If You Can’t Get Hard, Don’t Assume Condoms Are To Blame

Academic studies can be fascinating… and totally confusing. So we decided to strip away all of the scientific jargon and break them down for you

The Background
It’s hard to pinpoint exactly how many young men suffer from occasional erectile dysfunction, but estimates range from 16 to 30 percent. One thing that kills a man’s mojo, according to studies (and a handful of guys on the Internet), is condoms. But condoms are pretty important: Among singles, they’re used in one in three acts of sexual intercourse. Understanding how they affect erections can help couples navigate those awkward pre-coitus conversations so that they’re able to make informed decisions and prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections.

A new study published in The Journal of Sexual Medicine explores how condoms affect men’s erections and provides a useful perspective for those aforementioned couples.

The Setup
Researchers surveyed 479 heterosexual men between the ages of 18 and 24 who had used a condom during sex within the last 90 days. In order to oversample men with condom-associated erection problems, the researchers solicited participants using flyers that read “Do condoms interfere with your erections?” and “Do condoms interfere with your arousal?”

For the actual survey, the men were first asked how often they had erectile problems in the last 90 days when they were not using condoms. They were specifically asked to explain at which point they lost their erections during the hook up — before putting it in or after (but before they reached orgasm). Then, the men were asked about their erectile problems in the last 90 days when they were using condoms. The guys reported how often they lost or started to lose erections while putting the condom on before vaginal intercourse, and then how often they lost or started to lose erections while wearing a condom during intercourse.

The Findings
Of the 479 men surveyed, about 62 percent had condom-associated erectile problems before penetration, after penetration or during both instances. After analyzing the results, the researchers discovered an interesting finding: The young men who reported condom-associated erectile problems were more likely to report trouble getting hard even when no condom was used. In general, guys who had trouble staying hard using condoms were significantly more likely to be classified as having mild to moderate erectile dysfunction than the ones who weren’t affected by using rubbers.

The Takeaway
Since men in the study tended to lose erections condom or no condom, these findings suggest that condoms may not necessarily be to blame. Previous research has linked emotions, like worry and distraction, with erectile dysfunction. The researchers write that it’s possible that men who lose erections after using a condom might become worried about losing them in general and thus become more vulnerable to losing erections without condoms.

But this isn’t just a matter of emotions: Erectile problems have been linked to inconsistent and incomplete condom use, which puts people at risk for STIs and unwanted pregnancy. According to the researchers, education can be crucial for guys who may need to properly learn how to use a condom (37 percent of the men sampled said they’d never been taught how to use a condom correctly). The researchers also suggest it could also be a matter of arousal — these men may simply need more time to get it up or need certain things to stay stimulated. Either way, if a man is having difficulties, they recommend he consult a health practitioner.

Moral of the story for women? If a guy says he can’t stay hard when he wears a condom, it’s probably a good idea to be frank about your concerns surrounding safe sex. And hey, it might be a good opportunity to talk about what you both need to keep things exciting in bed, too.

Teen Admits To Killing His 11-Year-Old Brother; Who’s Really To Blame?

In July 2013, Shawna Smith reported her 11-year-old son missing. Three days later, Terry “Juju” Smith Jr. was found dead near his California home. Shawna’s other son, 16-year-old Skylor, later admitted to killing his half-brother and was convicted of voluntary manslaughter. But Juju’s father, Terry Sr., believes Shawna may have helped to bury the body and cover up the crime, accusations she vehemently denies, claiming her ex is rehashing issues from their bitter divorce.

Is Husband To Blame For Wife’s Disappearance?

Julie Earley, 50, disappeared without a trace from Trotwood, Ohio, in May 2012, and her sister, Kim, says she is convinced that Julie’s husband, Cregg, killed her in a fit of rage.

“Cregg is a rageful, violent person, a liar and very narcissistic. I am very afraid of him,” Kim says in the video above. “When I found out my sister was missing, it was instant panic. I immediately thought Cregg had done something to her.”

Julie’s sister-in-law, Jill, also believes Cregg has something to hide. “Am I convinced Cregg killed her? Yes, I am,” Jill says. “I want Cregg to know, you think you can run, but you can’t hide.”

But Cregg, who had been married to Julie for seven years, vehemently denies the accusations. “I love Julie,” he says. “I’ve saved her life so many times; I would have never hurt her.”

Cregg says he believes his wife is still alive and that someone picked her up from their home. He accuses Julie’s ex-husband of being involved in her disappearance — but the ex-husband points the finger right back at Cregg.

Although the FBI asked Cregg to take a polygraph test, he refused. “I don’t believe in them,” he says. “I don’t personally feel that I have to prove anything to anybody … Her family’s been falsely accusing me since she disappeared. I don’t care what they think. I don’t care what anybody thinks. I have nothing to do with my wife’s disappearance.”

Cregg adds, “My wife has been missing three years, and my world is still in shambles.”

Kim responds, “He tries to play like he’s the victim. In fact, he’s the murderer.”

What does Cregg say happened on the day Julie disappeared? Why did he wait more than a week to report her missing? Watch more from Wednesday’s episode of Dr. Phil here.

‘Morning Joe’ Hosts Blame Rappers For Racist Frat Video And Twitter Responds In The Best Possible Way

Black Twitter blasted the hosts of MSNBC’s “Morning Joe” on Wednesday for their controversial remarks about the racist actions of Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity members at the University of Oklahoma.

Hosts Mika Brzezinski and Joe Scarborough brought up rapper Waka Flocka Flame’s “disgust” with the video and his decision to cancel his upcoming campus appearance before suggesting that rappers are in fact to blame for the fraternity’s racist behavior.

“If you look at every single song, I guess you call these, that he’s written, it’s a bunch of garbage,” Brzezinski said. “It’s full of N-words, it’s full of F-words. It’s wrong. And he shouldn’t be disgusted with them, he should be disgusted with himself.”

“The kids that are buying hip-hop or gangster rap, it’s a white audience, and they hear this over and over again,” Scarborough added. “So do they hear this at home? Well, chances are good, no, they heard a lot of this from guys like this who are now acting shocked.”

Brzezsinski clarified her comments in a later appearance on MSNBC, saying, “The students in the video are responsible for their behavior. And as we said on our show this morning, they did it, and it’s beyond appalling.”

“In no way is anybody else to blame for what they did on that bus,” she continued. “They are responsible and they made that choice.”

But the backlash had already begun. Twitter users took to their timelines to slam the statements through a satirical hashtag that has since become a trending topic: #RapAlbumsThatCausedSlavery.

Here are just a few examples of the tweets proving Black Twitter never disappoints:

The Danger of Blame

There is a very dangerous drug on the streets that nobody is talking about. It’s called blameoin (pronounced: blame-o-win).

Blameoin is a drug that makes you believe that someone else is always at fault and there is nothing you can do about it. Blameoin users blame others for everything.

“That’s my incompetent boss’ fault!”

Blameoin allows its users to preserve their ego. Users don’t have to take responsibility for their actions. They can continue to believe they are perfect because everything is someone else’s fault.

Just like with other dangerous drugs, users feel better in the short term, but the drug slowly destroys their life. Every time they snort blameoin, they lose power to whoever or whatever they blamed. They make themselves powerless to improve the situation. If it’s your boss’ fault, what can you do about it? Your options are limited when trying to affect other people’s actions.

Your actions are the easiest ones to affect. Blameoin takes away your ability to control those actions.

“It’s the media!”

Instead of snorting blameoin, ask questions like:

  • Could I do my part any better next time?
  • What if I tried it this way instead of that way?
  • Is there another way to look at this that might offer different perspectives or insights?

Don’t confuse blame with fault. Taking responsibility for the things you can control does not necessarily mean you are at fault. The other person may have done something horribly wrong, unfair or even illegal, which sucks, but you can’t control that. Blaming others will always prevent you from having as much control of the situation as you potentially could. Taking responsibility for the aspects of the situation you can control does not let the wrong-doer off the hook for what they did, but it does give you the maximum possible amount of control over the situation.

“It’s because of the big corporate conglomerates!”

What if you had complete control of your life? What if you were totally in control of every aspect of your life? What if you could do exactly what you want and have everything you want, every single moment of your life?

As nice as that sounds, we will probably never have that level of control. We may not even want it. But the best way to have the greatest amount of influence on your life is to always take control of the things you can control. Taking control means never ever, ever blaming anyone else for anything.

“It’s the government!”

Look around the world. Look around and imagine that everything you want is yours for the taking if you just make the decision that you are going to do everything you can do to make your life exactly what you want it to be.

The next time something happens that you don’t like, don’t blame. Become obsessed with figuring out what you could have done to prevent it and what you can do to improve it now. Become obsessed with doing what you can do now and could do differently next time.

When trying to break an addiction to blameoin, withdrawal symptoms are normal. It means you are breaking your addiction to blameoin and on your way to getting whatever you want.

Warning: There are blameoin dealers everywhere. Unlike other drugs, blameoin is completely legal and its use is even encouraged by the highest levels of government. Nobody will ever get in trouble for selling you blameoin. Blameoin dealers are on television, on the Internet, in the newspaper, at coffee shops — even in your own home. Blameoin dealers want you to believe that someone else is controlling your life and there is nothing you can do about it; making it impossible for you to have what you want. Don’t buy it.
