How famous bands chose their names

The history of rock and roll is filled with legendary stories of how songs were written or inspired (hello there, "Layla") and even more legendary myths of the antics of bands on tour or in the studio. However, before any of those bands could pen a song that ended up in steady rotation on your local classic rock station, break download records or become mythic figures, they needed something everyone and everything needs: a name. This is the story of several such bands and artists.

Guess What Famous Baby Mama Was Called Out About Hypocritical Matt Barnes-Derek Fisher Comments?

Photo via Kim Porter’s Instagram

Everyone has had something to say about the recent incident of Matt Barnes driving 95 miles to assault Derek Fisher, but it seems like everyone shouldn’t have an opinion, or some definitely shouldn’t express it. Fans recently roasted one of Diddy’s baby mamas, Kim Porter, as she offered her opinion on the situation. She basically said you shouldn’t sleep with a close friend or associate’s ex. Fans wasted no time in the comments “reminding” Kim that she was Diddy’s first baby mama Misa Hylton’s friend, and she was allegedly sleeping on Puff & Misa’s couch when her an Al B. Sure! broke up. To take it a step further they “reminded” Kim that Diddy and Al B. Sure! were very close and worked on music together. Well if all of this is the case, isn’t that the pot calling the kettle……..

A coming-of-age story about a 15-year-old boy hitting the road with an up-and-coming rock band in the early 1970s. Elaine Miller is a bright, loving, but strict single parent whose distrust of rock music and fears about drug use have helped to drive a wedge between herself and her two children, Anita, and William. William makes something of his love of rock & roll by writing album reviews for a local underground newspaper. William's work attracts the attention of Lester Bangs, editor of renegade rock magazine Creem, who takes William under his wing and gives him his first professional writing assignment – covering a Black Sabbath concert. While William is unable to score an interview with the headliners, the opening act, Stillwater, are more than happy to chat with a reporter, even if he's still too young to drive, and William's piece on the group in Creem gains him a new admirer in Ben Fong-Torres, an editor at Rolling Stone. Torres offers William an assignment for a 3,000-word cover story on Stillwater, and over the objections of his mother, and after some stern advice from Bangs, Williams joins Stillwater on tour, where he becomes friendly with guitarist Russell Hammond and singer Jeff Bebe. William also becomes enamored of Penny Lane, a groupie traveling with the band who is no older than William, but is deeply involved with Russell.

Apparently, All the Best New Male Models Have Famous Parents

Photo: Gianni Pucci / Indigitalimages.com

Still reeling in the “who’s that guy?” moment from the Chanel fall 2015 couture catwalk last week, when a bleach-blond, Greco-Roman-jawed man accompanied Julianne Moore down the runway? Well, allow us to enlighten you: That was none other than Gabriel-Kane Day-Lewis, yes, that Day-Lewis, as in son of Daniel Day-Lewis. How funny! You’re thinking, What a small world! But then consider that only a few weeks earlier, beloved thespian (and sometime Prada campaign sitter) Gary Oldman’s son, Charlie, prowled the runway for Saint Laurent. And they aren’t the only ones with famous last names who are now posing pretty and walking tough: Brooklyn Beckham, son of David and Victoria Beckham, has fronted a campaign for Polish label Reserved, while Jack Kilmer (son of Val) and Dylan Brosnan (son of Pierce) have joined Hedi Slimane’s Saint Laurent clan, while Patrick Schwarzenegger has appeared for Tom Ford’s eyewear campaign (alongside another celeb kid: Gigi Hadid) and Rafferty Law (son of Jude), walked for DKNY Men’s.

And beyond the blockbuster makers, descendants of Vogue-gracing models are included as well: Take it from Steven Meisel–favorite Nyima Ward, the long-locked brooding offspring of nineties model Trish Goff, who walked Anna Sui. One thing’s for certain, with New York Men’s Fashion Week kicking off today, this won’t be the last of famous faces to watch on the runway—and we’re not done hoping for a proud Papa sighting, or two.

25 Famous Women On The Best Advice They’ve Ever Given — Or Received

women

This post originally appeared on The Cut.
By The Cut Staff

This week, the Cut is talking advice — the good, the bad, the weird, and the pieces of it you really wish you’d taken. Here, 25 smart women share their most valuable tidbits.

Greta Gerwig: “Don’t drink all the drinks just because they’re free!”

Julia Stiles: “Comparison is the thief of joy.”

Mindy Kaling: “My mom always said, ‘You should judge your relationship not by how a guy makes you feel when you’re with him, but by how he makes you feel when you’re not with him.'”

Kelly Ripa: “Somebody’s negativity dumped on you is a bigger commentary on how they feel about themselves than you. Jessica Seinfeld taught me that.”

Susan Sarandon: “You can always forgive yourself or apologize for things you do, but you can’t ever work through things you wish you’d done and you didn’t.”

Judy Greer: “My mom told me not to shit where you eat, which a lot of people say, but when your mom says that to you as you’re packing up your car to go away to college, it really sticks.”

Rosie Perez: “My aunt used to say, ‘Rosie, I’m so depressed, but tomorrow’s another fuckin’ day, eh?'”

Helen Mirren: “My headmistress told me not to be afraid of being afraid.”

Jill Soloway: “Speak! It’s a revolution for women to have voices.”

Ali Wentworth: “Don’t worry about working out until it’s more about preventing death and less about what you look like.”

Gayle King: “Maya Angelou said, ‘When people show you who they are, believe them the first time.'”

Sandra Oh: “It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. I’ve got to tell you, that’s serviced me so many times. It’s big-picture thinking.”

Liv Tyler: “Make eye contact, stop to really look someone in the eye. My grandmother taught me that.”

Marilyn Minter: “Make envy your enemy.”

Robin Roberts: “Don’t play a supporting role in your own life.”

Tavi Gevinson: “‘Don’t date anyone you wouldn’t want to be,’ from the writer Kate Bornstein.”

Ava DuVernay: “Oprah told me that everything that happens to you is not happening to you, it’s happening for you.”

Dana Delany: “Trust your instincts — but the caveat is you don’t usually know what those are until you’re much older.”

Sandra Bernhard: “When I was starting off, my mentor Paul Mooney said, ‘Bernhard, shed your skin.’ In other words, get closer to who you really are as a performer. But I think it’s good advice for people in life.”

Veronica Roth: “My mom used to tell me, ‘Other people are not thinking about you as much as you are.'”

Laverne Cox: “I think for trans folks, the struggle is, even as we want to transition and be better versions of ourselves, we have to love who we are today.”

Rene Russo: “You have to maneuver in this world. You have to look at another person and go, ‘What is it they need?’ You can use that to ultimately get what you want.”

Chita Rivera: “Take advantage of every opportunity that comes your way, with grace and humility. Be a sponge — and absorb and learn.”

Marin Ireland: “Fail better. Try again, fail again, fail better.”

Aidy Bryant: “Just chill ’til you die, pretty much.”

After Sally Mann’s Memoir, a New Look at Her Most Famous Photographs

Photo: Sally Mann

What else is there to see in a photograph that’s been talked about so endlessly you can picture it in your mind? This week, a month after the release of Sally Mann’s extraordinary artist’s memoir, Hold Still, and 23 years after the initial publication of Immediate Family, arrives an expanded, paper edition of the book that catapulted her career into the realm of critically lauded and publicly debated celebrity. You know the photographs, or you know of them: the practically rhapsodic images of her three children during carefree summers spent in remote corners of their Virginia farm, in the woods, down by the river; dreamy and idyllic even in their most searing moments, the “iconic picture on the cover of the three children standing there, glaring out at the world,” as Mann has described it; or streaked with dirt and blood and swollen with bug bites, the small accidents of play. All were made on a view camera in black-and-white film and luminously printed (Mann was one of the country’s foremost darkroom printers back then and still prints her work), but what has threatened to eclipse the images themselves are not the thousand words they’re supposedly worth, but the thousands and thousands of words that have been written about them since by detractors who could not get past the fact that the children were sometimes shown wearing little or no clothes.

Sally Mann, Torn Jeans, 1990

In her memoir, Mann thoughtfully addresses the controversy, and the aftermath, from the legitimately creepy stalkers the photos drew to the FBI agent who encouraged her to believe in her own work, assuring her that there are people who “get aroused by shoes, too. I don’t think there is anything you can take a picture of that doesn’t arouse somebody.” The children, as children from a very early age instinctively understand the difference between “real” and “pretend,” got it, they were active participants. But for the literal-minded adults of the world, Mann makes a clear distinction between the real-life Jessie, Emmett, and Virginia, and her representations of them: “The fact is,” Mann writes of the pictures, “that these are not my children; they are figures on silvery paper slivered out of time. . . . These are not my children with ice in their veins, these are not my children at all; these are children in a photograph.”

Even as her sales rose, Mann drew fire from Richard B. Woodward in The New York Times Magazine in an article with the seemingly incongruous headline “The Disturbing Photography of Sally Mann”; from Raymond Sokolov in The Wall Street Journal, which ludicrously placed black bars crossing out parts of her daughter Virginia’s body; from feminist author Mary Gordon. Last month Terry Gross devoted nearly half of her Fresh Air interview with Mann to quizzing her about the alleged “eroticizing” of her children. (Mann to Gross: “Well, I guess that’s the key word. I mean, I don’t feel they’re eroticized, so we can agree to disagree on that, I guess.”) It was a shame that their conversation left little time to address the rest of the book, which is lyrical and fascinating and revealing on a number of levels, vividly recounting Mann’s “near-feral” childhood on the same land where she would later photograph her children; her rebellious boarding school years and her first photographs, falling in love and an early, bohemian-rural married life, the tragic murder-suicide of her husband’s parents, stories of her family and the African-American nurse who largely raised her, her close friendships with artists like Cy Twombly, her deep attachment to the South and her frank consideration of its troubled, racist history (she is forever haunted by the death of Emmett Till).

One of the most compelling, and perhaps surprising, threads of the book is Mann’s belief that photographs destroy actual memory. “I am convinced that the reason I can remember him so clearly and in such detail is because I have so few pictures of him,” she writes of Twombly. “When we outsource that work to the camera, our ability to remember is diminished and what memories we have are impoverished.”

Sally Mann, The Ditch, 1987

While a photograph can diminish a memory by replacing it with an image, it can also invoke a larger memory through the power of suggestion. There are, I think, two kinds of iconic photographs: the one so resonant it becomes the mind’s default image of a place and time, be it Marilyn Monroe standing over the subway grate with her dress blowing up around her; the first walk on the moon; the Viet Cong prisoner shot on the street in Saigon. Then there is the iconic photograph that so masterfully captures a time and place that it exists outside of those realms. Universal, symbolic, even mythic, it allows the viewer to fully enter the photograph, to project their own experience into the world it depicts.

When Mann refers to her own photographs as iconic, that’s what she’s talking about. It’s that which makes the experience of her photographs most remarkable, seen fresh, and it’s that which allows them to loom larger than the words once attached to them. That river may be in Virginia, but it could be anywhere; it may have been the late eighties, but these could be from any era, really—the clothes (and there are clothes more often than not) echo the eighties in one photograph, recall Dorothea Lange in the next. And the photos may show Emmett, Jessie, and Virginia Mann, but they are just as much of Sally Mann and her own childhood self. They could be, after all, just as much of mine.

As a child in North Carolina, around the same time that Sally Mann’s kids were roaming their Virginia woods, my sister and our four best friends spent half the summer slipping through the neighbors’ backyards, cutting a path down to a winding creek. We climbed through the ravine and waded the streams, we collected fallen branches and sticks and made forts and makeshift bridges; we concocted elaborate games of pretend, casting ourselves in character; single-file, we walked through a dark, echoey tunnel that cut underneath a highway and fed into the river. It didn’t matter what we were wearing, or if we were wearing anything at all, because we had escaped the reach of our parents; there was no one to see us. Lords of the flies, we were free. When I think of those afternoons now, I see them in color and in black-and-white; I see them as an all-girl version of Stand By Me, of Bridge to Terabithia, of Justine Kurland’s runaway girl photographs, and, yes, of Sally Mann’s Immediate Family. And I superimpose images from books and movies and pictures because I have no visual record beyond what I can conjure in my head.

“Did I reassess the pictures?” Mann said on Fresh Air. “Did I wish I could snatch them back and bundle them back into the film boxes and never have put them out? Not really.” Looking at Immediate Family again now, I am glad. Not because that means I have pictures of her children, but because that means I have a picture of myself.

The Famous Quote I Never Said

You might have seen a quote on the Internet that is mistakenly attributed to me. It looks like this:

“Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Design is knowing which ones to keep.” – Scott Adams

People like that quote so much that they have turned it into countless colorful posters and put it on products. A search for that quote got 451,000 hits.

But I never said it.

Nor do I agree with it. It is literally the opposite of my opinion.

What I did once say, years ago, in one of my books (I forget which one), is this:

“Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes. Art is knowing which ones to keep.”

You’ll see lots of versions of that quote floating around the Internet too (see a few in the image above), but many of the newer ones have been altered from “art” to “design.”

My problem with the altered quote (aside from creating a misleading history) is that design is largely rules-based. Art is not, or at least not so much. When I hire a designer, I want someone who has the training and experience to know what will work for a particular commercial purpose. They should be thinking about how the message is delivered, how the human brain processes ideas, what part of the design has the button you want users to press, and so on.

That is pretty much the direct opposite of art. So putting design in that quote is an attempt to (elevate?) design to art, as if art is somehow more important.

Personally, I think good design that affects millions of people is more important than art than hangs in one room. But I’m not trying to pick a winner. All I’m saying is that the famous quote about design, mistakenly attributed to me, doesn’t make sense.

Today’s post has two objectives:

1. Correct the record on what I said, for historical purposes.

2. Show you how common it is for inaccurate quotes to be attributed to famous people in ways you could not imagine. I have been misquoted in this fashion – where the entire meaning is changed – perhaps a hundred times in my career.

Would you have guessed that I didn’t say the quote most often attributed to me, and that I don’t even agree with it? Probably not. By its nature, it is hard to believe.

Just remember that 98% of everything you read on the Internet is bullshit. The other 2% is accurate by accident.

You can misquote me on that.

Barely Famous It Girls Sara and Erin Foster on How a “Reality Star” Does L.A.

Sara and Erin Foster Barely Famous

Heading to L.A. anytime soon? (Or just want to look like you are?) Let stylish sisters Erin and Sara Foster be your guide. After all, Erin, a comedy writer, and Sara, an actress, are born-and-bred Californians, with a family tree that includes Gigi Hadid and Brody Jenner and a brand new VH1 satirical comedy series, Barely Famous, that pokes fun at reality TV—you really can’t get more L.A. than that.

The sisters may deviate between classic film alliances—Erin holds a candle for Julie Delpy in Before Sunrise, while Sara tends toward Diane Keaton’s repeated turns for Woody Allen—but they both lay claim to an inherently California girl aesthetic. “I like to channel my inner Candice Swanepoel and attempt to be ‘hippie chic,’ ” Sara says. She favors flat sandals (“I know I look better in a heel, but I really only wear Birkenstocks and Havaianas”) and Re/Dun’s high-waisted light-wash denim, while Erin prefers off-duty classics like men’s button-down shirts, Levi’s cutoffs, and Converse, citing coconut oil as her must-have beauty product. (“Our mom is 64 and never tried Botox and doesn’t even get facials; all she uses is coconut oil on her face and body. So my sisters and I decided to get on that train,” says Sara.) And the two might have different festivals in mind this summer—Sara’s got her sights set on Burning Man, Erin on Stagecoach—but when it comes to their hometown, they have a singularly cool itinerary to share. Here, their five favorite spots, and how to look the part when you arrive.

This Is What Happens When Art Students Recreate Famous Nude Masterpieces (NSFW)

“Nudes are hot right now,” photographer Matthew Leifheitr mused in an email exchange with HuffPost. Leifheitr has many titles, among them VICE photo editor and editor-in-chief of MATTE Magazine. Recently, he’s taken on a faculty position at the School of Visual Arts in New York City, a role that’s allowed him to better explore the beautiful and nefarious world of naked art.

AFTER HENRI MATISSE. Photo by Noah Boskey, Erin Carr, Emma Castelbolognesi, Crystelle Colucci, Alberto Inamagua, and Allison Schaller.

The fruits of his labor are currently on view at SVA, in a pop-up exhibition titled “Artsy Nudes.” For the project, he gave his participating students a simple prompt: choose any nude work of art from all of art history and recreate it. From Henri Matisse’s “The Dance” to Diego Velázquez’s “Rokeby Venus” to Marcel Duchamp’s “Nude Descending a Staircase,” the appropriations breathed life into nude standards many hold near and dear to their hearts.

Some images appear remarkably similar to their historical antecedents, others take liberties to create a new photograph from an old painting. “I think reverse-engineering successful images to find out how they were made is a useful thing to be able to do,” Leifheitr explained. “My students are sophomores in art school, and I’d like them to be able to look at an image they like, be able to guess how it was made, and apply that knowledge to their own subject matter.”

champ

Leifheitr himself is no stranger to reconfiguring famous images. For example, he recently restaged a photo of Rudolph Nureyev taken by Richard Avedon, replacing the late dance icon with gay pornography giant Michael Lucas. He also photographed the contents of David Wojnarowicz’s “Magic Box” at NYU Fales Library, turning the results into a deck of oversized playing cards.

“I think there was something to be understood about the impossibility of true plagiarism in photography,” he wrote on VICE. “When I was in art school I remember becoming discouraged, believing any worthwhile image had already been made. The goal of this assignment was to teach that even if you try very hard to remake someone else’s work, your photographs can only be your own.”

“I’m interested in the stuff dead artists leave behind, and how those kind of archives can be reanimated or collaborated with,” he added over email.

“Artsy Nudes” is on its final leg at SVA (the show closes this weekend), though VICE fans can look forward to a 10-page spread of the works in this month’s magazine. You might have missed the show’s opening, which featured classical musicians performing in the nude, but it’s probably not the last figurative nude art show we’ll write about this year. Leifheitr cited Art F City founder Paddy Johnson in our e-conversation: “The figure is back.” Make that, the naked figure.

Before we ended our chat, we aksed Leifheitr about his show’s connection to the ever-present world of pornography, since he’s rubbed elbows with the industry before. “In my personal opinion, the line between porn and art is slippery, and ultimately unimportant,” he concluded. “It’s very dependent on context — if you’re in the office bathroom looking at the Matisse recreation my students made, and art historical pastiche makes you hot, I guess it might be porn in that context. If you’re in the gallery, it just looks like art.”

Well said, friend. Check out “Artsy Nudes” below.

Some Of The World’s Most Famous Transgender Women Cover CANDY magazine

2014 has been a whirlwind year for mainstream transgender visibility.

As we approach the end of this historic year for individuals identifying across the transgender spectrum, one magazine is celebrating the women who are living authentically and openly at the forefront of the battle for transgender rights.

For its 8th issue, Winter 2014-2015, C☆NDY Magazine brought together fourteen of the most prominent women who have become the faces of the transgender movement.

spread
From left to right: Laverne Cox, Janet Mock, Carmen Carrera, Geena Rocero, Isis King, Gisele Alicea, Leyna Ramous, Dina Marie, Nina Poon, Juliana Huxtable, Niki M’nray, Pêche Di, Carmen Xtravaganza and Yasmine Petty

C☆NDY cites itself as “the first transversal style magazine” and is reportedly named after Candy Darling, the Andy Warhol superstar.

Luis Venegas, founder of C☆NDY, told Style.com that the shoot found inspiration from Vanity Fair’s Hollywood Issue. “It’s the first time such a large number of trans women have been featured on the cover of a magazine,” he stated. “Is it too daring to say that we’ve made history? Time will tell.”

We absolutely love this. Check out two individual shots with Laverne Cox and Geena Rocero below.
