Sports News in Brief: Luke Kuechly Undergoes Quick Brain Arthroscopy To Clean Up Cerebral Cortex
CHARLOTTE, NC—After suffering a concussion that sidelined him against the Jacksonville Jaguars last weekend, the Carolina Panthers announced Thursday that All-Pro linebacker Luke Kuechly has undergone a quick brain arthroscopy in order to clean up his cerebral cortex. “Earlier today, we successfully scoped Luke’s brain and removed some buildup of tissue that had been accumulating in there,” said team doctor Donald Randolph, explaining that several small incisions were made in Kuechly’s forehead to allow surgeons to go into his cerebrum and remove loose tissue and bone fragments, as well as shave away the worn areas of his frontal and temporal lobes. “There was actually quite a bit of fluid inside Luke’s skull that had to be drained, and hopefully that will alleviate some discomfort. And as long as he continually ices it for the next 24 to 48 hours, the swelling in his head should be …

Build a Habit-Robot in your Brain
Did you hear about a book that is designed to put little kids to sleep when parents read it aloud?
The book uses words that act on the subconscious to make kids sleepy. Is that possible, you ask the trained hypnotist writing this post?
Yup.
I don’t know if the author executed the concept well, but the idea is well within the range of things I have seen in person. Kids are highly suggestible.
Luckily we grow out of it. By the time we are adults we can use our powers of reason to fend off the many influences coming at us from all directions. Using all the mental tools of adulthood plus our education and experience, we are able to build a mental fortress around our…
Just kidding.
We never build a defense. Words reprogram adults just as easily as kids. Donald Trump teaches us that every day. And if you want to take a desk nap, I can put you to sleep just as fast as that book for kids. But I won’t. You have things to do.
We humans think of ourselves as single entities because our bodies make each of us look like one person. I tried to maintain that illusion for most of my life and have finally released it. Now I accept that I am lots of personalities and I cycle through them during the day according to a schedule I do not set. When my body chemistry makes me confident and ambitious, I’m that guy. When my body chemistry goes in another direction, I’m another person for awhile. But those personalities are the average of what is going on in my mind at any time. And thinking of myself as the average of my mind’s competing forces was not useful to me.
My current model for what I call my “self” is that my mind is like a riot at an insane asylum. Luckily, one of the inmates was wrongly committed. That guy has the job of trying to get the real lunatics under control before the body that supports all of them does something dumb.
In my model, if the other patients are calm, the lone voice of reason can dominate the situation. It knows how to avoid the more dangerous patients and coerce the gullible ones. It makes deals. It builds alliances. It does what it can to assert itself as the only sane voice in a building full of irrational actors.
But that only works when the other patients are relatively calm. If any of them gets worked up, they are larger than the tiny rational voice and overpower it.
Where some of you see free will in this scenario, I see math. If the crazy players in my head outnumber the rational part of my mind, they win. Sometimes my rational mind uses judo-like tricks to fight above its weight class, but it is still one player in a building full of lunatics. It can’t win them all.
(Yeah, I know this sounds like an animated movie you recently saw. That’s an “anchor” I could not avoid. It just dragged your attention somewhere I don’t want it to go and slowed the flow of my post. See how hypnosis considerations are woven into writing? This is just one example.)
The insane asylum model of the mind has some advantages. In my old mental model, any form of stress felt as if all of me was having a mental problem. Now I see it as one of my fellow patients going on a rampage. I need to sedate him.
So my rational player does what it knows to do. In preparation for future riots that I know are coming, I have moved to habit (via repetition and reward) my exercise routine. If my rational mind needs to activate the habit subroutine, it can do so with a whistle even if it is already under a dog pile of crazy actors. Habits are like robot warriors that the rational part can order into combat. I activate the exercise habit-robot and try to hold off the rioting crazies until…
I go to the gym. Happy chemicals flow into my body. I stab a sedative into the biggest nut on top of me and push him off.
Lesson 1: You can’t exercise-away real problems. But most of what stresses you might not be that big. Exercise is one way to sedate the lunatic on top of you.
Lesson 2: You need a robot army in your brain to help your rational player when the crazy parts of your mind start to riot. You can build your robots as “habits” so you can call upon them when needed.
Your tiny rational voice might not have the power to overcome a hospital full of lunatics. But your robot army (the habits you engineered) can dispatch them easily.
Get yourself some mental robots by building habits.
I am putting together a reading list for people who are interested in persuasion as a craft. This book on forming habits will be one of the most important ones on the list. Think of it as a way to arm the rational part of your brain to fight off the crazy parts.
And obviously if you want to see more about the Moist Robot view of the world, you need to read my book. That will be on the list too.

Vice President’s Son Beau Biden Dies Of Brain Cancer
Extremely sad news has trickled from out of the White House. Beau Bide, the son of Vice President Joe Biden has passed away at the age of 46 after a battle with brain cancer.
The VP released a statement obtained by the Washington Post:
It is with broken hearts that Hallie, Hunter, Ashley, Jill and I announce the passing of our husband, brother and son, Beau, after he battled brain cancer with the same integrity, courage and strength he demonstrated every day of his life.
The entire Biden family is saddened beyond words. We know that Beau’s spirit will live on in all of us—especially through his brave wife, Hallie, and two remarkable children, Natalie and Hunter.
Beau’s life was defined by service to others. As a young lawyer, he worked to establish the rule of law in war-torn Kosovo. A major in the Delaware National Guard, he was an Iraq War veteran and was awarded the Bronze Star. As Delaware’s Attorney General, he fought for the powerless and made it his mission to protect children from abuse.
More than his professional accomplishments, Beau measured himself as a husband, father, son and brother. His absolute honor made him a role model for our family. Beau embodied my father’s saying that a parent knows success when his child turns out better than he did.
In the words of the Biden family: Beau Biden was, quite simply, the finest man any of us have ever known.
President Obama also followed suit by releasing a heartfelt statement of his own.

Cop Punched By The Game Now Claiming Brain Damage
The Game’s haymaker hands have inserted themselves in a “mo money, money problems situation” stemming from his videotaped technical foul on March 29.
Last week, it was revealed that it was an off-duty police officer who was on the receiving end of the Compton rapper’s fists of fury during an organized basketball game.
Now that cop, Onyebuchi Awaji, is putting his alleged injuries with a dollar amount. You all know how it goes.
Reports TMZ:
The Game is being sued for that punch he threw last month during a basketball game … a punch the victim says may have screwed up his brain.
According to a lawsuit filed Monday, Onyebuchi Awaji — an off-duty rookie cop — claims he did nothing to instigate the March 29th fight with Game.
Awaji claims Game nailed him with a sucker punch that may have caused brain damage.
Not only did Awaji claim Game sucker punched him, he says Game fled the scene as soon as he heard cops were called.
At the time of the fight, sources close to Game told TMZ Game threw the punch out of self-defense, claiming Awaji verbally threatened Game with a gun.

Our Brain Is Wired To Move On After Heartbreak, Study Says
We know that humans are wired to fall in love, but are we also built to break up?
Love is what evolutionary psychologists call a human universal — a fundamental human experience that appears across all cultures. According to a new study, the experience of falling out of love and moving on to a new partner may be just as universal.
A recent review of evolutionary psychology literature, conducted by researchers at Saint Louis University, Florida State University and the University of Cincinnati, suggests that humans are built to experience the pain of a breakup and then move on to a new partner, and that our brains actually facilitate the severing of romantic ties.
The researchers explain that the ability to endure heartbreak and ultimately enter a new relationship may have offered an evolutionary advantage.
“In our evolutionary past, selection pressures may have been such that individuals who could successfully jettison a mate and find a new one, when the situation called for it, would have been better able to solve the evolutionary imperative of reproduction — in other words, they sent more of their genes on to the next generation,” Dr. Brian Boutwell, an epidemiologist at Saint Louis University and the study’s lead author, told The Huffington Post.
Boutwell and his colleagues looked at the process of falling out of love and ending a relationship (what they call “primary mate ejection”) and the process of entering a new relationship (“secondary mate ejection”). Drawing on research showing that the brain circuitry involved in romantic love is also implicated in addictive behaviors, they hypothesized that falling out of love and moving on is a process akin to overcoming a drug addiction. And of course, those who are able to do so successfully have better survival and reproductive odds.
The findings also show that while both men and women fall out of love and move on to new romantic relationships, they are likely motivated to break up for different reasons.
“Males would be especially likely to jettison a mate when they expect that a partner has been sexually unfaithful,” Boutwell said in an email. “Females, on the other hand, would be expected to jettison a mate when they have become unable (or unwilling) to provide resources and to ensure the survival and safety of the female and her offspring.”
So what does this say about monogamy? The study suggests that humans are indeed wired to be with just one person — but not necessarily for a lifetime.
“Humans are (generally speaking) serial monogamists,” Boutwell said. “We virtually never mate for life with one partner, so mate ejection provides a mechanism for moving between partners when that becomes necessary.”
The findings were published March 2 in the journal Review of General Psychology.

These 3D Gifs Will Turn Your Brain Inside Out
We have news for you: The GIFs of old are dead. Like, really, really dead.
They’ve been killed by the unequivocal coolness of split-depth GIFs — optical illusion creations that use white space as a reference point to create mind-boggling depth within GIF animations. No 3D glasses necessary.
With Photoshop and a great deal of patience, GIF creators add white bars and borders to their animations, going frame by frame to conceal and reveal different parts of the image in reference to the blank space.
Reddit user drinkmorecoffee, creator of the penguin GIF below, told The Huffington Post the process is typically “all about masking the frames so they appear to be behind a specific object in the frame, thus making that object appear to jump off the screen.”
It’s time-consuming, surely, but the results are epic. Please accept our apologies in advance for melting your brain.

This Optical Illusion Will Make Your Eyes Bulge And Your Brain Burst
This article originally appeared on Slate.
By Phil Plait
I love optical illusions, especially ones where you know what your eyes are telling your brain is wrong, but you can’t seem to get your brain to see that.

The famous Checkerboard Illusion is a great example of this. Look at it: You know it’s an illusion, and you just know those squares are straight—their borderlines all parallel and perpendicular—but you can’t get your dumb brain to ignore your lying eyes.
Cory Albrecht made a great page for this, with a slider bar that shows you the board with and without the dots, so that you can see for yourself the lines are all straight. Even then, the board looks all bulgy. Amazing.
The illusion itself is attributed to Akiyoshi Kitaoka (the creator of what I consider the single greatest illusion of all time), but what causes it?
Sebastiaan Mathôt, writing at the CogSci website, talks about the margins, the distance between the dots and the edges of the similarly-colored squares.* The dots don’t actually touch the border; they’re inset a bit, leaving a margin. He speculates our brains interpret these margins as lines, skewing our perception, changing the apparent angle of intersection of the square borders. Instead of all right angles, some apparently becoming acute, some obtuse.
Certainly the arrangement of the dots is crucial. At the center the squares seem to bulge outward, and it has two black dots flanking each of its four its vertices. But closer to the edge the lines look slanted, and the dots are arranged differently (black squares have a pair of white dots in opposite corners, and vice-versa). On the left is a 3×3 crop of the upper right part of the board; see how the vertical lines appear to slant left? (It may help to look a bit to the side of the picture to see it, oddly.) The dots are arranged differently there.

This may be a variation of the Hering Illusion, where parallel lines are distorted when placed over lines radiating from a point. If so, it could have something to do with how we perceive distances, since the Hering Illusion relies on perspective based on the vanishing point. Interestingly, this means it could be related to the Moon Illusion, where the Moon looks bigger on the horizon than overhead! It also relies on our brain getting confused about distance.
Obviously, using Albrecht’s slider, you can see the dots are important. But the margins? I’m not sure. I thought of a way to test this: The margins are very thin, thinner than the dots themselves. If I move away from the monitor, at some point I’ll get far enough away that my eyes won’t see the thin margins any more, but I’ll still see the dots. If the illusion vanishes (I see the squares being square) then the margins are important. If not, then it may be due to the dots themselves.
I shrank the image down to make the distances manageable and tried it out. To my surprise, the illusion persisted even when I couldn’t see the margins (about a meter or so away from my monitor). I could still see the dots though.
Hmmm. I backed up farther. At about two meters away the dots blurred too much for me to see them against the squares … and the illusion vanished. This makes me think it’s the dots themselves governing this illusion. Try it!
I think it might have more to do with our brains trying to connect the oppositely colored dots themselves, and getting tricked by the dots around them. But, to be honest, I can’t be sure.

Interestingly, when I shrank the image down the illusion got far stronger! I placed the shrunken version here; to me, the lines appear far more curved, and I had to hold up a straightedge to them to convince myself the image processing routine I was using (Gimp) didn’t distort the field. Test it for yourself: The lines are still straight. Incredible.
But why? I’m not sure. I suspect it has to do with more of the smaller squares fitting into your central field of view; some illusions depend on where in your field of view things happen. That would be consistent with the idea that when you look at a small section of the board, it’s the surrounding dots that warp the lines. You can see them more easily in the smaller version.
In the end, I don’t think a lot is understood about the specifics of this illusion. That in itself is pretty cool! That means there’s more to learn.
And in the end, this illusion shows us something I’ve said over and over on this blog: Seeing should not be believing! What you see is never really what’s going on; there are a whole series of things going on between your eyes and your brain that distort reality.
How many times have you heard someone say, “I know what I saw”? I always smile ruefully when I hear that. They think they know what they saw. But what may have really happened may be far, far different.
