Papa John’s Founder & CEO Steps Down After NFL Comments

John Schnatter, the founder and CEO of pizza chain Papa John’s, is stepping down as CEO after making remarks that the peaceful protests of the National Anthem in the NFL hurt sales. Schnatter will remain chairman of the company as leadership is shifted to an executive within the organization.

CNBC reports:

Papa John’s says its founder John Schnatter will step down as CEO next month, about two months after he publicly criticized the NFL leadership over national anthem protests by football players.

The company said Thursday that Schnatter remains chairman but be replaced as chief executive by Chief Operating Officer Steve Ritchie on Jan. 1.

Schnatter had blamed slowing sales growth on the outcry surrounding NFL players kneeling during the national anthem. Papa John’s International Inc. is an NFL sponsor and advertiser.

White supremacists and others praised Schantter for his comments regarding the NFL made during a Nov. 1 conference call, which the company apologized for two weeks later. Pizza brand competitors, perhaps sensing blood in the water, took to social media to mock Papa John’s and the stance taken by Schnatter in the process.

The company has not confirmed if Schnatter’s comments were the reason for his stepping down.

Uncle Luke Clarifies Funkmaster Flex & DJ Red Alert Comments

Uncle Luke has (sort of) apologized to Funkmaster Flex and DJ Red Alert, in advance. The 2 Live Crew frontman was honored at Friday night’s BET Hip Hop Awards with a Lifetime Achievement Award, and he’s getting ahead of any drama caused by his acceptance speech.

According to Luke, the teleprompter when out, causing him to come off the top of his head during his speech. Apparently, people were misconstruing comments he said about Flex and Red Alert as shots.

However, Luke was adamant that Flex used to break his records in NYC while Red Alert is a good friend, who along with Greg Street gave him the name “Uncle Luke.”

Any questions? Besides, “What did he say?”

10 Tips for Fighting Stigmatizing and Defamatory Comments Online

With Thanks to The Bisexual Leadership Roundtable, The Anti-Defamation League, The Daily Dot, and Facebook.

As a citizen of the United States of America, I’m proud of our country for many reasons. One of those reasons that’s especially important to me as writer, poet, and LGBTQ activist is the fact that the First Amendment grants our citizens freedom of speech–a critical condition for facilitating discussions that help our society advance.

Recently, however, I had an experience that made me question where we draw the line between freedom of speech and defamation–and what recourse there is for those who believe they’ve been defamed. Here’s what happened:

On September 30th, 2015, The Daily Dot ran my article titled “Why I celebrate my scarlet letter,” which was originally published under a different title on the Huffington Post. But when they promoted it on their Facebook page, something horrible happened.

A Facebook user made an extremely hurtful, defamatory comment about me. It was so atrocious that I won’t even repeat it here. Suffice it to say, the comment was completely unfounded. Moreover, it was a blatant example of biphobia, as well as stigmatization of people who work or have worked in the adult industry.

Of course, it was likely the product of a cyber bully looking to push some buttons. But that didn’t make it any less cruel, not to mention potentially damaging on both professional and psychological levels. So I set out to get the comment removed. America is, after all, the home of the brave, too. And every time someone stands up to a bully, it’s a step towards a safer and more tolerant society for us all.

Tip # 1: If you feel physically threatened by an online comment, report it to your local FBI office.

I didn’t feel physically threatened, though I certainly felt the comment was intended to incite prejudice against me. I decided to report it to Facebook first.

Tip # 2: Report the incident to the platform in question via its designated channels.

On Facebook, to the right of a comment, there’s a small “x” that allows you to hide it. I clicked the “x” and was presented with an option to report the comment, which I did.

Tip # 3: Engage your community.

While I waited for a response, I shared my concerns with the other members of the Bisexual Leadership Roundtable, many of whom were kind enough to also report the issue to Facebook. To our surprise, each of us received what looked like an automated response from Facebook stating the comment didn’t violate their Community Standards.

Tip # 4: Determine whether you’re using the right terminology.

I’d initially reported the comment to Facebook as harassment, but then I realized the terminology might be incorrect. Upon review of Facebook’s Community Standards, I learned they remove hate speech directed at private individuals and public figures. This begged the question: if the comment didn’t qualify as harassment, was it hate speech? Or was it defamation?

Some research into hate speech and defamation quickly showed the comment qualified as both. So despite being somewhat discouraged, I knew I had to follow through with the matter, this time using more appropriate terminology.

Tip # 5: Find other channels to communicate your concern.

There’s usually more than one way to connect with a company. Over the course of the next week, I contacted Facebook via their private messaging app, as well as through a number of email addresses I found online, requesting they reconsider their earlier decision and remove the comment. I also reached out to The Daily Dot via email and a direct message.

Tip # 6: Stay calm and focused.

As the days passed and the comment remained visible for all to see, I grew more upset and frustrated. But I realized I couldn’t let my frustration get in the way of looking at the situation objectively.

Tip # 7: Be patient.

Facebook has almost 1.5 billion users worldwide. The Daily Dot has had more than 23 million unique visitors to its website. With thousands of people contacting these companies each day, I knew it could take a while for my request to land on the right person’s desk.

Tip # 8: Seek expert advice.

After calm consideration, I decided it was time to ask the experts for help. And that’s when I had the good fortune of connecting with Norman Abbot, Assistant Regional Director at the New England Chapter of the Anti-Defamation League.

It proved to be a turning point. Norman encouraged me to keep reaching out to both The Daily Dot and Facebook. Together, we came up with the idea to email people in leadership positions about the matter.

Tip # 9: Determine who’s in a position to help you, and reach out to him or her in a positive, polite manner.

In a last-ditch effort to be heard, I wrote both to Facebook’s General Counsel, as well as Nicholas White, The Daily Dot’s Editor in Chief and CEO, once again explaining the situation and requesting they delete the comment.

To my relief, the very next day, Austin Powell, Managing Editor at The Daily Dot, emailed. He informed me that the comment was now hidden to everybody but the original poster; a strategy proven to be more effective than deleting comments or blocking users in this kind of situation.

Minutes later, Matt Silverman, Director of Audience at The Daily Dot, contacted me via a Facebook direct message, apologizing for the delay and explaining that my email had likely been overlooked among the deluge of messages his team receives every day. He also emphasized that this was exactly the kind of comment his team works to remove on a regular basis.

Finally, that same morning, Facebook ‘s legal department got back to me, saying they’d looked into the matter but by then, it had already been resolved.

Tip # 10: Make note of successful strategies, and share them with others.

Sharing successful strategies with others can be key in combatting online defamation and stigmatization.

For example, Austin Powell advises that if you have a concern about The Daily Dot, you can use their feedback widget on their website. You can also contact authors via their email addresses in their bylines. And their About page lists the full staff along with email addresses. Most publications have a similar system. And Facebook offers an online form to report a violation or infringement of your rights.

Looking back on the experience, there was a point in this process when I was almost ready to give up. I felt as if I were invisible; as if nobody at these large corporations was at all concerned about my rights and wellbeing. But the encouragement of the bisexual community, as well as Norman Abbot’s kind support and objective insights, inspired me to keep going. And when I finally received responses, they were as respectful and effective as I could wish for, especially those from The Daily Dot.

In short, the experience taught me an invaluable lesson: with community support and determination to reach people who are in a position to help, we can fight defamation and stigmatization. And that’s why I’ll forever be grateful to the Bisexual Leadership Roundtable, the Anti-Defamation League, The Daily Dot, and Facebook.

EXCLUSIVE Look At Donald Trump’s Military Record In Light Of His Comments On John McCain

Pew pew pew!

On Saturday, presidential candidate and Mexico’s favorite piñata Donald Trump made some particularly nasty comments about Senator John McCain over his POW experience. Trump said McCain is only a “war hero because he was captured.”

After considerable blowback, Trump remained firm, saying on Sunday that he will not apologize for the comments.

HuffPost has ALL CAPS EXCLUSIVELY ALL CAPS obtained Trump’s own personal military record for comparison:

Transphobic Comments From ‘Friday Night Lights’ Producer Pale In Comparison To Caitlyn Jenner’s Courage

It’s inevitable.

You can be an Olympian, a cover model and a fashion icon, but if you’re transgender, the criticism will come.

Caitlyn Jenner strode on stage at the 2015 ESPY Awards on Wednesday to accept the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. It was her first public appearance since she announced her widely lauded transition to the world in an interview with Diane Sawyer earlier this year. She gave an impassioned speech, with a simple request for viewers and her fellow athletes — show trans people your respect.

Enter Peter Berg, director of the 2004 film “Friday Night Lights” and creator of the Emmy-winning series of the same name. Berg took to Instagram early Thursday to criticize the decision to select the athlete for the award, posting a photo mashup of Jenner with U.S. Army veteran Gregory D. Gadsonwho lost both of his legs to a roadside bomb. “One man traded 2 legs for the freedom of the other to trade 2 balls for 2 boobs,” the caption reads. Berg’s addition to the post consists of one word: “Yup.”

A photo posted by Peter Berg (@pberg44) on

The Huffington Post has reached out to Berg for comment.

The Arthur Ashe award “is meant to honor individuals whose contributions transcend sports through courageous action,” ESPN said in a statement when it was forced to address criticism of its selection. “We are proud to honor Caitlyn Jenner embracing her identity and doing so in a public way.”

Award nominations are controversial — some worthy nominees get snubbed and others overlooked. Individuals like Lauren Hill, the inspiring 19-year-old basketball player who died from brain cancer earlier this year, are equally deserving of praise and admiration.

But the criticism surrounding Jenner’s selection hasn’t been based on her athletic prowess, her activism or her courage. It’s based on deeply seeded transphobia perpetuated by those who focus on genitalia rather than gender identity — people who ask invasive personal questions that fuel dangerous tabloid voyeurism.

The world of sports is still a notoriously unaccepting place for many trans athletes. States like Virginia and North Carolina require students to play on teams based on the gender listed on their birth certificate, and no openly transgender competitor has ever participated in the Olympics, though they may be allowed to.

Jenner’s actions unequivocally transcend the nature of a sports landscape that’s still struggling to accept gay athletes, let alone transgender ones. Her bravery compelled a room of many of the world’s most celebrated athletes to give her a standing ovation.

“Trans people deserve something vital. They deserve your respect,” Jenner said at the event. “And from that respect comes a more compassionate community, a more empathetic society and a better world for all of us.”

The criticism may be inevitable now, but it won’t be for much longer. A better world, Caitlyn’s world, is right around the corner.

Take note, Mr. Berg.

UPDATE: 6:25 p.m. — Berg espoused support for Jenner and “trans people everywhere” in a Thursday evening Instagram post. He wrote that he’d intended for his original post to shed light on “our courageous returning war veterans, many of whom have sacrificed their bodies and mental health for our country.”

In fairness, the former star of Love & Hip Hop did do exactly what Nicki suggested. Budden also added, ” I do appreciate them both keeping the hope of love alive.”

Jon Stewart Slams Donald Trump Supporters For Defending ‘Mexican Rapists’ Comments

Donald Trump has found himself in the center of controversy since he first announced his bid for presidency, and Jon Stewart is having a field day.

On Thursday night’s show, “The Daily Show” host told viewers he wanted to thank one person “who’s been there really throughout this whole run, but specially near the end of the run.” That person was Trump.

“Donald recently glided back into my life on his solid gold up-and-down people mover, cranked up the unauthorized Neil Young, opened up his crazy hole, and promised me I would never be without material again,” Stewart told his viewers.

The focus of Stewart’s segment was a string of anti-immigrant remarks Trump made during his presidential announcement speech. You may remember hearing the Donald say: “They’re sending people that have lots of problems, and they’re bringing those problems with us. They’re bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists. And some, I assume, are good people.”

Like many of us, Stewart was baffled by these comments, but even more so by the people who continued to defend them.

“The one good thing to come out of this is that the farce of his candidacy is finally exposed: his un-seriousness on display, for all people and voters to see! And the results will be obvious,” said Stewart, before showing that Trump is actually in second place among Republican voters in a national poll in three states flashed on screen.

“F–k me,” was all he could say.

Pope Francis’s Comments On Heterosexual Parenting Alienate Gay Catholics

On Sunday June 14, Pope Francis addressed more than 25,000 faithful on the importance of heterosexual parenting during his general audience — just one day after thousands marched in Rome’s LGBT pride parade.

Heterosexual marriage makes for happier couples, the pope said, and is essential for healthy parenting.

“Children mature seeing their father and mother [happy],” Francis argued. “Their identity matures being confronted with the love their father and mother have, confronted with this difference.”

The pope called the differences between men and women fundamental, and said these differences make heterosexual couples strong. “What great richness this diversity is, a diversity which becomes complementary, but also reciprocal. It binds them, one to the other,” he said.

Francis’s comments may seem out of touch to many, particularly as several Catholic-majority countries have been among those leading the charge for legal same-sex marriage. Many of the nations that allow gay marriage — like Brazil, France and Spain — are also some of the most Catholic countries in the world.

Historically Catholic Ireland approved same-sex marriage by a popular referendum in May, leading Dublin archbishop Diarmuid Martin — despite voting against the measure — to say the church was in need of a “reality check.”

For LGBT Catholics, the pope’s comments are particularly hurtful. Marianne Duddy-Burke, executive director of Catholic LGBT advocacy group DignityUSA, is a parent of two adopted children. She told The Huffington Post that Catholics tend to be more progressive than church leaders on the issue of same-sex families. But not all LGBT families are willing to remain in a church they feel rejected by, she said. Attitudes like like those expressed in Pope Francis’s comments perpetuate a culture of exclusion.

“This leads to the refusal to honor and support families that don’t look like the model held up by church officials, and, even worse, the failure to see and address problems in families headed by heterosexually married couples,” Duddy-Burke told The Huffington Post.

LGBT families aren’t the only ones who might feel left out by the pope’s championing of heterosexual two-parent households, added Francis DeBernardo, executive director of Catholic LGBT advocacy group New Ways Ministry.

“Pope Francis’ message…is harmful to many others in the Catholic Church: single-parent families, families where emotional and physical abuse occurs, families who are separated geographically because of political or economic situations, to name a few,” DeBernardo told HuffPost. “In focusing his attention on a standard of male-female child-rearing, Pope Francis ignores the real economic, political, cultural, and psychological forces which harm contemporary families around the globe.”

To combat the bias against LGBT families, Duddy-Burke said she will travel to Philadelphia for the pope’s visit in September. She and a group of Catholic families and bishops from around the world will ask Pope Francis to meet with them and hear their stories.

“Sizable majorities of Catholics readily embrace their LGBT members, and have grown comfortable with a wide range of family configurations,” she said. “They are impatient for the leadership to catch up!”

Dolce & Gabbana Face Outrage After Controversial Comments About Gay Families

In an interview with the Italian magazine Panorama, designers Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana of Dolce & Gabbana had some contentious things to say about same-sex families.

According to translations, the pair — who dated for 23 years and broke up in 2005 — stated that children born through IVF are “children of chemistry, synthetic children. Uteruses for rent, semen chosen from a catalog.”

“I am gay, I cannot have a child. I guess you cannot have everything in life,” Dolce added. “Life has a natural course, some things cannot be changed. One is the family.”

Their comments sparked quite a bit of controversy. Sir Elton John, who has two children via a surrogate and married longtime partner David Furnish in December, responded to the designers’ comments on Instagram.

Elton John isn’t the only celebrity who has expressed outrage over Dolce and Gabbana’s comments. Well-known celebrity chef Art Smith is planning a protest party that’s he’s calling “Take The Hate Off The Runway.”

“As a gay married couple with four gorgeous children, my husband Jesus Salgueiro and I join families across the world — gay and straight — in protest against these hateful, ugly, loveless comments by Dolce and Gabbana,” he told The Huffington Post. “Behind the beauty was always ugly. As Dr. Maya Angelou said, ‘When people show you who they are, believe them.'”

Dolce & Gabbana’s rep did not immediately respond to HuffPost’s request for comment.

John Legend Disagreed With Kanye West’s Comments About Beck

While John Legend found Kanye West’s near interruption of Beck’s Album of the Year speech “funny,” the 36-year-old singer was not as amused by West’s comments following the Grammys broadcast.

“When I said that was funny and people should lighten up about it, that’s what I meant,” Legend wrote on Instagram. “I wasn’t referring to Kanye’s comments after the show which I have now seen and heard. I disagree with those comments.”

Speaking to E! after the Grammys broadcast, West said Beck “needs to respect artistry” and “should have given his award to Beyoncé.” The rapper also criticized Grammys voters for “diminishing art, and not respecting the craft, and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music.”

“Beck is indeed a true artist’s artist. He’s a multi-instrumentalist, a creative and unique singer-songwriter whose music I have bought and enjoyed over the years,” Legend wrote on Tuesday. “While his win may have been a surprise to many, it’s not because he’s not a great artist deserving of recognition. All of the other nominated artists, including Beyoncé, are incredible in their own right, and arguments could be made for any of them deserving to win. This is not an objective process. It’s completely subjective, in fact. We can all debate who we thought should have won. But even if you didn’t vote for him, plenty of our colleagues in the music business did. These voters are all creators who love music and have dedicated their lives to it, and the plurality of them chose Beck as the Album of the Year. I respect their decision and congratulate Beck on this outstanding accomplishment.”

Read Legend’s full statement below:

I want to clarify my thoughts on Kanye’s actions at the Grammys on Sunday. First of all, Kanye is my friend. He believed in me years ago when very few did, and I wouldn’t be here without his support. That doesn’t mean we’ll agree on everything, but it does mean that I am grateful to him. And I also believe he is one of the most gifted people I’ve had the privilege of working with. In my comments to US Weekly, I said that when Kanye walked up on stage, mimicking his interruption of Taylor Swift’s VMA acceptance speech, then turned around as if he was just playing, most of the room including me saw this as funny, as a way of taking the piss out of himself for his infamous behavior several years ago. When I said that was funny and people should lighten up about it, that’s what I meant. I wasn’t referring to Kanye’s comments after the show which I have now seen and heard. I disagree with those comments. Beck is indeed a true artist’s artist. He’s a multi-instrumentalist, a creative and unique singer-songwriter whose music I have bought and enjoyed over the years. While his win may have been a surprise to many, it’s not because he’s not a great artist deserving of recognition. In addition to clarifying his comments to Us Weekly, Legend also used his social media presence to explain a photograph posted by West’s wife, Kim Kardashian, immediately following Sunday’s Grammys. In the pic, which Kardashian captioned, “This is the Beck won that award face?!?!?!” Legend looks surprised.

Azealia Banks Calls Kendrick Lamar Comments “Dumbest Sh*t I’ve Ever Heard A Black Man Say”

Azealia Banks joined the Twitter discussion regarding Kendrick Lamar’s Billboard cover story — particularly statements he made regarding Black people.

Citing that Michael Brown’s death in Ferguson, Mo. was a travesty, Lamar continued “But when we don’t have respect for ourselves, how do we expect them to respect us? It starts from within. Don’t start with just a rally, don’t start from looting — it starts from within.”

The Harlem rapper focused her angst on the aforementioned statement, calling it the “dumbest sh*t I’ve ever heard a black man say.”

Banks has been at the head of multiple racial discussions in the last few weeks, directing public critiques at Iggy Azalea for cultural appropriation, arguing her case on Hot 97 and even engaging in Twitter beef with Action Bronson.

The remainder of the Broke With Exquisite Taste rapper’s commentary about Kendrick can be found after the jump.

Kaley Cuoco Says Her Comments On Feminism Were ‘Taken Out Of Context’

Kaley Cuoco wants to clear the air after her controversial comments about feminism in Redbook Magazine made headlines.

The “Big Bang Theory” star posted a photo of herself from the magazine’s February 2015 issue on her Instagram account on Thursday, adding a lengthy caption apologizing to those who were offended by her quotes:

When Redbook asked Cuoco if she considered herself a feminist, Cuoco responded:

Is it bad if I say no? It’s not really something I think about. Things are different now, and I know a lot of the work that paved the way for women happened before I was around … I was never that feminist girl demanding equality, but maybe that’s because I’ve never really faced inequality.

The 29-year-old also told the magazine that she enjoys cooking for and “serving” her tennis player husband Ryan.

“It makes me feel like a housewife; I love that. I know it sounds old-fashioned, but I like the idea of women taking care of their men,” she said.
