Diane von Furstenberg Receives International Rescue Committee Freedom Award

Diane von Furstenberg was recognized by the International Rescue Committee on Thursday evening with the organization’s Freedom Award at its annual gala, the Rescue Dinner. The designer visited refugees in June at the IRC’s offices in Alexandria, Greece, where she met IRC staff members and Syrian refugees, who were recovering from traumas experienced on their journeys while trying to reunite with their families in Northern Europe.
Earlier this week, von Furstenberg visited the New York Resettlement Office to participate in a refugee business development workshop, where she met with a Congolese woman who is committed to starting an ice cream business.
The IRC notes they award the Freedom Award to “individuals who have made extraordinary contributions in support of refugees, and who have championed the cause of liberty, individual freedom and dignity. Diane von Furstenberg, a legend in the fashion industry, is a dedicated philanthropist and an outspoken advocate for vulnerable people.”
It has previously been awarded to the likes of Michael Bloomberg, Sen. John McCain, George Soros, Kofi Annan, Madeleine Albright and Winston Churchill.

EXCLUSIVE: Diane von Furstenberg Designs Minnie Mouse’s Wrap Dress for TV Special

Who wouldn’t doubt that Diane von Furstenberg and Minnie Mouse would become fast friends?
For the prime-time ABC special Nov. 4 in celebration of Mickey and Minnie Mouse’s 90th anniversary, von Furstenberg has designed a wrap dress for Minnie Mouse.
“They asked me if I’d like to do a dress for her 90th birthday, and I said ‘OK,’” said von Furstenberg. “Obviously she’s an icon and she had to have a wrap dress. I made a wrap that had lots of different cutouts so we could play with her dots and the colors of the dot and a lot of godets.”
Minnie Mouse’s dress was created by using a 100 percent silk faille fabric in white and black and hand-embroidering sequins to create the mix of polka-dot designs. The dress was sewn by hand in New York, taking 15 people nearly 35 hours to complete.
Long considered a fashion icon, Minnie has been a muse for designers, inspiring new collections and appearing in magazines and runway shows all over the world. Her classic polka-dot ensemble has been continually reimagined by the industry through the decades. Minnie Mouse, who has a reputation for being cute, playful and flirtatious, has often been portrayed as a dancer

Diane von Furstenberg, Anna Wintour, and Fossil Host the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Design Challenge Cocktail

cfda cocktail

The race is officially back on. Fashion month is long gone—or rather, over by just a few days—and the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund competition has kicked back into high gear. Earlier tonight at the One World Trade Center gallery, perched high above the city, designers mingled with a glittering array of A-listers for a cocktail party hosted by Diane von Furstenberg and Anna Wintour in celebration of the Fashion Fund Design Challenge underwritten by Fossil. Each candidate in this year’s class was challenged to come up with a design appropriate for a cultural event on the fall calendar, an endeavor that proved to be both fun and enlightening.

“It got us thinking about movement and something that could be for cocktail,” said Baja East’s Scott Studenberg and John Targon of their ensemble inspired by the New York City Ballet’s fall gala. “We referenced a lot of choreographers,” explained the duo of their cream-on-cream tonal look sported by NYCB principal dancer Sara Mearns.

Twirling among the nominees were a slew of previous CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund contestants, including Paul Andrew, Jennifer Fisher, Prabal Gurung, and the Orley trio. Having gone through the process, did they have any words of wisdom? “Take a deep breath and enjoy it because you miss it when it’s over,” said Irene Neuwirth in a Rosie Assoulin jumpsuit punctuated with her own jewelry. That sentiment was echoed by fellow jewelry designer Monique Péan, who said, “Have fun! It’s an incredible experience.”

Also taking in the designs were style-setters including Danai Gurira, whose play Eclipsed is currently at the Public Theater’s LuEsther Hall; Alexa Chung; and Cush Jumbo, who’s currently in New York filming The Good Wife and enjoying autumn in the city. “I love the in-between phase [of fall],” beamed Jumbo in Michael Kors and Chanel. “It’s my favorite time for experimenting. I’ll be layering up some Giambattista Valli with Michael Kors to set.”

Chung, who was photographed alongside former finalist Pamela Love of the 2011 competition, offered up some words of wisdom she learned from another It Brit, designer Erdem Moralioglu. “I once asked Erdem, because I was thinking of starting my own thing, and his words to me were to not deviate from yourself and trust your instincts.”

Jonathan Simkhai’s blush strapless dress elegantly wrapped around his date, Wallis Currie-Wood. “I love corsets!” exclaimed the actress, who was also joined by her Tony-winning beau, Alex Sharp. “It rekindles that old-world glamour and makes you feel both sexy and womanly, but also modest and comfortable in your own skin.” Simkhai agreed, adding that the competition has forced him to “come up with different ideas and go outside the box.”

As Eva Zuckerman, Brett Heyman, Ryan Roche, and countless other CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund alums chatted with the present class, all were talking about The Fashion Fund’s move to Amazon. “They get Amazon, which is an amazing medium!” exclaimed Veronica Miele Beard, adding that this year’s contestants should “use it to their greatest advantage. It’s everywhere.”

One place the all-reaching network might not have been was the Black Rock Desert in Nevada for Burning Man, which is where contestant Thaddeus O’Neil landed for his challenge. “I had to go to Burning Man even though it was the week of my women’s Spring show,” joked O’Neil, adding, “It was an adventure I had to take.” So how did the designer interpret the experience? Through a bevy of color, print, and texture on his model, the artist and poet Cleo Wade. “It was a natural fit,” said O’Neil of his date. “Anyone that loves words the way she does, I have an immediate affinity for them.”

With the competition heading out West next week to present their looks in a group fashion show, does the perennially sun-kissed designer have any plans outside of the competition? “To go surfing with my friends out in Malibu.” It seems as if O’Neil might have the right idea, because as Zuckerman says: “The worst of it is over and the best is yet to come.”

Diane von Furstenberg and Joel Horowitz: Job Done

JOB DONE: Following a report in WWD Friday that Joel Horowitz had exited Diane von Furstenberg as cochairman, von Furstenberg and Horowitz said in a joint statement that, “We joined forces in 2012 to strengthen the DVF infrastructure and find the perfect ceo. In April, we accomplished that by bringing Paolo Riva on board. We are proud of the strides we have made and look forward to seeing the company continue to thrive upon the foundation we have built.”
It was unclear when Horowitz exited DVF, although sources said it was May or June. At the time he joined the company, he said he was looking forward to “working with the management team to further grow the business.” Given his experience taking Tommy Hilfiger Inc. public, and proven ability to lead a public firm, there has been much speculation that the ultimate prize for DVF was an initial public offering.
While Horowitz’s departure doesn’t rule out that possibility, it does presume that an IPO isn’t in the immediate future for DVF. Riva has said his priority for the company is to “start to build a strategy for the brand and what it will look like in years to come.” Under Horowitz’s tenure,

Diane von Furstenberg Resort 2016

Though Diane von Furstenberg’s creative director Michael Herz called the collection “just really easy resort pieces,” an aura of controlled bohemianism ran through. Prints and languid lines anchored the lineup, with mixed patterns — florals of contrasting scale or mixed with dots; an indigo woodblock appropriated from a vintage kimono find — used for long skirts, wide trousers and a new take on a wrap dress, an apron style.

While coordinating sweatshirts and pants in engineered prints had an Eighties look-good-at-the-airport vibe, the prevailing mood harkened to the prior decade, particularly several jumpsuits. Designed to look like blouse-and-fluid trouser combinations, these veered smartly from boho toward a Seventies-by-way-of-Forties vibe.

Diane von Furstenberg Celebrates Belgian Fashion With BOZAR and MAD Brussels

DVF ALL ABOUT BRUGGE: Diane von Furstenberg will be back in her hometown of Brussels later this week to help BOZAR and MAD Brussels celebrate Belgian fashion. The designer will speak about her role as a woman in the business of fashion on Thursday with Anne Chapelle, chief executive officer of Ann Demeulemeester and Haider Ackermann, at Belgium’s oldest and largest arts center. Their discussion is timed to tie into Friday’s official opening of “The Belgians: An Unexpected Fashion Story,” an exhibition that explores the work of 100 designers from pioneers to current players like Raf Simons, Martin Margiela and Walter Van Beirendonck.
One of von Furstenberg’s signature wrap dresses will be featured in the exhibition. She has created an exclusive “Splatter Paint Multi Print” version from a Seventies print that was inspired by Jackson Pollock’s drip paintings. There are 200 limited-edition dresses that will be sold in von Furstenberg’s boutiques in Brussels, Anvers and Knokke starting Friday. That retail launch will coincide with her chat with Belgian designer Tim Coppens, an event meant to strengthen economic development of Brussels’ fashion and design. Their Q&A is part of the second edition of Madifesto, an initiative of MAD Brussels center of fashion
