Libertarian Journalist Came For Kamala Harris’ Weed Smoking, Got Facts Wrong

Kamala Harris on The Breakfast Club

Source: Power 105 / Power 105

In the wake of Sen. Kamala Harris announcing a run for president, a growing chorus of dissent has risen from both the Left and the Right. A Libertarian journalist took aim at Harris’ admittance that she smoked weed while in college and tried to blow holes in her timeline, but the presidential hopeful never said what she’s being accused of by her critics.

Crooks and Liars report:

Turns out Nick Gillespie’s timeline calculations are a little off. He claims Harris says she smoked pot while listening to Snoop Dogg in college. She didn’t.

Nick Gillespie followed up his lie with a lot of concern trolling about who Kamala Harris locked up while she was Attorney General of California.

It’s fascinating how they can push the “Democrat open borders leads to MURDER” and the “Kamala Harris was a meanie prosecutor” memes at the same time.

I’m sorry to break it to the tighty-whitey guys at Reason Magazine, but Kamala Harris is not talking to you.

Thanks to the good sleuth work of Keith Boykin, it’s shown that Sen. Harris never said she listened to Snoop Dogg in college.

She did say she smoked weed and listened to 2Pac and Snoop but she never offered a timeline nor linked it to her time in school. Further, she’s said she’s since stopped toking.

In fairness, Harris still has her fair share of critics who won’t rest until they find a breaking point. In fact, some are noting under Boykin’s tweet that Harris was already working in her field and still lighting up but again, nothing has been confirmed.

How Cardi B Came to Wear Vintage Mugler at the Grammys

Cardi B on the half shell was the 2019 Grammys’ most unforgettable red-carpet fashion moment, and the star’s stylist Kollin Carter tells WWD the plan for the pop star to wear the vintage 1995-96 Thierry Mugler couture look was months in the making.
The relationship dates back to September, when Carter direct-messaged the Mugler brand on Instagram. “Just the name Thierry Mugler…it was always a dream of mine to get a hold of archive pieces from him. He was one of my favorite designers ever since I fell in love with fashion,” the stylist explained.
One thing led to another and soon, the house’s new creative director Casey Cadwallader was inviting Cardi and her stylist to attend his debut runway show in October during Paris ready-to-wear, and visit the brand archives. “There was one piece I was fighting for and harassing them about constantly, and it was the red-carpet dress,” Carter said of the pink duchess satin and black velvet “Venus” sheath dress and embellished bodysuit. “From the moment I saw it, I knew it was going to be a debatable moment, some people would love it and some people would hate it and that’s everything we’re about when it comes to

You met them in DREAM A LITTLE DREAM OF ME. Now prepare to fall in love with THE YOUNGERS, a brand-new series from Iris Morland, full of sexy men, passionate women, and the love stories you can't get enough of. After witnessing his parents’ doomed love affair, serial playboy Ash Younger decided long ago that love was not meant for him. With his charm and good looks, he’s never lacked for beautiful women. He may push numbers as an accountant by day, but by night, he’s only interested in having a woman in his bed. Yet the night he encounters a mysterious—and gorgeous—widow who doesn’t immediately fall under his seductive spell, Ash realizes he wants her more than he’s ever wanted another woman. Following the loss of her husband two years ago, Violet Fielding wants to focus on two things: her jewelry business and beginning her life anew in the small town of Fair Haven, Washington. She doesn’t have time for men or romance, and she certainly doesn’t have time for a man who’s a well-known playboy and younger than her.  Violet already found the love of her life in her husband, and after his death, she knew she could never love anyone again. But when Ash kisses her, all of her plans and promises are turned upside down. A passion stronger than either Ash or Violet could imagine envelops them both one night—and that night changes everything. As old heartbreaks threaten to tear the couple apart, both must find the courage to see that, of all things, love is worth a second chance. ** This book is a part of the LOVE EVERLASTING series, which is one large series following multiple families and friends. When college radio went mainstream—and 21 bands that came with it

In the early 1980s, a new generation of radio programmers took over the airwaves at college radio stations around the United States, introducing their fellow students to underground rock, British and European imports, regional punk scenes, and a different kind of hip-hop than you’d hear on commercial stations. A few years later, some of those bands started showing up on MTV and breaking into Billboard’s albums and singles charts. Here are some of the college-radio bands that made major moves into the mainstream in the late 1980s and early ’90s.

This unauthorized Goosebumps parody provides a unique blend of nostalgia and dark comedy. While the series features children as the main characters, the books are, by no means, children’s books. The villains in the series will often be symbolic versions of greater issues, following themes of abuse, racism, alcoholism, and other real life monsters that haunt our children today. In our first installment, a wooden ventriloquist doll comes to life. Reader beware, you’re in for what may be something that is potentially scary!

I Got Divorced At 37 And Never Expected What Came Next

This Is Divorce At…” is a HuffPost Divorce series delving into divorce at every stage of life. Want to share your experience of divorcing at a certain age? Email us at

After 12 years, journalist Tracy Brown Hamilton and her husband both realized they’d become “really good friends” struggling to hold their marriage together.

At age 37 and with no children between them, Brown Hamilton and her husband decided to split.

“Within six months of our parting, we had both realized how happy we were with the decision and the gamble we took,” the writer told The Huffington Post.

Below, Brown Hamilton tells us more about the beautiful turn of events that unfolded after the divorce.

“My ex-husband and I ended our marriage over a beer, a decision we avoided for a while and for which we were both relieved — and sad and scared — to have reached.

I was 37 and we were living in Haarlem, in the Netherlands. We had no children — something I was never sure I wanted — but when you divorce at 37 it’s hard not to consider that you are closing the door on having a family.

Tracy in Paris a few months before her marriage ended.

After twelve years of what began as a romantic adventure but had started to feel like a Tom and Jerry cartoon, I thought perhaps I was too selfish to be a good partner.

Being single for the first time in what was then a third of my life, my options felt head-spinningly limitless. I could go anywhere and do anything. But mostly I sat alone on my balcony, drinking wine and smoking cigarettes.

A friend of mine — my first boyfriend, actually — was living in Shanghai at the time, and offered me his apartment while he traveled for the summer. He mailed me his keys and, in a bit of a mental fog, I went to China.

I did my best to be adventurous and open — sort of an Eat, Pray, Love cliché — but after a few days, I found myself sitting on my friend’s balcony, drinking wine and smoking cigarettes.

My only epiphany on that trip was that I wanted to go home. Ending my marriage didn’t necessitate a complete life overhaul; it just meant I had to get on with the new normal.

I returned to Haarlem, and on my first day back to work, I got fired. I spent a day in bed staring at the ceiling, wondering if truly I would end up living in my sister’s attic after all.

An English-language editor in the Netherlands, work possibilities were limited. A friend — a 50-year old Irish man– suggested I contact former colleagues in the states, and by the end of the week I had enough freelance work to sustain me.

And I got reminders from friends and former colleagues that I was competent, capable, resilient.

My Irish man and I started what we eventually called dating, but what was mostly going for walks and experimenting with cooking. We binge-watched HBO’s ‘Rome.’ We discovered and embraced our domestic selves.

We were partners. It felt good to be accountable, thoughtful, part of a team. Six months later, I was pregnant. When our son was 8 months old, I was pregnant again, and when our daughter was 8 months old, we were expecting our third child.

Tracy and her family.

I got divorced at 37, and by 40 was remarried, had launched a journalism career and had three beautiful children.

Divorce also enabled my ex and me to like each other again. We’re friends and I’m grateful.

For me, divorce at 37 meant I was equipped with enough ‘past’ — in the professional, relationship, and general maturity sense — to land on my feet, while still having enough ‘future’ to take life in a new direction.”

First Came Love, Then — With the Law on Our Side — Came Marriage

Reposted from Cognoscenti.

When my partner, Mal, and I moved in together, my grandmother knit us an afghan. No doubt she’d worked on it for months — the perfect square stitches and intricate floral pattern were the work of an artisan, not a crafty grandma. But the gift itself felt like an afterthought. I was standing in the hallway at my cousin’s house after a family dinner, when my mom handed me the afghan in a plain cardboard box.

My sister got her afghan at her bridal shower. Friends put down their cake plates to run their hands across the perfect stitches. My grandmother blushed a little at the compliments.

It was 2001 when I got my afghan. I imagine my grandmother assumed there would be no further milestones. I would never marry a man or be the guest of honor at a bridal shower. But my same-sex partner was big-hearted and funny and appeared not to be going anywhere. That tough, resilient purple blanket was a gesture of acceptance. But without the structure and ceremony of a wedding, that gesture became an afterthought, lost in the chaos of clearing the table and loading the dishwasher.

When Mal and I started dating, my mom and grandmother could barely look at her. They would come to Boston to visit my sisters in college, and Mal and I would push through our dread to meet them for dinner.

“You grew up in Boston,” my mom once said to Mal. “So you must be a bad driver.”

But Mal learned my grandmother’s cookie recipes and helped her grate potatoes at Thanksgiving. She fed me ice cream when I had my wisdom teeth pulled and did my laundry six months later when I had mono. She joined our raucous holiday celebrations and added her voice to our off-key show tune sing-alongs. Mal would never be a son-in-law, but she was something.

Then, in 2003, the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court ruled that same-sex couples couldn’t be denied the right to marry. The first call I got the morning of the court decision was from my mother. Mal and I had just told our families we planned to have a commitment ceremony, and my mom was overjoyed that our wedding would be, in her words, real.

It didn’t matter that the months leading up to our wedding were spent rallying at the State House instead of choosing cake toppers. I was a woman getting married. For the first time in my adult life, I was doing something my family understood.

May 17, 2004, was the first day cities and towns could accept marriage license applications from same-sex couples. While most municipalities waited until the morning, Cambridge began right at midnight. City Hall opened the night of May 16, and the lawn outside was as packed as Times Square on New Year’s Eve.

My mom and grandmother were with us as we walked past the cheering crowds and into City Hall. We kept noticing that people were cheering louder for us than the couples around us. I couldn’t understand why, until someone leaned over and congratulated my mom and grandmother on their marriage.

We gathered in the City Council chamber with couples in tuxes, couples in matching sweatshirts, two men wearing angel wings. The city clerk and a dozen municipal employees worked through the night to process our applications. At 3:15 that morning, Mal and I became the 147th same-sex couple to apply for a marriage license in Massachusetts.

Mal and I got married that October in an outdoor ceremony at an Audubon Society nature preserve. In her wedding toast, my grandmother told the story of being mistaken for a couple at City Hall. When our guests’ laughter died down, she raised her glass and gave us her blessing: “May you be together,” she said, “as long as me and your mother.”

My grandmother went into hospice the day the Supreme Court heard arguments in Obergefell v. Hodges. She died the next day, surrounded by people she loved, wrapped in an afghan she’d made for herself. I don’t know if last week’s Supreme Court ruling legalizing same-sex marriage would have mattered to her. In her mind, we were married in 2004, and all the civil rights victories that followed didn’t seem to phase her.

But I can’t help thinking about the grandmothers in Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky and Tennessee. I wonder if the right to marry will make their grandchildren’s loved ones easier to embrace. I wonder what it means that recognition from my state’s government made Mal’s and my relationship more “real” in the eyes of my family.

The last time I saw my grandmother, she was sitting in a wheelchair, looking out the window to the courtyard of her nursing home. Mal and I tried to coax her into conversation, but the effort of discussing the flowers in the garden outside seemed like too much. Her eyes were glassy. She was barely holding up her head.

I asked if she wanted to listen to music.

“Frank Sinatra,” she said.

I found an old recording of “Luck Be A Lady” on YouTube. Mal and I took her hands and danced around her wheelchair. She smiled and swayed a little. At the end of the song she asked for help getting back into bed. As we said goodbye, I couldn’t imagine Mal not being with me. The time when my family treated her with anything less then un-ambivalent acceptance feels as remote as the Ice Age.

I'm told the dead are all around us. I wouldn't know about that, I see only the violently slain. They can be victims of hit-and-run, innocents caught in a cross-fire, the murdered. They whisper to me and they never, ever, forget the face of their killer. I've learned to live with my uncanny ability, in fact I've made a career out of it. The departed aren't the only supernaturals I see. No, they're not vampires or werewolves or fae – those things don't exist. We live side by side with what some call the Otherworldy. That's too much of a mouthful for me, I call them demons. If you saw them as I do, you'd know why. Right now I'm trying to track down a missing six year-old boy whose mother was murdered. Or maybe she wasn't. To further complicate the case, Clarion PD gave me a partner I'd rather shoot than work with. I can't tell them he's a demon. They'd think I'm crazy. I'm Tiff Banks. Welcome to my world. WHISPERINGS. Paranormal mystery with a splash of humor and dash of romance.

A Gay Dad Sounds Off On The School That Canceled ‘And Then Came Tango’ Play

By Rob Watson | The Next Family

There was a significant hearing this week on Tuesday about same sex relationships and whether to ban them. You likely missed this one because you were focused on that OTHER hearing in front of the Supreme Court, the one on whether all states in the union should perform and recognize same sex marriages.

No, this hearing was smaller, with less attention and could have been held in what might be described as a wholly alternative universe.

This hearing was in front of a school board in Catheys Valley, Mariposa County, California. It was held in a place where same sex marriage legally exists without question.

Unlike the Supreme Court, which was surrounded by folks waving banners of equality, tolerance and the love that creates families, this hearing was full of people who wanted none of that and took offense against anyone who did not look and act like them.

The case before the school board was this: the Sierra Charter Foothill School was scheduled to host a performance of the play, “And Then Came Tango,” based on the true story of two male penguins who hatched and orphaned egg and raised the chick as their own. New York Theater Now describes “Tango” as: “Emily Freeman’s timely play for young audiences, shares the tale of six chinstrap penguins at the Central Park Zoo — and the people who care for them. More specifically and touchingly, Freeman zeroes in on Roy and Silo, two males who form a penguin bond akin to their male-female-paired peers, engaging in mating rituals and trying to hatch a rock. Even more touchingly, Lily, the young Junior Keeper, convinces Walter, the zookeeper in charge of the exhibit, to let Silo and Roy incubate an orphaned egg — which they do to loving fruition.”

The booking of the play had been in place for a year with the Fresno State Theater Troupe. The school regretted having missed out on the previous year’s performance of “The Velveteen Rabbit,” so put in their reservation early to get on the schedule for “Tango.”

Once the play’s synopsis was sent to them, the administration wretched over what they perceived as a “gay theme.” They immediately made attendance voluntary and sent out “warnings” to all their parents. This effort was not enough for many in the community who demanded that the ability to opt out was not enough. They insisted that the school needed to cancel the production all together or they would boycott it for the day.

The force of the vitriolic response shocked the administrators who then threw the decision of the play’s fate to the school board. Meanwhile, some of the students who wanted to see the play began passing out rainbow ribbon bracelets out to those willing to wear them. This “radical” action was also quickly shut down by the administration. The school leaders took on a “road theater” of their own and went into classes to perform skits. Their theme was about how trying to inspire acceptance of others was actually a divisive act. I am not sure what the reviews of the “Divisive Act” skits were, but in any case, they successfully shut down the distribution of rainbow ribbon bracelets and the “perpetrators” apologized.

At the same time the first and second graders were putting the final touches to their creative writing and a story called “Hannah’s Adventure” which was headed to a writing festival in Meced. Hannah was undoubtedly “safe” because she apparently did not have two moms. So, full steam ahead.

Mariposa County life for “And Then Came Tango” was not so fortuitous. The school board voted conclusively to end its run long before it got started.

While the first and second graders of Sierra Charter Foothill wrote their piece, I wrote one of my own. Here is my open letter to the school and the community it serves.

Dear Sierra Charter Foothill School Community,

I was horrified to read of your recent actions around the play called “And Then Came Tango,” which depicted two penguins who loved each other and then saved, hatched and nurtured an orphaned egg. Your principal stated that the play “does cross the line for what parents think is appropriate for school.”

At the school board meeting, parents made comments like “It’s about two men. They raise a baby and I don’t agree with that.” Your community members described the family image in “Tango” as “social engineering” and “promoting” homosexuality. The consensus was “I want to teach my kids what I believe in my home that’s it.”

The family depicted in “And Then Came Tango” is mine.

We are not penguins, and my sons were not hatched, but aside from those set-decorating changes, it is us. My oldest son was born six weeks prematurely to a heroin-addicted mother. My younger son was found abandoned by his drug-addicted mother in a trailer where he had been uncared for two days. My spouse and I had so much love between us that we wanted to extend it further. We adopted these two babies who needed us.

The love I have for my sons is the most profound I have ever known.

That is our story, and it is reflected in the factual story of the penguins in the play. The penguin real life story occurred in 1999 at the Central Park Zoo, and they met with the same intolerant attitude that your community is exhibiting. Homophobic people rose up and demanded that the penguin family be broken apart. They felt what had happened naturally was somehow “sending the wrong message.”

The “Tango” story is about love. My family’s story is about love. We are people, we are not ideas or theories for you to “agree” or “disagree” with. My sons are not experiments nor are they part of some agenda to “promote” a brand of sexuality. I would never disrespect your children by characterizing them as “talking points of heterosexual sex acts” and I expect the common decency from you to not classify my sons similarly.

Just for the record, my family is not alone. There are thousands like us in the state of California. We are your neighbors. Just like the orphaned egg in the story, there are also thousands of kids who have been abused or neglected in our state. A Cambridge study found that there is only one parental profile family that chooses to create a family using foster care/adoption as its first choice — that profile is a two male led household.

My sons are both wonderful boys — bright, charming, caring — and have both been taught to be good citizens in their school community. Even though it is clear that they would not be welcome, your school would be fortunate to have two such as them within it.

All your kids are going to come to school and share with others about how they came to be in their families, LGBT kids do the same. My sons, like other kids from differing family structures, fully grasp the concept of mutual respect between families. It is the principle where we listen to each other and find common ground, not a focus on our differences.

It is a concept that you have just voted down. It is a lesson you have yet to learn.

As for “Tango,” theater arts are meant to illustrate, illuminate and shake their audience from pre-conceived notions and feelings. This play was brought to you not so you can judge and censor it, or the families like mine that it represents, but so you can watch and grow from finding out about us. It asks you to consider that a family is driven more from the hearts of its members than it is from their genitals.

Last year, your school was upset that it missed out on the road tour of a production of the classic “The Velveteen Rabbit.” I wonder if you would have caught the message of that play and how it too affirms the creation of families such as mine. I am sorry you did not see it, as you might have taken a glimpse of what it means to be a “real” family. You would have heard this:

“Real isn’t how you are made,” said the Skin Horse. “It’s a thing that happens to you. When a child loves you for a long, long time, not just to play with, but REALLY loves you, then you become Real…It doesn’t happen all at once…You become. It takes a long time. That’s why it doesn’t happen often to people who break easily, or have sharp edges, or who have to be carefully kept. Generally, by the time you are Real, most of your hair has been loved off, and your eyes drop out and you get loose in the joints and very shabby. But these things don’t matter at all, because once you are Real you can’t be ugly, except to people who don’t understand.”

Tango was not seeking your approval, it was a gift for you so that you could start to see things more broadly and appreciate the diversity in this world. It was ready to show you what is truly real, something like my family.

By your actions, you have shut down a great educational opportunity.

That opportunity was not for your kids, it was for you.

Lalaine Explains How That Magical ‘Lizzie McGuire’ Reunion Came To Be

Unless you’ve been living under a rock (and that rock doesn’t have Wi-Fi), you’ve probably heard about the recent mini “Lizzie McGuire” reunion with Hilary Duff, Lalaine and Jake Thomas. If you did somehow miss it, just know their spontaneous meetup in a bowling alley was definitely what dreams are made of.

So this happened last night… #LizzieMcGuire

A photo posted by Jake Thomas (@sirjakethomas) on

Recently, Miranda Sanchez (known as Lalaine IRL) spoke with HuffPost Entertainment and explained why that impromptu meeting was totally fate.

Image: Tumblr

So how did this even happen?
I like to bowl. I have my own ball that my dude got me during Christmas, so we’re pretty into it. We started bowling and I swore I thought I heard [Hilary Duff]. Like her voice will never not be recognizable for me. I mean, c’mon, we were like family for how long? And then I looked, and it totally was her. We finally happened to be in the same place after 14 years. It was random and a little bit of fate maybe, so I forced fate’s hand a little bit and I immediately hit up Jake [Thomas] because he’s like less than a mile away from the bowling alley.

Oh cool, so you guys kept in touch?
Yeah, I have actually been very close with most of the people that were on the show. I was just on the phone with Adam [Lamberg] for example, so I just was like, “This is hilarious,” so I hit Jake up, and I was like, “Yo, at Pins. Hilary’s like four lanes down,” and he was like, “Haha! Oh my God! Should I come there?” So he came on over, and then we were like, “Let’s make this even more hilarious and send her a drink.” And we did. She waved to us, and she had no idea who we were because we were pretty far from her and it was dark.

But then she walked over and immediately saw me. As she was walking up, I’m just like, “Really, girl? Really?”… It hit her that it’s me. She turned around and was cracking up, and it didn’t even faze her that Jake was standing right next to me. I was like, “Are you kidding me? Did you not see this thing right by me?” She was like double stumped … It was just fate.

Wow, this is amazing. It’s the best Instagram post I’ve ever seen.
Oh for sure, and Jake was just like, “I get dibs on putting this up first,” and I was like, “I don’t care about that, dude.” It’s probably been a couple years less for him, like, maybe it’s been 12 years for him since he’s seen her, but for me it’s been like 14 … I was more on the fact that it was hilarious that all of us were here.

So was Gordo not invited because he hates bowling?
[Laughs] Oh my God! Adam would’ve totally been invited. Gordo may hate bowling, but who knows — after 12 years he might’ve changed his mind.

Might’ve changed his mind. Sure …

Ciara Came to the Office and Served Up a Lesson in Monochromatic Dressing

We’ve had a thing for Ciara and her cool-girl style for some time (the adorable selfies she takes with her infant son, Future, have made our best Instagram list on several occasions) so when the singer asked if she could stop by and play us tracks from her upcoming album, Jackie, we were more than happy to oblige. Fresh off an early flight from her adopted hometown, Atlanta, the look she showed up in was an instant hit around the office too. “I’m very into the 1990s and minimal,” said the 29-year old, dressed in head-to-toe black. “I’m very into monochromatic dressing.”

A quick survey of her best fashion moments throws up other standout monochromatic ensembles: The singer stepped out in a smoldering all-winter white suit earlier this year, and has no trouble pulling off the look of head-to-toe pinstripes. So what’s the trick to Ciara’s style? A mix of high-low fashion. It turns out almost every piece she wore for her visit was from Topshop, save the shoes (sky-high Alaïa booties, naturally). “They’re really, really good,” said Ciara of her favorite Topshop jeans, which she regularly mixes up with her best Givenchy, David Koma, and Anthony Vaccarello pieces. And it’s not just Ciara who likes to pair posh with price-conscious: Her eleven-month-old, Future, is already leading the next generation of fashion fans. “Riccardo [Tisci] custom-made him some Nikes,” said the singer, adding, “but babyGap is the best for me.”

Killers’ Christmas Single Tradition Came After They Turned Down Bono’s Gap Ad

The Killers‘ frontman Brandon Flowers has revealed that the band’s tradition of releasing an annual Christmas single first began after the band turned down an offer from Bono to do a Gap advertisement. “It really started from being asked to do the RED campaign,” Flowers tells NME, referencing the Aids charity that the tracks raise money for each year.
