Making the Fashion System Traceable, Transparent Focus of UNECE Forum

Full transparency might still be a pipe dream for politics, but the fashion industry is edging closer to that realization.
Next month several hundred leaders — from government, NGOs, designer houses, fast-fashion labels and other sectors — will converge in Paris for a two-day forum hosted by the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe. “Measuring Impact” will be the theme of the event on Due Diligence in the Garment and Footwear Sector at the OECD in Paris. After an exploratory meeting last year that attracted nearly 500, the upcoming forum aims to answer such questions as, “Where are my clothes coming from?” and “How are they done?” according to UNECE’s acting head of Sustainable Trade and Outreach Unit Maria Teresa Pisani. “The objective of the project is to have consumers, as well as manufacturers, brands and others answer the question, ‘Where is this coming from? How is this made?’”
Adopted in 2017, the OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Supply Chains in the Garment and Footwear Sector is designed to help companies meet the due diligence expectations laid out in the group’s Guidelines for Multinational Enterprises. Developed through a multi-stakeholder process, the Guidance was approved by all governments adhering to the OECD

Melania Trump Says ‘Focus on What I Do, Not What I Wear’

PRACTICALLY SPEAKING: As any politician can attest, setting the stage is essential to an public appearance. While First Lady Melania Trump is once removed in terms of being an elected official, she made today’s visit to Cairo – the finale of a four African nation tour, a cinematic one with a visit to the Pyramids in Ginzi.
Her arrival in Egypt began with some of the ingredients of the standard airport meet-and-greet: Schoolchildren, her fellow First Lady Entissar al-Sisi and a red carpet. But what was the third of four diplomatic entrances this week bordered on silent, according to a press pool. No music played and “very tough security” kept a close eye. In addition, police manned rooftops as the motorcade made its way through the city streets. Although work weeks can reel into Cairo as many as 25 million people, traffic was not an issue, partially due to Saturday being a holiday, the pool said. Media types were advised to leave their electronic devices behind, when the caravan stopped at the presidential palace. There, Trump and Egypt President Abdul Fattah el-Sisi met behind closed doors for under an hour.
Today’s activities included paying a visit to officials at the U.S. Embassy

IMG Extends Focus, a Full-Service Creative and Event Production Company

IMG’S NEW FOCUS: IMG is formalizing the development of a full-service creative and event production company called Focus. The company aims to bring original events and bespoke brand experiences to life.
Focus looks to offer new clients access to leading fashion events, venues, models and talent, along with the creative network of Endeavor, IMG’s parent company. Focus specializes in planning and executing fashion shows and events, as well as consulting and creative direction.
Dominic Kaffka, vice president of creative and production at IMG, will lead the new enterprise, in addition to his current role. Since 2015, he has played an instrumental role in New York Fashion Week: The Shows, overseeing creative direction and event production.
Previously, Focus has produced events for limited clients with its own properties, and hasn’t worked with external clients to execute their visions, Kaffka said. It is now seeking outside business.
“We realize there’s a real opportunity in different markets globally. We thought it made sense to go public about it,” he said. Right now he’s marketing Focus through word of mouth and personal connections. “We don’t want to scale it up too fast and too large. It’s really organic growth within the next 12 to 18 months,” he said.

Jet-a-porter Puts the Focus on Dressing for Holiday, Adventures

HOLIDAY READY: Net-a-porter is putting more focus on holiday wear as it looks to answer to the needs of an increasingly global and mobile consumer who is big on experiences, travel and her social media image.
The e-tailer has launched a new category, Jet-a-porter, offering a curated selection of resort, swimwear and ski clothing. According to the company, skiwear has increased by more than half since last year. Given its significant growth trajectory, it made up almost three-quarters of Net’s Cruise 2017 buy.
“We’ve seen major growth year-on-year since launching the sports category, Net-a-sporter, in 2014 and we don’t see this slowing down any time soon,” said Elizabeth von der Goltz, Net’s global buying director.
She said that among the best-selling brands were Fendi, Perfect Moment, best known for their onesies, Moncler Grenoble and the knitwear label Chinti and Parker, which recently created an exclusive capsule for the retailer.

She also noted a shift in consumer behavior and the increased importance of experiences as drivers of the new trend.

Adidas Opens Largest Originals Store Globally in Chicago With Focus on Local Community

Thursday’s opening of the Adidas Originals flagship in Chicago will be the largest in the world, and the seventh one in the U.S.
With nearly 5,000 square feet of shoppable space, the 10,000-square-foot store at 1532 North Milwaukee Avenue is taking a hyper-local approach. In the never-ending chase to bridge the online community with the in-store experience, the company is playing up the city’s heritage through design accents. A fitting room reflects the materials and route of the L train, with walls wrapped with ribbed brush steel reminiscent of the elevated line’s cars. There is also a bench that is modeled after the ones found in all CTA stations.
The city’s transit system was also the inspiration for custom signs displayed throughout the store, which are similar to the ones displayed on the L train line and in its stations. The Adidas versions direct shoppers to silhouettes from the brand’s past, highlighting the year each model made its debut and other information. Wednesday night’s opening party, featured performances from BJ The Chicago Kid, Knox Fortune and DJ ELZ. The site is near two other streetwear and sneaker stores, RSVP Gallery and Saint Alfred.
A Community Wall will highlight local events, concerts and releases

Guo Pei to Be Focus of SCAD Exhibition and Upcoming Rizzoli Book

EXHIBIT SET: The Savannah College of Art & Design has confirmed the dates for what will be Guo Pei’s first solo museum exhibition.
The show will bow Sept. 7 at SCAD FASH Museum of Fashion + Film in Atlanta, and will feature 30 of the designer’s intricate gowns, footwear and accessories, including the imperial yellow gown worn by Rihanna at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute Gala in 2015. Although the musician and designer have not collaborated since that most-photographed choice, the blizzard of publicity their pairing established two years ago introduced Pei’s work to millions.
SCAD is counting on a New York-based creative collective HOWL that includes three photographers who are alumni — Jim Lind, Patrick O’Brien and Elliot Ross — to capture Pei’s designs in a monograph. The fourth member Forest Woodward is the only non-SCAD graduate. While individually the lensmen have worked with Patagonia, Carhartt and National Geographic, among other well-known brands, this is the four-year-old group’s first major fashion undertaking. Due out in December by Rizzoli, the book will also be a first for the designer. Along with photos of archival pieces, there will be a total of 44 images including some shot on old plantations such

Big Slick: Celebs Gather in Kansas City to Focus on Family, Charity This Father’s Day Weekend

Back in 2010 I called two friends from my hometown of Overland Park, Kansas with an idea for a charity poker tournament. The friends were Paul Rudd and Jason Sudeikis, and the goal was to have fun with our family and friends while raising $ 50K or so for Children’s Mercy Hospital. It took nine weeks to plan. I named the event Big Slick, and celebrated as year one exceeded expectations both in regard to total money raised and the generosity of all those involved — including friends like Will Ferrell, Adam McKay, George Wendt and Will Forte who flew in for the cause.

This weekend marks the 6th annual Big Slick Celebrity Weekend fundraiser. It’s also Father’s Day. And while the holiday overlap wasn’t intentional, it beautifully highlights everything Big Slick has grown to be about over the past five years. The event has increased in size, awareness, donations and celebrity attendance, but it still remains all about family: those families impacted by childhood illness and seeking care from the incredible doctors and team at Children’s Mercy; as well as my own family — and those of fellow co-hosts Paul Rudd, Jason Sudeikis, David Koechner and Eric Stonestreet — who volunteer countless hours to make Big Slick and the more than $ 2.2MM it’s raised (a record $ 1MM in 2014) possible.

Throughout the months leading up to Big Slick, it really is a familial effort that makes it all happen. My sister Julie and brother-in-law Mark are on the organization board along with Paul’s mother and sister, Jason’s mom, David’s sister, Eric’s sister… not to mention volunteer committees full of countless childhood and college friends. It’s an annual family reunion of sorts that keeps us connected to our roots, introduces new friends to a city that we love, rallies the entire region around charity and continually humbles and inspires us — all while having fun.

The fun of Big Slick weekend includes a variety of fundraising events ranging from celebrity vs. celebrity softball on the field at Royals’ Kaufman Stadium to song and dance numbers and high-ticket auction items. However, the best part of the weekend is always away from the crowds. It’s the hours spent in the halls at Children’s Mercy. Those moments in the hospital are also what brings us, all the volunteers and our celebrity friends — most of whom have no personal connection to Kansas City or the Midwest — back to support Big Slick year after year. Once you meet the children and their parents, hear their stories, meet the nurses and staff… there’s no denying that it’s worth taking the weekend to help these individuals — even if it means being away from your own kids on Father’s Day in order to support these fathers.

There’s an incredible documentary called Inside Pediatrics that was filmed at Children’s Mercy last year, narrated by Paul Rudd and including a glimpse of Big Slick weekend. Whether you’re familiar with the Kansas City area or not, it’s a moving look at the current work being done in child medicine and the challenges faced by our neighbors impacted by illness. It’s what inspires me. This Father’s Day or any day — whether in your hometown or current town — I encourage you to find what inspires you to act. Making a difference could start with something as simple as an idea and phone call. To learn more about Big Slick, visit BigSlickKC.org or Crowdrise.com/BigSlick.

Try This Trick to Improve Focus

Are you having trouble focusing because the world is full of distractions? I have a brain trick that might help. I’ll get to that in a minute.

I have never been diagnosed with ADDHD. But I do have a massive problem with managing distractions. I have always had problems focusing on the uninteresting, but it feels as if the complexity of life in 2015 has tripled my problem.

To get a sense of the challenge, here’s what I did between 5-7 AM this morning.

– Wrote a Sunday comic about negotiating
– Wrote a Robots Read News comic
– Blogged about my co-writers, on three different topics
– Handled logistics for a speaking trip, one of several upcoming
– Solved two or three technical problems
– Studies up on RSS feeds and click-through rates
– Researched Tumblr to see if we lose traffic by hiding organic search
– Answered a continuous stream of email, text messages, and questions
– Read the comments on my blog
– Studied my site analytics looking for useful nuggets
– Worked through three other potential blog topics in my mind.
– Wrote this blog post while I was thinking of it (at around 9 AM)

And that is the START of my workday. I still have a movie script to tweak forward, a magazine cover photo-shoot to negotiate, check the unreleased app for my start-up (CalendarTree), prepare my argument for an upcoming political battle in California (which you will enjoy watching) and on and on.

Oh, and I invented a solution to a universal problem yesterday, and wire-framed it for an app. Today I will decide whether I should share it with my start-up team or wait until we release the new features already in the pipeline.

Now imagine all of that stuff in my head at the same time, along with my immediate bodily needs, plus my complicated social life.

Focus? I don’t even remember what it was like to have it.

So here’s my little trick when my mind is in fifty places and I need it to be in one place so I can accomplish a simple task right now:

I stare at my right hand.

Then I command my hand to do the thing I need it to do, which usually involves touching a keyboard or my phone. If I need to stand up and walk to another room, I hold my hand in front of me and literally follow it to my destination, never losing focus. I also have to repeat the task, aloud, while following my hand, as in “Feed the cat. Feed the cat. Feed the cat.” Otherwise I end up in the garage fixing something that popped into my head on the way to the cat’s bowl.

When things get extra-bad, I add profanity and shouting to the mix to help me focus. That sounds more like “FEED THE F***ING CAT!…FEED THE F***ING CAT!…FEED THE F***ING CAT!”

The reason my trick works, at least for me, is that focusing on my hand gets me out of my head. And since my hand is moving, and somewhat interesting compared to inanimate objects, I can hold my attention on it for short periods. Sometimes I make fists, or wiggle my fingers to keep my focus.

There’s an interesting balance between creativity and distraction. To be creative, you want lots of random thoughts coming and going on their own schedule. Because of my career, my brain wiring has been optimized for high flow-through of ideas. Turning it off is a challenge.

I’m interested to see if my trick would work for you. If you have a chance to try it, please let me know in the comments. (Assuming you can focus long enough to do it.)

Another trick I use to regain focus is exercise. When my body is too tired to move, my brain is willing to endure a higher level of boredom. So I usually schedule exercise for around noon to reboot my focus for the afternoon. I assume my experience would translate to you as well, but I don’t know for sure.

Other Interesting Things Today…

I predict that healthcare expenses will someday drop to 25% of their current level thanks to advances in medical devices. (I sometimes see the new stuff in beta when they pitch for funding, and WOW.) For example, check out a new digital stethoscope that promises to make a big difference.

Next, Is passion a key to success, or just another benefit of getting there? I know I get plenty excited when things work out for me. Vivian Giang helps us sort that out.

Next, would you order take-out food more often if you could watch the delivery guy’s progress on your app, like Uber? I know I would. The comfort of knowing exactly when your food is coming is a psychological game-changer. This start-up got that part right.

3D printing is getting scary. Now you can print at the molecule level and create mechanical sensors with no moving parts. I wonder if 3D printing will be the only way people acquire household goods in the future.

Summer Movies Like 'Neighbors,' "Wish I Was Here' Focus On Transition From 20s To 30s

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Films about transitioning to adulthood have been a Hollywood staple for years. Some of today’s biggest stars got their start as 20-somethings in mostly carefree coming-of-age movies.

But what about the often more complicated progression from our 20s to 30s? There have generally been fewer of those treatments on the big screen — that is, until now. This summer, charming indies and raunchy comedies — including this weekend’s “Neighbors” — explore what could be one of life’s most challenging decades, but always with humor and also some surprising box office potential for studios.

While the 30s can be a satisfying time, full of firsts like marriage, buying a home and having children, the period can also bring tough crossroads both personally and professionally.

Yet films like “Neighbors” and the upcoming “Happy Christmas” and “Wish I Was Here” highlight the humor in common 30s plights while offering everyday relevancy to audiences in that age group.

In “Neighbors,” a couple (Seth Rogen and Rose Byrne) and their newborn baby buy their first house, but their life is disrupted when a fraternity (led by Zac Efron) moves in next door.

“Yes, there are ridiculous, outrageous jokes,” says Dave Karger, chief correspondent of movie ticket-seller Fandango. “But there’s also real poignancy there and very relatable characters in their 30s.”

In “Happy Christmas,” due in July, an irresponsible 20-something (Anna Kendrick) moves in with her 30-something brother (Joe Swanberg), who has a 2-year-old with his wife (Melanie Lynskey), a stay-at-home mom who starts writing a trashy novel to ease her boredom.

A decade after Zach Braff tackled tragedy as a 20-something in “Garden State,” he portrays love and loss in his 30s in July’s “Wish I Was Here,” which follows a struggling actor (Braff) who must homeschool his two kids after his father’s cancer worsens and he can no longer afford private school. Kate Hudson plays his wife, a woman who hates her job, but must stick it out to provide for her family.

“What that age group is going through, it’s not just a wacky high school night out or a college first love,” says Karger. “The particular themes, like an early mid-life crisis, are really interesting.”

Character-based films have never been an easy sell for studios or audiences, notes Karger. “The main audience that you think of at the theater is teen boys and 20-somethings.”

But the 25 to 39-year-old demographic actually makes up the largest amount of frequent moviegoers.

In 2013, they equaled 23 percent of those who go to the movies more than once a month, according to the 2013 Theatrical Market Statistics Report by the Motion Picture Association of America. This age group was also highest in both 2011 and 2012.

Other films targeted for the 25-39 demo this summer include “Blended,” starring Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler; “Begin Again,” with Mark Ruffalo and Keira Knightley; and “They Came Together,” featuring Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd.

Though they won’t tally as much as the superhero flicks, films targeting 30-somethings can be among the most profitable because they don’t cost as much to make.

Additionally, “the good ones have a long shelf life,” says Alex Ben Block, senior film editor of The Hollywood Reporter. “With classic movies of the genre like ‘When Harry Met Sally.,’ ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ or ‘Bridget Jones’s Diary,’ you got a pretty good run in the theater and then in home video, DVD or digital.”

But initially, they’re often hard to market. It’s key, says Block, for studios to do a lot of screenings to ignite buzz — and hope for rave reviews, because people in this group still read reviews and are affected by them.

The stars’ likability and familiarity also matter, adds Block. “This audience is sophisticated. They aren’t going to the movies just to go.”

If “Neighbors” dominates on its opening weekend as expected (projections have it making nearly $ 50 million), could the studios’ view of these types of films change?

“Three years ago ‘Bridesmaids’ was a smash and now this summer there are all of these hard R-rated comedies,” says Karger. “It takes about two or three years to see the effect of a game-changing movie. If ‘Neighbors’ becomes this smash, then I think there will be more of an appetite at the studios for films of this type.”
