Tiffany Haddish continues her winning streak after her breakout Girls Trip role. Now, the hilarious comedienne and actress will get her own hour-long stand-up special on Netflix.

Deadline reports:

She is just the latest big-name comic to get a Netflix special as the streamer continues to roll out performances by the likes of Dave Chappelle, Jerry Seinfeld, Ellen DeGeneres, Chris Rock and Kevin James along with the special Def Comedy Jam 25.

“Tiffany Haddish is a force,” said Lisa Nishimura, VP Original Documentary and Comedy at Netflix. “Hilariously funny, brash and self-effacing, she’s an incredible artist who is winning over audiences while breaking barriers, and we are tremendously proud that she will showcase her formidable talent on Netflix.”

The streaming service locked up Haddish’s voice talents in February, announcing that she will star in the toon series Tuca & Bertie. Ali Wong, whose own Netflix stand-up special bowed in May, co-stars in the series.

Haddish is currently co-starring with Tracy Morgan for TBS’ The Last O.G. and is set to appear with longtime friend Kevin Hart in Night School.

Get that coin, Tiffany Haddish.

Hannah Gadsby and Jerry Seinfeld bring very different comedy philosophies to Netflix

Netflix has followed in HBO’s footsteps by investing heavily in stand-up comedy. And as a sign of what a big tent that discipline represents, one would be hard-pressed to find a more striking philosophical split than Jerry Seinfeld — who’s back with his breezy series “Comedian in Cars Getting Coffee” — and Hannah Gadsby, whose scathing one-woman show questions the very nature of the stand-up craft.

The very rare first edition with illustrations to paradise. It is the first edition with the commentary of cristoforo landino revised by pietro da fighine. The COMMEDIA is followed by Credo, Dieci Comandamenti, Sette Salmi, Pater Noster and Ave Maria. The greatest yet attempted in poetry, was to explain and justify the Christian cosmos through the allegory of a pilgrimage. To him comes Virgil, the symbol of philosophy, to guide him through the two lower realms of the next world, which are divided according to the classifications of the ‘Ethics’ of Aristotle. Hell is seen as an inverted cone with its point where lies Lucifer fixed in ice at the centre of the world, and the pilgrimage from it is a climb to the foot of and then up the Purgatorial Mountain. Along the way Dante passes Popes, Kings and Emperors, poets, warriors and citizens of Florence, expiating the sins of their life on earth. On the summit is the Earthly Paradise where Beatrice meets them and Virgil departs. Dante is now led through the various spheres of heaven, and the poem ends with a vision of the Deity. The audacity of his theme, the success of its treatment, the beauty and majesty of his verse, have ensured that his poem never lost its reputation. The picture of divine justice is entirely unclouded by Dante’s own political prejudices, and his language never falls short of what he describes".

SNL in Review: How Will Ferrell Saved ‘Saturday Night Live’ 20 Years Ago and Transformed Comedy

In SNL IN REVIEW, we look back at some of the notable cinematic efforts from Saturday Night Live alum, and place them in context of the actor-comedian’s career.

Throughout its history, Saturday Night Live has experienced ebbs and flows, departing cast members signaling the end of one era, new additions launching another. (Arguably, we are in one of those periods now.) Most famously, the Not Ready for Primetime Players exited SNL at the beginning of the 80s, giving way to Eddie Murphy “saving” the show singlehandedly until Lorne Michaels’ return in 1985.

The definitive shift, however, took place 20 years ago.

SNL can really be split into two halves: boomer humor, and post-boomer humor. The first period (1975-1995) was a coup of sorts – a sign that anti-establishment voices, besieged by Vietnam and Watergate, had arrived. Their sensibility eventually became entrenched in the mainstream, typified by the Hollywood success stories of John Belushi in The Blues Brothers and Bill Murray in Caddyshack. However, as the first wave splintered, a different, post-boomer comic perspective began to emerge. The first appearance of a young Will Ferrell at the 21st SNL season premiere on September 30, 1995 doesn’t simply portend this development; it’s the line in the sand, the threshold, a link to today’s universe of comic viral content. Ferrell himself described what was at stake to Marc Maron as “this will either work, or the show will get cancelled.”

The release of his recent HBO special, Ferrell Takes the Field, and this summer’s Lifetime movie A Deadly Adoption demonstrates that Ferrell continues to enjoy long-lasting celebrity. But commemorating his casting on SNL is more than his iconic film characters over the years: Ron Burgundy, Brennan Huff, Buddy the Elf, Ricky Bobby, Mugatu, Steve Butabi. It’s also about the shift in American humor from the ironic smarm employed by SNL‘s first stars to something more surreal and, regrettably, clickworthy.

In fact, a review of Ferrell’s sketch work on the show reveals a foundation for what’s been an often influential and successful film career. As a result, Ferrell is among the last true comedy superstar to be bred on Saturday Night Live.

A decade into Lorne Michael’s second reign as showrunner, SNL was once again facing an identity crisis. Besieged by scathing reviews and low ratings, Michaels opted to once again retool. His timing was critical — many of the show’s stars (Dana Carvey, Mike Myers) had left for Hollywood, while others were dragging the show to increasingly juvenile, and possibly misogynistic, places. This conglomerate, the “Bad Boys of SNL,” consisted of Adam Sandler and Chris Farley, both of whom would be fired after the disastrous ’94-’95 season. In more ways than one, the show was hitting a wall creatively.

With good reason. Remarkably, the show up until this point had mostly targeted, under its various incarnations, baby boomers. (Any lip service paid to Gen X was incidental, and not reflective of their perspective.) Musical guests and hosts during the 20th season resembled names that could’ve contributed during the show’s initial run (and did): Bob Newhart, Eric Clapton, Paul Simon, Steve Martin, Rod Stewart. The original cast was hitting middle age – Dan Aykroyd was only 43 by 1995 -and it was not uncommon to still see Not Ready for Primetime Players still headlining films in multiplexes. (In 1995, the waning Chevy Chase starred in Man of the House, while Aykroyd inaugurated the “Home for SNL-Bred Ex-Box Office Champs” with appearances in Tommy Boy and Canadian Bacon.)

In order to stave off cancellation, SNL needed to turn the page. As host Mariel Hemingway states in her monologue, the show was filled with changes: “new director, new writers, new set.” While many, including Chris Rock, have described Eddie Murphy’s legendary contributions, less noted are the ways Ferrell’s character work changed the course of the show.

It was an inauspicious beginning during the season premiere. Riffing on her then-controversial kiss with Roseanne, Hemingway introduces Ferrell (briefly) before fawning and kissing over the new female cast members. He’s there, then gone.

Later, his knack for appearing well-intentioned and normal pays off. Mariel Hemingway’s wife wants to get off the phone and enlists Ferrell, as her husband, to come up with increasingly outlandish reasons for her to hang up. This brief sketch captures the absurdity of the mundane that would soon become his hallmark. Later film roles, from Old School to Kicking & Screaming, are based on the simple notion that Ferrell looks like the average dad who accidentally loses his shit. He’s a live action Randy Marsh.

Ferrell’s audition reveals similar thematic terrain; as Tina Fey has said, he always had an eye for subverting All American males and heartland values. He launches into Ted Kennedy-as-a-standup, a bad Bill Clinton impression, before beginning his classic “Get Off the Shed!” routine (which he also does in his first show), and acting out his corporate executive playing with yarn. That seeming docility, and its lurking rage, made Ferrell a prime pop cultural figure at the beginning of the new millennium – a representation of suburban residents and their discontent. This thread begins at SNL, before its eventual transition to “We’re Going Streaking!” (Worth noting: his first feature length writing credit, A Night at the Roxbury, tweaks the inherent silliness of youthful machismo and hook up culture.)

Viewing Ferrell as a comedy auteur makes his sketch work significant within the broader scope of his now legendary film career. In fact, since joining SNL, Ferrell has always resembled something of an outlier. By the early 90s, many of SNL‘s stars still fell within a second cohort for baby boomers – Farley and Spade were born in 1964. Phil Hartman was born in 1948. Ferrell, for his part, was born in 1967, but his peak popularity would fall just as a generation of young people were signing up for Facebook. Sure, he cut teeth doing standup in Orange County during the early 90s, before linking up with the Groundlings. (Which soon became the training ground for sitcom and SNL performers, displacing Second City, which had been the dominant clearinghouse for cast members in the 70s and 80s.) However, a combination of timing and the uniqueness of his characters would allow Ferrell to transcend his peers.

Characters played by Ferrell on SNL were often innocents (Spartan Cheerleaders), or oddballs (James Lipton, Goulet). Collectively, they lent the template for his later onscreen portrayals. Marty Culp proved his musical chops, giving way to his unhinged song & dance as Franz Liebkind in The Producers, as well as his pivotal, earth shattering performance at the end of Step Brothers. Craig Buchanan might’ve graduated high school, one day moved to North Pole and become Buddy the Elf. The basic lovable American idiot first shown in his George Bush would soon give way, in one variation or another, to Ron Burgundy and Ricky Bobby. Never fully disappearing behind makeup (a la Mike Myers), or a natural mimic (like Carvey), Ferrell’s success in Hollywood has been forged on the subtle range of types he perfected as an SNL cast member.

His best film work utilized him as a friendlier, commercialized, updated version of Andy Kaufman. (Besides Bewitched or Land of the Lost, none of his film projects approach the disaster of Heartbeeps, thankfully.) Moreover, his frequent, now trademark use of non-sequiturs was first witnessed in sketch work, such as the ones focused on the unseen Bill Brasky. Becoming his calling card, that brand of humor has been central to his ongoing success as a film star, whose movies have grossed nearly $ 2.4 billion domestically, adjusted for inflation. Moreover, Ferrell’s legacy may include the way his trademark humor’s role in today’s increasingly online hub for comedy and viral content (and, in the case of Brasky, serving as the obvious inspiration for Dos Equis’ Most Interesting Man in the World campaign).

The reverberations of Ferrell’s SNL work goes beyond his own films. The immortal “More Cowbell” skit was done only once, and is frequently cited as one of the greatest sketches in the show’s history. (Character Gene Frenkle has since reappeared when Ferrell has hosted alongside the SNL musical guest.) Perhaps only Peanut Butter Jelly Time! has been as widely circulated with comedy’s transition into the millennial-centered world of memes and share-able links. And “More Cowbell” (then Pearl and Anchorman) were at the front lines. Andy Samberg is often credited with shepherding SNL into the digital age, but Ferrell’s output, and the catchphrases he invented, certainly pointed in the direction of the wind.

Today, Ferrell is still ubiquitous, particularly with the success of Funny or Die. It’s odd to recall that his early film work was amidst the tail end of Lorne Michaels’ bid to translate every popular sketch to film: A Night at the Roxbury, Ladies Man, Superstar, and the fatefully aborted Sprockets movie. Ferrell was a fixture in the original Austin Powers and worked with Jim Carrey, yet has never felt like a dated relic of the 90s.

Indeed, it’s hard to imagine comedy today without More Cowbell, strategery or much of what makes Talladega Nights and the original Anchorman so memorable. Along with Family Guy, Ferrell succeeded in pioneering a new path for mainstream comedy that’s been copped and practically beaten to death. Twenty years since his SNL debut, his everyman fury, gift for improvisation and random, digital friendly quotables (“By the beard of Zeus!”) is now common in pop culture (if not a tad trite). There’s a reason, at age 44, he was selected as the 2011 recipient of the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

Few comics have sustained as diverse and lengthy a comic resume as Ferrell. Alongside Kristen Wiig, Ferrell altered the kinds of characters shown on SNL. Whether they were secret weirdos, or typical American dolts, Ferrell tapped into a humanity which still resonates with audiences. In doing so, he liberated SNL from its own legacy, allowing the show to avoid cancellation and grow into a third golden age.

Ann Taylor Loft Teams With Busy Philipps on Comedy Shorts

LOFT GETS BUSY: Continuing with its series of artistic collaborations — such as with graffiti artist and designer Chris Uphues last Valentine’s Day and with comedian Whitney Cummings, who curated and hosted a series of outdoor film screenings known as the “LOL Movie Series” over the summer — Ann Taylor Loft has tapped actress Busy Philipps for fall. The pair teamed up on two comedy shorts, both directed by Philipps and centering around fall themes.
Though Philipps previously directed an episode of TBS’s “Cougar Town,” the collaboration with Loft is her directorial debut on an independent project. “When they first approached me, I have to admit, my thought was ‘That’s weird, because I don’t work in an office,’” Philipps told WWD. “But my daughter and I went into the Loft store in Charleston [S.C.] where I am currently shooting, and I found myself really surprised by how cute and wearable the clothes were and how many pieces I found that fit into my daily life as a working mom.”
In the first short, titled “First Day of School” and costarring her daughter Birdie, Philipps thought it would be humorous to flip the script on first-day-of-school rituals. “I thought it’d be funny… to

“Veep” nabbed Outstanding Comedy Series at Sunday’s Emmys, breaking the five-time “Modern Family” winning streak. The celebrated HBO series won for its fourth season. Had “Modern Family” prevailed, it would have topped the record it shares with “Frasier” as the category’s most-honored show.

“Veep” also bested “Louie,” “Parks and Recreation,” “Silicon Valley,” “Transparent” and “Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.” The political comedy won several other awards throughout the night, including repeat victories for Julia Louis-Dreyfus (Lead Actress in a Comedy Series) and Tony Hale (Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series). Simon Blackwell, Armando Iannucci and Tony Roche also won Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series for the episode “Election Night.”

The Moral Arc of ‘Ted 2’: A Ribald Comedy With a Moral Message

2015-06-26-1435353852-5412889-SMacFarlane_01.jpg

What does a smart and socially savvy comedy writer, actor, and producer like Seth MacFarlane (Family Guy, SNL host, Oscars host) do when he wants to say something relevant about the moral progress of humanity and deliver it to a large audience? Write it into the sequel of his wildly popular 2012 hit comedy film Ted, the story of a talking teddy bear (voiced by MacFarlane) and his lifelong buddy, John (played by Mark Wahlberg).

2015-06-26-1435353816-33804-ted2dance.jpg

Unlike most sequels, Ted 2 surpasses the original on every level, starting with a glittery opening sequence of a tuxedoed Ted dancing to “Steppin’ Out With My Baby” alongside dozens of glittery dancers like a scene from a 1950s Hollywood extravaganza (a nod to MacFarlane’s love of big band music, evident at the film’s after-screening party that featured a 20-piece orchestra). Mark Wahlberg’s John is now divorced and holed up in a bachelor’s apartment not yet ready to date again, while Ted is married to Tami-Lynn (Jessica Barth), his friend (with benefits) at the supermarket from the first installment. To save their failing marriage the couple decide to have a baby, but of course Ted’s DNA is of the wrong species, so the two hatch the insane (and insanely funny) idea of stealing NFL quarterback Tom Brady’s jizz by sneaking into his bedroom at night for some handy hanky panky.

2015-06-26-1435354093-3306216-25421CA8000005782935856imagem10_1422846462980.jpg

When that fails, Wahlberg volunteers his, and the two end up at a sperm bank where such donations are made in a little room (with or without porn?). This too doesn’t work out, in part because of the antics the two engage in during a scene in the sperm storage room, so the erstwhile couple decide to adopt.

2015-06-26-1435354193-5538274-Ted2InCourtRoomImages.jpg

The morality play unfolds when the Commonwealth of Massachusetts determines that a teddy bear — even a foul-mouthed talking one — is property, not a person, and property cannot adopt a child, much less be married, so the rest of the film follows the legal battle to grant Ted personhood status, and herein the audience gets a friendly (and funny) dose of moral history and philosophy, since at one point in our country’s past members of our own species were considered to be property and not persons. (No, blacks were never considered to be “three-fifths” of a person — the Three-Fifths Compromise made during the 1787 Constitutional Convention was over how slaves should be counted in the determination of a state’s total population, which in turn was used to determine legislative representation in Congress. Slaves never had three-fifths rights as persons.) Morgan Freeman’s civil rights attorney reluctantly takes the case after much moral persuasion by Amanda Seyfried’s young lawyer Samantha, with references to Dred Scott, the slave who unsuccessfully sued for his freedom in 1857 after moving to a slave-free state and marrying a free black woman. The legal journey turns into a road trip that includes a remake of the hilarious scene out of the 1987 film Planes, Trains, and Automobiles, where Ted riffs off Ray Charles’ “Mess Around” while driving recklessly down the highway, pace John Candy’s brilliantly funny routine from that classic comedy that holds up still after almost 30 years (my wife had not seen that film, so I Netflixed it and we laughed til our sides hurt watching it after the Ted 2 screening).

2015-06-26-1435354397-5492140-PlanesTrainsCandyMess_l.jpg

If a sentient being who can talk and think and love (and tell dirty jokes) is not considered a person, then — Samantha asks in a dramatic courtroom scene — “Who gets subjugated after the bear?”

2015-06-26-1435353894-5003683-maxresdefault.jpg

It’s a good question, and as it turns out (quite by chance), it comes on the day that the Supreme Court announced their epic decision to make same-sex marriage the law of the land. By all accounts, Ted appears to be a straight bear, but if he did want to marry Steve instead of Eve (as in the sophomoric refrain “It’s Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve”), it would now be legal. Perhaps this could be a subplot of Ted 3, but until then enjoy this immensely funny and (at the same time) thoughtful paean to progress. At this time of racial tensions in the land it is good to put specific incidents (e.g., Ferguson) into context and remember how far we’ve come from the bad old days not that long ago when two members of our species who were in love were not allowed to marry if they had different skin color. That’s moral progress, as I documented it in The Moral Arc, and it’s a pleasant surprise to find a similar message in a light-hearted comedy. Cultural transformations on such issues as personhood and same-sex marriage come about from all of us working from the bottom up and the top down to expand the moral sphere to include more people — and even animals — in our consideration of who (or what) is worthy of dignity and respect.

Comedy Legend Carl Reiner On The New Guard Of Late Night: James Corden Is ‘Unbelievable’

Comedy legend Carl Reiner knows a thing or two about late night: he’s the only man on the planet to have appeared on every incarnation of the “Tonight Show,” from Steve Allen to Jimmy Fallon.

And with all the changes going on in late night TV, Reiner is very optimistic. While he calls Fallon an “amazing talent,” Reiner especially likes the newest name in late night, James Corden, host of the “Late Late Show” on CBS.

“He’s unbelievable,” said Reiner. “He sings, he dances… he is very graceful and he sings beautifully.”

Jim Breuer: Sports & Comedy Intersect for Stand-Up Guy

Everyone knows that even the most talented athlete has put in long hours of practice and developed a mental toughness second to none. To prepare for competition, athletes spend exorbitant amounts of time on the practice field or in the weight room, just as their coaches do in the film room, looking for clues on how to perfect their offense or counter a defensive scheme. No matter how much talent a professional coach has on his roster or a player has in his God-given gene pool, there’s nothing that compares to preparation through practice, even if the ticket-buying public thinks they can just roll out the balls and play.

Now picture the life of a stand-up comic.

“Some people think what I do is … ‘Oh, yeah, just show up and be funny,'” said comedian Jim Breuer, one of Comedy Central’s 100 Greatest Stand-Ups of All-Time, as he approached the May 29th debut of his “Comic Frenzy” one-hour special on EPIX (check local listings). “Comedy is on my mind 24/7,” he noted when asked of the comparisons between a stand-up comic and a pro ballplayer. “I’m always thinking, always creating and always developing in my head, and I need to a couple months ahead.

“I have this new special coming out now (on EPIX), but I’m plotting and planning for the future and trying to be ahead of the game,” continued Breuer, a Long Island native and ardent New York Mets fan. “You’re a writer, and you have to come up with new material to keep your audience. You want your new stuff to be even funnier. Otherwise, you’re dead. You’re dead in the water.

“It’s just like sports, really. Great, you hit the game-winning home run yesterday but today, you if blew the game with an error on what could’ve been an easy, game-ending double-play? Or, forget it if you’re a pitcher and you just got shelled in today’s game.”

So what’s is like to get shelled as a comedian?

“Thank God, at the stage I’m at now, (I know) I’ll rebound from this. And if I ever get that shelling, it might be from a private, bizarre gig that I probably shouldn’t be doing in the first place, like a small private party with eight people attending in somebody’s living room.”

Popular comedian Jim Breuer doesn’t have to worry about that scary scenario any more. After some 20 years in the business, he can command a stand-up comedy stage much like his favorite New York Mets pitcher, Dwight Gooden, commanded the mound in 1986.

“Dwight Gooden was one of the best pitchers I’ve ever seen in my life,” recalled Breuer, who attended many games at Shea Stadium from 1984 to the Mets’ world championship season of 1986. That’s when Gooden was enjoying a span of about 50 starts when he went 37-5 with a 1.38 ERA and 412 strikeouts in 406 innings pitched.

“It was an EVENT! He’d show up, he sold out, and people came out just to watch him pitch. He was invincible, mowing people down. It was like watching a Mike Tyson fight (in his early days).”

While it’s fun to watch a game on TV, there’s nothing like attending the event in person. Breuer feels that live comedy supplies that same experience.

“What describes me best (and what portrays him at his best), is when you come see me live. Stand-up comedy is the best “a-game” that I put out there,” said Breuer, after being prompted for insight. “And the reason I feel this show is so good is that I did it 100 percent my way. I filmed it where I wanted to film it – on Long Island, in front of some of my hometown people. I hired the director I wanted to direct, and this is my personal project. I’m very excited about it.

“If someone wonders what I’m like, live, this (EPIX special) is a really great description.”

It’s a rare comedic star who becomes an overnight sensation. The more typical path to stardom is similar to the long road an athlete must travel, where hard work, perseverance and dedication to the craft are what make a star a star.

“It comes with experience and it comes with confidence, especially confidence,” Breuer paused to emphasize. “It comes with a drive and determination.

“I went out there in 2008, and here we are, seven years later, and it’s my third or fourth special. But technically I started my career in 1989, so I’ve been around a while, working TV. When you finally find your voice and how you want to use it? It took me quite a while to find that. I was always a huge comedy fan, and I watched it since I was little,” he said, remembering watching Johnny Carson as a youngster, as well as the likes of Laurel and Hardy or Abbott and Costello on Sunday mornings.

“I loved it all. George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Buddy Hackett and Don Rickles. I can remember Laugh In and Sonny & Cher. But Eddie Murphy? I went to see him at the Westbury Music Fair when I was about 17 or 18 years old and to see someone that young (Murphy was only 23 at the time), I could just taste it. He was the super-inspiration for me.”

The thrill of making people laugh the way Eddie Murphy could was the attraction to Breuer and drew him to a profession that, like professional sports, provides valuable entertainment value to the average fan.

“Music – Comedy – Sports, they all have healing power,” said Breuer. “They can heal a major part of you. They can be healers of pain or healers of (bad) memories. But they can create great memories…I think that’s why everyone relates to them.

“Sports, music and comedy, everyone needs them.”

Kevin Hart Is Encouraging Fans To Live Heathier Lifestyles Through His New Comedy Tour

Comedian Kevin Hart is leveraging his massive platform to raise health awareness through his currently ongoing “What Now” comedy tour.

As part of his new initiative, Hart has partnered with leading consumer health engagement developer Rally Health to sponsor his 45-city tour. During each tour stop, Hart will provide fans with interactive tools and encourage them to be more proactive in taking steps to living a healthier, stress free lifestyle.

While the 35-year-old Philadelphia native has attributed laughter as being “the best medicine,” he has also credited fitness as an essential component to his success and wants to encourage more fans to add it to their daily list of activities, too.

“It puts the first foot forward in being productive. It’s just about getting in the door. That’s where people lose the battle,” Hart told The Huffington Post. “If one day you don’t feel like it and don’t go, what’s to stop you from not going the next day?”

“There has to be a driving force that gets you to the point regardless of how you feel. Rally Health is not only doing that but challenging me to meet new personal goals. The more people can understand about their lifestyle, the more they can get up to move, exercise and get better results.”

Hart’s passion for fitness, laughter, and his ability to inspire people to adopt healthier habits were a few of the contributing factors for his selection as Rally Health’s first brand ambassador, says the company’s founder and CEO Grant Verstandig.

The comedian-actor underscored Verstandig’s comments by admitting the parallels between the company’s vision and his lifestyle. “My lifestyle and what I do in my day is what aligns with Rally Health,” Hart said.

“We don’t want to see people dropping like flies. It’s about getting people into the right mindset to be better by moving more, eating better and reducing your stress.”

NBC’s Fall Schedule Lacks Comedy, But Has A Neil Patrick Harris Variety Show

Brace yourself for a whole lot of drama on NBC this fall.

The network announced its fall 2015-2016 lineup Sunday. The new slate includes variety show “Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris,” “Heroes” revival “Heroes Reborn,” crime thriller “Blindspot,” Wesley Snipes’ thriller “The Player,” couples comedy “People Are Talking” and medical drama “Heartbreaker.”

The most surprising feature of the schedule is its drastic lack of comedies. Besides “Undateable,” which was renewed for a third season of all-live episodes, NBC’s only other half-hour comedy is newcomer “People Are Talking.” Both shows will air back-to-back on Friday night, meaning that NBC will have only one hour of comedy programming per week this fall. That’s the lowest number of comedies the network has had since the fall of 1978, according to Vulture, revealing that comedies clearly aren’t a priority for the peacock network.

NBC’s fall schedule is rounded out with renewed shows “The Blacklist,” “Grimm,” “Chicago P.D.,” “Chicago Fire,” “Law & Order: SVU,” “Mysteries of Laura,” “Undateable,” “Celebrity Apprentice” and “Hollywood Game Night.”

Check out trailers for four of NBC’s new shows below:

“People Are Talking”

“Blindspot”

“Heartbreaker”

“The Player”

HBO Orders an ’80s-Set Music-Video Comedy from David Fincher

HBO Orders an '80s-Set Music-Video Comedy from David FincherDid you know that at one point, music was just music? Like, you would listen to a song on something called a "radio" and you'd have to make up the singer's face in your mind because it was a purely aural medium. But then the 1980s came along and the music video came into the mainstream thanks to MTV and the awesome hair of Mark Goodman. And then all hell broke loose in the music industry! Why am I giving you a brief history lesson in music videos? Well, I wanted to paint a picture of what HBO's new series Video Synchronicity might look like. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the network has given a series order to the comedy, which is set in the 1980s and follows a video producer who moves to Los Angeles right at the beginning of the music-video boom. There's a big name behind the show, too. David Fincher ( Fight Club, House of Cards) will direct and produce the series. Starring as Robby, a green director who moves to Hollywood looking to direct a sci-fi movie but falls into making music videos, will be Charlie Rowe, who you last saw hairless as Leo on Fox's Red Band Society. Also on board to star are Sam Page, Jason Flemyng, Kerry Condon, Elizabeth Lail, Corbin Bernsen, and Paz Vega. This sounds pretty good, guys. And I'm loving how HBO is going hard into comedy territory. In addition to Video Synchronicity, HBO has the Rock's Ballers, Danny McBride's Vice Principals, Lorne Michael's Brothers in Atlanta, Sarah Jessica Parker's Divorce, former web series High Maintenance, and the World War 3 farce The Brink coming soon. Will you watch Video Synchronicity ? Will you at least think about it?

Helicopter Mom Official Trailer 1 (2015) – Nia Vardalos Comedy HD

Even with good intentions and an abundance of love, parents can sometimes become…smothering. Such is the case with Maggie (a hilarious Nia Vardalos), who decides that she would not only accept her son Lloyd (Jason Dolley) as gay, she would encourage it. In fact, Maggie becomes so convinced that Lloyd is indeed gay that she “outs” him to his entire high school. Like any good “helicopter mom” Maggie hovers over every aspect of her son’s life. She takes control of his social life, sets him up on dates with boys whom she has approved, and files for a gay student college scholarship. There’s just one wrench in her grand plans: Lloyd doesn’t even know whether he’s gay or not – and he’s just asked a cute girl to prom (Skyler Samuels). In the end, will Maggie be willing to accept her son for who he is-or just who she thinks he is?

Natasha Lyonne on How Women Are Taking Over Comedy

Natasha Lyonne, director Jamie Babbit, and writer Karey Dornetto sat down with the What’s Trending team at this year’s South by Southwest festival to talk about their new film, “Fresno.” The conversation covered both Fresno the movie and the city, as well as the state of women in comedy today.

The film is a dark comedy about two sisters who work as hotel maids in the California city. You don’t see a lot of films set in Fresno, and apparently the city has been touchy on the topic.

“A lot of people were like, ‘Don’t mess with Fresno!'” Lyonne told us.

“I grew up in a terrible town called Cleveland,” Babbit said. “I grew up in an underdog city so I really responded to living in an armpit and wanting to get out. So when we decided to make the movie in California rather than Clevend, I thought about, ‘what is the Cleveland of California?'”

But movie title aside, the film is more about complicated women and the relationship between them. It’s a roll that “most women don’t get to play” according to Dornetto.

Lyonne describes it as “not apologizing for being sort of not thrilled with being alive.”

“I think when I see funny movies about women I get really excited.” Babbit said. “‘Bridesmaids’ really blew me away.”

“I loved that it was a movie about female friendships, which is something you don’t really see.” Babbit said. “We wanted to tell a movie about sisters who want to kill each other.”

On the subject of women in comedy, Lyonne said, “I think it’s such a great time for women in comedy. Amy Poehler and Lena Duham… there’s just so many exciting things going on right now.”

“I don’t know how men got the upper hand way back when,” Lyonne said. “It’s going to end and die soon. Hopefully some of them will stick around so we can use them for what we need them for. Reproduction and such.”

A Film Producer and a Comedy Writer Walk Into a Bar…

My latest lifelong dream is to get paid for being hilarious, be it stand-up or a well-written film or television show. Around the time of this revelation, one of my “real writer friends” — who was actually making quite a name for himself in screenwriting (the real, paid kind of screenwriting) — mentioned an up and coming producer who was making a name for herself in film and suggested that she would be an excellent person to speak to in regards to learning everything about the process of getting my little ideas onto the big screen. He was also very impressed by how determined she was to carve her own path in this very competitive industry, and suggested I join forces with her when I am ready to transition into the development phase.

As fate would have it, this new connection wound up being Marlinda Walcott — an old friend of mine from high school whom I had no clue was now working professionally in film. I quickly found out that Marlinda was the real deal, holding legitimate producer roles in feature films such as the psychological thriller Victims, starting Katherine Isabell and Christian Campbell and indie hits Goon, starring Seann William Scott, Jay Baruchel, Eugene Levey and Liev Schriber and romantic comedy What If/The F-Word starring Daniel Radcliffe and Zoe Kazan. She has also worked on video game franchise hits such as Silent Hill: Resolution and Resident Evil: Retribution, both films having combined, worldwide gross of over $ 300 million. She was, in fact, the real deal.

2015-02-23-unnamed1.jpg

I am certain that there are a few comedy writers out there who would love to see their name in the credits, but have no idea how to get there. In the spirit of sharing, here are a few highlights from my many conversations with producer Marlinda Walcott in hopes of helping my fellow aspiring screenwriters and producers.

Me: Over the past decade, you’ve held a producing role in hundreds of millions of dollars’ worth of film and television projects. At what point in your life did you decide that this was what you wanted to do for the rest of your life?

MW: Growing up, I always had a natural curiosity for how things worked. And watching films was no exception. I was constantly curious about how they picked the actors, or the cost of a scene, or how they picked that particular location. I remained constantly in awe of the filmmaking process. So it was in my early teens when I decided that I would be a part of making films, from conception to completion. I then spent the next few years immersing myself in every aspect of the behind the scenes world of production, from music videos to commercials and short films.

2015-02-23-unnamed2.jpg

Me: How does one transition from aspiring to successful when it comes to being a producer of both independent and studio projects?

MW: First and foremost, you need to find a project/story that you believe in something that will keep you going during the long and sometime tedious process that is making a movie. You must to be an extraordinary networker. The majority of the job is based on your relationship management skills and ability to talk to people and understand their individual creative needs. You must also possess an understanding of the intricate financial planning these projects require. No matter the budget, there is always a budget, and it is the producer’s job to stay within that budget and ultimately keep investors happy. Frivolous budgeting can and will ruin a project — I know of a few fantastic movies that didn’t make it into production because investors lost faith and pulled out.

Me: So basically sales savvy and good at money management equals a great producer?

MW: Yes, among many, many other things. Because managing the money means managing the expectations of the creative minds involved (director, writers, etc.). Staying within budget without compromising anyone vision is a delicate art. The producer’s responsibility is to offer creative suggestions to fill the void of a scene which can’t be shot due to budgetary constraints. However ultimately, the producer should plan accordingly in order to complete the project within budget while not compromising the overall creative vision. It is quite the delicate task.

Me: And now for the predictable question: being a woman in a male-dominated world, yadda yadda, you know where I’m going with this.

MW: There is definitely no shortage of horror stories in this industry pertaining to the treatment of women on set. I’m not going to say I’ve never been hit on inappropriately or not taken seriously because I’m a female, however for the most part I’ve been lucky to have been considered a colleague by some of the industry’s best. It’s important for women getting into production to really get to know the craft and remain confident and firm. I’ve been able to produce movies under budget numerous times, and having a reputation for achieving such a task will open doors. But like I said, there is a mountain of responsibility involved with no room for oversight, so male or female you need to be confident and resourceful at every point in the project.

Me: Any last words for aspiring filmmakers?

MW: Just start. Follow through on your ideas and learn by doing. And never hesitate to seek out those who have accomplished what you are trying to do and soak up their knowledge.

2015-02-23-unnamed3.jpg

So there you have it. I absolutely urge anyone looking to try their hand at
filmmaking to seek out an accomplished professional, like I did, to learn the intricacies of the craft. Because while you may think you can just figure it all out, production is a delicate art that cannot be approached casually.

Crazy Bitches Official Trailer 1 (2015) – Horror Comedy HD

Seven women – sisters of the Alpha Kappa Pi sorority – and their gay best friend reunite for a weekend to celebrate their pal Alice’s birthday. But at the remote ranch where they settle for leisurely days of gossip, girl time and grub, something soon seems amiss.

A number of margaritas into the first night, a dark secret is revealed. The cabin is the site of a gruesome mass murder of teenage girls on a sleepover 15 years earlier. Blood still stains the floor under new carpets and the killer still runs free.

The women take the ghost story for what it seems – a tall tale on a stormy night – and at first, the story only adds to the romance of the ranch. One girl sneaks off with the hired hand. Another seeks to rekindle her old college flame. But after a third turns up – dead – the story no longer seems silly and sex is the last thing on anyone’s mind.

One by one they are cut down, victims of the particular vanities they flaunt in each other’s faces. Soon the girls turn on each other, accusing one another of jealousy and murder. As the fun-filled weekend turns into a race against death, they wonder: which Crazy Bitch will make it out alive.

Tina Fey And Amy Poehler Roast Comedy Legend Don Rickles, Are (Predictably) Awesome

Spike TV has revealed a first look at Tina Fey and Amy Poehler’s roast tribute to legendary comedian Don Rickles — and it’s packed with the charm and laughs people have come to expect from the dynamic duo.

Fey revealed her and Poehler’s involvement in Spike’s “One Night Only: An All-Star Comedy Tribute to Don Rickles” during a segment on “Late Night With Seth Meyers” earlier this month. Apparently the women had only been at the famous Apollo Theater, where the 90-minute special was taped, for about a minute before they were pushed on stage.

Spike also released a few other clips from the roast that feature Tracy Morgan, Martin Scorsese, Robert De Niro and the man himself, Don Rickles. (Watch below.)

Among the other talents who showed up to show their respect to Rickles were David Letterman, Jerry Seinfeld, Jon Stewart, Jimmy Kimmel, John Stamos, Bob Newhart, Regis Philbin, Ray Romano and Brad Garrett.

Spike’s tribute to Don Rickles airs May 28 at 9/8c.
