Britain’s royal family attend Christmas Day church service

Why Go To Church?

A church goer wrote a letter to the editor of a newspaper and complained that it made no sense to go to church every Sunday. “I’ve gone for 30 years
now,” he wrote, “and in that time I have heard something like 3,000 sermons. But for the life of me, I can’t remember a single one of them. So, I
think I’m wasting my time and the pastors are wasting theirs by giving sermons at all.”

This started a real controversy in the “Letters to the Editor” column, much to the delight of the editor. It went on for weeks until someone wrote
this clincher: “I’ve been married for 30 years now. In that time my wife has cooked some 32,000 meals. But, for the life of me, I cannot recall the
entire menu for a single one of those meals. But I do know this. They all nourished me and gave me the strength I needed to do my work. If my wife had
not given me these meals, I would be physically dead today.

Likewise, if I had not gone to church for nourishment, I would be spiritually dead today!”

Parking Problem at Church

A few years ago, I caught a story on the radio about a Baptist church that had a problem. It was with the Methodists down the street. Some Baptists
were unable to find a space in their own parking lot because members of the nearby Methodist church, which met earlier than the Baptists, got there
first. So the Baptist church had a problem.

Now, they COULD have towed the Methodist’s cars away. Or, they COULD have patrolled their lot Sunday mornings. Or, they COULD have written a letter to
the offending church members imploring them to park elsewhere. But they didn’t.

Instead, they did something else. One Sunday morning they stuck a bumper sticker to every car in the lot — Baptist and Methodist alike. They all got
one. The sticker read: “I’M PROUD TO BE A BAPTIST!”

No more problem.

At Synod Opening Pope Francis Reminds Everyone That The Catholic Church Is Against Gay Marriage

Pope Francis on Sunday reaffirmed Catholic opposition to gay marriage as he opened a three-week gathering of bishops from around the world but said the Church had to show love and understanding towards all.

Francis presided at a solemn Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica to open the meeting, known as a synod, on the theme of the family in the modern world.

But the run-up to the synod, attended by some 300 bishops and other delegates, has been dominated by gay issues.

On the eve of the gathering, the Vatican dismissed a Polish priest from his Holy See job after he came out as gay and called for changes in Catholic teachings against homosexual activity.

Conservative Catholics held a conference in Rome just before the synod started on how homosexuals can live by Church’s rules that they should be chaste while Catholic gay activists held another demanding full acceptance of active gays in the Church.

Francis dedicated one third of his homily to the topic of love between man and woman and its role in procreation.

“This is God’s dream for his beloved creation: to see it fulfilled in the loving union between a man and a woman, rejoicing in their shared journey, fruitful in their mutual gift of self,” he said.

He also spoke of the “true meaning of the couple and of human sexuality in God’s plan,” a clear reference to heterosexual marriage.

But Francis also stressed that the Church must be more welcoming, charitable, compassionate and merciful to all people, particularly those whose lives have been wounded and who those find it difficult to adhere to all of the Church’s regulations.

The leader of the 1.2 billion member Church said the person “who falls or errs must be understood and loved.”

“The Church must search out these persons, welcome and accompany them, for a Church with closed doors betrays herself and her mission, and, instead of being a bridge, becomes a roadblock,” he said.

In its explanation of the firing of the Polish monsignor on Saturday, the Vatican said his very public coming out was intended to put undue media pressure on the synod on gay issues, which are expected to be only a small part of the bishops’ discussions.

The story made the front page of nearly all Italian newspapers, with one headline calling it “An Earthquake in the Vatican”.

At a preliminary synod last year, bishops watered down a initial statement that was seen as a major change of tone toward homosexuals. That statement spoke of “gifts and qualities” of homosexuals but was changed after a backlash by conservatives.

One key topic at the synod will be how to reach out to Catholics who have divorced and remarried in civil ceremonies.

They are considered by the Church to be still married to their first spouse and living in a state of sin. Some bishops want a change to the rules that bars them from receiving sacraments such as communion.

Last month, Francis made it simpler and swifter for Catholics to secure a marriage annulment, the most radical such reform for 250 years, and told bishops to be more welcoming to divorced couples.

Ahead Of Pope’s U.S. Visit, Survey Finds Many Catholics Disagree With Church On LGBT Families

Just weeks ahead of Pope Francis’ visit to the United States for the World Meeting of Families, a major international Catholic festival that kicks off Sept. 21 in Philadelphia, a new survey shows that many Catholics are widely more accepting than church hierarchy of families led by parents who are gay, unmarried, single or divorced.

Nine in 10 Catholic Americans say that a family led by a mother and a father is an “ideal situation,” according to the Pew Research Center’s report, which was released Wednesday. At the same time, nearly half of Catholics say that children being raised by an unmarried couple is “acceptable and as good as any other arrangement,” while more than 4 in 10 Catholics say the same of gay and lesbian couples who raise kids.

Francis, who will address an estimated 1.5 million people during a World Meeting of Families Mass in Philadelphia, is expected to speak frequently about Catholic views of the importance of the family during Masses, speeches and high-level meetings that also will take him to Washington, D.C., and New York.

While the pope has made several friendly gestures toward LGBT people, including his famous “who am I to judge” remarks on gay priests, he has also spoken out against efforts to “redefine the very institution of marriage” and has warned of “ideological colonization that tries to destroy the family.” In October, Francis and high-level bishops will gather at the Vatican for the church’s synod on the family, which will likely address divorce and LGBT Catholics.

Speaking at the annual conference of the Religion Newswriters Association in Philadelphia, where Pew revealed the survey results, Pew Associate Director of Research Greg Smith said Saturday that he was “struck by the high level of dissent” from church teachings by self-identified Catholics, who are “very accepting of nontraditional families.”

“Catholic opinions look an awful lot like U.S. opinions as a whole” on issues such as sexuality and marriage, Smith said.

At the same time, he said, Catholics are “also quite loyal to the church despite any misgivings” about its positions on hot-button issues. Seven in 10 said they could never leave the church, “no matter what.” Close to 6 in 10 also said abortion is a sin. Greater than half said that devotion to Mary and receiving sacraments, such as communion, are “essential” to being Catholic.

There are “major differences between Catholics who attend Mass regularly and those who do not,” Smith said. Catholics who attend Mass at least once a week are much more likely to agree with church positions on sexuality, marriage and other controversial issues.

Pew’s report on the survey noted that although it was conducted before the Vatican’s June 18 release of the pope’s encyclical on human ecology and climate change — a topic he’s expected to highlight during speeches to Congress and the United Nations — “Pope Francis may have a difficult time persuading Catholics in the U.S. to adopt his philosophy about excess and his focus on the environment.”

Six in 10 Catholics told the organization that helping the poor is essential to being Catholic, yet just half gave the same response regarding combating climate change.

“Catholics are divided on the question of whether it is sinful to spend money on luxuries without also giving to the poor, but large majorities say it is not a sin to live in a house larger than needed or to use energy without concern for the impact on the environment,” the report said.

The survey, which asked questions of 5,122 adult Americans, including 1,016 Catholics, was conducted between May 5 and June 7 with a 3.5 percentage point margin of error among Catholics.

Foo Fighters Rock All Over Westboro Baptist Church In Expert Protest Troll

You just got played, Westboro Baptist Church.

The notorious hate group, known for picketing funerals and public events for attention, protested an old foe, the Foo Fighters, before the band’s concert in Kansas City Friday, the Kansas City Star reported.

But the Foo Fighters fought back. Led by frontman Dave Grohl, they trolled the demonstrators by blaring Rick Astley’s 1987 hit “Never Gonna Give You Up” from a pickup as they rode in the back. Band members also held up signs that read “You got Rick roll’d” and “Keep it clean.”

Look at the fun they’re having:

Rickrolling,” originally a bait-and-switch prank in which people are lured into clicking Internet links of interest that instead open to Rick Astley’s song, has been around for several years but is used to maximum effect here.

The Foo Fighters also took on Westboro protesters in Kansas City in 2011, singing a gay love song to counter the group’s anti-gay views.

Westboro founder Fred Phelps had written: “[The Foo Fighters] have a platform and should be using it to encourage obedience to God; instead they teach every person who will listen all things contrary to him: fornication, adultery, idolatry, fags.”

We say the Foo Fighters just won this round as well.

Get in touch with your inner bowel movement! That’s where truth resides. Don’t be offended when someone tells you you’re full of shit. Embrace it with the ecstasy accorded revelation. They may think they’re cursing you for some infraction, but they’re really offering a friendly reminder, rising you from your sleep, and exhorting you to meet your maker–which in this case happens to be you. Yes when it comes to shit you shouldn’t have trouble experiencing the oft touted sense of agency. Did you ever think you would welcome being called a piece of shit? But when you think of it, what else are you? Though few people acknowledge the fact. Shit is what defines you. It’s your one creative act of the day provided you don’t suffer from irregularity. Laxatives and anti-diarrhetics like Imodium are the altar boys, the acolytes of your church of shit. There should be a prayer that begins “Our shit who art within us, hallowed by thy name…” It is one of the perversities of civilization that shit lies at the bottom of the food chain and that toilets are looked at as the lowest rung on the hierarchy of household appliances, when, in fact, a toilet should be accorded the status of a bible. You may not be able to keep one by the side of your bed, but you’re likely to need one when you seek to lighten your burden. Push to pray. That’s the catechism. Lord, free me to get it out!

Charleston Church Shooting Judge Is Known To Say The N-Word

Charleston County Magistrate James B. Gosnell Jr. has already proven himself to be a questionable choice to preside over the Charleston church shooting case. At the initial hearing for Dylann Roof, the 20-year-old suspected off killing nine innocent Black people on June 17, Gosnell angered many when he divided his sympathy between the victims and Roof’s family, who have been perceived through many reports for letting him fly off the handle due to a lack of parenting.

If that wasn’t enough to get the outrage boiling, the judge also went out of his way to make mention of a bond for the separate gun charge when the nine murders charges made it meaningless to bring up.

Now, just like Roof’s and the families of the victims, the back story of Gosnell is being probed and it has been discovered that he was once publicly reprimanded for openly saying the n-word in court.

In November 2003, Gosnell said he repeated a phrase to a Black defendant that he had heard a Black sheriff’s deputy say out loud at a bond hearing.

“There are four kinds of people in this world… Black people, white people, red necks, and n——,” as learned by The Daily Beast. The reported reasoning for saying the “ill-considered” statement was to get the young defendant to turn his life around.

The South Carolina Supreme Court’s website has official record of the judicial disciplinary order that was issued in October 2005. The next scheduled court date for the Roof case is on October 23.

Larry Wilmore Takes Fox News To Task Over Charleston Church Shooting Coverage

Larry Wilmore isn’t too pleased with Fox News’ coverage of the church massacre in Charleston, South Carolina. Then again, this shouldn’t come as a surprise.

This time, the late night talk show host, who initially declared he wouldn’t discuss the shooting on his comedy-based platform, later changed his mind and shared choice words about the network.

“I know we talk about race a lot on this show, but I think we can all agree this time that this is a racially motivated attack,” he said. “It couldn’t be clearer when it comes out of the killer’s mouth. But even with all of that evidence, on a day like today, Fox News just makes my f***king head explode.”

The host then played a series of clips from Fox News’ coverage which questioned whether Roof’s motives were targeted towards black people or Christians.

“I know you guys don’t want to admit that racial stuff isn’t going on, but how can there be any doubt when it came out of the gunman’s mouth? He told his victims, ‘I want to shoot black people,’” Wilmore said. “I think when he says black people, he means black people – and not Christians.”

Wilmore also highlighted presidential candidate Rick Santorum calling the shooting an “assault on religious liberty” and Santorum’s confusion of the shooter’s motives other than it being a “crime of hate.” The comedian-writer cited the 1963 bombing of the 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama as one similarly horrific incident that didn’t require anyone to wonder the killers’ intent.

“Let me give you an example,” Wilmore explained. “Four black girls were murdered in a church bombing in Birmingham, Alabama, in 1963. Back then, no one pretended to wonder what the motivation was. If you tried to say it was about religion, even the perpetrators back then would have corrected you.”

Check out more of Larry Wilmore’s thoughts in the clip above.

Jon Stewart Says He Can’t Tell Jokes After Charleston Church Shooting

Jon Stewart makes his living turning the news into jokes. But on the day after a racially motivated massacre left nine dead at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, South Carolina, Stewart said he had no jokes to tell.

“I have one job, and it’s a pretty simple job,” he said on “The Daily Show” on Thursday night. “I come in in the morning, and we look at the news and I write jokes about it.”

He continued:

“But I didn’t do my job today, so I apologize. I got nothing for you in terms of jokes and sounds, because of what happened in South Carolina. And maybe if I wasn’t near the end of the run, or this wasn’t such a common occurrence, maybe I could’ve pulled out of the spiral. But I didn’t. And so, I honestly have nothing other than just sadness once again that we have to peer into the abyss of the depraved violence that we do to each other and the nexus of a just gaping racial wound that will not heal yet we pretend doesn’t exist.”

But having been down this road too many times, he also knows what will happen next. Or, rather, what won’t happen next.

“By acknowledging it — by staring into that and seeing it for what it is — we still won’t do jackshit,” he said. “Yeah, that’s us. And that’s the part that blows my mind.”

Stewart ripped those who suggest this is one person who lost his mind rather than the product of that “gaping racial wound.”

“In South Carolina, the roads that black people drive on are named for Confederate generals who fought to keep black people from being able to drive freely on that road,” he said. “The Confederate flag flies over South Carolina, and the roads are named for Confederate generals. And the white guy’s the one who feels like his country’s being taken away from him.”

Stewart didn’t do any humor segments. Instead, he devoted the rest of the show to his interview with Malala Yousafzai, the teenager who won the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize.

“I don’t think there’s anyone else in the world I’d rather talk to tonight,” he said.

Charleston: 9 People Killed In Shooting At Historic Black Church

Police in Charleston, S.C. have confirmed multiple fatalities after a shooting inside one of the oldest Black AME churches in the nation. A White gunman, who remains at large, opened fire at the Emanuel AME Church Wednesday night shooting and killing nine people.

Reports YAHOO! News:

Police described the suspect as a 21-year-old white man in a sweatshirt or hoodie and jeans, according to Charleston newspaper The Post and Courier. It cited unconfirmed reports that as many as eight people may have been hit by gunfire.

Charleston Police Department spokesman Charles Francis said the shooting occurred at the Emanuel AME Church around 9 p.m. local time.

He said police were still searching for a suspect, and he had no information on victims. Further details were not immediately available.

North Carolina television station WGHP, a Fox affiliate, reported on its website that some of the victims may have died.

Local broadcaster WCSC reported that the FBI was on the scene. The FBI could not be immediately reached to comment.

The website for the church said it has one of the largest and oldest black congregations in the region.

The church was built in 1891 and is considered a historically significant building, according to the National Park Service.

“We’re still gathering information so it’s not the time yet for details,” said Mayor Joe Riley. “I will say that this is an unspeakable and heartbreaking tragedy in this most historic church, an evil and hateful person took the lives of citizens who had come to worship and pray together.”

Church pastor, Clementa Pinckney, was among those killed. Authorities were still in the process of identifying the exact number of fatalities at press time.

Bill Maher Compares Police Unions To The Catholic Church On ‘Real Time’

Bill Maher doesn’t understand why American police are “infallible.”

On “Real Time with Bill Maher” Friday night, the host compared police unions to the Catholic Church, saying both have an infrastructure that has historically protected members who abuse power.

“In the Catholic Church, of course not every priest was a pedophile,” Maher said. “But the institution covered up for the pedophiles. And this is what I see [with the police].”

Elsewhere in the episode, Maher spoke about Sen. Bernie Sanders’ announced candidacy for president, and interviewed Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz about the “opportunity cost” of the Iraq War.

Sergei Polunin’s ‘Distant Cousin’ Sort Of Slays Hozier’s ‘Take Me To Church’

Remember that hauntingly beautiful viral video of ballet dancer and pinacle of half-naked beauty Sergei Polunin dancing his broken heart out to Hozier’s “Take Me To Church“? Well, if you loved that, you may sort of kind of like his distant cousin’s rendition.

Actor and dancer Tim Lacatena plays Polunin’s so-called cousin, and, while he’s no Polunin, he’s not half bad. Donning a similarly revealing nude ensemble, Lacatena prances through the streets of Los Angeles, twirling through the Santa Monica Pier, leaping before the Church of Scientology and freaking a lot of people out in the process.

Dance on, bro.

San Francisco’s Evangelical City Church Will No Longer Ask LGBT Members To Be Celibate

(RNS) A prominent evangelical Christian church in San Francisco has announced it will no longer ask members who are lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender to remain celibate.

“We will no longer discriminate based on sexual orientation and demand lifelong celibacy as a precondition for joining,” senior pastor Fred Harrell Sr. and six board members of City Church, one of the largest members of the Reformed Church in America denomination, wrote in a letter emailed to members Friday (March 13).

The church, which claims about 1,000 attendees and meets at two San Francisco locations, has long welcomed LGBT persons to attend, but has required lifelong celibacy of those LGBT persons seeking membership.

“Imagine feeling this from your family or religious community,” the letter states. “‘If you stay, you must accept celibacy with no hope that you too might one day enjoy the fullness of intellectual, spiritual, emotional, psychological and physical companionship. If you pursue a lifelong partnership, you are rejected.’ This is simply not working and people are being hurt. We must listen and respond.”

City Church’s action places it in the ranks of at least two other large, urban evangelical congregations that have reversed their policies requiring celibacy for gay members. In January, both GracePointe Church in Nashville, Tenn., and Seattle’s EastLake Community Church reversed their celibacy policies.

The policy of many evangelical denominations and independent churches is that homosexuality is “incompatible” with the Bible and therefore cannot be tolerated among members, or the broader society.

Albert Mohler, president of the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, tweeted his displeasure with City Church on Friday, calling their decision a cave-in to secular society and “tragic.”

In Nashville, the pastor’s announcement of the change from the pulpit was greeted with a standing ovation.

But there have been costs, too. Giving, attendance and membership declined at GracePointe immediately after it changed its stance, and two board members at City Church have resigned, according to the letter.

Laura Turner, communications coordinator for City Church (and a blogger for Religion News Service), said City Church’s leadership spent nine months debating the new policy as well as reading the gospel, books by evangelical theologians and social science research.

“Churches are slowly coming to recognize that if God is bringing people to them who are LGBT they have to meet them where they are and not demand that they change,” Turner said. “Telling LGBT people they have to change before they can become Christians is leading to depression, suicide and addiction and we won’t do that anymore.”

Books: “How’m I Doin’?” Two Years In, Vatican Expert Talks Pope Francis, Women In The Church & What’s Next

2015-03-06-1425623246-5391436-timthumb.jpg

THE FRANCIS MIRACLE
By John L. Allen Jr.
($ 27; Time)

If you’ve paid any attention to news coverage of the Catholic Church at any point in the last 15 to 20 years, chances are you’ve seen or heard from John L. Allen Jr. Now on staff at The Boston Globe and a key contributor to their Catholic news website Crux, Allen has been covering the Vatican since he first headed to Rome in 1998. At the time, it was a backwater to most news outlets and almost no American media had a presence on the ground. So Allen had this beat almost to himself as far as US audiences were concerned.

After learning Italian and building up contacts, Allen found himself with an increasing worldwide audience thanks to the growth of the internet. In 2001, of course 9-11 made the “clash of civilizations” and Christianity and Islam central issues. Plus there were hot topics like the never-ending child molestation and cover-up scandals roiling country after country and finally the death of Pope John Paul II. The Vatican was hot again and Allen was here, there and everywhere, delivering solid journalism and working as a key analyst for outlets like CNN. Any other journalist helicoptering into the Vatican for a big event knew they could get a succinct quote and solid insight from Allen. (So, at times, could bishops and cardinals who wanted a little background on the latest news when they’d been out of the country. It never hurts to be a trusted source for your sources)

Allen has also written a string of increasingly confident books, including not one but two biographies of the man who would become Pope Benedict as well as a demystifying look at Opus Dei. Now with his latest work The Francis Miracle, Allen turns his eye on the pope with popularity ratings a movie star would envy as well as a Reagan-like ability to overcome any momentary stumbles in his off-the-cuff remarks simply because people like him. As Allen has put it, with Pope Benedict everyone felt the things they disliked about the Catholic Church were because of him. With Pope Francis, they feel the things they dislike about the Catholic Church are despite him.

Allen’s new book contains a biographical sketch of Francis and his life, mostly with an eye towards how those experiences might color the Pope’s worldview and the priorities he has for the Church. Then Allen looks at key issues facing the Church such as much-needed financial reform, the role of women, the child molestation scandals and the lack of accountability for those who covered it up for decades. It’s a snapshot of the Francis papacy, where it’s at today, how he is doing and what to look for in the future.

I talked with Allen in-depth, discussing his unlikely career path, the many controversial issues facing the Catholic Church, the personality of Francis versus Benedict and why non-Catholics need to be aware of the Pope and his priorities just as they would with any other major world leader. You can see the entire interview at BookFilter.com. Following are some key excerpts.

ALLEN ON FIRST MEETING THE POPE

Allen talks about the first time he met the man who would become Pope Francis back in 2001 just days after 9-11. It was an almost accidental meeting because the late Cardinal Edward Egan had to back out of a previously arranged interview. (Egan died one day after our discussion took place.)

ALLEN ON WHY FRANCIS IS UNIQUE AMONG POPES WHEN IT COMES TO WOMEN

Allen talks about Pope Francis, how he broke new ground by working with and for women as a young man and why women are so far disappointed with his track record.

HOW ALLEN JUMPED FROM HIGH SCHOOL JOURNALISM TEACHER TO COVERING THE VATICAN

Allen talks about his unlikely career path that veered from religious studies to being the faculty adviser for a high school newspaper to hot rods and then — suddenly — the Vatican.

You can follow John L. Allen Jr. on Facebook and Twitter or at Crux and the Boston Globe. To see the full interview, head to BookFilter.com and watch the video embedded on the front page.
