This Healthy Meal Can Help With Prostate Cancer Prevention #REPRESENTMENSHEALTH

Chef Jernard Wells

Source: Urban One / Urban One

Urban One has launched the Represent Men’s Health initiative with the aim of raising awareness of how Black men are focusing on their minds and bodies to remain their healthiest. This week, the focus is squarely on prostate cancer, a deadly condition that, with diet changes along with routine screening, can be detected and contained and this cooking tip from Atlanta’s Chef Jernard Wells can aid in that journey.

Black men are 1.6 times more likely to receive a prostate cancer diagnosis and are twice as likely to die from it as noted by the Prostate Cancer Foundation. With regular exercise, scheduled doctors visits, changing our eating habits, and a proper screening, we can all “Represent Men’s Health” by lowering those numbers.

Take a look at how you can plan a healthy meal that helps to prevent prostate cancer with Chef Jernard Wells.

#REPRESENTMENSHEALTH will run weekly original content through July 24.

Stella McCartney Casts Alicia Keys in Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign

Stella McCartney chose Alicia Keys as the face of her 2017 Breast Cancer Awareness campaign not just because the two are friends and Keys is a celebrity, but also to target African-American women, who are the fastest-growing group being diagnosed with breast cancer. Statics also show that African-American women diagnosed with breast cancer have a 42 percent higher mortality rate than Caucasian women, which McCartney called “a hard-hitting fact.”
“[The higher mortality rate is mainly because they don’t get an opportunity to get an early diagnosis or the right kind of treatment,” said McCartney. “This really compelled me to reach out to Alicia.  I asked her if she would like to reach out and speak to this community and be the face of the campaign.”

The campaign is meant to raise awareness about the disease and promote regular screenings and early detection. McCartney designed the Ophelia Whistling bra and underwear set in Poppy Pink set for the campaign. This year the campaign will support the Memorial Sloan Kettering Breast Examination Center of Harlem — in Keys’ hometown — which has screened more than 200,000 women for breast cancer and offers free, high-quality care to the local community.

Single Mom With Terminal Cancer On Why She Fought For California’s End Of Life Option Act

The End of Life Option Act, which allows physicians to prescribe lethal doses of drugs to terminally ill patients, was signed into law in California on Monday by Governor Jerry Brown. The law, which will go into effect in 2016, allows patients to seek options for aid in dying if two doctors determine they have less than six months to live. The patient also needs to submit a written request, two oral requests, and have the mental capacity to make decisions.

Christy O’Donnell, who was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer over a year ago, made it her passion to see that the law was passed. “I did not want anyone to go through what I knew I was going to have to go through at my death,” says O’Donnell, during a recent appearance on The Doctors. She explains that she has tried every type of medical treatment, including 12 months of chemotherapy and brain surgery, and while they have helped to keep her alive, it has not been without suffering. “My death is already going to come. It is already certain, medically, and there’s no reason that I need to add to my daughter’s emotional suffering or mine by not having peace at my death, and I just hope and I pray that I have the right words and say the right things for all of the thousands of terminally ill who can’t speak for themselves,” says the 47-year-old.

A single mother to a 21-year-old, O’Donnell says she wants to make sure her last moments with her daughter will be something her daughter can remember positively.

“You realize that it’s very important the memory that your child is going to have to carry the rest of their life,” she says, “and I do not want my child’s last memory of me to be of me in excruciating pain while my lung fills up with my bodily fluid, and I essentially drown in my own fluids. This end of life options act gives me and thousands of other terminally ill patients in California the ability to die peacefully, quickly, with our family.”

Parents Say There’s One Thing Worse Than Having Son Diagnosed With Terminal Cancer

After their son, Kirk II, was diagnosed with liver cancer and told he had only six months to live, Laurie and Kirk Sr. claim that the woman who previously had left their son at the altar ran — not walked — to tie the knot this time.

“I believe Star was seeing dollar signs with my dying son. She married him for his life insurance money,” claims Laurie. “Star is manipulative, and she is out for Star … Star has physically, emotionally and financially destroyed my son.”

Star admits she has cheated on Kirk twice and that she hit him once, but she vehemently denies that she’s after his money. “Kirk’s family has judged me since day one,” says Star, who says she wishes they would back off. “They make me out to be this evil person.”

Why is Kirk II eager to save his marriage? Can it even be saved? Should his parents butt out? Watch more from Friday’s episode of Dr. Phil here.

Stella McCartney Unveils Latest Lingerie Designs for Breast Cancer Awareness Month

STELLA’S GOOD CAUSE: Stella McCartney is for a second year launching lingerie designs in support of October’s Breast Cancer Awareness month.
The designer has created the Alina Playing range — a balconette bra, a soft-cup bra and a bikini brief, all in the same shade of hot pink. A percentage of the profits from the range — which retails from $ 55 for the briefs through to $ 110 for the bras — will be donated to three breast cancer charities: the Linda McCartney Centre in Liverpool, England, part of the Royal Liverpool University Hospital; the National Breast Cancer Foundation in the U.S., and the National Breast Cancer Foundation in Australia.
McCartney has tapped Cara Delevingne to appear in a campaign shot by Sean Thomas to mark the launch, which pictures Delevingne wearing the set and making a heart shape with her hands at her chest. McCartney said Delevingne “represents a generation of young women that we are really trying to reach,” adding that she hopes the campaign, to launch on McCartney’s Web site and social media channels, will “inspire all generations of women to be aware of breast cancer and be aware that preventing it is the most positive approach.” Last year, Kate Moss

The Touching Thing This 5-Year-Old Did After Losing Her Dad To Cancer

A Wisconsin preschooler celebrated her fifth birthday with a special tribute to her father, who died of cancer.

Olesia Clark was 2 years old when her dad Kyle passed away in December 2012 after a 17-month battle with brain cancer, her mom Elizabeth told The Huffington Post.

“Olesia and Kyle were very close,” Clark said. “They spent a lot of time hanging out, going for long walks and reading books. He even took her to the gym with him where he worked part-time where she would sit behind the desk with him to greet clients.”

Around the time school ended last year, Olesia asked her mom if she could cut her hair and give it to kids who have cancer. When Clark asked her daughter why she wanted to do that, “she said that a friend from her class had done it and that she thought it was a really good thing to do,” the mom said.

As Olesia and her mom were starting to plan her fifth birthday party, they decided that would be the perfect time to make the hair donation. On July 18, Clark’s stylist friend Tracie came to their house, and cut off 12 inches of Olesia’s hair to donate to Wigs for Kids.

Though the little girl “seemed a little nervous,” her mom said Olesia’s face “lit up” in excitement when Tracie handed her the freshly cut ponytail.  ”It was a really hot and humid day so when her new cut and style was complete, she kept running her fingers through it telling me that it felt ‘so cool.'” Clark said.

Olesia then celebrated her fifth birthday with friends and family, but instead of opening traditional birthday gifts she asked guests to make donations to the Aurora Health Care Foundation to support neuro-oncology research at Aurora St. Luke’s Medical Center.

The donations in lieu of presents idea was a suggestion from Olesia’s mom. “I asked her, ‘Would you like to ask for birthday gifts for your birthday like you do every year or since you are going to be donating your hair, would you also like to ask your friends to make donations to help people like your daddy instead of bringing gifts?'” Clark told HuffPost. “Without hesitation, her response was, ‘I want to help people like my daddy!'”

Clark said Olesia still cherishes her memories of her father. “The thing that she remembers most about him is how much fun they used to have together,” the mom said. “He was a really funny guy and she remembers that he was really funny and made her smile a lot, even when he was in the hospital.”

The mom also believes Olesia’s selflessness is making her dad very proud. “He was always proud of her, from the time she took her first breath until the time he took his last. There is not a doubt in my mind that he’s up there in Heaven, smiling down on her with pride at this very moment,” she said.

Clark hopes her family’s story will raise awareness and inspire people to donate to brain cancer research. She also hopes Olesia can inspire other people who have lost loved ones to cancer to get their children involved in the cause.

“Olesia went through a lot when her dad died and still struggles with the aftermath of losing a parent. Making the decisions to cut her hair and then to collect donations instead of birthday presents gave her a new sense of healing from her experiences,” the mom said. “It opened up an opportunity for her to talk about her dad and help others in the process. And she didn’t miss the presents at all — in fact, she still looks for donation notifications in the mail every day in hopes that more people are giving.”

Here’s How The HPV Vaccine Can Help Cut The Risk Of Cancer In Gay Men

Each week HuffPost Gay Voices, in a partnership with blogger Scout, LGBT HealthLink and researcher Susana Fajardo, brings you a round up of some of the biggest LGBT wellness stories from the past seven days. For more LGBT Wellness visit our page dedicated to the topic here.

HPV Vaccination Cuts Anal Cancer Risk By 63%

Many HIV-positive queer men already receive treatment for high-grade anal intraepithelial neoplasia (HGAIN), a condition that can lead to anal cancer. Researchers added in an HPV vaccination to HGAIN treatment and reduced the lifetime risk of anal cancer by a whopping 63%!

#TransHealthFail Summarized

Now that #TransHealthFail has taken off on the interwebs, Mashable has nicely taken those posts and summarized six ways the health care system doesn’t work for trans people. We love seeing the big picture and seeing Mashable cover trans health.

Still So Little Money For LGBTQ Research

Researchers are still monitoring NIH to see how many of their projects address LGBT health. In the most recent pass (no T this time), they found if you look beyond HIV, only 10 of 27,000 grants in 2012 were for LGB health. Even worse, ¾ of the Institutes at NIH funded no research about us that looked beyond HIV at all. As other researchers point out, this needs to change.

Eating Disorders So Much Worse For LGBTQ College Students

It looks like eating disorders hit LGBTQ students the hardest. A new study found that 16% of transgender college students had an eating disorder, a rate five times higher than that of cisgender students. LGBTQ students were also twice as likely to have induced vomiting and were more likely to use diet pills than straight students.

HIV Disclosure Rare Among Straight Men Who Sometimes Sleep with Men

This one’s a doozy. A new study of men who identify as straight but sometimes have sex with men found that 1) 58% were HIV-positive and that 2) they usually told their female partners about being HIV-positive, but hardly ever told their male partners. Not cool, guys.

Youth Pride Clinic Helps LGBTQ Teens

Here’s a happy story: after seeing too many frustrated patients and awkward doctors the Children’s National Medical Center added a Youth Pride Clinic, designated afternoons where LGBTQ teens can get help in a judgment-free zone with docs who know what’s up. So simple! Why didn’t we think of that?

Tig Is an Intimate Look at Life and Laughter After Cancer

tig notaro

I have a distinct memory of the first time I ever heard the comedian Tig Notaro’s voice. It was a Friday afternoon in the early summer of 2012. My boyfriend had just picked me up at The New York Times, where I was working, and we were driving out of the city for the weekend, NPR humming along in the background. I wasn’t paying much attention until this funny, flat, sort of stricken-sounding person came on the radio, telling a completely mundane, very slow-paced story about the experience of repeatedly running into the eighties pop star Taylor Dayne around Los Angeles. “I love your voice,” the storyteller told Dayne at every opportunity, and then, in the retelling, she would pause for what felt like an impossible amount of time, letting the line sink in, the laughter build. It was hilarious, but the kind of funny you can’t really put your finger on. It was totally original and impossible to tune out.

I had no idea when I listened to that segment that the voice belonged to a comedian named Tig Notaro, or who Tig Notaro was. And I definitely had no idea that this mysterious person with the mysterious name was already in the middle of a really, really bad year.

In fact, the Taylor Dayne segment, as we see in the intimate new documentary, Tig, out on Netflix today, happened when Notaro was already more than halfway through the laundry list of calamities that befell her in 2012. First, while filming a small role in the movie In a World, Notaro collapsed and ended up hospitalized for a week with a life-threatening C. diff infection. Shortly after getting out of the hospital, still unable to eat and twenty pounds lighter, she received the horrifying news that her mother—“the person who understood me most”—had fallen, hit her head, and lost consciousness, never to wake up again. She traveled to Texas to be with her mom as she was taken off life support. Then she went to New York, to tell the Taylor Dayne story during a live This American Life show, which was taped in early May and aired on May 18. “I needed something good to happen,” Tig explains in the documentary. “I felt like if I could just get to New York and do This American Life, I would feel like I was coming through something.”

It was while she was in New York that TAL’s Ira Glass suggested Notaro do a piece about the shitty year she was having, but she wasn’t ready to go there. She went back to L.A., where, by late summer, she had found a lump in one breast, which turned out to be lumps in both breasts, and a diagnosis of bilateral breast cancer. She was facing a double mastectomy and a very uncertain future when she decided, just days after her diagnosis, to take to the stage at the L.A. comedy club Largo with some new material. “That was a risk,” she tells the camera. “It could have been my last show ever that bombed, and then I died.”

She neither bombed nor died. What she performed that night—a 30-minute, off-the-cuff, stream-of-consciousness set in which she processes her shock, fear, and bewilderment in real time on stage—became comedy legend, single-handedly elevating her from comedian’s comedian to near-household name. Notaro became a viral sensation before there was anything even available for the Internet to hear. (Louis C.K. tweeted about her “masterful” set, and eventually made a recording of it available on his website.) Press coverage and book offers started rolling in. “I was thinking, Am I even going to be alive to finish a book?” Tig remembers.

For fans of that material (aka pretty much anyone who’s ever heard it), it’s tempting to watch the hour-and-a-half-long Tig as a sort of extended Behind the Music about the famous Largo set. But the documentary, directed by Kristina Goolsby and Ashley York, actually focuses on the year that followed that night, when Notaro, suddenly famous for a one-off comedy set that could never be repeated, found herself in serious demand but without any usable material. It’s about the process of trying to develop a new act, painful night after night, at small clubs across the country, where promoters announced her with great fanfare and Notaro knew she couldn’t deliver. It’s also about rebuilding her personal life (2012 involved a breakup, which she mentions in her set, but the documentary doesn’t delve into). We watch Tig fall in love with the actress Stephanie Allynne, to whom she’s  now engaged. We also watch the heartbreaking process of Tig trying to have a child. Notaro, the documentary reveals, was already trying to get pregnant before she got sick; in the aftermath of cancer, no longer able to carry a baby herself, she endures risky hormone treatments to freeze her eggs. Her friend donates sperm, and, after she announces her need for a surrogate on her podcast, Professor Blastoff, a Seattle woman volunteers. We’re right there with the grieving comedian, as she attempts to implant the fertilized embryos, her last shot at having a biological child.

It’s an emotional and moving portrait of life after cancer, and of the sort of equanimity that can come out of tragedy. Tig is famous for finding humor in dark places, for chronicling her misfortune, but her best quality, as this documentary demonstrates, is her willingness to count her blessings. “After this crazy year that I had, one of the really positive things that came from it is being more open to people than I’ve ever been,” she tells her surrogate, hoping for the best. “People have shown just such generosity and love and kindness that my head is exploding. This is not something that I would have done a year ago. I was just so much more closed off.”

Taylor Gives $50K to 11-Year-Old Fan with Cancer

Can someone give Taylor Swift her wings already? Another day means another opportunity for the "Shake It Off" singer to go off and do amazing things that prove the world is a better place with her in it. Swiftie Naomi Oakes counts the blond superstar as her favorite singer and was planning to attend Swift's Aug. 18 concert with her best friend in Phoenix. But plans changed when the 11-year-old was diagnosed with Acute Myelogenous Leukemia on June 25 and learned that she needs aggressive treatment resulting in her not being able to leave the hospital for six to nine months. The adorable brunette chose Swift's "Bad Blood" as her fight song and is preparing to face the cancer head-on. Her family made an inspiring video telling Naomi's story and her love for Swift in an attempt to reach the singer. In the video, they ask the "Taylor Nation" to help spread the word on social media, and it was a success! It also didn't take long! Two days after the video was uploaded to YouTube, Swift generously donated $ 50,000 to Naomi's GoFundMe page writing, "To the beautiful and brave Naomi, I'm sorry you have to miss it, but there will always be more concerts. Let's focus on getting you feeling better. I'm sending the biggest hugs to you and your family." But it doesn't end there! (Disclaimer: You may want to grab the tissues.) A video was just posted on YouTube of Naomi seeing Swift's message for the first time and, well, it's the sweetest thing ever. The precious girl is sitting in her hospital bed with a huge grin on her face and appears to be staring at a phone in pure amazement. "I can barely breath," Naomi says with a smile in her face. It's obvious she hasn't lost her spirit when she says in jest, "I seriously think I'm going to pass out," bringing the whole room to laughter. We need to go dry our eyes now. Get well soon, Naomi!

News: Man Pretty Cocky Since Beating Cancer

FT. LAUDERDALE, FL—Whether he’s bragging about his newfound appreciation for life or arrogantly refusing to take anything for granted, local man Daniel Oretsky, 38, has been acting insufferably cocky since winning his two-year battle with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, sources confirmed Tuesday.

Oretsky, who can’t even go five minutes without rubbing everyone’s face in his gratitude for being alive, has reportedly taken every possible opportunity to pat himself on the back for being cancer-free for the first time since 2013.

“Since beating cancer, I feel like I have a new lease on life,” boasted Oretsky during yet another of his unbelievably self-aggrandizing stories about having a normal white blood cell count. “I feel great, and my energy and appetite are back—even just doing mundane things like taking a walk or doing the dishes have this added significance now that I’m healthy.”

“Mainly, I’m going …

This Trans Man’s Breast Cancer Nightmare Exemplifies The Problem With Transgender Health Care

Jay Kallio is a transgender man who lived through a healthcare nightmare he hopes no other trans person will ever have to face, and he shared the painful story with HuffPost Live’s Nancy Redd last week.

It began when Kallio found a lump on his breast just three months after a mammogram. He had a second mammogram, then a biopsy and, when weeks went by without receiving any test results, he just assumed everything was fine. That changed when he suddenly got a phone call from the doctor who performed his biopsy — and who was not his primary physician.

“She said to me, ‘Hi, I was just curious how you were doing with your diagnosis.’ And I said, ‘What diagnosis?’ She she sort of spurted, ‘[Your doctor] hasn’t called you yet?'” Kallio remembered.

The biopsy confirmed that Kallio had “very aggressive” breast cancer, and Kallio knew he needed treatment immediately, especially as the pain in his breast intensified.

“It felt like getting shot slowly. It felt like it was heading right for my heart. So I was getting nervous. I still get nervous when I think about it,” he said.

Even after that, Kallio’s doctor still wouldn’t contact him, which came as a huge surprise considering his doctor was head of surgery at a major hospital in “great big blue Manhattan,” a liberal city where Kallio expected “embracing care” from “competent experts.” The physician eventually got in touch when Kallio made moves to have his case transferred, but the conversation did not go as he hoped.

“The first thing [the doctor] said was, ‘I have a real problem with your transgender status.’ And he said, ‘When I found out you were transgender, the first thing I wanted to do, my first impulse was to send you to psychiatry,'” Kallio said. “So this is what a breast surgeon wanted to do with my breast cancer, is first send me to psychiatry.”

After a long struggle, Kallio eventually did find a “very welcoming” surgeon to help him, and the procedure also accomplished something Kallio had never been able to do because of his low income.

“That’s how I lost my breasts. I was never able to afford any transition care as a transgender person, so I lost my breasts through having a double mastectomy for breast cancer,” he said.

Unfortunately, Kallio is currently in the middle of another fight for his life — this time with terminal lung cancer. Though the outlook is bleak, Kallio told HuffPost Live he sees the effects of the work he’s done in between his two diagnoses, including providing free training to hospital staffs on how to treat LGBTQ patients of all kinds.

“The second time around I am being treated in a very loving fashion by providers, most of whom I have trained to do my cancer care,” he said. “And the really positive, uplifting thing I have to say is: Activism works. Activism works, so get out there and fight for your rights, fight for your lives. It’s not going to end with me. I may be facing the end, and I won’t be out there screaming and yelling and holding a sign much longer, but up until my last breath, that’s what I’m going to be doing because I know it saves lives.”

Watch Jay Kallio share the powerful story of his fight with cancer in the video above, and click here for the full HuffPost Live conversation about the challenges of transgender healthcare.

Wrestler (And Real-Life Superhero) John Cena Honors Young Fan Battling Cancer

John Cena may not have real super powers, but the WWE wrestler is known for his ability to make dreams come true.

Last year, the 38-year-old became the first celebrity to grant 400 wishes through the Make-A-Wish Foundation.

“I think it boils down to the fact that John connects with children in a really special way,” a spokesperson for Make-A-Wish told Yahoo! News at the time.

On Monday night’s episode of “WWE Raw,” Cena showed off his wish-granting powers yet again when he honored a young wrestling fan who is battling cancer.

Cena, the current WWE United States Champion, was facing off with Kevin Owens when he spotted the youngster in the audience. The child was carrying an “I’m Beating Cancer” sign.

“If I … say the words ‘never give up,’ not only am I telling the truth, I am encouraging young and old, all alike, like that person right there, to do the exact same thing,” Cena said, pointing out the kid.

Later, once the taping of the show was over, the wrestler went into the audience and ushered the youngster into the wrestling ring.

The look of incredulity on the kid’s face says it all.

News: Scientists Make Unclear Breakthrough After Giving Robot Cancer

STANFORD, CA—Theorizing that their work most likely represents a groundbreaking scientific achievement of some kind, researchers at Stanford University announced Thursday that they have made an unclear breakthrough by giving a robot cancer.

The team of oncologists and mechanical engineers told reporters that after years of research and repeated trials, they had finally succeeded in causing an aggressive form of advanced cancer to spread throughout a laboratory robot’s mechanized arm and central processing unit, noting that this landmark accomplishment probably has beneficial implications for the scientific community or society at large “or something like that.”

“Right now, what we can absolutely say for sure is that this robot has Stage IV cancer and only has two to three months left until it succumbs to the disease.”

“Diagnostic testing has confirmed that our robot has developed a high concentration of malignancies throughout its entire structural framework, which, for all …

Vice President’s Son Beau Biden Dies Of Brain Cancer

Extremely sad news has trickled from out of the White House. Beau Bide, the son of Vice President Joe Biden has passed away at the age of 46 after a battle with brain cancer.

The VP released a statement obtained by the Washington Post:

It is with broken hearts that Hallie, Hunter, Ashley, Jill and I announce the passing of our husband, brother and son, Beau, after he battled brain cancer with the same integrity, courage and strength he demonstrated every day of his life.

The entire Biden family is saddened beyond words. We know that Beau’s spirit will live on in all of us—especially through his brave wife, Hallie, and two remarkable children, Natalie and Hunter.

Beau’s life was defined by service to others. As a young lawyer, he worked to establish the rule of law in war-torn Kosovo. A major in the Delaware National Guard, he was an Iraq War veteran and was awarded the Bronze Star. As Delaware’s Attorney General, he fought for the powerless and made it his mission to protect children from abuse.

More than his professional accomplishments, Beau measured himself as a husband, father, son and brother. His absolute honor made him a role model for our family. Beau embodied my father’s saying that a parent knows success when his child turns out better than he did.

In the words of the Biden family: Beau Biden was, quite simply, the finest man any of us have ever known.

President Obama also followed suit by releasing a heartfelt statement of his own.

Mom With Breast Cancer Says ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Saved Her Life: ‘That TV Show Was Probably My Sign’

An Israeli woman is crediting ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ with saving her life after an episode of the medical drama prompted her to seek a second opinion about a lump in her breast.

Two years ago, Sarit Fishbaine visited a breast specialist to get a check-up. The doctor told her that she had “lumpy breasts,” but assured her that she “had nothing to worry about.”

“I was 34 years old, healthy and nursing my third child — any lumpiness, [the doctor] said, was probably due to milk collecting in one area of the breast and the issue would likely subside once I stopped nursing,” Fishbaine told Yahoo! News.

Six months later, however, after she had stopped breastfeeding, a lump in Fishbaine’s left breast did not go away. She initially dismissed it as nothing, but warning bells sounded after she caught an episode of “Grey’s Anatomy.”

“In the episode, a young mom arrives at Seattle Grace Hospital for a mastectomy after her breast cancer had been mistaken for milk collecting in her breast. I couldn’t fall asleep that night — it felt like a huge warning sign,” she told Yahoo!

The very next day, Fishbaine made an appointment to see another breast specialist.

This time, the doctor sent her for an “urgent mammogram and biopsy.” It was soon discovered that Fishbaine had Stage 3 breast cancer, which had spread to her lymph nodes.

“I started six months of chemo right away and after that I had surgery, I had a mastectomy and then I had radiation therapy so I got the full package,” Fishbaine told NBC News. “I love ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and I love watching TV and I think God works in mysterious ways and that watching that TV show was probably my sign.”

Fishbaine, who lives in Kvutzat Yavne, a religious kibbutz in Israel, is now cancer-free. She says she’s getting reconstructive surgery and working to “rebuild” her life.

On May 16, Shonda Rhimes, the director, producer and screenwriter of “Grey’s Anatomy,” shared Fishbaine’s story on Facebook.

“Humbling,” Rhimes wrote.

Fishbaine isn’t the first in her family to have a story go viral. As The Times of Israel points out, Fishbaine’s dad — Sydney Engelberg, a professor who teaches at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem — won the hearts of netizens earlier this month after a photograph surfaced of him holding a baby during a lecture.

“Dad, you’re the best!” Fishbaine wrote on her Facebook page at the time, per a Times translation.

Woman Faces Friend Who Lied To Her About Having Cancer (And It’s Not The Reaction You Expect)

Imagine your best friend telling you she is facing the battle of a lifetime: incurable cancer. Then, after you’ve supported her in every way you could — even shaving your head in solidarity — you discover that the cancer diagnosis was a lie.

That’s what happened to Chelsey. When the 25-year-old learned that her dear friend Meaghan had terminal cancer, she banded together with other friends in support. In addition to shaving their heads, the women got matching tattoos and raised thousands of dollars to help with Meaghan’s medical bills. After 14 months of comforting their friend, Meaghan confessed that it was all a lie — she didn’t have cancer, and she wasn’t going to die. Hear why Meaghan says she faked cancer.

Now, for the first time since the truth was revealed, Meaghan comes face to face with Chelsey in the video above.

Meaghan apologizes to Chelsey for taking months to face her and says, “I want you to know that the reason I haven’t reached out is not because I don’t care or because I’m not sorry, because that’s not true. I think that I wanted to figure out as much as I could why I got to this point … I betrayed you. I betrayed your trust. I’ve done it before, and it wasn’t fair.”

Dr. Phil asks Meaghan, “Are you sorry for what you’ve done to her?”

“I am very, very, very sorry,” she says. “I am sorry to [Chelsey], to all of the girls, to my family.”

Chelsey addresses Meaghan. “I don’t want you to think that I hate you, because I don’t. I don’t wish any harm on you,” she says. “My first and still reaction has always just been heartbreak, knowing what kind of a broken place that must come from to do something like that and to feel so unlovable that you thought that’s something that you had to do. The amount of shame and guilt that you must feel is probably far worse than any punishment that could be inflicted on you.”

Chelsey says she and their other friends didn’t deserve what Meaghan put them through, but as awful as the situation has been, it’s better than Meaghan dying of cancer. “I wish that you could have stopped it before it went on as long as it did,” says Chelsey. “I think you can move on from this; I don’t think this has to define you.”

Women Shave Heads In Support Of Friend With Cancer, Then Learn She Was Lying

Meaghan, 25, deceived her family and friends for more than a year, telling them she had been diagnosed with incurable cancer. She carried out the ruse even as her stepmother created a fundraising page that attracted $ 5,000 in donations for her, and her close friends showed support and solidarity by shaving their heads and getting matching tattoos.

Then the truth came out — it was all a lie. Meaghan didn’t have cancer. Ultimately, Meaghan was charged with grand theft and fraud. She pleaded not guilty.

Why would this young woman dupe the people closest to her? In the video above, she takes Dr. Phil through the moment she decided to lie about having a life-threatening disease.

Meaghan says at the time, she was grieving the loss of four people to whom she was very close. “I think, one day, I was in a very dark place and I didn’t feel like I had that unconditional love or support, and I wanted it,” she recalls. “The thought process was just that I wanted someone to pay attention.”

Meaghan says she first lied to her stepmother and father, and then her closest friends, who spread the word. Two months later, the news was out.

“There’s a point at which you said, ‘This is working. It’s getting me what I want,’” Dr. Phil says.

“I cannot every think of a time I thought those things,” Meaghan says. “But, yes. It was obvious that it was having the effect of those things that I had always wanted … I didn’t ever think in my head, Oh, this is really working. It was more of, this is something that I lied about, and I didn’t know how to stop.”

Dr. Phil points out that this wasn’t a rash decision, like Meaghan has said before. “This was something that was premeditated, and you sustained this lie in stages over 14 months,” he says. “You could have lied your way out of the lie.”

On Monday’s episode of Dr. Phil, Meaghan faces Chelsey, one of the close friends to whom she lied. Will Chelsey forgive Meaghan? Click here for local listings — and watch more here.

Stunning ‘Woman: Redefined’ Portraits Show How Breast Cancer Reshaped These Womens’ Bodies

“The photo shoot was the first time someone looked at me like a person and as not a specimen on the exam room table.”

That’s what one woman photographed for the upcoming book Woman: Redefined told the project’s creators, Kristina Hunter and ML Kenneth. The pair have created a book of portraits featuring women who have undergone breast cancer surgery, which they intend to distribute free of charge to Breast Health centers in the U.S. and Canada.

(Some images below may be considered NSFW.)

woman redefined

Hunter, a college professor, decided to create the book after her own breast cancer diagnosis in the autumn of 2013.

“When the shock wore off, and we began to investigate our options, my husband and I were disheartened to see only very clinical images of women before and after their surgeries,” Hunter told The Huffington Post. “Moreover, these photos were kept in a binder, in a drawer, in an office. Why the secrecy? Are we not talking about 1 in 9 women? Should we not embrace our new bodies? Doesn’t the unfamiliar become the norm by seeing it?”

woman redefined

Hunter teamed up with artist and photographer ML Kenneth to take portraits of women who have undergone a wide scope of breast surgeries. The women included are a diverse group, pulling from all ages and ethnicities.

“The process of working on the Woman: Redefined project has been humbling, profound, and transformative,” Kenneth told The Huffington Post. “Having these brave women share their bodies, stories and hearts with me has changed forever how I feel about art, beauty and life. Each body, imperfectly beautiful, each woman, completely inspiring. Cancer has taught them to not take life for granted. In turn, they have taught me how to LIVE.”

woman redefined

Hunter and Kenneth hope that their book will help women facing breast cancer by reassuring them that they are not alone — and that their bodies will still be works of art after whatever procedures their treatment may require.

Hunter told HuffPost: “We would like to influence the internal dialogue of women and their spouses when going through breast cancer, ‘What will I look like? Will I still feel like a woman? Will I be sexy? Will I be me?’ And if we can influence a broader social dialogue about women’s bodies and help to improve women’s self-esteem by showing real bodies in a beautiful light, then we have done something worthwhile.”

woman redefined

The book will feature women’s words as well as their photographs. The anecdotes will explore how the subjects feel about their bodies and what their experience with cancer has been like.

“As an artist, I refer to myself as a visual storyteller,” Kenneth said. “How profound, that I get to help these women tell their stories.”

Ultimately, Hunter and Kenneth intend for the book to be a source of hope to anyone affected by breast cancer.

“I want women going through breast cancer to see a future for themselves,” Hunter told HuffPost. “To see that they are and will continue to be more than the disease. That they are whole, and beautiful and perfect.”

Angelina Jolie Undergoes Surgery To Remove Ovaries, Fallopian Tubes To Avoid Cancer

Angelina Jolie has revealed that she underwent preventative surgery to have her ovaries and fallopian tubes removed last week after tests found inflammatory markers that could be an indication of cancer.

Jolie, who had a preventive double mastectomy in 2013 when genetic tests showed an 87 percent risk of breast cancer, wrote in a New York Times op-ed on Tuesday that the same BRCA1 gene gives her a 50 percent risk of ovarian cancer.

As a result, the 39-year-old filmmaker, actress, UN envoy and mother of six had been planning to undergo the procedure for some time.

It is a less complex surgery than the mastectomy, but its effects are more severe. It puts a woman into forced menopause,” Jolie wrote. “So I was readying myself physically and emotionally, discussing options with doctors, researching alternative medicine, and mapping my hormones for estrogen or progesterone replacement. But I felt I still had months to make the date.”

When she learned two weeks ago that tests revealed higher inflammation levels, Jolie and her doctors decided it was time. Her husband, actor Brad Pitt, who was in France at the time, flew to be with her during the procedure, a laparoscopic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy.

Jolie wrote that doctors found a small benign tumor on one ovary, but no signs of cancer in any of the tissues.

As a result of the surgery, she is now in menopause.

After her double mastectomy, Jolie revealed to People magazine that she was planning to have her ovaries removed. She also told Entertainment Weekly that she was preparing to have another surgery to prevent cancer.

In her latest op-ed, Jolie emphasized that her decisions are specific to her, and that a family history of the disease played a role in her decision. She lost her mother, grandmother and aunt to cancer.

Jolie said other women may have different options, writing:

“I did not do this solely because I carry the BRCA1 gene mutation, and I want other women to hear this. A positive BRCA test does not mean a leap to surgery. I have spoken to many doctors, surgeons and naturopaths. There are other options. Some women take birth control pills or rely on alternative medicines combined with frequent checks. There is more than one way to deal with any health issue. The most important thing is to learn about the options and choose what is right for you personally.”

She added that younger women may have the option to remove the fallopian tubes but keep their ovaries so they do not go into menopause and can still have children.

“It is not easy to make these decisions,” Jolie wrote. “But it is possible to take control and tackle head-on any health issue. You can seek advice, learn about the options and make choices that are right for you. Knowledge is power.”

My Ex Has Cancer. What Should I Feel?

On my way home earlier this week I learned that my first husband was battling lung cancer. I sat stunned for a moment and let the information wash over me. I hadn’t spoken to him in over 20 years, and only had heard snippets of unsolicited information about him in those same two decades. Frankly, I never really thought about him. So upon hearing this news, the last thing I was expecting to feel was a deep sadness. Sadness that this vibrant man who always rocked an enviable mane of hair was in the throes of chemo and radiation. Sadness that his raspy trademark twang was likely forever altered. Sadness for the worry and concern that he and his family must be feeling. Sadness that I had lost contact with him.

By the time I was 23 I had been a bridesmaid so many times that I was turning into the cliché of always the bridesmaid, never the bride. When this brash and bold man who was a great date asked me to marry him a few months into our anything-but-calm relationship, it seemed like a good thing to do. Forget our age difference (14 years), or the fact that all we truly shared was a love of skiing and Mexican food, or that our friends and families were looking at us crosseyed, we went ahead with our plans, got married, made each other miserable and divorced less than two years later. With two careers, no kids and no money involved, it was an expeditious ending to what really was a whirlwind romance.

When I arrived home, I told my mate what I had just learned and how I was feeling. His response was “You should send him a note.” I tracked down his work email and sent a brief but heartfelt message expressing my concern and condolences, with best wishes for a speedy and successful recovery. Not long after I hit the send button I received a reply that was witty and charming and radiated the kind of energy that I remembered from our days together. He updated me on his health and life path, referenced an inside joke we had once shared and closed with “It’s great to hear from you… Let’s keep in touch.”

I was almost as speechless as I had been earlier in the day and heard that he was sick.

Having spent too many months last year actively disengaging myself from the detritus of an unhealthy relationship, to the years spent in contention and litigation as my second marriage went on the chopping blocks, it is my natural default state to avoid contact with former flames. A pleasant exchange with the possibility of a beer over a plate of old time’s sake seemed so foreign and awkward. But in retrospect, it’s a lovely gesture. It made me remember the happy and funny times that we shared, and inspired me to believe that some day, perhaps 20 years from now, the black clouds of anger or apathy or indifference may part to reveal a happier, sunnier space.

I’m not sure if with age and wisdom we would have any more in common than we did 20+ years ago, but the notion that water does indeed flow over the dam made me feel that the year was off to an emotionally healthy and positive start.
