The Bridal Party at Amsale to Open in Garment Center Design Studio

PRESSING ON: Six months after the death of designer Amsale Aberra, the namesake company is moving forward with a new retail concept geared toward bridesmaids.
Starting Sept. 24, bridal parties can schedule appointments at the Amsale creative studio in New York’s garment district. Shoppers will find The Bridal Party at Amsale. The direct-to-consumer approach will give customers a full range of colors, fabrications, sizes, silhouettes and styles of both the Amsale and Nouvelle Amsale Bridesmaids collections. In step with the ever-increasing experiential options at retail, shoppers will have a behind-the-scenes view of the company’s Midtown design studio.
Neil Brown, chief executive officer of Amsale, said the introduction of The Bridal Party at Amsale is a “natural progression” for the brand as the retail landscape is changing. To that end, the way that brides and bridesmaids shop for dresses has “significantly shifted,” he said.
The more personalized shopping experience is designed to play up the attention to detail. There are more than 200 styles from both the Amsale and Nouvelle Amsale Bridesmaids collections. Clients will be encouraged to leaf through the numerous styles and try on different looks and take a close look at the fit of their selections.

Viscose Takes Center Stage in New Student Competition

VIVA VISCOSE: Men’s wear designer Brandon Wen has clinched the inaugural Challenge the Fabric Award, and an accompanying 30,000 euros, an initiative spearheaded by Ekman & Co., the paper and packaging company, and the Swedish Fashion Council.
Held in London during fashion week, the new award encourages sustainable choices among emerging fashion talent and aims to generate awareness around informed fabric choices among fashion industry members and consumers.
The brief was to explore the versatility of viscose, with each finalist presenting selected pieces from their BA lineups along with new designs made out of the eco-friendly fabric.
Wen, a graduate of Royal Academy of Fine Arts Antwerp, said he used his grandmother as inspiration, saying his collection was an attempt at re-creating the atmosphere of Spanish tradition in California.
Using Spanish garments and ceramics as references, alongside research on traditional costume from Burkina Faso, the final lineup, Wen said, was “a celebration of summer, heritage and life, which I think is what my grandmother Carmen is all about.”
He cut, braided and “destroyed” the viscose and used all-natural dyes, including vinegar. “It was practically cooking! One of the other things I worked on was using all of the scraps left over from cutting to create shoulder

Sustainability and Natural Fibers to Take Center Stage at Pitti Filati

MILAN — Sustainability is here to stay.
What was once considered a trend or a marketing tool to appeal to customers has proved to be a crucial path to follow for the fashion industry, starting from the top of its production chain — the yarn makers.
Textile houses increasingly spotlighted eco-friendly features in the collections they presented over the recent editions of Pitti Filati, and the upcoming one is set to make no exception.
Running Jan. 24-26, the Florence-based textile trade show will count 112 exhibitors, 16 of which come from abroad, over a 215,278-square-foot surface at the Fortezza da Basso venue.
Many spinners talked about heightened attention to the environment and a renovated sensibility toward the planet, including the return of the use of natural fibers, as key features in conceiving their spring 2019 textile collections. In addition, multiseasonality emerged as a necessary asset to adapt to ongoing climatic changes and to customers’ demands.
“We will present 10 new yarns, created respecting sustainable principles,” said Filpucci’s president Federico Gualtieri. Among these, the company will introduce the Cera yarn, 100 percent made of Cupro, a natural, biodegradable fiber obtained from cotton scraps and converted into a quality derivative through technological processes. The color palette will reflect the

Michelangelo’s David Takes Center Stage During Pitti

Michelangelo’s David performed double duty Tuesday night in Florence when the iconic marble sculpture was the backdrop for an innovative — and striking — video installation.
In an event on the first night of the Pitti Uomo show, Italian fabric producer Lanificio Luigi Ricceri presented “Fabric as Art,” a presentation by multidisciplinary artist Felice Limosani.
The installation featured 10 of the mill’s fabrics that were projected on the wall behind — and then directly onto — the 17-foot-tall statue.
Following the seven-minute installation, guests were treated to cocktails and small bites at the Galleria dell’Accademia.

Rihanna Takes Center Stage at Bloomingdale’s

Rihanna kept her fans waiting for nearly two hours on Friday at Bloomingdale’s. But no matter. The hard-core Rihanna crowd was happy to sway to her music and mouth every word of every one of her songs played by DJ Pedro. “I’m still in love with you, boy… ” “Time to get schooled,” said the invitation to the launch of the Fenty x Puma by Rihanna fall 2017 collection, which was billed as a pep rally for Fenty U.
Bloomingdale’s second floor — akak Fenty country — was outfitted with a podium that said Fenty U. Props such as bullhorns and pom-poms were strewn about, and about a dozen fans were chosen to sit on benches, like the cheering squad. Given Fenty x Puma items to wear over their clothes by Bloomingdale’s staffers, nobody donned the merchandise, except for the caps.
Asked if this was his scene, Tony Spring, Bloomingdale’s chairman and chief executive officer, said, “This is Rihanna, Fenty and Bloomingdale’s scene. It’s been a good business for us. She has a nice feel for product and style. She’s an icon in the entertainment world and has a true passion for the fashion business. Our culture is influenced by people with

News in Brief: Jeb Bush Inching Podium Closer To Center Of Stage During Commercial Breaks

BOULDER, CO—Speculating that he might be nudging it just a tiny bit with his foot or something, Americans viewing Wednesday’s Republican presidential debate said that candidate Jeb Bush appeared to be inching his podium closer to the center of the stage during the commercial breaks. “I definitely don’t think he was standing that close to the middle before,” said Phoenix resident Jim Rawson, adding that over the course of four commercial breaks, it seemed as if Bush had closed the gap between himself and the center-stage candidates by at least a foot. “I mean, I’m not imagining this, am I?” At press time, Bush was hastily dragging his podium to its original spot after audibly scraping it against that of fellow candidate Ben Carson.

Of Course, Ciara Is The Center Of The Russell Wilson Contract Extension Story

Can the men of Ciara’s life ever get a moment for themselves? First Cici took some heat for the release of Future’s No. 1 album, Dirty Sprite 2 and now she is being slandered following news of a $ 87 million Russell Wilson contract extenstion with the Seattle Seahawks.

Did we mention $ 60 million is guaranteed?

Via Seahawks.com

Wilson’s new deal is just the latest, and given the position he plays, arguably the most important, contract extension handed out by the Seahawks in recent years. When Pete Carroll and John Schneider took over in 2010, they went about building through the draft what would eventually become a championship team. And after loading a roster with talented young players, the next phase became identifying and keeping as much of the core intact as the league’s salary cap would allow.

Wilson, who is now locked up through 2019, has already accomplished an extraordinary amount in his first three seasons in Seattle. Not only did he become the first quarterback to start two Super Bowls in his first three seasons, he is also the winningest quarterback through three seasons with 36 regular-season victories and 42 including the postseason.

Naturally he was happy.

And naturally she was happy for him.

But the cynics couldn’t keep from shining over the news and what we got is plenty of comical memes and what not. Even from Wilson’s peers.

BREAKING: Shooting Event At Chattanooga Reserve Center Has Ended

As details from the Chattanooga reserve center shooting in Tennessee continue to develop, authorities say the event has come to a violent end. The shooting took place at a Navy Reserve center and a military recruiting center in two separate instances, and the investigation to discover why the shooter opened fired is underway.

Chattanooga Mayor Andy Berke is set to address residents of the city regarding what is known about the unnamed Chattanooga shooter according to CNN, NBC News, and ABC News. The shooting was said to have taken place just before 11:00 a.m. local time, although much of this is still speculative.

Around 1:15 p.m. local time, the gunman was taken down, thus putting an end to the harrowing situation although there were some injuries. Reports say that at least two marines and one police officer are among the shooting victims after the gunman fired an unofficial 25-30 rounds at the two facilities.

More from ABC News:

At least three people — two Marines and one police officer — were injured in a shooting today in Chattanooga, Tennessee, according to law enforcement officials.

The shooter has not been identified but is believed to be dead after being neutralized and it is no longer an active shooter situation, sources told ABC News.

There were two scenes of the shooting — one at a Naval Operation Support Center and an Armed Forces Recruiting Center that houses an Army and Marine recruiting office — though all of the injuries are believed to have occurred at the Naval Operation Support Center, according to federal officials.

There are rumors that some Marines working at the Navy reserve center may have been killed, but we caution that these are largely unconfirmed reports.

We will update this post with new information as soon as we can.

Judge Frees Kids She Sent To Juvenile Center For Avoiding Lunch With Father

PONTIAC, Mich. — A judge who sent three children to a juvenile detention center last month for refusing to eat lunch with their father has decided to release them so they can attend summer camp.

Oakland County Circuit Court Judge Lisa Gorcyca lifted her civil contempt order against the Tsimhoni children, ages 9, 10 and 15, at an emergency hearing Friday, ending their more than two weeks of incarceration at the Children’s Village detention center. The judge allowed the kids to immediately be transported to a popular Jewish overnight camp.

“We’re really happy she’s allowed them to come out and enjoy camp like some of their friends,” Lisa Stern, attorney for mother Maya Eibschitz-Tsimhoni, told reporters at the courthouse.

The ruling is the latest twist to a five-year divorce battle between Eibschitz-Tsimhoni and her ex-husband, Omer Tsimhoni. On June 24, Gorcyca found the children in contempt for disobeying her order to have a pleasant lunch with their dad and told them they were “brainwashed,” “defiant” and like members of Charles Manson’s cult, according to a court transcript. Gorcyca, a family court judge, warned she may extend their detention until they turned 18 if they didn’t reconcile with their father.

The judge’s order locking up the children provoked public outrage since it was first reported this week by Fox 2 Detroit. One woman at Friday’s hearing said her kids, classmates of the Tsimhoni children, had written them letters and picketed for their release.

Gorcyca on Friday defended the punishment. She cited her lifelong dedication to working for children’s interests and criticized Fox for starting a “media frenzy” without learning all the facts of the case.

“This was not a punishment. … The court agrees the placement is not ideal,” Gorcyca said, noting that no one had offered an alternative solution. “The decision was made so they could be placed in a setting where they would not be emotionally manipulated by their mother. … My intention was [for the children] to receive independent, objective and caring counseling.”

A Children’s Village staff member told the court that the Tsimhoni children were stable and had shown improvement in counseling sessions. They spent their time interacting with peers, attending summer school, and engaging in activities like hiking and art projects.

Attorneys appointed to represent each child said their clients reported good treatment at Children’s Village, but wanted to return home to their mom. The parents’ attorneys and the children’s court-appointed guardian ad litem, William Lanset, agreed that the children should be taken out of the center.

“The plan has to involve taking them out of Children’s Village, but it cannot involve the mother,” Lanset told the judge before she ruled. “She damaged these children.”

Eibschitz-Tsimhoni currently has custody of the children. Gorcyca and Lanset rebuked the mother for purposely alienated her kids from their father, sabotaging their relationship and visits, missing court dates, and ignoring court orders.

In June, the oldest child told the court he didn’t want to spend time with his dad because he was violent and had hit their mother — an allegation the father denied. Gorcyca said Friday that she had never heard credible evidence of abuse or other wrongdoing by Tsimhoni.

“This father has moved mountains to be part of his children’s life,” the judge said. Tsimhoni visits Michigan often, but lives and works in Israel. He attended Friday’s hearing by phone. His attorney said she would soon be filing a motion for change of custody.

After the hearing, Eibschitz-Tsimhoni objected to complaints about her by Lanset and the judge, and said she has always wanted the children to have a good relationship with their father.

“I’ve never done anything she said about me,” Eibschitz-Tsimhoni said.“The only thing I always said to the court is that love comes with love. … You can’t force somebody to love.”

Each parent will be allowed supervised visits with the children at camp, and will split the costs. They and their attorneys are making plans for the kids to work with an expert or a program to rebuild their relationship with their father.

Kanye West is indeed a blessed man and for his 38th born day, all his friends and family decided to show him how much.

His wife, Kim Kardashian, rented out the Los Angeles Lakers/Clippers house so he and all his celebrity pals could play some basketball.

Via E!

“Kim rented out the Staples Center so Kanye and his boys could play an NBA-style game with real refs and Laker girls!” a source tells E! News exclusively. “John Salley is the announcer. Houston Rockets player James Harden and rapper 2 Chainz are the coaches. John Legend sang the national anthem.”

The insider adds that Justin Bieber, Tyga, Pusha T and all of Kanye’s friends are playing today in addition to NBA stars Russell Westbrook and John Wall. Kobe Bryant, Magic Johnson, Carmelo Anthony, Shaquille O’Neal and Scottie Pippen all made videos that showed up on the jumbotron.

But that’s not all. Kim also surprised Kanye by building a basketball court in their own backyard! The source adds, “He’s obsessed w basketball.”

So how much did renting out the Staples Center cost Kim? The source says she was able to rent out the space for a whopping $ 110,000!

Kim’s sis Khloé Kardashian took to Instagram today to share a pic of Kanye’s special celebration. “Kim rented out staples bitch!!! Him and his boys are going to ball!!!! Happy birthday Yeezy!!!!” Khloé wrote.

So, Kim Kardashian Rented Out Staples Center For Kanye West’s Birthday

The typical birthday involves maybe a nice meal and some presents that come from the heart but aren’t actually all that useful or cool. Kanye West’s birthday is not the average birthday.

And so, Mrs. West, otherwise known as Kim Kardashian, decided to do something a bit more impressive to celebrate Kanye’s special day on Monday. Like rent out Staples Center so the 38-year-old rapper and all his buddies could act like they were Lakers or Clippers or something for a day.

Basically everyone was there, according to TMZ: Russell Westbrook, John Wall, Justin Bieber, James Harden, 2 Chainz, etc. Even John Legend was there singing happy birthday in what honestly looks like a bit of an awkward scene.

There was an NBA finals cake, and Kanye West blowing out an NBA finals cake, and Kim Kardashian taking a photo of Kanye West blowing out an NBA finals cake.

Seems fun. Supposedly it all cost Mrs. West $ 110,000. Oh, and Kylie Jenner was there too, just chilling. Normal day, you know?

‘RuPaul’s Dragcon’ Packs Los Angeles Convention Center

Almost 14,000 people packed the Los Angeles Convention Center for “RuPaul’s Dragcon,” which RuPaul and World of Wonder Productions collaboratively put on May 16-17. Billed as the first drag queen convention in history, “RuPaul’s Dragcon” brought together queens from all seven seasons of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” to meet fans and ki ki throughout the weekend.

“A lot of people just feel really impacted and inspired by drag in ways that I don’t think we, as self-absorbed drag queens, think about that often,” season five winner Jinkx Monsoon says in the above video. “So it’s always nice to be reaffirmed that we do more than just put on a dress and act like a bunch of assholes.”

World of Wonder caught all of the action in a video that gets up close and personal with a number of the girls. Check it out above or head here for more photos of the event.

Neil Patrick Harris, Narciso Rodriguez, Jenna Lyons, and More Come out to Celebrate The Center 2015 Dinner

Neil Patrick Harris and Jeffrey Tambor

After reopening its recently renovated and refreshed home just two months ago, The Center hosted an appropriately lavish celebration last night at Cipriani Wall Street toasting pillars of the LGBT community including actor Jeffrey Tambor, president of MTV and Logo Stephen Friedman, and COO of Combs Enterprises Brian Offutt. Sprinkled inside the former New York Stock Exchange home were actors Neil Patrick Harris, Mary-Louise Parker, and Alan Cumming; a bevy of models including Xiao Wen Ju, Devon Windsor, and Jarah Mariano; and designers such as Narciso Rodriguez, Alexis Bittar (who’s also a newly minted board member), Chris Benz, and Courtney Crangi with Jenna Lyons.

In a crowd filled with so many powerful icons, including Edie Windsor who pioneered the marriage equality movement in the landmark Supreme Court case, what were guests most excited about? “Jeffrey Tambor!” exclaimed Lyons in head-to-toe J.Crew and sporting a new cropped do. Crangi added, “This is a big deal as The Center is such a big part of our culture.” Tambor’s Transparent costar Judith Light, looking resplendent in a Nina Ricci frock punctuated by sparkling earrings from Verdura, beamed over her costar’s award and recalled her fondest memory. “He and I go back a long, long way,” mused Light. “I worked with Jeffrey Tambor at the Milwaukee Repertory Theater and have the most extraordinary memories of him in this one play that we did. It was a Feydeau farce called Cat Among the Pigeons. I would stand behind the set and look at the audience; he was so funny that the audience was practically falling out of the balcony. But he’s an extraordinary human being too. His devotion to this part and this work has been unparalleled.” The work Light referred to is Tambor’s Transparent performance in which he plays a trans woman. “Jeffrey Tambor has really gone out of his way and embodied a part of the LGBT community that I think sometimes doesn’t have such a strong platform for speaking. It’s worth celebrating,” said Chris Benz, creative director of Bill Blass.

Also worth celebrating were the $ 1 million dollars raised last night between the private donations and live auction items which included a walk-on role in Transparent and tickets to the MTV Video Music Awards this summer. But the main focus on the night was The Center’s new youth programs. “I’ve known about The Center for 24 years and utilized it,” said Bittar in a summery suit. “Tonight, they’re talking about the first-ever teen LGBT outpatient treating addiction in the USA. First ever.” Serving youths between the ages of fourteen and 22, “it’s such an important need in the gay community where addiction of all types is prevalent.”

With 300,000 visitors to The Center every year, Tambor was thrilled with the large turnout and the donations but felt that there’s always room for improvement. “This is a very, very important event,” said the actor. “The awards are tremendous but we’re here to raise awareness. To bring light and awareness takes money. And the revolution takes money. I’m here to be a part of that.”

Why Center Parts Were Made for ’70s Flares: Gisele Bündchen, Olivia Palermo, and More

Poppy Delevingne

Spring’s romance with all things seventies has resulted in a recent wave of nostalgic looks, from lanky school-girl hair to bohemian waves and shots of Rollergirl glamour. Now, the decade is ushering in a new hybrid beauty-fashion pairing in the form of simple middle-parted hair worn with easy flared pants. Spotted in Paris, Poppy Delevingne channeled Almost Famous with finger-raked curls, oversize square frames, a frothy fur jacket, and jeans; while Olivia Palermo put an uptown stamp on the style with a smooth center divide and crisp denim. Over in New York, Gisele Bündchens signature waves and nude makeup were a natural match for the modern cool of beige bell-bottoms. Even Chrissy Teigen paired her wide-leg pants with a refreshingly undone texture we’d love to see more of this season. Just in time for Sunday brunch, here are four reasons to give your skinnies the day off and take your bedhead (or blowout) into the sun.

Interview: The Vaselines at the Cedar Cultural Center

Recently, I sat down to interview The Vaselines, a Scottish indie band of immense cult appeal.

The story of The Vaselines differs greatly from the classic example of a band’s steady rise to fame. Originally formed in 1986, the band, initially only comprised of Scotland natives Eugene Kelly and Frances McKee, could at the time, be thought of more as a fun experiment conducted by two young musicians than a band tenaciously seeking fame. The band’s superbly crafted songs embodied a carefree spirit, and appealed to listeners of pop rock as well as punk rock.

One such fan of theirs was Kurt Cobain, the late front man for Nirvana. By the time The Vaselines’ first album had been released in 1989, they had broken up. However, with the rise of Nirvana’s career, it was Cobain who implored them to regroup, asking them if they would support Nirvana during their stay in Scotland on their 1991 European tour.

The supplemental recognition brought on by Nirvana came and went, though. McKee and Kelly soon went back to their lives, as well as other musical projects.

Although they remained friendly, the band endured an extensive break. Then, in 2008, they reunited and decided to continue touring on and off, releasing two albums since their reunification: 2010’s Sex with an X and 2014’s V for Vaselines.

Their repertoire can be thought of as fun and reckless, lacquered in youthful ambitions and served with brash, boisterous bursts of instrumentation.

This piece is the first in a two-part series, and it is a pattern that I intend to emulate in my future blog posts. For every act that I blog about, I will post a transcription of our interview first, followed by a show review. Such a review will be posted shortly after this blog.

On Thurs., Jan. 22, I had the chance to sit down with the original odd couple of indie rock. Here is what transpired:

——

How’s the tour been?

EK: Great.

FM: Yeah, pretty good.

EK: It’s been fun. We’re really enjoying it. Sometimes you get daunted when you see two weeks of shows ahead of you and the shadow is kind of intense, but We’ve got one day off, 14 days. So you get into that and you think: ‘What am I getting into?’ but then you get on tour, and —

FM: You get into the rhythm of it and you don’t have to think about anything else for two weeks. You don’t even know what’s going on in the world after a while.

I was wondering: which songs of yours are your favorites to play live?

EK: I like the new ones because they’re fresher. The older ones, we’ve only been playing them for the last six years. Frances last night zoned out during one of the old songs and started singing when we shouldn’t be singing. [Frances laughs] Sometimes you can do that, but basically it was a laid-back song.

FM: My mind wandered a little bit.

EK: So the new ones keep you focused, because you’re still getting them rather than just kind of concentrating on lyrics.

Seeing as now that you’re writing new songs as The Vaselines, how have your songwriting routines changed?

EK: A bit.

FM: We’re more structured about it. When we wrote Dum Dum, some of those songs just materialized from the time we spent together as a couple.

EK: Yeah, it’s more formal. Frances comes to the house, we send each other things beforehand, and we get time to sit down and write lyrics.

FM: We were much more prepared for both Sex With An X and the new album. We knew what we wanted, and we had also our solo projects, so we were much more experienced in the studio.

EK: Twenty years ago, we didn’t really know what we were doing. It was a brand new experience for us as we were learning how to write songs. It was totally intuitive and what came out was just an outpouring.

How often do you two write songs?

EK: We only write when we know we’re going to make a record.

FM: Well, you write…

EK: I’ve got ideas inside but I don’t finish things often. For The Vaselines, when I’m writing I just play guitar every couple of days and I’ll put things aside and record them. We put things away, and when we decided to this record, it was like: ‘What have we got?’ We only sit down and write Vaselines songs and finish them if we know we’re going to go into the studio and make a record. We don’t have tons of songs.

FM: We bring ideas to the table. I was talking to someone about albums and how musicians keep putting out records, and it does seem like a machine, you know. Bands — they record a record and then they tour the record, then they record another record — it’s just too much.

Yeah, it seems kind of inorganic.

FM: Yeah, and as a musician, as a songwriter, you need time to write the songs. Otherwise, you’re just turning things out. That’s the way we’d like to be.

EK: You need to live some life to get experiences to be inspired by things. You can’t just like get in this hamster wheel.

FM: In the words of Jeffrey Lewis, you get the blowjob and then you write the song after.

The music of The Vaselines is ripe with religious elements. There are referential lyrics in many of your songs, and the music video for Sex With an X has you two in religious garb. What are your attitudes towards religion in general? I get the feeling you’re poking fun at it.

FM: I think we have a healthy disregard for it.

EK: A healthy respect and disregard. I think if people want to believe in something, that’s fine. I think we went through a Catholic upbringing, and we came out the other side of it not really believing in it, so we kind of started to poke fun at ourselves, making fun of the way we were brought up, and not really taking a pass at anyone else.

FM: Well, I think it’s making fun of a culture reference, and it’s something that we know, and so it’s our healthy disregard for it.

EK: It’s kind of shaped in your formative years. You’re getting all of this religion, so it’s kind of something we write about. It’s quite an experience and I experienced a lot of it. I mean, I was an altar boy for about five years, and I was there every week, twice a week, and it’s something that’s still there — you can’t escape it.

FM: Funnily enough, someone asked me at the Chicago show last night: ‘Were you really a nun?’ ‘Was that real?’ (laughs)

EK: We like to dress up like actors. We like to dress up and show off. We thought: ‘What could we dress up as?’ So we dressed up as a priest and a nun.

Speaking of dressing up, I also liked your video for Crazy Lady.

FM: (Laughs)

I didn’t see the ending coming!

EK: Yeah!

FM: I watched it with my kids and my wee girl got really upset. And my son said: ‘How did you get to all of those places?’ Because we filmed it in one day. ‘How did you get to Moscow and Vienna?’

EK: Because it makes no sense at all. It’s really short — it’s like two-and-a-half minutes long and you think: ‘That doesn’t make any sense… I have to watch it again.’

One thing I liked was when it showed you two traveling to different cities, the map has some outdated countries. I saw Austria-Hungary on the map.

FM: Uh-huh!

EK: And also, one of the cities we go to is Venice, but that was a mistake. It was supposed to be Vienna. We had to speak with the director and we had a lot of ideas, and then he went away and wrote the script, and none of us noticed that it said Venice. We thought: ‘Venice, great!’ but it’s supposed to be Vienna.

FM: We had really good fun doing it. We had different directions for those two videos, but I think we like to have our sense of humor come across in our videos because that’s who we are.

So the Nirvana connection is well known, and I feel like you two get that a lot, so I’m just going to ask one simple question about that: I’d like each of you to tell me what your favorite memory of that band is.

EK: I think for me, it was actually getting to sing with him at the Reading Festival. I got onstage with him and I sang a song. I’d never been to a festival before, and I wound up there just by chance. I played a show with Hole and Mudhoney the night before, and I was supposed to come home in the van, but I ended up onstage. It was such an amazing experience. That’s my personal favorite. Beat that (Kelly leans over to McKee and mockingly points at her, laughing)!

FM: Well, I maybe can! They came to Edinburgh and asked if we’d support them. We had split up by then, but we went to Edinburgh and I didn’t know who they were, or anything about them, but as the evening progressed, we all got pretty drunk, and as we were all leaving, I got a nice kiss from Kurt Cobain. Beat that (McKee turns to Kelly and points back at him. Kelly mockingly exclaims aloud as if his story has been beaten.)!

On the cheek?

FM: I couldn’t possibly comment… Of course it was on the cheek! The bum cheek (laughs). Only there on the first night.

So after the tour, what’s next for The Vaselines? Do you have any immediate plans?

FM: Dumfries (laughs).

EK: We fly from LA to Scotland, and then we drive next morning to Dumfries, and then we drive straight back and go to sleep for a week. And then we have nothing after that. There’s talk of maybe Japan, but nothing’s even penciled in. What’s the next step? Is there a next step? Is this it? We can work with that, it’s just that we don’t really know what’s happening until it happens.

That seems to be kind of your style, though. You kind of just do it when you want to do it.

EK: Yeah.

FM: Yes. Yeah — we don’t answer to the man.

EK: Yeah — we are the man.

FM: There’s no man.

EK: When we were touring the last record, there was a year gap where we kind of had to say: ‘What — is this it? Are we not going to take any offers for shows, or are we going to not record anymore, or…’ And then we said: ‘Well, let’s just see what we can do. Let’s see if we can write another record,’ and here we are. We’ll have that meeting at some point and we’ll decide what’s going to happen.

This question’s just for you, Eugene. I read in an interview somewhere that said you were interested in writing a musical-

FM: Well, that’s on the cards. We wanted to do: ‘The Vaselines, the Musical [here, she says: “I like to call it”] The Next Stage [it’s ambiguous whether she’s continuing the title or if the musical is the “next stage” of their careers.].

So you think that’s a possible future?

EK: I mean — it’s just fun to talk about it. The reason I say that is because I wrote three songs for different theater shows and it was just good to see actors singing your song in a big production, and I just thought: ‘Great, I would love to write more and let people do all of the work’ (laughs). You just sit there as a writer with a cigar (imitates smoking a fat cigar) and be like ‘Oh, yes…’ (he says this with a heaving exhale). We’ve had an idea for something for years and had never really got right to doing it, so… but it’s kind of just pie in the sky right now.

FM: With tap dancing and everything.

EK: A Vaselines musical would be great, though. We’d have to get a story together and-

FM: We have a story!

It could be about The Vaselines!

FM: Of course it could! We could just turn all of our songs into musical numbers.

You said before, too, that you want your lyrics to be universal, so they’re up for interpretation.

FM: Exactly

If either of you weren’t musicians, what do you think you’d be doing now?

FM: Well, I’m not always a musician.

EK: Frances has got a life (laughs).

FM: (Laughs) I’ve got a life, thank god.

EK: I don’t know. I’ve often thought about that. If Nirvana hadn’t existed and hadn’t recorded those songs, where would my life be? The things I was doing at the time, I was doing graphic design and I was interested in music, so still probably music.

FM: I think acting. Maybe not in the same theater company, but I think we were both aspiring actors at one point.

EK: Yeah, just in youth theater, and drama workshops, and improv.

FM: I was really bad at remembering lines actually.

EK: Yeah, I noticed that last night, actually during one of the songs.

FM: (laughs)

Well, as far as questions I’ve prepared, that’s pretty much all of them.

FM: You didn’t ask the most biting question of all that I get asked every night: ‘Are you guys on tour?’

[Sarcastically] Yeah are you on tour? Wait — you guys are on tour, right?

FM: (laughs)

EK: It’s funny you say that. I couldn’t believe people actually asked that.

OK, what’s the worst question you’ve ever been asked?

FM: ‘Are you guys ever coming back?’

EK: We’re here, and we probably won’t come back for years, and they ask us: ‘When are you coming back?’ We’re here now!

FM: I know! Just be in the moment!

EK: One night only. We’ll never come back here again.

FM: Except I’m not that rude (laughs).

EK: People shout out for solo songs, and it’s just like — ‘We can’t do it…’ Today is for The Vaselines; we’re doing Vaselines songs.

——

Shortly after the interview, I attempted to take a photo of the band. I soon realized that the camera, which was lent to me, had not been charged and did not have any charging chord with it in the case.

However, Eugene was kind enough to let me use his iPhone to take their photo. Admittedly, the photo is not optimal — it’s slightly blurry, and it did not adequately capture the lighting of the room we were in.

Despite this blunder of mine, there is a silver lining. I did, after all, get to use his iPhone to take his photo.

Frances and Eugene have had their picture taken many times over, but how many fans have taken their photo using one of their cameras? I think that qualifies as the cherry-on-top for this interview.

New York Fashion Week Gets the Boot From Lincoln Center

2014-12-18-modelswalking1024x681.jpg

It’s official: New York Fashion Week is getting the boot from Lincoln Center.

Following much debate, the Supreme Court of the State of New York has ruled that IMG Fashion will not renew its sublicense agreement with Lincoln Center, which expires in February following the Fall/Winter 2015 shows. According to court documents unearthed today by local blog A Walk in the Park, the lease was in violation of a city charter prohibiting using the space for non-park purposes including the temporary use of space for show tents and production equipment.

But what does this mean for the future of New York Fashion Week? Basically, it will force fashion week organizers to scramble to find a new location for its September shows, as its permanent home in Hudson Yards’ Culture Shed is still several years away from completion. While a number of high-profile designers chose to move their runway shows and presentations away from Lincoln Center last season (Diane von Furstenberg and Michael Kors when to Spring Studios, Prabal Gurung to Skylight at Moynihan Station, Alexander Wang to Pier 94, to name just a few) 69 shows still chose to call the site home. So basically, it’s anyone’s guess as to where NYFW could be headed from here.

For the sake of our expense accounts, our vote goes for one central location (with plenty of sidewalk access — for the model street style, of course).

Michelle Obama Dresses To Impress At Opening Of Anna Wintour's Costume Center

It’s here! Met Gala day 2014 is here!

We’ve been flipping out over a Michelle Obama sighting at the opening of Anna Wintour’s Costume Center since we first found out she might be there last week. Now, the wait is finally over. FLOTUS arrived in New York on Monday to commemorate the opening and she obviously dressed to impress Vogue’s editor-in-chief in a green, long-sleeved floral Naeem Khan dress. The ensemble is a bit more casual than her stunner from Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, but the First Lady still looked lovely.

She also took the opportunity to share some adorable moments with Wintour, who we’re not used to seeing quite so… cuddly.

Guests of the ceremony include some of the biggest names in the fashion industry, from Calvin Klein to Victoria Beckham to Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen. Other attendees couldn’t hold in their excitement from inside the venue, taking to Instagram and Twitter to share some sneak peeks of the newly renovated building.

Could this mean… an appearance at the Met Gala? You know, she’s already in town and all. It seems silly for her to leave before all the fun starts. Enjoy your first Michelle sighting of the day while we countdown and daydream about outfit options for tonight.
