Craig Green Poised to Plant a ‘Strange Garden’ Behind the Pitti Palace

LONDON — Craig Green is preparing to cast a midsummer night’s spell over the Boboli Gardens for his first Pitti Uomo show as guest men’s wear designer — and it will likely have a dark edge. The designer, usually the hottest ticket on the London men’s schedule, may be all smiles and self-deprecation, but his imagination often spills into strange and shadowy corners.
Green, who is known for his utilitarian and often otherworldly designs that draw on everything from children’s toys to aliens and martial arts, said he chose the gardens, a broad, gentle slope of green behind the Pitti Palace, for a very specific reason. He loves that the Boboli Gardens aren’t manicured “but rather natural and overgrown, like a protective garden, and not too preened or polished, which I think is the beauty in it.”
He also thought it would be interesting to show somewhere “that was so classically Florence, and then try and twist how we present in the space. Hopefully it’s like nothing that has been seen there before.”
The plan for Thursday’s show is to create an installation that reflects “kind of a strange garden. The feeling will be transportive, because we’re showing at night. We’re trying to add

Tokyo’s Coolest Boutique Is Hidden Behind a Love Hotel

TOKYO — Shinjuku red light district Kabukicho has not historically been at the crossroads of high fashion.
That reputation is now being tested. Located behind a love hotel is select shop The Four Eyed, which has set Charles Jeffrey, Y/Project and Martine Rose upon an area regarded for its swarm of hostess clubs and Yakuza enclaves.
Former Fruits magazine photographer Keisuke Fujita opened the boutique in 2016 with the aim to energize Tokyo’s fashion scene. Fujita and shop creative director Maiko Shibukawa hope to push the city’s aesthetic needle past its “stale” cutesy reputation and toward a new, thoughtful era.
“There are no places like this in the area — it’s kind of a weird location, but that’s what is good about it,” Shibukawa said. “We are really anti-kawaii [cute] style, we didn’t want to become one of the Harajuku stores. It’s one of our challenges — to change Tokyo’s mainstream fashion. It has always been about kawaii for the last 20 years of Tokyo fashion.”
Kabukicho’s cheap rents enable Shibukawa to select eclectic merchandise that is not particularly driven by sales. “I pick what I like,” she said. Shoppers can find a hodgepodge of vintage shoes, zines, Mauricio Stein sunglasses and Mimi Wade T-shirts

Meet the Woman Behind the Modeling Industry’s Dutch Dominance

marit code management models

Having long been a destination for scouts in search of elegant new beauties, the Netherlands is responsible for some of fashion’s favorite faces: Modeling icons like ’90s super Karen Mulder, Doutzen Kroes, and Bardot doppelgänger Lara Stone all got their start at home in the Netherlands. One of the reasons behind the current Dutch dominance on the high-fashion scene? Code Management’s Marit Simons, the woman responsible for the careers of several of the current era’s biggest stars, from Imaan Hammam (whom Simons spotted on the streets of Amsterdam) to Prada campaign star Nimue Smit (whom Simons discovered via social media). This season alone, several of the most successful girls—including J.W.Anderson opener Nirvana Naves and Céline star Vera van Erp—got their start thanks to Simons. With the Dutch wave showing no signs of slowing down, Simons explains what separates the new generation of Dutch models from their predecessors and which faces to keep an eye on for 2016.

How did you first become interested in scouting?
As long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in photography, design, and architecture. My plan was to become a photographer or a fashion designer. I’m part of the first generation that grew up with the Internet, so I was doing my own research about the things I liked—discovering new bands, building websites, taking pictures. That led to discovering fashion designers, models, and photographers. When I was about 15 years old I became intrigued by models like Gemma Ward, Lily Donaldson, and Lisa Cant, who were all over Italian Vogue, and I became fascinated with the idea of discovering such unique faces. I became curious about the infrastructure behind the models. At the time, I was asked to do some research for a popular website that kept track of up-and-coming models. Through them I got in touch with some agencies in Holland and started scouting.

After a while, I felt like these agencies were missing out on some opportunities. They did not see things the way I saw them as a young person. I became friends with the photographers I met and started to understand what they needed to accomplish their ideas for a shoot. I started to have my own vision about what an agency should be, a haven that focuses on a few select girls in a very personal way with high-end international goals. That’s when I started Code.

Nimue Smit

Who was the first model you discovered?
The first model I discovered was Nimue Smit. I spotted her picture on a social media website and asked her to meet me with her mom or dad. I was very young at the time for an agent, and her mom later on confessed to me she thought her daughter would be doing some local modeling, nothing too big. A year later, [Nimue] went to New York to shoot the Prada campaign.

What makes scouting in the Netherlands different than scouting in other locations?
In general the people in our country have “tall genes”: We’re a tall—and friendly—bunch of people. That makes a lot of girls more likely to model.

Dutch models have a very pure kind of beauty that radiates health and happiness: high cheekbones, strong eyebrows, full lips, and a fit body. Holland is known for their blonde-hair, blue-eyed beauties like Doutzen [Kroes], Karen Mulder, and Daphne Groeneveld, but there is another generation of young, racially mixed kids growing up into stunning adults. Imaan [Hammam] comes from that generation with a Moroccan mom and dad from Egypt, and Nirvana [Naves] with a Dutch dad and mom from Guyana.

Imaan Hammam

Expand

Imaan Hammam

Photo: Courtesy of Imaan Hammam / @imaanhammam

Why do you think so many successful models come out of the Netherlands?
Dutch people have a softness and positive energy about them that makes them very likable. We also tend to be very active, ambitious people with over-planned agendas. We grow up riding our bikes through the rain, we’re sporty and persistent. We work hard and don’t expect too much. When good things come our way, we’re appreciative and will work harder to keep it up. This down-to-earth mentality allows a lot of Dutch models to stay on top. They’re rarely one-day flies.

Who are the girls we should be keeping an eye on for the future?
Kiki Boreel and Kim van der Laan are two girls with a lot of potential. Kiki just cut her hair, giving her a rock ’n’ roll edge, and Kim looks just like an angel with her light blonde curls and full lips. We also just signed a new, very cool girl by the name of Alex Neij that a lot of people are excited about.

Meet Jerry Lorenzo, the Man Behind L.A.’s Coolest Menswear: Just Ask Rihanna and Bieber

fear of god brand

“It’s just humbling,” says the soft-spoken Jerry Lorenzo via phone, about the rapid success of his menswear label, Fear of God. The line, whose latest offering is available for preorder starting November 1, might only be four collections deep, but it already counts stylish A-listers—including Kanye and Kim Kardashian West, David Beckham, and Justin Bieber—as fans. “I essentially started to go to downtown Los Angeles to make pieces that were missing from my closet,” he says. “Selfishly, so I could look cooler.”

That approach seems to be paying off: Many of his signature jeans and plaid shirts sell out within weeks of posting on the brand’s website. Citing the style of basketball star Allen Iverson and grunge legend Kurt Cobain as his two main influences, Lorenzo attributes the popularity of the line to a foundation of the most essential items in an everyday wardrobe. “Nothing of what I’m doing is anything that hasn’t been seen before,” he says. “It’s sweatshirts, it’s bombers, it’s a dad shirt. It’s classic American menswear with my take on it.”

Jerry Lorenzo

Using the imagery of iconic American rock bands as a starting point, his vintage-inspired band tees have that evergreen cool factor, too, and have been spotted on the likes of Justin Bieber and David Beckham—which only makes sense, given that the brand’s name sounds like it was swiped from the lineup of an alt-rock music festival. “I’m not a graphic artist. For me the best version of a graphic tee is a vintage band tee,” Lorenzo says. “It’s the fact that when you wear it, it might spark a conversation with some 40-year-old fan of Metallica that you bump into in the grocery store.”

It doesn’t hurt that some high-profile women in music have shown interest in the label, as well, including a certain bootylicious superstar. “I had to pause and screenshot Beyoncé when she wore the Fear of God thermals in the video for ‘7/11,’ ” he says. “That was one of the most awesome things.” Lorenzo says his focus is strictly on menswear for now, but who knows— perhaps a Fear of Goddess women’s line is on the horizon.

Rick Nielsen: From Behind the Six String

“I’m a musician. I want to play music and I want to write songs.” — Rick Nielsen

For over 40 years, Cheap Trick has been perpetually touring the world bringing a catalog of catchy songs and ripping guitar licks in tow. And when folks talk about guitar players with energy and intensity, their lead guitarist Rick Nielsen is the personification of those words. He plays a different guitar for each song in the set list, crisscrosses the stage to entertain the crowd as only he can, and watch out: he is notorious for flicking endless guitar picks into the audience. In this recent interview we discussed the guitars, the career, and the recent Rock & Roll Hall of Fame nomination.

2015-10-16-1445029773-1568245-ricknielsen1.jpgPhoto courtesy Leslii Stevens – studio23hudson.com

Rick, you have been called fun, wacky, goofy, energetic, and eccentric. Did you set out to create a specific look or brand for yourself that would set you apart from other musicians, or is this just you being you?

RN: Growing up, I never wanted to be anyone else. I never tried to emulate The Beatles, and I never really wanted to be like The Rolling Stones. I never really felt that I had the look or the demeanor of veteran musicians. I was not one of the guys that wanted to start off with a bang and put a cucumber down his pants. I was always the wise guy class clown throughout my childhood. It wasn’t that I tried to be that, but when someone would say to me, hey Rick, we got to go left here — I’d immediately think, go right. Not because I wanted to, it’s just how I’m wired.

Was the guitar the first instrument you picked up as a child?

RN: No, not really. My parents were both opera singers and they also were both heavily into religious and church music. My father was in a quartet and played secular music. It wasn’t pop music and it wasn’t religious music — it was somewhere in between. I was around music, but the first instrument I took up was the drums.

You seem to have amassed a plethora of guitars over your career. Do you know how many you’ve had at your highest point?

RN: Well, I’ve owned around two thousand or so instruments. Even right now, I have over four or five hundred guitars. I’ve traded them, given them away, smashed them, lost them, sold them — so through the years, the exact number I really don’t know.

Didn’t you also have a touring exhibition of guitars and music memorabilia at one time?
RN: About two years ago, in Rockford, Illinois there was a show called Rick’s Picks. It was at the Burpee Museum of Natural History. We had about 5,000 square feet of room to show off a bunch of my stuff, curated by me. We had thousands of people visit it. It was on display for about eight months. And it was a tenth of my collection throughout my whole career. It was pretty flattering to me. I’ve actually had my guitars on display at other museums over the years. I think I’ve probably had one of my guitars on display at every Hard Rock Café in the world. Some of them are now at the Grammy museum out in Los Angeles.

For playability, which guitar in your arsenal would be your go-to guitar if you could only have just one?

RN: Well, I never did just have one except when I got my first one, and that was like a hundred years ago. There isn’t really one. Hamer had made guitars for me in the early ’70s, and I was always partial to the Gibson Les Paul, and I also like the Fender Esquires and Telecasters. I’ve had almost every brand there is.

2015-10-16-1445029822-3615972-ricknielsen3.jpgPhoto courtesy Leslii Stevens – studio23hudson.com

Can you talk to me about the evolution of the 5-Neck guitar?

RN: It was back in the day when a lot of people were playing double-necks. I already had one that looked like me that was called Uncle Dick. If you look at the Guitar Player Magazine from 1979, I’m on the cover with three guitars stacked on top of each other. Those guitars started to get all beat up. I thought maybe I could design a guitar that spins. So I was going to have a 6-neck guitar built that spun around like a roulette wheel. And right about that time, I saw Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top with a guitar that spun around, and now people will think that I was trying to copy him, which was not the case. So I said, let’s do something more conservative — how about a 5-neck? So, I had that made through Hamer. Then after that I had another checkerboard one made, then I had a 38-string guitar made — and they’re all difficult to play.

2015-10-16-1445030248-277932-ricknielsenguitar.jpgRick Nielsen’s “Uncle Dick” custom guitar

In the ’70s, Cheap Trick put out a few albums but it wasn’t until you went to Japan when all hell broke loose. What was that feeling like?

RN: I thought it was the greatest place on earth. For some reason they liked our stuff, and liked us. I had been banging around since junior high and high school; so, here I am approaching thirty years old. We had a following in Illinois, in bars, but then we started getting fan mail after opening for Queen in 1977. Their road manager ended up being our road manager for a while. So the shows we did with them went over quite well, and there were a lot of Japanese press there to see Queen, but they liked our band, so they started to ask us questions. Then they asked me to write a story about being on tour with Queen. So I wrote about two pages for one of their news outlets. About a month after that, we started to get big fan mail from Japan. We started seeing Japanese comic books with caricatures of us in them. Later that year we went on tour with KISS for a few months. Once again, the Japanese press were there to see KISS, but they liked us. Then our records were released in ’77, and they went to number one in Japan. We had some airplay in the United States, but over there it was great. Then we got an offer to go play in Japan. We went there and played two shows at Budokan in Tokyo and some other shows and it was pandemonium. It was like the scenes you saw in Life Magazine or on TV when The Beatles got mobbed. It was crazy because we had gone from being on the road sleeping four to a room because we didn’t have a lot of money, to this. Then our live album came out and it became an instant hit. It may be the biggest selling album import ever. Then they released it in the United States, and here we are today.

2015-10-16-1445029857-4702462-cheaptrickalbums.jpg

Well, speaking of Live at Budokan and Cheap Trick albums in general, you and Bun E. always ended up on the flip side of the album cover. Was that done on purpose?

RN: But of course. They put the pretty guy on the back cover with me. If you have more stuff on one side, then the picture will be smaller. They thought if we put two guys on the front, and two on that back, that would be cool, and the picture would be bigger. It wasn’t so deliberate, but it kind of was at the same time.

Are there specific songs in the bands set list that you never get tired of playing?
RN: Probably not… I don’t know… No. There’s a certain core of what we always do. Last year we did about 200 shows, and when we were in England and Ireland, there were five to seven shows where we played over a hundred different songs in the sets.

In the digital age of MP3s, streaming music services like Spotify, and instant downloads, music sales, marketing and promotion is dramatically different today than it was when Cheap Trick started out. Have you noticed if it’s helping to pull in a newer generation of fans?

RN: I never got into the aspect of who or why or this survey says… or what this chart does. It’s kind of out of our control. I’ve always just worried about making good records and playing live. I didn’t want to micro-manage what we do, or why it’s done, or what the record company people think. I’m a musician. I want to play music and I want to write songs. Today, we are still playing shows all over the place. We see people of all ages. We did a show recently in Staten Island and one of our biggest fans came. It was her two hundredth show. She was at our first show at Budokan in 1978. It was amazing! So we have people like her that show up, and then we have a lot of kids come with their parents, so it’s more diverse now, age wise, than it used to be.

2015-10-16-1445029883-6831409-ricknielsen2.jpgPhoto courtesy Paris Visone – parisvisone.com

So Cheap Trick is on the 2016 ballot for the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. Do you think it’s time?

RN: It’s not up to me… Yeah, it’s time… Or, maybe a later time… I don’t know. Sure, it would be great. I can’t vote for myself. It’s not up to us. We’ve played a lot of shows. Actually, we’ve played at the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame twice.

Do you believe in a farewell tour?

RN: What, like The Who, or KISS? We never broke up. We’re too dumb to quit is my famous quote. I suppose a farewell tour means something, but we’re still making music. We just made two new records. One is going to be released in the spring (2016), and they other a bit later, and the music doesn’t sound like we’ve been around for forty plus years — it sounds cool! You know, we almost had a farewell when we played up in Canada a few years ago when they stage collapsed on top of us — so that was almost our farewell tour show.

The Truth Behind The Blake Shelton And Gwen Stefani Dating Rumors

Newly-single Gwen Stefani and Blake Shelton are heating things up on “The Voice.” The two coaches seem to have undeniable chemistry, but a source close to Shelton says nothing is going on.

“It’s total bulls**t,” the source told People. “There’s nothing there. They’re nothing more than friends.”

Stefani, lead singer of “No Doubt,” filed for divorce from Gavin Rossdale in August. Rossdale and Stefani were married for nearly 13 years and share three children together.

Though Stefani hasn’t commented directly on the split, she told Cosmopolitan in February, “We go through so much together — it’s a miracle that we could stay together this long.”

Shelton and estranged wife Miranda Lambert announced their divorce in July, after four years of marriage. Despite what happened, Shelton says he’s still friendly with his ex.

“We knew if rumblings and rumors started coming out, they would just be that. By the time anybody knew anything, it was over. It was done,” said Shelton on the “Bobby Bones Show.” ”Our whole thing was, we are going to be cool about this, it is what it is. We’re buddies.”

Season 9 of “The Voice” premiered in September, so there’s still a lot of time to watch Stefani and Shelton flirt interact. But with news that original host Christina Aguilera is coming back for Season 10, this romance rumor could soon be over.

Where ’80s Music Meets Symbolist Painting: The Story Behind Miu Miu’s Surreal Soundtrack

Miu Miu Spring 2016 RTW

Trying to get to the bottom of a Miu Miu collection is like trying to solve a rebus, and this season’s sheer, suited, and glittering showing could be Mrs. Prada’s opus of uncrackable code—though that just might be her intention. Backstage she spoke of irrationality as a keyword to unlocking her collection, a word that also inspired DJ Frédéric Sanchez to create the gloomy-yet-thumping soundtrack that accompanied the Miu Miu models as they strode through the set’s arches.

Sanchez’s soundtrack centered on Killing Joke’s seminal ’80s track “Love Like Blood,” which came in remixes alongside the original and was paired against German electronic music and punk songs from the late ’80s and early ’90s. The auditory mix was as much of a lesson in contrasts as Mrs. Prada’s clothing, a little sweet and a little sadistic, all rolled into a fantastical mélange.

The jumping-off point for the Parisian creative was the set, made of silver and gold undulating archways. “When I saw the set, there was something very medieval about this architecture. I started thinking about things like The Devils by Ken Russell and this idea of how to do medieval things in a kind of fantastical way and in a dark, science fiction sort of way,” Sanchez explained over the phone.

That led him to the late ’80s and its moody music with a surreal edge. “There was a certain moment in the ’80s where you have the Batcave moment and bands like Bauhaus and Killing Joke alongside this kind of poetry and romanticism that you find in youth culture and Symbolism,” Sanchez notes, adding Symbolist artists like Fernand Khnopff and Jean Delville to his list of references alongside ska and rudeboy culture.

Should that barrage of cross-cultural sources feel slightly overwhelming, Sanchez is happy to break down the parallels he was exploring: “It’s the romanticism of youth. I remember when I was 14 or 15, I was listening to bands like Joy Division and the Cure, but at the same time I was reading Lautréamont,” he noted, citing this intersection of the dark and the beautiful as a place of particular interest. If that sounds like something you might only find in a dream, well, maybe that’s the point. “The soundtrack is not really about what the Miu Miu girl would be listening to, it’s more something mental, what’s in her head, what she’s thinking at this moment.”

Take a listen to Killing Joy’s “Love Like Blood” below while you click through Miu Miu’s Spring collection and put yourself in a Miu Miu headspace. It’s not a bad place to be.

News in Brief: Study Finds Harshly Criticizing U.S. Education System Only Causing It To Fall Further Behind Peers

PALO ALTO, CA—Explaining that even the most well-meaning criticism can lead to adverse repercussions, a study released Thursday by researchers at Stanford University has found that berating the U.S. education system has only caused it to fall further behind its international peers. “We often feel compelled to point out flaws and shortcomings when we’re trying to help our nation achieve its goals, but our research shows that criticizing a struggling institution like the United States education system actually lowers its confidence and causes it to perform even more poorly,” said the study’s lead author, Julie Ostel, who noted that authorities’ tendency to harp on the country’s substandard math and science skills was correlated with steady declines in math and science test scores. “People might think they’re helping when they highlight the educational deficits of our school systems by comparing them to academic standouts like …

Makeup Artist Pat McGrath on the Story Behind Givenchy’s Extraordinary Face Masks

What will Riccardo Tisci do next? This was the question on the minds of the designer’s loyal fashion fans as they settled into their seats along the Hudson River pier at tonight’s Givenchy show—and that growing spirit of anticipation didn’t stop at the neck: On the heels of last season’s darkly romantic Victorian collection, where models’ elaborate facial jewelry culminated in a heart-stoppingly provocative expression of beauty that nearly stole the show, the idea of upping the proverbial ante seemed like a bit of a tall order. And yet leave it to Tisci, always the contrarian, to suddenly flip the script: With the dim of the lights and the clang of a bell, Mariacarla Boscono stepped onto the runway—her hair falling straight over her shoulders and her skin stripped almost bare.

Just a few hours earlier, makeup artist Pat McGrath had foreshadowed the sharp change of pace backstage. “Riccardo wanted a softness, but also a strangeness,” she said of the decision to treat skin with a bit of concealer, a swipe of brown mascara on the upper lashes, and a “grayish brown smolder of shadow around the eye” before bleaching the brows blonde for a supernatural effect. Only two girls—Joan Smalls and Imaan Hammam—were being prepped to wear a trace of color in the form of a vinyl-lacquered deep red lip.

But then what to make of the velvet shrouded area tucked discreetly in the far corner, where makeup assistants were slipping in and out of a hidden room holding trays filled with sparkling embellishments? With a sweep of the curtain, McGrath revealed five more models that had been designated with a special purpose. Each one sat patiently as a team of artists used beads and fabric to construct the elaborate ivory-color face masks that McGrath had dreamed up with Tisci for the occasion over the course of the previous week; still another model was having a series of gold and black graphic metal slivers crafted into a gleaming headpiece that wrapped around her ears.

“Spray work, layer upon layer of jewels, bits of lace taken from the dresses,” said McGrath, ticking off a list of materials that were being layered onto the skin with professional adhesive in an upwards-of-five-hours-long process to create a look that was “romantic, organic, and all about pattern.”

True to form, when Tisci’s masked models finally stepped onto the runway—their facial constructions as fiercely feminine and ethereal as their couture statement dresses—they brought the fashion house’s otherworldly vision of beauty brilliantly to life.

What Is Behind the Recent Surge of ’90s TV Reboots?

still-new-90s_Nostalgia-by-emma-berliner

Expand

This year, a slew of nineties television shows have recently found a new life almost two decades after they initially went off the air. It all kicked off late in 2014, when David Lynch announced on Twitter he would be reviving Twin Peaks on Showtime. Then in January, Fox revealed that it will be rebooting The X-Files. From then on, nineties show after nineties show started making headlines: A new season of The Magic School Bus will debut on Netflix (after the streaming platform realized its viewers were streaming the original in droves). Zac Efron and Dwayne Johnson broke the news on Twitter that they would both be starring in a new Baywatch movie. TVLine reported that Will Smith was in talks to reboot his breakout show, The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. And the entire cast of Full House (sans the Olsen twins) is set to reunite for a sequel series called Fuller House, in which a now-widowed D.J. (Candace Cameron Bure) is raising her kids with the help of her family.

So what’s behind this recent surge of nineties nostalgia? Vogue’s Sarah Mower thinks the rise of nineties fashion on the runways comes down to simple math. “All you do is take today’s date, 2015, and subtract 25 (the age of today’s rising designers). Result: 1990, of course!” She argues that young designers reminisce about their hazily remembered childhoods and tend to draw inspiration from that time in their lives. The same logic may apply to our taste in TV and movies. Think about it: We all enjoy re-watching films we idolized when we were just kids, even if they no longer hold up as well as they once did. (My personal favorite is Death Becomes Her, which is really the definition of camp.) It’s human nature to look at the past through rose-tinted glasses, and we apply that romanticized memory to our dearly departed TV series. Have you tried watching an episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air recently? That show would never make it past the pilot stage today.

But there are some people who do love re-watching these nineties series and, with the rise of streaming services, it’s easier than ever. Netflix in particular has become a savior of fan-favorite shows that were prematurely canceled. After bringing back Arrested Development in 2013, Netflix has since rebooted The Magic School Bus, Full House, and Wet Hot American Summer.

Of course, Netflix is only following the formula that has already proven incredibly successful in Hollywood. Every summer, we’re treated to sequels, remakes, prequels, and spin-offs of films we’ve seen in the past. The Spider-Man franchise perfectly mirrors this trend. The original movie only came out in 2002, and since then we’ve had three iterations with different web-slinging heroes: Tobey Maguire, Andrew Garfield, and the latest, Tom Holland. It makes sense that television, a medium that is increasingly attracting top film directing and acting talent, would eventually go the same way.

Plus, it’s lucrative for networks to bring back shows from the past because they already have an established fan base. Millennials have proven to be some of TV’s most passionate TV fans; they’ve succeeded in bringing back cult favorites including Veronica Mars and The X-Files after intense social media campaigns. When producers are weighing whether to invest in a new series or remake an old one, the allure of an already committed audience is simply too hard to resist. So while you may not necessarily tune in to watch a comedy about a widow raising kids with her kooky uncles, you’ll definitely tune in to Fuller House—just to see what Uncle Jesse has been up to after all these years.

Speaking of Uncle Jesse, John Stamos was one of the most vocal supporters of bringing back Full House. It makes sense that he would feel nostalgic for that particular era; after all, it was the show that launched his career. Since the cast began filming Fuller House, Stamos has been busy Instagramming on-set photos, and the reaction from fans has been overwhelmingly positive. Any of this sound familiar? The reboot story is basically the premise of Netflix’s original scripted show BoJack Horseman. In the animated series, BoJack is a washed-up actor who became famous after starring in a family sitcom called Horsin’ Around. After the series is canceled, his career tanks and the depressed equine actor constantly fantasizes about staging a reunion with his former castmates. But, contrary to real life, no one seems particularly interested in bringing Horsin’ Around back to life. If the show’s writers are paying any attention, we’re betting BoJack will get his wish come season three.

Making of a Style Icon: The Stylist Behind Laverne Cox’s Fashion

She’s beauty, she’s grace, she’s ruling the red carpet. Actress Laverne Cox, star of Netflix’s Orange Is The New Black, wherever she goes, is turning heads and wowing the press with her elegantly unique style.

After being named one of Time‘s 100 Most Influential People, scoring a coveted spot on People‘s Most Beautiful People list, and appearing on numerous magazine covers, it’s hard to keep up with this megastar.

But even a great deal more is going on. Laverne Cox is establishing herself as not just a leading figure promoting the transgender community, but also as a style icon.

It is often thought that behind most exceedingly successful individuals is a person helping navigate the tricky waters of stardom. So who’s the stylist working with Laverne to perfect her sophisticated aesthetic? Christina Pacelli, stylist to Laverne, shares with us the process of elevating someone into style stardom.

As most fashion boys and girls do, this Huntington Beach, California native discovered her love for fashion at a young age. She says she first became fixated on clothes in fourth grade. Back-to‐school‐shopping was the highlight of her year. With a mother from Mexico and a first-generation Italian father, Pacelli says her upbringing was anything but conventional, as she has been on her own and financially autonomous since the tender age of 15.

Clueless‘s Cher and My‐So‐Called‐Life‘s Jared Leto have all provided inspiration to Pacelli, who admires their hard-to-achieve “I don’t give a damn” look.

After studying Communications and Law at UCLA, she began her professional career as an entertainment and lifestyle publicist. She then transitioned to her love of fashion and began apprenticing for stylists such as New York‐based Anna Katsanis, who has styled editorials for major magazines around the world.

Through her publicist relationships, Pacelli was introduced to Laverne and it was fireworks from the start.

Pacelli says:

Laverne and I share the same stylistic approach. She has an admirable sense of fashion, and a great point of view when it comes to personal style and the fashion industry. She is very involved in her styling, which I believe comes through in her looks. In Laverne’s words, ‘I follow the guiding pillars of FFPS in fashion — Fit, Fabric, Proportion and Silhouette. If all are right, then the look will translate well’

But how do all of the buzz-worthy looks come together? From custom Marc Bouwer to Viktor Luna, Cox and Pacelli have procured show‐stopping styles.

Pacelli says:

When Laverne and I first began working together, we briefed one another on our individual stylistic philosophies. With Laverne, it is not simply about wearing a designer garment. What she wears embodies her personality, confidence and her role for the occasion, or it will feel out of place and naturally won’t be worn.

With so many notable moments, Pacelli says that some of her proudest times with Laverne include the 2014 Emmy Awards in custom Marc Bouwer, the Creative Arts Emmys and Entertainment Weekly party in Donna Karan and the White House Correspondents Dinner in Ines Di Santo. Pacelli notes, “Laverne’s style has always been feminine and pretty. Our work together has built upon that, to take her style to non-obvious places and further showcase her confidence, grace, strength and sophistication.”

Landing spots on countless best‐dressed lists, Christina does not disregard the strides they have made together.

Pacelli describes:

She has been called a style icon on the rise. I do not disagree with that. She is making history with her presence in the industry and I do not take the job lightly. As a transgender black woman who has already pioneered so much, and broken barriers, the way Laverne looks and dresses has an impact and influence upon so many people, LGBT or non‐LGBT. People have shared with me they have been moved to tears observing Laverne because of what she stands for and how she inspired them with her visual presence.

Christina herself has been tapped to be featured in a Viacom series, which will air on MTV and Netflix.

As Laverne continues to gain meteoric success and notoriety, it’s clear we have a great deal of fierce fashion to look forward to. And not only will the fashion be beautiful, but Cox and Pacelli will together be defying cultural norms and changing the world’s perception of the transgender community.

“I knew that styling Laverne Cox came with more responsibility than just vanity. She inspires people simply by what she is wearing. And then she speaks and inspires them more. I understand and take my responsibility very seriously. I know eyes are on Laverne from all over the world.”

Meet the Woman Behind Beyoncé’s Street Style Transformation

2015-08-21-1440178778-8853572-beyoncestreetstyleevolution2.jpg

by EDWARD BARSAMIAN

“She wears the crown for all the work that she’s put into the industry,” says Beyoncé’s personal wardrobe curator, Zerina Akers. “But I also want her to have fun. After all she is a woman.”

Over the past year, Akers has worked with the multiplatinum superstar analyzing the right cuts, fits, and silhouettes solidifying Queen Bey’s place in fashion royalty–one which the consummately best-dressed singer maintains through not only her own wardrobe, but a forthcoming partnership with Topshop, too. But there’s another, equally stylish side of the pop icon, and anyone who visits the 33-year-old’s Instagram or website will notice: Recently she has been upping her fashion game with seemingly impromptu shoots no matter where in the world she happens to be. We’ve also seen Bey sport some names outside the runway regulars including Harbison, Marco de Vincenzo, and Romeo Hunte–courtesy of Akers. “I really wanted to bring in some new designers, some younger kids to see what they’re doing,” Akers told us recently, adding, “and then incorporate more international designers and underground streetwear designers out of London.”

It’s been a masterful evolution for the singer who has lately taken to bold color, feminine prints, and punchy accessories. For the Mayweather-Pacquiao fight, Mrs. Carter slipped into a cardinal Harbison jumpsuit, while another occasion saw her opt for a tailored, canary yellow Zadig & Voltaire suit emphasizing the star’s renewed focus on rainbow-like shades. “I wanted to be a little more experimental with color,” says Akers, adding, “like the orange Cushnie et Ochs top and pink Dsquared2 shorts. She’s such a bright person and I feel like in fashion today everyone strays away from color.”

However, one outfit that Akers references as a favorite was an all-cream look Beyoncé wore earlier this summer, which hinted at the shift in wardrobe that’s sophisticated and clean, but accessible: Pairing a topper from Barneys New York with Frame Denim jeans, her ensemble was a study in how to approach neutral dressing at all price points. “High-low is all about color selection, shape, and fabrication of the garment,” explains Akers. “I can get a skirt for $ 50 in matte jersey. It’s going to move and hug the body in a similar way as a skirt that’s $ 795.” Akers says the secret to her A-list client’s style comes down to the fit: She and Bey have been gravitating toward asymmetrical and bias cuts.

But the best part of her role, the stylist maintains, is being able see Beyoncé excited about the looks. “That’s the reward,” says Akers matter-of-factly. “That she’s enjoying herself and feels beautiful and confident.” How else, after all, to run the world?

Love Is Free an ideal late summer release, one with low stakes and high heat; it’s loose, funky, and fecund, pulling from Arthur Russell, Zapp, and Deee-Lite in equal measure. And while I’ll take any excuse to spend 20 minutes hanging with someone as inviting and dynamic as…

News in Brief: Obama Practices Defiant Speech To Aliens Late At Night Behind Oval Office Desk

WASHINGTON—Testing out different phrases and vocal inflections as he has done almost every night for the past seven years, President Barack Obama sat at his desk in the early morning hours Friday rehearsing a defiant speech he’d give to aliens should they one day invade, Oval Office sources confirmed. “We are a proud, resilient species, and we will never surrender to you,” Obama reportedly said aloud emphatically, before pausing to jot down several potential rewordings in his legal pad as well as a double-underlined reminder to himself to “pound fist at end for effect.” “‘This is Earth; it is our home. We will defend our planet, whatever the costs may be. Your technology may be more advanced than ours, but if you come here seeking to harm our kind, we will know your morals are not as developed as our own.’ Yeah, that’s pretty good. Let me …

The Story Behind True Detective’s Cover of ‘The Rose’

Given True Detective’s penchant for teasing out legendary tales, it’s fitting that a king (or, rather, the shadow of one) hovers over the second season’s third episode. It opens with what appears to be an Elvis impersonator (played by Jake La Botz) decked out in a shimmering powder-blue suit. He’s on his knees, pomaded hair slicked back, hamming it up onstage at Ray Velcoro’s local dive bar, not by lip-synching an Elvis tune but “The Rose,” a Conway Twitty cover first made famous by Bette Midler.

Jerry Weintraub, Hollywood Producer Behind ‘Ocean’s Eleven,’ Dead At 77

NEW YORK (AP) — One of the last of the classic Hollywood showmen, Jerry Weintraub built his show business empire on a Rolodex and chutzpah.

The Brooklyn-born son of a Bronx jeweler, Weintraub rose from the mailroom of a talent agency to become a top concert promoter before shifting into a decades-long career as a top Hollywood producer. Along the way, Weintraub worked with the most famous of stars — Elvis Presley, Frank Sinatra, George Clooney, Brad Pitt — and was a close friend of former President George H.W. Bush. He relished his insider status, just as they savored the stories that eagerly poured out of him.

Weintraub, the dynamic producer and manager who pushed the career of John Denver and produced such hits movies as “Nashville,” ”Karate Kid” and “Ocean’s Eleven,” died Monday in Santa Barbara, California. He was 77. A publicist for Weintraub said he died of cardiac arrest.

“Jerry was an American original who earned his success by the sheer force of his instinct, drive, and larger-than-life personality,” said Bush, a longtime friend. “He had a passion for life, and throughout the ups and downs of his prolific career, it was clear just how much he loved show business.”

Weintraub failed in one of his most ambitious gambits. His attempt to found his own studio, Weintraub Entertainment Group, ended in bankruptcy after only three years. But his long career — very much alive at the time of his passing — was marked by savvy innovation (he was among the first to stage arena tours) and old-school class.

Weintraub had his choice lunch spots in Los Angeles, his desert home in Palm Springs and his favored places to moor his yacht off the French Riviera. A self-made man, he fashioned himself in the mold of old Hollywood showman like Mike Todd, Cecil B. DeMille and P.T. Barnum. He titled his 2011 memoir: “When I Stop Talking, You’ll Know I’m Dead.”

At the time, he joked he might write another: “Dead, But Still Talking.”

“In the coming days there will be tributes about our friend Jerry Weintraub,” said Clooney, a star of the “Ocean’s” movies. “We’ll laugh at his great stories and applaud his accomplishments. And in the years to come, the stories and accomplishments will get better with age, just as Jerry would have wanted it. But not today. Today our friend died.”

One of Weintraub’s most recent successes was the 2013 Liberace drama “Behind the Candelabra.” After the studios passed, he took it to HBO, where it won 11 Emmys.

He left numerous projects behind, including the recently debuted HBO series “The Brink” with Jack Black, and an upcoming big-budget remake of “Tarzan.”

“If asked my philosophy, it would be simply this: Savor life, don’t press too hard, don’t worry too much. Or as the old-timers say, ‘Enjoy,'” he wrote his book. “But … I never could live by this philosophy and was, in fact, out working, hustling, trading, scheming, and making a buck as soon as I was old enough to leave my parents’ house.”

Growing up, Weintraub said he father, a successful gem salesman, taught him “only two things are important at the end of the week: how much you owe the bank and how much you have in it.”

Hired to work in the mailroom of the William Morris Agency, Weintraub then landed a job with Lew Wasserman’s MCA, where he worked as advance man for the agency’s stars.

His career as a promoter took a giant step in 1970 when after a lengthy courtship he persuaded Elvis Presley’s manager, Col. Tom Parker, to let him promote Presley concerts. It was at a time when Presley was beginning to do live shows after years of concentrating on movies.

Weintraub and partner Tom Hulett introduced such improvements as a modern sound system for Presley, an experience that propelled Weintraub into the top ranks of promoters.

Around the same time, Weintraub saw Denver at a small Greenwich Village nightclub and was overwhelmed by the mountaineer’s easy manner. He took on Denver as a client.

“He would be a test case for all my theories on selling and packaging, for everything I had learned since I left home,” Weintraub said.

After enormous success followed, Denver bought Weintraub a Rolls-Royce as a thank-you gift. Weintraub said, “I couldn’t help thinking that it wasn’t too long ago that neither of us had bus fare.”

Weintraub produced a dozen Denver musical specials on television — winning an Emmy for one of them — and the hit 1977 movie “Oh, God!” It starred George Burns as God and Denver as the young grocer whom God approaches to spread his message.

He also set up successful tours for Sinatra and produced the television special “Sinatra — the Main Event,” as well as joint appearances with Denver. Among other musicians Weintraub worked with were Bob Dylan, Neil Diamond and the Beach Boys.

After his first marriage (which resulted in a son, Michael), Weintraub married torch singer Jane Morgan in 1965. They had three adopted children: Julie, Jamie and Jordy. The pair separated but never divorced.

Weintraub’s emphasis shifted to movies with 1975’s “Nashville,” Robert Altman’s acclaimed comedy-drama of American life as seen through the eyes of 24 characters in and around the country music business. It landed five Oscar nominations, including best picture.

In his memoir, Weintraub said he didn’t understand the complicated script, but he was eager to produce it because “Altman did, and it was Altman who was going to make the movie.”

Weintraub went on to produce such notable films as Barry Levinson’s “Diner,” ”All Night Long,” ”The Karate Kid,” and William Friedkin’s controversial, gay-themed “Cruising.”

He became chief of United Artists in 1985 but was ousted after just five months amid reports of disagreements with financier Kirk Kerkorian. He later reached a settlement with the company.

In 1987, he attempted to establish his own studio, WEG, but it went belly up in 1990 after a string of flops including “My Stepmother Is an Alien.”

“I had, in a sense, promoted myself out of the job I always wanted, which was telling stories, producing,” he wrote in his memoir. “(The films) now were being made for me instead of by me.”

After the WEG bankruptcy, Weintraub continued producing, putting out such films as “Vegas Vacation” and “Ocean’s Eleven” and its starry sequels. He remade “The Karate Kid” in 2010, setting the project up in China and starring the young Jaden Smith, Will Smith’s son. Weintraub said he “questioned it 150,000 times” before backing it.

Starting in the 1980s, Weintraub became known as one of the Republican Party’s most loyal supporters in Hollywood. He had been close to Bush years before he became president, and in 1991, he hosted a star-studded party for the president at his Malibu home and played golf with Bush and former President Ronald Reagan.

Blaine Gibson, Disney Legend Behind ‘Pirates’ And ‘Haunted Mansion,’ Dies At 97

Legendary Disney animator and sculptor Blaine Gibson, who designed some of the most iconic images in the company’s theme parks around the world, died on Sunday, according to the Orange Country Register.

He was 97.

Gibson worked alongside Walt Disney during the development of Disneyland, and his sculptures were used to create the faces on characters in rides such as “Pirates of the Caribbean” and “Haunted Mansion” as well as the “Enchanted Tiki Room” show.

He also sculpted “Partners,” a statue of Walt Disney holding the hand of Mickey Mouse that sits in front of the castles at Disneyland and Walt Disney World, among other places.

Family friend Carla Larissa Fallberg wrote on Facebook that Gibson had watched “101 Dalmatians” — a film he worked on as an animator — with his grandson “before he took his final nap.”

Gibson, who was born in Colorado in 1918, joined Disney in 1939. In addition to “101 Dalmatians,” he worked as an animator on “Bambi,” “Song of the South,” “Alice in Wonderland,” “Peter Pan” and “Sleeping Beauty,” according to IMDB.

Although an animator, Gibson’s hobby was sculpture. Walt Disney saw one of Gibson’s art exhibitions and in 1954 asked him to work on Disneyland, a year before the theme park would open.

Gibson initially wasn’t crazy about leaving animation to work in theme parks.

I didn’t think it was that important, but then I was told Walt was expecting me to work on these projects,” he said, according to the company. “So I said to myself, ‘what the heck’ and went (to Walt Disney Imagineering). I was never sorry after that.”

At first, Gibson continued to work as an animator, but switched over to Walt Disney Imagineering (then known as WED Enterprises) in 1961, where he supervised the newly created sculpture department, the company said in a 2013 blog post about Gibson.

Along with working on Disneyland, Gibson did sculpture work for some of the Disney exhibits at the 1964 World’s Fair, including a sculpture of Abraham Lincoln used to produce the audio-animatronic featured in “Great Moments With Mr. Lincoln.”

Since then, he directed the sculpture of every U.S. President used in the Hall of Presidents at Walt Disney World up to George W. Bush.

Gibson retired in 1983 after 45 years with the company, but continued to work as a consultant and completed the “Partners” statue in 1993.

disney partners statue

Gibson is the recipient of two of the company’s biggest honors. In 1992, a window was dedicated to him on Main Street, USA in Disneyland:

The following year, Gibson was named a Disney Legend.

Man Behind ‘Oprah,’ ‘Dr. Phil’ Remembered At Star-Studded Memorial Service

A who’s who of Hollywood, music and politics gathered last night at the Skirball Cultural Center in Los Angeles to celebrate the life of Michael King, the much-beloved syndication king behind wildly successful shows like Wheel of Fortune, Jeopardy, The Oprah Winfrey Show, Roseanne and Dr. Phil. King passed away suddenly March 27 at age 67 from complications of pneumonia.

Former President Bill Clinton, Oprah Winfrey, Norman Lear, Elton John, Whoopi Goldberg and Sugar Ray Leonard, among others, remembered King as an “intellectual” but “street-smart” businessman, a generous philanthropist and exceptionally kind and devoted friend, brother, husband, father and uncle. Kenny G, Michael Bolton and David Foster performed at the invitation-only event, held by King’s wife, Jena and children Ali, Audrey, Teddy and Jesse.

As Clinton remarked later in the program, referencing a poem by William Wordsworth, King’s “last best hope of his great good life were the unforgettable acts of kindness, love and laughter. We are all here because we basked in his embrace.”

White floral arrangements and candles in tall glass votives set a peaceful scene as bagpipes welcomed 400-plus guests, including Bobby Kennedy Jr., Sylvester Stallone and Jennifer Flavin, Don Henley and Joe Walsh from The Eagles, Netflix’s Ted Sarandos, producer Lawrence Bender and acrots Tommy Chong, Paul Reiser and Lorraine Bracco.

A bagpipe rendition of “Amazing Grace” marked the start of the service, after which Monsignor Lloyd Torgerson from St. Monica’s Church in Santa Monica, California led those gathered in prayer.

King’s children then came on stage, the oldest three giving emotional, at times tearful, speeches about their love for their dad — and his love for them. Eldest daughter and singer Ali said King was “the funniest person I know.” Son Teddy, a student at the University of Southern California, called his father his “best friend.” Teenage daughter Audrey welcomed guests and spoke on behalf of her mother, who was seated in the audience, then read two searing poems she wrote herself, leaving many attendees in tears.

In one, titled “Poem For My Mom,” she wrote:

A love so intangible, is that much
More alluring-
That much more passionate.
When you feel the cold wind
Just know it is him kissing your neck,
Teasing your senses,
Reminding you
He loves you.

Teddy introduced the former president with an anecdote of a trip he took with his dad and Clinton to South Africa, where the trio had gone to do charity work and visit Nelson Mandela. A known jokester, King impersonated Clinton, who had fallen asleep in the jeep. The account elicited laughs from the audience.

“Teddy, thanks for that wonderful story, I would far rather be impersonated by your father than anyone I can think of,” Clinton began, to laughter. “I will say this: We have this vast King clan here, and we had the bagpipers playing, and I thought, ‘It is so Michael King, ending with a flourish, an invasion of the Skirball Center by the Irish Catholics.'”

Clinton continued on a serious note, referencing the Charleston shooting on June 18.

“Everywhere in the world is bedeviled by people who are the opposite of Michael King. People who think all that matters is our differences,” Clinton said. “We have more refugees than any time since World War II. It was a terrible, terrible thing that happened in South Carolina yesterday. Michael King is the polar opposite of all that.”

Robert, King’s brother and partner in King World Productions, followed the former president’s remarks, saying his younger brother “would not want us to mourn his death; he’d want us to celebrate.” Older brother Richie offered a few, heartbroken words about the loss of a national treasure, his business partner and his best friend of 67 years. “That’s all I can say,” he said, choking back tears.

Kenny G performed, dedicating his song, “Innocence,” to the family. And tributes, tears and laughter continued.

Collaborator and producer Jeff Wald joked, “I was worried about going on after President Clinton — then I realized I couldn’t do worse than George Bush.”

Producer Norman Lear panned, “There are people all over this town who would die to put a crowd like this together.” Confessing that he had thought King was Jewish throughout their 30-year friendship until just before the memorial service, Lear said, “Jewish. Irish. It doesn’t matter. Michael was the definition of the word ‘mensch.'”

The speeches were interspersed by video tributes from those unable to attend, including Elton John, Whoopi Goldberg and Sugar Ray Leonard. In hers, Oprah Winfrey offered her condolences and shared photos and memories of King. “Here was a man who really knew how to live. He didn’t just live big — he lived huge,” she said.

Major philanthropists to many causes, King and his wife donated to friend, lawyer and speaker Robert Shapiro’s foundation to combat drug addiction, and to Ted Danson and Mary Steenburgen’s Oceana foundation, the largest ocean-conservation charity in the world.

“I really felt Michael got to experience the joy of what it means to be human,” Danson said. “He got to love and be loved.”

The event concluded with musical performances by Michael Bolton and producer David Foster, who sent the crowd off on a buoyant note: “Let’s do this right. Everybody get up, scream, shout, and stomp your feet so wherever he is, he can hear us right now.”

Faces Of Death: The Mugs Behind Some Of America’s Deadliest Shootings [Photos]

Too often are we forced as a nation to grieve and “band together” after heinous and unthinkable acts of violence. While we’ll never forget the victims, take a look at the faces of evil. The men behind a handful of America’s deadliest shootings.
