ComplexCon 2018: Gucci Ghost Artist Trevor Andrew Debuts Line

PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST: Trevor Andrew, known for his Gucci Ghost collaboration with Gucci, can now add streetwear line Real Buy to his resume.
Andrew was on hand at ComplexCon this past weekend to debut the Real Buy, which was initially teased online on Nov. 1 with a long-sleeve T-shirt. For ComplexCon, the artist brought hand-painted jackets, which lined the walls of his space. There were also short- and long-sleeve T-shirts retailing for $ 65 and $ 90, respectively, bearing seven different designs.
“I’ve always been making stuff so it’s nice when I find somebody that believes in what I’m doing and they give the free reins to do what I do. That’s always a good scenario,” Andrew said of the Real Buy while sitting on a couch in the brand’s booth Saturday.
Andrew’s ComplexCon buildout re-created his Koreatown studio, which he moved into last year after working out of Brooklyn for 17 years. The booth came complete with painted floors mirroring his actual work space and free tattoos done on site.
Andrew’s art has been seen in places such as Dover Street Market in Tokyo and Milk Gallery in New York. The artist, who is a former pro snowboarder, has also worked with the aforementioned

A Myron Vale Investigation

Scott William Carter

Genre: Paranormal

Publish Date: May 8, 2015

Publisher: Flying Raven Press

Seller: Scott William Carter

Everybody dies. Nobody leaves . . . Award-winning author Scott William Carter returns with a spellbinding tale of a private investigator who bridges both sides of the great divide. After narrowly surviving a near-fatal shooting, Portland detective Myron Vale wakes with a bullet still lodged in his brain, a headache to end all headaches, and a terrible side effect that radically transforms his world for the worse: He sees ghosts. Lots of them. By some estimates, a hundred billion people have lived and died before anyone alive today was even born. For Myron, they're all still here. That's not even his biggest problem. No matter how hard he tries, he can't tell the living from the dead. Despite this, Myron manages to piece together something of a life as a private investigator specializing in helping people on both sides of the great divide–until a stunning blonde beauty walks into his office needing help finding her husband. Myron wants no part of the case until he sees the man's picture … and instantly his carefully reconstructed life begins to unravel. "Carter's writing is on target." – Publishers Weekly "A sultry blonde walks into a detective's office. Big deal, seen it a million times, right? Wrong! THE GHOST DETECTIVE ranks as one of the most ingenious departures from the norm I've seen in a long time … I've always enjoyed Scott William Carter's work, but THE GHOST DETECTIVE takes my admiration to a whole new level. I loved this book. "  – David H. Hendrickson, author of  Cracking the Ice "The Sixth Sense meets Spenser For Hire in Scott William Carter's magnificent Ghost Detective."  - Michael J. Totten, author of Resurrection "Scott is one of those rare writers who can and does cross genres, and do it well. You never know what kind of story you'll get from him, but you do know that it'll be good."  - Kristine Kathryn Rusch, Hugo award-winning author of The Disappeared "Fans of police procedurals with a paranormal twist will enjoy this book. The style and tone of the book reminded me a bit of the original Night Stalker series, but not as graphic or violent." – Jana DeLeon, New York Times Bestselling author of  Trouble in Mudbug From the author of The Gray and Guilty Sea and Wooden Bones, comes this riveting novel of a man cursed with a terrible gift. In a world where everybody dies but nobody leaves, Myron Vale is the rare individual who completely straddles both sides of the great divide. His strange ability resulting from a gunshot to the head while serving as a Portland police officer, a few years later he recovers to forge a new life as private investigator catering to both the living and the dead. With its memorable characters, taut prose, and spellbinding story, Scott William Carter's Ghost Detective will haunt you long after you finish the final pages — a promising launch to what will hopefully be a long-running series. –FRP Never miss a new Myron Vale book : Sign up for the new release mailing list by going to this link (copy/paste into browser):  swcarter.com/news    The Myron Vale Investigations (in chronological order): The Haunted Breadbox (short story prequel) Ghost Detective The Ghost Who Said Goodbye

Experience three spine-tingling tales of terror to haunt your dreams. A debunker of all things paranormal, Professor Phillip Goodman (Andy Nyman) has devoted his life to exposing phony psychics and fraudulent supernatural shenanigans on his own television show. His skepticism is put to the test, however, when he receives a file of three chilling, inexplicable cases: a night watchman (Paul Whitehouse) haunted by disturbing visions as he patrols an abandoned asylum; an edgy young man (Alex Lawther) involved in a hellish car accident deep in the woods; and a wealthy former banker (Sherlock's Martin Freeman) visited by the poltergeist spirit of his unborn child. Even scarier: each of the these macabre stories seems to have a sinister connection to Professor Goodman's own life. Will they make a believer of him yet?

While Dr. Frankenstein thinks the transplant should be of a healthy and sane brain, Ygor plots with Frankenstein’s unscrupulous colleague Dr. Bohmer (Lionel Atwill) to transplant Ygor’s brain instead so that he can rule the world using the monster’s body. Sometimes the greatest horrors lurk in the most mundane places This collection features some of M. R. James’s greatest tales of the supernatural world crossing over into our own. In “Number 13,” an inn that previously belonged to an alchemist changes dimensions in the night. “The Mezzotint” features a painting of a house reenacting a gruesome scene from the house’s history. In “The Treasure of Abbot Thomas,” an antiquary who has discovered the location of a treasure gets far more than he bargained for. James’s tales of the terror that hides beneath the prosaic continue to stun more than a century after they were written. This ebook has been professionally proofread to ensure accuracy and readability on all devices. M. R. James (1862–1936) is considered the father of the British ghost story. Before gaining fame as a fiction writer, James had a career as a respected scholar of the medieval period. With the release of his Ghost Stories of an Antiquary , James built a reputation in horror literature that has gone on to inspire greats such as H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, and Stephen King. James “Ghost” St. Patrick has always viewed himself as more than just a drug dealer. He aspires to succeed as a true businessman, as a life of illegal activity usually concludes with incarceration or death.

Season 2 of Power has thematically highlighted the Ghost “happily ever after” fantasy. In this narcotic funded Utopia, he rides into the sunset with his high school sweetheart, overseeing his (now legit) businesses without a care in the world. Unfortunately for him, reality was far more sinister. The ominous title of this episode, “Ghost is Dead” represents the endgame for James St. Patrick. Ghost must die in order for James St. Patrick to live. His exit strategy needs flawless execution in order to succeed. The season finale of Power brought us the culmination of Ghost’s plan, and the repercussions of his actions will provide the foundation for a hectic season 3.

How can Ghost get out of the game alive? Here were the key components of his plan

The Drug Operation Needs To End

Joe Proctor, always angling for more business, let’s Ghost know that he should keep him on retainer if he plans to continue his business. Proctor tells Ghost that with Lobos in custody and the witch hunt for witnesses, his best bet was to eliminate all ties to “Ghost” and leave the city. Ghost is resistant to this plan, and wants to handle things his way.

The mutiny against Ghost and Tommy turned the entire crew against them. It was time to “burn down The Carter” and clean house. Early on, it seemed that the Jimenez brothers were doing the dirty work for Ghost. Drifty got bodied within the first 3 minutes of the episode, and Vladimir (The Serb) met a similar fate. The hitman left a calling card, the “La Araña” (the Spider) card at every hit. Whomever is killing off the cartel is also texting other people from the deceased member’s cell phones. The USDA’s led by Mike Sandoval, inform Lobos that his NYC operation were dropping like flies, and he might be next unless he gets protection. Lobos holds firm on not snitching (including a hilarious roast session comparing Sandoval to a Telenovela actor) and denies any deal. The misfortune eventually found Lobos, as he was stabbed in cell by an inmate receiving a cell phone and instructions from the outside, dealing the same La Araña card.

Ghost still has respect for Ruiz, even through the double crosses. He goes to Ruiz to inform him of the hits on the cartel and how they have to leave town to protect themselves and their families while this all blows over. Ghost even suggests that Lobos may be behind the murders. Ruiz agrees and proceeds to pack up and leave NYC expeditiously. This leaves Tommy, Ghost and Kanan as the last remaining prominent members of the operation.

Reclaim Truth and Solidify His Legitimate Business Ventures

Simon Stern has proprietarily schooled Ghost this season. He forced him into a partnership by becoming his landlord, and continues to keep Ghost hooked by offering an unattainable 20% over profit goal in order for him to buy Truth back. The robbery at Truth where the books and money were stolen was met with minimal anger for Stern. Since he “couldn’t prove” that Ghost met the mark because the money was stolen and Kantos failed to enter the figures into the system, Stern considered his success a non factor. Little did Simon know that Ghost had a final trump card in his hand. During Stern’s divorce proceedings with his wife Madeline, she revealed her knowledge of his off shore embezzlement and his two sets of accounting records for Truth. Instead of alerting the authorities, Madeline worked out a deal to get ownership of Truth, along with two other clubs (probably including the Miami club too) and she subsequently signed the rights over to Ghost! Simon won many battles, but it finally looks like Ghost won the war, and his club back. Kantos better update his Linkedin profile!

When a family contacts her to deal with a disturbing presence in the old mansion they’ve recently purchased, Ellie first believes it to be a typical, by-the-book specter, a residual haunting by a restless spirit. Instead, she finds herself confronting an evil older and more powerful than she’d ever expected, rooted in the house’s long and sordid history of luxury, sin, and murder. The dangerous entity seems particularly interested in her clients’ ten-year-old daughter. Cabaret: Betty Buckley Shines A (Ghost) Light At Joe’s Pub

BETTY BUCKLEY *** out of ****
JOE’S PUB AT THE PUBLIC THEATER

Fans won’t want to miss Tony winner Betty Buckley’s all-too-brief stint at Joe’s Pub through May 31. I’m still disappointed I missed her last fall here. First, Joe’s Pub is one of New York City’s best intimate spaces for live performance. Second, she was promoting her new album Ghostlight, which was co-produced by longtime friend T Bone Burnett and may well be the album of her career. It was certainly one of the ten best CDs of 2014. I hoped and assumed Buckley would still be promoting that work.

But ever restless as Buckley is, she’s created an entirely new show dubbed “Dark Blue-Eyed Blues.” It finds Buckley in a playful mood. She dished up some amusing anecdotes, ranging from singing one of her favorite songs in the shower (“Come To Me, Bend To Me,” a highlight of that album and this show), feeling jealous of the spotlight at a grade school talent show and falling in love with a hot but dumber-than-soap man and needing couples therapy to admit to herself she’d have to move on from this appealing but inert hunk.

This light mood was captured in quick, upbeat renditions of “Them There Eyes,” “Do Nothin’ Till You Hear From Me” and “Blues In The Night” (not to mention the defiant “I’m Still Here” which Buckley sang recently in an all-star concert production of Follies at the Royal Albert Hall in London).

But for me, this isn’t where Buckley lives. Like Peggy Lee and Shirley Horn, Buckley is a master at quiet, intimate, revelatory renditions of songs you thought you knew but which sound utterly fresh and new when she sings them.

“This Nearly Was Mine’ (from South Pacific, of course and a rare selection that appeared on Ghostlight) was an early highlight of the 80 minute set, a moving but dry-eyed spin on a number currently showcased on Broadway in that musical’s revival.

(Dry-eyed, by the way, is not the most typical phrase to use when discussing Buckley since she digs deep into the emotions of tunes — not to mention offering a tribute to her friend Stephen Bruton who has gone too soon –and the tears often flow.)

Another masterful moment was the lullaby “All The Pretty Horses,” a song which would have fit perfectly on Ghostlight but doesn’t appear on that album. The arrangements of musical director Christian Jacob here and throughout the show leaned on dissonance to create a shimmering backdrop that is deceptive and one imagines quite tricky for a singer to navigate, though Buckley makes it seem easy. Between threading the needle on the arrangement and using her microphone with consummate skill, Buckley made this promise of a treat for a baby feel like a blessing of prosperity for one and all. They delivered similar magic on an exceptional Rodgers & Hart medley that contained “Where’s That Rainbow,” “Spring Is Here” and “Falling In Love With Love.”

Here’s Buckley singing “Bewitched.” It’s on her new album Ghostlight though Buckley didn’t sing it in this concert.

With her mother and godmother in the audience, Buckley was on her best behavior like any daughter would be. She also kept a stand with lyrics facing her wherever she wandered on the stage and those paying attention could enjoy a master class of seeing her quietly move it this way and that without ever calling attention to the fact. Whether Buckley always keeps lyrics handy to free her of anxiety or just at the beginning of a new show, I can’t say. I can say that her casual glances at the sheets now and then didn’t detract from her performance.

It’s been almost 18 years since she opened a show on Broadway, which is absurd, as Buckley proved by her terrific rendition of Sting’s “Practical Arrangement,” a cooly observant tune about a lack of love not being an impediment to marriage that was written for his musical The Last Ship but not used in the show. One wonders how a mother feels hearing the child she once held in her arms deliver the insight of Joni Mitchell’s “Both Sides Now” as an encore, though of course it’s always a shock to remember this wise song was written when Mitchell was just 23 years old.

So it’s a solid if not yet transcendent show, with her band in fine form and Buckley in excellent voice. If you can’t catch it, do yourself a favor and get Ghostlight right away.

2015-05-29-1432874479-3011530-Ghostlight.jpg

And to heck with variety, Buckley, give us a dark night of the soul show, an In The Wee Small Hours style evening of intimacy and regret. Leave the upbeat numbers to the kids who don’t know better. On the penultimate performance of the concert proper, Buckley delivered Leonard Cohen’s “Bird On The Wire” with grace, opening her arms wide as she sang “I have tried in my way to be free,” as if to say, “This is who I am.” Revered? Definitely. Underutilized on stage and screen because she doesn’t play the game the way they expect? Unquestionably. Free? Artistically for sure, and that’s surely the only way that matters.

8 Things We Learned from Diane von Furstenberg’s Talk with the Ghost of Coco Chanel

Diane von Furstenberg Coco Chanel

There were three chairs on the dais at “Live from the NYPL” last night in midtown Manhattan: one occupied by Chanel biographer and moderator Rhonda Garelick; one by the inimitable Diane von Furstenberg, in a pink-and-black print dress of her own design; and one was left empty, for the ghost of Coco Chanel. The three were gathered—in a sense—to compare and contrast the lives of two queens of fashion (who had been notably been linked in a 1976 Newsweek cover story about the Princess von Furstenberg—then selling scads of clingy, versatile wrap dresses—who was described as being “the most marketable woman since Coco Chanel”).

But did the two have more in common than success? And would Coco have liked DVF? “Probably not, maybe yes,” conjectured von Furstenberg. “When I was young she may have.” Garelick’s take: “I think she’d be a little jealous of you, Diane. [Chanel] was very competitive with women and had very few women friends.” Here, eight things we learned about Coco Chanel from Diane von Furstenberg.

On How Chanel Became Chanel
“[Chanel] would never have become who she was if she didn’t go to the nunnery. Her life in the convent was the most formative and that’s where she learned aesthetics, that’s where she learned discipline, that’s where she learned how to sew. I think what really formed her was that.”

On DVF and Coco’s Common Ground
“I’ve often been associated with her. But when I read your book, I couldn’t believe how many similarities there were. First of all, where I identify with her is the very source; how humiliated she was as a young girl and so how much she wanted vengeance, and I really understood all that part so, so well.”

. . . And on Their Not-So-Common Ground
“Now there are things that are not similar: Apparently she was working for the Gestapo and all of that, but somehow reading your book, I really thought that she may have gotten involved with the Gestapo trying to save her nephew, who I believe was her son and so you then sympathize very much with that.”

On the Perfect Fabric
“She made clothes that women wanted to wear, she made clothes that were comfortable, she brought in jersey. You cannot find a male designer who likes jersey fabric. And I understand why. I mean it’s much more beautiful to see a satin duchesse or see some beautiful silk. But women designers really get jersey . . . always, whether it’s Chanel, Madame Vionnet, Madame Grès, Sonia Rykiel, Norma Kamali, Donna Karan. . . . All women designers understand jersey because it’s practical and it feels good.”

. . . And the Ideal Skirt Length
“[Chanel] always said ‘the perfect length is flirtier avec du genou,’ which is ‘flirt with the knee,’ and I always quote her for that.”

On Female Comradeship
“She was jealous of certain women, but she liked women. Well, first of all, she liked women sexually, so that’s liking women.”

On Self-Creation
“The one thing we certainly have in common is that we were our own ancestors. That we invented ourselves. . . . Chanel was the essence of a woman. I always said when I was a young woman, I want a man’s life in a woman’s body. And both of us did that.”

On Why Chanel (the Brand) Is What It Is Now
“She was in a world that wasn’t hers, and then she decided, I’m going to dress them—and so I really relate to that, to that early part, but I’m also so extraordinarily proud and excited for Chanel that a hundred years later the brand is still so relevant and so modern and so edgy and all of that and I like that. It was because there was a real spirit. And because at the end the truth is we make and sell a dream. But it’s not a dream that’s empty. She became the woman she wanted to be.”
