Matt Barnes Wins Sole Custody Of Sons Over Gloria Govan

GQ's 2018 All-Stars Celebration - Arrivals

Source: FayesVision/WENN.com / WENN

The legal battle between former NBA player Matt Barnes and reality television actress Gloria Govan has been quite a bitter journey for the former married couple. This week, one issue that split the pair was settled when the courts awarded Barnes sole physical and legal custody of the pair’s twin boys.

TMZ reports:

The two have been at war for years — and today, Matt obtained an 18-month restraining order against Gloria claiming she’s a physical danger to him.

The restraining order was granted through May 2020 — but does not extend to the kids because the judge doesn’t believe Gloria poses a danger to them.

During Thursday’s hearing, the judge ruled Gloria will get regular visitation — including every other weekend from Friday until Monday morning. She is also allowed to have dinner with the kids every Wednesday evening.

The two are still working out the custody arrangements for the holidays including Christmas, Thanksgiving and New Years.

As part of Thursday’s hearing, the judge also ordered Govan to complete 26 sessions of anger management and 10 parenting classes.

Hopefully for the good of the children, Barnes and Govan can work out an effective way to co-parent. Barnes is also expecting a baby girl with his girlfriend and model Anansa Sims.

NYPD Takes Suspect Into Custody After ‘Act of Terror’ in Lower Manhattan That Left Eight People Dead, and Injured at Least Twelve

NEW YORK — In what is being described as an act of terror, New York Police Department officials are still investigating an incident in lower Manhattan involving a vehicle that left eight people dead and injured more than a dozen.
In a press conference with NYPD Police Commissioner James O’Neill and FBI officials, as well as New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio described the incident as “an act of terror and a particularly cowardly act of terror aimed at innocent civilians going about their lives who had no idea what was about to hit them.”
The mayor continued, “We know that this act was intended to break our spirit but we also know that New Yorkers are strong, New Yorkers are resilient and our spirit will never be moved by an act of violence, an act meant to intimidate us. We have been tested before as a city very narthex site of today’s tragedy and New Yorkers do not give in in the face of these kids of actions. We will respond as we always do. We will be undeterred.”
De Blasio also asked all New Yorkers to be vigilant and “to live by the idea

Back to School: 3 Ways To Tell If Your Child Custody Agreement Is The Right Fit

Most co-parenting families with school-aged children have two basic parenting time schedules: one for school vacations and holidays and the other for the school year. If you and your former spouse separated or divorced over the summer, this month may be a crucial turning point as the two of you test out the “school year” portion of your child custody agreement for the first time. What can you expect from this new schedule, and how can you tell if changes are needed in order to help your children truly thrive in the coming months? Here are three ways to tell if the custody agreement you have in place is the best fit for your child, and for you.

Does Your Parenting Time Plan Reflect Realistic Expectations?
It’s natural for emotions to run high during a separation or divorce, especially when it comes to critical matters such as deciding child custody. Parents may initially make unrealistic custody grabs based on fear or insecurity, demanding full custody or the vast majority of parenting time, even if their work schedule or living arrangement makes this kind of plan impossible or even detrimental to their children.

If you veered at first towards making bold custody claims out of your hurt or angry feelings, hopefully you had an attorney by your side who was able to steer you towards making sound decisions for the sake of your children. If you were not so lucky, you may have a parenting time plan in place that might work in the short term, but down the road is at risk of imploding when schedules clash and you start showing up late for pick-ups (or not at all), or put your kids in situations in which they lack proper care and supervision.

Yes, it can take time for any co-parenting family to settle into a new school year routine. Still, take some time this month to give your parenting time plan an honest assessment. Does it reflect your need to punish your former spouse or your child’s needs to have a calm, stable school year with love and support from both parents? If your self-assessment reveals a parenting time plan that could use some tweaks, check in with an attorney to learn more about child custody modification, which you and your former spouse may be able to renegotiate on your own terms.

Does Your Parenting Time Plan Reflect Your Children’s Ages, Activities & Needs?
When you decided on a child custody arrangement, you probably took into consideration a number of factors such as your children’s ages, personalities and developmental needs; your careers and outside commitments; child care and the geographical distance between parents’ homes; and your children’s academic and extracurricular activities.

What is important to remember is that children can change, sometimes dramatically, in only the space of a few months. For example, maybe your child will discover their passion for soccer this year and now have practice and home and away games most of the week. Or perhaps your child will unfortunately hit a stumbling block in math and benefit from after school tutoring. Or maybe you will get a promotion at work with more pay — and more hours. On the other hand, perhaps your child is now in preschool or kindergarten and can handle more frequent transitions between parental homes. Or your child recently developed a health or medical need that makes staying in one home preferable.

As inevitable changes occur for your child (or for you or your former spouse), keep track of how they may affect your parenting time plan. For example, if your child has back-to-back tutoring and then sports practice after school, does it still make sense to schedule a dinner together on the same night? Or could a different plan benefit your child?

Parenting time plans are binding, so if you and your former spouse mutually agree to make permanent changes to the schedule that you believe are your child’s best interests, you will need to submit these changes to the courts. Also be aware that if you informally cede parenting time to your former spouse on a regular basis, your former spouse could go to court seeking to have these changes incorporated, with or without your consent.

Are You and Your Former Spouse Able to Maintain Communication?
Finally, a make or break issue for many parenting time plans is how well co-parents can communicate with each other to keep their schedule on track and workable for all involved. Something as simple as arranging to text each other with neutral comments to confirm pick ups and drops offs (i.e., “Will be at bus stop at 4 pm on Friday”) can go a long ways towards creating a positive co-parenting relationship. There are even divorce apps to help co-parents stay on the same page. All you need to do is upload your current parenting time plan and the app will send you both reminders of who needs to be where and when. Or go low-tech by using a notebook that you pass back and forth during custody swaps with notes on how your child is doing and other messages.

The bottom line? Consider it your ongoing homework assignment this year to gauge how well your parenting time plan is working, and whether you are doing your part to make it work. One last point to keep in mind? The old “dog ate my homework” excuse doesn’t apply when it comes to parenting your kids.

5 Tips for Sharing Custody

Divorce. Not fun. Messy. Kids in the middle. It doesn’t have to be this way. I had a “nice” divorce. This doesn’t mean it didn’t suck or there wasn’t pain or hurt. It just means we didn’t have to destroy each other or the children in the process.

Want to know the biggest upside to letting anger go and coming to a place of peace? Life is more enjoyable. So, you have two choices — you can play life on HARD MODE or you can make it easier by being flexible.

Now, of course, you need two willing partners to make it super smooth, but even if you are the only one being decent, you can still make it easier on yourself.

1. Establish ground rule #1. No Nasty Talk to the Children. This is a non negotiable. This is why. You can complain to your adult friends all you want. (Keep it to a minumum, you have a life remember!) However, you cannot complain about your ex to your children. Zip it.

2. Don’t fight over the kids’ things. I know you buy the expensive clothes and your ex doesn’t. Listen to me closely here — you aren’t wearing the clothes — your kids are. So, why do you care where the clothes are, as long as they are with your children? Your ex is not wearing your 6 year olds shorts, I promise. Now, I understand, some things are super special or for special occassions. In this case, it’s okay to specify that you’d like something back. You can do this respectfully.

3. No tit for tat. As much as it’s tempting to play this game, please refrain. Your brain can only hold so much info, so don’t wreck your working memory holding thoughts of the fact that your ex is 15 minutes late every time, so you have to be 15 minutes late. Come on kids — you aren’t kids. LET IT GO!

4. Be flexible. Just being flexible adds an extra layer of joy to your life. So, your ex wants to take the kids on Tuesday to something special. If you don’t have anything planned — why not? Do you need to exert your power and control just to be an asshole or can you be flexible and do it for the kids? I know, I know, you are always flexible and your ex isn’t. Such is life. Do it anyway. Your kids will thank you. BONUS – they will learn how to be flexible and I ASSURE you, when the years go by, they will know who was the flexible parent and who was the asshole.

5. Keep it simple. Perhaps you are in a situation where you ex is completely unreasonable and will not budge an inch on being cool. Check out apps like Talking Parents – and keep your communication to the app. You can still participate in rules 1-4 and walk away knowing that you took the high road. The ex will be miserable on the low road, but you don’t care. You are moving on. Don’t get sucked in by miserable snakes.

An Open Letter to President Obama: Kelly Rutherford’s Custody Case

2015-05-04-1430763598-9981357-hh.jpg

Dear President Obama,

I know that you are a busy man, but by now I’m sure you’ve heard about Kelly Rutherford’s plight to bring her children home to the United States of America? As you are probably aware, Kelly Rutherford and Daniel Giersch’s children (two American-born citizens) were ripped from the arms of their primary parent by Judge Teresa A. Beaudet in an unprecedented move designed to cater to Daniel’s inability to enter the United States of America.

You see, Mr. President, Daniel’s visa was revoked due to suspicions and swirling allegations that he is an international drugs and weapons dealer. I ask you, if the United States has deemed this individual suspicious enough to ban him from our country, how are we allowing these two young children to be removed from their country and be shipped off to a foreign land where neither parent actually has citizenship? Plot twist: Daniel is a German citizen and Kelly is an American citizen yet the children are residing in France.

In an interview with People Magazine, Kelly was asked about the moment that she heard Judge Teresa Beaudet’s decision, Kelly replied,

I remember when she made the ruling, I just thought, ‘There’s something wrong here. Not because of their father and I or anything — I’ve always wanted my kids to have a relationship with him, and I’ve really only encouraged that all along.

When I went into court, I never asked for money, and I never asked for full custody. I just wanted what was right for them and their well-being moving forward.

In a statement released by Kelly’s attorney, Wendy Murphy, she explained the driving force behind this new petition which will be landing on your desk very soon,

This is a political problem for President Obama and a constitutional problem for the courts. The president recently issued an executive order declaring that children born in this country to illegal immigrant parents must be allowed to remain in this country.

Mr. Obama specifically talked about the importance of mothers and children being allowed to stay together in America. How could Kelly and her children not be entitled to at least the same legal protections?

If Kelly’s children are not rescued from involuntary expatriation to France, it would mean that President Obama believes non-citizens are entitled to greater rights than citizens in this country.”

Labeled by legal consultant, Dan Abrams as “The worst custody decision in United States history,” this is a your opportunity to correct a heart-breaking situation which continues to baffle and terrify American’s across the country. I encourage you to bring Hermes and Helena back to their home in the United States of America.

Sincerely,

Tina Swithin — Family Court Advocate

White God: A Dog-Eat-Dog View of Custody

Custody kids may just be the metaphor for societies’ underdogs.

The new feature film White God, is a parable about Europe’s challenging immigration issues told through the emotional lens of a messy coming-of-age custody story. Think of a sequel to last year’s, What Maisie Knew. Could this be part of a larger genre?

In my work as a therapist in Los Angeles, California, I consistently advocate for the right of children of custody to have A-rated parenting even as they shuttle between two different households and the cultures which require code-switching between them. My message is clear: Childhood should not be compromised by parental separation or divorce.

From its opening chilly scenes in late winter, White God contradicts my bias for a child-focused approach to custody issues. The story opens with a poorly planned exchange of a ‘tween girl, an only child, Lili (Zsófia Psotta) and her mutt, Hagen, from mother’s care to father’s home. Whether mother was reasonable or not, it could be argued she was presumptuous to assume it would be acceptable that Lili could take her dog, while she was away at a professional conference with her new husband, for three months.

Lili’s burdens are accentuated by parents who clearly have problems communicating. The father, a quality-control inspector at a slaughterhouse, is humorless and emotionally blunted. Frugal, rigid and stingy, he is slow to adapt. Portrayed as a loner and single, he is in desperate need of parenting education to help him understand, first of all that Lili is growing and is no longer a toddler.

The larger context of White God are the political and cultural tensions around assimilation — or lack of it — sweeping contemporary Europe when young Lili (Zsófia Psotta) is forced to give up her beloved mongrel because Hagen’s mixed-breed heritage is deemed “unfit” by “the state.” A hefty fine must be paid in order to keep him, which the father refuses to pay.

Heartbroken, she and the dog Hagen begin a treacherous journey back towards each other, just as Lili eventually does with her father. Meanwhile the unwanted and so-called “unfit” dogs form a pack and rise up under a new leader, Hagen, who has learned in his journey through the streets, underground fighting circuits, and animal control centers how to bite the hand that beats him. After the dogs seize an opportunity to escape and revolt against mankind, courageous Lili may be the only person who can halt this unexpected war between man and pup.

Upset and distraught, Lili rebels and suffers from lack of parental supervision and insensitivity (her mother never even calls), as the dogs suffer horrible indignities. Have quiet bystanders to immigration issues become like the mother with her blasé attitude. Have many of us unwittingly become colluders with the dominant culture?

Mother may have not forgotten how out of touch with his feelings father had been as a spouse in their marriage, but she may have given him too much credit for being able to step up his parenting and tune into the child. Father is only minimally present. There is no one to keep tabs on the extent to which he has hardened and shrunk with the passage of time even as the mother’s life moved onto a better place.

Co-parents are routinely encouraged to rise to the occasion and trust that their co-parent will make sound decisions when the kid they share is in the other’s care. The good news is father finally comes through by the end of the movie. In the spirit of giving the benefit of the doubt to her co-parent, mother may have overrode her fears by hoping for the best, but was she too cavalier?

Every stage of parenting has its challenges, but custody kids are at greater risk for being over-exposed to adversity. Custody kids routinely grow up too fast because of lack of parental alignment. Parenting from latency to adolescence is hard enough under the best of circumstances. Blunders are to be expected.

Leaving father and daughter to their own devices in this drama, results in a number of short-term disasters. In this battle of flesh and spirit, punctuated by a junior orchestra prepping for a spring recital of the score to Richard Wagner’s, “Tannhauser,” and scenes that remind me of Alfred Hitchcock’s The Birds, matters devolve from bad to worse for the dog’s and Lili’s predicaments before turning around.

Lili’s and Hagen’s neglect that borders on abuse finally steers back to a place of grace. With stunningly choreographed scenes featuring a cast of over 200 canine rescues, all of whom were eventually adopted into good homes, White God is a thrilling and visceral fairy tale.

In this universe custody kids are at risk. White God is a grim view, reminding me of the realistic science fiction of Margaret Atwood, of our world to come in which indignities are routinely visited upon animals and each other by supposed “human superiors” including parents.

White God can be so difficult at times to watch that I don’t consider it a spoiler alert to say be patient and stay with it to the finish. Hungarian director Kornél Mundruczó presents a masterful work, at times brutal and harrowing, but deeply thought provoking. By the end this dystopic allegory pays off, delivering on many levels.

Mom Says Grandma Stole Custody Of The Kids (VIDEO)

It’s grandma vs. mom in a heated custody battle that has been going on for over five years. Although a court ordered the grandma, Marcia, permanent custody of Brooke’s two kids, Brooke says her mom is a “monster” who stole custody of her kids. “Marcia is always trying to paint me as an unfit parent, constantly making up lies about me that I’m a prostitute, do drugs, sell drugs … it’s absolutely absurd,” says Brooke, 39, admitting that she has struggled with drugs. She believes her mom purposely has tried to alienate her from her two boys. “Visiting my sons was like going to a prison with Marcia as a warden,” she says, and is further incensed that her mom has asked for her visits with the kids to be put in writing two weeks prior, which even the court doesn’t require of her. “Marcia is a narcissist and she’s on a crusade to ruin my life,” concludes Brooke.

Marcia, who won temporary custody in 2009 and then permanent custody in 2011, says she had no choice but to raise her grandkids. “Brooke is not fit to raise her sons. She’s abused drugs in the past, she’s been in abusive relationships with men, and Brooke hasn’t abided by the court’s ruling for her to drug test and take her parenting classes,” she says. “It’s Brooke’s fault that I have permanent custody. Brooke had to show the courts that she could be a fit mother and she did not do that.” In response to Brooke’s accusations that she’s demeaning her daughter to the kids, she says, “Out of concern, I have shared stories, but I do not try to ruin Brooke’s reputation and I do not badmouth her in public.”

Watch the video above as the women turn to Dr. Phil for help, and see what happens when the kids speak up.

Teens Missing For 6 Months Send Video With Custody Demands (VIDEO)

Brian says he has been living a parent’s worst nightmare since last July, when his teenage daughters, Sydney, 15, and Danielle, 14, vanished while visiting their mother, Michelle, for the summer. Two weeks later, Michelle also disappeared. Brian, who was granted full legal custody of the girls, says he believes his ex-wife is hiding them.

“I am absolutely convinced Michelle and her family know where the girls are,” Brian says. “They are responsible for their disappearance,” an allegation her family denies.

Brian’s oldest daughter, Brittany, 19, says she believes her sisters ran away so they wouldn’t have to live with their dad, who she claims is overbearing, controlling and abusive. “I thought it was normal to be afraid of my dad,” says Brittany, who hasn’t seen her father in a year. “It was like living with a ticking time bomb.”

No one has seen Sydney or Danielle since July 9, 2014, but a few videos of the teens have surfaced. Dr. Phil tells Brian that a new video of the teens was received by the Dr. Phil show. Watch it above, and see Brian’s reaction.

On Dr. Phil on Monday, Dr. Phil looks back at what the court reports say about Brian and Michelle during the custody dispute. Could that offer any clues into the teens’ disappearance? Click here to see more from this show.
