Home Is Calling for Young Chinese Designers

SHANGHAI — As Champagne glasses clinked and heads of industry assembled at The Woolmark Co.’s gala in October to celebrate 50 years of trade with China, six of the country’s most successful designers presented their capsule collections made with Australian merino wool. During the event, the designers were periodically called for press photos, interviews and business introductions, yet between these obligations, they gravitated back to one another, sharing pats on the back, chats and inside jokes.
Perhaps it isn’t surprising that in the emerging pool of contemporary Chinese designers, there is camaraderie and familiarity among the biggest players. The kinship could also be down to the fact that many of them have studied at the same overseas colleges, shared the same manufacturers and suppliers, and worked in the same studios as their careers advanced.
Although many of these successful young Chinese designers studied their craft overseas — this cohort particularly favoring Central Saint Martins in London, many are now returning home to China to set up or promote their labels as the market in their homeland matures.
There is a mix of reasons why this moment in time offers a unique and exciting opportunity for Chinese designers to return home. As the nation’s economy continues

EXCLUSIVE: Model Christopher Cates Pens Letter Calling for Action Against Harassment

As the uproar continues over sexual harassment in industries stretching from entertainment to media to finance, the fashion world has remained relatively on the sidelines – until now.
On Saturday, The New York Times published a long-rumored story about alleged harassment of male models by the photographers Bruce Weber and Mario Testino. Both men, via statements their lawyers gave to the Times, vigorously denied the allegations made in the story, although Conde Nast and Conde Nast International both said Saturday that they would be severing ties with the two photographers – at least for now.
The Times’ story comes several months after model Cameron Russell created an Instagram account on which anonymous individuals posted stories about their mistreatment in the industry. Last October, Terry Richardson was dropped by the leading fashion magazine publishers but only after years of allegations surrounding his behavior, while model Jason Boyce filed a lawsuit against Weber in December claiming the photographer harassed him. Weber has denied those claims, as well.
In November, 27-year-old British model Edie Campbell penned an exclusive letter for WWD to the fashion industry in which she said, “We operate within a culture that is too accepting of abuse, in all of its manifestations,” going

Calling Jimmy from the Third Dimension

Have you ever randomly turned on your television and discovered that the topic was you? I have, several times. It’s a freaky experience. The whole world becomes tiny for an instant – so small that it all fits in your living room – then it slowly expands to where it was.

Anyway, some friends saw me taking a walk last night and alerted me that I was mentioned on The Tonight Show. It was easy to find the quote on Google. I’m glad I didn’t see it live because of the freakiness factor. Here it is:

“The creator of Dilbert predicted that Trump will win the presidency and also compared him to Jesus. And people hope he’s right because they would love a three-day break from Donald Trump.” – The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.

In two-dimensional chess, both Trump and I have been dismissed in cartoon fashion in service of the joke. And that’s fair. We’re all professionals. I’m sure the joke succeeded with the audience. Viewed from the perspective of the two-dimensional world, some might say I am diminished in some small way because the Jesus reference is intentionally used out of context to make me look foolish. That would be bad.

But in the third dimension, where I live and work, associations matter more than reason. And Jimmy Fallon referred to me as “the creator” in the same sentence with Jesus and the next President of the United States.

Trade-off accepted.

How was your day?

Lyor Cohen Responds To Dame Dash Calling Him A “Culture Vulture”

(AllHipHop News) Last year Roc-A-Fella Records co-founder Dame Dash was on a personal mission to call out individuals in the music business he believed to be “culture vultures.” Dame’s list of people he accused of using Hip Hop simply for profit included Lyor Cohen, the former head of Def Jam Recordings.

[ALSO READ: Dame Dash: Lyor Cohen Stop Trying To Rape My Culture (VIDEO)]

“I want him to stop trying to rape my culture. Go make some money with some other people,” Dame said at the time. “Stop having your agenda be Hip Hop.”

The business mogul also claimed Cohen was the cause of the fall of Roc-A-Fella. Dame challenged the media to question him and other label heads such as Kevin Liles, Julie Greenwald, and Todd Moscowitz about their roles in changing Hip Hop.

The longtime industry insider has finally given a rare interview. Cohen was a guest on the Rap Radar podcast, and the current 300 Entertainment (Fetty Wap, Young Thug) executive addressed Dame referring to him as a “culture vulture.”

Cohen said:

It actually doesn’t bother me. It would bother me if it came from a credible source. If it’s a credible source, then we can have a conversation and actually have a discussion. If someone thinks something about me that I may have done to offend them or hurt them or do something they misunderstand, then we’ll have a dialogue. We’ll communicate and get to an understanding and move on, or not. But I can’t give any light to that. It’s a clown right now.

NYPD Officer Under Investigation, Accused Of Calling Woman A ‘F**king Dyke’ Before Assaulting Her

An NYPD officer is under investigation for a possible hate crime after a Brooklyn woman accused him of assaulting her and calling her homophobic slurs, a spokeswoman for the Brooklyn district attorney’s office told The Huffington Post Thursday.

Stephanie Dorceant, 29, was arrested in the early morning hours of July 11 in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn after allegedly assaulting NYPD Officer Salvator Aquino. She’s facing felony charges of assault as well as charges for menacing, resisting arrest and harassment.

But according to Dorceant, it was Aquino who attacked her. Through her attorneys, she supplied the following statement Thursday:

On July 11th I was in Brooklyn, where I live and work, heading from a concert with my girlfriend when, out of nowhere a large man bumped me from behind. I asked him if he was ok. He then barked at me, and I will quote: “mind your own business you fucking dyke.”

Hen then attacked me, punched me in the face a number of times, choked me and called me several more anti-gay slurs. When he had his hands around my neck I truly thought I was going to die. I could not breathe. The only way I could get him to stop attacking me and my girlfriend was to bite him.

When other police officers showed up I thought we were saved. That was not the case. It turned out that this man was an off-duty police officer. Instead of helping me and my girlfriend and arresting our attacker, more officers piled on top of me, slamming me onto the pavement and putting their knees on my neck, shoulders, and back. They then put us both into handcuffs and threw us into a holding cell in the precinct. After being processed at the precinct I was taken to the hospital, and then to central bookings.

At my arraignment, they said that I had assaulted the cop and that I had used racial slurs. Even though I have no record, and their story was a complete lie, bail was set and I ended up at Riker’s Island.

My attacker has still not been charged or arrested.

Even though I am well aware of the many stories about police brutality, especially against blacks, Hispanics, and the LGBT community, I never really thought that this could happen to me. I want to share my story and say that police brutality is a real thing. Hate crimes are a real thing. Both of these things happened to me. Enough is enough.

The criminal complaint against Dorceant — which is embedded below — alleges that Aquino saw Dorceant and her girlfriend, Nandi Allman, “arguing” as he was walking to his personal car that had “a police parking plaque displayed on the dashboard and in area marked for police vehicles only.” When Dorceant and Aquino bumped into each other, the complaint alleges, Dorceant attacked Aquino and “punched him in the face.” When he tried to arrest Dorceant she resisted and “proceeded to bite [Aquino] repeatedly about the arms, chest, finger, and torso, breaking [Aquino’s] skin.”

At a press conference Thursday, Dorceant said the criminal complaint was nothing but lies as she held Allman’s hand and occasionally choked back tears. The couple weren’t arguing on Saturday, she said, but were “talking and laughing” coming back from a performance at the AfroPunk Battle of the Bands in Brooklyn.

When Allman saw Aquino throw her girlfriend’s head to the ground she thought Dorceant was “going to die,” Allman said.

Both women are small and would have posed no threat to the officer, said Dorceant’s lawyer, Benjamin Zeman.

What’s more, during the altercation with Aquino, “not at one point did he mention he was a cop,” Dorceant said. “I didn’t see a badge, gun, anything,” she said.

(Dorceant’s lawyers said the Brooklyn district attorney’s office has since confirmed that Aquino was off duty at the time of the incident.)

Aquino identified himself as a police officer just before a group of uniformed officers arrived on the scene, Dorceant said. He then handcuffed her and her girlfriend. Dorceant was taken to the 63rd precinct and then to the hospital. Doctors told her she had muscle bruising, cuts, scrapes, head trauma and an eye injury, which Dorceant said she received from being thrown to the ground. She was then taken to Brooklyn Central Booking.

During the arraignment in court Saturday, according to Dorceant, prosecutors read aloud a statement from Aquino saying he was concerned he “might have HIV” from her bites. (She has since taken an HIV test; the results were negative, she said Thursday.)

After the arraignment, Dorceant spent an entire day in jail on Rikers Island before Allman was able to pay the $ 1,000 bail. She was released on Monday, having been detained for over two days.

“They never gave me my phone call that I was promised,” Dorceant said. “I didn’t know what time it was. I barely knew what day it was. I was stuck into a room with 50 other girls. It was honestly like living in a concentration camp. I would never wish that on my worst enemy.”

The whole ordeal was “like a nightmare,” she said.

The NYPD’s internal affairs department said it has launched an investigation into the incident to determine if any disciplinary action is warranted.

The Patrolmen’s Benevolent Association — the union that represents New York City’s police officers — didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.

On Thursday a judge ruled that prosecutors have until January to convene a grand jury and indict Dorceant. If they don’t, the charges against her will be dismissed.

Benjamin Moore, another attorney for Dorceant, said he is “confident” the charges against her will be dropped before then.

Dorceant and Allman believe Aquino should “absolutely” be charged with a hate crime. They plan to bring civil charges somewhere down the line, they said.

Separately, the civil rights bureau of the Brooklyn district attorney’s office is investigating the incident as a possible hate crime and interviewed Dorceant on Saturday, a spokeswoman said.

In the meantime, a friend of the couple’s has started a crowdfunding page to pay for Dorceant’s legal fees. As of Thursday evening, the campaign has raised more than $ 1,700 towards the $ 8,000 goal.

George Takei Apologizes For Calling Clarence Thomas A ‘Clown In Blackface’

George Takei has apologized for referring to Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas as “a clown in blackface.”

In a Facebook update posted on Friday afternoon, Takei said, “I owe an apology. On the eve of this Independence Day, I have a renewed sense of what this country stands for, and how I personally could help achieve it.”

On Thursday the Star Trek actor, who is gay, came under fire when he told a reporter he disapproved of Thomas’ dissent on the high court’s landmark same-sex marriage case.

“He is a clown in blackface sitting on the Supreme Court,” a jolted Takei said. “He gets me that angry. He doesn’t belong there.”

Watch the interview:

On June 26, the Supreme Court ruled 5 to 4 to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide, overruling state attempts to ban such unions.

The majority opinion, written by the court’s liberal justices Anthony Kennedy, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan, Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor, determined that the right to marry is protected under the 14th Amendment.

The dissenters — Chief Justice John Roberts, joined by Justices Antonin Scalia, Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas — disagreed, calling it unconstitutional.

Penning his own scathing dissent, Thomas wrote that the government could not take away “human dignity.”

“Slaves did not lose their dignity (any more than they lost their humanity) because the government allowed them to be enslaved,” Thomas wrote. “Those held in internment camps did not lose their dignity because the government confined them.”

This hit a cord with Takei, whose family was interned by Americans during World War II. Takei clarified that his remarks about Thomas, who is black, were not meant to be racial.

I recently was asked by a reporter about Justice Clarence Thomas’s dissent in the marriage equality cases, in which he wrote words that really got under my skin, by suggesting that the government cannot take away human dignity through slavery, or though internment. In my mind that suggested that this meant he felt the government therefore shouldn’t be held accountable, or should do nothing in the face of gross violations of dignity. When asked by a reporter about the opinion, I was still seething, and I referred to him as a “clown in blackface” to suggest that he had abdicated and abandoned his heritage. This was not intended to be racist, but rather to evoke a history of racism in the theatrical arts. While I continue to vehemently disagree with Justice Thomas, the words I chose, said in the heat of anger, were not carefully considered.

Takei apologized for personally attacking Thomas instead of the content of his argument:

I am reminded, especially on this July 4th holiday, that though we have the freedom to speak our minds, we must use that freedom judiciously. Each of us, as humans, have hot-button topics that can set-us off, and Justice Thomas had hit mine, that is clear. But my choice of words was regrettable, not because I do not believe Justice Thomas is deeply wrong, but because they were ad hominem and uncivil, and for that I am sorry.

Texas Teacher Fired After Calling For Segregation Over McKinney Incident

A self-proclaimed non-racist teacher for Bennett Elementary School in Lubbock, Texas is now out of a job after she her very racist Facebook post stemming from the McKinney pool party incident went viral.

Late Wednesday evening, Karen Fitzgibbons voiced her displeasure for the brutality tactics of Eric Casebolt against unarmed teenage girls resulting in his resignation.

She wrote:

“I’m going to just go ahead and say it … the blacks are the ones causing the problems and this ‘racial tension.’ I guess that’s what happens when you flunk out of school and have no education. I’m sure their parents are just as guilty for not knowing what their kids were doing; or knew it and didn’t care. I’m almost to the point of wanting them all segregated on one side of town so they can hurt each other and leave the innocent people alone. Maybe the 50s and 60s were really on to something. Now, let the bashing of my true and honest opinion begin….GO! #imnotracist #imsickofthemcausingtrouble #itwasatagedcommunity,” the Facebook post stated.

Fitzgibbons tells the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal that the rant “was not directed at any one person or group,” but her employer, Frenship ISD, knew better than to keep her employed. She was immediately terminated.

“Frenship ISD is deeply disappointed in the thoughtlessness conveyed by this employee’s post,” their statement read. “We find these statements to be extremely offensive, insensitive, and disrespectful to our Frenship community and citizens everywhere. These comments in no way represent the educational environment we have created for our students.”

“The employee whose account is responsible for the post will be relieved of her teaching duties at Frenship ISD.”

Fitzgibbons was employed at Frenship ISD for 16 out of her 20 years of teaching. See the Frenship ISD statement and the terminated teacher’s racist Facebook post for your own two eyes on the next couple of pages.

Even Game of Thrones Can’t Stop Calling Jon Snow “Pretty”

game of thrones jon snow

In a recent interview, Kit Harington reminded us, once again, that he’s more than just a pretty face. “I dislike the word ‘hunk,’” he said. “It’s a fucking ridiculous thing to be referred to as. It’s like calling a girl a ‘babe.’ It’s frankly offensive.”

This isn’t the first time Harington has raged against his “hunk status.” In March, he told Page Six that being reduced to a heartthrob is “slightly demeaning.” “I’m in a successful TV show in a kind of leading man way and it can sometimes feel like your art is being put to one side for your sex appeal. And I don’t like that.”

And yet, viewers cannot contain their lust for Jon Snow. (Even Zadie Smith is guilty of it!) But the guiltiest party of all? Game of Thrones. More than most of the females on the HBO show, the newly minted Lord Commander is always being called out for his beauty. In the most recent episode alone, he was called “pretty” twice. Below, all the times that Jon Snow was objectified for his looks on Game of Thrones.

This Spring’s Literary Subject May Have You Calling Your Pals

Roger Schall Vogue Photograph

My first best friend—I’ll call her Katie—was adorable, with dimples and two long braids with ribbons on them, like little girls in fairy tales. I, meanwhile, resembled a miniature accountant, with cropped hair, glasses, and a host of anxious tics. Katie had looks and charm, in other words, while I, the most insufferable of kindergarten know-it-alls, had something else: the correct answer. “She’s always right!” I remember hearing her complain to her mother in the next room, to which her mother replied consolingly: “That’s OK, because you’re prettier than she is, and one day, that’ll be more important.”

You are this; I am that. For years, we were pretty much content with the terms of our friendship, which seemed equitable and fixed. But with puberty and high school came a newfound social complexity, and neither of us could find a way to revise them. Katie was no longer the cutest girl in school; I no longer had all the answers. There were so many other potential selves to explore.

It was while reading Elena Ferrantes Neapolitan novels that I thought of Katie, and of the way in which friendship, once relegated to the domain of chick lit and young adult novels and buddy comedies, has been gaining fresh and welcome literary attention. In summarizing the plot of Ferrante’s My Brilliant Friend—two friends growing up in a gritty neighborhood in Naples after the second World War—I thought how slight the word “friend” felt, and how overdue for revised understanding. Friends not only remind us of who we are, but who we might have become.

Until recently, portraits of intensely formative, Lila and Lenù–style bonds have felt rare and luminous. Think of the fierce alliances in Mary Gaitskill’s novels Two Girls, Fat and Thin and Veronica—and, in the realm of memoir, Ann Patchett’s tribute to the quicksilver poet Lucy Grealy, Truth & Beauty, or Patti Smiths Just Kids, in which she recalls her early years in New York City with Robert Mapplethorpe. As the old family archetypes fade, books have begun to remap our emotional lives in bonds far less strictly codified.

“Today we do not look to see, much less affirm, our best selves in each other,” writes Vivian Gornick in her warm and rueful new memoir, The Odd Woman and the City (FSG)—a love letter to New York City, and to a 20-year relationship with her irascible friend Leonard. “To the contrary, it is the openness with which we admit to our emotional incapacities—the fear, the anger, the humiliation—that excites contemporary bonds of friendship.” A single “odd” woman and a gay man, their alliance made loneliness peaceable, the comfortable rituals and rhythms of friendship becoming the best reason for sustaining it.

These days, to admit to our flaws, we believe, is to create intimacy. We want our truths validated, our hurts and fears witnessed. We want to feel known. An entry in Heidi Julavits’s journal-like new book, The Folding Clock (Doubleday), beautifully captures this dynamic. “We bypass the years and our widening differences by confessing,” she writes about her wildly charismatic high school best friend, the Lila to her Lenù. Now in their forties, living in different cities, “we confess about our bad behavior toward husbands, children, other friends, ourselves. We are each other’s priests.” Their cozy pattern of dysfunction is threatened when, going through a rough patch, Julavits’s friend takes up with a guru. And then Julavits commits the ultimate transgression—confiding a secret in someone else first. In writing about it, “I think, in part, I was throwing down a gauntlet—like, our friendship is dying. What are we going to do about it?” says Julavits.

In our twenties, friendship was easy, but the further our paths diverge, the more effort it takes to meet halfway. A friend must be chosen, and chosen again. “The biggest test at my age is when you’ve gotten used to your friend in one role, and something fundamentally changes in his or her life,” says Hanya Yanagihara, whose second novel, A Little Life (Doubleday), follows four friends, college roommates turned members of New York City’s creative elite. Over the years, the push-pull of race and sexuality and politics—you are this, I am that—falls away, along with the illusions of youth. What’s left behind, through middle age and beyond, is a bond that’s essential but never easy. “Our friends can’t save us, no,” says the author. “But I do believe the act of confession and exposure can be liberating.” Though not uncomplicated, as Yanagihara herself discovered when the themes of her book resonated unexpectedly deeply for a dear friend.

If one of the best measures of a book is its degree of emotional truth, the same could be said of a friendship—which, after all, tells a kind of story, that of the accumulation of shared memory. These days, my own small constellation of bright-burning friendships are less about fierce discussions of art and identity than about holding a hand through a harsh edit, a divorce, a parent’s illness, an IVF cycle. They’re about seeing ourselves reflected back, in the tender and merciless gaze of the person who knows us best.

Via social media, I catch glimpses of Katie now and again. She lives in our hometown with her husband; she’s a writer and blogger and works for a nonprofit. She recently adopted a son. She lives a full-color life, rich in plot and character. I will always be reading along.

On May 8, three days after the “Neighbors” star told Howard Stern that Bieber is a “a little bit of a motherf–ker,” and “a bit of a dick,” the Canadian pop star took to Twitter to respond to the actor, making sure to misspell his last name, of course:

We’re sure Rogen is super relieved to learn that Bieber is still a fan of his work.
