John Williams has become an irreplaceable figure in American popular culture. He ranks as the best-known creator of movie music in Hollywood history, with themes and scores that are instantly recognizable to listeners around the world.Perhaps none of Williams’ music is more famous than that of Star Wars (1977),which won the composer his third Academy Award. Director George Lucas later recalled: “About 90 percent of the Star Wars films are music. It’s done in a very old-fashioned style, almost like silent films, so the music kind of tells the story.A lot of the emotional content is carried through the music as much as by the scenes themselves.”
The extract “Throne Room and Finale,” from the conclusion of the original film, accompanies a ceremony honoring the victorious Luke Skywalker,Han Solo, and Chewbacca, and the end-credits roll. As Williams said in 1977:“I used a theme I am very fond of over the presentation of the medals; it has a kind of Land of Hope and Glory feeling to it, almost like coronation music.” For the finale, he invokes Luke’s theme, the Rebel spaceship fanfare, Princess Leia’s theme, and others from that first in what would eventually become a six-film series spanning nearly three decades, all scored by Williams.

Nicki Minaj Will Perform New Music For ‘SNL’ Finale, Announces World Tour

Celebrities At The Los Angeles Lakers Game

Nicki Minaj is making up for lost time with the impending release of her still-unnamed fourth studio album, with “Chun Li” and “Barbie Tingz” smashing the Internets and sparking renewed interest. The Queens superstar took to Twitter Sunday night to announce a world tour, and also said she’ll be rolling out new music for the season finale of Saturday Night Live this weekend.

“All ima say is this tour is [row of emojis] and if u miss it, don’t be mad at Chun. Be mad at YOU! Chun gave u ALLLL the time in the world. This album so [row of prayer hand emojis] AAAAHHHHHHHH!!!! I can’t take it,” Minaj tweeted Sunday evening.

She followed with, “US first. Then ALL AROUND THE WORLD. BUT THERE’S another surprise you won’t know. Bwahaaahahaaaaaa. The ones at the tour will be elevated to Team Minaj ELITE. Yes, I’m leaning towards M&G’s. Only cuz my babies been so patient. But pls don’t hold me to it. Love, #ChunLi”

As expected, the Barbz lost their minds over the news, but there was far more to go. When a fan asked about her upcoming SNL performance, she let one proverbial cat out the bag.

“I’ll perform a song you never heard b4. My fave on the album. plus my second song. You can prob guess what that’s gonna be,” Minaj replied. A fan, truly trying to get the scoop, asked Minaj what the track number of the song would be, getting the reply of “#1” which suggests the song is the intro to the new project.

We’ve posted Nicki Minaj’s emoji-laden and fun-loving tweets below, along with some reaction on the flip.

“Ghost Is Dead”: Power Season Finale Recap

James “Ghost” St. Patrick has always viewed himself as more than just a drug dealer. He aspires to succeed as a true businessman, as a life of illegal activity usually concludes with incarceration or death.

Season 2 of Power has thematically highlighted the Ghost “happily ever after” fantasy. In this narcotic funded Utopia, he rides into the sunset with his high school sweetheart, overseeing his (now legit) businesses without a care in the world. Unfortunately for him, reality was far more sinister. The ominous title of this episode, “Ghost is Dead” represents the endgame for James St. Patrick. Ghost must die in order for James St. Patrick to live. His exit strategy needs flawless execution in order to succeed. The season finale of Power brought us the culmination of Ghost’s plan, and the repercussions of his actions will provide the foundation for a hectic season 3.

How can Ghost get out of the game alive? Here were the key components of his plan

The Drug Operation Needs To End

Joe Proctor, always angling for more business, let’s Ghost know that he should keep him on retainer if he plans to continue his business. Proctor tells Ghost that with Lobos in custody and the witch hunt for witnesses, his best bet was to eliminate all ties to “Ghost” and leave the city. Ghost is resistant to this plan, and wants to handle things his way.

The mutiny against Ghost and Tommy turned the entire crew against them. It was time to “burn down The Carter” and clean house. Early on, it seemed that the Jimenez brothers were doing the dirty work for Ghost. Drifty got bodied within the first 3 minutes of the episode, and Vladimir (The Serb) met a similar fate. The hitman left a calling card, the “La Araña” (the Spider) card at every hit. Whomever is killing off the cartel is also texting other people from the deceased member’s cell phones. The USDA’s led by Mike Sandoval, inform Lobos that his NYC operation were dropping like flies, and he might be next unless he gets protection. Lobos holds firm on not snitching (including a hilarious roast session comparing Sandoval to a Telenovela actor) and denies any deal. The misfortune eventually found Lobos, as he was stabbed in cell by an inmate receiving a cell phone and instructions from the outside, dealing the same La Araña card.

Ghost still has respect for Ruiz, even through the double crosses. He goes to Ruiz to inform him of the hits on the cartel and how they have to leave town to protect themselves and their families while this all blows over. Ghost even suggests that Lobos may be behind the murders. Ruiz agrees and proceeds to pack up and leave NYC expeditiously. This leaves Tommy, Ghost and Kanan as the last remaining prominent members of the operation.

Reclaim Truth and Solidify His Legitimate Business Ventures

Simon Stern has proprietarily schooled Ghost this season. He forced him into a partnership by becoming his landlord, and continues to keep Ghost hooked by offering an unattainable 20% over profit goal in order for him to buy Truth back. The robbery at Truth where the books and money were stolen was met with minimal anger for Stern. Since he “couldn’t prove” that Ghost met the mark because the money was stolen and Kantos failed to enter the figures into the system, Stern considered his success a non factor. Little did Simon know that Ghost had a final trump card in his hand. During Stern’s divorce proceedings with his wife Madeline, she revealed her knowledge of his off shore embezzlement and his two sets of accounting records for Truth. Instead of alerting the authorities, Madeline worked out a deal to get ownership of Truth, along with two other clubs (probably including the Miami club too) and she subsequently signed the rights over to Ghost! Simon won many battles, but it finally looks like Ghost won the war, and his club back. Kantos better update his Linkedin profile!

What to Watch Tonight: The Return of Playing House, the Season 1 Finale of Stitchers, and the CMA Music Festival

What to Watch Tonight: The Return of Playing House, the Season 1 Finale of Stitchers, and the CMA Music FestivalWhat to watch on Tuesday, August 4… 8pm, ABC CMA Music Festival: Country's Night to Rock Performances by Carrie Underwood, Keith Urban, Lady Antebellum, Kenny Chesney, and many more are among the highlights from the four-day hootenanny in Nashville, recorded in June. Little Big Town returns to host for the third time. 8pm, ABC Family Pretty Little Liars With the girls considered persona non grata at the Rosewood High prom in "Last Dance," their mothers instead organize the swankiest gala ever held in Spencer's barn. But will Charles find a way to foil the festivities? SEASON 1 FINALE, 9pm, ABC Family Stitchers After a shooter wounds Det. Fisher, the team circles the wagons in "Full Stop." Kirsten's stitch leads to a security expert with connections to her mom and to Maggie, while Linus is preoccupied with jealousy that Cameron is training Camille as his backup. DOCUMENTARY PREMIERE, 9pm, PBS JFK & LBJ: A Time for Greatness A chronicle of the Johnson administration's efforts to pass the 1964 Civil Rights Act and the 1965 Voting Rights Act, among the most vital legislation in American history. This week marks the 50th anniversary of the latter's signing. Morgan Freeman narrates. 9pm, CBS Zoo Mitch and Chloe are kidnapped by a drug lord while trying to solve Rio's bat problem, as the series increasingly veers into chemically addled Hunter S. Thompson fanfic. Elsewhere in "This Is What It Sounds Like," Jackson Oz, Jamie, and Agent Shaffer search for escaped inmate Evan Lee Hartley. 9pm, TNT Rizzoli & Isles In "Nice to Meet You, Dr. Isles," the investigation of a high-profile jeweler's murder leads to a relative of Maura's—and to a skeleton in the family closet. 9pm, Syfy Face Off Aboard a U.S. Coast Guard ship in "Siren Song," the artists must conjure their versions of the lethally alluring aquatic temptresses. Round up the usual suspects (i.e., everyone on the regular-and-recurring-cast call sheet). 10pm, NBC Hollywood Game Night Gina Rodriguez, Rex Lee, Tom Arnold, Curtis Stone, Yvette Nicole Brown, and Zachary Levi are the contestants in an episode titled "Don't Drink and Game Night," which strikes me as entirely contrary to the ethos of Hollywood Game Night. 10pm, FX Tyrant Jamal doubts Rami's loyalty in "Fathers and Sons," while Sammy throws his support behind the insurgents battling the Army of the Caliphate. Meanwhile, Barry is troubled by his apparent dependence on the goodwill of the palace. 10pm, TBS Clipped The gang tries to help Buzzy recoup his losses in "The Gambler," but Ben isn't fully on board with their plan. Elsewhere, the Doyle sisters are enmeshed in wedding-related shenanigans, prompting Joy to question her relationship with Bart. 10pm, TNT Proof In "Reborn," a grieving mother is certain that her dead son has been reincarnated in a piano. Sounds more like fare for a wacky sitcom than for a contemplative drama, doesn't it? Wait… sorry, that should say "in a piano prodigy." Had my notes mixed up. Now if you'll excuse me, I just had a brilliant idea for a wacky sitcom pilot script. 10:30pm, Comedy Central Another Period Hoping to gain fame, Lillian stages her own kidnapping in "Switcheroo Day." In other schemes, Dodo tasks Peepers with impersonating the Commodore at a luncheon, and Beatrice mistakes Blanche for an aristocrat. 12:30am, Comedy Central The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail Performers in "The One With the Clearance Issues" include Aparna Nancherla, Ron Funches, Al Madrigal, and Chelsea Peretti. Has everyone calmed down yet? No? Us either. The Season 5 finale, “Mother’s Mercy,” definitely delivered, as any “GoT” finale should, with some of the series’ most monumental sequences. But before we get into anything else, we must jump ahead and discuss that final scene, you know, the one that shattered hearts across the Seven Kingdoms.

Is Jon Snow dead?
The episode ended with Jon getting attacked by his brothers of the Night’s Watch and Olly, who repeatedly stabbed the Lord Commander. Angry over Jon’s alliance with the Wildlings, the brothers stabbed Jon as they yelled, “For the Watch.” This likely wouldn’t have happened if Sam was still there to protect his friend and hadn’t gone to Oldtown. It was traumatic and anyone who hasn’t read the books was in for a serious surprise. So the question remains, is Jon actually dead? Entertainment Weekly already confirmed Kit Harington won’t be back for Season 6, but check out our theories post where we dig deeper into that question and whether or not Harington will return to the series at all.

The finale also caught us up with every major storyline. Here’s what else went down:

Cersei walked her shameful walk
One of the biggest, most expensive and most controversial “GoT” scenes was revealed tonight when Cersei Lannister had her Walk of Shame. As it happened in the books, Cersei was forced by the High Sparrow to strip naked, have her head shaved and walk through King’s Landing as penance for her sins of incest, murder and fornication. The scene reportedly cost HBO upwards of $ 200,000 to shoot after a church in Croatia tried to prevent it from happening.

cersei got

The Mountain returned
After Cersei’s Walk of Shame, The Mountain returned to pick her up and carry her off. He was clad in armor, though with his face hidden, concealing whatever Frankenstein experiments Qyburn did on him.

Arya brutally killed Meryn Trant
Finally Arya was able to cross another name off her kill list. Meryn Trant, the man who (possibly) killed Arya’s sword-fighting instructor, Syrio Forel, and beat Sansa per Joffrey’s orders. Arya set her eye on Meryn when he arrived in Braavos last week, but on Sunday, she showed the abhorrent man no mercy and stabbed him in the eyes, in the chest and slit his throat. But then Arya went blind when Jaqen H’ghar drank poison.

arya got

Ellaria Martell killed Myrcella
Ellaria kissed Myrcella goodbye when she left Dorne with Jaime. Soon after her uncle Jaime told Myrcella he was not in fact her uncle after all. His daughter, surprisingly, showed him love and acceptance for his relationship with Cersei. But then, Myrcella began bleeding from her nose as the poison sunk in. Myrcella is gone and Ellaria took the antidote soon after, but it’s about to be full on war between King’s Landing and Dorne.

jaime myrcella

Dany landed in the Dothraki Sea
After escaping the fighting pits on Drogon’s back last week, Dany and her dragon landed in the Dothraki Sea. Drogon was too tired to take her back to Meereen (dragon nap time takes precedence), so Dany walked on foot only to run into a khalasar.

Brienne killed Stannis
Or did she? After Stannis marches on Winterfell, the episode jumps ahead and skips showing the actual battle (budget issues, HBO?) When Brienne learns that Stannis has arrived, she approaches the wounded king and kills him. But the scene cuts to Ramsay killing one of Stannis’ men before we learn whether or not the Baratheon is dead. In other Stannis news, his wife Selyse hanged herself.

brienne finale

Sansa & Theon escaped
Myranda tried to kill Sansa with a bow and arrow, but Theon saved her at the last minute, shoving Ramsay’s jealous girlfriend over a ledge. Yes, Theon is back! He and Sansa escaped Winterfell together. We just hope they survived that incredibly high fall.

That ‘Jane The Virgin’ Finale: Eight Ways It Was Awesome

Where to begin with the “Jane the Virgin” Season 1 finale? How about with a phrase frequently uttered by its narrator: “Let’s do this!”

Just over a year ago, members of the media began getting copies of the pilot for “Jane the Virgin.” By August, there was hardly a TV reporter or critic who didn’t have a mild or major crush on the show. It was so smart and precisely calibrated; it was bold and melodramatic at times, but it efficiently mixed heartfelt family drama into its telenovela constructs. The “Jane the Virgin” pilot was simply light-years better than most of the turgid, forced pilots the broadcast networks aired last year.

But did any critic really believe the show could sustain the impressive deftness of the pilot for an entire season? Asked to contemplate that possibility, critics tended to get worried expression on their faces. Of course, we wanted to bet on Jane Gloriana Villanueva and her family; we wanted to think it could be done. But TV is in the business of breaking hearts, and many a fine show has gone down in flames a few months, or sometimes just weeks, after a promising debut.

How awesome is it that “Jane the Virgin” rewarded our faith in it with an incredibly strong and entertaining first season. The finale energetically capped a series of season-long sagas that kept twisting and turning every week without generally losing their shape, and now that we know Jane, Rogelio, Xiomara, Alba, Michael, Rafael and even Petra better, nearly every moment of the finale landed with more force and every in-joke was that much more fun. Not only has a lot of old business been wrapped up, there will clearly be many soapy twists and tear-inducing moments when Jane, her little son Mateo and the rest of her clan return in the fall.

In the interest of keeping things as spry and sprightly as the addictive CW show, I’m going to skip right to a list of the best parts of the finale. Of course, if you wanted to get distracted by this feature on the show and by these interviews with cast members Gina Rodriguez, Ivonne Coll and Jaime Camil and with executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman, you are welcome to do so.

But without further ado, here are a few of my favorite elements of the fab Season 1 finale:

  1. The baby! The idea of Jane becoming a mother is so familiar by now that it had practically become mundane — except, as things transpired in the finale, it wasn’t! It was genuinely moving when Jane held her tiny son in her arms, and before that, the sight of the three Villanueva women together, with Xio cheering on Jane and repeating what Alba had told her during Jane’s birth, was just magic. There has been a lot of turmoil lately when it comes to the men in Jane’s life, but the show returned to its core strength in that scene: It focused on the three women of the family, whose love for each other and for the new member of the family could practically be felt in waves coming off the screen.
  2. The name! When Alba started crying at Jane naming the baby Mateo, well, forget it. If you didn’t at least get a lump in your throat, you’re a monster. And if there is a sweeter and more emotionally effective scene on TV this year, I will eat my hat and then cry a little more.
  3. The bus! Not a lot of TV shows feature multiple working-class characters, and shows that do tend to be serious, if not depressing or downbeat. One of the best aspects of “Jane the Virgin” is that it takes the Villanueva’s budget and bills seriously, but it never assumes that the characters are downtrodden or unhappy about their lives — quite the opposite, in fact. The show celebrates their hard work and aspirations while not getting too sentimental about what it’s like to have to think hard about where each dollar will go. In any event, the whole bus trip was delightful and hilarious, and it was typical of the way the show celebrates the way hard-working people look out for each other. The wild bus trip was also one of many callbacks to the pilot, which also showed Jane taking public transportation and being addressed by a talking Rogelio poster. In the finale, though, even the crosstalk by the bus passengers was a hoot (“Is there a doctor on board?” “I’m a vet.”)
  4. The narrator! The Latin Lover Narrator has been a delight from the start, but his presence has only become more enjoyable over time. The finale gave his lively personality even more room to shine (“Zoinks!”), as he alternated between narration modes, one minute cheering on Jane, the next minute commenting on the action and in other scenes, reminding us of various shenanigans that transpired during an eventful Season 1. I’ll miss the show during the summer, but I may miss the warm voice of the narrator (Anthony Mendez) most of all.
  5. Rogelio! “Jane the Virgin” is a busy show with lots of plots to keep spinning, which sometimes cuts into Rogelio’s screen time, and I’m sure he would agree that that is a tragedy. Every moment of Jaime Camil’s screen time in the pilot was gold, from his petulant conversation with Xio in Vegas to his clear desire to hashtag the birth of his grandson (#TeamMatelio).
  6. A surprise Vegas wedding! Ro and Xio are married! Zoinks!
  7. So many little things. Even as the show pulled off big moves— Mateo was abducted! Sin Rostro is back! Michael’s spy-worthy stratagems! — it had fun with the smaller moments and less showy scenes. Michael and Rafael fighting over Jane and her giving them expert side-eye was great, as was our introduction to Rogelio’s wake-up song (“It’s another beautiful day to be Rogelio!”). Not only was the finale expertly constructed, it was just zippy and moved fast, but it didn’t rush past any of the emotional moments, all of which were very effective. It’s killing me that we have to wait until the fall for more “Jane the Virgin” goodness.
  8. The stats! OK, this is cheating a little bit, given that this factoid relates to Season 1 as a whole, not just the finale. But this information is worth pointing out. During its first season, “Jane the Virgin” employed 15 directors. Nine of them were women, and four of them were women of color. And, as it happened, during its first season, the show received the CW’s first-ever Golden Globe, its first-ever Peabody Award and lots of other attention and acclaim. Well, how about that?

Ryan McGee and I will discuss the “Jane the Virgin” finale, as well as the most recent episode of “Mad Men,” in a Talking TV podcast that will be posted Tuesday evening.

Jimmy Kimmel Won’t Air New Episode Opposite David Letterman’s Finale: ‘I Have Too Much Respect For Dave’

Even Jimmy Kimmel will be watching David Letterman’s final “Late Show.”

Kimmel, whose ABC show “Jimmy Kimmel Live” airs at the same time at Letterman’s, said this week that he has chosen to air a repeat of his program on May 20, the night of his idol’s finale.

“I have too much respect for Dave to do anything that would distract viewers from watching his final show,” Kimmel told The New York Times. “Plus, I’ll probably be crying all day, which makes it hard to work.”

Both Jimmy Fallon’s “Tonight Show” and “Conan” are planning on airing new episodes on May 20, according to the Times.

Letterman, 68, has spent 22 of his 33 years in late-night television as host of “Late Show.” Stephen Colbert will take the helm on September 8.

Kimmel has publicly expressed his respect and admiration for Letterman in the past. In 2012, he offered a tribute to the late-night legend at the 2012 Kennedy Center Honors.

“You, Dave, are the funniest, the smartest, the weirdest, the coolest, and the best one ever, hands down,” Kimmel said of his hero.

What Happened On The Season Finale Of ‘The 100’?

Don’t read on unless you’ve seen the Season 2 finale of “The 100,” “Blood Must Have Blood Part 2.”

I know I’m preaching to the choir here — if you’re reading this, you’re already a loyal viewer of “The 100.” You might have some issues with this or that aspect of the show, but by now you’re most likely in it for the long haul and you don’t need to be convinced that the show is the real deal.

That said, I’m going to preface my remarks about Season 2 finale of “The 100” with a couple of general thoughts. As you might have gathered, my job is to watch a lot of TV — as much as I can (whee!). A lot of amazingly wonderful people write about TV — many of them very well — and I make no distinction between an eloquent analysis that appears on Tumblr or on a solo blog and one that is written for money.

That said, ideally there is a valuable thing a professional critic can bring to the party: A depth and breadth of knowledge about what’s happening in many different arenas of television. Most critics I know try to watch almost every scripted drama that comes down the pike, and many of the comedies as well (no shade on unscripted fare, but I don’t get to it lately because there’s just too much good scripted stuff to watch). Critics try to keep track, to the degree that we can, of the big picture, and we try to let the world know when shows — big or small, high- or low-profile — are doing something new and important, or mastering a valuable set of goals with particular force and eloquence.

With that in mind, I can say with some assurance that I’ve rarely seen a program demonstrate the kind of consistency and thematic dedication that “The 100” has shown in its first two seasons. This is a show about moral choices and the consequences of those choices, and it’s been laudably committed to those ideas from Day 1.

You may well say, “But wait, Mo — isn’t this basically an adventure story about risky survival in a series of unforgiving environments?” Well, sure. There is that. But underpinning those plot mechanics and story settings are a series of important questions that the show takes very seriously. What does it mean to survive? Who do you become if you sacrifice others in order to survive? When do the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few? When is taking a life — or many lives — justified? What are the consequences of taking those lives — how does it transform you and your ideas about your self-worth?

The characters don’t necessarily know the answers to these questions. Even after they’ve made a decision, they often struggle with what they’ve done. What gives “The 100” a particularly rich flavor on the character front is that very few people on the screen are in a position to judge anyone else. No one occupies the moral high ground. There is blood on the hands of just about every person on the screen.

According to one reading of the narrative, Clarke is a mass murderer — and she’s not remotely the only one we’ve encountered. Hell, in Season 1, 300 people were killed all at once, which was one of the moments that convinced me that the show wasn’t going to play around when it came to the hard calls. Of course, seeing Clarke only as a killer would be a profoundly limited interpretation of who she is and what she’s done; at every step, I look at her decisions and think I probably would have done the same thing. To its credit, the show explores these issues of morality and ethics without beating us over the head with them. You only have to look at Clarke’s face at several key moments in the finale to understand that she herself is asking these questions: “Am I a monster? What kind of person am I?”

The cast does a phenomenal job of quietly conveying these internal battles, the directors and crew have done an increasingly exceptional job of creating tension on the screen, and for a long time, the writers have had a clear grasp of who these people are and where they’re headed. All of those things make “The 100” an addictive show. I watch each episode the night it airs (a rarity for me), because I want to know what happens next, but what gives the show extra weight and import are those examinations of personal imperatives versus community needs. How do individuals with limited resources weigh their bonds to each other — as friends, as family, as clans, as would-be conquerers or reluctant allies? What are they capable of doing to save each other, what are their limits, and do their most terrible acts make them less human — or more noble?

How many other shows do that — engage fans on the surface level, on the character level and on the philosophical level? Not many, in my view.

The Walking Dead” occasionally takes a run at those questions, but too often, it gets mired in circular plotting and takes shortcuts with shoddy, convenient shortcuts. It has its moments, to be sure, but its biggest weakness is frustratingly bland or variable characterizations. “The 100,” by contrast, has only grown more assured over the course of its two seasons, and it engages with wrenching questions with far more consistency than a lot of shows with much bigger budgets. Many of us have compared the show to “Battlestar Galactica,” its most obvious influence, but what the hell — I’m going to bring up “Game of Thrones.” Yeah, I went there. These shows are not doing the same things, clearly. Of course the CW show’s budget is minuscule compared to that of the HBO behemoth, and “The 100” can’t necessarily match “Game of Thrones” when it comes to epic visuals and enormous battles.

That said, “The 100” acquits itself very well aesthetically, as I’ve noted in the past. But the comparison to “Game of Thrones” is apt in other ways as well. I can’t think of many other shows that combine moments of high adventure, a devotion to knotty characterizations and a keen exploration of philosophical dilemmas with such frequently fruitful results. Don’t you think Clarke and Daenerys would have a lot to say to each other if they ever met?

And let’s get real: “The 100” has a better record than the HBO drama in one arena. As far as I can recall, the CW show has never used female characters or extras for lazy or exploitative purposes (the upside to being on the CW: No sexposition). And while I like both shows a lot, “Game of Thrones” has had trouble at times keeping its sprawling narrative under control, while this season “The 100” expanded its array of characters without losing momentum. Everyone in Westeros (and beyond) is fighting for survival, but that’s the case on “The 100” too, and as a fan of focused, intelligent genre storytelling, I’m glad we have both shows around to provide very human stories of frailty, sacrifice, connection and greed.

All in all, as this season of “The 100” comes to a close, I have to say I’m generally impressed with how it built on the strengths of Season 1, and I’ll be very keen to see where it goes next season.

So, about the finale itself — who guessed that before the season was out, we’d see a killer sea monster eating a dude! Just when you thought it was safe to go on a cruise with Jaha …

Seriously, I love the fact that the show keeps finding new things to throw at these characters. There are weird, irradiated creatures on the ground, so it makes a sense that bodies of water wouldn’t be any safer than the forests and mountains. In any event, I had a feeling that the guys with Jaha and Murphy were not long for this world, given that I could not remember their names and they certainly seemed like redshirts who would be killed off at the earliest opportunity. Points to the show for taking them out in a scary and surprising way. Nobody expects the carnivorous sea monster!

Speaking of Jaha, he provides a good example of the show’s commitment to moral complexity: I should hate him for throwing an innocent survivor off the boat in order to distract the beast and save himself and Murphy, but Isaiah Washington plays the guy with such charismatic zeal that I can’t help but be on his side a lot of the time. By the way, it would have been easy for the side plot about Jaha and Murphy’s punishing road trip to start to seem like an unnecessary distraction (a la many of the Hong Kong flashbacks on “Arrow“). As it turned out, there was just enough of it to work well as a bit of contrast.

The odd-couple pairing of the cynical Murphy and the messianic Jaha paid real dividends: The fact that Murphy committed himself to Jaha’s unlikely mission gave Murphy something to believe in, however preposterous the former president’s mission seemed. Murphy didn’t get to do much more than glower in Season 1, so seeing new sides of his personality on the Jaha road trip was enjoyable. As for Jaha, his messianic fervor was enjoyable to watch, and in a show that now an then can be a little too committed to its grim, unrelenting worldview, Jaha’s fervent, slightly cracked positivity was a nice contrast to the rest of the show.

But what about the meat of the episode, Mo! Well, I’ve been putting that off because damn, things got dark. It’s no surprise that the show isn’t afraid to go to pitch-black places, but the finale particularly brutal in certain spots. I still can’t get the sound of that drill out of my head, let alone the images of Raven and Abbie on that bloody table inside the mountain’s chamber of horrors. Even harder to watch: Dozens of inhabitants of the mountain dying horribly of radiation poisoning. That was rough. I didn’t think the season would end with most of the Mountain Men dead, but it fits right in with how things work in this world. There didn’t have to be carnage because the show exploits carnage for cheap thrills. There had to be a lot of deaths because in a world with resources this limited, detentes and alliances are always going to be temporary at best.

I give director/executive producer Dean White a lot of credit for how he shot the scenes in which the mountain folk died; they were quite mournful, and rightfully so. There’s violence on “The 100,” but the show isn’t casual about it. Serious bloodshed here is rarely rote or inconsequential. If the dead are enemies, those who did the killing feel bad about it, or at the very least conflicted. If the dead were friends, as was the case in the destruction of Ton DC, the atmosphere of regret is all the more palpable. There was a melancholy feeling to almost every scene of death in the finale, a pained, bittersweet atmosphere heightened by the great work of the cast.

I can’t say enough good things about the work Eliza Taylor has done as Clarke: She’s continually found new ways to give shadings and nuance to the character’s self-doubt and self-confidence. These qualities stand in opposition to each other, yet to remain interested in Clarke, we have to believe in her as both a strong leader and as a human being who feels fear and regret, and who wants the people around her to like her and approve of her actions. I keep thinking about the many emotions — regret, sadness, shock, relief — that flashed across her face when she finally embraced Abbie. Taylor imbued two simple words — “I tried” — with so much unspoken meaning and barely repressing feeling.

I’m not sure how the fandom in general felt about the Clarke-Lexa kiss (personally, I hope it launched a thousand shipper Tumblrs, which I plan to investigate soon). It was, in my view, an appropriate and well-handled culmination to that storyline. As Ryan McGee pointed out, both women were at ease commanding the large factions following them, but very few of their friends and associates understand the burdens leadership place on them. That kiss represented a moment of comfort and connection, one that both of them knew wouldn’t last. Lexa and Clarke just had too many other tasks to complete. But the kiss made Lexa’s actions in “Blood Must Have Blood, Part 1” feel like not just a cold rejection, but a personal betrayal as well.

Touching on that for a moment, I think the deal Lexa made was in line with her way of thinking. She proposed allowing everyone in Ton DC to die in order to keep their spy’s presence a secret, and she’s made similarly brutal calculations in the past to keep her people alive. Though the announcement of the deal was abrupt, all in all, that development made sense within the universe of “The 100.” The show isn’t just about deploying carnage — it doesn’t raise the stakes by killing more people in more brutal ways. It finds creative ways to increase the pressure on the characters by altering their circumstances in sometimes shocking ways. Having the Grounders abandon the Sky People at a crucial moment — to my way of thinking, that’s the kind of thing this show does. It pulls the rug out from under well-intentioned, flawed people and sees what they do when they’re scrambling, angry and afraid.

Given that the show is all about consequences, the high point of the finale was the last scene between Bellamy and Clarke. Both Taylor and Bob Morley have presence to spare, and their on-screen chemistry was simply undeniable in that scene. There’s so much unspoken emotion in that moment, and whether or not they ever get together as a couple, the bond they share as survivors of that awful day — all these awful days — was palpable. The look on Bellamy’s face as he said, “You’re forgiven… You don’t have to do this alone” — it was just heartbreaking. But I understood why Clarke walked off to be by herself for a while. She’s been through a lot, and sorting it out mentally and emotionally would require some time and space. She knows she did the right thing, yet she still needs to forgive herself, and the many contradictions within that statement are part of what make this show intellectually and emotionally addictive.

Finally, what do we make of Jaha’s new friend? Last season’s final images were a bit more of a visceral gut-punch, but that’s no slam on this season’s closing scenes. Given how much of an impact the wrap-up of the Mount Weather story had, we didn’t need the Jaha-Murphy closing scenes to melt our brains, thank you very much. I just don’t know what to make of the characters the road trip duo encountered, and obviously, that’s the point.

Did that nice computer-generated lady want to start another war using Jaha’s stray nuke? Did she start the war that decimated the world 100 years ago? What gives with the video of the suicidal guy in the super chill survival bunker? Will Murphy ever get to relax and have a damn drink without something horrifying happening?

We’ll have to wait at least six months to find out. See you on the other side.

A few more bullet points before I head into my bunker:

  • A recommendation: If you like genre storytelling with a lot of heart, arresting visuals, terrific performances and surprising character depth, check out Showtime’s “Penny Dreadful,” one of my other favorite under-hyped shows.
  • Was Murphy eating Pop Tarts in those scenes? Maybe they were some sort of survival biscuit, but they looked a lot like Pop Tarts. Which makes sense. Even before he got to Earth, I bet the main components of Murphy’s diet were alcohol and junk food.
  • Goodbye President Dante Wallace. Raymond J. Barry brought a welcome sense of gravitas and wily intelligence to the show. I loved the final exchange between him and Clarke: “You won’t do it.” “You don’t know me very well.”
  • Emerson may be in the wind. If he is, he’d be well advised to steer clear of Clarke.
  • I was a little surprised that so many people in the mountain died; I had been under the impression that more of them got the treatments. I wonder if a number of treated soldiers and perhaps got away, but that seems unlikely.
  • I’m glad we got a final moment between Indra and Lincoln. Clearly the Grounders are not out of the picture in the long-term, which is a good thing. Not so good: Alycia Debnam Cary, who plays Lexa, has been cast in the “Walking Dead” spinoff. She was fantastic on “The 100,” and I hope we see her again, though her new job may make that unlikely.
  • Goodbye Maya. Truth be told, I never felt that character was developed all that well; she rarely felt like a specific person to me. That said, I felt very sorry for poor Jasper.
  • A nice moment of badassery: Lincoln getting his revenge on Cage. “The first dose is the worst!”
  • An even better moment of badassery: Octavia going Black Widow on two guards inside the mountain. In a dark and eventful hour, that was probably my favorite moment of pure action. If “The 100” launched a Linctavia spinoff which mainly consisted of them kicking a lot of ass, in the style of Cinemax’s underrated action noirBanshee,” I’d be OK with that.
  • I say this with love: It’s kind of funny that amidst the preparations for war, Clarke stopped by the Grounder boutique that sells the latest in all-black badass threads. Her new costume fit in with her status as the leader of an important faction going to war, but clearly the Grounders have a lot of time to devote to making bedazzled gloves.
  • If I have one overall idea about what “The 100” could do in its third season, it’s this: More “Colonial Day.” That’s an episode of “Battlestar Galactica” in which we got to see the characters socializing and relaxing, at least for a little while. We saw different sides of them as they celebrated a holiday, and that episode and others like it helped cement my affection for them and my interest in their lives. I truly appreciate the energetic pace of “The 100”, its moral gravity and its ability to come up with believable but shocking twists, but having some lighter moments can help the darker aspects of any show stand out. Also, purely character-driven moments can also just be fun to watch. I liked watching Raven and Wick bicker about engineering dilemmas; I like seeing Jasper and Monty hang out; I like seeing what happens when characters are not on the run or being beaten up. When a show pays attention to its forward momentum but gives the people in the story a chance to reaffirm their bonds with each other within non-traumatizing situations, it can really pay off in the long term. I’m not saying “The 100” needs an influx of kittens and rainbows — this is not that kind of show — but adding a little more tonal and emotional variety might be a welcome thing when the show returns. It’s just a thought.
  • The final words belong Murphy: “Your promised land sucks!”

Ryan McGee and I discussed the season finale of “The 100” as well as “iZombie” and “Powers” on this week’s Talking TV podcast, which is here, on iTunes and below.

‘The Comeback’ Signs Off With A Stunning Season Finale

Rarely is television able to capture anything as graceful or thought-provoking as the second season of “The Comeback.” For something that lays out its premise in such a bare way, the eight-episode journey of Valerie Cherish, set nine years after we first met her, spoke to everything the show has worked to accomplish. For the first time in the series’ history, Val is free from a prying camera lens, and we are able to see some of the comedy’s most unbridled emotions.

Despite whispering to Andy Cohen that she “get[s] it now” — “it” being reality television, following her calamitous attempt to join the “Real Housewives of Beverly Hills” cast — Val obviously does not “get it.” Very little about the way Val comports herself in front of reality cameras is real, which is part of why Season 2 has remained so pleasantly punishing. We expect most characters to grow in some way, but with Val we get the opposite. After seeing her accept the role on “Seeing Red,” simulate a blow job onscreen and bomb at The Groundlings, Valerie’s marriage — the one consistent source of support in her life — begins to crumble. It was one thing to see Mark move out; no way could he survive the intrusive presence of the “Seeing Red” crew in their house. But when Val kept her wire on during their important reunion dinner, we moved past marital decay and into a degree of miscalculation that leapt beyond any of her past transgressions. If Valerie’s marriage molders but she wins an Emmy as Jane’s cameras roll, it’s enough to say that there is no such thing as a real Valerie. The scenes in which Val and Mark forgot there was a camera embedded in their bedroom, when glimmers of honesty and comfort shone through, would have been for naught.

Instead, Val leaves the Emmys to go see Mickey in the hospital when his cancer flares up, and the show loses its ugly quality and morphs into the very thing Valerie wanted all along: the beauty of a well-produced television show, one in which she’d strut around with a literal glow hugging her frame. In Valerie’s ideal world, she’d get the laugh, the cry and the cheer, all according to the script that was handed to her. She’s got to give the people what they want, you know?

Valerie thought she got what she wanted with an Emmy nomination, people cheering when she arrives at a pre-party and advances from her hunky former co-star (Kellan Lutz). We know she didn’t. It isn’t until there’s no script and no producer instructing her that Val finds security. She leaves the ugliness of reality TV, and we get a third-party look as she panics about the odds of losing one of the people most loyal to making each of her performances look their best. By the time she arrives at the hospital, Mickey is okay and Mark is awed at her decision to abandon the award show before her category is announced. (By the way, how fun was it to discover Val was up against Julie Bowen, Anna Chlumsky, Laverne Cox and Sofia Vergara?)

At last, Valerie got, as the finale’s title indicates, everything she wanted — and realized she didn’t need to perform to do so. Isn’t that part of what the show has implied all along? We treasure Val’s ridiculousness, but we also know there’s a real person in there who might emerge if Val would remove the mask she insists on donning most of the time. She may have to step into a Dorothy-leaving-Kansas meditation to get there, but this is still the Val we’ve known since “Room & Bored,” the one who’s desperate for admiration. The only difference is that, for a few moments, the facade that’s made us cringe was stripped away. The episode’s warmth created a shocking finale that confirmed everything we love about the show’s acerbic calculations.

Did we need a “lesson” to feel good about “The Comeback”? Of course not. But after years away from it, do we really need a revived show to retread the same material? Time and wisdom have a direct correlation, which is part of why the return of “Arrested Development” fell flat. In keeping, the finale seems to say “The Comeback” isn’t just a show about an industry — it’s about a person.

Michael Patrick King and Lisa Kudrow have demurred about whether there’s more life in “The Comeback.” (Sean Hayes, who guest-starred on the finale and is pals with Kudrow, said it’s already a done deal.) One of the finale’s major accomplishments is tying a satisfying bow around this wonderful, turbulent season. We could leave Valerie forever and feel like we finally got a full picture. But it also proves that revisiting the show in another several years is HBO’s best course. Let Val and Mark go to the Emmy after-parties — “Uh, have we met?” is the perfect response when Mark asks if she still wants to go; see, she hasn’t changed! — but let’s check back in on them after another set of hurdles and another attempt at self-realization has set in. It turns out “The Comeback” isn’t so much about lack of growth; it’s about learning how (and when) to grow. For Valerie Cherish, it was a very specific journey. It’s not done yet. There will be a next phase, another comeback — we have no reason to believe otherwise. Valerie can gain some enlightenment and still flirt with the dark side. Laura Dern built an entire character off that concept. But now that we’ve stepped off the red carpet and into Valerie’s Kansas, the show has proven it was about achieving happiness all along. The teary-eyed sentimentality it took to get there shouldn’t distract from the continued mission to remain true to Valerie Cherish — good, bad, ugly and impossibly beautiful.

In the meantime, give Lisa Kudrow all the awards in the world. There wasn’t a better television performance this year.

The Progressive ‘Legend Of Korra’ Finale Was A Win For Fans Everywhere

“Legend of Korra” Finale Spoilers!

Fan shippers rejoice!

“The Legend of Korra,” Nickelodeon’s sequel to “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” has come to a close in a big way. The series ended following the release of its two-part finale, “Day Of The Colossus”/“The Last Stand,” which you can find online at Nick. And fan shippers everywhere don’t want to miss this one.

For those who don’t know, a fan ship is a made-up relationship between characters that’s usually supported in fan art or fan fiction but rarely ever actually happens; however, that may have just changed.

After the threat from Kuvira is handled, the series closes on Korra and Asami holding hands and going off into the spirit world together. Then Korrasami supporters around the world let out a scream of joy. The fan ship finally seems to be official.

The last scene of the series is surprising given comments made by “Korra” creator Bryan Konietzko to The Wall Street Journal saying fans like to make up relationships but are “disinterested” in seeing those actually happen. Also, keep in mind that this is a Nick show. Putting a same-sex relationship in a cartoon is a pretty progressive move.

Despite everything working against it, Korrasami has been one of the most supported fan-wanted relationships on the web, and the show has had hints fans have been all over. The biggest perhaps being the letters the pair exchanged in Season 4, which shows how close the characters have become. iDigitalTimes points out, even the voice of Korra herself, Janet Varney, was a supporter of the two getting together.

With the ending, “Korra” comes to a close in a way that can please supporters of the relationship and still keep things innocent. Even so, some Korrasami fans took things a step further with this fan-made extended ending:
