How Cardi B Came to Wear Vintage Mugler at the Grammys

Cardi B on the half shell was the 2019 Grammys’ most unforgettable red-carpet fashion moment, and the star’s stylist Kollin Carter tells WWD the plan for the pop star to wear the vintage 1995-96 Thierry Mugler couture look was months in the making.
The relationship dates back to September, when Carter direct-messaged the Mugler brand on Instagram. “Just the name Thierry Mugler…it was always a dream of mine to get a hold of archive pieces from him. He was one of my favorite designers ever since I fell in love with fashion,” the stylist explained.
One thing led to another and soon, the house’s new creative director Casey Cadwallader was inviting Cardi and her stylist to attend his debut runway show in October during Paris ready-to-wear, and visit the brand archives. “There was one piece I was fighting for and harassing them about constantly, and it was the red-carpet dress,” Carter said of the pink duchess satin and black velvet “Venus” sheath dress and embellished bodysuit. “From the moment I saw it, I knew it was going to be a debatable moment, some people would love it and some people would hate it and that’s everything we’re about when it comes to

Grammys 2019 Fashion Review: Cardi B on the Half Shell, Michelle Obama on Stage

Typically, it’s awards season’s loudest red carpet. But Sunday night’s Grammys fashion was unusually quiet — and covered up.
Without Beyonce, Rihanna, Taylor Swift or Ariana Grande, who ditched the awards show after creative differences with producers (but wore her Zac Posen gown on Instagram anyway), the diva quotient was down, with only Cardi B’s meme-generating vintage 1995 Thierry Mugler Venus on the half shell look, and Janelle Monae’s sharp-shouldered Jean Paul Gaultier couture minidress to get armchair critics going.
Even Lady Gaga, who famously arrived at the 2011 Grammys in an Armani egg pod, played it relatively safe (she’s a movie star now, after all), wearing a silver, side-ruffle gown by Hedi Slimane for Celine (a no-brainer given that she attended his first women’s ready-to-wear show in October).
Long gone were the nearly nude looks of years past; instead of baring her naval in daring green Versace circa 2000, Jennifer Lopez went with a modest, crystal-embellished mint green Ralph and Russo column gown, and covered her face with a wide-brim hat; Miley Cyrus worked an oversized circa 2019 Mugler suit with a side of cleavage, and H.E.R. was outfitted in a custom Coach purple jacquard jumpsuit.
Aside from Joy Villa and Ricky Rebel’s

Q-Tip Says F*ck The Grammys Over Snub, A Tribe Called Quest Exploited

This morning (Nov. 28), the 2018 Grammy nominees were announced and Black Twitter was all happy since so many Hip-Hop acts, like Jay-Z, Kendrick Lamar and Childish Gambino, got blessed with numerous nominations. However, one artist with his eye on the jig is Q-Tip.

The Abstract is peeved consider that A Tribe Called Quest performed at the 2017 Grammy ceremony, yet the group’s latest, critically acclaimed We Got It from Here… Thank You 4 Your Service album was nowhere to be found on the list of nominees.

Tip took to Instagram to drag the Grammys for what he considers the exploitation of his group.

“[I’m] sick of y’all f*cking Grammy n*ggas man. You get us to get out there and f*cking perform last year and close the sh*t and y’all don’t get us no fucking nominations?” says Tip. “9th, what happened?”

Tip is referring to 9th Wonder, but he meant no disrespect (Rapsody’s Laila’s Wisdom album caught a nomination, though).

He added, “We don’t get sh*t?! For that album. For that album!”

And that’s just part one.

Tip went on to stress the importance of ATCQ’s album while pleading that y’all not fall for the “diverse” Grammy’s jig since being Black is what his group stood on. #facts

Let’s end this with a quote from the late, great Phife Dawg. “I’ll never let a statue tell me how nice I am,” spit the 5 Foot Assassin on “Award Tour.” A Tribe Called Quest are one of the nicest to ever do it, period. They deserve ALL the awards.

Just saying.

With Six Nominations, Sam Smith Is Set to Sweep the Grammys

Photo: Shirlaine Forrest/WireImage/Getty Images

It’s a few days before the Grammys, and Sam Smith, nominated for six awards, is getting married. Well, he’s pretending to, at least. In a new music video for the song “Lay Me Down,” released this morning, the singer is standing at the end of a candlelit church aisle, exchanging vows with a husband-to-be. We learn by the end of the video that this is a fantasy within a fantasy—the camera pans right, the husband disappears, and Smith is sitting in one of the pews all alone. The wedding was nothing but a daydream, it turns out, but can you blame him? Happy stories are supposed to end in weddings, we’re told, and if anyone has grounds for imagining a happy ending at the moment, it’s Sam Smith.

This time last year, Smith was largely unknown. Though his voice was featured on two popular dance songs, Disclosure’s “Latch” and Naughty Boy’s “La La La,” the powerful vocals on those tracks were faceless. There was something beguiling about not knowing who was behind those incredible bellows and shrieks—who could possess such an instrument and not already be famous? Was a forgotten soul singer from the seventies dragged into the studio? Did a woman sing those high, high notes? A choirboy who hadn’t yet hit puberty? Was computer software blending Luther Vandross’s buttery range with Whitney Houston’s piercing strength? Even the name, “Sam Smith,” sounded too generic to be a real person.

Turns out, he was just a kid. Raised in rural England, Smith was placed in singing classes at the age of eight. He spent his adolescence trying to break into the music industry, getting bumped between record deals. At eighteen, he moved to London, started writing songs with a friend named Jimmy Napes (“Lay Me Down” was the first song they wrote together), and became involved with the Disclosure boys, two brothers who were producing music that revived a classic house sound first prevalent in the eighties and nineties. That’s how “Latch” came to be. Though his voice is the star of the dance-music phenomenon, Smith was not featured in the video, and it was Disclosure who soaked up most of the glory.

In retrospect, it’s probably best that Smith’s big unveil did not happen with the bombastic sounds of “Latch.” In his own solo career, he would take a drastically different tack, attempting something that few artists have in recent years: In a sea of hip-hop, peppy pop, and speedy EDM-lite, he brought the ballad back to mainstream radio. His style is, quite simply, anti-dance music. As he prepared to release In the Lonely Hour, his solo debut album filled with songs about romantic despair, Smith hit SXSW and began performing “Latch” as a pared-down slow song, not a hand-raising banger, a point of difference that seemed anachronistic at the time but that allowed him to carve out a separate lane from every other BPM-chasing artist. Critics started calling him the male Adele, but Adele has more umph in her hit songs. Sam Smith is, quite simply, the softest, saddest man in pop.

Something else remarkable happened with the debut of In the Lonely Hour, which arrived in the U.S. in June. In the lead-up to the release, Smith came out of the closet as gay, admitting to Fader that much of the album was inspired by an unrequited relationship with another man. “It feels good to have interviews like this, to chat about it and put stuff to bed,” he says. “I want to make it a normality because this is a nonissue. People wouldn’t ask a straight person these questions. I’ve tried to be clever with this album, because it’s also important to me that my music reaches everybody. I’ve made my music so that it could be about anything and everybody—whether it’s a guy, a female, or a goat—and everybody can relate to that.” Of course, his openness was not, in fact, a “nonissue”; it was a powerful moment for gay rights. Following the lead of Frank Ocean, who came out before his debut studio album, Channel Orange, Smith further opened the door for young artists to be honest about their sexuality on the eve of success—to begin their careers with the truth. Not insignificantly, Smith, who has sold out Madison Square Garden, might be the first gay superstar in the history of music to be out of the closet for the entirety of his career. In the Lonely Hour has since gone platinum, was the third-best-selling album of 2014, and landed him six Grammy nominations, including Album of the Year.

Smith is exactly the kind of star the Recording Academy likes to mint: a singer with talent, polish, poise, style, and a tearjerker of a story. He’s also one of the few viable male pop forces to break through in a genre crowded with female heavyweights—Justin Bieber flamed out, Chris Brown is enduringly popular but hard to admire, and Nick Jonas has yet to prove that his post-Disney comeback can be sustained. For Smith, an artist who took songs about heartbreak to the very top of the pop charts, a wedding might not be in the cards quite yet, but a happy ending at this year’s Grammys seems assured.
