What if the News Reported Only Facts?

The common view we see from the mainstream media is that President Trump is a monster and there is no doubt about it. In support of that view, they offer plenty of evidence. And by evidence, I mean they hallucinate they can read minds.

Pundit creates news by reading minds

One of the biggest illusions of life is that we humans are good at deducing the inner thoughts of both strangers and loved ones based on observing their actions. The truth is that we are terrible at knowing what others are thinking. We just think we are good at it. No one is good at it. No one.

Need proof of that claim?

Think about the last disagreement you had with a romantic partner. There’s a high likelihood that one of you was incorrectly interpreting the thoughts of the other. And a big cause of that wrongness is the illusion that people make decisions based on one variable. We don’t. Our decisions are based on lots of variables — so many, in fact, that often we are not entirely aware of why we make our own decisions, much less why others do.

The business model of the news media has moved away from hard reporting and toward punditry and opinion. Viewers enjoy opinion-driven content and it costs a lot less to produce than hard news. And that means the news industry has moved from factual reporting to — for all practical purposes — some form of imaginary mind reading to fill the hours.

I’ll need some examples to make my point. Below I will imagine how several headline stories about President Trump could have been reported factually without the mind reading. I include the mind reading interpretations for contrast.

Birtherism

  • Factual Report: Donald Trump exploited doubts within the Republican base about President Obama’s birth certificate to gain a political advantage. This is a common political tactic. Candidate Trump used the same strategy against Ted Cruz, who was born in Canada but is an American citizen.
  • Mind Reading: We can read Trump’s inner racist mind and we know the real reason he was involved with birtherism is to send a silent dog whistle to the racists in the Republican party.

Some illegal Mexican immigrants are criminals and some are not

  • Factual Report: Donald Trump announced his candidacy for President with a speech in which he noted that some illegal immigrants from Mexico are criminals.
  • Mind Reading: Candidate Trump secretly believes all Mexicans are rapists. We know that to be true because he said “some” illegal immigrants from Mexico he assumes are “good people.” That is a clear sign that he is thinking no one from Mexico is a good person, even though “some” is not an indication of percentage.

Charlottesville

  • Factual Report: President Trump said there were “fine people” on both sides of the Charlottesville protests. When asked to clarify if that meant the racists with tiki torches were fine people, the President clarified that he disavowed that group and was talking about non-racists who might have been there to support keeping historical Civil War statues that many believe are offensive.
  • Mind Reading: Even though President Trump clarified that he disavows the racists, we can read his inner thoughts and it is clear he thinks racists are fine people because he knows he is one.

KKK Disavowal

  • Factual Report: In a CNN interview with Jake Tapper, candidate Trump did not take the opportunity Tapper repeatedly gave him to denounce the KKK and David Duke. President Trump said he had some audio problems and didn’t hear the question properly. He clarified the next day that he does disavow the KKK and David Duke, as he has several times in the past.
  • Mind Reading: President Trump is secretly fond of the KKK and David Duke and was sending a secret dog whistle to racists. That’s why he refused to disavow them until he was badgered into it. But his disavowals were dishonest because he secretly supports them.

Judge Curiel

  • Factual Report: Candidate Trump employed a common legal strategy by questioning the objectivity of the judge for the Trump University trial. The strategy was a solid one because it biased the judge to rule favorably for Trump to avoid the appearance of bias. As it turned out, the judge scheduled the trial for after the election, which was unnecessarily generous to Trump. A more normal schedule would have put the trial before election. The potential bias Trump called out was that because of his immigration plan, Trump was deeply unpopular with Americans of Mexican heritage. Lawyers routinely consider that sort of potential bias.
  • Mind Reading: Trump is racist against people with Mexican heritage and believes they can’t be good judges.

Shithole Countries

  • Factual Reporting: In a non-public meeting with other politicians, President Trump used strong language (shithole countries) to question why our immigration policies allow in so many people from economically disadvantaged countries instead of economically advanced countries such as Norway.
  • Mind Reading: President Trump called black and brown countries “shitholes” because he is a racist.

My interpretation of what we all have watched for the past two-and-a-half years is that the anti-Trump media created the “monster” version of Trump based on mind-reading punditry. Factual reporting would not have created that impression in the public’s mind. The public had to be primed, and it had to be reminded every day by the mind-reading pundits that Trump was a monster.

The mind-reading pundits have done a horrible disservice to the country, although I suspect most were operating under the illusion they can accurately read the mind of strangers. And in one of the most successful persuasion plays in history, the anti-Trump media pinned the blame for rising racial tensions on Trump. To be fair, he made it easy. Even I graded him an F in race relations. But not because I can read his mind. I just think he could have done a lot more to persuade-away the Trump-monster illusion created by his detractors.

I started a Patreon account to fund — via micro-donations as low as one dollar — the expansion of my Periscope content on the topic of persuasion, usually about politics. Step One involves converting my Periscope videos into audio-only podcast form for greater reach. That work is in progress. I’ll work on topic indexes next, and perhaps topic summaries in text form. YouTube is a lower priority because fans already post my Periscopes there. At some point I might do that myself.

Patreon funding will motivate me to express my opinions as often as practical without worrying about the sensibilities of sponsors, advertisers, or corporate bosses. I appreciate all of you who are making this happen.

‘Sinister 2’ and Eerie Twin Facts

Sinister 2, the sequel to the 2012 sleeper hit horror film, hits theaters this week. The films stars (Shannyn Sossamon of Wayward Pines) and picks up in the aftermath of the shocking events of Sinister. Sossamon plays a protective mother of 9-year-old twin sons (real-life brothers Robert and Dartanian Sloan). The small family finds themselves in a rural house marked for death as the evil spirit of Bughuul continues to spread with frightening intensity.

The twins are used as pawns in an evil plot drummed up by the spirit of Bughuul, to wreak havoc and terror.

So I thought I’d take this opportunity to share some spooky twin facts:

• Some cultures used to believe that twins share one soul

• Other cultures viewed twins as a bad omen sent by the Gods

• Ancient societies believed that one twin is always good and the other is evil

• Dogs can tell twins apart when people can’t

• A pair of conjoined twins share a neural bridge making it

• Possible for them to literally read each other’s minds

• 40 percent of twins invent their own language

• twins are multiplying up 76 percent since 1980

For more twin facts, click here.

I sat down with stars Shannon Sossamon and James Ransone below, to discuss their take on horror films and what makes them so enticing. I also wanted to know what their favorite horror films were growing up and shared a few of my own.

Take a look.

4 Fun (And Semi-Depressing) Facts About Midlife

When I was 20, I didn’t spend much time thinking about what it would be like to be…well…old. My forties and fifties seemed like they were a helluva long way off…mostly because they were. If I’d have stopped to think about what midlife would look like, I’d probably imagine myself wearing polyester stretch pants, pantyhose with reinforced toes and that thing you wear around your neck where you push a button that alerts 911 if you “fall and can’t get up.” And sensible shoes. Lots of sensible shoes.

I’m happy to report most of my trousers still zip (they have zippers, anyway). I haven’t needed the emergency buzzer, the clapper or the grabber, although I do appreciate the value of a good pair of support hose. Even though my actual midlife experience isn’t what twenty year old me might have envisioned, I still have some fun, semi-depressing facts about midlife I’d like to share with young women everywhere.

Pay attention, bitches…I’m trying to scare the snot out of you. Why? Do I really need a reason, beyond that it’s fun?

Comfort: your underwear’s most important feature.

I’m not saying there’s no place in your life and lingerie drawer for sassy, sexy bloomers but comfort is the front runner. Support is a close second. I might still let my freak flag fly on occasion but I’m past the point where I’ll worry if hubs sees me in sensible undies. It is what it is. Thong on for now, but your time is coming. Trust me.

Dark hair sprouts randomly on your face and body.

I don’t care if your God-given hair color is platinum blonde. Stray hairs are black and crinkly (kind of like pubes.) Always. It’s a rule or something. Most often sighted on chins, these little suckers can sneak up in other regions.

I have one that appears out of freaking nowhere on my neck. One day it’s not there, the next it’s gently blowing in the breeze. A male coworker once mistook it for string. Joke was on him, it was attached. And yes, he was a hottie because the laws of the universe say that if a male must point out something unflattering, embarrassing or gross about your appearance, he must be attractive so that you can be as mortified as humanly possible.

PSA: rearview mirrors in natural light are optimum for spotting rogue hairs, so tuck a pair of tweezers in your glove box. Obviously, hair reconnaissance missions should happen when the car is not moving. Safety first, ladies. And, plucking while stopped at a light is trashy. Just don’t.

And…I could continue with a detailed description of boob hair, but I’ll just leave it there and smile, imagining the panic that little teaser may cause.

Ever-present fear of sneeze-pee fusion.

If you’ve given birth, you might remember this one fondly. If you’ve never experienced pregnancy, you’re in for a treat, my sisters. Allow me to spell it out: a sneeze, cough or even a good laugh will make you pee your pants. You never know when your bladder will fail you. You’ll remember all the times you snickered at old ladies trying to discreetly toss Poise pads in their shopping cart. You’ll wonder if the sneeze-pee fusion is karmic ass-biting payback. The answer is yes.

Your high school anthem is a classic.

There is something depressing about hearing the tunes you took your bra off to in the backseat is now considered classic rock. I’m bracing myself for the day some punk-ass fourteen year old deejay refers to anything sung by Pat Benatar as an oldie. It’ll happen. And, part of me will die a little bit.

While I might need comfier underwear and more alone time with my tweezers, life at midlife is no pity party. I (usually) have enough energy to run after my kids, run a 5K and on a good day, run circles around my younger friends. Sometimes guys still check me out. They might be trying to decide if I need help crossing the street, but hey, let me have my fantasies, m’kay?

Most of my girlfriends in their forties and fifties list sexier sex and more wisdom as perks of being this age. I think it’s down to more confidence and just no longer giving a crap what other people think.

It will happen to you, too. Katy Perry or maybe even Justin Beiber will be on the classic rock station. You will pick up that multi-pack of cotton undies and say “hmmm, these look nice and comfy.” Wait and see. For now, better stock up on those Poise pads…and be careful when you sneeze. You just never know…

What It Is Like Having an LGBT Parent: Let’s Get the Facts Straight

2015-08-14-1439579767-2135933-PaulMarisaBill.jpg

My father told me he was gay when I was 13. He said he had known ever since he was a little boy. Growing up Catholic in North Carolina during the 1960s did not present the most welcoming of circumstances for a gay man. For a lot of people, it is difficult to understand how a gay man could marry a woman and have children, but it is a lot more common than one might think. Most of my girlfriends are ecstatic when I tell them I have a gay dad; most of my guy friends are uncomfortable. For me, it’s a fact of life.

First, let me explain to you what it is not: It does not just mean I have a “cool dad” who goes shopping with me and that we get our nails done together (although, occasionally, we do).

This is what it is like: Harnessing my anger when I hear about hate crimes against the LGBT community and crying when I hear about LGBT kids committing suicide because of bullying. Biting my tongue (not often successfully,) when someone tells me that being gay, transgender, bisexual, etc. is “wrong, immoral or sick.” Watching the confused look on a person’s face when I try to explain why my dad stayed in the closet for 20 years and started a family as a straight man. Feeling hurt and frustrated when people actually believe gays set bad examples for their kids and being teased in grade school and, at that time, feeling ashamed. Have you ever tried to explain to someone that your stepdad is your father’s husband?

I fight against the ignorance because I know what it is actually like having a gay dad: wonderful. I adore watching him love my stepdad fully and wholeheartedly, no differently than two straight people would. Having a married gay dad means I get to have not only one intelligent, warm-hearted dad, but two. My dad, as a writer and advocate for the LGBT community, has become a resource and beacon of hope for lesbians and gays all around the world enduring the same struggle he did, and he encourages them to be open about who they are. As for changes in my life? I have become accepting and welcoming of all, regardless of how different they may be from me.

The relationship my father and I have today did not come easily, but it sure was worth it. Through a lot of counseling, tears and love, he became not only a better parent but a best friend. I am not sure if we became closer because he came out of the closet, but by showing his authentic self, our bond strengthened. He does not fit the so-called stereotypical “gay man,” but we certainly do enjoy our lunch dates and nights out on the town together. Our relationship is no different than any other good father and daughter bond. He still calls me every so often to make sure I am focusing on my studies, taking care of myself and staying away from bad boys and parties. (Sorry, Dad.)

Having a gay dad is so much more than meets the eye, but I would not have it any other way, and in fact I couldn’t. At forty-three years of age, I’m glad he finally figured that out too.

8 Facts That’ll Change How You View ‘How I Met Your Mother,’ According To Alyson Hannigan

For everyone who thinks they know everything about “How I Met Your Mother,” prepare to be lawyered.

Alyson Hannigan, otherwise known as Lily Aldrin, has been busy since the show ended a little more than a year ago. She’s had her hands full with being a mom, has a role in a new film called “Modern Love” and she’s even working with Ball Park’s Finest hot dogs, which she did admit, though she “usually” doesn’t try to brag, looked so good after she cooked them over a campfire that they wouldn’t even need a filter on Instagram.

During a short reprieve from her busy schedule, Hannigan took some time to chat with The Huffington Post about some behind-the-scenes stories from “HIMYM.” Prepare yourself: they might change the whole way you look at the show.

1. The cast talked about having an intervention for all of their puns.

Image: Netflix

When asked if the cast had any interventions that didn’t make the show, Hannigan said, “We talked about needing an intervention for ourselves to stop making so many puns. We would just pun for hours and hours and hours. It was great, but we were like, ‘We might have a problem,’ but we enjoyed it.”

The puns all started when a guest star mentioned the magazine Cat Fancy, Hannigan added: “We started having cat puns, and we had an afternoon of punning anything about cats. Fancy that!”

2. Alyson Hannigan’s real kid was fired from the show.

One of Hannigan’s kids was slated to play Lily and Marshall’s second child, but then she got some disappointing news. “They fired my kid from that role. She was gonna be the baby, but [producer] Carter Bays was like, ‘Nope. She’s too old,’ and she got replaced,” Hannigan said.

“I was like, ‘You fired my child. First of all that’s ageism. I don’t think you’re allowed to fire her because she’s too old,'” she joked.

3. The Cockamouse was real.

Image: PopSugar

The Cockamouse was the mysterious hybrid creature that Marshall and Lily found in their apartment, and though it seems like something someone made up, like the “South Park” monster ManBearPig, it turns out this was based on a real story.

“Yes, that is based on a story that happened to [producer] Kourtney Kang in New York in an apartment she lived in,” says Hannigan. She continued, “They were not sure if it was a cockroach or a mouse. And they’re pretty convinced it must’ve been both and it did fly away.”

To that, HuffPost responded, “Are you freaking kidding me?” Hannigan said, “I don’t think it flew out of the window, but it flew.”

4. The cast originally wanted Victoria to be the mom.
himym

“Early on, I wanted Victoria to be the mom,” Hannigan said. “I guess Carter later said had we got canceled she would’ve been the mom. But, you know, somebody great would come on [the show] and we would be like, ‘Yeah, we want her to be the mom,’ so it was sort of just like whoever was on for a long period of time. We’re like, ‘Let her be the mom. Let her.’ We just loved everybody.”

5. Some of the cast knew early on that the mom would die.

Image: Giphy

Actor Josh Radnor was told about the major “HIMYM” finale twist during Season 1 of the show and Hannigan actually found out early as well. They had to film a lot of reactions for Ted Mosby’s kids early in the series that would then air in later seasons, the actress said, and after that some “whisperings” started getting out that the series would end with the mom’s death.

“I knew that was the case,” said Hannigan. “I didn’t know who the mom was going to be, but I did know that the reason he was telling all these stories is because she passed away, which was very sweet.”

6. Producers were worried Alyson Hannigan and Cristin Milioti looked too similar.
180792549

Hannigan says the whole process of finding the right actress to play the mom was “very secretive” and caused some suspicion around set when trailers that would “never be locked” suddenly were. Hannigan says she first met the mother, Cristin Milioti, in a makeup trailer because producers wanted to see how the pair looked side by side.

“They wanted to look at us next to each other to see if they were going change her hair or something because they were a little worried that we looked similar, so I had to go stand next to her and we had some people look at us together,” she said.

7. Alyson Hannigan was the reason Lily never had a musical number.

Image: Giphy

Each of the main cast members on “HIMYM” had a musical number except for Lily — and it turns out there was a good reason for that.

“I begged them not to make me,” said Hannigan. “Yeah, singing has never been something that I wanted to do publicly. It’s actually like a phobia. I know it sounds weird, but it has always been that way. And then I find myself in these shows that want to do musicals, and I’m like, ‘Noooooo!'”

Hannigan says she has gotten better when it comes to singing, but she’s “not gonna be dropping an album anytime soon.”

8. If it was up to Jason Segel, “HIMYM” would have a Hanukkah reunion show.

A photo posted by Jason Segel (@jasonsegel) on

The actress told HuffPost she’d definitely be into a “HIMYM” reunion and that Jason Segel was actually coming up with some ideas during the finale.

“Jason was pitching some really funny specials, like a Hanukkah special and all these things with Carter. It was quite funny… Carter said we could do eight Hanukkah specials. One for each night. I’d be up for it,” she said.

In the words of Barney Stinson, that sounds pretty legen …

But, you know, somebody great would come on [the show] and we would be like, ‘Yeah, we want her to be the mom,’ so it was sort of just like whoever was on for a long period of time. We’re like, ‘Let her be the mom. Let her.’ We just loved everybody.”

5. Some of the cast knew early on that the mom would die.

8 Facts That’ll Change How You View ‘The Breakfast Club,’ According To The Cast

In the same way that people are more than just a brain, an athlete, a basket case, a princess or a criminal, “The Breakfast Club” is more than just a movie. Released 30 years ago last month, John Hughes’ classic film transcends generations and continues to reach new fans today. In fact, because of its popularity, it was recently rereleased in theaters and given a newly restored DVD and BluRay, providing the cast with an opportunity to reminisce about their time on set.

Though the movie has been around almost a third of a century now, there are still a lot of things about it that fans don’t know. In honor of “The Breakfast Club’s” 30th anniversary, HuffPost Entertainment talked to cast members Ally Sheedy, aka Allison Reynolds, and John Kapelos, aka janitor Carl Reed, about behind-the-scenes moments and stories that have never quite been told in full detail.

She’s the basket case, he’s the eyes and ears of the institution, and these are eight facts you might not know:

1. Judd Nelson wasn’t almost fired JUST for picking on Molly Ringwald. He also couldn’t stay in the shots.

By now you may have heard that Nelson, who played the volatile John Bender, was nearly let go from the film. Though his picking on Ringwald was a large part of that, Sheedy explained to HuffPost Entertainment that there was more to the story.

“Judd kind of does this very free-ranging thing with his body. You can see it in the movie,” said Sheedy. “He’s not great at hitting marks, and he wanted to move around and stuff, and I think they were having trouble keeping him in shot.”

The story goes that the cast went to Hughes and pleaded with him to keep Nelson on the project. They also talked to Nelson about how he could help himself out. “If I remember correctly, we all talked to him. The four of us. And I think my thing about it was just focus, just focus, just focus,” said Sheedy.

2. The topless scene wasn’t the only scandalous moment removed. There was also a risque scene involving “MILFs.”

Image: Giphy

Sheedy confirmed that a topless scene involving a swimming teacher was cut out of the film, saying: “I think John [Hughes] didn’t want to have it in the movie. I think he thought it didn’t really work for him.”

Kapelos later added to the story, telling HuffPost that there was more to the scandalous moment. “I think there was also a scene with a bunch of MILFs or middle-aged cougar women who were doing an aerobics class in the gym and were really letting it go. I think there was a lascivious moment there,” he said. “But you know… it’s like putting a bow on an elephant. It just doesn’t belong there.”

3. Rick Moranis, who was originally cast as the janitor, didn’t just play the part as a Russian. He was also doing something suggestive with his keys.

56481227

Moranis, who’d appeared in “Ghostbusters” the year before, was originally cast to play the janitor in “The Breakfast Club,” and Sheedy even says she was “a little star struck” by him while filming. Things didn’t work out, of course, and Moranis was soon replaced by Kapelos.

According to the script, the janitor is meant to be a former student of the high school, as indicated by his picture in the case at the beginning of the film. But when it came to Moranis’ portrayal, Kapelos said the actor and producers didn’t have “a meeting of the creative minds at that moment.”

Kapelos pictured (middle) at the beginning of the film. (Image: MentalFloss)

“From what I was told,” said Kapelos, “he wanted to play the character as a Russian with gold teeth and keys between his legs, playing with it provocatively… and so it’s like, it wasn’t organic, I guess is putting it politely and correctly.”

4. No, Ally Sheedy did not really use her dandruff as an art project.

tv show gifs
Image: MakeAGif/MTV

Though it’s reported that many scenes in the film were improvised, the scene where Allison Reynolds draws in the library isn’t one of them.

Sheedy explains the scene was always in the film, and though she doesn’t know who actually drew the picture, she did set the record straight on one detail. The actress explained that dandruff she scratched out of her hair wasn’t actually dandruff or even Parmesan cheese as previously thought. “I think it was potato flakes of some kind,” Sheedy said.

5. There’s a dark answer to Judd Nelson’s question, “How does one become a janitor?”

Image: Giphy

A memorable moment happens when John Bender asks Kapelos’ character “how one becomes a janitor.” Though it’s clear Bender is just doing it to irk him, it turns out there was an answer to the question after all.

“Really? You want to know?” laughed Kapelos when HuffPost Entertainment repeated Bender’s question. The actor then went into his character’s dark history, saying: “You have to have your heart broken by your teenage sweetheart in your third year of university when you’re doing a great football scholarship. Drop out. Lose her heart. Lose her affection. Make sure her father hates you even more and will never include you in his future plans. Even if you try to make up to her. And then you get a job at your old high school as a janitor, and you try to lick your wounds. That’s how you become a janitor. That’s Carl’s pathetic backstory.”

6. A cut scene shows that Allison wasn’t smoking pot with the others because she was actually off somewhere singing.

A variety of scenes from the movie were cut from the final film, and Sheedy recalled one that was a big moment for her character.

“John [Hughes] let me shoot something with Allison alone in the audiovisual tiny room, singing a capella,” she told HuffPost. “That was something I just came up with. Singing a little song to herself. And that was, for me, the emotional transition that was when they were smoking pot.”

“She sang the song to herself and then she walked out of the room and just joined the group,” Sheedy went on. “So that wasn’t in the script, and he actually let me shoot it. He shot it twice, and then afterwards said that everybody sort of thought it was a little bit too weird.”

7. Principal Vernon’s anger was totally real.

Image: BavaTuesdays

Hughes allowed a lot of improvisation in the movie, and one moment that made it into the film was the conversation between Carl and Paul Gleason’s character, Principal Richard Vernon, after the janitor catches Vernon going through confidential files.

“John Hughes just told me before the take, ‘Cut him off and ask him for 50 bucks.’ So I did,” said Kapelos. “And if you see the movie again, take a look at Paul’s reaction, because it’s real. He was really [ticked off]. And after John Hughes yelled ‘cut,’ it got a little funky for a bit. He was like, ‘Really?’ He got annoyed. We got the take on that one.”

8. Kapelos told Emilio Estevez that if he’d been present for Martin Sheen’s 1977 heart attack, he would have just let it happen… not knowing that Sheen was Estevez’s father.

carl

Though he explained that no one has really told the story correctly, Kapelos says that one day on set he did call out Estevez and Nelson for goofing off while he was shooting a scene. He told HuffPost: “I’m on a movie set, and I’m scared, you know, shitless. I want to do well. They’re trying to make me crack up. They’re goofing off.”

To get Estevez and Nelson to stop, Kapelos told them: “You guys would’ve been great if you were on the set of ‘Apocalypse Now’ with Martin Sheen, and he goes in front of you and starts having his heart attack, and you’re not believing he’s in trouble, and he’s just wincing and moaning in pain and ripping at his chest and you guys would just sit there and let him have his heart attack, right?”

“In other words,” Kapelos told HuffPost, “I was saying, ‘Hey, I’m up here struggling. I’m in pain, and you guys are just letting me wither on the vine.'”

That’s not how Estevez took it, though. “All of a sudden Emilio’s face goes white. Like, I’m telling you, expressionless and white. And everybody’s looking at me like I just shot the pope.” Hughes told Kapelos that Estevez was Sheen’s son, and though Kapelos was “flummoxed” and apologetic, it was too late. Estevez never accepted an apology. “The garage door was going down,” said Kapelos. “That’s all Emilio wrote.”

Bonus trivia: Ally Sheedy doesn’t actually eat breakfast.

Image: Giphy

She’s a member of “The Breakfast Club,” but Sheedy says breakfast isn’t actually her thing. “I never, ever eat it. Ever,” she told HuffPost. “I really just like to get that caffeine going in the morning and just have that buzz as long as possible.”

Happy anniversary, “Breakfast Club.” Here’s to another 30 years!

3 Surprising Facts About Family Today

The world and our lives are changing at speeds never before experienced. The family, like everything else, has been doing its own kind of changing.

There are three facts about today’s family that many of you may not know about.

1. The traditional Mom and Dad in the house raising the kids no longer
represent the majority of families in the U.S. As of 2014, the majority of families are made up of stepfamilies, singles and families living together outside of marriage.

2. Two out of three people have a step-relative. The Pew Research Center determined in 2014, 40 percent of married couples with children are stepcouples. In comparison, only 13 percent of families in 1960 were stepfamilies.

3. The divorce rate among remarriages that involve children is high: 62-74 percent .

Surprising, right?

You wouldn’t know about this new shift in the family by watching mainstream TV and movies. The nuclear family is often presented as the norm although that’s changing with shows like, “Modern Family.” Yet, even in this show, the stepfather (Jay Pritchett) doesn’t have to worry about walking on his stepson’s father’s toes because the father lives out of the country.

Gloria is happily accepted by her new husband’s adult children and doesn’t have the challenges most stepmothers have. Today’s modern stepfamily usually paints a much more complex picture. Biological parents who are both very involved and often clash about parenting styles, stepparents who try to parent reluctant kids and kids who are going back and forth between two homes, trying to figure the whole thing out. The list is endless.

Unfortunately, many family therapists treat second families like first families. Given the biological differences in combined families and all the moving parts that don’t exist in first families, this is a colossal mistake.

Longitudinal studies that focus on stepfamilies are pathetically sparse but we know enough to say that children almost always naturally feel more loyal to their biological parents.

As a therapist who specializes in working with stepfamilies (whether the adults are married, living together or dating) I’ve witnessed the many painful complications these families experience. Simply put, it’s not easy to be in a stepfamily. Whether you’re the kid that has to go back and forth between two homes, the parents who have to split their parenting time 50/50, or the stepparent who comes in to a ready-made system.

The jury is still out about how this new shift in family composition will ultimately impact the culture. One thing we know for sure is that just because a family becomes instant, an instant family it does not make.

“Blended” family myths, stepparents who parent before making solid relationships with their stepkids (which more often than not takes years), poor boundaries between exes, too much contact with exes, not giving the kids enough time to adjust to the new family, stepparents, especially stepmoms, who are treated like yesterday’s news…all conspire to make these families very difficult to be a part of.

Friends and family don’t help. One complaint from a stepparent, a complaint that would be normal and natural coming from the mouth of a biological parent, is met with, “You knew it was a package deal.” In order words, put up or shut up. In other words, not helpful.

Education and support for all stepfamily members is key, not only for these combined families, but society as well.

The Glass Can Be Half Full

Stepfamilies don’t need to be doomed before the bride and groom say, “I do.” There are many ways to work towards having a healthy remarriage and combined family. Here are just a few tips to get started:

1. All members of the new stepfamily need to be given time to adjust to new people and new dynamics. This often takes 4-6 years. The Brady Bunch was a TV show, not a model for stepfamilies.

2. Get rid of the term” blended” families. What does that even mean? It creates an unrealistic expectation and using the term “stepfamily” works just fine.

3. Stepparents, especially stepmoms, need to stop being demonized and minimized. The new couple should operate as a team with the biological parent being the disciplinarian when possible.

4. Parents need to find partners who support rather than compete with their relationships with their children.

5. Children need to be prioritized appropriately and with patience, when it comes to accepting the new members of their family, especially their new stepparent.

The nature of life is change and we don’t need to be afraid of this new face of the American family. We just need to know how to adjust and adapt to the diversity, different households and family units that currently make up contemporary family life.

When You Look At The ‘Serial’ Facts, New Interview With Key Witness Is Totally Frustrating

Fans of “Serial” were given a bit of an epilogue on Monday: Jay Wilds, the state’s key witness in its case against Adnan Syed, agreed to an on-the-record interview. He spoke with The Intercept’s Natasha Vargas-Cooper about his version of events on the day Baltimore-area teenager Hae Min Lee was killed in 1999. (“Serial” host Sarah Koenig attempted, but failed, to convince Wilds to open up on the podcast.)

In the new interview, Wilds explained his changing accounts of what happened as attempts to spare friends and family — namely, the grandmother he lived with — from any involvement in the case. Wilds told Vargas-Cooper that he didn’t trust the police at the time. Drug law enforcement was harsh, he explained, and he “had a lot more on the line than just a few bags of weed.”

But the fact that Wilds’ story shifted so much has many “Serial” fans saying he wasn’t ever a credible witness. Now he’s given us a whole new timeline of the supposed events of that day. Here’s that new story compared to the facts we know.

Jay says: He went to the mall alone.
In Wilds’ newest version of events, Adnan was in his car with Jay instead of being at his last period of school. Jay suggested going to the mall to find a present for Stephanie, but Adnan said he had to “go do something,” and told Jay to drop him at school, letting Jay borrow his car and phone.

We know: At trial, Jay said he went shopping with Adnan.
Jay testified at the second trial that he and Adnan actually went to the mall together, and that Jay dropped Adnan off at school afterward, around 1 p.m. Adnan’s last period Psychology teacher made a note that Adnan arrived to class late, at 1:27 p.m. Adnan always claimed he never went to the mall with Jay.

people map serial

Jay says: He went to Jenn’s house.
Jay told The Intercept he remembered going over to his friend Jenn’s to hang out after leaving the mall.

We know: At trial, Jay and Jenn both said he went to her house that afternoon.
Adnan’s phone log also documents a couple of calls to Jenn’s house, at 12:07 p.m. and 12:41 p.m., which make sense if Jay had the phone and wanted to see who was home. There are also a few incoming calls at this point, but unfortunately, the records don’t show us who they came from.

serial podcast map

Jay says: Adnan probably wasn’t with Hae’s car at Best Buy.
Wilds told Vargas-Cooper that Adnan called him, said he killed Hae, and requested pick-up from Best Buy. Wilds then remembered driving in Adnan’s car to Best Buy, where he found Adnan (who wasn’t with any car). Adnan apparently told Jay he killed Hae in her car, which was somewhere around, but Jay was doubtful — he thought the car was somewhere else. At this point, it’s between 3 and 4 p.m.

We know: At trial, the “trunk pop” moment allegedly happened at Best Buy.
The state alleged that Adnan’s “pick-up” call occurred at 2:36 p.m. and, according to the log, lasted just five seconds. While Jay had claimed to first lay eyes on Hae’s body in a few different spots in the weeks and months after Hae’s disappearance, he testified that the real “trunk pop” moment happened there in the Best Buy parking lot. So, Jay is now saying that what he alleged at the second trial — Adnan was with Hae’s car and he showed Jay her body at Best Buy — didn’t happen.

The call log, though, could maybe support part of Jay’s new timeline. Between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m., there are outgoing calls made to Jay’s friend Jenn, Adnan’s friend Nisha, and two other friends (Phil and Patrick). All of these ping towers are near Best Buy, Koenig states in Episode 5.

call log serial

Jay says: He and Adnan hung out at Cathy’s.
At this point, Jay apparently drove himself and Adnan over to Cathy’s to smoke. Adnan received a call from the police regarding Hae’s disappearance and got “all panicky,” so Jay suggested they separate. Adnan took his own car, and Jay got home another way.

We know: At trial, lot more happened before Cathy’s.
Before going over to Cathy’s, Jay said that he and Adnan dropped Hae’s car at the I-70 Park and Ride. Now, he doesn’t mention this at all, because he said he wasn’t sure where Hae’s car was at the time. He also doesn’t mention looking to buy weed in Forest Park, which he testified to doing after ditching the car, or dropping Adnan at track practice, which Adnan claimed to have attended (although his coach wasn’t able to confirm). But at 5:38 p.m., when Adnan is supposed to be at track practice, a call placed to Adnan’s friend Krista pings a tower “sort of where” Hae’s car ends up, Koenig says in Episode 5.

The part about Cathy’s apartment is pretty undisputed, though — Jay, Cathy and Adnan all acknowledge being there that evening. Officer Adcock also testified that he was probably the 6:24 p.m. incoming call on Adnan’s cellphone log, which would have been during that time.

haes note serial

Jay says: The “trunk pop” happened outside his grandmother’s house.
Back at his grandmother’s house trying to collect himself, Jay told The Intercept he received a call from Adnan, who was either outside right then or on his way over. Adnan apparently opened the trunk of Hae’s car and showed Jay her body. “She looked kinda purple,” he said. Adnan then threatened to expose Jay’s drug dealing operation if he didn’t help bury Hae.

We know: At trial, it allegedly happened at Best Buy. (Again.)
Jay testified that moment happened hours earlier at a completely different location. There is no call to Jay on Adnan’s phone log in the evening. (Although he could have used a different phone.)

serial podcast

Jay says: Adnan buried the body at midnight.
Several hours later — or “closer to midnight” — Jay said Adnan reappeared in his own car, and drove the two of them to Leakin Park with some “gardening tools” from Jay’s grandmother’s house.

We know: Phone records suggest it happened hours earlier.
Adnan’s cell phone did ping towers near Leakin Park — but not around midnight. Two incoming calls (we can’t be sure who they were from) originated from the park at 7:09 p.m. and 7:16 p.m., suggesting whoever had Adnan’s cell phone was, in fact, there around that time.

leakin park serial

Jay says: He didn’t help bury the body.
Jay helped dig the hole for about 40 minutes, he told Vargas-Cooper, but refused to actually move the body. He was then asked to wait while Adnan drove Hae’s car, which was parked in a nearby neighborhood, to the burial site. It took about 45 minutes for Adnan to finish burying Hae, according to Jay. Afterward, Adnan dumped Hae’s car where it was later found behind some row houses and finally left in his own car, dropping Jay back home.

We know: At trial, Jay says they both buried Hae.
Jay testifies that he both helped dig the hole in Leakin Park and helped bury the body. He also stated that Adnan drove Hae’s car from the I-70 Park and Ride to a nearby McDonald’s, where Jay was waiting in Adnan’s car. There is no mention of McDonald’s or, again, the Park and Ride, in Jay’s new timeline.

##

In addition to conflicting his previous accounts, Jay’s new timeline leaves a lot of lingering questions:

Why were Jay and Adnan driving around so desperately looking to buy weed, as Jay testified at trial, if Jay himself was supposedly a dealer with a big stash at his grandmother’s house? Who paged Jay’s friend Jenn twice around 8 p.m. that night?

Read part one of the interview here, and part two here. Part three is scheduled to be published on Wednesday.

5 Facts You Didn’t Know About Robin Williams

“You’re only given a little spark of madness. You mustn’t lose it.”

Robin Williams lived an amazing life before his death at the age of 63. In the beginning of his career, Williams struggled as a street mime in front of New York’s Museum of Modern Art; by the end, he was the type of performer who could lift the spirits of a long-time friend in the hospital to our nation’s troops in Afghanistan, Iraq and Kuwait and everyone in between. Moreover, once Williams reached the top, he remembered to look back on where he came from: The actor famously helped Jessica Chastain become the first person in her family to go to college, funding her full-ride scholarship to Juilliard when she was just starting out herself. There’s certainly no doubt Williams will be missed by both fans and colleagues. Below are some of the little known moments of Williams’ inspiring career.

1. Robin Williams improvised most of Genie for “Aladdin.”

TK TK gifs

Apparently, the Academy Awards rejected the bid for “Aladdin” in the Best Adapted Screenplay category because so much of Williams role ended up being improvised. According to producer and director John Musker, Williams ended up improvising about 70 impressions to be used in the film as well. In a Reddit AMA, Williams explained:

Initially they came in and I was just doing the scripted lines and I asked ‘Do you mind if I try something?’ and then 18 hours of recording later, they had the genie. I just started playing, and they said “just go with it, go with it, go with it.” So I improvised the character. I think that in the end, there were something like 40 different voices that I did for that role.

Williams was known for improvising most of his iconic roles in some way or another.

2. Robin Williams dressed in scrubs and surprised his friend Christopher Reeve in the hospital following his career-ending accident.

Reeve and Williams became good friends when they both attended The Juilliard School together. Williams claimed at the time that Reeve was “literally feeding me because I don’t think I literally had money for food or my student loan hadn’t come in yet, and he would share his food with me.” In his book, “Still Me,” Reeve wrote about Williams visiting him in the hospital:

Then, at an especially bleak moment, the door flew open and in hurried a squat fellow with a blue scrub hat and a yellow surgical gown and glasses, speaking in a Russian accent. He announced that he was my proctologist, and that he had to examine me immediately…it was Robin Williams…for the first time since the accident, I laughed. My old friend had helped me know that somehow I was going to be okay.

Williams later surprised Sharon Osbourne in a similar way after she was diagnosed with cancer.

3. During the filming of “Schindler’s List,” Robin Williams called Steven Spielberg to tell him jokes and lift his spirits.

robin williams spielberg

Spielberg called these “comic care packages over the telephone.”

In his Reddit AMA, Williams explained:

I think I only called him once, maybe twice. I called him when I was representing People for the Valdheimers Association. A society devoted to helping raise money to help older Germans who had forgotten everything before 1945. I remember him laughing and going ‘thank you.’

4. In high school, Robin Williams was voted by his classmates as the “Least Likely To Succeed.”

robin williams

Williams attended Redwood High School in California where, during his senior year, he was voted both “the funniest and least likely to succeed.”

Later in life, Williams would win five Grammys, two Emmys and an Academy Award.

5. Robin Williams favorite childhood book was “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe,” which he’d read to his kids.

robin williams zelda

Here is Williams’ description of reading his favorite book from childhood to his kids:

Growing up, it was The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe – I would read the whole C.S. Lewis series out loud to my kids. I was once reading to Zelda, and she said “don’t do any voices. Just read it as yourself.” So I did, I just read it straight, and she said ‘that’s better.’

Cat People Way More Likely To Date Dog People Than Vice Versa. Plus Other Fun Facts About Pets And Dating

If you’re single and ready to mingle, run to your local animal shelter. Now.

A survey by Match.com and PetSmart Charities released last month shows that the rumors are true — man’s best friend might also be man’s best wingman. And getting your pet from a shelter doesn’t hurt, either.

According to the survey, 59 percent of respondents would perceive their date as more attractive if they found out he or she had adopted, rather than bought, their pet. What’s more, 25 percent of women have been more attracted to someone because of their pet, and almost half put faith in their dog’s judgement of their dates!

But things get a little touchy when it comes to mixing cat people with dog people. While those who fancy felines are much more open to the idea — 97 percent of cat owners would have a relationship with a “dog person” — just 66 percent of dog owners would be open to being more than friends with a cat person. Ouch.

Here are a few other eye-opening results from the survey:

  • Men are four times more likely to use their pets to attract a potential date.
  • Nearly six out of 10 men think their date’s choice in pets says a lot about their personality.
  • 35 percent of single women have been more attracted to someone because of their pet.
