EXCLUSIVE: Saint Laurent Debuts New Retail Format in Former Colette Location

PARIS — Colette has left the building, but its spirit is alive and well: the space that housed the Paris concept store for 20 years will reopen on Saturday as Saint Laurent Rive Droite, a new retail format developed by creative director Anthony Vaccarello that will sell everything from Jean Prouvé chairs to Saint Laurent-branded condoms.
Billed as “a creative and cultural destination,” the new boutique and its sister unit on Rodeo Drive in Los Angeles, opening the same day, represent a departure for Saint Laurent, known for its minimal stores featuring acres of veiny marble and gleaming shelves.
In addition to offering a wide range of products — including limited-edition collaborations and rare books and vinyl — alongside women’s and men’s ready-to-wear and accessories, the Paris space will also house a takeaway coffee counter and a club that can be turned into an event space.
The ground floor is chockablock with novelty branded items including gold skateboards, yoga mats, water bottles, earphones, Frisbees, phone cases, lighters, stationery, matchboxes, cocktail sticks and USB keys — there will even be biscuits featuring founder Yves Saint Laurent’s drawings.
“The idea was to propose a larger vision of Saint Laurent beyond the clothes, accessories and campaigns,” Vaccarello

Former MLB Star Carl Crawford Says He’s Instrumental In Megan Thee Stallion’s Career

Former MLB Star Carl Crawford Signed Megan Thee Stallion

Megan Thee Stallion‘s meteoric rise to rap stardom has only been in the making for a couple of years, and the fanfare is well deserved on the heels of her debut studio album, Fever. The Houston rapper owes some of her success to former MLB player Carl Crawford, who explained recently that he signed her to his entertainment imprint.

TMZ Sports reports:

If you’re not familiar with Megan (shame on you) she and her hottie army are taking over the rap game with her debut album, “Fever,” which just dropped … and everyone from Drake to Juicy J is showing love.

Turns out Megan had a big-time ally helping her get to the top … she’s signed to Crawford’s label, 1501 Certified Ent, and when we talked to Carl he told us it’s not a one-off, he’s in the game to stay.

“We got Megan and we think she’s gonna be a huge star. And, not only her … we’re hoping we have other people come up through the system as well.”

Crawford played 15 years in the MLB making over $ 179 million in his career — and he tells us he’s spent a big part of his fortune to launch his record label.

“It was at least 7 figures, I’ll tell you that. And, that’s because I built a studio and all that other stuff.”

Crawford, a Houston native like Hot Girl Meg, was a four-time MLB All-Star, winning both the Gold Glove and Silver Slugger award in 2010.

Former United Nations Chief & Nobel Peace Prize Winner Kofi Annan Has Died

Kofi Annan visits the Netherlands

Source: Mischa Schoemaker/WENN.com / WENN

Former United Nations leader and Nobel Peace Prize winner Kofi Annan has died. The Ghanian national served as the UN chief from 1997 to 2006 and later worked on efforts to bring peace to Syria and the surrounding region.

From the Kofi Annan Foundation:

It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness. His wife Nane and their children Ama, Kojo and Nina were by his side during his last days.

Kofi Annan was a global statesman and a deeply committed internationalist who fought throughout his life for a fairer and more peaceful world. During his distinguished career and leadership of the United Nations he was an ardent champion of peace, sustainable development, human rights and the rule of law.

After stepping down from the United Nations, he continued to work tirelessly in the cause of peace through his chairmanship of the Kofi Annan Foundation and as chair of The Elders, the group founded by Nelson Mandela. He was an inspiration to young and old alike.

Annan, along with the UN, won the Nobel for humanitarian work in 2001 and that mission remained with him for the rest of his career.

His passion for the development of Ghana and other African nations extended beyond his time as a special envoy for the UN in Syria, and he was involved with a number of organizations covering climate concerns while remaining, as his foundation stated in their loving tribute, a “global statesman” of high regard.

Annan was 80.

Designers on the Sidelines: Former Stars Seek New Worlds

LONDON — Where are they now? Observing fashion from the sidelines — or plotting their next move?
After years — sometimes decades — of headlining major fashion houses, unprecedented numbers of design talents are no longer working in the 24/7 glare of the industry.
They’ve quit their jobs — or been sacked. Some are taking extended sabbaticals or focusing on their personal lives. Others have moved on to new industries, or are thinking of fresh approaches in a fast-changing fashion world.
Designers  who were once much fawned over and who are now on the sidelines include Riccardo Tisci, Alber Elbaz, Hedi Slimane, Stefano Pilati, Peter Copping, Francisco Costa, Rodolfo Paglialunga, Frida Giannini and Marco Zanini, to name a few. The latest left idle is Bouchra Jarrar, who exited Lanvin after showing just two collections for the house.
The cutthroat nature of the industry means big-name designers are treated like European Premier League football managers: No matter how talented you are, it’s one bad season, and you’re out, said professor Frances Corner, head of the London College of Fashion.
Industry observers — and those who work with designers — say it’s a sign of these fast-paced, digitally driven times, where the pressure is on to deliver multiple

A$AP Rocky Fires Back At Former Manager With Counter Lawsuit

A$ AP Rocky isn’t keen on settling. Especially in the case of his former manager Geno Sims, who says the Harlem rap star swindling him out of a cool $ 850,000 during the course of their working relationship.

In new documents obtained by The Jasmine Brand, the 27-year-old personality (real name Rakim Mayers) is countersuing Sims, alleging that Sims breached their contract by disclosing information about his finances, personal life and his business to others.

Rocky also attributes any confusion as to what Sims claims he’s owed to the new negotiation they reached when the PMF brought in a second manager circa 2011 to help with his burgeoning celebrity. He says the paperwork filed at the time of Sims’ termination in 2014 explicitly states he wouldn’t be giving him one more red cent.

It appears this issue will be heading to court in the near future.

Annette Worsley-Taylor, Former Creative Director of London Fashion Week, Dies at 71

LONDON — Annette Worsley-Taylor, a former creative director of London Fashion Week who helped reignite global interest in British fashion, died this week at the age of 71. The cause of her death was lung cancer, a British Fashion Council spokesman said.
Worsley-Taylor was a driving force in establishing London Fashion Week. After launching the New Wave exhibition at London’s Ritz Hotel in 1974, in order to introduce young British designers to the international market, she went on to found London Designer Collections in 1975. After establishing the collections, the executive went on to win funding from the British government’s Department of Trade and Industry, to support a newly formed British Fashion Council. After that, Worsley-Taylor established the London Designer Show in 1990, which the BFC called a “prototype” for London Fashion Week in its current form.
A combination of the seemingly scatty yet surprisingly steely, the tireless Worsley-Taylor was an integral part of the renaissance of London fashion in the early Eighties when the likes of BodyMap, Katharine Hamnett, Betty Jackson and, later, Rifat Özbek and John Galliano put the British capital back on the global fashion map as their shows became must-sees for international retailers. Former NFL standout running back Clinton Portis once made an infamous quip on sports radio in 2008 of “Portis pockets straight,” which would be a hilarious meme in today’s world. Yet things aren’t so straight for Portis nor his pockets after reports came out that the former Washington Professional Football Team star owes money to the IRS, a casino and a host of other creditors.

Portis, a two-time Pro Bowl selectee and University of Miami player, is being sought by the IRS, the MGM Grand Casino in Las Vegas, an auto dealer, and a mortgage company among others. The documents, uncovered by the University of Florida’s student newspaper, lists out a bevy of debt faced by Portis which includes home and car payments.

From The Independent Florida Alligator:

The Internal Revenue Service says former Washington Redskins star and Gainesville native Clinton Portis failed to pay more than $ 450,000 in federal income taxes.

According to documents, Portis failed to pay $ 401,432.18 in individual income taxes in 2006, when Portis was in his third season with the Redskins. He also failed to pay $ 57,187.61 in individual income taxes in 2010, according to the documents.

Portis also owes $ 287,178.56 to the MGM Grand Hotel in Las Vegas from May 2015, according to court testimony obtained by the Alligator. The former Gainesville High standout lists two properties in Gainesville.

Much of Portis’ trouble began in August 2014 after he faced foreclosure on one of his Florida homes. The Alligator reports that attempts from a private investigator to serve Portis papers yielded no results as he couldn’t be found.

Jay Z Wins Lawsuit Against Former Roc-A-Fella Engineer

Jay Z emerged victorious after a nearly one-year legal debacle with his former engineer.

According to The Hollywood Reporter:

Jay Z and Roc Nation have prevailed in a lawsuit from Chauncey Mahan, a sound engineer who participated in the recording of Vol 3… The Life and Times of S. Carter, which produced hit tracks like “Big Pimpin,” “Do it Again” and “Things That U Do.”

Mahan’s lawsuit came to a New York federal court in July 2014 after a dramatic episode.

After working with Jay Z in the late 1990s, classified as an independent contractor, Mahan kept masters, outtakes, and other unpublished material on his harddrive. Mahan says in 2000, he let executives at Roc-A-Fella know he was in possession of this material, but never received a response.

Then in 2014, Mahan claims that a “sting operation” was the tail end of Roc Nation’s request to meet at his storage facility in Los Angeles. He alleges that Jay Z’s reps called the Los Angeles Police Department to seize the music and accused him of being in possession of stolen property, but only after cataloging the inventory.

Mahan wasn’t charged with a crime, but he would then hit back with a lawsuit that sought a declaratory judgment under the Copyright Act that thanks to his original contributions and particular work status, he should be deemed a co-owner on 41 sound recordings.

On Wednesday, U.S. District Judge Lorna Schofield came back with an analysis of those claims, determining that Mahan had come to court too late.

Schofield gave three reasons why Mahan was time-barred from pursuing co-ownership: Roc-A-Fella’s registrations with the United States Copyright Office, the Albums’ packaging, and the absence of royalties all gave Mahan constructive notice or a reason to know of his injury well before he filed a lawsuit.

“Plaintiff asserts that a reasonable person would not necessarily have reason to know that royalties were owed to him in this situation,” writes the judge. “Considering the depth of Plaintiff’s experience in the music industry and the substantial commercial success of the Albums, this assertion strains credulity.”

Mahan’s argument that the statute of limitations only begins upon an express repudiation finds no favor with the judge nor the theory that the label’s copyrights to the albums didn’t necessarily mean it was the exclusive copyright holder for each and every song. Then, there’s the unpublished material. “Roc-A-Fella correctly asserts… that it owns the copyrights to the unpublished works as ‘derivative’ or ‘underlying’ parts of the Albums,” writes the judge.

Mahan also strikes out in an additional claim that Jay Z and his crew committed conversion and trespass to chattels — essentially stole — the masters, outtakes, and other unpublished material on his harddrive via the allegedly “sham” LAPD sting.

The judge finds that whatever Jay Z’s reps told to the cops — true or not — the communications were privileged. The judge notes there are other remedies to filing a false police report such as criminal prosecution for perjury. Almost needless to say, the LAPD has made no noise that it’s investigating the hip hop entrepreneur.

Mahan was represented by James Freeman. The defendants were repped by Andrew Bart at Jenner & Block.

Another win for Jigga Man.

Beats music service sued by former executive amid possible sale to Apple

Colombia's track cyclist Edwin Alcibiades Avila Vanegas uses a pair of Beats by Dr. Dre headphones at the Velodrome during the London 2012 Olympic Games(Reuters) – Beats Electronics, which is close to being sold to Apple Inc for $ 3.2 billion, has been sued by the founder of a music service Beats bought two years ago claiming he has been cheated out of his share of the company. David Hyman, the founder of the music subscription service MOG Inc, filed a lawsuit on Wednesday in Los Angeles superior court claiming he was purposely terminated so that Beats could avoid granting him his equity stake in the company. Hyman claims that as part of the agreement Beats made to buy MOG in 2012, he would have been granted, over a period of time, 2.5 percent of the outstanding equity interest in Beats if the company reached a market value of $ 500 million or more. Rapper Dr. Dre and legendary music producer Jimmy Iovine, the founders of Beats Electronics, were not named in the lawsuit.
