Sen. Lindsey Graham Says Black People Can Go Anywhere In South Carolina If They’re Conservative

Source: KEN CEDENO / Getty
A hotly contested battle for a U.S. Senate seat in South Carolina is underway, with longtime Republican incumbent Sen. Lindsey Graham set to square off against Democratic challenger Jamie Harrison. During a Friday night debate event, Sen. Graham said that Black residents and immigrants can “go anywhere” in the state as long as their political ideologies shift towards being conservative.
Because Sen. Graham rejected Harrison’s request that he take a coronavirus test ahead of the debate. With Harrison refusing to be in the same place as his opponent, the format of the faceoff shifted to a forum style question and answer session instead and hosted by local outlet News 19 WLTX.
While on location in Spartansburg, S.C., both Graham and Harrison were given 30 minutes of time over the course of an hour to field questions from a panel of moderators on a variety of issues. When pressed about the issue of police reform, Graham seemingly backed a common consensus that police should be reprimanded for wrongdoing but in the same instance saying that nationwide protests are acts of aggression towards keepers of the law.
However, the moment that has proved especially shocking was when Graham seemingly stated that the only path of political and personal success in South Carolina is to embrace conservative values.
“I am asking every African-American out there, look at my record,” Graham said. “I care about everybody, if you are a young African-American, an immigrant, you can go anywhere in this state, you just need to be conservative, not liberal.”
It could be assumed Graham meant “go anywhere” to illustrate that Black South Carolinians can achieve success but only if they are leaning into conservative beliefs and views.
Harrison, who has slammed Graham and the GOP U.S. Senate body for stalling a coronavirus relief bill in favor of placing a conservative Supreme Court Justice on the bench, says that because of his health conditions, he will not debate Graham in a live format unless he takes a test.
Considering that many White House officials, including President Donald Trump, have come down with symptoms stemming from the coronavirus, Graham’s position is understandable.
Polls show the pair are largely tied, with Harrison, who has received tremendous nationwide support along with South Carolina voters getting behind his message, polling slightly ahead in some accounts.

North Carolina Preacher Allegedly Displayed COVID-19 Symptoms During Easter Service

Source: Grafissimo / Getty
A preacher in North Carolina allegedly put his congregation and the public at risk after holding Easter Sunday service while claiming he suffered from COVID-19 symptoms. Pastor Brian Carn of Charlotte was heard on an audio recording defying health guidelines and instructing his members to not mention attending the church service if they become ill.
In a report from local outlet WSOC-TV, it was revealed that an audio recording of the service from Kingdom City Church was made public and it featured damning statements from Carn regarding his health status.
“Does the devil fight my body?” Carn says according to the outlet’s account. “Of course. Just like he fights your body. Did I get the shakes? Yup. Did I cough? Yup. Did I feel pain in my body? Whatever.”
Carn has promised officials at the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department that he will no longer hold services but has yet to confirm whether or not he was stricken by the coronavirus. WSOC also adds in its reporting that a member at Kingdom City Church said that Carn instructing his members to say they attended another church that it was intended to be an inside joke.

South Carolina Cop Charged With Murder For Shooting Unarmed Black Man [VIDEO]
The name Walter Scott will inevitably become the new headliner of the #BlackLivesMatter campaign as he was tragically gunned down by a South Carolina police officer on Saturday, April 4.
As we have grown accustomed to, Scott was unarmed at the time of the incident. The cop, 33-year-old Michael T. Slager, has been charged with murder and the video footage supports the accusation.
The New York Times has the details:
A white police officer in North Charleston, S.C., was charged with murder on Tuesday after a video surfaced showing him shooting and killing an apparently unarmed black man in the back while he ran away.
The officer, Michael T. Slager, 33, had said he feared for his life because the man took his stun gun in a scuffle after a traffic stop on Saturday. A video, however, shows the officer firing eight times as the man — Walter L. Scott, 50 — fled.
The North Charleston mayor announced the state charges at a news conference Tuesday evening.
The shooting comes on the heels of high-profile incidents of police officers using lethal force in New York, Cleveland, Ferguson, Mo., and elsewhere around the country. The deaths have sparked a national debate over whether police are too quick to use force, particularly in cases involving black men.
A White House task force has recommended a host of changes to the nation’s police policies, and President Obama dispatched Attorney General Eric H. Holder Jr., to cities around the country to try to improve police relations with minority neighborhoods.
North Charleston is the state’s third-largest city with a population of about 100,000. African-Americans make up about 47 percent of residents, and whites account for about 37 percent. The city police department is about 80 percent white, according to data collected by the Justice Department in 2007, the most recent period available.
“When you’re wrong, you’re wrong,” Mayor Keith Summey said of the shooting during the news conference. “And if you make a bad decision, don’t care if you’re behind the shield or just a citizen on the street, you have to live by that decision.”
The shooting unfolded after Officer Slager stopped the driver of a Mercedes-Benz with a broken taillight, according to police reports. Mr. Scott ran away, and Officer Slager chased him into a grassy lot that abuts a muffler shop. He fired his Taser, an electronic stun gun, but it did not stop Mr. Scott, according to police reports.
Moments after the struggle, Officer Slager reported on his radio, “Shots fired and the subject is down. He took my Taser,” according to police reports.
But the video, which was taken by a bystander and provided to The New York Times by Mr. Scott’s lawyer, presents a different account. The video begins in the vacant lot, apparently moments after Officer Slager fired his Taser. Wires, which carry the electrical current from the stun gun, appear to be extending from Mr. Scott’s body as the two men tussle and Mr. Scott turns to run.
Something — it is not clear whether it is the stun gun — is either tossed or knocked to the ground behind the two men and Officer Slager draws his gun, the video shows. When the officer fires, Mr. Scott appears to be 15 to 20 feet away and fleeing. He falls after the last of eight shots.
The officer then runs back toward where the initial scuffle occurred and picks something off the ground. Moments later, he drops an object near Mr. Scott’s body, the video shows.
Even with the video evidence, we all witnessed firsthand the cops who killed Eric Garner get let off the hook. The entire world–including Hip-Hop Wired–will be watching this case very closely.

North Carolina Senate Votes To Allow Officials To Refuse To Marry Same-Sex Couples
By Marti Maguire
RALEIGH, N.C., Feb 25 (Reuters) – The North Carolina state Senate voted on Wednesday to allow government officials to refuse to marry same-sex couples without fear of being fired, adding a new twist to the gay marriage debate in a region where such unions have faced strong opposition.
North Carolina, which began allowing gay marriages last year to comply with a federal court order, had banned same-sex matrimony in a 2012 referendum. It is among 37 states where gay marriage is legal.
The U.S. Supreme Court last month agreed to decide whether states can ban gay marriage in a ruling that will determine whether 13 remaining state bans will be struck down.
In North Carolina, some of the civil officers who perform marriages, known as magistrates, threatened to resign rather than perform unions that ran counter to their religious beliefs.
While the bill does not mention gay marriage explicitly, it allows employees to recuse themselves from performing marriages by citing a “sincerely held religious objection.”
After submitting their objections in writing, magistrates would be barred from performing any marriage for six months or until they removed their objections.
Senate leader Phil Berger, the Republican who sponsored the bill, cited a case in his home county in which a magistrate was forced to resign over his refusal to perform gay marriages.
Berger said the bill will allow the state to comply with the law while preserving religious freedom.
“While the courts have taken steps to provide special rights to some, we must not ignore the constitutionally protected rights of others,” Berger said in a statement after the bill passed.
Supporters of gay marriage condemned the legislation, drawing parallels to officials’ past reluctance to perform bi-racial marriages.
“This discriminatory bill treats gay and lesbian couples as second-class citizens and distorts the true meaning of religious freedom,” Reverend Jasmine Beach-Ferrara, director of the Campaign for Southern Equality, said in a statement.
The bill, which also applies to the registers of deeds who issue marriage certificates, would require local governments to ensure that eligible couples are not denied the right to marry.
The bill passed the Republican-controlled Senate by a 32-16 vote and heads next to the Republican-controlled state House, where final action on the bill could come as early as Friday. (Editing by Jonathan Kaminsky and Steve Orlofsky)
