Michael Sam — Hangin’ With ‘Empire’ Stars … New Friendship With Jussie Smollet
Being unemployed has its benefits … if you’re Michael Sam … ’cause the outta-work football player has some new friends in high places … hanging with the cast of the hit Fox show “Empire.”
Donnie McClurkin Reacts To Empire Shade, Calls It Bullying
Donnie McClurkin, though doth protest too much. The three time Grammy Award winner infamous for going from gay to straight issued a press statement in reaction to his name being dropped on last night’s premiere episode of season two of Empire.
On the show, Miss Lawrence of Real Housewives of Atlanta and Fashion Queens fame, and a flamboyant gay man, name checked McClurkin.
Due to McClurkin’s aforementioned history, and the context of the scene—Lawrence auditioning for Empire Records by serenading Jamal and imploring him to perform with him at a gay award show—many took it as shade. McClurkin got word and issued a press statement, and also referred to the scene as a “new form of bullying.”
“It was brought to my attention via social media that my name was included in a “back-handed” manner during a scene in the FOX show, Empire. What might have been meant for evil, God uses for good! Despite the scripting used by @leedanielsent it has helped bring attention to the gospel of Jesus Christ that I sing and preach, an empowering moment! To my brothers and sisters, thank you for your support, encouragement & love! No negativity towards @leedanielsent let’s show the love of Jesus,” says McClurkin.
“Let this experience be a reminder that as loving Christians we’re called to share the good news of Christ and be examples of God’s love on the earth.”
Clearly, Lee Daniels (or whoever wrote the scene) was trolling because he could have used a plethora of names other than McClurkin’s. Clearly, it worked because he got a reaction.
Watch the scene in question on the flip.

Empire Being Sued For $500 Million
Terrence Howard has a host of real-life problems but his place of business has attracted yet another lawsuit.
The premise isn’t as elaborate or sensational as one of the hit show Empire’s subplots. It’s just another guy claiming Empire stole his life story/idea.
Reports TMZ:
Imagine “Empire” with Shaft in the lead role … that was the vision one guy had, but it never got made … and now he believes the creators of the show owe him $ 500 million for stealing his idea.
A guy named Jon Astor-White is suing EPs Danny Strong and Lee Daniels — as well as Imagine Entertainment and 21st Century Fox — claiming he shopped around a show called “King Solomon” back in 2007 … which bears a lot of similarities to “Empire.”
Astor-White claims his show would have starred Richard Roundtree (Shaft said no thanks) and was about a record executive and his family and their battle over control of the company.
Astor-White said he faxed the treatment around, and included a proposed cast list which was aspirational, to say the least. In addition to Roundtree, Astor-White wanted Diahann Carroll, Alicia Keys, Kanye West, John Goodman, George Hamilton and Angie Dickinson.
Astor-White describes his show as “the style and elegance of ‘Dynasty’ meets ‘The Sopranos’ with a sprinkling of ‘The Godfather.’” That’s a similar comparison Marvin Gaye III made in his claim.
The show has also been sued by a guy with Jackson family connections and by a woman who claims she is the real Cookie.
Astor-White is seeking the half a billion dollars … plus additional damages.
The struggle will likely continue down the line. Empire’s second season starts on September 23.

Cookie’s Empire: Taraji P. Henson Earns Outstanding Lead Actress Emmy Nomination
Taraji P. Henson snagged herself an Emmy nomination this morning (July 14) for her role as Cookie Lyon on Empire. Henson is nominated for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series.
The 44-year-old Washington D.C. native’s Emmy competition is pretty serious with Viola Davis (How To Get Away With Murder), Claire Daines (Homeland), Elizabeth Moss (Mad Men), Robin Wright (House of Cards), and Tatania Maslany (Orphan Black).
This one could go either way, but Henson seems to be the front runner just based on Empire’s success, what her character means to the show, and how big it is on social media.
Other nominees include Anthony Anderson, Bey & Jay, Don Cheadle, Queen Latifah, Louis C.K., David Oyelowo, Amy Schumer, and more.
The 67th Annual Emmy Awards air Sept. 20 on Fox, and will be hosted by Saturday Night Live alum, Andy Sanmberg.

Lee Daniels On “Empire” Emmy Snubs: “F*ck These Motherf*ckers” (VIDEO)
(AllHipHop News) The Emmy nominations came out yesterday (July 16). Fox’s megasmash Empire earned three nominations, but only one in the major acting categories (Taraji P. Henson – Best Actress In A Drama Series). What was even more surprising is that the show was locked out of the “Outstanding Drama Series” category.

Co-creator Lee Daniels addressed the snubs in a video posted to Instagram. Daniels was joined by Empire star Jussie Smollett. The 32-year-old singer actor asked his boss to “be nice,” but Daniels still took a sarcastic shot at the Emmys.
“Fuck these motherfuckers,” Daniels says to the camera. The producer-director returned to IG to make it clear the comments were all in fun, and he suggested the “haters shut up and go to bed.”
Empire was a ratings behemoth. The numbers of viewers rose every week during the series’ first season. The finale drew in the largest ratings for a new series since 2005.

‘Empire’ Sued — You Stole My Life Story!!!
A friend of the Jackson family is suing Terrence Howard, Lee Daniels, “Empire” and others, claiming the hit show is a carbon copy of his film about his life as a “gangster, pimp and drug dealer.” Ron Newt, who describes himself as a “known ghetto…
Was Malik Yoba Killed Off “Empire” For Gay Outing?
There were rumors that Malik Yoba was deaded on “Empire” because he said that his gay co-star was very active in the gay community. He also unwittingly revealed that the dude Jussie Smollett, who plays Jamal on the show, was gay in real life. Now, Malik backtracked on this, but the damage was done. The word on the street was that Lee Daniel, who is the co-creator, of the show, was pissed at the “outing.” And POOF….Malik was gone from the show, despite being a major player. It was speculated that he was written out of the how for the error.
Malik took the time to dismiss the rumors and then some with Jet Magazine. ((Streets still talking though.))
JET: What is most disheartening aspect of the situation and how have you been able to deal with it?
Malik Yoba:The saddest part is that the same publications and radio stations that will ask you to interview to promote something you’re doing…they never called, never reached out to me to see if any of it is true, but people want to promote it for quick views and likes. The people who will smile in your face, call you their brother and say they support you are the same one’s who will go and promote these untruths. I pray for them all.And so it’s just a sad commentary on the world we live in right now. In over two decades in this business or at any time before I’ve never ever had this type of negativity spoken or written about me. And it’s unfortunate because I have children. I take care of a family through what I do. And unfortunately, people have no regards for that. I’ve chosen to stay in my lane. I know what I’m about. I know what God I serve. I know why I’m here. A wise man said to me years ago – using a football analogy: “They can only hit you if you’re carrying the ball.” And clearly, I have a mission and I’ve been true to that mission for over 30 years and a history and legacy of service –that’s how I’m dealing with it.
It is real out there.

Via TMZ:
Empire stars Andre Lyon and Anika Calhoun are family on-screen … but off-screen the actors may be hooking up.
Check out this video of Trai Byers, who plays Andre, and Grace Gealey, the now-famous Boo Boo Kitty. They went to a wedding together and people who went to the reception tell us they were super affectionate at times, but still conscious people were looking.
The bride and groom — Lauren Whitney Johnson and Cedric Sanders — are both actors, but nowhere near as famous as Lucious’ oldest son and ex-fiancée.
Andre needs someone new. His wife’s a killer.

‘Empire’ — Legal Dogfight Over Show Name
FOX claims there’s nothing special about the word “Empire,” and the network has now filed a lawsuit trying to torpedo a demand by a record label laying claim to the name. The label is called Empire Distribution — they do distribution and…
FOX’s Empire & Empire Distribution Involved In Ugly Legal Battle
It can’t be stressed enough how FOX’s Empire series catapulted to the front of the pack, exceeding all expectations and projections.
Which, has left a bad taste in the mouths of Empire Distribution, one of the most trustworthy music distribution services ever created. Ironically, Empire Distribution specializes in the realm of Hip-Hop and R&B, and have been responsible for servicing your favorite websites (Hip-Hop Wired included) and blogs with music from the likes of Kendrick Lamar, Freddie Gibbs, Too $ hort, Snoop Dogg–you name it.
Yesterday, March 23, Twentieth Century Fox Television filed a federal lawsuit after the five-year-old Empire Distribution began to lay claim to the name.
In a press release sent to Hip-Hop Wired, Empire Distribution CEO Ghazi Shami explained, “FOX’s Empire television program has created significant confusion with EMPIRE’s products and services. Customers, artists and business partners have all expressed confusion to my employees, artists, and me as to whether the Empire program has any affiliation or business relationship with EMPIRE. It does not.”
Shami continued, “Fox, through the Empire program, advertises, distributes, and streams music and sells downloads under the ‘Empire’ mark. This music shares the same search terms as EMPIRE’s music, the musical genres are identical, and the songs and albums are positioned in close proximity in online outlets such as iTunes, Google Play, Amazon.com, and Spotify. It isn’t just a fictional show; they are functioning as a record label in the real world,” said Shami. “This only makes the public confusion worse.”
Michael Hobbs, a partner with Troutman Sanders LLP, is representing Empire Distribution in the case and alleges that they reached out to FOX several times to solve the matter but were spurned at the mere thought. “The only alternative with which we are left is to litigate, which we will do vigorously to protect our client’s valuable rights,” Hobbs said.
According to TMZ, FOX’s said lawsuit is asking a judge to shoot Empire Distribution’s demand of $ 5 million if the show uses Empire Distribution’s artists as regulars or $ 8 million outright.
This is even uglier than Vernon Turner’s exit.

‘Empire’ Is Showing Us A New Way To Think About Black TV Characters
The Fox drama “Empire” reigned supreme Wednesday evening, capping off its breakout first season with a two-hour finale whose latter half drew 17.6 million viewers, according to Associated Press reports. That’s about an 18 percent jump from the show’s March 11 episode, which 14.9 million people watched. It’s also the greatest number of people to watch the first-season finale of a TV drama since “Grey’s Anatomy” in 2005.
Since its Jan. 7 debut, “Empire” has stirred up numerous conversations about show creators Lee Daniels and Danny Strong, and the ways in which they’ve addressed various topics — some of them drawn from Daniels’ own traumatic early life — that often go unmentioned on black television.
“’Empire’ is resisting the impulse to present the typical one-dimensional, stereotypical characters we have seen in the past around representations of African Americans,” said Robin R. Means Coleman, an author and communications professor at the University of Michigan, told The Huffington Post.
“While some have noted that its attention to ALS and being bipolar is oversimplified, and that the ‘homophobia-in-the-Black-community’ narrative is a bit clichéd, that fact of the matter is that ‘Empire’ is a series that is ‘going there,’ on these important issues,” Coleman continued. “More, these discussions reside right alongside other topics that have not typically been seen in a Black series, such as IPOs.”
Even as ratings have soared over the course of the season’s 12 episodes, critics have debated “Empire’s” authenticity and its portrayal of African-Americans. Others have questioned whether the show is glorifying certain stereotypes that are often associated with inner-city black communities.
During a recent appearance on “Access Hollywood,” Terrence Howard, who plays “Empire” patriarch Lucious Lyon, mentioned that he’d like to hear the show’s characters use the n-word in the second season. Though the n-word is almost never heard on television today, it was heard on many popular black TV shows of earlier eras, including “Sanford and Son” and “The Jeffersons.”
“I believe if we’re gonna really tackle racism, if we’re gonna tackle bigotry, if we’re gonna tackle homophobia, we need to attack it dead on,” Howard said on “Access Hollywood.” “You don’t just sit up, you know, ‘let’s give a little aspirin right here.’ No, we need to take the sutures, open up the problem and reach in and grab it.”
“And since [the n-word] is used in almost every conversation in most black neighborhoods, why is it that we don’t hear it on TV anymore?” he continued. “Are white people afraid of it? Did they create the word? But if this is something that we use on a daily basis, then let’s address what it really means.”
Should a popular a sitcom such as “Empire” incorporate the usage of the n-word in an effort to combat racism and maintain authenticity within the black community? According to a highly unscientific poll of HuffPost readers, the answer is no by a margin of almost 3 to 1.
“We are supposed to be in such progressive times as a nation and a culture, why do we have to retread to something that represents such a heinous part of our history,” the entertainment journalist Karu F. Daniels told HuffPost in an email.
“Why does a fictitious prime time soap opera have to be ‘that authentic’?” Daniels went on. “I think enough slurs have been used. They don’t need any more. It’s not a reality show. And it’s not cable. We are talking about a primetime soap opera right? There are black people on ‘The Young & The Restless’ and ‘The Bold & The Beautiful’ — some from humble backgrounds — they don’t use the n-word.”
Besides “Empire’s” eagerness to tackle explosive topics, another key part of the show’s success has been Taraji P. Henson, who plays Lucious’s ex-wife, Cookie. Henson has gained a cult following for her work on “Empire,” which continues in the lineage of Shonda Rhimes’ force-of-nature black leading ladies on “Scandal” and “How To Get Away With Murder.” In fact, Strong recently entertained the idea of having “Scandal’s” Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) show up on a future episode of “Empire.”
“I think television viewing audiences are seeing a surge in strong black female lead characters that haven’t been seen for years on primetime television dramas. And that’s a good thing,” Daniels told HuffPost. “Shows such as ‘Scandal’ and ‘Empire’ and even ‘Tyler Perry Presents The Haves And The Have Nots’ are infectious, over-the-top soap operas that an underserved and virtually ignored demographic gravitate towards because they walk in the door knowing that it’s fictitious entertainment as opposed to the over-produced, scripted schlock that reality TV has become.”
“Cookie represents a hood-rat with a heart of gold who made many sacrifices to do what she thinks is right,” Daniels continued. “She’s not perfect and polished and doesn’t try to be. But she, surprisingly, can be the moral center of the show.”
“Olivia is more aspirational to some. She has the pedigree and all of the sophistication we haven’t seen in primetime television since Diahann Carroll was on ‘Dynasty’ 30 years ago,” he added. “But she is flawed when it comes to matters of the heart, having an affair with a married man. And because of those types of imperfections, it humanizes her in a way that is relatable to many.”

Bow Wow Says Empire Stereotypes Black Actors, Prefers CSI [Photos]
By now, everyone is well aware that Bow Wow is an accomplished actor. The man who cut his teeth on cinematic flicks such as Roll Bounce, Like Mike, Lottery Ticket, and Madea’s Big Happy Family wouldn’t take a job on Empire because it stereotypes Black actors.
He broke it down in an interview about racial diversity as it relates to his role on the CSI spinoff, CSI: Cyber.
“When we were still filming Cyber episodes, Empire‘s first episode premiered. Fans were saying, ‘Man, you should have been on the show.’ But we all don’t rap or play basketball,” he said. “We can do so many things. There are young African-Americans who are intelligent enough to work at the FBI. That’s what’s so bright. Hopefully, I can help start a new wave of young black actors who don’t want to stereotype themselves.”
Twitter was quick to remind Bow of the following: He’s not up for a role on Empire.

Christian Combs Says Him & His Brothers Are The Real Empire?
Photo Via Christian’s Instagram
Cryptic or Nah? Remember there recently was a rumor going around that Diddy was allegedly suing Empire because it somehow was based on his life. The rumor sparked a lot of interesting questions like did Puffy kill BIG, was Bad Boy funded by drug money, and which one of Diddy’s sons would be gay. Just a lot of laughs really. Well recently Christian Combs, Diddy’s youngest son, took to his Instagram to post a picture of him and his brothers with the caption “Empire”. This brought out some funny comments such as “So Quincy is crazy, Justin is gay, and you the rapper.” At least these guys are living the real “Empire” Life though. What are your thoughts?

SNL & Chris Hemsworth Spoof Empire [VIDEO]
Saturday Night Live tackled the inevitable Empire spoof and managed to make it entertaining by hovering in on the one character the hit show obviously lacks.
A stereotypical “white guy.”
Host Chris Hemsworth showed he was more than just a thunder god and tapped into his biological melanin by portraying “Chip,” the new office manager for the drama-filled record label. Over the course of the two-minute plus skit, Chip is pitted in scenarios such as being tasked to get everyone to sign an office birthday card when it’s obvious everyone’s interests lie elsewhere.
Keenan Thompson donned Lucious Lyon’s impeccable perm and Sasheer Zamata had Cookie’s over-the-top persona down pat, but it was future Ghostbusters star Leslie Jones who nailed Cookie’s assistant, Porsha down because…well…RNS.

How Fox Hopes to Build an Empire Via Radio Airplay and Music Fans
Empire, Fox's upcoming hip-hop soap opera, is aiming to win over radio programmers and music fans when it premieres on Jan. 7 . Unlike the network's Glee, Fox's last big scripted musical, Empire will feature almost all original songs instead of covers."That presents a whole lot of new challenges," says Geoff Bywater, senior vice president of music at 20th Century Fox TV, which produces the show. Unfamiliar tracks can be a tough sell for audiences, says Bywater, but "one thing we really did learn on Glee, as much as we tried, is that trying to get a cover single is difficult. Original music will lend a stronger, credible voice to Empire." (The covers from The Voice and American Idol contestants don't get radio play either.)Veteran record producer Timbaland and his team (including Raphael Saadiq) are overseeing the music on the drama… Read More > Other Links From TVGuide.com Courtney Love Terrence Howard Jussie Smollett Ilene Chaiken Raphael Saadiq Timbaland Empire Bryshere Y.
