Diane von Furstenberg and Joel Horowitz: Job Done

JOB DONE: Following a report in WWD Friday that Joel Horowitz had exited Diane von Furstenberg as cochairman, von Furstenberg and Horowitz said in a joint statement that, “We joined forces in 2012 to strengthen the DVF infrastructure and find the perfect ceo. In April, we accomplished that by bringing Paolo Riva on board. We are proud of the strides we have made and look forward to seeing the company continue to thrive upon the foundation we have built.”
It was unclear when Horowitz exited DVF, although sources said it was May or June. At the time he joined the company, he said he was looking forward to “working with the management team to further grow the business.” Given his experience taking Tommy Hilfiger Inc. public, and proven ability to lead a public firm, there has been much speculation that the ultimate prize for DVF was an initial public offering.
While Horowitz’s departure doesn’t rule out that possibility, it does presume that an IPO isn’t in the immediate future for DVF. Riva has said his priority for the company is to “start to build a strategy for the brand and what it will look like in years to come.” Under Horowitz’s tenure,

Cycling Style Done the Copenhagen Way

Photographed by Nabile Quenum

Copenhagen is a cyclist’s dream, an old cobblestone city where more than 200 miles of bike lanes allow Danes to dart around with ease. Famously, the city’s two-wheeled way of life calls for a “cycle chic” look—riding in a silk top and gingham slingbacks for every day, say, instead of Spandex for exercise-only bouts—and this week, the showgoers at Copenhagen Fashion Week took that lifestyle to the next level.

Bikers pushed through the humid air in vibrant fur, of all things, from a rust-colored chubby worn with cream flares to a bright blue stole flapping casually in the breeze. Others chose to layer further: quilted moto jackets draped over shoulders, bleached denim shirts knotted around waists. Jaunty A-line skirts in suede or denim and heels, for that matter, were a no-brainer; as that old Danish saying goes, if you can’t pedal in four-inch Gucci bamboo slides, should you be biking at all? Here, fourteen cycle-chic shots from Copenhagen Fashion Week to inspire your own pedaling adventures. After all, New York Fashion Weekand Citi Bike!—awaits.

7 Cardinal Sins To Avoid If You Get Your Eyebrows Done

Messing around with your eyebrows is a serious matter, and there are few people who feel more strongly about that fact than brow artists. Anyone with decent vision and a clean mirror can remove thick, stray brow hairs. But an expert can create an eyebrow shape that fits your face perfectly.

When you overpluck or trim too much, achieving beautiful brows doesn’t come as easy. Want to avoid the wrath of your brow artist? Avoid the seven no-nos below.

1. Filling in your eyebrows with heavy makeup before your appointment. Wearing brow makeup makes it harder for the brow specialist to see what hair is actually there, according to Caroline K., a senior specialist at hair removal salon Spruce & Bond. “It covers up the fine, baby hairs that we need to tweeze to get that nice shaped brow,” she says. Although we do always clean the brow before tweezing, there is a risk that the leftover residue from the makeup can clog the newly open pores! Come in with a naked brow and let the experts fill them in for you after your brow service.”

2. Having unrealistic expectations about your eyebrows. “It’s true, we all want what we can’t have; and to some it can be extreme. Please don’t come in with unrealistic ideas on how your eyebrows should look (think Pamela Anderson thin eyebrows wanting to leave the studio that day with thick, full brows like Cara Delevingne),” says Caroline K. “It just won’t happen! I’m not saying that it could never happen, but it could take weeks or even months.”

Boom Boom Brow Bar owner Malynda Viglotti recommends bringing in a picture of yourself with brows that you loved from a certain point in time. Also, being able to explain to the brow artist whether you like a fuller brow or a more styled brow is crucial. “Communication is key because once you take the hair out it’s gone and takes months to grow in,” she says.

3. Going somewhere new to get your brows done. Caroline K. knows it can be tempting to go to the most convenient salon or spa while you are out of town and can’t see your regular brow specialist. “But once you cheat, there will be regret; and all those weeks and months of working so hard to get your brows where they need to be will go down the drain,” she says.

Viglotti echoes this belief, adding: “We can only work with what you have and if you have nothing then, you have to let it grow all back. It takes 3-6 months sometimes.”

 4. Not disclosing whether you’ve been prescribed topical medications or acne treatments, including Retin-A and Accutane. These medications may cause skin to peel or exfoliate and can affect the outcome of your brow shaping appointment. “If you are going to wax, tell the aesthetician because your skin is hyper sensitive. And maybe consider the option not to wax but to tweeze at that time because you don’t want to lift skin,” says Viglotti.

5. Tweezing gray hairs at home. ”Don’t do it. I repeat, Don’t do it,” says Caroline K. “I know it’s hard to see those gray brow hairs randomly pop in the older we get. But do understand, you need those hairs there!” The professional admits to seeing way too many self-conscious women tweeze them away only to leave them with sparse and patchy brows. It makes it harder to create the brow shape that best fits your needs. There is always an option to tint your brows to cover up those unwanted, but needed, grey hairs.

6. Attempting brow waxing after a spray tan: This one is pretty self-explanatory but Viglotti says that if the aesthetician applies the wax and peels it off, you can rip off the tan, too.

7. Flat out lying: “We know if you’ve done Botox or can tell if you’ve been tweezing between [visits]. We want you to have the best brows! We want you to feel beautiful. So let’s work together,” Viglotti says.

What Evan Wolfson and Marriage Equality Have Done for the People Who Despise Them

At a moment when Marriage Equality has become national law, albeit by the slimmest of margins, (and, thank you Justice Kennedy), LGBTQI folk and our allies would be moronic not to realize how harrowing is this decision for millions who don’t share our belief in what is now deemed to be a Constitutionally guaranteed right. Revolted by their visualizations of what same-sex unions mean, and haunted by unreal notions, including that we will soon agitate for the freedom to marry dogs, they spin their wheels in an effort to comprehend what has happened to a country they thought they understood as one explicitly defined by the Bible.

In fact, what “the father of marriage equality” Evan Wolfson and his colleague, Mark Solomon, (among others who worked at Freedom to Marry) have done is to make the nation stronger. Though our adversaries don’t yet realize it, this transformation of consciousness will be perceived much in the same light as the 1919 law granting women the right to vote. Or the momentous Civil Rights — and Voting Rights — legislation which LBJ passed, thereby enfranchising African Americans. Both advances were epochal; both had been met with stout resistance; in both cases, the losing side bewailed the future of the United States, as previously received.

As previously received….

Therein lies their fallacy and the same blunder which opponents of Marriage Equality make today. For in these movements towards “a more perfect union” postulated by the Constitution, the Republic and its people make actual progress. In the process, of course, old givens are recycled; that which was known — a received wisdom, oftentimes never questioned — are subjected to new inquiry. It is the never-ending quality of regeneration at the heart of the American Experiment: our willingness to start over, to cast aside the unworthy or the unworkable and put our shoulders to the wheel in the service of a finer and more compassionate Whole. And this is the very essence of healthy democracy.

One side doesn’t necessarily have to degrade or shame the other for being tardy. As Lao Tze wrote 2500 years ago, “If one leads, another must follow.” It is the law of Nature; it’s also human nature — to grow and stretch, expand and put aside the archaic in favor of what meets the reality of the Present.

This is where we are as a People: in the Present.

The gift which Evan Wolfson, Mark Solomon and their colleagues at Freedom to Marry bestowed upon the nation is to help harness a huge and still-expanding recognition of humanness. And human diversity. In its way, it is as stunning an achievement as the Emancipation Proclamation or the Supreme Court decision in Brown vs. the Board of Education. As a civil people, we have the right to expect leaders to lead; legislators to legislate; and courts to rule. This is the usually difficult, oftentimes infuriating, way in which our system plays out. That some will bridle is to be expected. But, in due course, they certainly will come to appreciate that what makes us truly strong isn’t our weaponry. Our power — true power — lies in our character. Some may call it virtue. I do. But in leading us to this wider embrace of our own citizens, irrespective of superficial differences, the patriots who ushered this issue forward brought us into the moment, reminded us of whom, and what, we are and renewed our collective sense of Self.

They are heroes.

Jessica Lange Confirms She’s ‘Done’ With ‘American Horror Story’

Jessica Lange is officially leaving the “American Horror Story” franchise. The actress, who’s starred in all four seasons of Ryan Murphy’s anthology horror series, previously said that the most recent season of “Freak Show” would be her last.

During Sunday’s “AHS” panel at PaleyFest in Los Angeles, Lange confirmed the news. “Yes, I’m done,” she said. “We’ve had a great run here. I absolutely love doing these four characters, and in all madness, I love the writers and Ryan and the insanity of shooting it.” Let that sad news sink in.

While Lange may be gone, the “AHS” gang announced a new cast member who will star alongside Lady Gaga in the upcoming season of “Hotel.” Matt Bomer, who made a guest appearance in one episode of “Freak Show,” will co-star in “Hotel.” The actor was quiet about who he will play, saying only, “I can’t confirm nor deny that there will be a romantic relationship [with Lady Gaga’s character].” Cheyenne Jackson of “Glee” will also join the new season, but wouldn’t spill anything else about his character.

No further details have been announced about “Hotel,” but there are fan theories about a real-life hotel it could be based on. We also finally learned what those “Freak Show” top hat clues were all about.

Military Almost Done Building Flying Dragons

Did you hear that the U.S. military is developing flying dragons that shoot laser beams from their eyes? They don’t say that directly, but you can see the parts coming together.

A drone is about halfway to being a flying dragon already. And recently the military tested a laser weapon that destroyed a truck at a distance. It is only a matter of time before the military miniaturizes laser weapons and puts them on drones.

I think the first generation of laser drones will look boring, like today. But eventually someone will say, “Let’s make the drones look like flying dragons that shoot laser beams out of their eyes!” Someone else will point out that a flying dragon will not be as aerodynamic as a normal drone. But that is a small price to pay for the coolness of it all. Just think of the bragging rights.

North Korea: “We have developed long range missiles with nuclear warheads. Death to the Americans!”

U.S.: “We have ten-thousand flying dragons that feel no pain and shoot lasers from their eyes. They are permanently circling your country looking for anything that leaves the ground. On the plus side, just point to your hibachi and we’ll light it for you from the sky. Oh, and our satellites are seeing an irregular mole on your back. You should see someone about that.”

In the long run, I expect we will develop a robot army, including drones, to create a virtual fence around ISIS-held territory. The robots would kill anything with a heat signature that came within a mile of the border. And the drones might be able to jam all communications in the area too. I would be amazed if the military is not working toward that containment strategy. The dragon part is a bit less likely.

But as someone said in the comments, waiting for ISIS to self-destruct is a good option too. As the movement succeeds, it attracts people who have slightly different views until the whole thing becomes like the American Congress that can’t get anything done. Good luck with that, ISIS.

Vivian Giang explains why men are better than women when it comes to the workplace. (Expect a twist.) I buy every part of her post, as it is based on studies and the obvious. But in an upcoming post I plan to have a link war to figure out how everything Vivian describes can be true at the same time other studies show no pay differential after you adjust for experience. I believe both assertions even though they are in direct conflict. What is up with that?

In other news, a company created a frickin’ car with 3D printers. What????

And a Berkeley-related start-up has an app that could alleviate a lot of poverty. How do you ignore that?

Justin Timberlake: Going Solo Was 'One Of The Best/Worst Things That I Have Ever Done'

In 2002, Justin Timberlake released the album Justified — his first solo project after touring the world and topping charts as a member of the boy band *NSYNC. During his appearance on “Oprah’s Master Class,” the multiple Grammy award-winning musician opened up about his decision to go solo at the height of the group’s popularity.

“I would wake up every morning feeling more and more of an urge to step out on my own,” Timberlake explains.

No one around him seemed to understand. “What are you doing?” he says they would ask. “Why wouldn’t you ride this out? You’re the biggest group in the world. Why would you walk away from this?”

Timberlake followed his instincts and took the risk. “It’s one of the best/worst things that I have ever done,” he says. “It was bittersweet. It was hard to say goodbye to that era, but I felt it changing. I felt music changing. And I felt myself changing.”

For Timberlake’s second solo album, FutureSex/LoveSounds, he took another risk: releasing “SexyBack” as the lead single, a song infused with distorted vocals, a pulsing beat and backing vocals from rapper Timbaland. It was a unique sound and Timberlake says he had to convince people that it was truly his song.

“People didn’t even think it was me,” he says. “They thought it was a joke.”

Timberlake believed so strongly in “SexyBack” that he refused to give up on it. “I had to call up a couple of radio programmers and say, ‘No, seriously, this is my song,'” he says.

He even sparred with the president of his record label. “I got in a full-on argument with the president of the label I was signed to at the time. ‘This song will never work,’ [he said],” Timberlake recalls. “I said, ‘Just put the song out.'”

As a compromise, Timberlake agreed to a contingency plan in case “SexyBack” flopped. “I agreed to shoot a video for the second single within two weeks of putting the song out so we’d have a second single ready to go if the song didn’t work,” he says.

“SexyBack” became Timberlake’s first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100, topped charts around the world and earned the artist a Grammy for Best Dance Recording.

“I believed in it. I believed in what it made other people do,” Timberlake says. “I only had my instinct, which is a powerful thing.”

Justin Timberlake’s appearance on “Oprah’s Master Class” reairs Sunday, May 25, at 10 p.m. ET on OWN.

More new “Mast Class” episodes return Sunday, June 1, at 10 p.m. ET on OWN.
