing lace bedroom slippers on urban streets.

The girliness, the sensuality, the intricately wrought delivery of boudoir-chic tropes were different for Wang, but he made them his own. Since his arrival at

The 10 Best Looks from Alexander Wang’s Last Collection for Balenciaga (Plus, Zoe Kravitz on the Runway)

The moment has come. Earlier this evening Alexander Wang took his last bow at Balenciaga as the house's creative director. Wang's final show was one of the most anticipated collections of the Paris Fashion Week…

Bridget Foley’s Diary: At Balenciaga, the Who’s Next Watch Begins

Designer departs from storied house. Hasn’t Kering been there and done that recently, when it replaced Gucci’s Frida Giannini with Alessandro Michele? Yet here we go again, with Alexander Wang leaving Balenciaga after what seems like a truncated stay, despite completion of his three-year contract.
Whatever the reasons behind the split, it’s safe to assume that if both sides had been delighted with the relationship, they’d have found a way to continue on despite Wang’s understandable interest in building his own brand and seeking the revenue with which to do so. (WWD reported this week that he’s close to signing a deal with General Atlantic, the growth equity firm headed by William Ford.)
Wang is now on to the rest of his life and career, an extremely talented and still-young designer. He got a bit of a raw deal from the moment the ink was dry on his Balenciaga contract, not from Kering but from the legions of onlookers who opined about the gravitas of the house codes and whether a guy with a youth-oriented, street-centric aesthetic could rise to the occasion. Suddenly, Wang wasn’t a gifted, savvy designer who’d launched his brand within a strata that made sense for his audience,

Balenciaga Confirms Alexander Wang’s Departure

PARIS – Balenciaga on Friday said it was parting ways with Alexander Wang, confirming a report in WWD on July 29.
“Balenciaga and Alexander Wang today announce their joint decision not to renew their contract beyond its initial term,” the French fashion house said in a statement. It added that the spring 2016 Balenciaga show on Oct. 2, during Paris Fashion Week, will be Wang’s last and a new creative director will be announced “in due course.”
The statement did not detail the precise reasons for the separation, but Wang suggested he wanted to focus on his eponymous brand, based in New York.

“It’s been an incredible experience to work with a couture house in Paris. I am honored to have had the opportunity to work for this historical maison. I would like to thank the brilliant team at Balenciaga for their collaboration and for what we have accomplished together, and I am looking forward to taking my own brand to its next level of growth,” he said.
Officials from Balenciaga and parent company Kering praised the buzzy American designer.
“Since 2012, Alexander Wang has stood at the creative helm of the maison and has been instrumental in

Balenciaga, Alexander Wang in Contract Talks

PARIS — Could Balenciaga be facing a change in creative leadership?
Speculation is mounting in Paris that the fashion house, controlled by Kering, could part ways with Alexander Wang, hired in December 2012 as the successor to Nicolas Ghesquière, who exited after a stellar 15-year tenure and subsequently joined Louis Vuitton.
It is understood Wang is still under contract and preparing the next Balenciaga collection for Paris Fashion Week, scheduled for Sept. 29 to Oct. 7.
Spokeswomen for Kering and Wang would only say there are discussions between the designer and Balenciaga regarding the renewal of the contract.
The likelihood of an agreement could not immediately be learned.
As recently as last March, ahead of a fashion show attended by Lady Gaga, Balenciaga touted accelerating double-digit growth, with Wang telling WWD: “I feel we’re already a globally recognized house, and a top luxury leader. We’re well on our way.”
Wang and Balenciaga chief executive officer Isabelle Guichot had described a host of development plans for the company, citing men’s wear and knitwear among chief growth opportunities.
At the time, Guichot said the double-digit gains last year were fueled by “almost all categories, from retail and a very healthy wholesale business.” Balenciaga counts about 500 wholesale doors in

Gaga Goes Brunette for Balenciaga and More Things We Loved at Paris Fashion Week

Lady Gaga brunette

With Christian Dior, Balenciaga, Maison Margiela on the schedule, it’s safe to say that today was one for the fashion heavy-hitters. That’s not to say that certain showgoers didn’t get their fair share of the spotlight, and after yesterday’s dramatic hair transformations (if you hadn’t already heard, Jared Leto and Kim Kardashian West are officially twinning), Lady Gaga flipped the script and went from blonde to brunette in time for Balenciaga’s show. See all the moments that topped our agenda in the roundup below.

1. Gaga goes brunette: Do blondes have more fun? Well, if Lady Gaga is anything to go by, than perhaps not. She bucked the current trend for goldie locks, showing up to Balenciaga with her hair dyed brunette, and slicked back in a tight bun just like the models on the runway.

2. Good things come in small packages: We’ve been coveting the handbags of Belgium leather goods house Delvaux for what seems like eons, and this season our little hearts were taken by their tiniest of tiny new purses.

3. The bomber gets super fancy: Ever seen a bomber jacket with its own velvet train? Us neither—until we laid eyes on the one shown at Undercover this afternoon. Finally a jacket that cool girls can take to the party.

4. It’s just an illusion: There was lots to love in Loewe’s new collection, but the optic art miniskirts in eye-catching colors rank pretty high on our wish list for fall.

5. Lanvin forever: During Fashion Week, it’s always new, new, new all the time, but the opening of the Jeanne Lanvin exhibit at the Palais Galleria tonight was a reminder that looking back can sometimes be just as thrilling as looking forward.
