Thom Browne Hits Back at Accusations He Copied London Artist

CHOPPY WATERS: Thom Browne has responded to allegations from a Central Saint Martins fine arts student that the designer has copied the student’s work.
Ashton Attzs, who won the Evening Standard Art Prize last year, said in an Instagram post that the New York-based designer copied an original artwork depicting figures of different races swimming in lanes in a sea of blue.
“This is a blatant copy of my painting ‘Don’t Stay in Ya Lane.’ Absolutely disgusted, hurt and fuming that this has happened,” the artist wrote in an Instagram post. “Can high-profile fashion houses actually start being original rather than stealing ideas from queer, black young artists?”
Attzs was awarded the Evening Standard Art Prize in November for “Don’t Stay in Ya Lane,” which the newspaper said was created as part of a larger body of work begun in January 2018. The London paper said the work was selected from more than 1,000 entries to pick up the 10,000 pound prize, and advocates for the empowerment of LGBTQ+ community, people of color and those with intersectional identities.
A spokesman for Browne, a keen swimmer, said in a statement Monday the print in question was developed from January to March 2018 as a part of the

Thom Browne Attends First Ermenegildo Zegna Show

FAST FRIENDS: “He’s my new best friend, I love our friendship,” gushed Thom Browne of Gildo Zegna, chief executive officer of the Ermenegildo Zegna Group. Although his own show is slated for Paris next week, the designer took the time to fly to Milan to show his support for Zegna, which took a majority stake in Thom Browne Inc. at the end last August. While Browne demurred from detailing any specific future plan for the brand, he said there will be “a lot more stores opening in the next couple of years.”
In a sign of Zegna’s pull in China, Hong Kong singer and actor William Chan Wai-ting attended the show, flanked by, among others, the brand’s longtime friend, actor Daniel Brühl; model Winnie Harlow, who snapped photos of the looks throughout the show, and American actor McCaul Lombardi, who fronted Zegna’s advertising campaign with Robert De Niro in 2017. Michele Norsa, vice chairman of Missoni, was also at the show, having joined the board of Zegna in 2017.

Thom Browne RTW Spring 2018

Thom Browne designed to his Paris moment. “When I thought of doing my first show here, I wanted to celebrate what, in my mind, Paris fashion is all about — the craftsmanship of couture,” he said during a preview.
Browne called his vision of couture “almost childlike,” one represented for spring in a single word: tulle. He thus devised a personal creative challenge: to taking the classic American fabrics he loves – madras, seersucker, checks – and re-create them in a collection made almost entirely of tulle. “Especially for the first show, I wanted a real celebration of the culture of fashion in Paris,” he said. “But then, to make sure that people saw the true connection to what I’ve been doing.”
What this man did with tulle was staggering. In paying homage to couture, he created couture — a collection that would have shown as brilliantly in July as it did on Tuesday at the Hotel de Ville. The mastery of these clothes was beyond, the fabric development remarkable. Imagine a trim madras jacket that looks like real thing, but woven with painstaking precision from strips of tulle. Or a cricket jacket, its half-“exploded,” half-shaved tulle configuration mocking the conservatism of the real thing. Or

Thom Browne Next Up for Colette Takeover

It’s Thom Browne’s turn to put his stamp on Colette in the store’s run-up to its December closing. When Browne’s monthlong installation opens Oct. 2, it will be the fourth in the store’s series of designer takeovers. Browne will transform the second floor into his polished American office-like world, done in gray and set with midcentury furnishings.
“I’ll always remember the first time I met Thom in his Meatpacking District studio more than 10 years ago,” said Sarah Andelman, the store’s creative director and purchasing manager, and daughter of the founder. “I remember the way he welcomed me with a glass of morning Champagne and the way his small shirt collection was just perfect. His vision for men’s wear was crystal clear. Each of his fashion shows has offered the most impressive experience, confirming Thom not only as a fashion designer but a real artist.”
The more than 200 exclusive products, spanning men’s, women’s and children’s, will include runway pieces, updated bestsellers and new categories — denim, home, kids and Americana-inspired novelty items. There will also be a made-to-measure area where customers can personalize and custom fit their tailoring with tailors from Browne’s New York store. It’s the first time custom tailoring will be

Thom Browne Sets Arty Pop-up at Le Bon Marché

PARIS – Thom Browne has brought his theatrical flair to Paris with a striking and arty installation for his new, temporary sales space at French department store Le Bon Marché.
“I wanted this [pop-up] to be more like a representation of what shows are nowadays: half installations, half collections,” the New York-based designer explained during a preview. “And I wanted it to be representative of what I do [vis-à-vis] those people who don’t know who I am.”
Visitors enter through a dramatically mirrored office space, featuring a silver-plated, mid-century desk (Browne’s favorite period), an old-fashioned typewriter, a pencil, a ruler, a stapler and a pair of scissors neatly arranged on its top, and surrounded by a sea of matching brogues replicated ad infinitum by the mirrored walls, feeding into Browne’s penchant for uniform, repetitive design.
The installation is an amalgam of Browne’s work over the last decade, including his movielike 2009 show as Pitti Uomo’s guest designer, which brought to mind the tyranny of modernist work ethics, as well as last July’s “runway” show aptly labeled “The Office Man.”
“Unofficially, we call this ‘The Office Man II,’” smiled Browne, clad in one of his signature shrunken Bermuda suits boasting white and blue seersucker stripes.

Thom Browne Men’s RTW Spring 2016

Men playing female roles is a theatrical tradition dating back to the Ancient Greeks. And so Thom Browne’s decision to dress four of his models as geishas felt particularly relevant at a time when the conversation about men’s wear is homing in on gender conventions.
Guests arriving at the venue, a warehouse on the outskirts of Paris, were greeted by a static display of models in kimono-sleeved coats draped over wooden crosses like scarecrows. As discomfiting as it was, the setup allowed the audience to admire up close ornate fabrics with details such as embroidered koi and sheered mink appliqué.
What followed was as much a performance as a fashion show. To the melancholic strains of Yo-Yo Ma playing Ennio Morricone film scores, the geisha figures, distinguished by elaborate headdresses, painstakingly unbuttoned each coat and released the men inside.
Wearing Klaus Nomi makeup and small, round glasses, the models hobbled on wooden geta sandals dressed in gray suits and coats with intricate Japanese-inspired motifs. Panels of pinstripe, houndstooth, herringbone and seersucker were assembled into designs including flowers, fish and cranes.
With his hybrid of sartorial and decorative traditions, Browne is yet another voice helping to expand the male repertoire.
