Virgil Abloh has a new award under his belt.
The Louis Vuitton men’s artistic director’s book, “Virgil Abloh: Figures of Speech,” has won 2019 AIGA’s 50 Books Award, a competition that identifies the 50 best-designed books and book covers of the year.
The title, produced by Abloh and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, is in a three-books-in-one format, with a catalogue section by Michael Darling, who gives an overview of Abloh’s work, and features essays and interviews from Taiye Selasi, Rem Koolhaas and other experts in art, fashion, design and architecture. The book also has an archive section of more than 1,800 images from Abloh’s personal collection.
“Virgil Abloh: Figures of Speech” is a blue hardcover that features an image of Abloh holding a special edition copy of the book with a plain cover and the word “Artwork” across the top. The back cover has the name of the MCA Chicago exhibit from 2019 and the book’s ribbon marker is a gold measuring tape. In addition, the book is designed with Swiss binding to show the spine of the book and the raw boards that encase it. When opened, the front cover lays completely flat and is not attached to the

ANDRÉ ON DEMAND: After André Leon Talley kicked off a firestorm of publicity last week with his memoir “The Chiffon Trenches: A Memoir,” the book’s publisher Ballantine has moved up the release date to May 19 from September.
Originally slated to hit stores this week, last month the book’s debut was shelved until the fall due to the COVID-19 shutdown. Recent media coverage — much of which described in detail the great divide between Talley and his former boss Anna Wintour — upended that plan, after consumers’ interest ramped up. Copies of Talley’s tome had already been scheduled to be printed this month. A spokeswoman for Penguin Random House, of which Ballantine is a division, declined to comment about projected sales Tuesday.
Talley’s decades-long career in fashion also included volunteering at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, and posts at Women’s Wear Daily, Vanity Fair and Andy Warhol’s Factory. By his account, Talley has dealt with ageism, racism and weight discrimination. “People have done things to me that I have forgiven them for. There are things in the book that you can’t imagine — the racism, everything. You don’t even understand how much I’ve gone through to get to be 71

LINDBERGH’S EYE: Dior is celebrating its long-standing relationship with Peter Lindbergh with a two-volume book featuring a previously unseen shoot in Times Square involving a cast of top models and more than 80 outfits from the luxury house’s archives.
The photographer, who died last month at the age of 74, famously shot a series of Lady Dior campaigns with Marion Cotillard, including a memorable image of the French actress perched on top of the Eiffel Tower. Lindbergh also lensed a 2016 campaign for the J’adore Eau Lumière fragrance featuring Charlize Theron.
For his final project with Dior in October 2018, he enlisted the likes of Alek Wek, Karen Elson, Saskia de Brauw, Carolyn Murphy, Amber Valletta and Sasha Pivovarova to model vintage Dior creations against the bustling backdrop of New York City, mostly captured in his signature grainy black-and-white.

The images, gathered in volume one, show Wek mingling with the throng of pedestrians in outfits including a cream Bar jacket from 1947, or a 1997 silver lace pyramid-collared jacket and silver lamé skirt by John Galliano. Irina Shayk models an off-the-shoulder black gown designed by Gianfranco Ferré in 1991.

OUT OF THE SHADOWS: Fashion showgoers may know Nikolai von Bismarck as the boyfriend of Kate Moss. What many don’t realize is that he’s also an accomplished photographer — one who’s about to publish his first book in collaboration with Dior men’s artistic director Kim Jones.
“The Dior Sessions,” published by Rizzoli, charts Jones’ first year at Dior through more than 100 black-and-white portraits of his friends and colleagues. They include Moss and her daughter Lila Grace, A$ AP Rocky, Robert Pattinson, David Beckham, Demi Moore, Eddie Redmayne, Takashi Murakami and Jude Law.
Photographed on film over the course of 12 months and across three continents, the project acts like a snapshot of the era, Dior said in a statement.

“Simultaneously reflecting the present and respecting the past, it holds up a mirror to modern society’s multifaceted nature, in which creatives are multihyphenates and different media — music, fashion, film, art — cross-pollinate and intermingle free of hierarchy,” it said, drawing a parallel with Christian Dior’s relationships with artists.
Jones, meanwhile, described the sitters as “a diverse cross-section of people who do amazing things.”

Karl Lagerfeld’s most fantastical Chanel fashion show sets are the subject of the upcoming Rizzoli book “Lagerfeld: The Chanel Shows.”
A collection of images by English photographer Simon Procter, the book documents many of the late Chanel designer’s runways from the last 10 years, including his very last collection for the fall 2019 ready-to-wear season — shown at the Grand Palais, designed to resemble a snowy Alpine ski resort — two weeks after his death.

As Lagerfeld once stated, his set design ideas would come to him in his sleep. Procter’s images reflect the grandeur of these sets, including when the Grand Palais was transformed into a tropical beach, a 100-foot-high waterfall and a rocket ship, to name a few.
Procter also gives a behind-the-scenes look at many of Lagerfeld’s shows, documenting intimate moments between the designer and his model muses.
“I was lucky enough to meet him many times over the years; it was always a delight and we always did great work,” Procter writes in the book’s preface. “The two things I remember most were that he always personally greeted everyone in the room. The other, that he was very, very funny. Many times whoever was
