A Man’s Guide to What A Woman Is Saying

I JUST NEED SOME SPACE.
…. without you in it.

DO I LOOK FAT IN THIS DRESS?
We haven’t had a fight in a while.

NO, PIZZA’S FINE.
…. you cheap slob!

I JUST DON’T WANT A BOYFRIEND NOW.
I just don’t want you as a boyfriend now.

I DON’T KNOW, WHAT DO YOU WANT TO DO?
I can’t believe you have nothing planned.

COME HERE.
My puppy does this, too.

I LIKE YOU, BUT…
I don’t like you.

YOU NEVER LISTEN.
You never listen.

I’LL BE READY IN A MINUTE.
I’m ready, but I’m going to make you wait because I know you will.

OH, NO, I’LL PAY FOR MYSELF.
I’m just being nice; there’s no way I’m going dutch.

Received from Crosswalk.

The gentleman’s guide to dressing timelessly

First, a confession: There’s no such thing as dressing “timelessly”. If you’ve paid any attention to, say, the way politicians dress vs. the way Tom Brady dresses, or the way Benedict Cumberbatch dresses (or maybe how Cary Grant once did), you’ll know that there’s no single way to dress, because fashion is constantly influencing the clothes that men wear.

A Gentleman’s Guide to Cruise

The major luxury brands’ big cruise shows are for clients, and it’s no secret that this is where brands make an enormous amount of their money. They’re selling more than the clothes, however; they’re selling the lifestyle the clothes represent. To do that, they have to create an experience. And while editors, journalists and influencers are by no means the clients (though most may aspire to be), we are integral to the brands in helping create this exclusive experience. I was fortunate enough to be invited to the cruise shows for Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton and Gucci, my first such outing in my new reality as a fashion freelancer and aspiring influencer.
So, for seven days, one of the most coveted vacation destinations in the world became my playground, as editors, clients and influencers were whisked to Paris and the South of France. Instead of movie stars walking the red carpet, models walked the runways as we were treated to a whirlwind of meals, festivities and, of course, the main events: the shows themselves. Here, one lucky insider’s guide to the major cruise circuit.
I board my business-class flight to Paris. It’s 10 p.m. so I should probably get some sleep. Instead,

The Reluctant-spectator’s Guide to the 2018 Met Gala

If you took a scroll through your Instagram feed Tuesday morning and noticed some of your friends were fawning over a lot of over-the-top getups, or behind-the-scenes video of Madonna performing “Like a Prayer,” that’s thanks to Monday night’s Met Gala. The annual event is arguably the most spectacular party of the year, but it’s also the kind of thing that can easily pass you by if you’re not interested in the worlds of fashion, philanthropy, or celebrity culture. Still, some of your more engaged friends will want to talk about it at drinks this week, or at the barbecue you’re headed to this weekend. And to prepare you for that eventuality, we’ve compiled pretty much everything you need to know about the event in the handy guide below.

The Over-50 Step-by-Step Guide To Online Dating Success

Last month, I wrote a piece on the differences between what men worried about when they were dating in their teens (“Will she laugh at my peach fuzz?”) compared to their concerns when dating Over 50 (“Will she laugh at my back hair?”). You can read the other 24 here.

When it comes to overall changes in the world of dating between then and now, the very best improvement has to be online dating. Truly, it’s an historic innovation that ranks up there with the cotton gin, penicillin, and those lights in the parking garages that show you which spaces are empty.

Online dating just makes everything so simple.

Instead of spotting someone of interest; figuring a way to get to know him or her; doing your best to make a good impression; then working up the courage to ask her out (man) or hoping he will (woman), you merely fill out an online form, add some pictures, click a button, and boom: it’s game on.

How that game will go is impossible to say. Maybe you’ll find the love of your life, as the major online dating companies all seem to promise. Maybe you’ll engage in a steady stream of short-term, non-committed, sexually-driven encounters as a few of my friends did. Or maybe, like me, you’ll just have a nice time and meet some interesting people (okay, fine, I know what you’re thinking — yes, of course I’m envious of those friends…).

If you’re single and considering a full profile site like Match or OkCupid, or if you’re in a less than ideal marriage and wondering about online dating (check out this article on that situation), here’s a step-by-step look at getting the process started:

Get a separate, nondescript email address. You can do this for free through gmail, hotmail, yahoo, or others. Privacy is certainly a factor, but it’s also easier to keep your dating correspondence separate from your regular personal and business email. You’ll get lots of emails from your dating site, and hopefully a flood from people eager to meet you.

Choose your dating site screen name. Dating site screen names span the entire gamut. People use first names or initials, a personality trait (Loves2Laugh), a favorite activity (GolfNut), their hometown (LABabe), their profession (ElMatador), or a combination (NYCDocRuns). It’s wide open, and gives you a chance to highlight something(s) about yourself to catch their eye. So be prepared before you go online, recognizing you’ll likely have to add random characters (zip code, birth year, underscores) to achieve uniqueness. If you use a full-sentence-in-a-screen-name like “Imaybthe14U2luv4evr,” chances are good U will B 4gotN.

Add pictures. Okay, here’s a fact: your primary picture will make or break your online dating experience. But wait, you say. I’m on a full profile site because I abhor the shallowness of swipe apps like Tinder. I’m so much more than my picture; I’ve got hopes and dreams and wit and style, all of which I need to express fully so potential dates will know the true me, inside and out.

Yeah, that’s great. But if they don’t like your picture, they’re not reading a word you wrote.

Which isn’t to say you’ve got to look like Brad or Angelina to succeed at online dating. Of course not. But this photo needs to show you at your best. A clear shot, a nice smile, and bright eyes will help you score points (an Over 50 photo tip: looking up at the camera can help prevent that mess below our jaws…). Avoid hats, sunglasses, and being too “artsy.” And this picture must be mostly your face — if you’re turned away, or you’re too small to really make out, you’re going to get passed on.

Then add at least four or five additional pictures. They should both prove your primary shot isn’t a fluke, and illustrate other aspects of your life. You might include photos with your kids, your dog, traveling, hiking or biking, perhaps a business portrait. At least one should show your body head to toe. And make sure they’re consistently good. You don’t want someone to click through your pictures and go, “Wow … very nice … excellent … oooh, that’s too bad. Pass.”

Your pictures must be fairly recent. Not yesterday, but not (original) Clinton Administration. It makes absolutely no sense to post old photos, then show up looking like the parent of the person your date expected. At that point, there is zero chance you’ll win him or her over with your sparkling personality. And if you do have to use a great shot from the 00’s, cop to it and put the date in the picture’s caption.

Remember: a photograph transmits a tremendous amount of information. Be aware of that fact when choosing yours, and when browsing other’s.

Write your profile. For the “essay portion,” keep these basic concepts in mind:

First, be brief. Shakespeare didn’t know from online dating, but his “… brevity is the soul of wit” is spot on. Nobody is going to wade through through a fifty line block of solid text about what it will take to be your soulmate. Thanks to the internet, most people just skim, looking for nuggets of interest. Make it easy for your reader.

Secondly, stay positive, but show some humility. Nobody’s life is perfect, and portraying yours that way won’t make you look good. You’re over fifty and single — something didn’t work out at some point along the way. And that’s okay, since it’s the same for the people reading your words. By all means emphasize the good things in your life, but noting you’ve had a down or two among the ups only makes you more genuine, relatable, and approachable.

And finally, rather than presenting a dry list of your specific skills or traits, tell your potential dates what’s in it for them. For instance, instead of saying you’re a great cook, mention how much you enjoy preparing a gourmet meal for two. Rather than bragging about the extensive travel you’ve done, note how wonderful it would be to show a very special someone the timeless beauty of Florence. In other words, don’t sell the feature, sell the benefit.

Answer the questions. In the “multiple choice” section you’ll select the best answers about yourself, and what you’re looking for in a potential date.

First biggie is age, and again the suggestion is to be honest. Some people list themselves as younger for “search purposes,” then tell the truth in their profile; that’s not as bad as using ancient pictures, but again gets you off to a poor start. Similarly, be honest, or at least honest-ish, for questions about your height, body-type, exercise frequency, etc.

As for questions about what you’re seeking in a date, go as broad as possible. List yourself as open to a wide age-range, at least a few years beyond your own. For topics like religion, ethnicity, hair color, etc., select “no preference” as often as you possibly can. Showing how open you are makes you look better to people inspecting your profile, and should lead to more contacts. You’re under no obligation, so why not have as many options as possible (and really, are you so “athletic and toned” that you’ll only date someone who’s likewise)?

Go Live. Launch your completed profile on a Sunday. Then get busy looking for people to approach, enjoy the contacts that pour in for you, or both. If things go well, you may have dates set for the very next weekend, and be off and running.

Next time we’ll look at approaching people you’re interested in, evaluating and responding when you’re contacted, setting up that first date, and the date itself.

A Beginner’s Guide to Vinyl Red Lips: Lessons From Backstage at Nina Ricci

Photographed by Kevin Tachman

What’s more French than a slick of red lipstick? At tonight’s Nina Ricci show, makeup artist Aaron de Mey supplied the answer by turning the volume up on the classic Gallic color using a high-shine finish that had a distinctively all-American reference point. “It’s Coca Cola red,” he said of the perfectly calibrated shade, which struck an exact balance between red and orange undertones, and had a vinyl finish that was “almost like car paint.”

If a glossy crimson mouth seems high maintenance, it doesn’t necessarily have to be. The key, says De Mey, is all in the prep, and an extra two minutes might be worth the time, should your beauty reference be “Romy Schneider, the morning after—she’s put on sunglasses and a red lip and gone out on the street again.” Because really, whose isn’t?

Here, our four step guide to recreating the look.

Step 1: De Mey started with a blue-based Serge Lutens lipstick, which is a “really, really gorgeous red,” by layering it in a highly pigmented coat over the entire mouth.

Step 2: Next, he made it matte by pressing a one-ply tissue over the lips and blotting a bit of translucent powder over top. “It will really lock the color on to give it more longevity and keeps the gloss from bleeding later.”

Step 3: Once the shape was set, De Mey adjusted the shape with a matching red lip pencil to sharpen the edges. Rather than lining and filling in the entire mouth, he says,  it fine tunes the borders only where needed for a lighter touch.

Step 4: Finally, just before models stepped onto the runway, De Mey and his team applied a glimmering tomato-red gloss, which read as reflective rather than glittery and canceled out the blue undertones of his base coat for a perfectly balanced hit of universally flattering crimson, which the makeup artist  described as “sparkling, perfect, and as luxurious as a fast car.” Enough said, in any language.

Vogue’s Fall Movie Guide: 24 Movies You Should Watch This Season

hunger games mockingjay part 2

If spring is the season of slim pickings at the movies, and summer the time for celluloid junk food, then autumn—the season of mists and mellow fruitfulness, as John Keats once called it—is when the cinematic chefs serve up their most ambitious fare. Every single week you’ll find movies that, even if they aren’t always good, are genuinely trying to be. Here are the ones we’re really looking forward to.

Vogue’s Fall Music Guide: The 12 Albums You Need This Season

lana del rey

As you head indoors after Labor Day, let good music on good speakers be your consolation prize. Here, twelve albums to watch out for this fall, including big-ticket moments from Justin Bieber and Lana Del Rey—and a handful of surprises.

Empress Of, Me (September 11)

Empress Of is Lorely Rodriguez, a 25-year-old singer who writes, produces, and engineers everything entirely on her own, and who composed her debut album while living alone in a tiny town in Mexico. A feeling of seclusion is everywhere on this album, from the title—the defiantly independent Me—to the sense in all its songs that she is dancing by herself, even when laying her voice on top of a joyful club beat. Me is uniquely, undeniably pretty.

Lana Del Rey, Honeymoon (September 18)

Is it possible that Lana Del Rey is finally fed up? On the first single, “High by the Beach,” from her upcoming album, Honeymoon, Del Rey sounds ready to kick out whatever jerk caused the two albums’ worth of agita. What does Del Rey sound like without the toxic guy? Not all that different, actually: just as noirish, if maybe a little looser and jazzier. She’s left behind the psych rock of last year’s Ultraviolence, and though “High by the Beach” reignites some of the hip-hop influence of her first album, the other Honeymoon tracks released so far feature Del Rey singing like a crooning Isabella Rossellini in Blue Velvet, the character she was probably always destined to play.

Fetty Wap, Fetty Wap (September 25)

Is there a more joyful presence in music than Fetty Wap, the 25-year-old singer-rapper from New Jersey? His song “Trap Queen” has been inescapable this year, with Wap’s signature howl, which splits the difference between Screamin’ Jay Hawkins and Drake, ringing out from seemingly every passing car in America. His string of follow-up singles has all been promising, too, so expect this self-titled debut album to be a major crowd-pleaser.

Disclosure, Caracal (September 25)

It’s not easy to pull off a sophomore album when your debut lights the world on fire, as Disclosure’s first record of house music, 2013’s Settle, so forcefully did. “Latch,” which introduced the world to Sam Smith’s voice, is probably as close to a mandatory wedding party jam as anyone has recorded in this decade. But Disclosure, made up of brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence, has managed to make a second album, Caracal, that is a little poppier but not a huge departure. Smith is back for the first single, “Omen,” and Lorde and Lion Babe guest on a pair of exuberant tracks.

Julia Holter, Have You in My Wilderness (September 25)

Critics have used all kinds of labels to describe Julia Holter’s elusive music—“ambient pop,” “art pop,” and “baroque pop,” to name a few—but “sweater-weather pop” would work just fine, too. There are layers upon layers of ornate sounds in her music, and, coupled with her gleaming voice, Have You in My Wilderness feels like a cozy, if slightly ominous, embrace.

Janet Jackson, Unbreakable (October 2)

Everything teased so far from Janet Jackson’s new album—her first in seven years—is excitement-heightening. The opening single, “No Sleeep,” which hit the radio this summer, is promisingly slinky. There is a collaboration with Missy Elliott, in all of her post–Super Bowl glory. And, most awesomely, Unbreakable finds Jackson reuniting with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, the Minneapolis producers who collaborated on all of her best work, from Control through All for You.

Kelela, Hallucinogen EP (October 9)

And speaking of Ms. Jackson, Kelela sounds a bit like the Rhythm Nation pop idol on “Rewind,” the first single from her upcoming EP, Hallucinogen. The Brooklyn R&B singer is incredible at mixing and mashing influences, from techno to Y2K pop, and then spitting it all out in totally seductive, modern ways. Cut 4 Me, her 2013 debut mixtape, is a master class in contemporary cool, and all signs point to Hallucinogen being equally slick.

Alex G, Beach Music (October 9)

Alex G’s pensive indie pop has been an insider favorite for years, and his songwriting has garnered him comparisons to Elliott Smith, albeit a slightly peppier version. Now the 22-year-old artist is following up last year’s watershed DSU by releasing his first album on a major label. It finds him opening up his sound a bit—there’s a trumpet!—while still maintaining the intimacy that makes his music so inviting.

Joanna Newsom, Divers (October 23)

It’s been five years since Joanna Newsom put out her last album, an eternity to her loyal hive of enraptured fans. We still know very little about Divers, but the first single, “Sapokanikan,” is classic Newsom, influenced by the Old World but excitingly urgent, too. The song is named for the Lenape village that existed on the island of Manhattan before the Europeans arrived, and the video, directed by Paul Thomas Anderson (who directed Newsom in Inherent Vice), is a simple close-up shot of Newsom skipping through modern-day New York City, humming along as the song descends from its pleasant opening piano into slightly more foreboding sounds.

Grimes, TBD (October)

Grimes has been through quite a lot since the release of her highly acclaimed Visions, the album that made her a star in 2012. She reportedly recorded an entire album only to scrap it because, as she wrote on her Tumblr, “it was depressing.” A couple of one-off songs, “REALiTi” and “Go,” seemed to indicate an impending release, and then nothing came of them. But finally, in May, she confirmed in a series of tweets that her new album will come out in October. No title yet, but all signs point to it being worth the wait.

Justin Bieber, TBD (November 13)

If you’re not back on the Bieber bus—if the roasts and apologies have not been enough to earn your favor—let the overwhelming strength of his new music convince you. Bieber’s output so far this year has been impossible to dislike. First there was the Skrillex-and-Diplo-produced “Where Are Ü Now,” an angelic pop anthem that made perfect use of Bieber’s cherubic voice. And now there’s “What Do You Mean?” the first single from his upcoming comeback. The full album is sure to win back your heart, tears and all at the VMAs.

Tinashe, Joyride (November)

Tinashe’s Aquarius was one of the strongest debuts of last year, instantly minting her as a powerful new voice in R&B and pop. And yet, she hasn’t achieved the level of megastardom commensurate with the quality of her work. Joyride could change that. Though she has not released any songs yet, she has confirmed contributions from some of the biggest names in production, including Max Martin (he of “. . . Baby One More Time” and, more recently, “Can’t Feel My Face”), Dr. Luke, Hit-Boy, and Boi-1da. “I can’t be ignored,” she says in the album’s trailer, below. Nor should she be.

The Will They or Won’t Theys:
Frank Ocean, Rihanna, Kanye West, Adele

Being a music fan in a post-Beyoncé world is to be in a constant state of high alert. The biggest stars guard release dates as though they were gold codes, then drop music at the most unexpected of times. (Just last week, Miley Cyrus unleashed her new album in one swoop at the end of the VMAs.) So what do we know about the highly anticipated album releases of Frank Ocean, Rihanna, Kanye West, and Adele? Very little, except that they’ve been teased for what feels like centuries. All four are supposed to come out before 2015 is over, but don’t hold your breath—and keep an eye on Twitter.

John Oliver’s Guide To Everything Students Need To Know

In many parts of the country, the conclusion of Labor Day weekend marks the start of the school year, and while “Last Week Tonight” was off for the holiday, host John Oliver recorded a video that has everything students really need to know

Sort of.

In the four-minute YouTube clip, Oliver shares a bit of wisdom for each of the major subjects taught in school (and he tries to do it without swearing… but doesn’t quite succeed).

For American history: “Google ‘Warren G. Harding penis named Jerry’ right now,” Oliver advises, referring to the 29th president. “And you will not be disappointed.”

Oliver also touches on world history, especially the European explorers and colonists.

“Now, as adults, you will realize that these men were basically genocidal lunatics,” he says. “But for now, enjoy thinking of them as thrilling adventurers and discoverers.”

Oliver manages to get around to math, biology, chemistry and English as well — all within those four minutes — and even has a “Guide To Who Dies At The End” for many of the books students will be assigned to read for class.

Check it out in the clip above.

Andreea Diaconu

You don’t just look smart, you are smart: book smart, street smart, and fashion smart too. And you know the basics of back-to-school style as well as you know your ABCs. A luxe tee to layer under a cozy knit, boots, carryall, never-want-to-take-them-off jeans, a chill-stopping, head-turning topper, and, of course, a shoe for every occasion.

Without them your wardrobe would be like a book that was missing chapters. And given the wellspring of compelling new trends in the Fall collections, there are many stylish tales to tell. Feeling like a grunge goddess? Pair Madewell’s inkcheck plaid sweater with some Dr. Martens. Channeling Ali MacGraw? Cole Haan’s spruce green penny loafers will keep you right in step with classic collegiate style.

Think of this handy guide as the CliffsNotes to the best back-to-school basics—all $ 150 and under—and use the time you’ve saved to finish your Mensa application.

This Foolproof Guide Will Help You Get Out Of Things You Don’t Want To Go To

It begins innocently enough.

Your neighbor casually mentions an upcoming BBQ and you respond that it sounds like fun. The conversation turns to golf or harpoon guns or something else banal and you forget about the BBQ. Next thing you know, your family is responsible for bringing the potato salad to an all-day birthday party in a park across town. At the same time as the Niners game. And it’s the playoffs. And you hate potato salad.

We’ve all found ourselves committed to social events that either sounded like a good idea at the time but something came up, or that we were roped into against our conscious will. Bound by merciless societal norms, backing out sans excuse isn’t an option.

To help the over-committed un-commit gracefully, we’ve partnered with US Cellular to bring you a step-by-step guide to smoothly getting out of an undesirable party, shower, or event. To avoid awkward run-ins with the host in the future, read carefully and don’t skip a step:

1. Display Genuine Regret

First and foremost, you have to convey how unfortunate it is that you won’t be able to make it. The whole plan will fall apart if you don’t sell your regret. It reassures the host that you’re only skipping out because of unforeseen, uncontrollable outside factors. If you’re having a hard time with the delivery, channel your inner Ryan O’Neill or Tom Hanks (and not so much your Space Odyssey HAL).

2. Finely Tuned Excuse

A good excuse should be specific, but not too specific. Specific enough that it seems credible, but not so overly detailed that it feels forced. Illness is fine, but it’s tougher to give advance notice of an illness and you don’t want to inconvenience the party thrower unnecessarily. Instead, stick to events that came up without warning that take precedence for an obvious reason, like work-related projects or business trips. If necessary, you can also use family members as an out — blame it on the spouse or kids.

3. Pledge Future Commitment

This one is tricky because you don’t want to land yourself in the same predicament. Nevertheless, showing an interest in future plans reinforces step #1 and can often allow you to take the initiative. If your neighbor always throws BBQs on game day, you can propose something that fits your schedule better. If it doesn’t work out, it becomes more of a mutually unfortunate thing than just you being reticent.

4. Follow-up

The follow-up is key. Repeat steps #1 and #3 (not step #2 — remember, no over-selling), and reinforce the fact that you were genuinely interested. A simple text asking how it went usually works best.

5. Don’t Screw It Up

If you had to back out of the commitment for a less than savory reason (not everyone thinks football is as important as you), you want to make absolute sure you don’t screw it up by Tweeting “Touchdown” 10 minutes into the BBQ when you’re supposed to be at your spouse’s work function. Your digital trail is more closely watched than you probably realize. It also helps to have support from your family which brings us to…

6. Rehearse Alibi With Family

Your kids go to school together, your spouses go to the same gym, and you know people who know the same people. To make sure you don’t reveal conflicting stories, it might be helpful to rehearse the established alibi with the family.

7. Revel In Your Guilt-Free Freedom

Look, at the end of the day, the fact is that time is precious. Don’t spend your life doing things you don’t want to do. We all have to face uncomfortable social situations from time to time, so it’s best to do so with a plan. A well-crafted strategy will let you enjoy your activity of choice with peace of mind and ensure that you aren’t burning bridges or hurting anyone’s feelings. If you executed said plan well, make sure you enjoy the moment.

Many people are stuck with a decision they made — whether intentionally or unintentionally — in the past, but U.S. Cellular is offering an opportunity to walk away from your wireless ones. Switch to U.S. Cellular, get a better price, and get your entire existing contract paid off.

The Makeup Brush-Free Guide to Getting a Flawless Face

Alright, you pretty faces! So by now, we’re gonna guess you’ve seen our breakdown of the nine most essential makeup brushes you definitely should have in your makeup kits and use on the daily. But let’s be real: There are several scenarios that could play out where you just don’t have access to them. Whether you’re going on vacation and would rather make space for other goodies in your bag or you haven’t been able to purchase your collection of brushes yet, I have you covered! Here, I’m showing you how to apply your everyday makeup only using your fingers. Follow this tutorial to get the same pro-finish a brush would leave using zero tools.

2015-07-13-1436830495-8664132-makeup1.jpg

STEP 1: FOUNDATION/TINTED MOISTURIZER

2015-07-13-1436830526-7420407-makeup2.jpg

Pump a few drops of your liquid foundation or tinted moisturizer onto the back of your hand. Gently tap the product onto your three outside fingers with your opposite hand.

2015-07-13-1436830545-7515297-makeup3.jpg

To apply the product evenly, gently tap your fingers all over your face, making little dots of product that you will blend in by doing a combination of swiping and tapping motions.

STEP 2: CONCEALER

2015-07-13-1436830596-5577548-makeup4.jpg

Depending on they type of concealer you have, you will either use your finger to pick up the product or apply it directly to your undereye and any blemishes with the provided applicator. Either way, you want to blend your concealer with you fingers by gently tapping the product in place using your ring finger. Pro tip: it might feel more natural to use a different finger, but don’t! Because your ring finger is the most delicate, you’ll get the lightest touch with it.

STEP 3: BRONZER

To pick up your bronzer with your fingers, which may seem intimidating at first, use your pointer and middle finger to make small circular motions on your palette.

2015-07-13-1436830670-6016764-makeup6.jpg

To deposit onto your pretty face, simply make small circular motions on the hollows of your cheeks, up onto your temples and along your hairline and down along where your neck meets your jaw line. It helps to apply the product upwards toward your hair.

STEP 4: BLUSH

2015-07-13-1436830700-321050-makeup7.jpg

For your blush, use your middle finger and your ring finger to make small circular motions on the palette.

2015-07-13-1436830723-3854472-makeup8.jpg

Smile and start making small circular motions starting on the apples of your cheeks blending upwards toward your temples.

STEP 5: HIGHLIGHT EYES

2015-07-13-1436830750-2374976-makeup9.jpg

Using your ring finger, grab any eyeshadow that is a few shades brighter and lighter than your natural skin tone and apply directly to your brow bones, inside corners of your eyes and on the center of your eyelids. You want to use your ring finger to make sure you get the most delicate touch, which will help you to have a lighter hand and not end up with too much product on your eyes. The best way to get an even application is to do a combination of tapping and small swipes back and forth.

STEP 6: CONTOUR EYES

2015-07-13-1436830807-7078716-makeup10.jpg

Using your same ring finger, pick up an eyeshadow that is a few shades deeper than your natural skin tone to apply directly to the creases of your eyes. Make small circular and tapping motions to blend well.

STEP 7: LINER + MASCARA

2015-07-13-1436830820-3903343-makeup11.jpg

This is obviously a step you will NOT use your fingers for! 🙂

STEP 8: HIGHLIGHTER

2015-07-13-1436830844-4518206-makeup12.jpg

Use your ring finger and middle finger to apply a little of your favorite highlighter — a little goes a long way typically. Apply it above where you put your blush, down the bridge of your nose, slightly above the center bridge of your nose and above your cupid’s bow. Tap only!! You don’t want to make swiping motions with your highlighter because it can mess up the makeup foundation you already blended with the previous steps. This is meant to enhance what you’ve already done, so gently tap your highlighter into place!

STEP 9: POWDER

2015-07-13-1436830880-4319343-makeup13.jpg

Use your ring finger and middle finger to pick up your powder.

2015-07-13-1436830905-5148661-makeup14.jpg

You want to use your powder to set any parts of your face that have not already had a highlighter, shadow, blush or bronzer touch. This will help keep your skin from getting too shiny.

STEP 10: LIP GLOSS OR LIPSTICK

2015-07-13-1436830937-2638411-makeup15.jpg

Easy! Use any provided applicator or your finger to blend your favorite lip gloss or lipstick into your smacker. To blend with your finger, make small tapping motions. This will give your lips more of a natural-looking deposit of color that will perfectly enhance your glowing fresh face!

2015-07-13-1436830949-2799195-makeup16.jpg

For some of you, this is just how you do your makeup all the time! If this is new to you, I will say that it definitely takes a little practice to find the right touch, just like anything new. Personally, I am a HUGE advocate for using makeup brushes for so many reasons, but also think it is crucial to know how to get the job done without them. Have fun and use these as guidelines!

A Guide to the Best Bras for Your Cup Size

There are loads of bras out there and so many styles to choose from that no wonder 85% of American women are wearing the wrong-sized bra: it’s overwhelming. We likely fall into a cup we like, think it’s the one we should wear forever and possibly never think about switching.

How many of you reading this right now have bras that are years old? Two years? Five years? More?

Don’t worry: it’s not uncommon. But it’s time to consider getting a bra that really fits and finding the best style that will offer you the support and comfort you need for your cup size.

When Rachael Ray brought me on to her show to be a “Bra Boss for the Day” and do massive makeovers on the female family members from the show Cake Boss, I knew it would be a lively afternoon! Below are the results of our fun day together.

Here’s a way to decode some of the bras available and what cup sizes they can work well for. Of course, there is crossover (e.g. A cups will find fabulous contour bras out there), so this is meant simply as a guide to get you started to better fitting bras you love.

Wireless Bra (Ideal cups who can wear this: AA, A, some B)
Wireless bras are also know as soft cup bras and are as the name says minus the underwire. They are ideal for women size AA or A who don’t always need a maximum amount of support. Whereas in the past they have been identified as offering limited support, today’s wireless use other elements like padding, seams or lining to shape and support the breasts.

Push-Up Bra (Ideal cups who can wear this: A, B)
Push-up bras create the appearance of increased cleavage and volume using angled cups (which often have underwire), demi cups and/or different varieties of padding including graduated padding, which is thicker at the base of the cups and tapered towards the top of the cups.

Contour Bra (Ideal cups who can wear this: C)
The signature of this bra is that it’s known to hold its shape (if you accidentally squished it in your luggage it would spring back to life). The beauty of this style that sports an underwire is that it sculpts and smoothes and provides a symmetrical shape without adding size to the chest.

T-Shirt Bra (Ideal cups who can wear this: C)
These are seamless, ultra-contoured bras created to be undetectable under everything from thinly milled T-shirt to light, clingy knits. Words like smoothing, invisible, soft touch and barely-there are descriptors often used to describe the cups of these bras. An added benefit: many T-shirt bras have wider bands in the back to account for back flab and to smooth out the appearance of the back when wearing a T-shirt. These bras have all the advantages of a contour bra.

Full Cup Bra (Ideal cups who can wear this: D)
Full cups cover most if not all of the breast, offering both more coverage and support.

Demi Cup w/ ¾ cup coverage (Ideal cups who can wear this: D)
While most demi-cup bras typically only cover half of the breast, a more secure option for a D-cup is one that has ¾-cup coverage that doesn’t sacrifice an ounce of sexiness.

And for the ladies from Cake Boss who were all over size D cups, look at the variety of bras that worked for them below!

Lisa’s Seamless T-Shirt Bra

2015-07-07-1436296922-3716413-image001.jpg

Wife Lisa
Came in wearing: 34C demi-plunge bra
Actual size: 32G
New bra: Wacoal La Femme 30th Anniversary T-Shirt Bra in Jester Red, $ 62
The result: A seamless contour bra with all of the great support she was lacking (her previous bra was floating off of her body) without adding any weight to the size of her chest.

Lisa’s Lace Full Cup Bra

2015-07-07-1436297076-9113435-ScreenShot20150705at10.38.26PM.png

Sister Lisa
Came in wearing: 36D push-up bra
Actual size: 34 DDD
New bra: Panache Andorra Full Cup Bra in black, $ 62
The result: This lacy number offers maximum amount of surface area coverage that took care of previous side spillage that she was concerned about and a tremendous amount of support without sacrificing any sexiness, which she specifically requested!

Maddalena’s 3/4-Cup Demi Bra

2015-07-07-1436297171-3148701-image012.jpg

Maddalena
Came in wearing: 44C wireless bra
Actual size: 44E
New bra: Elomi Bijou Convertible Seamless Bra in black, $ 70
The result: Since Maddalena came in wearing a wireless bra, the transformation into this ¾-demi was incredible. By lifting her up it greater defined her waist, and as she said, ‘It woke me up!’

Grace’s 3-Part Bra

2015-07-07-1436297236-8620528-image017.jpg

Grace
Came in wearing: 34D plunge push-up
Actual size: 32F
New bra: Freya Fio Balcony Bra in nude, $ 58
The result: In her 3-part bra, which namely means her bra cup was divided by three seams, Grace got added support: the more seams, the more support and shaping! And this bra helped to bring everything front and center for her.

And the Band Begins to Play is an in-depth, 12-volume guide to every song recorded by the Beatles. Part Ten examines the LP Yellow Submarine. Going further than the usual song-by-song, album-by-album guide, it is a record of every moment that the Beatles came together to record, from the first EMI session in 1962 to their acrimonious break-up in 1970. In short, this 12-volume set is the blueprint to every single recording made by the Beatles: 12 albums and 22 singles which make a portfolio of 208 songs that undeniably changed the shape of modern music forever. From 'Love Me Do' to 'Let It Be', Steve Lambley provides full analysis of every track not only for its lyrical meaning, its position in the Beatles catalogue and the impact it made on the charts, but also from the point of the science of the songs. Thanks to the author's astute understanding of just how music works, as well as the recording processes of the day, this book includes a level of a musical analysis rare to career-spanning tomes today. The book includes a detailed description of the recording process of every track, with a breakdown of the instrumentation and details of overdubs. What's more, And the Band Begins to Play explains the wealth of production innovations and recording techniques used by the group which continues to inform popular music today. The story of the group's music also tells the story of the group itself. The book therefore takes the reader by the hand on a magical tour through the conquering of America, the band's film, TV and radio appearances, the "bigger than Jesus" storm, the death of Brian Epstein, the Maharishi experience, the rise and fall of the original Apple business, and much more. The appendices include detailed listings covering all the Beatles' recordings, including: – the original source of every quote used in the book – a complete UK and US discography – a chronology of all recordings – the dates and take numbers of all tracks Unquestionably, the Beatles remain the key band of the rock era. And the Band Begins to Play tells the story of their unique musical legacy.

The Secret to Getting Good Beach Waves: A Guide for Every Hair Texture

Photographed by Mario Testino, Vogue, June 2011

With city dwellers across the country spiriting away to the beach this weekend, we’re predicting a rise in carefree surf-tousled hair. Rivaling the most coveted beauty benefits of a day at the shore (including Vitamin D and calorie-torching activity), the bombshell appeal of ocean-infused waves is so celebrated that almost every beauty brand has made an attempt to bottle it. And it seems they have. According to editorial hair gurus Harry Josh and Renato Campora, a seaside jaunt isn’t necessary for authentic-looking salt-sprayed strands. “Texture is the key,” says Josh, who explains that the best way to re-create it is to first consider your own hair type, then invest in the right products.

In fact, for those blessed with naturally wavy hair, a texturizing mist, like John Frieda Sea Waves Salt Spray will do all the work in “amping up your hair to greatness,” says Josh. “It smells like the beach and will help activate the wave” à la Gisele or Daria.  Meanwhile, tight curls can rely on thick, heavier wax to relax their natural coils into looser waves. Very straight hair will need the gritty assistance of Bumble and Bumble’s Surf Spray, and fine strands can find body and movement with the help of a light cream. For example, on towel-dried hair, Campora creates a “weightless” foundation for grip with Number 4 Texture Styling Crème. “It gives you a little bit of control.” Then, to encourage a loose curl, “Toss your head over and scrunch it every five or ten minutes until it dries,” says Josh. Though a quicker route to a finished product can be found with a blow-dryer (on low power and high heat) and a diffuser.

No matter your hair, Campora recommends topping off the look with a blast of Orlando Pita dry shampoo at the roots, for a volumizing effect that speaks of the ocean, not of layers of product. “You don’t want your hair to get heavy, so you can keep this in your bag to give yourself volume whenever you need it, without feeling like [there’s anything in it.]” Meaning the look will last as long as your shampoo cycle—or your next great coastal getaway.

A Guide to the Best Made-in-America Fashions for the Fourth of July

Photographed by Arthur Elgort, Vogue, December, 1992

“America when will you be angelic?
When will you take off your clothes?”

Allen Ginsberg wrote these stanzas in his iconic poem “America” in 1956. Oh, Allen, wouldn’t you have been amazed last Friday when the Supreme Court became angelic? How delighted you would have been to see the hundreds of thousands pour down Fifth Avenue on Sunday, many of whom had indeed taken off their clothes?

As this particular Fourth of July approaches, we are more than proud to be Americans, and—because some citizens love to dress up—we are particularly thrilled to celebrate in gorgeous ensembles made entirely in the USA. Our suggestions range from chic outfits suitable for a clambake (OK, has anyone ever actually been to a clambake? For that matter, do you know anyone who has?) to a rooftop party (who says you can only have fun in the Hamptons? Watch the fireworks from your friend’s roof in Bed-Stuy!) to a picnic in the park—there’s an empty bench in Tompkins Square Park with your name on it.

Guide Shows Teachers How To Talk With Kids About Gay Marriage

The largest American LGBT civil rights organization and the largest teacher’s union want to help educators talk to kids about gay marriage.

The educational arm of the Human Rights Campaign Foundation and the National Education Association on Friday released a guide for educators to talk with students about marriage equality. The guide was put out the same day that the U.S. Supreme Court declared bans on same-sex marriage unconstitutional and said states must recognize same-sex unions.

The guide, titled “Who Can Marry Whom? Inclusive Conversations About Marriage,” includes sample conversations for teachers to have with students and a checklist for creating an inclusive school environment.

Here’s one of the sample conversations:

“Can Jorge’s dads get married? I thought two men couldn’t get married.”
“Yes, his dads can get married now. This summer, the U.S. Supreme Court
decided that all the states should allow two men, two women, or a man and
a woman to get married.”

The checklist for an inclusive school environment asks teachers to consider whether they use inclusive language on school forms, whether school art displays diverse family structures, and whether students are exposed to diverse role models in literature.

“Do staff and educators treat all families with respect and avoid stereotyping or judgment when communicating with two mom and two-dad, single-parent, racially diverse and/or multi-linguistic families?” asks the checklist.

The Human Rights Campaign also recommends books for kids that highlight diverse families with same-sex parents.

We asked some of our teacher Twitter followers about how they plan to discuss the topic with their students after the Supreme Court ruling. Here’s what they told us:

Does Your Face Cream Belong in the Refrigerator? A 3-Step Guide to Storing Beauty Products

Kate Moss Mario Testino Vogue

From technologically advanced retinols to face creams that share ingredients with your cold-pressed juice, our daily beauty regimens have never been more diverse. Which begs the question: Do some of these products really need to be kept in the refrigerator rather than the medicine cabinet?

Some beauty brands think so. Los Angeles–based Odacité sells a mini-fridge designed to keep its antioxidant-rich serums at 54–59 degrees Fahrenheit so that plant extracts remain fresh for as long as possible. But before you start tossing bottles of wine and stalks of rhubarb to make room for mascaras and moisturizers, cosmetic chemist Ni’Kita Wilson and chemist turned facialist Kristina Holey say there are simple guidelines to follow when it comes to storing your beauty arsenal. Here, from dark bottles to the products you probably never imagined would share space with your Greek yogurt, are their three-step pro tips.

1. What to keep out of direct sunlight:
Both Wilson and Holey agree that nothing from your beauty haul should ever be exposed to the fluctuating temperatures of steamy bathrooms or sun-soaked windowsills, as heat and light can change chemical structures, degrading a product’s potency and possibly creating an environment for bacterial growth. But certain ingredients are more prone to temperature-caused destabilization and should always be kept cool: Ascorbic acid (Vitamin C), retinol, benzoyl peroxide, DHA (an omega-3 fatty acid), and anything that’s preservative-free including organic lipsticks and cheek stains. Wilson stores these items on the lowest shelf in her home office, away from direct sunlight. “From my bedroom, my office is on the way to the bathroom, so it’s easy to pick them up and put them back,” she says. However, the latest high-tech nano formulas are more stable and Wilson says they don’t require “such tender loving care.”

2. What to keep in the dark:
Organic creams and serums, says Holey, should be treated like anything you would buy at the farmer’s market. “The key to using natural lines is to only buy what you will use in the next month or so for efficacy.” She evens trades out mascara and lipstick after about four weeks. Holey stores facial products in a black linen bag on her bedroom vanity. “I put facial oils on my body, so everything is in the same bag. I keep one bottle of In Fiore Face Oil Concentré in my purse. I move through it quickly so I’m not too concerned about it changing too much chemically,” she adds.

Dark bottles will also help prolong the efficacy of natural oils, serums, and sunscreens. But, the quickest tip for preserving any product is to put a lid on it. Oxidation—the chemical change that happens when oil comes into contact with air—can have more negative effects than temperature, resulting in spoiled solutions. Holey suggests closing bottles immediately after using them—especially if a shower is running—to keep out air and steam.

3. When keeping cool is necessary:
Some products, however, truly do last longer under cold temperatures, and the ones that will find a home among your produce may surprise you. Wilson acknowledges that she refrigerates her favorite perfumes, especially the “fine fragrances that I want to preserve for more than a year.” She says cold temperatures help slow the separation process of key ingredients in mixtures. “Nail polish is all about suspension,” she says. “Keeping the pigments suspended in the formula will preserve the life of the polish.”

Two days to discover not-to-be-missed places in the most beautiful city in the world, with local guests and an unexpected iconic bag (can you recognize it?)*

Are You Sure You Know Rome?

2015-06-16-1434486551-4778780-Rome1.jpg

Lorcan O’Neill
Via Orti d’Alibert, 1 (Trastevere)
The gallery of Irish gallerist Lorcan O’Neill is hidden in a small street in Trastevere. Important artists of the international contemporary scene are hosted here, including Francesco Clemente, Tracy Emin and Anselm Kiefer. Laurita Parrilla (in the picture with a Fendi Baguette), who manages the gallery, received us just before the opening of the solo exhibition of the Canadian photographer Jeff Wall. The opening of every show is celebrated with a toast in the soccer field of the senior center just across the way.

In The Old Mill

2015-06-16-1434486586-7422404-Rome2.jpg

Lanificio Cucina
Via di Pietralata 159/a
Tel 064501384 (Pietralata)
Until a short time ago the Lanificio wool mill of Pietralata was just an enormous, disused and falling down warehouse overlooking the Aniene in a district far from the center of the city. And then it became a culture and entertainment center, with dancing classes, vintage markets, and, most importantly, the Lanificio Cucina restaurant. Here it is possible to sit at a table in front of the large windows in front of the river, drink a glass of organic wine and eat refined organic dishes. It’s always open.

An Evening In Trastevere

2015-06-16-1434486613-6857242-Rome3.jpg

Trattoria da Teo
Piazza dei Ponziani 7 (Trastevere)
Sitting on the riverbank facing Tiberina Island lies one of the best restaurants in the city, tended to with passion by its chef, Teo, and his family. It serves plentiful portions of rigatoni amatriciana, artichokes Roman or Jewish-style and fine dishes of fish, such as prawn tempura or tomatoes stuffed with seared prawns, pachino tomatoes and basil. In times of economic crisis the latest craze with younger people is to have a pre-bill made, to see if they can allow themselves to eat more.

Stay In A Private Home

Street art on the wall
Behind the historical façades of Roman residential buildings hide breath-taking apartments. If you are staying a few days you can rent a house in Rome going through the “Wonder where to Stay” agency. wonderwhereto- stay.com

The Mod Hair Salon

2015-06-16-1434486743-6943942-Rome5.jpg

Via Urbana 52 (Monti district)

Behind the historical façades of Roman residential buildings hide breath-taking apartments. If you are staying a few days, you can rent a house in Rome going through the “Wonder where to Stay” agency.

In the district of Rome which is becoming the night life centre of the city even the hairdressers adapt. This is the case of Mod Hair Salon, which has the atmosphere of a barber from days gone by, but which is much more sophisticated, with vintage rock’n’roll décor. Open every day until 21.00, 22.00 on Wednesdays (you could find yourself sitting next to Riccardo Scamarcio who has his hair cut by Emanuele Vona or his partner Oni).

To Take Away

2015-06-16-1434486707-5861606-Rome6.jpg

Mia Market
Via Panisperna 225 (Monti district)
A wall covered with pages from old-fashioned botanical and recipe books, with baskets of organic fruit and vegetables resting on them. A counter with jars of fresh pulse salads and then cold meats, cheese and bread. At Mia Market you can do the shopping and take it home, or sit down to eat, reading the newspaper in a homely environment.

FISH!

2015-06-16-1434486794-1210348-Rome7.jpg

Fish Market
Via di Pietralata, 149b (Pietralata)
A successful experiment for this fish restaurant-market with its amusing and cheap formula: “choose your fish, how you’d like it cooked, take it to the table and eat.” The fish market is to be found in the converted industrial area of the Lanificio mill. Only open evenings. Bookings taken at 3470095009.

The Dreaming Atelier

2015-06-16-1434486771-7878738-Rome8.jpg

Livia Risi
Via dei Vascellari, 37 (Trastevere)
The atelier of the designer Livia Risi, granddaughter of the film director Dino, is a reflection of her world. Once through the door, you find yourself in a room of toys or dreams, which take their shape in the clothes designed by Livia, in the accessories and in the photos and drawings hanging on the walls.

Gossip At The Cemetery

2015-06-16-1434486816-4411457-Rome9.jpg

Protestant Cemetery
Via Caio Cestio 6 (Testaccio)
A large garden in the shade of the Cestia pyramid, with the tombs of poets, artists and travelers. In Protestant style: no macabre details, but English lawn, sculptures, maritime pines, field flowers and cats wandering around. Look for the gravestone with the inscription Novità? Where a curious intellectual rests, and whose friends, still today, go to tell him what the gossip of the moment is. In the Cemetery’s bookshop, you can find Alessandro Rubinetti’s romanticized guide book (publisher Iacobelli) to be read while sitting on the bench in front of John Keats’ grave.

Around The Ghetto

2015-06-16-1434486840-190758-Rome10.jpg

Kosher Bistrot
Via Santa Maria del Pianto 68-69 (Ghetto)
The first place of its kind to open on Piazza Costaguti, renovated by the architect and designern Marco Valenti in the style of the 30s revisited. Tables on the square to sit at and taste hot or cold dishes, kosher (like everything else) wine and mint tea with almonds at any time of day.

Aperitif Time

2015-06-16-1434486863-4474133-Rome11.jpg

Il Baretto
Via Garibaldi 24 (Gianicolo-Trastevere)
An old bar in a unique position between the Gianicolo and the Trastevere, Il Baretto was renovated by Allegra Marinucci and her husband Richard Ercolani with vintage decor, in stark contrast to the steel window frames and the large windows on the terrace. It opens at 5 p.m. Expect aperitifs and a DJ set.

Netflix Guide to Life’s Many Emotions

With Thursday’s early release of Orange is the New Black on Netflix, I realize my nights will soon be filled with Netflix binge watching (as if they aren’t every week…). I’m a self-proclaimed Netflix junkie, and the more marathons I watch, the more I believe that Netflix is slowly guiding me through life’s roller coaster of emotions.

Being able to escape reality (even if it’s only for an hour) has helped keep me sane in this overwhelming world we live in. Now, before I get backlash for having #firstworldproblems, I will say I tried to find some real-life scenarios we have all found ourselves in. So, which Netflix shows do I recommend specifically for life’s (sometimes silly) moods and dilemmas?

Let’s start with the most obvious young adult scenario: Heartbreak.
We’ve all been here — sitting on your bed with your headphones in; searching for the saddest song on your playlist sporting a gloomy face like you could be in the music video. Maybe it’s just me, but when I’ve had a broken heart in the past, I just want to wallow in it for a bit.

What you need: Gilmore Girls
This fun-loving show is about a mother and daughter duo who make life seem do-able. I have also found that the show’s small town setting in “Stars Hollow” makes me feel at ease.

You feel like a boss. You had a great day at work, and now you’re amped up!

What you need: House of Cards or Mad Men
Nothing says power like watching politicians duke it out. Plus, since you’re feeling a bit sassy, the scandalous scenes (well, they pretty much all are after the first episode) will keep you entertained and on edge. I am a tad biased for the show Mad Men since I work in television advertising, but it is uncanny how the industry’s jargon had stood the test of time.

You want to change your eating habits and start living a bit more healthy. So, this one I stumbled upon one Saturday night when I was bored…

What you need: Food, Inc. (Documentary)
This documentary opened my eyes to processed foods and well, meat in general. While I am not a vegetarian, it did make me think twice about what I was putting in my body on a regular basis. Aside from showing you some pretty graphic scenes, it kept me engaged throughout the entire program.

When you miss high school or college, and the carefree life that came along with it.

What you need: One Tree Hill or Friday Night Lights
There’s no show like One Tree Hill, it gives me an instant warm fuzzy inside while watching, and the cast brings something new to every episode. While its original air date was back in 2003, the show stayed on air for nine years allowing its fans to watch the growth and development (literally) of the cast. The show portrays what we all loved and hated during our high school years, and then dives into the tough issues young adults face today. Friday Night Lights brings me back to high school every time I watch it- young love, heartache, and a whole lot of drama all wrapped into an hour long show-YES.

When you just want to relax.

What you need: Weeds
There is something about the show Weeds that kept me hooked for all 8 seasons. The wittiness of the main character, Nancy Price Botwin (played by Mary-Louise Parker) brings light to an unfortunate situation with the passing of her late husband. She proves that in the worst of times you can find light at the end of the tunnel. While the show’s premise has a “darker” edge, the comic relief by the characters allows you to kick back and watch the story unfold.

When you want to laugh.

I couldn’t pick just one for when you’re in the mood for a chuckle, but here are my top 5:

  • The League-a show about a group of friends infatuated with fantasy football, let’s get real here…we can all relate.
  • Unbreakable-Main character, Kimmy Schmidt, is rescued after living 15 years in a cult and now has to navigate through her adult life without any real life experience. It reminds us just how remarkable life truly is!
  • Orange is the New Black-Season 3 is out!
  • Grace and Frankie-another Netflix original series
  • Zoolander– I had to pick one movie to throw in there. We mine as well get ready for the sequel set to hit theaters in February of 2016!

Ever wondered why some talented musicians never seem to get that far, yet another average musician seems to be getting all the breaks? This is no coincidence; those that know how to handle themselves in the music industry will generally do much better then those that don't. Being a successful independent musician isn't just about how talented you are. You could be one of the best singers or rappers in the world, but if you don't handle yourself and your music career correctly, you won't get very far at all. Thankfully, those traits needed to do well are ones that can be learned. In this guide, I aim to give you the tools needed to do well as an independent musician. This includes help on the mentality you need to adopt, and the knowledge of what not to do. This is not a guide on how to market your music or how to improve your talent, this is something much more, yet just as important. Have a look at the table of contents to see exactly what you get in this guide. If you want to do well in the music industry and avoid the common mistakes most independent musicians make, The Independent Musicians Survival Guide is for you. Pick up a copy right now. Additional Notes: This book is suitable for all musicians, no matter what genre of music you make. By the end of this book, you will have a good sense of what it takes to do well in your music career, you will know how much money you can really make as an independent musician, and you will hopefully have the motivation to go out and make things work for you. This music industry guide is written by Shaun Letang, owner of Music Industry How To. Other people that have contributed to this music business book include Christine Infanger at Thirty Roses, Chris Rockett at Music Marketing Classroom, and some of the Music Industry How To insider members.

Infographic: The Onion’s Guide To Beach Etiquette

The arrival of summer means that the nation’s beaches will soon be crowded with swimmers, tanners, surfers, and more, so it’s important for everyone to be conscious of each other’s space and needs. Here are some etiquette tips to ensure that everyone has a safe and relaxing time at the beach:

  • Help lifeguards do their jobs by letting them know in advance if you plan to drown that day
  • Avoid feeding seagulls less than half an hour before they get into the water
  • Remember that you are responsible for disposing of any garbage that bumps into you while in the ocean
  • Shout “Heads up!” in the half-second before your Frisbee corkscrews into a crowd of sunbathers
  • When using a portable radio or other music-playing device, keep the volume at a low level for all but the most epic of guitar solos
  • It’s considered courteous to refill …
