‘Power’ Recap – Season 5, Episode 3: Are We On The Same Team?

Power Episode 503

Source: Starz / Starz

We’re only at episode 3, but Season 5 of Power is already looking like a wild ride.

BlANCAS INVESTIGATION AND ANGELA’S JIMENEZ CONNECTION

Officer Blanca Rodriguez continues to put the pressure on Angela as she discovers more connections between Ray Ray and Raina’s murders. Her investigation brings her to a Detective Leary who reveals Tariq’s inconsistent account of what happened that night. Everywhere Blanca turns, Angela is involved. Angela knows it’s only a matter of time before Blanca discovers the truth, so after meeting with Tasha to devise a game plan, she figures out a temporary solution. Angela sends Donovan to transfer all information regarding Raymond Jones to federal custody and away from Blanca’s jurisdiction. If Blanca wants to solve this case and discover Angela’s true motives, she’ll have to go about it another way.

Meanwhile, Angela has a major breakthrough in the Jimenez investigation. She discovers that Alicia Jimenez isn’t Diego’s lover, but his sister and the other command of the Jimenez cartel. She also has a new love interest in Steve Tampio from D.C. Angela hasn’t faired well with work romance before so I expect this to go extremely well…

DRE AND DIEGO CREATE A NEW ORG CHART

Dre holds a meeting with the organization to officially install Arturo as the new Toros Locos leader. Diego is there to witness the meeting and questions whether Lorenzo’s supporters will acknowledge this new regime. Arturo invites Diego to see how discipline is applied to the group. Dre cautions against it but Diego isn’t hearing it. The Jimenez don’t really give two f*cks about law enforcement, tact, or anything else. 2-Bit and Spanky are tight because Dre allowed Arturo to take the credit for the Lorenzo hit.

Diego watches as Arturo kills the traitors in the Toros Locos but continues to wonder how Arturo knew about Lorenzo’s coup. Diego then tells Dre he’s making Cristobal number two in order to keep the Toros in check. Diego also delivers Dre an ominous message to stay away from his sister or else. Wandering eyes will be cut out and fed to whoever crosses the boss!

POLITICS AS USUAL BETWEEN TATE AND GHOST

Councilman Tate and Ghost move into the next phase of the Queens project, as they woo potential investors. Linda (played by Garcelle Beauvais) seems unimpressed with their project and the competing visions between Ghost and Tate. Ghost decides to take the initiative and meet with Linda to persuade her to reconsider investing. With a little wine, and a lot of sex, Ghost seems to have the advantage…until he reconvenes with Tate to hear the harsh truth.

Tate reveals Linda’s advances were a test of Ghosts’s professionalism, and he failed. Tate isn’t going to be Ghost’s pimp, but Ghost berates the Councilman for exploiting his family through ambush press conferences and photo ops at funerals. They decide to calm hostilities between one another and handle business however they need to in order for the Center to be built.

‘Power’ Recap – Season 5, Episode 2: Damage Control

Power Season 5 Episode 2

Source: Starz / Starz

On the latest episode of Power, the St. Patrick Family hasn’t properly grieved Raina. Over the course of 3 weeks, the family dealt with death, revenge, and the need for damage control.

They hope to alleviate the impact of Raina’s murder, but those unaddressed feelings finally erupted. Tasha mourns Raina daily with an abundance of tears and regret, while Ghost silently suffers (and attempts to call Angela for comfort). Tasha needs an outlet to channel her grief, but Ghost is apprehensive and doesn’t want to invite others into his business. During the counseling session with other grieving parents, Ghost discourages Tasha from sharing their experiences, causing a rift between the two. Even more tension is generated when Councilman Tate ambushes the St. Patricks with a press conference to speak about Raina and his community endeavors.

Tommy’s piss poor management skills reared its ugly head in multiple ways this episode. Jason Mitic returns to demand Tommy replace the product lost when the Jiminez burned down the warehouse and hijacked drugs from the now lost NYC port. Mitic drafts Ghost and Kanan as complicit partners to recoup his lost drugs. Tommy also has to answer for the Italian hitters being killed by Dre. Tommy decides to be as forthcoming with Vincent and to ask forgiveness, claiming that he took care of the uber. Sammy, Teresi’s right hand man, lied on Tommy’s behalf and punched him in the grill to say “I’ll never lie to them about you again.” Tommy continues to paint himself into impossible corners with brute force techniques to feel more exclusive.

Amara Strikes Back: 8 Outrageous Moments From Episode 5 of ‘Love & Hip-Hop Miami’

VH1's Hip Hop Honors: The 90's Game Changers - Arrivals

Source: Greg Doherty / Getty

Love and Hip-Hop Miami’s drama is picking up and we get a sense of that immediately as episode 5 starts. We pick right up where last week left off with Shay and Liz confronting Prince and his “friend” Gabriel at the launch of his fashion line.

Things get heated quickly when Shay and Liz ceremoniously throw beverages at Gabrielle and Chinese Kitty. Security quickly comes in and removes Shay and Liz from the room but Chinese Nicky literally snatches  Shay’s wig.

Twitters breakdown of the mini rumble primarily focused on Chinese Nicky’s face and the wig snatching.

Once Shay things calmed down a bit Prince goes to confront Liz and find out why she and her “ratchet ass friend” was there in the first place. He surprised to see that his nemesis Michelle Pooch is there. Prince is still clueless that his ex and his rival are actually best friends in real life while trying to talk to Liz, Pooch comes and remove Liz from the situation.

A Quest of Heroes: The Graphic Novel (Episode #1)

Morgan Rice

Genre: Graphic Novels

Publish Date: May 21, 2015

Publisher: Morgan Rice

Seller: Lukeman Literary Management

“THE SORCERER’S RING has all the ingredients for an instant success: plots, counterplots, mystery, valiant knights, and blossoming relationships replete with broken hearts, deception and betrayal. It will keep you entertained for hours, and will satisfy all ages. Recommended for the permanent library of all fantasy readers.”  –Books and Movie Reviews, Roberto Mattos  Here is episode #1 in the graphic novel adaptation of the #1 Bestselling epic fantasy novel A QUEST OF HEROES, with over 900 five star reviews!  From #1 Bestselling author Morgan Rice comes the debut of a dazzling new fantasy series. A QUEST OF HEROES (BOOK #1 IN THE SORCERER’S RING) revolves around the epic coming of age story of one special boy, a 14 year old from a small village on the outskirts of the Kingdom of the Ring. The youngest of four, the least favorite of his father, hated by his brothers, Thorgrin senses he is different from the others. He dreams of becoming a great warrior, of joining the King’s men and protecting the Ring from the hordes of creatures on the other side of the Canyon. When he comes of age and is forbidden by his father to try out for the King’s Legion, he refuses to take no for an answer: he journeys out on his own, determined to force his way into King’s Court and be taken seriously.  But King’s Court is rife with its own family dramas, power struggles, ambitions, jealousy, violence and betrayal. King MacGil must choose an heir from amongst his children, and the ancient Dynasty Sword, the source of all their power, still sits untouched, waiting for the chosen one to arrive. Thorgrin arrives as an outsider and battles to be accepted, and to join the King’s Legion.  Thorgrin comes to learn he has mysterious powers he does not understand, that he has a special gift, and a special destiny. Against all odds he falls in love with the king’s daughter, and as their forbidden relationship blossoms, he discovers he has powerful rivals. As he struggles to make sense of his powers, the king’s sorcerer takes him under his wing and tells him of a mother he never knew, in a land far away, beyond the Canyon, beyond even the land of the Dragons.  Before Thorgrin can venture out and become the warrior he yearns to be, he must complete his training. But this may be cut short, as he finds himself propelled into the center of royal plots and counterplots, ones that may threaten his love and bring him down—and the entire kingdom with him.  With its sophisticated world-building and characterization, A QUEST OF HEROES is an epic tale of friends and lovers, of rivals and suitors, of knights and dragons, of intrigues and political machinations, of coming of age, of broken hearts, of deception, ambition and betrayal. It is a tale of honor and courage, of fate and destiny, of sorcery. It is a fantasy that brings us into a world we will never forget, and which will appeal to all ages and genders. “[An] entertaining epic fantasy.”  —Kirkus Reviews  “The beginnings of something remarkable are there.”  –San Francisco Book Review  “A spirited fantasy ….Only the beginning of what promises to be an epic young adult series.”  –Midwest Book Review

Publisher: Emerald Inkwell

Seller: Smashwords

For a Ghost-Free Time, Call is an episodic supernatural adventure set in the emerald city of Eugene, Oregon which follows a young man, who–since he was a boy–has had the irritating ability to see ghosts all around him. In spite of this so-called “gift,” he found a way to cope and a few less than legitimate ways to make a little money on the side. But a con that started out as a way to make a quick buck will soon become a terrifying reality check about the world he thought he understood… “Eugene is teeming with ghosts and for some stupid, God damn reason, I’m the only one who can see them.” At the young age of nine, Jared developed the unnatural ability to see the lingering spirits of the dead, and beyond its initial novelty, all it’s ever done is piss him off. After having to grow up rather quickly on his own, Jared took something that would have easily driven most people insane and found a way to use his unwelcomed gift to his advantage. He studied and took notes from the most prevalent movies and television shows, and armed with every mainstream supernatural trope and cliché he could find, started his very own—more or less legitimate—ghost removal service. With years of hit-or-miss cons and a number of temporary solutions to combat the most crippling aspects of his “gift,” Jared finally found a way to live a “normal” life and a way to fit in with society. However, one day, while working a routine job for a rich mark, Jared will be confronted with his own lies and a glimpse of the truth behind the world around him and his abilities. For a Ghost-Free Time, Call is a supernatural thriller written by up and coming Pacific Northwest author Sean Kelly (author of "The Drive Home: A Tale of Bromance and Horror" and co-founder of Emerald Inkwell, A Pacific Northwest Publishing Community) and is the first story in an episodic series brought to you by Emerald Inkwell. Episode one is a FREE and complete short story setting the stage for an otherworldly series taking place all across Eugene, Oregon. Every city has their supernatural annoyances, but that doesn't mean you have to put up with them. Instead, for a ghost free time, just call.

‘South Park’ To Take On Police Violence In New Episode

The national debate on police violence has spread from Ferguson and Baltimore all the way to the small town of South Park, Colorado.

On this Wednesday’s episode of long-running animated series “South Park,” the town’s residents decide to abolish the police because they’re fed up with people who “impose their authority on the underprivileged.” Given the Comedy Central show’s history of iconoclasm, and its focus in Season 19 on political correctness, we’re gonna go ahead and guess that it doesn’t end well.

Here’s a clip from the episode, in which one of the town’s police officers defends his kind, saying that “not all cops are racist, trigger-happy assholes.”

“South Park,” which was created by college friends Trey Stone and Matt Parker, has a long and storied history of tackling controversial topics. Many of its most inflammatory episodes have focused on religious figures like Muhammad to the Virgin Mary.

Everything Is Papier-Mâché On ‘True Detective’ Episode 2

The season premiere of “True Detective” proved divisive last week, but entertainment editors Erin Whitney and Matthew Jacobs are sticking to their promise to discuss the show every Sunday. This week’s episode dove slightly deeper into the mystery of Ben Caspare’s death. The city manager’s grizzly autopsy report prompted Ray (Colin Farrell) and Ani (Rachel McAdams) to question whether a penchant for prostitutes led to his demise. Meanwhile, we got an unsettling look at Paul’s (Taylor Kitsch) family life, more of the series’ noirish driving scenes, Frank (Vince Vaughn) worrying about his riches and a cliffhanger that could (rightfully) take the show in a whole other direction. Let’s discuss.

Spoiler alert for “True Detective” Season 2, Episode 2, “Night Finds You.”

Matthew Jacobs: Hi, Erin! We were pretty cruel toward last week’s premiere, and the comments on our review seem to indicate a good number of people agreed with us. Then again, we were graced with a slew of ad hominem attacks on Twitter and via email, so clearly some of you took the episode as seriously as it took itself. Sadly, I don’t think I’ll be able to please the latter crop, so prep your aggression now, gracious readers.

I will say that Episode 2 was marginally better than the first. But hold on while I nod off as Frank moans about his self-made wealth (“Everything is papier-mâché” is an actual line uttered — twice) and while Ray, Ani and Paul exchange vacant side glares as they examine Ben Caspere’s body. On the other side lies the season’s first intriguing scene: Paul’s mother stroking his back and using what I assume is some sort of creepy euphemism when she tells him twice that he can have his “old room” if he spends the night. What is happening there? Give me more of that — it actually feels like there is a character with layers on the screen and not hollow bodies who shepherd the vague plot from one phase to the next.

taylor kitsch

Erin Whitney: Before I jump into this and thus throw myself into the gladiator pit against “True Detective” defenders, let me at least say that I’m not simply comparing this week’s new episode to Season 1. I will reference the initial season, though, because it’s difficult not to mourn something great in the midst of watching the melodramatic scenes from this week’s episode.

That opening sequence where Frank recalls his childhood with his drunk father is painful to watch, but in the wrong way. What should play as a poignant emotional moment is instead drenched in cheap desperation. Way longer than necessary, the scene feels like it’s ripped straight out of an actor’s guidebook to auditioning: the hardened criminal shows his vulnerability by recounting memories of his abusive daddy locking him in the basement. Pizzolatto has somehow lost all sense of subtlety in his writing to the point that I can’t help but wonder if he’s playing a joke on us.

Jump ahead to the car scenes between Ray and Ani and the group meeting between all three detectives. Each of these plays like a parody of Season 1 and, in general, much of quality television. Their conversations seem superfluous, or at least insignificant to the plot at hand. They don’t reveal any distinct or deeper qualities about the characters. Part of me thinks Pizzolatto has completely flipped his writing style to subvert our expectations of what TV should be, which is what Matt Johnston claimed in his Business Insider review. Even so, that’s not remotely engaging or serving any storytelling or symbolic purpose (at least not yet). I pray my mind will be changed by the end of the season — I desperately want to be in awe of this show. But so far, I’m simply not convinced.

Matt: I can’t say I buy that there is that much self-awareness at play, but I’ve seen others make arguments about its meta relationship to prestige programming, too. The show doesn’t seem to realize what it’s lacking, which is a sense of identity within the world it depicts. Every location featured is a grubby, nondescript part of this fictional LA-adjacent town, and without color from local denizens drifting through the background, it is rendered culture-less. That’s why I griped about the freeway shots last week — they reflect the web of plots the show has weaved, but do little to immerse us in what makes this town tick and why Caspere’s disappearance is worth eight talky hours of television. The same goes for the car scenes, where Ray and Ani carry on meaningless conversations that don’t unearth much about their worldviews or the communities they defend. And that green screen? HBO, please tell me the screeners you provided to press still needed color-correction work, because damn. If we thought the aerial shots do nothing for the season’s world-building, just look at the streets these characters drive down.

I thought the scene with Paul’s mother accomplished what most of the others did not in hinting at a mysterious backstory that we actually want to take the time to understand. I criticized his suicidal bender last week, but could Paul actually be the season’s best character? Not that he has much competition: I still don’t understand much about Ani and it seems like the show thinks we know more about Frank than we actually do, while Ray is so on the nose that I understand far too much about him. But wait! Maybe he’s dead? Those final few moments were pretty gripping, and it could point to interesting things to come. But I find it hard to believe he’s actually a goner.

vince vaughn colin farrell

Erin: I enjoyed the scene between Paul and his mother as well and finally began to feel a sense of discomfort, which is something this season has lacked so far. But I also really loved the final scene with Ray in Caspere’s secret home. The animal masks and vintage radio amped up the (possible) presence of the occult, and things were just starting to get interesting. Like you said, I can’t imagine the season killing off its lead character just yet. Still, it feels a bit cheap to tease audiences with such a big cliffhanger so early on.

The lack of identity you mention is my main criticism of the first two episodes overall. This season has no sense of place, which is surprising for a plot so grounded in a distinct locale. The corruption and grimy immorality of last season hung over every episode, reminding viewers of the horrors of world Rust and Marty were immersed in. It’s fine that Season 2 isn’t trying to recreate that feeling, but it makes the atmosphere that much less intriguing. Why care about a kidnapped official from a city no one cares for in the first place? Even after two episodes, I still don’t feel like we’ve witnessed enough of the idiosyncrasies of the fictional Vinci — I’m longing to see more of it, but the low-quality crushing car scenes and brief shots of factories do little to characterize it. Whatever happens moving forward, I hope that final scene pays off in a major way.

Matt: It gave me the sense that Ray knew more than the audience did. There was a certain comfort on his face as he lurked through Caspere’s home, implying his power-abusing corruption might extend to the expired city manager. That would give his need to retain custody over his possibly illegitimate son — the part of his life that he sees as a saving grace — a sense of purpose that stretches beyond clichéd daddy issues. Conversely, maybe he’s working to crush Frank’s entire operation after spending so much time indebted to him. That’s a script-flipping I’d sign on for. Either would ground the mystery by contouring the good-or-evil debate the show hasn’t convinced us to invest in regarding these characters. Maybe this is Season 2’s turning point. Here’s to hoping for a more immersive discussion next week.

Erin: The possibility of Ray withholding information and/or conning Frank all along is the most exciting theory yet, and one that could quickly turn me into a fan of this season. I’ve wondered whether scrutinizing this show episode by episode may hurt our perception of it. Last season I fell so deeply down the rabbit hole of uncovering the Yellow King’s identity that I nearly lost sight of the overall story at hand. While I’m still skeptical, I am going to try to pull back a bit and let the next few episodes wash over me, and hopefully they will surprise us both.

Homer And Marge Simpson To ‘Legally Separate’ In September Episode Of ‘The Simpsons’

There’s trouble in Springfield.

“Simpsons” producer Al Jean says Homer and Marge Simpson, the main characters of the long-running animated series, will “legally separate” in the upcoming season premiere in September.

“In the premiere, it’s discovered after all the years Homer has narcolepsy and it’s an incredible strain on the marriage,” Jean told Variety. “Homer and Marge legally separate, and Homer falls in love with his pharmacist, who’s voiced by Lena Dunham. We’ll have cameos from the other women from ‘Girls.'”

Jean didn’t say how long the separation would last, but given the show’s history, it’s a safe bet the pair will be reunited by the end of the episode.

The Simpsons’ marital woes were a topic of discussion on “The View” on Tuesday, as Whoopi Goldberg feigned outrage over the news.

What the hell?” she said. “Homer, what about a sister? In the time that I’ve seen you, I’ve never seen you with a black woman. Or maybe Marge is just a light-skinned sister and they haven’t said it. I don’t know.”

Jean told Variety about some of the other upcoming plot points and guest stars as well as the guest stars he wished he had booked. Read the full interview here.

Over the weekend, Jean said that this season would also feature an episode in which Bart Simpson would die at the hands of his longtime nemesis, Sideshow Bob. The death will be part of the annual “Treehouse of Horror” Halloween special, which doesn’t share continuity with the rest of the series — meaning Bart’s death will last only for that one episode.

“The Simpsons” is scheduled to return to Fox on Sept. 27.

As of now, it looks like the series will be without Harry Shearer, who voices Mr. Burns, Ned Flanders and a number of other iconic characters. Shearer said last month he would be leaving the show after failing to reach an agreement on a new contract.
