President Trump Earns the Highest Presidential Approval Level of All Time

The Small Business Optimism Index hit an all-time high. That’s the new Presidential Approval Poll.

In olden days (pre-2016), candidates for president were not so different from each other. I can remember pundits complaining endlessly about how similar the Democrats and Republicans had become. In that environment, you can easily imagine someone who voted for Candidate A warming up to Candidate B. In those simpler times, a presidential approval poll meant something.

Today, a “presidential approval poll” is little more than taking attendance. If you’re a Democrat, you disapprove of President Trump as a lifestyle choice. If you voted for Trump, you probably still approve of him because you knew exactly what you were getting. And if you are an anti-Trump conservative, you allow cognitive dissonance to rule your brain and you say he’s doing a good job but you disapprove of him anyway. David Brooks accidentally described this phenomenon in this article.

I contend that business optimism — and small business optimism in particular — are the new standard for presidential approval because “economics” captures most of what a president influences.

If a president starts a war, or threatens to start one, the economy flinches.

If a president starts a trade war, or threatens one, the economy flinches.

If a president is tearing apart the fabric of civilization in one way or another, the economy collapses.

If a big terror attack succeeds on the homeland, the economy flinches.

If immigration is allowed in large numbers, the economy feels it.

I could go on. The point is that all of the “big” issues directly influence the economy via their impact on our psychology and our resources. In a free, capitalist country, “the economy” captures all the goodness and badness of a presidency without really trying. And the measure that best reflects the future of the economy, in my opinion, is small business optimism.

Big businesses can do fine with a president who promotes policies that favor big corporations, even if the rest of the country is suffering. But when small business owners are feeling good about the economy, that means the president is doing a more bottoms-up job of getting things right. President Trump has focused on bottoms-up economics from the start, meaning jobs and lessened regulations. Apparently that is working.

I have been telling you for two years straight that psychology drives the economy, and that a Master Persuader such as President Trump can directly influence psychology and optimism. We see him doing that right before our eyes.

At the same time President Trump is “talking up” our economy, he’s talking North Korea’s economy to ruin. If you own a company that is involved in smuggling with North Korea, you probably noticed that South Korea nabbed two tankers that satellite photos spotted cheating. That’s going to be a financial disaster for those shipping companies. The psychology of the corporations involved in smuggling just changed, courtesy of the Master Persuader who has no intention of taking his boot off the North Korean economy until they lose their nukes. This approach is already causing North Korea to get flexible, at least in the talking sense.

Keep in mind that all of the personality negatives that are reflected in the old-timey presidential approval polls are exactly what is scaring North Korea into the arms of “good cop” South Korea. President Trump’s tweets didn’t cause a war; they caused North Korean flexibility, exactly as I predicted.

And if you are still worried about President Trump’s mental health, I’ll do a Periscope later today to tell you how badly the media has abused the public on that topic. For a preview, check out this interview that Dr. Drew did with Dr. Bandy Lee on her opinions of President Trump’s mental health. The media reported her as saying he was mentally unfit. That wasn’t the case. She has no professional opinion on the President’s mental capacity because she has never met him. Her primary concern is about societal violence as a result of his presidency. That is completely different from what has been reported all week. I nominate this story for the Fake News Awards. I think it can be a finalist.

News in Brief: Huckabee Earns Nickel For Presidential Campaign By Painting Old Widow’s Picket Fence

STAMPS, AR—Whistling “Hail To The Chief” as he flipped the coin into the air and caught it in his palm, Republican presidential candidate Mike Huckabee confirmed Friday that he had earned a nickel for his campaign by painting an elderly widow’s picket fence. “Hoo golly, when Ol’ Widow Parker said she’d pay me to whitewash her fence, I was nearabout gladder than a possum in a punkin patch,” said a smiling Huckabee, kissing the nickel before dropping it into an empty mayonnaise jar with the letters “PAC” scrawled on the side. “Widow Parker always tried to do right by me, tanned my hide a mess of times when I started raisin’ Cain, but she done civilized me. So faster than all get-out, I changed from my Sunday-go-t’meetin’ clothes, fetched my brush and pail, and painted that fence top to bottom, lickety-split.” Huckabee later confirmed that, on …

Anderson Cooper Earns High Marks As Democratic Debate Moderator

Depending on who you ask, the big winner in Tuesday night’s Democratic showdown was either Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders, both or racial equality (for finally being discussed in a 2016 debate). One result was widely accepted though: CNN’s Anderson Cooper absolutely crushed it as a moderator.

“Anderson Cooper won the debate,” wrote Red State’s Erick Erickson.

“He asserted himself as the strongest figure of the presentation, candidates included,” wrote Mediaite’s Joe Concha. ”In the end, Cooper showed why he’s one of the top journalists in the game: He was impeccably prepared, wasn’t hesitant to ask follow-up questions when warranted and didn’t offer up one question – not one — that could be considered frivolous or fluffy… A solid A.”

Cooper hammered each candidate with questions about their biggest weak spots. He asked former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and former Rhode Island Sen. Lincoln Chafee about their wavering political stances. He grilled Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders and Virginia Sen. Jim Webb for their high marks with the NRA. He questioned former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley’s record as mayor of Baltimore, a city plagued by recent unrest. And he asked all of the candidates about their electability, putting the three Democrats who are polling in the single digits in a tough spot.

Cooper repeatedly refused to let candidates dodge questions or give non-answers:

“Senator Sanders, you have to give a response,” he said.

“Senator Sanders, you didn’t answer the question,” he said later.

“You agreed to these rules and you’re wasting time,” he told Webb. “So if you would finish your answer, we’ll move on.”

Cooper’s performance was well-received on Twitter:

As Slate’s Justin Peters wrote, “I wish he could moderate all the debates.”

Cookie’s Empire: Taraji P. Henson Earns Outstanding Lead Actress Emmy Nomination

Taraji P. Henson snagged herself an Emmy nomination this morning (July 14) for her role as Cookie Lyon on Empire. Henson is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.

The 44-year-old Washington D.C. native’s Emmy competition is pretty serious with Viola Davis (How To Get Away With Murder), Claire Daines (Homeland), Elizabeth Moss (Mad Men), Robin Wright (House of Cards), and Tatania Maslany (Orphan Black).

This one could go either way, but Henson seems to be the front runner just based on Empire’s success, what her character means to the show, and how big it is on social media.

Other nominees include Anthony Anderson, Bey & Jay, Don Cheadle, Queen Latifah,  Louis C.K., David Oyelowo, Amy Schumer, and more.

The 67th Annual Emmy Awards air Sept. 20 on Fox,  and will be hosted by Saturday Night Live alum, Andy Sanmberg.

Black College Student Earns Coon Points By Defending Confederate Flag

Black University of South Carolina student Byron Thomas has become somewhat known for his passionate defense of the Confederate Flag and its use as the flag within the state. Thomas doesn’t think the flag represents the state’s well-documented racist past and doesn’t want to see it removed despite recent developments.

Thomas, who has been making YouTube videos for years about the Confederate Flag and his supporting views, was a guest on CNN and spoke with host Hal Gorani. Gorani challenged Thomas stances, making certain to mention not only the flag’s ties to slavery but the fact alleged Mother Emanuel AME Church shooter Dylann Roof displayed the flag on his website.

Thomas, who hangs the flag in his home, explained that his support comes by way of an ancestor who fought in the Confederate Army and that the Confederacy actually awarded its Black soldiers pensions after the war in its losing effort.

While that certainly seems noble, someone needs to let young Thomas know that long after the Union Army defeated the Southern forces, many there didn’t want to do away with the practice of slavery. Then the divisive Jim Crow segregation laws came forth and upended any hope of true racial harmony.

Somewhere, we believe Thomas has a point buried under his well-stated but somehow majorly-flawed reasoning. From this standpoint, it looks like Thomas is blind to history and facts.

Iraq War Veteran Noah Galloway Earns Standing Ovation On ‘Dancing With The Stars’

During his second deployment to Iraq in 2005, Noah Galloway almost lost his life to a roadside bomb. Six days after the explosion, Galloway woke up at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland. He had survived, but he’d lost his left arm and his left leg.

A decade later, Galloway is making waves as a competitor on ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars.” In the latest episode of the competition, which aired Monday, the veteran shared his inspiring story — and wowed the audience with a stellar performance.

(Watch Galloway’s segment in the video above. Tissues are strongly recommended.)

As Galloway explained on the show, his journey to the “DWTS” stage has been a tumultuous one. Following the explosion, he fell into a state of despair.

“I would sit at home by myself and drink,” he said.

It took time for Galloway to heal emotionally, but eventually, he learned to accept his injury and started living a healthier life.

“I really looked in the mirror and quit looking at what I was missing and paid more attention to what I still had left,” Galloway said. “I realized I had to make a change and it had to happen fast.”

This week on “DWTS,” Galloway and his partner, Sharna Burgess, impressed the judges and the audience with an athletic contemporary dance performance.

Judge Julianne Hough held back tears as she offered her feedback to the duo.

“You astonish us every single week,” Hough told Galloway.

Len Goodman, another one of the judges, added, as he got to his feet: “You are an inspiration, and I think everyone here should stand up and applaud you.”

Those gathered in the studio gladly obliged as they loudly whooped and cheered for him.

“It’s like I had to be injured,” said Galloway as he reflected on his journey. “I had to go through that dark time to get where I am today.”
