The Best Clothing Subscription Services For Every Kind of Guy

“Let me spend the weekend shopping to refresh my wardrobe,” said not many guys, ever. More likely than not, you may find yourself getting dressed for an important meeting or a friend’s party and suddenly realize your look is more outdated than a flip phone. Sure, you could search store to store for the essential pieces that will flatter your body and reintroduce your look to the modern day—but let’s face it, most of us don’t have the time. That’s where online styling and subscription services come in. Here, we compare some popular services to narrow down what works best for your situation.

Style Girlfriend

If you’ve seen paparazzi shots of stars leaving Whole Foods looking like they’re in a Mr Porter catalog, you know what a professional stylist can do for you. But who can afford that? Megan Collins, the highly personable and knowledgeable founder behind The Style Girlfriend, has just introduced a service that works like a personal stylist—without the high cost. Just fill out a questionnaire about your style and needs, then schedule a one-on-one Skype chat with a personal shopper assigned to peek into your closet and go over your budget, your body type, your style icons, and more. From there, you’ll be emailed a curated shopping list with items sourced from all over the web and chosen especially for you (at multiple price points, based on your feedback). Your personal shopper will curate outfit ideas and offer advice and styling tips for how to wear your new pieces together with the stuff you already own.

TIMING: Only as requested.

PRICING: There are two flat-fee options (neither include the clothes). A Wardrobe Refresh is $ 79 and will find you four to six pieces. It’s ideal for a specific occasion, like a party or interview. The Wardrobe Reboot is $ 199 and is meant for a more dramatic overhaul: It includes 12-15 pieces. Prices include one round of revisions.

SHIPPING: Prices depend on where you order your clothes from.

PROS: Since your personal shopper is hunting all over the internet, the variety of brands is endless and the clothing options they present can be discounted or on clearance. There’s no commission, so there’s no pressure to buy stuff if you don’t like it. The styling advice is also priceless.

CONS: You’re in charge of pulling the trigger and buying the clothes (which can be a good thing or a bad thing, depending on your personality). The styling fee does not include the clothing.

IDEAL FOR: Guys who need style advice and someone to do the legwork of editing the endless options out there.

10 Basic Fashion Rules Every Guy Should Know

Stitch Fix

This hot and constantly innovating San-Francisco based service launched its men’s department in 2016 and offers a range of clothing, from performance gear to dress shirts. Complete an online profile and and Stitch Fix’s human stylists and AI algorithms will analyze your feedback to curate a box of five items and send them to your home.  The company just recently expanded men’s offerings to include 100 brands and 800 potential size combinations, which is excellent news for guys who aren’t a standard size medium with a 32 inch inseam. New sizing options range up to 3XL in tops and pants run from 28 x 28 up to 48 x 36. Other recent offerings include shoes, accessories (everything from hats to ties), and Extras, a curated collection of basics that we all need but hate to shop for: underwear, undershirts, and socks. Also, the company just launched Stitch Fix for kids, so you can take the pain out of shopping for your offspring as well.

TIMING: Get a Fix on demand, bi-weekly, monthly, or sign up for installments every two or three months. You have three days to keep or return your items.

SHIPPING + RETURNS: Free.

PRICING: Clothing starts at $ 28 and goes up to $ 450 for tailored pieces, but the range you receive depends on your feedback. A $ 20 styling fee is applied towards your purchase and you’ll get a 25 percent discount if you keep everything in your box.

PROS: If you have trouble finding clothes that fit, this is your service. Stitch Fix offers an incredible number of options in every category for guys of every size. The in-house brands manufactured exclusively for Stitch Fix are on-trend and affordable, and the company is also constantly improving and adjusting based on client feedback.

CONS: It can take a few shipments for a stylist and the AI to figure out your style, and the lack of a preview option means less control over your Fix. Clothes don’t go on sale. The three day window can feel like a tight deadline, though they will work with you if you need more time.

IDEAL FOR: Any guy who has problems finding clothes that fit well. Stitch Fix’s size and style range is exceptional and its budget options are also vast.

Trunk Club

The OG of subscription boxes, Trunk Club launched in 2009 and offers two ways to help you shop. You can do it in person at a Clubhouse (there are locations in Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Washington DC, Los Angeles, and New York) or go online. The former involves an in-store fitting with a stylist who matches you with size, style, and spending preferences. In this scenario you can try everything on and leave with clothing that day. If you aren’t in one of those six cities or can’t make it to a Clubhouse, you can chat with a stylist on the phone or via instant messenger and complete an online profile with your sizes, style, and budget. Then your stylist will curate a selection of six to ten pieces and send an itemized preview email. Accept or reject the selections and a Trunk will be shipped out to you within about a week. They also offer men’s custom clothing services at their Clubhouses, where you can get measured and choose the fabrics and styles of the pieces you want.

TIMING: You’ll have 48 hours to approve or change your Trunk preview. Returns must be made five days after you receive your items. Set up monthly or seasonal Trunk deliveries, or work with your stylist to come up with another delivery schedule.

PRICING: A $ 25 styling fee is charged even if you don’t keep anything in your delivery. If you decide to keep at least one item, that $ 25 will be credited toward whatever you keep.

SHIPPING + RETURNS: Free

PROS: The delivery includes name brands, and the preview helps improve the chances you’ll get something you like.

CONS: Inseam options are limited to size 34, but Trunk Club will hem pants or jeans at Clubhouses and Nordstrom locations for free. Six to ten pieces might be a lot for some guys.

IDEAL FOR: Guys who want premium brands and don’t mind paying for them, and those who like the flexibility of getting fitted and choosing items in-store.

Frank + Oak Style Plan

This Canadian do-good brand marries style with sustainability. The company is mindful of the materials used in clothing, and it offers ethically sourced products made with recycled polyester and organic fibers, as well as water-efficient denim. The brand seeks out local manufacturers like Petites-Mains, which supports underprivileged women, and they also contribute a portion of sales to the human rights organization Equitas. For customers, the styling process is as straightforward as the company’s classic styles: Fill out a profile and each month Frank + Oak stylists will choose up to three on-trend pieces, which include everything from machine-washable merino wool sweaters and oxford shirts to clean-cut suits and sturdy leather boots. You have 72 hours to approve their choices and add or delete items when you preview your box.

TIMING: You have seven days to keep or return items sent. For now, it’s only offered on a monthly basis, but members can choose to skip a month. Frank + Oak is considering more frequency options in the future.

PRICING: Items cost between $ 29 and $ 149. The stylists’ fee is $ 25, which can be applied to items you choose to keep.

SHIPPING + RETURNS: Free

PROS: The prices for this conscious clothing are really accessible and the limited number of pieces sent in each box won’t be overwhelming.

CONS: The process doesn’t seem to involve the stylist as much as other services, but the ability to preview and edit your delivery helps eliminate misses.

IDEAL FOR: Environmentally and ethically woke fellas who don’t need a major wardrobe overhaul—just a few clean and classic pieces each month.

Bombfell

If you go with Bombfell, be prepared to talk about yourself. Founded in 2011, this New York-based service asks for a ton of details in its initial questionnaire, such as body type and complementary colors, as well as brands you like and dislike, plus what style questions and issues you’d like to focus on. It’s a highly customizable service where clients can request anywhere between one to five items per shipment instead of a mandatory number of picks. Using a combination of AI and human stylist input, Bombfell focuses on mostly casual items (everything from jeans and tees to blazers and bags) and sends preview emails before orders ship so you’ll know what to expect. The brand recently partnered with JCPenney and targeted the Big & Tall men’s market, so they have more fits for bigger guys. They also offer free half-hour consultations with a stylist in person at their New York City headquarters.

TIMING: Choose to have shipments arrive every month, two months, three months, or on demand. Returns should be made within seven days of receiving your order.

PRICING: The average price for pieces is $ 89, and there’s a $ 20 styling fee with each order. The more you keep, the bigger the discounts: Hanging on to four or more items in a single shipment means 20 percent off of your entire purchase. If you keep 3 items, you’ll get 15 percent off. If you keep 2 items, you’ll get 10 percent off.

SHIPPING + RETURNS: Free

PROS: Bombfell includes plenty of affordable brands you know and a few lesser known ones as well. With the new partnership with JC Penney, bigger guys will have more options.

CONS: Sizes are somewhat limited for shorter and smaller men.

IDEAL FOR: Guys who want maximum flexibility to choose just a few items rather being tied to a set number of pieces in each delivery.

The Stylish, Lightweight Wolverine Sneakers Every Guy Needs

As we’ve mentioned before, a wardrobe isn’t complete without a pair of hard-wearing leather boots to see you through years of muck and rain. But until Wolverine’s new 1000 Mile Original Sneaker, that kind of durability wasn’t expected from a pair of casual kicks.

These shoes show that the 135-year-old American bootmaker can hang with even the trendiest streetwear brands.

5 Pairs of Stylish Dad Sneakers That Will Instantly Upgrade Your Look

The sneakers take their name from Wolverine’s legendary 1000 Mile Boot, and they share that shoe’s signature curved collar and stitch pattern.

They’re also made in the company’s factory in Big Rapids, Michigan, where four shades of soft, unlined Horween leather are sewn to lightweight Vibram rubber soles.

A technique called cupsole construction, which effectively fuses the sole to the upper, keeps the sneakers feeling supportive—though it also means that you can’t resole them.

But that’s fine, because these things are built to outlast any shoe in your closet.

19 things every man should own

We’re grown-ups now. It’s time to put down childish things. Your PlayStation is no longer your most prized possession. Air Jordans have moved from everyday attire to casual wear. Most of all, you’ve started doing things for yourself. That means you require a list of necessities, and that’s where we come in.We’ve done the leg work. Some items you might have already and others might be on your wishlist. But here’s a rundown of everything a man like you needs.

1. A tailored suit

As a matter of both utility and principle, every man needs at least one suit in his closet. But do it right. Make sure the suit is tailored to fit your body and show off the hard work you’ve done in the gym, and in the kitchen. Go for a neutral color, like navy, grey or black.

2. Brown and black dress shoes

A nice pair of shoes can upgrade any outfit. If you’re going to choose one, go with a brown pair that you can mix in with any look. In terms of style, an oxford loafer is like the universal shoe for your wardrobe. They work with jeans, khakis, and slacks.

3. Shoe polish

You wash, dry, dry-clean, and iron your clothes. Are you giving your shoes the same attention? Because the same principle applies: A little effort goes a long way.

4. A leather belt

Here’s a general man-law: If your pants have belt loops, wear a belt. Another tip: Always match your belt with your shoes.

5. A sports jacket

A sports jacket or blazer can upgrade just about any outfit. Whether you’re wearing a T-shirt and jeans or a dress shirt and pants, a sports jacket will stamp some maturity on it.

6. Cologne

Here’s something you already know: Women like a man who smells good. If you’re just starting out picking a fragrance, find one scent you like. Then build on that. Just don’t bathe in it. Spray a little on your chest and the base of your throat.

7. A wallet

We’re all too old now to just shove things in our pockets. Just remember, this isn’t your father’s giant, bulging leather wallet that protrudes from his back pocket. Go for a thinner version or use a simple card holder.

8. A travel bag

You’ve graduated from backpacks and gym bags. Toss your things into a more respectable carrying case that’s perfect for a weekend getaway or business trip.

9. A nice watch

Yes, you could check the time on your cell phone or your tablet, or your laptop or the positioning of the sun. But a nice watch says a lot about your taste. Consider it the grandfather of all accessories.

10. A grooming kit

Unless you have a live-in barber, consider this an essential tool kit for your face.

11. A quality chef’s knife

You don’t really need an entire knife set unless you want it for decoration. If you’re going to buy one kitchen knife, make it a chef’s knife. Don’t let the price tag scare you off. It’s better to have one knife that can do five things than five different knives that you barely use.

12. A cast iron skillet

It’s non-stick, easy to clean, and you can use it on the stove and in the oven at any temperature. Plus, it’s sturdy, doesn’t scratch, and can probably last you a lifetime.

13. A passport

It’s your bus pass to see the world. Get a passport. Get some stamps in it.

14. An iron and an ironing board

Yes, it’s easier to take all your clothes to the cleaners, but that’s not always practical. You never want to leave home looking like you slept in your clothes. And you’ve passed the stage where it’s okay to iron your shirt on the kitchen counter.

15. A lint roller

Having a lint roller can be a life saver. It’s usually more effective and easier on fabric than a lint brush.

16. A pair of sunglasses

Find a pair that compliments your face. Aviators and wayfarers are safe bets if you’re looking to add a little flair.

17. A recipe book

Read this carefully: Women. Love. A. Man. Who. Cooks. Whether it’s a do-it-yourself date night dinner or you’ve got the choice of either cooking or ordering Chinese, it’s time you learned to fend for yourself.

18. A toolbox

We’re not saying that you should become Bob the Handyman, but you should have easy access to a hammer, wrench, and screwdriver at all times.

19. A universal remote

The family of remote controls sitting by the television—one for the TV, one for the cable, and another for the DVD player—they have to go. Make your life easier.

6 Lightweight Jackets Every Guy Needs in the Summer

We get it: the whole point of summer is that you get to leave your jacket at home. But there are arguments to doing the contrary: not only will lightweight jackets pull your look together, but the comfort of having an extra layer once the temperature dips at night makes them a good option. (Plus, having somewhere to store your headphones, pocket knife, pens, and sunglasses that isn’t the pocket of whatever pair of pants you’re wearing is always a welcome thing.) Sure, don’t bring a jacket for those miserable sweaty triple-digit days, but a jacket at the office will save you from office air conditioners, cold conference rooms and any last-minute after-work plans that might creep up.

In the beginning, aftershave was little more than an antiseptic that your barber slapped on your face post-blade activity to avoid bacterial infection from accidental nicks. 8 of Fall’s Most Stylish Sweatshirts, at Every Price Point

Initially panned as nothing more than a fleeting trend, fashionable sweats (or athleisure, for those of you who like a good portmanteau) have proven their staying power over the past few seasons. But the good news is

24 Things Every Man Should Have in His Closet

Style is about as subjective as it gets. Because it's, ultimately, an expression of who you are, it’s one of many things in life that’s so intensely personal that people can get emotional if you give them the slightest suggestion that you don't like an element of what they're wearing.

But with most things, there are basic guidelines around the most essential items a guy needs to have

A Winter Bath for Every Ailment: The Soaks That Cure Colds, Sore Muscles, and Beyond

Photographed by Mikael Jansson, Vogue, July 2014

“There must be quite a few things a hot bath won’t cure, but I don’t know many of them,” Sylvia Plath wrote in The Bell Jar. Decades later, in parts of the world where water flows freely, her words still resonate. This is the time of year we sit on our bathtub’s ledge, reach for our faucets, settle the knobs at a temperature just below piping, and plug the drain. Whatever has coaxed us to the bath—a chill down the spine, a tickle in the throat, a muscular ache—the water, and what we add to it, is the secret to recovery.

The healing powers of a bath are rooted in the mere ritual of drawing one and the warmth of the water, both of which are near infallible solutions for “stress, muscle relaxation, and improving joint stiffness,” says the medical director of the Atlanta Center for Holistic and Integrative Medicine, Tasneem Bhatia, M.D. From there, specific goals can be tailored to suit your needs, with beauty brands mixing up soaks that offer everything from a relaxing digital detox to a submersion de-bloating experience.

The key to the cure-all is choosing the right ingredients. For this, we asked Bhatia and Manhattan dermatologist Gervaise Gerstner to guide us through bath time’s most potent elixirs.

Seal Wasn’t Really Into Renewing His Vows To Heidi Klum Every Year

Before separating in 2012, Heidi Klum and Seal made headlines for throwing elaborate, oftentimes themed vow renewal parties every year. (Who could forget the couple’s notorious “white trash”-themed wedding in 2009?)

Turns out, Seal wasn’t really a big fan of the tradition. In a new interview with Andy Cohen on his SiriusXM radio show, the 52-year-old singer opened up about the couple’s anniversary fetes. (The pair married in May 2005 and went onto renew their vows in places like Costa Careyes, Mexico and Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago Club in Florida.)

“That was my ex-wife’s idea, to be honest,” the “Kiss From A Rose” singer admitted. “It kind of turned into a little bit of a circus, which I wasn’t terribly fond of because, by default, I’m quite a private person.”

Meanwhile, in 2010, the Klum gushed about how much the renewals meant to the couple and their four kids: ”It’s our time — a lovely family time,” she told Redbook. “It’s about remembering this moment of love we gave to each other and reinforcing it.”

Though Seal said he “disliked” how heavily publicized the vow renewal ceremonies became, he ultimately went along with it to make his former wife happy.

“You’re married and you become a team player,” the Grammy Award winner told Cohen. “You understand that each of you have different lives and you do whatever you can to support your partner’s life.”

He added: “I don’t know how necessary [renewing our vows] was, but it was cool.”

No word if Seal felt equally unenthused about Klum’s annual Halloween costume parties – a tradition she continues to this day. (In the photo below, from the supermodel’s 2006 party, he looks pretty into it.)

How a Gay Dad Comes out Today – and Every Day

“Titanium metal!” my son exclaimed. “Like a fast robot police sports car!”

“Pink!” my daughter excitedly squealed.

“And what do you think?” I asked my husband, as we were shopping for our new car. “You need to like the color, too.”

A salesperson in the showroom, overhearing our conversation, inquired, “Why does your brother need to like the color of the car you’re buying?”

Since coming out over 20 years ago, I’ve realized that coming out is not a one and done thing.

But now, as a gay dad, with a husband and two kids, coming out happens pretty much on a weekly, if not, daily, basis.

This September, my son started playing hockey, and I’m the assistant coach.

During our coaches meeting, many of the coaches in the room mentioned that we hadn’t received an email, inviting use to fill out one of the forms we were reviewing.

The reply?

“Your wives probably filled it out, without you knowing!”

I don’t intentionally come out every day. Or even purposely call myself a gay dad. No big announcements, no celebratory parties, no viral YouTube videos… well, okay… maybe oneor two

Yet, the reality is, I am a proud gay dad, whose family looks a bit different than the majority of families where we live.

Earlier this year, my husband I and were out walking with our kids, and new neighbors came up to introduce themselves.

After a bit of small talk, they then asked, “So… what’s going on here… Full House? — guys raising kids together?”

“Well, kind of, but in this case, we’re husbands,” we replied.

Them: “Husbands?”

Me: “Husbands.”

Them: “Husbands?”

Me: “Yes… husbands.”

Them: “Oh… you’re a same-sex couple! Honey — we have a same-sex couple on our new street!”

I know not every coming out moment is funny and not every coming out moment garners a positive reaction.

I also know that barriers still exist for so many LGBTQ individuals, and that some people still feel that they have to hide this part of their identity.

Personally, I’m inspired by those who have “come out” before me — who were visible on the first National Coming Out Day, 27 years ago, when it wasn’t easy to be heard.

Twenty years ago, the hardest words to ever come out of my mouth were, “I’m gay” — and unfortunately, the reactions weren’t as positive or as humorous as the reactions I get now.

For so many youth the reactions still aren’t favorable.

In fact, it’s estimated that 25-40 percent of homeless youth identify as LGBTQ.

It’s one of the reasons why I want to live my life so transparent and so visible.

I know that I don’t have to come out in those every day moments but I do feel a responsibility to be visible and to be out.

I want to be a role model for those who aspire to be out, but don’t think they can.

I want to change perception of what families look like, and inspire those who think that by coming out, they have to give up their dream of being a parent.

I want to help LGBTQ youth so that they feel they can live their authentic lives.

One of the best notes I have ever received about one of my blog posts, was from a mother, whose son was having a hard time coming out. He was afraid of being rejected and he thought that by coming out, he would have to give up his dream of being a dad. After reading my post, her son had the courage to come out and to live his authentic life. This woman’s letter was so heartfelt, and showed me how important it is to be visible — because you never know who is going to be helped by your story.

I recognize how fortunate I am. I can be a dad to two incredible kids, a husband, a professional in business world, an assistant hockey coach, a blogger — and an out, gay man.

No one bats an eye or treats me differently when they find out that, no, I actually don’t have a wife. That tall, handsome, man I live with, he’s my husband and papa to our kids — and I love him dearly.

Oh… and the choice of color we selected for the car?

While there was a part of me who really wanted to choose pink… driving a fast robot police sports car is cool, too. Plus, it looks pretty awesome parked in our driveway beside the even cooler mini-van.

Why Every 2016 Candidate Should Get Out While They Still Can

By now, if you’re one of the people who decided to embark on the strange and wonderful journey of becoming president, you’ve probably experienced a lot of personal highs. You’ve traveled to far-flung parts of the country and met some great people. You’ve gotten your mug on television and have been chased down by reporters. You’ve met some of our weirdest billionaires, eaten some state fair food and participated in a candidate debate. What an experience this has been!

Well, hope you took some ‘Grams because it’s time to get out while the getting’s good.

What? You don’t understand what we’re talking about? Look, we’re going to let you in on a little secret. “President of the United States” is a terrible and thankless job that doesn’t pay well and subjects you to relentless criticism. The power’s not all it’s cracked up to be and the perks get old. Plus, any time something goes wrong in the world, you’re the first person everyone calls.

This job sucks, and if you’re smart, you’ll let someone else do it. Besides, every single one of you has a good reason to quit the race. Maybe you’re not aware of it, but trust us, we’ve seen it. And on this week’s First To Last, we’ll tell each of you the reason it’s time for you to make your Irish goodbye.

RANK CANDIDATE
1
HILLARY CLINTON
You have more money than God, nearly as much fame — and you don’t look like you’re enjoying running for president at all. Escape.
2
JEB BUSH
Good God, man, the most exciting thing that’s happened to you so far is you won Eric Cantor’s endorsement. Take your weight loss and run with it.
3
MARCO RUBIO
You’re young, you’ve still got student loans and a fresh face that could get bruised in this Trumped-up slap-fight. Buy yourself a larger boat and sail away, sail away, sail away.
4
BERNIE SANDERS
Bernie, you’re a great guy. But some of your most dedicated Twitter followers are feeling the Bern way too much. Cool those jets.
5
DONALD TRUMP
Dude, you have lost a ton of prestige for a job you don’t even want. Why go on? Eject.
6
SCOTT WALKER
Wow, this is a lot harder than you thought it was gonna be, isn’t it? Take a powder.
7
BEN CARSON
We can’t get our heads around the fact that you used to be so good at something so hard — and now you’re doing the opposite. Stay in your lane.
8
MIKE HUCKABEE
At this point, you’re probably in a good position to up your salary at Fox. Get back to it before you blow it.
9
TED CRUZ
More than almost anyone else, Donald Trump stole your thunder. Retreat.
10
RAND PAUL
Remember a minute ago when we said almost anyone else? Recharge.
11
JOHN KASICH
Ever get the nagging sensation that this is probably as good as it’s ever going to get? Peace out.
12
CARLY FIORINA
It’s wrong you have to fight CNN to get into the debate, but what a sad thing to be fighting for. Take it on the arches.
13
LINDSEY GRAHAM
Whoa, Lindsey, you said that you were gonna beat Donald Trump’s brains out? Man, you better really mean that! If not, you’ve got to hit the bricks.
14
CHRIS CHRISTIE
And how are you gonna let Lindsey Graham become the anti-Trump alpha dog? Son, hit the showers.
15
MARTIN O’MALLEY
You can stay because we need someone to end lists with.

Friday Talking Points — Every Sulfurous Belch

OK, I fully admit I stole that title. Well, maybe not “stole,” since I’m about to give it proper credit, but it certainly wasn’t my own original idea. The line comes from George Will, and (of course) refers to Donald Trump. Part of the fun for Democrats this summer has been watching the angst of serious-minded conservative columnists as they realize how large a portion of the Republican base doesn’t really care what serious-minded conservatives inside the Beltway think about much of anything. Will was the best (but by no means only) example of this last week, as he started his column off with a real humdinger of an opening paragraph:

Every sulfurous belch from the molten interior of the volcanic Trump phenomenon injures the chances of a Republican presidency. After Donald Trump finishes plastering a snarling face on conservatism, any Republican nominee will face a dauntingly steep climb to reach even the paltry numbers that doomed Mitt Romney.

Ah, c’mon George… tell us how you really feel about Trump! Heh.

The entire Trump phenomenon reminds me of a basic rule from the world of magical/fantasy fiction. It’s not quite Asimov’s “three laws of robotics,” but it’s still been used my many authors who write about wizards casting dangerous spells. The rule of thumb among wizards? “Do not call up that which you cannot put down.” Don’t summon demons or otherworldly forces if you’re not strong enough to defeat them, in other words.

You can probably see where I’m going with this, in relation to Donald Trump. The Republican Party has called up a force of nature that it is, quite obviously, completely incapable of controlling or defeating. Hey, couldn’t have happened to a nicer political party! All those decades of dog-whistle language, coded references, and wink-wink-nudge-nudge that the Republican Party has benefited from are now coming home to roost.

George Will isn’t the only one freaking out by this new reality. Bill Kristol, who is famously always wrong about pretty much everything, wrote a column this week proposing eight or nine new candidates for the Republican presidential race (the most absurd: Samuel Alito). Because, obviously, seventeen is not enough. Frank Luntz, famous Republican pollster and spin doctor, held a focus group of Trump supporters which left him (according to his own statement) weak in the knees, with his legs all a-tremble.

Of course, not everyone is horrified at Trump’s success. He just picked up the endorsement of David Duke, for whatever that’s worth. Trump also tossed out Jorge Ramos from a press conference, and called two of his supporters “passionate” after they beat a homeless man with metal pipes, in support of Trump’s position on immigrants. All the while, Trump’s numbers continue to improve in the polls, where he’s now edging towards 30 percent of all Republican primary voters. If he manages to top 35 percent, then he may become absolutely unstoppable (much to serious-minded conservatives’ collective dismay).

Some Republicans are now even contemplating rigging the primary so Trump’s name doesn’t appear on their state’s ballots. As usual, when Republicans can’t win at the polls, their fallback position is to cheat. State-level party bigwigs in Virginia and North Carolina are considering taking this route, and South Carolina already has the rule the others are contemplating — every Republican candidate must sign a “loyalty oath” to support the party’s eventual nominee and not run as an independent in the general election, or their name doesn’t appear on the primary election ballot. Obviously, these sorts of pledges are utterly unenforceable, so it’ll be interesting to see how Trump plays it. But the mere fact that the state-level party honchos are even considering this sort of thing is an accurate measure of the desperation which exists among establishment Republicans right now.

Trump continues to roil the Republican waters on the immigration issue. The other GOP candidates are being exposed as complete cowards when it comes to reacting to Trump’s grand “ship them all home” plan. Scott Walker probably stumbled the worst, as he floundered around for days trying to figure out his stance on the Fourteenth Amendment. He was for changing it, against changing it, and tried to brush the entire question off; none of which made him seem even one tiny iota presidential.

Jeb! Bush thought he might tap into some of the Trump anger by tossing around the term “anchor babies,” which was almost as spectacular a failure as Walker’s vacillation. Jeb! then tried to explain that anchor babies were really more of an Asian problem, thereby offending two minority demographics at once. Boy, it’s fun to watch the Republican “minority outreach” effort in action, isn’t it? As George Will so accurately predicted (most especially on Latino and Asian vote percentages), Republicans “face a dauntingly steep climb to reach even the paltry numbers that doomed Mitt Romney.” Jeb! also (you just cannot make this stuff up, folks!) marked the ten-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina by releasing a new ad this week showing Jeb! standing right next to Mike “Heckuva Job” Brown, the disgraced former head of FEMA who fiddled while New Orleans drowned. As the image is shown, Bush intones: “We have the best emergency response team on the ground, in the country, and in the world.” Heckuva job, Brownie!

Over on the Democratic side of the race, there was an explosion of interest in a new candidate that might be labeled “Bidenpalooza.” Joe’s obviously seriously considering a run, and the Wall Street Journal even reported he is currently leaning towards throwing his hat in the ring. Don’t expect an announcement any time soon, though, as Biden says he’ll make a decision by the end of next month.

Bernie Sanders got a front-page story in the New York Times this week. Of course, being the mainstream media and all, it was a total hit piece full of the snarkiest language possible. It absolutely ignored Bernie’s entire message and platform (of course), and absolutely refused to analyze why so many people are flocking to support him. Cornel West just endorsed Bernie’s candidacy this week, but very few political reporters noticed, since it doesn’t fit in with their “only white liberals support Sanders” go-to storyline.

That’s enough from the campaign trail for one week. In other fun news, the oldest message-in-a-bottle ever was returned to its sender recently, after a journey of more than a century. A British scientific group sent out a thousand postcards in bottles from 1904 through 1906, to study the currents in the North Sea. A couple just found one on a German island, and sent the postcard back to the group (which still exists). The Marine Biological Association made good on the century-old promise on the card, and sent a reward of one old shilling to the couple for returning the postcard. I don’t really have any reason for including this story, but it did make me smile, in an otherwise Trump-filled week. Maybe Sting or The Police can write a song about it, or something!

Most Impressive Democrat of the Week

We’re changing the title of this award this week, because they’re not technically Democrats. So we’re handing out the Most Impressive Activist Group Of The Week to Neighborhood Legislature, for their amusing and entirely appropriate political theater in California. From the story:

A group of protesters in California took a stand against the influence of money in politics Wednesday by imagining what it would look like if lawmakers had to publicly advertise their campaign donors on their clothes à la professional stock car drivers.

The protesters placed cardboard cutouts of all 120 California state lawmakers and Gov. Jerry Brown (D) in front of the state capitol in Sacramento. Each legislator wore the logos of the corporations that back them in the style of NASCAR drivers’ brand-filled uniforms.

The photos alone are worth clicking that link to see.

We’ve long been an advocate of this idea, although we certainly can’t claim to have thought it up ourselves. As far back as FTP [189] (scroll down to Talking Point 7), we’ve been big fans of plastering donor logos on congresscritters and other politicians. If America is going to be run by bribery, the least we should be able to do is see who is forking over all that money to buy the politicians!

For taking this idea and running with it, and for an absolute brilliant piece of political theater, the Neighborhood Legislature is hereby awarded the Most Impressive Activist Group Of The Week. This is one of those ideas we truly wish would go viral, on a national level.

[Congratulate Neighborhood Legislature on their official webpage, to let them know you appreciate their excellent stunt.]

Most Disappointing Democrat of the Week

Before we get to the main award, we do have one (Dis-)Honorable Mention this week, for New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, for waging a silly war on boobies. Laws banning topless women from appearing in public were changed a while back in New York, and some enterprising women are using their newfound right to bare their breasts in Times Square. Among the people dressed in Elmo suits or dressed as Captain America, there are now women wearing nothing but a thong and body paint. All of these folks are there for the same reason: to separate the tourists from their money. Charging ten bucks (or whatever the traffic will bear) to appear in a photo has long been a tradition in Times Square, so this is really nothing new.

Now, Times Square does have an even older history of being a sex district with triple-X theaters and whatnot, which was all cleaned up (so as not to scare the tourists) a while back. In other words, Bill de Blasio wanting to ban topless women from Times Square isn’t happening in a vacuum. He doesn’t want a return to the “bad old days,” but at the same time he seems to be overreacting to the perceived problem. If Hizzoner truly does want to end this practice, there’s really only one acceptable way to do so: change the law back. Ban boobies everywhere. This, however, might be a political problem for him.

In fact, the whole fracas really nothing short of knee-jerk “Won’t someone think of the children!!!” overreach. You know what? I bet children who see a painted lady’s chest won’t actually be as traumatized as all the pearl-clutchers think. Bill de Blasio should have stayed out of this fight, which is why he earns a (Dis-)Honorable Mention this week.

But, for the second week in a row, Hillary Clinton is the recipient of our Most Disappointing Democrat Of The Week this week. Clinton, like all presidential candidates these days, is struggling to be heard among the thousands of “Did you hear what Trump just said?” stories. So she apparently thought she’d use some shocking language of her own, and compared her political opponents to terrorists, because (by her logic) they both treat women badly.

Where to begin? First, there are hard lines in politics that should never be crossed. You don’t call someone a traitor, for instance, under any circumstances short of them being legally accused of actually selling the country out. Another of these rules is that you don’t call a political opponent a terrorist. Clinton crossed that line, almost flippantly.

Did Clinton have a point to make? Yes she did. Planned Parenthood and abortion are about to be the focus of an enormous political battle in Washington — one that might even result in another government shutdown. The battle has already been joined, and it is going to get fierce next month. Clinton was jumping in to this fray in an admirable fashion, rather than waiting on the sidelines and mouthing vague platitudes. She’s always been a champion for women’s rights, so it is entirely within her wheelhouse.

Even so, Clinton went too far. This is American politics, folks, and terrorist groups aren’t a part of it. The Taliban is not on any American ballot, to put it another way. While there are indeed many groups and countries around the world with horrendous records on women’s rights, it really has no bearing on domestic politics.

A final point: almost all American politicians are gigantic flaming hypocrites on the issue of women’s rights around the world, including not only Hillary Clinton but everyone else running for the presidency as well. If we really want to get up on our high horse about the way the Islamic State treats women, then it would require us (if we’re not going to be gigantic flaming hypocrites) to immediately suspend all ties with Saudi Arabia. The Saudis execute people by publicly beheading them, after all, and women in their country are not even allowed to do simple things like driving on their own. They’re about to have an election where — for the first time ever — women will be allowed to vote. If our gold standard for who America remains friends with is that women’s rights be respected, then our relationship with Saudi Arabia would be the first to go. If Hillary Clinton — or anyone else for that matter — speaks disparagingly about how terrorists treat women, then we would really like to hear someone ask her what her Saudi policy would be.

So for multiple reasons, Hillary linking her political opponents with terrorists was more than a little disappointing. Just because Trump is sucking all the oxygen out of the room right now does not mean Democrats should be stooping to his level (or even lower). Clinton can fight for women’s rights as fervently as possible without making such odious comparisons. She needs to back down on this one, but for now it has earned her another Most Disappointing Democrat Of The Week award.

[Hillary Clinton is a private citizen, and our longstanding policy is not to provide contact information for candidate websites, so you’ll have to search her contact info out yourself, sorry.]

Friday Talking Points

Volume 359 (8/28/15)

It’s still the Silly Season in Washington, so we don’t have a whole lot of substantive political talking points this week. When Congress returns, we’re in for a number of high-profile fights, but until then we’re just making do with what we’ve got. Just to warn everyone in advance.

1
   Making America Grate

Every so often, we are so struck by a clever turn of phrase that we have to give it a standalone talking point. This is one of those times, as Jonathan Capehart of the Washington Post ran an article this week under the best headline we’ve yet seen to describe the Trump phenomenon — a play on Trump’s own campaign slogan. It’s a cheap pun, but that doesn’t make it any less funny:

How Donald Trump Makes America Grate

2
   From denial to anger

This framing of the Trump situation is likely going to appear again and again, but Eugene Robinson of the Washington Post gets credit for being the first to point it out.

“The Republican Party seems to be destined to go through the classic ‘five stages of grief’ as they come to grips with Donald Trump’s success. Most establishment Republicans are still in the first stage, denial. Some have already moved on to anger — the second stage. I mean, did you read George Will’s ‘every sulfurous belch’ column this week? The third stage is going to be problematic, since it is bargaining — and Trump is a notoriously tough bargainer. This will inevitably lead to depression, and sooner or later to the final stage, acceptance. You might call it the grief of watching the Republican Party die, right in front of their eyes.”

3
   Strong growth

This is one to hit Jeb! with, in particular.

“Jeb Bush is running on a promise to achieve four percent growth in America’s economy. I wonder if he saw the most recent numbers, which showed the economy grew 3.7 percent in the second quarter of this year? Seems like President Obama’s doing almost as well as what Bush is promising, which reminds me of Mitt Romney’s promise to get unemployment down to six percent before 2016. Remember that one? Obama managed to achieve that in about half the time Romney promised. Seems like Republicans can’t even promise they’ll handle the American economy as well as Democrats routinely do in the real world.”

4
   $ 200 million and counting

Data to use in other state-level legalization fights.

“Colorado and Washington have so far taken in over two hundred million dollars in marijuana tax revenue. We don’t yet have data for Alaska and Oregon, but you can bet they’re raking in millions as well. By legalizing recreational marijuana use, these states have turned a big drag on their state budgets — policing, prisons, clogged courtrooms, and all the rest of it — into a huge asset. I’m sure there are other state governments out there who are paying attention. The success of legalization continues to benefit the states which have implemented it. $ 200 million ain’t exactly pocket change.”

5
   President Barack Obama Highway

This is going to be lots of fun for Democrats, for years to come.

“I see that Riviera Beach, Florida just voted to change the name of a road from ‘Old Dixie Highway’ to ‘President Barack Obama Highway.’ Personally, I can’t think of a better way to get rid of institutionalized racist memorials than to rename them after the first African-American president. In fact, I would bet that after Obama’s term in office ends, there will be a lot more things named after him all across America. Call it the revenge of Democrats after the orgy of naming so many things after Ronald Reagan a few years back.”

6
   Maybe Amazon will step in

This one is pretty funny.

“Among the many creative uses of drone aircraft we can now add their use to deliver banned things inside prison walls. An attempt was made in Maryland recently to fly in some drugs and pornography aboard a drone. While this attempt was foiled, it seems such an obvious use of new technology that we’ll likely see more and more of these attempts in the near future. How exactly are the cops going to keep the skies over prisons clear of drones? Skeet shooting?”

7
Jade Helm invasion a total flop

This qualifies as rubbing salt in the wound, really.

“I notice that the predicted invasion of Texas by the United States military seems not to have materialized. It wasn’t so long ago that the Texas governor was issuing dire warnings of the nefarious intent of America’s own military in carrying out an exercise called ‘Jade Helm 15,’ which did nothing but stoke paranoid delusions within the state. Well, the summer’s drawing to a close and I still haven’t seen one headline about the Army taking over Texas, or confiscating everyone’s guns, or rounding up its citizens for concentration camps, or any of the rest of the nonsense the rightwingers were spouting not so long ago. If Jade Helm really was a planned invasion of Texas, I have to say it’s been a total flop so far.”

The 7 Pieces You’ll Find in Every Well-Appointed Home (and Should Add to Yours)

home decor essentials

There are the furniture basics: the bed, sofa, coffee table, but real decor artistry comes with the smaller pieces—the items that help make a house a home. So what are these fabled pieces? Designer Lauren McGrath of mother-daughter design team McGrath II let us in on her seven under-the-radar must-haves. These are the secret workhorses and statement-makers that not only transform a space, but also easily transition from first apartment to family home.

1. Glossy, Colorful Ceramic Lamp

“A colorful and handmade ceramic table lamp is often what takes a room from good to great,” says McGrath. “And no one makes lamps like Christopher Spitzmiller—his colors are breathtaking, and each lamp is crafted by hand in his Manhattan pottery studio.”

2. Love Seat

“The love seat is one of the most versatile pieces of furniture,” says McGrath. “Once you’ve purchased your first, it easily moves from your first apartment to the foot of your bed in your first ‘grown-up’ home.”

3. Graphic Pillows

“In neutral rooms like this, we love to use graphic pillows to punch things up,” says McGrath. “Shop for vintage fabrics or choose small quantities of bespoke textiles and have pillows made to give your room a more curated look.”

4. Statement Wallpaper

“Wallpapering a room always helps elevate its look, but we find it particularly effective in entryways,” says McGrath. “It’s the perfect room in the house to take a risk and make a lasting first impression.”

5. Distinct Tray

“Large coffee tables are the norm today with more and more people entertaining outside the dining room. But a larger coffee table means you need to layer it with thoughtful—and useful—accessories,” says McGrath. “A chic tray is practical for serving drinks and snacks when entertaining, but also a lovely way to display a collection of books and a vase of flowers day to day.”

6. Something Alive

“No room is complete without something green and living,” says McGrath. “Our favorite place to buy cut flowers is the Dutch Flower Line located in Manhattan’s Flower District. And we often purchase succulents for our interiors—they’re more forgiving if neglected.”

7. Interesting Mirror

“Mirrors add depth to any room. Choose one with a dramatic shape or unusual finish,” says McGrath. “Or consider having one made at any framing store. You’d be surprised how easy this is to do, and there are so many materials and finishes available.”

Sports News in Brief: Every Comment On ‘Immaculate Reception’ YouTube Video Clearly From Franco Harris

PITTSBURGH—Noting that the dozens of rambling, overly excited posts date all the way back to when the clip was first uploaded in early 2011, sources confirmed Thursday that every comment below a YouTube video of the famed 1972 “Immaculate Reception” football play was clearly written by Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Fame running back Franco Harris. “Hands down THE best play in NFL history,” read a post left at 3:45 a.m. by YouTube user FHarris32, whose avatar appears to be a recent photo of Harris wearing his four Super Bowl rings on both hands. “This is what started the Steel Curtain dynasty and helped create one of the greatest teams of all-time. I still can’t believe I caught the ball like that after it was knocked down. Go Steelers!!!!” At press time, a long, largely incoherent rant disputing the “bullshit catch” had been posted by a YouTube …

5 Things Every Woman Needs to Know Before Shaving Her Face

By Amy Marturana for Well+GOOD

Last month a New York Times article revealed that celebrity facialist Kate Somerville and many of her female A-list clients (names noticeably withheld) shave their faces.

A reality star, soccer mom, and blogger also fessed up to the deed. Their reasons? It not only removes the hair (peach fuzz and dark strands alike), but it does a bang up job of exfoliating. Talk about a perfect recipe for an ultra-smooth face.

But wait a second. “Shaving” is not ever paired with “face” in the Unspoken But Seemingly Mandatory Body Hair Removal Manual for Women, where waxing, bleaching, lasering are all recommended as a course of action. Cue panic/confusion/genuine curiosity.

While these buzzy (or should we say fuzzy?) beauty admissions piqued the interest of thousands of women quietly noticing chin hairs in the bathroom mirror, they also raised a ton of questions. Like how to remove unwanted facial hair with a razor–could it be just as easy as the guys make it look? Or would it make matters worse?

So we went to the experts–a hair removal technician, a dermatologist, a plastic surgeon, and a facialist–and learned that before you take a razor to your pretty face, there are some things you really ought to consider.

Here are the five things you need to know before shaving your face:

1. It’s a myth that it will grow back darker and coarser. “Shaving has absolutely no effect on the rate of regrowth, the color, or the thickness of the hair. Although it may feel a little stubbly, the hair is not actually thicker at all,” explains Elizabeth Tanzi, MD, dermatologist and co-director of the Washington Institute of Dermatologic Laser Surgery in Washington, DC. So then, why have we been taught since puberty that this is the case?

Stephanie Kaulesar, an expert technician at hair removal salon Spruce & Bond clarifies: “What you are feeling is the blunt shaved edge of the hair instead of a thin pointed end that’s the natural shape of a hair strand.” Other than chemical processes, like when you get your hair colored or a perm, nothing can change the specific hair texture you’re born with (other than sneaky hormones).

More reading: 9 beauty tools insiders can’t live without

2. Try a men’s razor. They’re developed specifically for the face. “My favorite is the Schick Hydro 5,” says Kaulesar. “A man’s razor is designed to tackle tougher hair, they’re extremely sharp, and more durable.” Which means you’ll decrease your chances of causing irritation and ingrown hairs. Just make sure to shave in the same direction as hair growth, and limit the number of passes. Go slowly and carefully and don’t use a dull razor.

More reading: Two natural hair removal methods you need to try now

3. Never use the same razor you use on your legs. Keeping things–specifically bacteria and dead skin–separate is a good way to avoid irritation and potential infection, suggests Cecilia Wong, facialist and founder of Cecilia Wong Skincare. “If you use the same razor you use on your body, you put yourself at risk of nicks and cuts, which can cause inflammation and irritation and can lead to scarring and ingrown hairs,” she warns.

4. You’ll be more prone to ingrowns. Yes, shaving your face can have skin-smoothing benefits. But the friction and micro-damage it imparts on the skin can cause pesky ingrown hairs. “Shaving in the same direction in which the hair grows helps prevent irritation,” says Kaulesar of Spruce & Bond. She recommends washing gently with a washcloth, or regularly using your Clarisonic to keep ingrowns at bay. Don’t use in-grown products meant for the bikini line for your face.

5. Shaving at home is not the same as dermaplaning. Dermaplaning, which a lot of women are talking about right now, is an in-office procedure that’s more about exfoliation than shaving. It’s not something you should ever try at home, warns Dr. Daniel Maman, an NYC-based plastic surgeon and assistant clinical professor of plastic surgery at Mount Sinai Hospital. “Dermaplaning uses a specialized scalpel, held at a 45-degree angle to the face, to mechanically remove the superficial layer of dead skin cells,” he explains.

The goal is removing skin, not hair, though that’s often welcome side effect. In addition to trying to navigate facial contours with a very sharp object, “patients themselves will have difficulty judging exactly how deep and how extensive the shaving of superficial dead skin cells should be,” Dr. Maman adds. So leave that to the professionals.

Bottom line: If you’re looking for a simpler way to remove patches of facial hair without suffering through painful weekly upper lip waxes — with skin-smoothing benefits as a positive side effect–shaving your face might be worth a try. If the more intense skin-rejuvenating benefits of dermaplaning sounds more like your goal, see a plastic surgeon or derm who performs dermaplaning to see if the procedure is right for you.

News in Brief: Man Desperately Trying To Wring Every Last Ounce Of Relaxation From Final Day Of Vacation

ELKHART, IN—Saying even the tiniest moment of leisure counted, local man Brian Rabe told reporters Sunday that he was attempting to wring every last drop of relaxation from the single day that remained of his time off from work. “My four-day weekend’s almost done, so I just need to really dig in and focus on taking it as easy as humanly possible,” said Rabe, adding that if he stayed up later than usual, he could probably cram in half a season of Daredevil on Netflix. “I already made the mistake of opening a work email, and I can’t get sidetracked like that again. I’m going to read a book—better yet, read it outside so I don’t have to do a separate activity to get some sun—then move straight to video games.” At press time, Rabe had spent at least a third of his …

The Secret to Getting Good Beach Waves: A Guide for Every Hair Texture

Photographed by Mario Testino, Vogue, June 2011

With city dwellers across the country spiriting away to the beach this weekend, we’re predicting a rise in carefree surf-tousled hair. Rivaling the most coveted beauty benefits of a day at the shore (including Vitamin D and calorie-torching activity), the bombshell appeal of ocean-infused waves is so celebrated that almost every beauty brand has made an attempt to bottle it. And it seems they have. According to editorial hair gurus Harry Josh and Renato Campora, a seaside jaunt isn’t necessary for authentic-looking salt-sprayed strands. “Texture is the key,” says Josh, who explains that the best way to re-create it is to first consider your own hair type, then invest in the right products.

In fact, for those blessed with naturally wavy hair, a texturizing mist, like John Frieda Sea Waves Salt Spray will do all the work in “amping up your hair to greatness,” says Josh. “It smells like the beach and will help activate the wave” à la Gisele or Daria.  Meanwhile, tight curls can rely on thick, heavier wax to relax their natural coils into looser waves. Very straight hair will need the gritty assistance of Bumble and Bumble’s Surf Spray, and fine strands can find body and movement with the help of a light cream. For example, on towel-dried hair, Campora creates a “weightless” foundation for grip with Number 4 Texture Styling Crème. “It gives you a little bit of control.” Then, to encourage a loose curl, “Toss your head over and scrunch it every five or ten minutes until it dries,” says Josh. Though a quicker route to a finished product can be found with a blow-dryer (on low power and high heat) and a diffuser.

No matter your hair, Campora recommends topping off the look with a blast of Orlando Pita dry shampoo at the roots, for a volumizing effect that speaks of the ocean, not of layers of product. “You don’t want your hair to get heavy, so you can keep this in your bag to give yourself volume whenever you need it, without feeling like [there’s anything in it.]” Meaning the look will last as long as your shampoo cycle—or your next great coastal getaway.

Divorce Doesn’t Go Away and 9 Other Pointers Every Divorced Person Needs You to Know

We all know someone who’s divorced or divorcing or thinking about it. When we hear a couple is splitting, we feel a momentary sadness for them and then move on to our next task. Why? Because divorce isn’t shocking anymore. It’s become an unfortunate rite of passage for nearly 50 percent of us. But the numbers mean little to the people who have gone — or are going — through the process. The strength in numbers thing doesn’t apply to divorce because each and every divorce is uniquely decimating.

So, be mindful. Know that divorced folks are hurting in ways that may never resolve despite their best efforts to move on. Here are some tips for not shooting yourself in the foot around those who’ve dismantled their marriages and lives.

1. Being divorced isn’t a character flaw. Recently, I heard some friends discussing a male acquaintance. They didn’t have very many kind things to say about the guy. One friend chimed in while simultaneously rolling her eyes, “Well, he’s divorced so…” What the heck does that mean? That the ending of his marriage proves that he’s not of sound mind or character? Being divorced means his marriage didn’t work out and that’s it.

2. Being divorced doesn’t mean they can’t complain about the fallout. Even those in favor of ending their marriages may not be prepared for the emotional and financial consequences of doing so. Life is entirely pulled to pieces after a divorce. It’s a tough and lonely struggle. So, when your divorced friend complains she’s having a hard time making ends meet, your response should not be, “Well, this is what you wanted, isn’t it?”

3. Divorce doesn’t go away. Divorce is something you do that forever becomes something you are. It becomes part of the fabric of your being. Don’t dismiss someone’s divorce with, “Oh, that was ages ago! You must have completely moved on by now!” That’s not how it works. The long-reaching implications of divorce — emotional, financial, psychological — may never completely resolve.

4. Divorce isn’t always the reason kids screw up. Heck, doesn’t everyone’s kids screw up at some point? To assign a child’s behavior to his parent’s divorce isn’t entirely fair. Do kids sometimes act out as a result of divorce? Sure. But there may be something deeper going on that warrants a closer look. “Oh, well, you know his parents are divorcing,” is dismissive and unfairly judgmental.

5. Their next relationship isn’t a cure-all. So, your divorced friend is now in a good relationship. And you’re so happy for him. It seems this time around he’s really found Mr. or Ms. Right. But these new relationships are far more complex. Perhaps there are stepkids involved. Or angry, vindictive exes to deal with. Be patient with your friend as he navigates this often sticky road of second marriage.

6. Divorce changes friendships. When folks re-partner, there are a lot of traditions to merge. You may have spent the last 20 years celebrating every July 4th with your divorced friend, but now she has a partner who has spent the last 20 years celebrating it differently. Now your friend must make choices and compromises. Although it shakes up your expectations, be compassionate with her as she makes the hard decisions in order to keep her new relationship on track.

7. Don’t flaunt your intact family. Of course, you’re thrilled you’re celebrating your 20th wedding anniversary or gleefully planning the trip of a lifetime with your spouse, but be mindful to whom you’re speaking. There’s nothing wrong with telling your divorced friend about your plans, but be sure you’re not flaunting hurtful circumstances your friend has little chance of ever duplicating. Would you gush about parenting and pregnancy to someone who’s struggling with infertility? Of course not. So same goes for life’s milestones your divorced friend may never get to celebrate.

8. Don’t say you know what they’re going through. Because if you haven’t gone through it, you don’t. Divorce is a loss that shakes up one’s life on every conceivable level. And there are far and few other circumstances you can say the same about. Better to say, “I might not understand everything you’re going through, but you can always count on me to listen.”

9. Be ready to choose sides. This is a tough one you may swear you’ll never do but then life with your divorced friend proves to be complicated. Perhaps his new wife is at constant odds with your friend, his ex. Turns out that inviting them both to your daughter’s wedding may prove disastrous. Ask yourself which one was your true friend before their divorce. If that’s crystal clear, your decision has been made. If both partners were your true friends, speak with them about how to handle these uncomfortable situations. They will be better at guiding you because they’re living it every day.

10. Don’t disappear. Your friend needs you now more than ever. Get comfortable with divorce if you’re not. Your friend is not a social pariah, she’s a wounded puppy. She feels helpless and hopeless at times, regardless of how her life looks from the outside. Help her walk this difficult path knowing you play an intrinsic and irreplaceable part in her healing process.

Twin Sisters Have Worn Matching Clothes Every Day For Nearly 15 Years

One of the perks of having a sister is being able to raid each other’s closets and share clothes. But for twin sisters Kathy Heffernan and Rose Coles, sharing clothes has a completely different meaning.

twins
Identical twins Rosey Coles and Kathy Heffernan on vacation in 2013.

The sisters have been dressing alike for nearly 15 years — and they’re in their 60s. “The reaction is very good actually, and we get lots of nice remarks,” Coles told the UK’s Express. “People always say it is unusual to see twins that are our age dressing the same.”

The identical twins began dressing alike when they were teenagers but stopped when they got married and no longer lived together. Then, in 2000, both of them became single again. They decided to move closer to one another in Aldershot, England and to start dressing identically again.

Every day since then, the duo wear the exact same outfit when they go out, whether it’s to work, to go on vacation or to hit the town for a night out. And it’s gotten them both quite a bit of attention. “When we are on our own separately, people don’t take notice of us. But when there are two of us, it is like a magnet,” Coles said, adding that people often ask to take pictures with them. “It makes me feel like a celebrity a bit, I think I know how they feel a little bit now,” Heffernan said.

The pair say it was an easy decision as they have similar tastes in clothes and have become closer since their marriages ended. “We just got close again. It just happened sort of automatically … It made us feel very close again,” Heffernan said.

It’s not uncommon for twins to dress alike, especially as children. Occasionally, adult twins do as well. One photographer even made a photo series of twins of all ages dressing alike.

As for Coles and Heffernan, they now live next door to one another, which we can only guess makes choosing outfits much easier.

“We’ll do it forever — as long as we can,” Coles said. “We just enjoy it.”

This Crying Knicks Fan Is Every Knicks Fan Tonight

The New York Knicks drafted Kristaps Porzingis with the fourth pick in the 2015 NBA Draft on Thursday. Oh, you aren’t happy with that pick? Neither was this kid.

Here’s a freeze frame that really encapsulates the feeling of the New York City area.

“Apparently he’s the best player available, you know,” said one of my New York-based colleagues, trying to explain the decision to one of his friends. Stephen A. Smith was a bit more, uh, extreme?

The little, dedicated Knicks fan wasn’t alone in his reaction either.

Woj pleaded for reason.

But these are the Knicks. These are always the Knicks.

Let’s see how Porzingis deals with the pressure of playing in New York City.

Five Spa Tips Every Twenty-Something Should Know

2015-06-23-1435053663-3892833-zuriprocession_2.jpg

My niece graduated from Howard University last year. She seems to be doing well financially. I recently received an e-mail from her informing me that she was thinking of having one or two spa treatments. She wanted to know which ones she should try and as an African-American which were safest for her skin. As a former esthetician and a very protective aunt, I was inclined to tell her that none of them were safe unless I performed them! I realized though that I was being a bit “extra,” so I calmed down and provided recommendations on who, what and where she should go.

If you are among the other twenty-somethings around the globe also venturing into the world of spa goers, here are five things that you should know:

1. Do your research, use that technology!

Put Google to work. Type in the search word “best” plus the spa service and your town. Yelp, Insider, Bing, City Search or some other social media review site should pop up with information on a variety of therapists and spa professionals. You can drill down further from that point to gauge the perspective of the people providing the critique. Folks who give everyone a poor rating may be worth passing over.

2. You don’t always get what you pay for!

I’ve received good massage and wonderful customer service from low cost massage franchises. I’ve had very luxurious treatments and great service at Five-Star facilities. Unfortunately, price is not always commensurate with a great customer service experience. As a newbie you might want to begin your journey at one of the smaller companies or franchises which offer premium treatments at a deeply discounted price. Again check social media for the best therapist at that location.

3. Choose waxers wisely — avoid injury

Overseas many therapists have dual licenses which allows them to work in multiple disciplines. But this is not the case in the U.S.. Waxing services should never be done in a nail salon unless a cosmetology or aesthetic license is held by the technician performing the service.

If you decide to get a waxing service at a spa, whether here or abroad, ask for their most popular or senior wax specialist. Here’s why; like playing the piano, waxing proficiency takes time. Even the schools that teach waxing do not provide sufficient practice time for a therapist to build a level of expertise. The learning curve is developed from hands on experience, not theory.

Once you are in the waxers room, look for her to test the wax temperature on herself before placing it on your body. That will be a good sign. If she doesn’t and the wax feels too hot, speak up. If she ignores you, get up, let the front desk know what occurred and leave.

4. Intake forms are important

At many spas you will be given an “intake” form prior to a massage or facial service. This form will ask you to provide your contact information, medical issues and primary reason that you have come to the spa. Your therapist should review this information with you to ensure that she (1) doesn’t cause you physical harm (2)understands your needs fully to provide you with the best service. If she does not discuss your form with you, that is a major fail. Inform the spa manager. If you are told that the form was purely for government compliance, post your experience on social media. By the way, even if a form is not used the therapist should conduct an interview with you before starting your treatment.

5. Good facialists are hard to find

Before trusting your face to anyone, first schedule a consultation with the esthetician. This will allow you to see if;

1. She listens to you.

2. She knows what she’s talking about.

3. You feel gut comfortable with her.

Select a facialist who prefers to err on the side of caution. Facials should never cause pain and the skin can only be pushed to a certain point before trauma occurs. Avoid estheticians who recommend extractions or aggressive upgrades the first time around. A facial treatment should leave you glowing, refreshed and looking beautiful.

If you are of African, Asian, Latin or Middle Eastern descent, look for someone who has experience working with ethnic skin. Darker skin types in particular are often more sensitive and prone to irritation. Unfortunately most skin care schools are still not adjusting their curriculum to address this growing market.

With the international community of spa goers growing rapidly, information on the past experiences of others is easy to find. Social media can be used to share your own spa experiences, good and bad. That’s what the sites are there for.

If you encounter a serious service problem try to resolve it with the spa manager first or allow the organization to correct the situation. One on one customer feedback should make a good company better.

Ultimately though, remember that your opinion has power and could be heard around the world.
