Gay Tupac aka Juicy Smolliét aka Jussie Smollett Asks Chicago Police For Transparency In His Case In The Wake Of George Floyd

Source: Nuccio DiNuzzo / Getty
Remember Jussie Smollet? Yes, the actor is still around and is now attempting to leverage the current civil uprising for his legal issues.
As spotted on Page Six, the California native is still in a tug of war with the Chicago Police Department over his 2019 hate crime indictment. With the recent developments surrounding the brutal murder of George Floyd and the countless other people of color who had their lost their lives at the hands of the law, Jussie is asking some pointed very questions regarding his case. According to the court documents sourced by Fox News Smollet wants to know why one of the force’s top leaders was terminated.
On Friday, June 5 his legal team filed a motion stating “as we see millions across the country rise up to protest and expose police misconduct, the city [of Chicago], by its refusal to produce the requested documents, is choosing to actively resist a citizen’s lawful efforts to reveal dishonesty, directly relating to the charges against him”. The paperwork also noted that the fired badge “oversaw and publicly commented on the investigation”.
The Gay Tupac still faces six charges stemming from him allegedly staging a hate crime in January of 2019.

George Floyd Laid To Rest: Here Are The Most Powerful Moments From His Funeral

Source: The Washington Post / Getty
After hosting memorials in Minnesota and North Carolina, the family and friends gathered of George Floyd gathered for one more final time in Houston, Texas, earlier this week for the funeral laying Floyd’s remains to rest.
Following a public viewing on Monday with over 6,000 mourners paying their respects, George Floyd was finally laid to rest at the Fountain of Praise church in his home town of Houston on Tuesday (Jun 9). The nearly three-hour event was filled with moments of encouragement, consolation, and shared memories as speakers came to share their condolences with the Floyd family as hundreds of mourners filled the pews for early afternoon service. Family, friends, and prominent guests, including Jamie Foxx, Channing Tatum, and Al. B. Sure gathered to celebrate the life of the 46-year-old and called for a total reform of the police practices that led to an officer pressing his knee into Floyd’s neck for eight minutes, killing him.
Opening the service, Kim Burrell took the stage to sing “God Will Take Care of You” before Ne-Yo sang an acapella version of Boyz II Men’s “So Hard to Say Goodbye.”
“This man changed the world, he changed the world for the better,” Ne-Yo said before singing. “I just want to personally thank George Floyd for his sacrifice so that my kids could be alright later on.”
As previously reported, Reverend Al Sharpton delivered a powerful eulogy, addressing Trump’s crass response to the protests that have enveloped the nation.
“You take rubber bullets and tear gas to clear out peaceful protesters, and then take a Bible and walk in front of a church, and use a church as a prop,” Rev. Sharpton said. “I have seen grandchildren of slave masters tear down slave master statues.”
According to the Intelligencer, Floyd’s younger brother Rodney delivered a passionate speech about his brother noting that his desire was always to “change the world” before admitting that he is still processing the loss.
“Third Ward, Cuney Homes, that’s where he was born at. But everybody is going to remember him around the world. He is going to change the world. If he was told he would have to sacrifice his life to bring the world together and knowing him, I know he would’ve done it,” Rodney Floyd said. “It seems unreal because, you know, every day is like waiting on that phone call. I’m still calling his phone number.”
While the public outpour of support brought comfort to family and supporters, it was two notable moments of significant change that took place making the moment historic.
At the service, Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner declared that he will sign an executive order banning chokeholds in the nation’s third-largest city, before proclaiming June 9 as George Perry Floyd, Jr. Day in Harris County.
“In this city, we will require de-escalation,” Mayor Turner said. “In this city, you have to give a warning before you shoot. In this city, you have a duty to intervene. In this city, we will require comprehensive reporting. In this city, you must exhaust all alternatives before shootings, and there will be other things in this executive order.”
The second came when Presidential hopeful Joe Biden delivered his speech calling for “racial justice” before stopping short of agreeing to defund the police, CNN reported, noting to George Floyd’s daughter, Gianna, that her father changed the world.
“Ladies and gentlemen — we cannot turn away,” Biden said. “We cannot leave this moment thinking we can once again turn away from the racism that stings at our very soul and from systemic abuse that still plagues American life. Now is the time for racial justice. That’s the answer we must give to our children when they ask why. Because when there’s justice for George Floyd, we will truly be on our way to racial justice in America. And then, as you said Gianna, your daddy will have changed the world.”

Kevin Durant Talks George Floyd, Black Lives Mattering & Much More

Source: Jim McIsaac / Getty
Kevin Durant has proven his elite status as a basketball player but over time has shown there is far more to him than just being a stellar athlete. In a new interview, the Prince George’s County, Md. native talks about George Floyd, Black lives and why they matter, plus much more.
In a new piece that appeared in The Undefeated, ESPN’s Marc J. Spears digs in and doesn’t shy away from the killing of Floyd and what role does that play in his ongoing efforts with community development and outreach.
From The Undefeated:
How did you react to seeing the video of George Floyd dying from police brutality?
It made me think about all the previous videos we’ve seen involving police brutality. At that point, you get tired of seeing it or wondering if things are going to change or whether we will see this again in the future. Will people’s hearts change? There are just so many questions going through my mind when you see a black man getting slaughtered on TV and on camera like that.
It’s damaging to see another life being taken away from us. Someone with a family. Someone who was a father. A son. A friend. It was just horrible to see, especially coming from people who are supposed to be protecting us. We’re really supposed to feel like we are safe all around. It’s a weird time we are in now.
What do you think about the response from around the world after Floyd’s death?
The world has had enough. It’s been good to see so many different people’s voices being heard around this time. So many different ethnicities coming together to bring awareness to what we’ve been talking about for a while now. Our generation, the younger got involved. Our parents and their parents were fighting for the same thing. To finally see the world come together and all of these big corporations who never spent time to talk about it, you can tell that when we move as one we’re pretty powerful.
It is a fascinating interview that isn’t solely based on race but also Durant’s foundation work, the recent Showtime documentary that highlighted Prince George’s County’s basketball legacy, and when he’ll return to the court to suit up for the Nets.

3 More Minneapolis Cops Charged In George Floyd Death, Derek Chauvin Charges Upped

Source: JIM WATSON / Getty
Derek Chauvin was arrested charged with the murder of George Floyd last week, but protests continue as the other 3 officers involved remained free. Today (June 3), the aforementioned cops who stood by while Floyd was killed have been charged with aiding and abetting murder.
Chauvin’s charged have actually been elected from third-degree murder and manslaughter to now second-degree murder. It was Chauvin who kept his knee on Floyd’s neck for over 8 minutes as the doomed Black man pleaded for his life, telling the now ex-cop he couldn’t breathe.
According to NBC News, criminal complaints were filed by the state of Minnesota on ex-officers Tou Thao, Thomas Lane and J. Alexander Kueng on Wednesday. The murder charge against another former officer, Derek Chauvin, was also elevated to second-degree murder.
Floyd’s family ordered and paid for an independent autopsy that revealed he died of Asphyxia. The original coroner’s report tried to pin his death on underlying conditions. While the medical examiner did determine his death to be a homicide, the report noted Floyd had “hypertensive heart disease, fentanyl intoxication and recent methamphetamine use” per NBC. As if a grown man squeezing your air passageway was just a peripheral factor.
All four of the ex-officers were fired on May 26, a day after the video of Floyd’s heinous detainment which led to his death went viral.
Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison is the lead prosecutor in the case against the former officers.
The officers originally arrived and detained George Floyd on suspicion that he used a fake $ 20 bill.
Nationwide, protests and unrest have followed as people have taken to the streets to demand justice for Floyd and the countless other Black people murdered at the hands of police.

Spike Lee Releases Powerful Video Juxtaposing ‘Do The Right Thing’ With Murders Of George Floyd & Eric Garner

Source: Timothy Hiatt / Getty
When it comes to speaking out about social injustice, Spike Lee is known for not holding his tongue.
On Monday (June 1), during an interview with CNN over the current unrest taking place in cities across the country, Spike Lee premiered a short video featuring clips from the intense and crucial scene in his iconic film, Do The Right Thing, Juxtaposed with the real videos of the murders of both Eric Garner and George Floyd at the hands of police.
“What we’re seeing today is not new,” Lee said. “We’ve seen this again and again and again, and people are asking the same questions, like: ‘Why are people rioting? Why are people doing this?’ Because people are fed up and people are tired of the debasing, the killing of black bodies. That’s what this country is built upon.”
Titled “3 Brothers,” the short begins with a title card reading “Will History Stop Repeating Itself?”, and then cuts between clips of Floyd and Garner’s encounters with police, and Radio Raheem’s death by strangulation from the film.
Spike Lee also took time to address viewers who were denouncing the protests or calling them violent by pointing out that Black people have had a history of being dealt with violently in the country,
“The attack on black bodies has been here from the get-go,” says filmmaker Spike Lee, responding to protests over George Floyd’s death. “I am not condoning all this other stuff but I understand why people are doing what they are doing.”
“3 Brothers” marks the second short film that Spike Lee has released since March. His previous short, “NEW YORK NEW YORK,” was a love letter to the city of New York and its people during the coronavirus crisis.
In addition to his film shorts, Lee also on the eve of the release for his highly anticipated film Da 5 Bloods, which is about four African-American vets who return to Vietnam to find buried treasure and the remains of their fallen leader, is scheduled to be released via Netflix on June 12th.

Music Industry Calls for ‘Blackout Tuesday’ After George Floyd’s Death
The music industry is standing in solidarity after the death of George Floyd, who was fatally restrained by Minneapolis police, with a “Blackout Tuesday” initiative.
Atlantic Records’ senior director of marketing, Jamila Thomas and Platoon’s senior artist campaign manager, Brianna Agyemang, are behind the blackout, which is also circulating on social media as #TheShowMustBePaused. The blackout calls for the music industry to stop operations on Tuesday, June 2, to bring awareness to the police brutality and racial injustice in the U.S.
“The music industry is a multibillion dollar industry. An industry that has profited predominantly from black art,” reads a statement on the initiative’s web site. “Our mission is to hold the industry at large, including major corporations and their partners who benefit from the efforts, struggles and successes of black people accountable. To that end, it is the obligation of these entities to protect and empower the black community that have made them disproportionately wealthy in ways that are measurable and transparent.”
“Blackout Tuesday” has received support from major record labels, including Interscope Records, Def Jam Recordings, Warner Records, Sony Music Entertainment, Capitol Records and Columbia Records, among others.

Looting of Retail Takes Over L.A.’s George Floyd Protests
Fears among retailers and brands that protests in Los Angeles over the death of George Floyd would devolve into looting have been realized in many areas.
On Saturday evening, around 6 p.m., an Alexander McQueen store on Rodeo Drive in Beverly Hills was broken into and looted, according to live video aired by a local CBS station. Dozens of mainly young men streamed into the McQueen store after the glass of its doorway was broken. A large display window was tagged with “Make America Pay.” The store had not been boarded up like most of its neighbors had earlier in the day. Some that entered the store ran out with handfuls of merchandise and handbags.
Not long before, the Gucci store on rodeo was tagged with “Eat the rich” and managed to breach its blue plywood barricade and starting to break the glass facade behind, but left when police started to run over. Dozens of police, many in riot gear, were present in and around the Rodeo area since early afternoon as protests in L.A. began to grow and move west from the Fairfax/Grove area of L.A.. The police did not attempt to stop the looting of the McQueen store.

Now as Minneapolis burns with protests following the tragic murder of George Floyd celebrities such as Lebron James, Beyonce, Barack Obama, John Boyega and others have become very vocal speaking against the aggressive police brutality on black people that led to the Black man’s death.
Ice Cube, who built his career on saying “F*ck the Police” canceled his Good Morning America appearance on Thursday. He cited the recent f*ckery in America as the reason for his cancellation tweeting: “I apologize to everyone expecting to see me on Good Morning America today, but after the events in Minnesota with George Floyd I’m in no mood to tell America, ‘good morning.’”
The tweet garnered almost 900k likes and 135k retweets of support but, of course, there were quite a few critics of the tweet:
