Marta Minujín, Esteban Cortazar, Cesar Reyes and Julio Reyes Copello Honored at El Museo del Barrio Gala

THE ART OF THE MATTER: Thursday’s El Museo del Barrio gala turned out to be a record-breaking occasion, generating $ 1.1 million for the museum.
Guests like Maria Eugenia Maury, Ágatha Ruiz de la Prada, Yolanda Santos, Monika McLennan and Eugenia Sucre ramped up the fashion at the 25th annual event at The Plaza. Conceptual and performance artist Marta Minujín was honored with the Excellence in the Arts award. In honor of her vibrant art, there were centerpieces of neon-colored geometric-shaped Styrofoam, and larger sculptural pieces lined the south side of the ballroom. Vera Wang Celebrates Chinese Heritage and American Upbringing at China Institute’s Blue Cloud Gala

BIG IN CHINA: Vera Wang and Ron Perelman were among the honorees at the China Institute’s annual Blue Cloud gala Thursday night.
The gathering at Cipriani’s lower Broadway location in the Cunard Building was meant to center on the Institute’s commitment to advancing understanding and deepening trust between China and the U.S. Ning Yuan, chairman and president of China Construction America, and Robert Hong Xiao, chief executive officer of Perfect World Co. Ltd. were also honored, as well as New York Gov. Andrew Coumo, who wasn’t able to attend the black tie dinner.
Beforehand, China Institute chairman Chien Chung Pei, better known as “Didi,” said of the honorees, “They share the spirit and mission of China Institute to shape positive and strong U.S.-China relations through education, culture and business.”
Derek Lam also turned up to support Wang. She later told the crowd how growing up in the U.S., her parents Cheng Ching and Florence Wang encouraged her to embrace American culture, never allowing her to forget her Chinese heritage. That delicate balance was what provided her and her brother “with such a unique view of the world and a sincere appreciation for both cultures,” she said.

Charlize Theron, Brie Larson Attend Porter’s Incredible Women Gala 2017

Porter, Net-a-porter’s print magazine, on Wednesday held its second annual Incredible Women Gala at NeueHouse West Hollywood, in association with Estée Lauder. Hosted by editor in chief Lucy Yeomans and Universal chairman Donna Langley, the event drew Charlize Theron, Brie Larson, Elizabeth Banks, Mary J. Blige, Melanie Griffith, Raquel Welch, Kate Bosworth and more.
The Incredible Women list, now in its third year, grew out of a cover line on Porter’s first issue. It has since spawned a talk series that began with Christy Turlington Burns in 2014 and has included American Ballet Theater principal dancer Misty Copeland, film director Sofia Coppola and Serpentine chief executive officer Yana Peel. The first gala was held last year in London at the V&A Museum.
Partnering with Langley, who was profiled in the magazine in the past, made sense since this year’s list of 50 women was focused on the entertainment industry. The timing of this year’s gala comes when women in the industry have banded together in support of speaking out against sexual harassment. The magazine commissioned women including Copeland, Larson and the organizers of the Women’s March, Tamika Mallory and Bob Bland, to write open letters touching upon crucial issues facing women in

The Guggenheim International Gala, to be held Nov. 4 and 5 and underwritten by Dior, is divided into two nights of arty entertainment for two different crowds. The first night, Grimes will perform for the pre-party hosted by the Young Collectors Council. The second night, the gala dinner for serious patrons will feature a preview of Tom Gold Dance’s new adaptation of the ballet “November Steps.”
There’s a connection between the ballet and the museum: Currently on view through Jan. 6 is the centennial retrospective “Alberto Burri: The Trauma of Painting.” Burri’s wife, dancer and choreographer Minsa Craig, created “November Steps” in 1973, when it premiered at the Teatro dell’Opera Roma in Rome, set to Tōru Takemitsu’s 1967 composition of the same name. Burri designed the costumes and set based on his  “Cretti” series of cracked reliefs in monochrome white.
Attendees of the GIG will see a preview of Tom Gold’s new take on the original ballet, with costumes and set inspired by Burri’s originals. Dior’s Returns as Sponsor of the Guggenheim International Gala

For the third consecutive year, Dior is sponsoring the Guggenheim International Gala in New York. The two-night art party, known as the GIG, supports the museum’s operations, including exhibitions, educational programs and the landmark building. To be held Nov. 4 and 5, the first night is a pre-party — read: younger, hipper — hosted by the Young Collectors Council that will feature a performance by Grimes, the Canadian producer, singer and songwriter also known as Claire Boucher, whose fourth album is due out this fall. The second night is a benefit dinner  honoring artists On Kawara (in memoriam) and Monir Shahroudy Farmanfarmaian, both the subjects of recent exhibitions, and Colombian artist Doris Salcedo, whose work is on view at the museum through Oct. 12.
Since coming on as a sponsor, Dior has infused the GIG with a new energy. In 2013 DJ Richie Hawtin (aka Plastikman) performed at the pre-party. Last year, it was British indie band The xx.

Palais Galliera, Vogue Paris Set Second Gala

MUSEUM QUALITY: How’s this for a shopping list: Seven rare Madame Grès couture dresses, one Paco Rabanne, eight Martine Sitbon pieces, photo prints by Deborah Turbeville, drawings by the fashion illustrator Antonio Lopez, for a total of 36 pieces.
Curator Olivier Saillard was able to make those purchases for the fashion museum at the Palais Galliera, where he is director, with the support of the Vogue Paris Foundation, a fund established last year by the French magazine with an annual grant of 100,000 euros, or $ 111,063 at current exchange.
Saillard and Emmanuelle Alt, editor in chief of Vogue Paris, raised around 200,000 euros, or $ 222,126, with the foundation’s second edition of the gala scheduled for Monday in the neo-Renaissance palace’s striking peristyle.
Saillard said the museum’s affiliation with the fashion magazine has opened the door to a windfall of donations coinciding with the gala — 36 pieces from houses such as Chanel, Celine, Hermès, Chloé, Fendi, Versace and Givenchy.
“The concept remains the same; houses come; buy tables,” Alt said. “It is important to support French fashion and couture. It’s really about the heritage and to celebrate Paris.”
Alt noted that the magazine has no say in the museum’s acquisition policy, but it is fully

Valentino, Patti Smith, and More Celebrate New York City Ballet’s Spring Gala and Mel Gibson, Charlize Theron, and Other Stars Come Out for the Mad Max: Fury Road Premiere

Valentino Garavani and Olivia Palermo

It has been a multicultural week on the gala circuit: Monday at the Met, all eyes were on China’s enduring influence on fashion; last night at New York City Ballet’s Spring Gala, the spotlight was on Denmark, birthplace of the great nineteenth-century choreographer, August Bournonville. Known for his effervescent footwork and repertory rich in pantomime, Bournonville might seem a world away from the modernist compositions by George Balanchine, the visionary founder of NYCB. In the spirit of spring renewal, the evening’s anticipated premiere was a revival of the Dane’s 1836 story ballet, La Sylphide, and a crowd including Valentino Garavani, Elettra Wiedemann, Patti Smith, and Ansel Elgort arrived to take it all in.

“I have a soft spot for Romantic ballets,” confessed Indre Rockefeller in daffodil yellow Delpozo, looking every bit the former dancer she is. Justin Peck, the company’s wunderkind resident choreographer and a soloist, paused to underscore the importance of the classics. “I actually haven’t seen any of the rehearsals for the piece, so I’m excited to just sit back and be a spectator,” he said. Wiedemann glided by in blush pink Lanvin, and on her feet? “Lanvin—not pointe shoes, thankfully,” she said with a laugh, showing off a sparkly sandal with a sensible heel. Growing up, her mother, Isabella Rossellini, used to take her to the ballet every year; Olivia Palermo, who seemingly walked out of Botticelli’s Primavera in a botanical Valentino dress, also has a balletomane in the family. “My mother just came last night! She has season tickets.”

Moments later inside the David H. Koch Theater, the curtain rose to reveal the first piece on the program, Bournonville Divertissements, a tasting menu of buoyant, jump-heavy excerpts by the choreographer. After a brief intermission on the terrace with champagne and a waning sunset, it was time for La Sylphide, staged by the company’s Danish-born ballet master in chief, Peter Martins. Set in Scotland, the story centers on a tartan-clad cad (a triumphant Joaquin De Luz) who jilts his betrothed for a winged sylph (Sterling Hyltin); she arrives by window and departs (to chuckles from the audience) by chimney. Their love affair ends in tragedy when he wraps a scarf—secretly cursed by a witch—around his paramour, causing her to perish, her delicate wings fluttering to the ground.

Heavy stuff for a spring night, but the mood was light at the post-show dinner on the promenade. The ethereal Wendy Whelan, who retired last fall from the company and appears at the Joyce Theater later this month, gushed about Hyltin’s performance, adding, “It’s my birthday—48!” Andrew Rannells, in the midst of filming the fifth season of Girls, chatted with Tiler Peck, a City Ballet principal whose husband, Robert Fairchild, stars in Broadway’s An American in Paris. “He plays the role that Gene Kelly did in the film,” Garavani explained. “I’m going to see it next week!” And with that, like a corps of winged sylphs, the guests dispersed into the night.

Meanwhile, on the West Coast, a very rainy Hollywood evening set the stage for the premiere of Mad Max: Fury Road. As action-packed as the movie was, it didn’t outshine the equally exciting red carpet. Hollywood veteran and star Charlize Theron shed her movie look and opted for a clean black and white dress, while newcomer costar Zoë Kravitz looked elegant in a Valentino gown, paired well with her signature braids. The biggest surprise of the night was when original Mad Max star, Mel Gibson, came out to show his support for the newest chapter of the legacy. As guests filed into the theater, Riley Keough in a leather dress, stopped for a few selfies with fans, then joined Abbey Lee, in a Balmain jumpsuit, inside.

As the credits rolled, the night was just beginning. Guests ventured across the street for the after-party, where in one corner, Rosie Huntington-Whiteley stunned in a sparkling Rodarte skirt and top. Across the room, costar Nicholas Hoult was seen laughing and talking amongst friends. Mad Max’s star-studded cast definitely failed to disappoint, both on the screen and on the carpet.

The 10 Best Fashion Instagrams of the Week, from the Met Gala to Louis Vuitton’s Resort Show in Palm Springs

best fashion instgrams

The Met Gala came and went this week, leaving a trail of glitter and tulle in its wake (as well as a rather remarkable rear view, if one takes Kanye Wests snap of a retreating Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez into consideration), and the chic set packed up for Palm Springs and Nicolas Ghesquières cruise collection for Louis Vuitton soon after; posing prettily on the grounds of Bob and Dolores Hope’s John Lautner–designed estate or the nearby Parker hotel. Some stepped out of the action to catch some sun (or dodge it, under an oversize straw hat) while others made a chase for monochromatic ensembles in seasonal verdant shades. Either way, spring has decidedly arrived.

Cass Bird Photographed the Best Met Gala Party: The Bathroom

Met Gala celebrities ladies bathroom photos

Why did photographer Cass Bird spend the entire Met Gala camped out in the loo? Because “that’s where they say the fun’s at,” the New York–based artist explained by phone. “Bathrooms typically are the place where girls get to be real with themselves.”

For Bird, however, the scene was mostly just surreal: Julianne Moore, Lady Gaga, and the Olsen twins were there; models were helping each other in and out of their labyrinthine gowns (“there was, like, boob-tape happening”); and even boys were allowed. “I was like really having an out-of-body experience. I was pretty catatonic in a way. It was a such a visual, energetic overload.”

An off-kilter foil to the Met’s poised red carpet makes perfect sense for Bird, who is known for her unvarnished and playful photographs. Bird describes her latest project as a visual dream come true. “It was a lot of beauty in a really small space. It was fucking bananas all in one bathroom,” she said. “And I loved it. I would do it again.”

The Best Accessories from the Met Gala

Dakota Johnson's Chanel bag

Dressing for the Met Gala, as demonstrated on Monday night, is a head-to-toe affair. There was a lot of emphasis up top for “China: Through the Looking Glass” as tiaras gave way to headdresses (Rihanna, Lady Gaga, Karen Elson) and jeweled hair, à la Kate Hudson and Anna Ewers. Pendant earrings, many made of thematically appropriate precious jade, swung dazzlingly from famous lobes, and more than one necklace swung elegantly down the wearer’s back. Some of the young set even sported elaborate septum rings—a category of jewelry that at one time wouldn’t have been spoken in the same sentence as gala, but has now found a place on the red carpet—but perhaps more surprising was the revival of Judith Leiber’s jeweled miniaudières. Once a symbol of nineties OTT excess, these artful objects seem to be finding a new audience among a new set of glitterati. Not to be outdone, statement bags were close at hand, whether in the form of Dakota Johnsons doll pendant bag from Chanel, or a jewel box of a clutch, boasting the bearer’s name in Chinese.

At Met Gala, ‘HONY’ Photographer Shoots Pics Of Catering Staff And Others Who Don’t Get A Spotlight

Brandon Stanton, the photographer behind the immensely popular Humans of New York site, has a special talent for getting strangers to open up to him. And while he usually prefers to shoot and interview ordinary people he encounters on the streets of the city — so far, he’s photographed more than 5,000 New Yorkers — last night, he focused his lens on one of the most extraordinary events in Manhattan: the Met Gala. Unsurprisingly, while there was no shortage of star power at the ball, Stanton’s interest remained in those whose faces and names you don’t know off the top of your head.

Beyoncé’s Met Gala 2015 Dress Is Barely There

Our hearts started racing the very second this sketch of Beyoncé’s rumored Met Gala 2015 dress surfaced on Twitter. It was more than we could ever imagine for the fabulous fête. Then the moment we had been waiting for finally arrived.

Queen Bey teased her look on Instagram before hitting the red carpet and there’s very little that she left to the imagination.

The see-through dress is embellished with sequins and glittering rhinestones in all the right places. Nude ankle-strapped pumps and a high ponytail make the entertainer appear 10 feet tall.

Sorry, Kim Kardashian but Beyoncé wins the sheer style game.

The Best 2015 Met Gala Red-Carpet Trends

Photo: Getty Images (2)

The stars have had their night at the museum, and the red carpet is rolled up for now, but if this year’s gala is anything to go by, then the fashion moments are likely to reverberate into tomorrow morning and beyond. While many touched on the theme, “China: Through the Looking Glass,” only a few embraced a larger-than-life idea of chinoiserie. One stylish attendee who took cues from the impressive Ming-floral vase sculpture in the Met’s great hall? Ivanka Trump whose exaggerated train mimicked the iconic blue and white ceramics.

Ultimately the majority of guests channeled the aesthetic in a less literal way, by wearing red, and it came in every shade imaginable; scarlet, auburn, and vivid ruby. Amal Clooney even managed to bring some of the grandeur of last year’s Charles James theme with her Maison Margiela couture look.

The best floral motifs of the night were elegant and restrained, like those worn by Bee Shaffer (hers was by Alexander McQueen) and Marissa Mayer. Jennifer Lopez, Reese Witherspoon, and Gigi Hadid led the way for old-world glamour in glittering body-skimming dresses, and Sienna Miller showed that tomboys can do sparkles too in her embellished trouser suit.

And speaking of wearing the pants, pajama dressing took on a new life thanks to Jenna Lyons, and Dao-Yi Chow and Maxwell Osborne of Public School. Elsewhere, Liya Kebede and Diane Kruger eschewed diaphanous dresses for trousers, as did Lady Gaga. Naturally the rule-breaking pop star put her own spin on the idea though, finishing off her look with a lattice-like cape. And she wasn’t the only one to go the superheroine route: Janelle Monáe, Lisa Airan, and Hannah Bagshawe wore capes as a dramatic alternative to the straightforward floor-length gown.

Some of the most daring red-carpet wins of the night alluded to the skin in unexpected ways. Beyoncé and Kim Kardashian West both glided in wearing frothy, ethereal, and undeniably sexy confections that relied on carefully placed sequins and feathers—Givenchy and Roberto Cavalli by Peter Dundas respectively. In a gorgeous Calvin Klein Collection dress that had intricate lacing up the side, Kendall Jenner showed that the very notion of a plunging neckline might have shifted for good.

Here Are The Sarah Jessica Parker Memes From The 2015 Met Gala

Sarah Jessica Parker showed up to the 2015 Met Gala in a headdress — so of course the Internet made the IRL Carrie Bradshaw into a meme.

She’s no stranger to extravagant headpieces, especially when it comes to the most glamorous ball of the year. Back in 2013, Parker donned a decked-out mohawk for the Punk gala.

In anticipation of tonight’s theme, “China: Through The Looking Glass,” there were worries that celebrities and stylish influencers would flood the red carpet with offensive and ridiculous garb. While some starlets kept their cool and avoided the topic at hand, there were (of course) instances of outrageous looks that surpass the point of judgement.

Enter in SJP’s Philip Treacy headpiece, which had jaws dropping and social media firing up with memes comparing her to various cartoon characters, like Jafar from “Aladdin.”

See the memes that prove that the Internet clearly has no chill.

Alexa Chung, will.i.am, Alexander Wang, and More Party in Pj’s Before the Met Gala

Photographed by Kevin Tachman

Call it the party before the party. While this weekend saw the jet set head westward to Las Vegas for the Mayweather/Pacquiao fight, those on the East Coast were bracing themselves for Monday night’s Met Gala. And what better way to get in the spirit of this year’s exhibit, “China: Through the Looking Glass,” than with a traditional dinner at New York City’s oldest dim sum parlor, Nom Wah Tea Parlor. Vogue’s Sally Singer hosted the evening which brought together an eclectic crew consisting of models Bella Hadid, Constance Jablonski, and Xiao Wen Ju; designers Alexander Wang, Erdem Moralioglu, and Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez; and front row staples Alexa Chung, Olivia Palermo, and Emily Ratajkowski.

The dress code? Pearl River–fabulous acting as an homage to the soon-to-be-closed Chinese emporium on lower Broadway. And the guests delivered—Phoebe Collings-James looked runway-ready, but stealing the show was the sensational Chloë Sevigny. Between bites of pan-fried noodles and vegetable dumplings, sips of St. Germain and Bombay Sapphire East cocktails—the custom gin and tonic bar proved to be a popular offering—and the jeroboams of Moët & Chandon sparkling with the Vogue logo in Swarovski crystals, Banks, Miguel, Aziz Ansari, and Grimes took in the charming setting and delectable cocktails on offer. After dinner and a champagne toast, guests including André Leon Talley, Hamish Bowles, Lisa Love—with daughter Laura—and Ladyfag flocked to the street to take in a spectacular lion dance performance by Chinatown Community Young Lions. Consider Saturday’s activities training for Monday night.

Need Some Met Gala Inspiration? Look No Further Than Anna May Wong

03-piccadilly-anna-may-wong-3

Among the dresses you will soon be able to see at “China: Through the Looking Glass” (the Anna Wintour Costume Institute exhibition opening with Monday night’s Met Gala) is a high-necked silk and satin Belle Epoque–era gown, with a dragon fashioned out of silver and gold sequins that curves about the contours of the sleek silhouette and spans its entire floor-skimming length. The “dragon lady robe,” as it was called, may have been created by longtime Paramount Studios costume designer Travis Banton, but was worn indelibly (and made famous) in the 1934 film Limehouse Blues by Anna May Wong, an actress who spent her entire career navigating a largely xenophobic industry, memorably resisting such labels as “exotic,” “Oriental,” and yes, “dragon lady.”

As the first Chinese-American actress to gain international recognition in film, her directors may have relegated her to subservient and stereotypical roles, but it was due to that same studio-projected “exoticism” that she was outfitted in some of the most extraordinary costumes of her time. Back then, Westernized ideas of Far East dressing might have come from a naive place, but the fusion often yielded fantastic results (be they made of metal, fringe, sequins, beads, or all of the above) that outshone that of her Caucasian costars—and because she began as a star of the silent screen, the clothes she wore became nothing less than a tool of visual expression.

Wong was simply doing what all trailblazers must: taking the roles that were offered her, while using everything she had at hand to communicate what she really meant. In her case, that meant a highly subversive statement, most often delivered in the form of what she wore. Wong’s influence has extended to entire collections (among other designers, John Galliano credits her as muse for his spring 1993 collection for Dior), and with her sartorial legacy holding sway over the Met exhibition, you’d do well to look to elements of her film costumes for your own red-carpet look come Monday night (or any red-carpet affairs thereafter). Here, five of her standout screen moments (from headdresses to alluring qipaos) in all their motion-picture glory.

Expand

Thief of Bagdad (1924)

Directed by Raoul Walsh
Costume designer: Mitchell Leisen
The weird and wonderful Arabian Nights–inspired fantasy replete with flying carpets and magic urns was said to have been Wong’s swashbuckler costar Douglas Fairbanks’s favorite of all his films. Wong played the part of a Mongol slave, but an unendingly glamorous one, seething and shimmering in a beaded and sequined halterneck dress with a fringed skirt. Her headpiece chicly framing her face like a pair of sprightly, yet ethereal butterfly wings, the so-called “slave” far outshone the lady over whose veiled and lounging figure Wong ever so slowly waved a massive feathery fan. Now that’s a Met Gala–worthy look if we ever saw one, fit for any other red carpet, or, for the daringly outré-minded bride, a walk down the aisle. (And we wouldn’t be surprised to see variations on that insect wing–like headpiece crowd-surfing the music festivals this summer.)

Expand

Piccadilly (1929)

Directed by Ewald André Dupont
Costume designer: uncredited
A star is born and then—well, no spoilers, let’s dwell instead on Wong’s shining moment in this 1929 British silent film. She’s cast as a dishwasher, but a rebellious, overqualified one who should really be onstage rather than in the kitchen of the Piccadilly Circus nightclub. Fired for distracting the others on staff with her dance routines, Wong’s character Shosho is then brought out front where she delivers a riveting dance performance, and all while clad in a scanty, armor-like costume that Barbarella and the robot double of Metropolis would fight over. Others might steal an element—the towering chandelier-esque topper, the breastplates, or the metallic hot pants, say—for it is doubtful that any mere mortal would dare imitate her entire look; but then again, Beyoncé or Lady Gaga just might.

Expand

Across to Singapore (1928)

Directed by William Nigh
Costume designer: David Cox
Shot when Hollywood movies were just as silent as the strong, silent types who starred in them, Across to Singapore told the story of a shipboard love triangle (no less than Joan Crawford and a pair of brothers, played by Roman Novarro and Ernest Torrence). Here, Wong is relegated to the blandly named character Singapore Woman, but she more than makes up for her lackluster casting, coolly tossing her demi-turbaned hair about on deck and strutting her stuff in all her midriff-baring, two-piece-attired, statement-choker-to-end-all-statement-chokers glory. Let’s just put it like this: Nobody is going to be stealing Joan Crawford’s prim bonnet or her dress, with its yards and yards of deathly chaste beribboned frill, to wear out on the town.

Expand

Shanghai Express (1932)

Directed by Josef von Sternberg
Costume designer: Travis Banton
Like her costar Marlene Dietrich, Wong played a “coaster”; that is, a woman who lives by her wits on the Chinese coast; that is, a courtesan; that is, an escort. In von Sternberg’s tale of intrigue aboard the storied train, Shanghai Lily (Dietrich) and Hui Fei (Wong) alternately scandalize and seduce their fellow passengers, Dietrich in her feather boa and dressing gowns, Wong devastating in equally slinky qipaos. The takeaway, from a fashion perspective: A little tailoring and polish in your look will connote enough refinement to allow you to get away with almost anything, and have a pretty delightful time while you do. “Don’t you find respectable people terribly dull?” Dietrich asks a shocked passenger, who is made even more so when Wong pointedly adds: “I must confess, I don’t quite know the level of respectability that you demand in your boardinghouse.

Expand

Tiger Bay (1934)

Directed by J. Elder Wills
Costume designer: uncredited
Wong’s character lords over the saloon she runs in Tiger Bay; so arresting is her look (a series of elegantly embellished qipaos), so sassy her demeanor, wouldn’t you know it? Things tend to go in her favor. And even when they don’t, she’s still utterly commanding in her capacious sleeves; sharp, lean silhouettes; and that so-graphically-rendered-it’s-almost-personified element of her qipao. The latter in particular may get some people thinking quite literally about this year’s Met exhibition; others may lean toward past, more Surrealistic years (Schiaparelli, anyone?); and still others might wonder if there’s a subtle zeitgeist already surfacing in the pre-fall collections—why, hello, Céline.

Fashion month might have concluded yesterday but the chic crowd showed no signs of slowing down earlier tonight in London. After a record-shattering presence at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute in 2011, “Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty” finally had its London homecoming at the Victoria and Albert Museum and officially opens on Saturday. But before the exhibit opens to the public, the museum hosted an elegant soiree filled with some of the designer’s best work on many of his famous friends, including cute couples Kate Moss and Jamie Hince, Victoria and David Beckham, and Livia and Colin Firth. Also taking in the lavish surroundings were actress Naomie Harris, Natalie Massenet, and a slew of stylish models including Erin O’Connor, Jacquetta Wheeler, and Stella Tennant. The most vivid peacock in the room? Singer FKA twigs whose rainbow feathered ensemble looked made for her.

Bob Dylan chronicles roots of his music at gala in his honor

Musician Bob Dylan speaks at the 2015 MusiCares Person of the Year tribute honoring Bob Dylan in Los AngelesBy Alex Dobuzinskis LOS ANGELES (Reuters) – Bob Dylan, known for playing concerts with barely a word spoken to his audience, gave a lengthy speech on Friday at a gala in his honor where he chronicled the roots of his music while also praising and ribbing famous figures. The 73-year-old Dylan, considered by many musicians and critics to be the best singer-songwriter of his time, spoke for 40 minutes at the Los Angeles event tied to this weekend's Grammy Awards, as he was named "person of the year" by the MusiCares charity. Former U.S. president Jimmy Carter handed Dylan the award after a night of performances of his songs, including "Knocking on Heaven's Door" and "Standing in the Doorway", by a cast of superstars. Beck and Sheryl Crow played harmonica, Jack White flew through a guitar solo, Bruce Springsteen jammed with Tom Morello, Norah Jones gave a bluesy piano performance and Los Lobos sang in Spanish.

Marina Abramovic Curates Another Gala Extravaganza, Has No Intention of Slowing Down

Marina Abramovic

Marina Abramovics 2010 mid-career MoMA retrospective, The Artist Is Present, propelled the Belgrade-born artist, an art world force since the seventies, into the cultural mainstream. In the five years since, Abramovic has integrated (if not ingratiated) herself into countless collaborations, sometimes giving the impression that Marina Abramovic is always present.

A very abridged survey of her past half-decade might look like this: Out of her MoMA show was born not only a 2012 documentary film, but also the Marina Abramovic Institute, a center devoted to teaching “the Abramovic Method” in Hudson, New York, where Lady Gaga studied before working with Abramovic on her 2013 flop, Artpop. In 2011, Abramovic and her fellow performance-art pioneer Robert Wilson staged a music-theater production at the Manchester International Festival called The Life and Death of Marina Abramovic, which transferred two years later to the Park Avenue Armory, where, incidentally, she will return this December to present an adaptation of J.S. Bach’s Goldberg Variations with pianist Igor Levit. Last summer, Abramovic premiered a new “durational performance” called 512 Hours at London’s Serpentine Gallery, followed by a solo show at Sean Kelly in New York this fall. Most recently, this past Saturday, she curated what was billed as an “unforgettable experience” for L.A.-based charity Art of Elysium’s eighth-annual Heaven Gala in an airplane hangar at the Santa Monica Airport, a project reminiscent of the 2011 MOCA gala at which Abramovic famously featured live human heads as centerpieces. In such a blur of contiguous Marina Moments, even genuine fans would be forgiven for experiencing some fatigue.

Abramovic herself is as eager as ever, however, and unperturbed by the perception that she is overexposed. “There are so many rules in the art world,” she said by phone last week en route to Los Angeles for Friday evening’s event. “I don’t like rules and I break them all the time. I don’t care if people think I’m overexposed. What I care about is if I’m going to run out of energy.” To prevent just that, Abramovic spends half her time “recharging,” whether at her home upstate or abroad in places like Brazil, where she plans to spend the next three months. “Overexposure is only a problem if you are drained of energy and cannot come up with new ideas. Every artist has to recognize that and know when to stop for a moment.”

Neither is she concerned that collaborating with commercial brands and pop-culture figures waters down her relevance outside of the circumscribed art world. “I divide the world into two parts: originals, and the ones who follow,” she explains. “Originals are the people who contribute new ideas and can come from any field: literature, music, fashion, poetry, filmmaking, art. It doesn’t matter.” The Art of Elysium gala, for instance, featured pajamas designed by Costume National’s Ennio Capasa, a musical performance by Moby, a DJ set by Elijah Wood, and a cocktail hour at which guests—among them Johnny Depp, Amber Heard, Usher, Camilla Belle, and Joaquin Phoenix—were invited to wear noise-canceling headphones provided by Samsung, which underwrote the evening so as to experience silence in a way that heightens the other senses. “Before it was the kings and popes and aristocrats [who sponsored art],” she says. “Now it’s businesses and corporations—and we need them.”

Purists might bemoan a Samsung-sponsored artwork, but in a world where Joan Didion stars in a Céline campaign and Joni Mitchell in a Saint Laurent one, is Abramovic’s willingness to fraternize with brands—and fashion brands in particular—really so offensive? The partnerships have certainly given her a larger platform than any other performance artist has enjoyed, enabling her to broadcast a message that is certainly loud, if not always clear. At this point, it seems publicity is part of Abramovic’s practice.

Returning to the Art of Elysium gala and all its related performances, Abramovic explains that the theme of the evening was “heaven.” “And I thought, ‘What is heaven for me?’” she says. “It is where the light and the dark meet.”

Katie Holmes Looked Like A Disney Princess At The Met Gala

Last night at the 2014 Met Gala, Katie Holmes showed up looking a LOT like Belle from “Beauty and the Beast.” The only thing that was missing from her outfit was a single rose.

Although the dress was elegant, we can’t seem to shake the fact that she resembles the Disney princess. Where are your white gloves, Katie?

The yellow-gold Marchesa ball gown draped off the shoulders, and it had several ruffles on the skirt and embellishments along the bodice. Holmes‘ beachy waves and bronze makeup rounded out this red carpet look.

We don’t blame you Katie because we wouldn’t mind dressing up like Belle for a night either.

Bold, Dark Lips Take Over The 2014 Met Gala Red Carpet

When the celebrities and designers showed up on the 2014 Met Gala red carpet, one of the first things we noticed were the bold lip colors. While there were definitely some great neutrals, oranges and pinks floating around, it was the dark, in-your-face lipsticks that made a glamorous statement.

Since these lip looks were paired with extravagant ensembles, you might think they’re impossible to wear. But, there’s always room for a vampy vibe in our beauty book.

Here are the top dark lipstick looks from the Met Gala that we don’t mind trying ourselves:

Blue-Purple

The trick to finding a lip color like Joan Smalls’ comes down to searching for those with a blue undertone. Although bold lips can stand on their own, a swipe of gold lip gloss on top will give your lips added glitz and glamour.

Try This: Make Up For Ever Rouge Artist Intense Lipstick in Satin Blueberry, $ 25

Brick Brown

adele exarchopoulos dark lip

French actress Adele Exarchopoulos might be an unknown face to you, but you’ll remember her after this. Exarchopoulos’ lips were filled in with chocolate-y goodness, and if you’re afraid that you’ll look a tad too ’90s with brown lipstick, use deep reds for a modern touch.

Try This: Bobbi Brown Lipstick in Black Raspberry, $ 25

Vampy Red

Beyoncé definitely proved the theory that she can do no wrong — especially with that bloody red on her pout. She and Lala Anthony sported similar colors, but Bey’s lips had a richer tone thanks to a mixture of MAC Lipsticks in Cyber and Hang Up.

Try This: Wet ‘n’ Wild MegaLast Lip Color in Cherry Bomb, $ 2.29

Deep Berry

Selena Gomez always flaunts the prettiest shades of berry on her lips and looks great doing it. A deep raspberry complements an elegant gown, especially when paired with voluminous lashes and neutral eyeshadow.

Try This: Revlon Super Lustrous Lipstick in Berry Couture, $ 7

Shailene Woodley And Lena Dunham Prove The Met Gala Can Be Fun, Too

The Met Gala serves as an opportunity to see some of the biggest names in the film, music and fashion industries dressed to the nines and completely decked in glam. Thanks to professional photogs, there were plenty of gorgeous shots to go around.

These days, however, social media gives us what we want even more — an inside look into what’s really going on both inside the event and at the after parties. Thankfully, a slew of those photos have surfaced too, and from the looks of at least one, the Met Gala is way more fun than you might think.

Lena Dunham and Shailene Woodley, two of Hollywood’s sweethearts and what we can only hope are budding best friends, took a break from the flashing lights to make some funny faces, which Rodarte then posted to their Instagram. (Woodley wore the designer to the event.)

It’s so refreshing to see these ladies cutting a little loose at such a high profile event. We just hope Ms. Wintour didn’t catch them goofing off. Something tells us that wouldn’t go over so well with her white-tie theme for the evening.
