\David Bowie has released a two-minute preview of his upcoming track “Blackstar.” The extended teaser is the title track to his upcoming 25th album and the theme to the new TV series The Last Panthers. “I showed Mr. Bowie the two first episodes in the rough state they were in at the time, and he liked what he saw very much,” The Last Panthers director Johan Renck said. According to reports, David Bowie will release a new album entitled Blackstar on January 8. The Times notes that the LP contains seven songs which clock in at 45 minutes and “may well be the oddest work yet” from the Thin White Duke. David Bowie has written a song for an upcoming French-British crime series, in the rock icon's first foray into television music in two decades. Bowie in a statement Tuesday said that he had written an original song for "The Last Panthers," a six-part thriller on Balkan jewel thieves that debuts in November. "I was looking for one of the icons of my youth to write the music for the title sequence, but was presented with a God," director Johan Renck, a Swede best known for his music videos, said in the statement.
David Bowie, known for the intellectual bent of his music, is penning music for what will likely be lighter fare — a musical based on cartoon character SpongeBob. Chicago's Oriental Theatre announced that the English rock icon and artist is leading an array of top musicians in composing the score for "SpongeBob The Musical" which will premiere there on June 7 next year. Other musicians who will contribute material include The Flaming Lips and They Might Be Giants, two US bands with similarly eclectic interests, as well as 1980s pop superstar Cyndi Lauper, members of hard rock legends Aerosmith and singer-songwriter John Legend.
David Bowie has released a version of “Holy Holy,” one that has been unavailable since 1971, when it was released as a single. The cut is a preview off Bowie’s massive upcoming box set Five Years 1969-1973. Dexter star Michael C. Hall will star as Thomas Newton in Lazarus this winter, a role famously played by David Bowie. The off-Broadway production is co-written by Bowie and playwright Enda Walsh (Once) and is based on Walter Tevis‘ classic 1963 sci-fi novel The Man Who Fell to Earth. David Bowie may be planning to hit the studio for a new album soon, according to Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller. The television exec let the news slip during a recent interview with the blog Den of Geek after he was asked if Bowie would ever make an appearance on his show.
