Now Amazon Wants to Take Over Your Closet

Amazon has already changed the way humans shop for pretty much everything. Now the company has its sights set on the fastest growing segment of e-commerce on the planet: apparel.

Of course, there are plenty of hurdles. People have always been leery of buying clothes they can’t first see, feel, and/or try on. And guys notoriously hate shopping for clothes. Most importantly, until recently absolutely nothing about Amazon was considered “cool.” Rather, Amazon earned its renown as the source for the life’s necessary staples: trash bags, light bulbs, and batteries.

Alexa changed all that.

The groundbreaking smart home accessory beat established tech companies to market with a  fun, intuitive, and—so far—reliable product with the Echo. Thanks to its success, Amazon has been emboldened in recent years, branching into segments (like groceries) that had traditionally been off-limits to the company. It still might not be “cool,” but it’s definitely on the cutting edge.

Fashion, though, is purely subjective. Thanks to the commerce models put in place by apparel companies like Bonobos and Warby Parker, the online fashion commerce business plan has been firmly established. Now it’s up to Amazon to convince us that it’s developed a tasteful sense of style.

Amazon

Enter Amazon Fashion.

It follows Amazon’s traditional presentation to a T, sorting its offerings into categories by price, size, Big & Tall, brand, and more. But Amazon Fashion breaks it down even further into curated sections such as Night Out (stylish streetwear), Workout, and In for the Night (loungewear, pajamas). Better, it curates pages to offer recommendations on various styles of dress. The Cool section features plenty of black garb, skinny jeans, leather jackets, and boots; Minimal offers staples in warm tones, like coats, sweaters, and sneakers; Casual goes for the comfortable, laid-back look with chinos, chukkas, and natural fabrics; and Classic offers traditional everyday fare like jeans, t-shirts, work boots, and pea coats.

Recently, Amazon also unveiled a number of technical innovations designed to drive its apparel business. The Echo Look is an Alexa-powered “hands-free camera and style assistant” that records and comments on your clothing choices—and offers recommendations for improvement, based on a variety of AI factors. (If that seems kinda creepy, we don’t blame you—but so did horseless carriages way back when.) The Look hasn’t yet exploded like the Alexa has, perhaps because it doesn’t allow calling and messaging the way a traditional Echo does. But with a holiday sale price of $ 50 (it’s regularly $ 200), the Echo Look is priced to move. We’ll see.

Amazon
Amazon

Another new fashion feature, Prime Wardrobe, lets you to try up to eight items for seven days (no dressing rooms!) and return what you don’t want, free, in a resealable box with a preprinted label. It’s another modern approach that Amazon learned from the real innovators in the e-commerce apparel space, like StitchFix.

So take a spin around Amazon Fashion. If you’re already a Prime member, you’ve got nothing to lose; just return the stuff you won’t wear. It might not totally revolutionize your closet, but it’s way easier than a dozen laps around the mall. And hey, no dressing rooms.

Stonewalls, an LGBTQI Civil Rights Anthem, Comes Out of the Closet

2015-06-25-1435270487-6984530-StonewallsCoverForHuffPo.jpg

Sometimes things just come together in a rather uncanny way. In 1998 I performed Stonewalls, my original LGBTQI Civil Rights Anthem, for the first time as part of a concert I gave in Hollywood. At some point I wanted to record the song in a professional studio (which hasn’t happened yet). Well, this week i finally acquired the appropriate equipment to transfer videos to digital files, which allowed me to then bring the song out of the closet and onto YouTube and most worldwide music publishing platforms, all on the eve of the historic Marriage Equality rulings, and the weekend of the 40th anniversary of the Stonewall riots. Here you go!

I feel a great sense of relief because I now know this song will live on long after I am gone. Should something have happened to me I doubt anyone would have found the tape and done something with it. Thanks for sharing the song with me.

Teen’s Hilarious Senior Quote Puts New Spin On Coming Out Of The Closet

Maxwell Barrett wanted to leave high school “with a bang.” He succeeded.

The 18-year-old senior at Raritan High School in Hazlet, New Jersey, tweeted a screenshot of his yearbook photo and accompanying quote on Tuesday:

The quote, credited to “Unknown,” reads: “Of course I dress well, I didn’t spend all that time in the closet for nothing.”

“I wanted to go out with a bang,” Barrett, who is indeed very snappily dressed in the photo, told The Huffington Post. “I had never done sports, or clubs. I was always just an art student. I wanted to go out in a way people would remember me by!” He added that he didn’t come up with the quote completely on his own, but had rephrased a similar quote he’d seen online.

Barrett said he was “out” as gay to most people around him. Though he had never officially told his parents, he said he could tell that they already knew. “It was just more of a confirmation to [my parents] than a coming-out story,” he said.

And his parents’ reaction?

“They said it was the best one in the yearbook and that they were proud of me,” Barrett said. He mentioned that his classmates also loved it, and that even teachers had pulled him aside to congratulate him and comment on the quote.

Barrett said a yearbook supervisor initially told him they weren’t going to run the quote because of its “shock value.”

However, Hazlet Township Public School Superintendent Bernard Bragen could not confirm that happened.

“My understanding is that it was never pulled,” he said.

Out Of The Closet: A Fashion It Girl Shares Her Secret

2015-04-29-1430335102-4311982-IMG_4477.JPG

By Shelby Bilbruck

This is the hardest article I’ve ever had to write because it means putting my biggest secret on display for everyone to see and use to judge me. It’s a secret I’ve guarded for years, a secret I’ve cried over, a secret I shouldn’t be scared to share, but I am. So what is my secret? I’m gay. You’d think in this day and age, it should be easier to say who you love, but it isn’t.

I’m not gay because I was hurt by a man or because I haven’t met the right one and no, it’s not a phase. It’s who am I and who I’ve always been. I remember thinking girls were cute when I was young, but I still giggled about boys with my friends because I didn’t understand what I was feeling. Then throughout middle school I noticed all the girls were getting boyfriends, but it was the combination of buck teeth and uncertainty that kept me from getting one. In high school I finally started dating. My boyfriends and I would date for months, but I’d feel it was an empty relationship. By this time, it finally hit me that I may be gay. I thought of women the way all my friends thought of men, but I continued to brush the feelings off. I didn’t want to be gay. Being straight seemed easier and normal, but rebelling against your truth is toxic.

2015-04-28-1430243409-88673-11084920_1455378974752688_1969681856_n.jpg

When I got to college I continued to meet guys, get their numbers and go on dates. Looking back at it though, I was only testing myself to see if I was attracted to them in any way. I always wanted the answer to be yes, but it never was.

Everywhere I looked, society was telling me I was supposed to end up with a man but by the end of my freshmen year in college, I knew I wasn’t going to. I finally found the courage to accept that I was gay, but I was worried about the world accepting it too. I kept up a straight façade for years and I felt every aspect of my health decaying from it. The body under the mask I wore slowly faded in spirit and faith and I wondered if I’d ever be happy and free or if I’d be stuck where I was the rest of my life.

The past year was the hardest for me. I knew I was ready to come out, but I didn’t know how. I fell into a depression from lying to everyone, but mostly for lying to myself. I always claimed to be an open book, but I wasn’t. I was closed, hidden away and locked up. That is, until I finally had to speak up about my feelings.

2015-04-28-1430243436-8262418-929173_1483901968515242_1267107819_n.jpg

The first person I ever came out to was my sister Sidney. We were at an amusement park on Halloween and I looked at her and asked what she thought would happen if I brought home a girl. She pondered it for a second then laughed and said she didn’t know. That’s when I told her we would find out because the next person I’d be bringing home would be a girl.

It took her a moment to figure out I was telling the truth and when she realized I was coming out to her she gave me a high five and told me she was excited for me. She was interested and asked me questions, let me vent about everything I had been holding back for years and, suddenly, I felt a little less alone. She helped me in ways she’ll never understand just by being there for me on that night and every night since.

I’d been living in fear for so long, I nearly forgot what hope was, but my sister’s acceptance of me gave me a taste once more. I used that hope to come out to some of my close friends and a couple of my cousins. They all accepted me because they knew I was the same girl, friend and confidant I had always been. I realized I had to stop being scared of what could go wrong when I came out and start focusing on what could go right.

2015-04-28-1430243470-963058-928742_433235693497655_899680175_n.jpg

Even with my friends knowing my secret though, I still felt alone. I continued to hide the truth from others around me, including two people I love more than anything, my parents. I felt distant from them because every time I was around them I reverted back to my old self. I was reliving the lie I’d finally shed and I hated it. I didn’t try to avoid my parents, but it just ended up happening.

I couldn’t sleep one night. It was nearly 3 a.m. and I was laying in bed crying, something I had begun to do more and more. I couldn’t stand lying to my parents and everyone else any longer. I made the decision to come out to my mom and dad that night because once they knew, I felt the world could know too.

I was a wreck all day. I had a good feeling my parents would love me for who I am. But what would happen if they didn’t?

2015-04-28-1430243524-5755062-11007965_840586812654960_1607950812_n1.jpg

That morning, my body was in class, but my mind was a million miles away. I wrote a letter, planning every word and pouring my heart into it because that night I was going to read it to my parents.

I had my friend Andrea come to my house before I left for my parent’s. I cried as I read my letter to her and had a panic attack…laying on the floor shaking in fear.

When I got home, my parents looked so concerned when I walked them to the table with tears swelling in my eyes. I said I had to tell them something and to not interrupt me as I read. When I started, I didn’t know if I’d be able to finish. My hands were shaking so much I could hardly read the letter, let alone see it through my tears.

2015-04-28-1430243565-2095243-inst5.jpg

My dad kept handing me tissues as I choked out my words, tears staining the pages I worked so hard to write. The last few words tumbled out of my mouth as my parents came to my side of the table and started hugging me. They said they still loved me and always would. I kept crying, but, for the first time in months, they were tears of joy.

Coming out is scary and difficult, but it’s freeing. I thought I felt beautiful when I dressed up in fancy clothes, but I’d never felt more beautiful than when I was finally myself. I understand that not everyone will be able to accept me and I was lucky that all of the most important people in my life did. Even if they hadn’t though, telling them now would have given them plenty of time to realize that I’m still me, I’m still Shelby. There’s a part of me that is always going to wish I came out sooner, but the rest of me is happy I came out exactly when I did.

For so long society had been writing my story and I hated how it was going to end, but now, I hold the pen. I’ve started writing a new chapter and the first sentence in it is, “I’m gay and not scared to admit it, because now I fully love myself for it.”

Note From Mary Alice Stephenson

I met Shelby Bilbruck when she volunteered to help with a fashion empowerment event held by my organization GLAM4GOOD. She was such a hardworking and dynamic young woman that I asked her to intern for GLAM4GOOD last summer.

Shelby and I talked about sharing her story here with you but I wanted her to talk to her family and make sure that this was a declaration she wanted to make to the world.

After a few weeks of thinking about it, Shelby got back to me and wanted to move forward with this post. I am so proud of Shelby. The story you just read is inspiring and beautiful and one that will resonate with many young people. It is an honor to support Shelby and we both hope that by posting this story we might be able to empower other young people feel comfortable and find the courage to open up and talk to their families about whatever it is they might be hiding.

The Ultimate Flowchart for Cleaning Out Your Closet (No Excuses)

flowchart-holding

When was the last time you were able to close your closet door? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Nor should you be: The task of cleaning out your closet solo is near impossible. When you look into your wardrobe, you see all the memories that give life to your clothes; you’re aware of the money you spent on them, and each time you consider extracting a piece, a chorus of “what ifs” sings in your head: What if miniskirts come back? What if I take a trip to Morocco? What if Jake Gyllenhaal asks me out on a date? What if Kristen Stewart invites me to play catch on the beach? It isn’t easy to limit your options, or find an advisor you trust who has the patience to take on the task with you.

And so, unless you’re Kim Kardashian West with a closet-cleanse-giddy husband (this week she tweeted that the two were up all night redoing her wardrobe for a “New 2015 vision”), you need this flowchart. It addresses all the excuses you can make for yourself while attempting to edit your wardrobe. All you have to do in return is commit, and try your best to be honest.

I developed this line of questioning two years ago while playing the role of closet-cleaning guru for my good friend Audrey Gelman. As she held up each piece, I asked her: Do you need it? Does it fit? What is its sentimental value? Do you look like future you or past you in this? The deal was: We sorted through, and at the end, she got veto power on three pieces and could take them from the donate pile and put them back in her closet. Plus, we simultaneously made a list of new things to look forward to buying that would streamline and define her look. We’re still friends, so it couldn’t have been that painful. Try it out for yourself, or bring it along when a friend asks you to be a wardrobe-trimming voice of reason—just remember what Kanye told Kim when they cleaned out her closet on Keeping Up With the Kardashians in 2012: “Sometimes silence is the best response.” Now toss it on the pile.
