Zac Posen Presents Spring — With a Little Help From Friends

Like lots of designers, Zac Posen wears many hats. In fact, he says it shakes out to 16 collections a year. He designs for Brooks Brothers; recently updated the uniforms at Delta Air Lines; released a cookbook; judges on “Project Runway,” and released a documentary. But it was his namesake label that started it all.
To present that collection for spring 2019, Posen is once again forgoing a traditional runway show — something he has done for several seasons — in favor of images and a film. The difference this season is that the film has a more narrative- and character-driven feeling. Gia Coppola shot the piece, with Maya Thurman Hawke as muse. To Posen, Hawke was more than just a subject — both she and Coppola are close personal friends, and Hawke, who was looped in and confirmed while he was still designing the collection, helped to influence his designs for the season. So spring 2019 was a family affair.
“The original Zac girl is a creative free spirit. When I think of my early muses, this collection has almost come full circle to that idea. It’s not grande dame, or overt glamour, there is a new side to it,” he

This Healthy Meal Can Help With Prostate Cancer Prevention #REPRESENTMENSHEALTH

Chef Jernard Wells

Source: Urban One / Urban One

Urban One has launched the Represent Men’s Health initiative with the aim of raising awareness of how Black men are focusing on their minds and bodies to remain their healthiest. This week, the focus is squarely on prostate cancer, a deadly condition that, with diet changes along with routine screening, can be detected and contained and this cooking tip from Atlanta’s Chef Jernard Wells can aid in that journey.

Black men are 1.6 times more likely to receive a prostate cancer diagnosis and are twice as likely to die from it as noted by the Prostate Cancer Foundation. With regular exercise, scheduled doctors visits, changing our eating habits, and a proper screening, we can all “Represent Men’s Health” by lowering those numbers.

Take a look at how you can plan a healthy meal that helps to prevent prostate cancer with Chef Jernard Wells.

#REPRESENTMENSHEALTH will run weekly original content through July 24.

Selma Blair, Ali Larter Help Nyakio Celebrate Return to Ron Robinson

It was a literal homecoming for Nyakio Greico this week, as the founder of natural beauty brand Nyakio returned to Ron Robinson at Fred Segal Melrose, the Los Angeles specialty retailer where she launched her line 16 years ago.
On hand at the Ali Larter and Shannon Rotenberg-hosted party was Selma Blair, who was also at the first launch party. This time she had her eight-year-old son Arthur in tow, and Greico’s two kids were also there. “Where does the time go?” laughed Blair as she tousled his hair. Blair’s then-publicist, entertainment manager Troy Nankin, was Greico’s business partner when, as a former talent assistant, decided to pivot and launch a beauty line. He was also present. “So many things happened here at Fred Segal,” he said from his perch on the brick steps beneath the iconic red, white and blue awning. Old Guard faces in the crowd like makeup artist Monica Blunder, actress Amy Smart, producer Crystal Lourd and retailer Jenny Belushi agreed.
“I remember coming here when I’d first moved to L.A. and I drove a beat-up Mazda. My friend and I would never want to leave because everyone here was so beautiful. They’d keep trying to walk

4 Dry Shampoos That Will Help You Have a Better Hair Day

Dry shampoo’s main function is soaking up oil and grease, making it a must when there’s no time for a proper shower. But it holds a styling secret, too. “Dry shampoo helps conceal dirty hair while giving the appearance of more volume,” says Jordan Blackmore, co-founder of S.Oil  and Three Squares Studio in New York City. Dry shampoo’s plumping effect makes the stuff perfect for guys with thinning or fine hair, Blackmore says. “If you use a blow-dryer first, you can achieve the appearance of even more thickness,” Blackmore adds. Use somewhat sparingly, however; experts say you should still lather up about four times a week for hair and scalp health.

New York Cares and The Fashion Foundation Help New Yorkers in Need

‘TIS THE SEASON: More than halfway to its goal of collecting 125,000 donated coats, this year’s annual New York Cares Coat Drive has less than a week to go.
New Yorkers can drop off coats at multiple locations including the group’s West 31st Street warehouse, any New York Police Department precinct, all Queens library branches and Grand Central Terminal or Penn Station through Dec. 31. Those who don’t have jackets to give can text “coat” to 41444 to donate money that will be used by the nonprofit to buy and deliver coats. The city has at least 1.7 million people living below the poverty line including 60,000 who are without permanent housing, according to a New York Cares spokeswoman.
The group has collected and donated 1.8 million coats to New Yorkers in need over the past 29 years. This year’s requests from shelters, social service agencies and schools is an increase compared to last year’s tally of 109,000 coats.
Another local group, The Fashion Foundation, recently wrapped up another charitable initiative. Founder Amanda Munz helped to brighten the holidays for 100 students in three different Brooklyn schools by arranging for each of them to receive a complementary gift-laden backpack. Best Leather Gloves to Help You Get a Grip on Winter

Instead of treating gloves as a wardrobe afterthought, buy a quality pair. They’ll not only keep you warm, but they’ll look good with the rest of your clothes, too. And make sure they fit you. “Winter gloves should fit snugly but not tightly – they need to have room for air, which insulates,” says Bryan Freedman, owner of the San Francisco–based retailer Leather Gloves Online. “To find your size, wrap a tape measure around the middle of your palm. That number is your glove size. Then round up to the nearest whole size for winter gloves.” Here are four top-end leather and suede pairs we like.

Meet Giowana Cambrone, The Transgender Woman Who Tried To Help Brazil’s ‘Sustainability Network’ Push For More LGBT Rights

Giowana Cambrone is a charming woman with an incredible story. A transgender woman, LGBT activist, lawyer, professor of family law with a master’s degree in public policy and human development from Rio de Janeiro State University, Giowana participated in the coordination of the Rio de Janeiro branch of Rede Sustentabilidade (Sustainability Network) — a political party founded by Marina Silva– and played a key role in preparing the Brazilian Socialist Party (PSB)/Rede coalition’s program for the 2014 elections.

In an interview, she told us about her personal experience, her view on the hetero-cis-normative society she lives in, and explained Rede’s views on sexual minorities.

Giowana also offered details on the controversy around chapters that addressed LGBT rights in Marina Silva’s program during the 2014 presidential elections.

Let me start with a personal question: How did you realize you were a woman? What was going on in your mind then?
I’ve known I was different from the hetero-cis-normative standard ever since I was a child. I remember watching the Silvio Santos show, a talent show where drag queens were performing. And then the host asked one of the drag queens how she felt. She gave an answer that would be considered inappropriate today, but I completely related to it. She said she felt like a woman trapped in a man’s body. From that moment on, I got to know myself better and I thought: “I am not alone, there are other people like me.” But I lived in the state of Minas Gerais, and there was a lot of prejudice. I didn’t feel accepted. I felt guilty, abnormal and even sinful. But I overcame all that.

What has changed since?
A lot has changed. Today I feel like I’ve accomplished something. I lived a life that wasn’t mine. I was unhappy. I was trapped for 30 years, with an identity that wasn’t mine. Gender rules that are imposed on us are very strict, and they oppressively dictate our behaviors. The transition process was not without struggle and pain– both emotional and physical. I had to deconstruct an identity shaped by the gender assigned to me at birth, and build another one that actually represented me. It was like I was impersonating a character. There was no Giowana in the old Giowana.

In an earlier interview, you said: “We live in a state with an imaginary heterosexual population.” Could you explain to our readers what you meant by that?
Actually, this is a concept proposed by a feminist named Ochy Curiel, who developed the notion of the “heterosexual nation.” Using this concept, I realized that heteronormativity and cisnormativity are very prevalent among the hegemonic ruling class. And this is reflected in public policies, legislation and the entire structure of the state. As a result, it is very hard to approve legislation that favors the LGBT population, even when it addresses very basic things, such as same-sex marriage or the recognition of trans as an identity. This suppresses access to essential citizen rights.

What do you think about the controversy around the Family Statute?
The Family Statute is a stillborn law. Today, the definition of family is much more pluralistic and diverse. Laws often become irrelevant due to the changes in the social dynamics, thus losing their purpose. But this law has been proposed without a social purpose. That is why I say it is stillborn. Moreover, they are proposing a Statute that goes against the interpretation of the Supreme Federal Court (STF), which is the guardian of the Constitution. In fact, it proposes a threatening political discourse. The main problem is that it is a prohibitive and hate-oriented discourse. The proposed Family Statute violates the constitutional principles of equality, fairness and freedom. They are trying to approve a law that discriminates against other, non-standard family configurations…This greatly concerns me. What defines a family is the bond of love and affection, which cannot be extinguished by a law. The families outside this imposed “normative standard” will exist, regardless of the law.

You were the first transgender person to be appointed as part of the Sustainability Network. How was this experience? Are you no longer a coordinator?
I participated in the coordination of Rede Rio. It was a very good experience. I had to leave for personal reasons. I was busy getting my master’s degree and also going into the job market, which took up more of my time than I had hoped. But I’m still active with Rede and I’m dedicated to the project.

Many people mention the editing of Marina’s campaign program in 2014. How do you feel about what happened then?
I helped prepare that program. We held meetings with representatives of the LGBT groups in the coalition, and I drafted the proposals that would be submitted to the program. As a human rights activist for many years now, I learned that one must go for the whole package. And that’s what we proposed. However, we knew that there would be mediation. That is, the program would not include everything we proposed. Because a program means goals, for which you will fight with all your political capital to accomplish. In the meantime, between the proposals for the a program and the mediations, everything changed. Eduardo Campos died in an airplane accident, the campaign was reset, and Marina Silva had to take the lead. All of this disrupted the normal flow of events. On that Friday when it [the LGBT program] was launched, people called me and said: “The program is out, the program is out!” When I read it, I saw that the proposal had been published in full. They even kept my original punctuation. I was very pleased, of course, but I found it odd that they had published it in full. Obviously, there had been no mediation. The final, mediated version of the document was published the following day. I was very upset, not so much because of the program, which hadn’t been changed substantially, but because of the mistake [in the editing process].

Nevertheless, one must recognize that the proposed program was still the most advanced compared to those of the other candidates, because they kept the chapter that allows adoption by same-sex couples in the program, and upheld the João Neri Act, which provides for the civil requalification of transgender people. However, the misunderstanding that took place during the publication stage unfortunately weakened the campaign, and we started being attacked and accused of having changed the program after Malafaia’s (a conservative evangelical minister) opportunistic tweets.

Malafaia was never an ally of Rede, and is an extremely opportunistic public figure. Saying that Malafaia had a role to play in Rede means you know nothing at all about the movement. As I see it, Marina has no restrictions on LGBT civil rights. I think Marina is someone who is very open to this human rights issue. You just have to read the final version of the program to understand that. In the heat of the campaign, though, the winners were those who resorted to marketing strategies, rather than those who presented proposals and made written commitments.

Is there room for the LGBT population in Rede?
Of course! Rede was born with sustainability in mind. You cannot think of sustainability without considering diversity. Diversity applies to all aspects of life. There is cultural diversity, biological diversity, human diversity and, of course, sexual diversity. That’s one of Rede’s commitments.

It is a party that welcomes human diversity, a party that welcomes pluralism and the diversity of voices. Rede is not a party of one color. It was born with special attention to the human condition.

The Diversidade em Rede (Network Diversity) has used a horizontal approach and a knowledge-sharing exercise to discuss and build an LGBT agenda within the party. We have already gotten two resolution proposals approved, in Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, to guide the party’s policies regarding sexual diversity, as well as push for a secular state. Additionally, we have welcomed new congressmen and members of other parties, and shared our values and agendas with them.

Finally, what can people do to help improve the quality of life of the trans population?
There is so much, but at the same time it is very simple. The main problem is disrespect. It is as if society wished it could make transgender people invisible. But they exist. They are a reality that most people would rather not see. They are bodies that challenge the concept of gender. “Abnormal” when compared to social standards and relegated to societal margins.

The main problem is in not acknowledging transgender identities, which leads to other problems, such as difficulties in finding jobs. The labor market rejects them. There is a lack of opportunity. Today, approximately 90 percent of this population are employed as sex workers. No other oppressed or marginalized population, women, black people or any others, has ever been reduced to a single economic activity. I am not judging those who work in this industry willingly. The problem is when it is the only option.

If you don’t work, you don’t live and you don’t eat. Some people think that the transgender population lives on air, or glitter, or glamour. No, transgender people have to eat, have to drink and have to dress. They must have at least two meals a day. They must have access to health care and education. Now. And from time to time, they should be able to go to the movies.

However, these needs are neglected. While the rest of the LGBT community is discussing and claiming their civil rights, transgender people still have to discuss their rights to the most basic needs. Even the physiological ones, such as which restrooms they are allowed to use, or social rights, like work, health care and education. Something unthinkable in the 21st century.

You Can Help Pick This Year’s Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame Inductees

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame just announced this year’s nominees for induction into its ranks. The 15 nominees — including Janet Jackson, Nine Inch Nails, The Smiths and Chaka Khan — span many genres, styles and time periods, though to qualify, they have to have released their first album or single at least 25 years ago.

Here’s the full list of nominees, in alphabetical order:

  • Chicago
  • Cheap Trick
  • Deep Purple
  • The Cars
  • Chaka Khan
  • Chic
  • The J.B.’s
  • Janet Jackson
  • Los Lobos
  • Steve Miller
  • N.W.A.
  • Nine Inch Nails
  • The Smiths
  • The Spinners
  • Yes

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame — located in Cleveland, Ohio — doesn’t have a set number of slots open for induction each year, though a representative said that they usually aim to admit five performers, plus several more in other categories.

The final list of inductees will be determined by votes from more than 800 musical artists, professionals and historians from around the world; each will be able to select up to five of the nominees.

In addition, fans everywhere will be able to vote for inductees online — including right here:

The five artists that get the most votes from online fans will be added to a “fans ballot” that will be tallied along with the ballots from the Hall of Fame’s panel.

The names of the inductees will be revealed in December, and the actual induction will take place April 2016 in New York City.

Kentucky Clerk Who Refuses To Issue Gay Marriage Licenses Begs Supreme Court For Help

After defying multiple orders to issue marriage licenses to gays and lesbians, a Kentucky clerk is taking her case to the Supreme Court.

Rowan County clerk Kim Davis on Friday filed an emergency request with the court to put a temporary hold on a lower-court ruling that effectively forces her to begin serving gay couples, saying that complying with the order would violate her religious beliefs.

According to Davis’ petition, her “conscience forbids her from approving” marriage licenses to gay couples “because the prescribed form mandates that she authorize the proposed union and issue a license bearing her own name and imprimatur.”

“She holds an undisputed sincerely-held religious belief that marriage is a union between a man and a woman, only,” the petition continues. “Thus, in her belief, [same-sex marriage] is not, in fact, marriage.”

Equality Case Files, a nonprofit that tracks litigation around same-sex marriage, posted a copy of Davis’ filing on its website. The filing can be read in full here.

Davis’ request was addressed to Justice Elena Kagan, who oversees emergency petitions from Kentucky. Justices from time to time are asked to review such petitions, which are only procedural in scope and are meant to delay implementation of lower-court rulings. Kagan could either act on Davis’ petition on her own or refer it to the full court for adjudication.

The Supreme Court ruled in June that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marry. Following the landmark ruling, Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear — who was one of the defendants in that case — ordered state clerks to begin issuing marriage licenses to gay and heterosexual couples alike.

But Davis refused. And then refused again after she was sued and was ordered by a federal court to comply. On Wednesday, an appellate court told her that she had “little or no likelihood” of winning her case.

In her Friday petition to Kagan, Davis argues that adding her “name, authorization, and approval” to marriages by gay couples would amount to a “searing act of validation” that “would forever echo in her conscience.”

The petition goes on: “If Davis’ religious objection cannot be accommodated when Kentucky marriage licenses are available in more than 130 marriage licensing locations … then elected officials have no real religious freedom when they take public office.”

That’s the crux of Davis’ legal argument, but any Supreme Court action in response would be much narrower in scope. Rather than opining on whether Davis’ religious freedom is being violated, a ruling from Kagan or from the full court would be limited to deciding whether to halt the original court order requiring Davis to issue marriage licenses to all couples.

According to BuzzFeed’s Chris Geidner, that court order is set to go into effect on Monday.

David Ermold and his partner have been turned away by Davis’ office twice. Ermold told The Associated Press that all the back-and-forth is “getting tedious.”

“We get torn down, built back up, torn down, built back up,” he said. “It’s emotionally draining.”

This Foolproof Guide Will Help You Get Out Of Things You Don’t Want To Go To

It begins innocently enough.

Your neighbor casually mentions an upcoming BBQ and you respond that it sounds like fun. The conversation turns to golf or harpoon guns or something else banal and you forget about the BBQ. Next thing you know, your family is responsible for bringing the potato salad to an all-day birthday party in a park across town. At the same time as the Niners game. And it’s the playoffs. And you hate potato salad.

We’ve all found ourselves committed to social events that either sounded like a good idea at the time but something came up, or that we were roped into against our conscious will. Bound by merciless societal norms, backing out sans excuse isn’t an option.

To help the over-committed un-commit gracefully, we’ve partnered with US Cellular to bring you a step-by-step guide to smoothly getting out of an undesirable party, shower, or event. To avoid awkward run-ins with the host in the future, read carefully and don’t skip a step:

1. Display Genuine Regret

First and foremost, you have to convey how unfortunate it is that you won’t be able to make it. The whole plan will fall apart if you don’t sell your regret. It reassures the host that you’re only skipping out because of unforeseen, uncontrollable outside factors. If you’re having a hard time with the delivery, channel your inner Ryan O’Neill or Tom Hanks (and not so much your Space Odyssey HAL).

2. Finely Tuned Excuse

A good excuse should be specific, but not too specific. Specific enough that it seems credible, but not so overly detailed that it feels forced. Illness is fine, but it’s tougher to give advance notice of an illness and you don’t want to inconvenience the party thrower unnecessarily. Instead, stick to events that came up without warning that take precedence for an obvious reason, like work-related projects or business trips. If necessary, you can also use family members as an out — blame it on the spouse or kids.

3. Pledge Future Commitment

This one is tricky because you don’t want to land yourself in the same predicament. Nevertheless, showing an interest in future plans reinforces step #1 and can often allow you to take the initiative. If your neighbor always throws BBQs on game day, you can propose something that fits your schedule better. If it doesn’t work out, it becomes more of a mutually unfortunate thing than just you being reticent.

4. Follow-up

The follow-up is key. Repeat steps #1 and #3 (not step #2 — remember, no over-selling), and reinforce the fact that you were genuinely interested. A simple text asking how it went usually works best.

5. Don’t Screw It Up

If you had to back out of the commitment for a less than savory reason (not everyone thinks football is as important as you), you want to make absolute sure you don’t screw it up by Tweeting “Touchdown” 10 minutes into the BBQ when you’re supposed to be at your spouse’s work function. Your digital trail is more closely watched than you probably realize. It also helps to have support from your family which brings us to…

6. Rehearse Alibi With Family

Your kids go to school together, your spouses go to the same gym, and you know people who know the same people. To make sure you don’t reveal conflicting stories, it might be helpful to rehearse the established alibi with the family.

7. Revel In Your Guilt-Free Freedom

Look, at the end of the day, the fact is that time is precious. Don’t spend your life doing things you don’t want to do. We all have to face uncomfortable social situations from time to time, so it’s best to do so with a plan. A well-crafted strategy will let you enjoy your activity of choice with peace of mind and ensure that you aren’t burning bridges or hurting anyone’s feelings. If you executed said plan well, make sure you enjoy the moment.

Many people are stuck with a decision they made — whether intentionally or unintentionally — in the past, but U.S. Cellular is offering an opportunity to walk away from your wireless ones. Switch to U.S. Cellular, get a better price, and get your entire existing contract paid off.

Bryan Fischer Can’t Help Being Homophobic, He Was ‘Born This Way’

Bryan Fischer is now adopting Lady Gaga’s pro-equality mantra and twisting its message for his own, anti-gay argument.

On his “Focal Point” radio show this week, the conservative host and former Director of Issues Analysis at the American Family Association said that the only justification in identifying as a Christian in today’s society was that he was “born this way,” Right Wing Watch first reported

“Who would choose, at this time in our nation’s history, to be a Christian? You’re ridiculed. You’re mocked. You’re made fun of,” he said. Pointing to the case of Kentucky clerk Kim Davis, who is facing a lawsuit for refusing to issue marriage licenses to both straight and same-sex couples following the Supreme Court’s June 26 ruling on marriage equality, he added, “Who would choose a lifestyle where you are the unending subject of ridicule, mockery, and contempt by liberals in society, by elites, by professors, on the media, by politicians? Who’s going to choose that?”

“So our defense is, hey, I was born that way,” he said, citing what he described as an “inner revulsion” to homosexuality.

Fischer, of course, is no stranger to anti-LGBT remarks. He’s rallied against the pro-equality arguments seen in “Modern Family,” Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s marriage equality anthem “Same Love,” and even a recent Burger King campaign.

Still, his latest is one for the books. Way to go, Mr. Fischer. If you’re trying to justify a homophobic mindset, you might be better off NOT citing one of the world’s foremost gay icons.

Here’s How The HPV Vaccine Can Help Cut The Risk Of Cancer In Gay Men

Each week HuffPost Gay Voices, in a partnership with blogger Scout, LGBT HealthLink and researcher Susana Fajardo, brings you a round up of some of the biggest LGBT wellness stories from the past seven days. For more LGBT Wellness visit our page dedicated to the topic here.

HPV Vaccination Cuts Anal Cancer Risk By 63%

Many HIV-positive queer men already receive treatment for high-grade anal intraepithelial neoplasia (HGAIN), a condition that can lead to anal cancer. Researchers added in an HPV vaccination to HGAIN treatment and reduced the lifetime risk of anal cancer by a whopping 63%!

#TransHealthFail Summarized

Now that #TransHealthFail has taken off on the interwebs, Mashable has nicely taken those posts and summarized six ways the health care system doesn’t work for trans people. We love seeing the big picture and seeing Mashable cover trans health.

Still So Little Money For LGBTQ Research

Researchers are still monitoring NIH to see how many of their projects address LGBT health. In the most recent pass (no T this time), they found if you look beyond HIV, only 10 of 27,000 grants in 2012 were for LGB health. Even worse, ¾ of the Institutes at NIH funded no research about us that looked beyond HIV at all. As other researchers point out, this needs to change.

Eating Disorders So Much Worse For LGBTQ College Students

It looks like eating disorders hit LGBTQ students the hardest. A new study found that 16% of transgender college students had an eating disorder, a rate five times higher than that of cisgender students. LGBTQ students were also twice as likely to have induced vomiting and were more likely to use diet pills than straight students.

HIV Disclosure Rare Among Straight Men Who Sometimes Sleep with Men

This one’s a doozy. A new study of men who identify as straight but sometimes have sex with men found that 1) 58% were HIV-positive and that 2) they usually told their female partners about being HIV-positive, but hardly ever told their male partners. Not cool, guys.

Youth Pride Clinic Helps LGBTQ Teens

Here’s a happy story: after seeing too many frustrated patients and awkward doctors the Children’s National Medical Center added a Youth Pride Clinic, designated afternoons where LGBTQ teens can get help in a judgment-free zone with docs who know what’s up. So simple! Why didn’t we think of that?

How To Help Your Kids Stand On Their Own

While parenting can be one of the most rewarding jobs, it can also be daunting. “There is a natural age-old tension that all parents face between nurturing and protecting your child — making sure they have what they need and they’re safe — versus preparing them [for the world], which means you’ve got to let them scrape knees,” says Dr. Phil in the video above. “You’ve got to get them out there to learn what they need to learn. Over-indulgence is not a gift to children.”

Explaining that we live in an “eat what you kill world,” Dr. Phil adds, “If we allow our children to get by without being the absolute best that they can be, without using all their skills, ability, traits and characteristics, we truly are cheating them. Don’t feed your own dependency needs by keeping them close to you. Help them stand on their own.”

10 Miranda Lambert Songs That’ll Help Her Cope With Her Divorce

On Monday, Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton dealt a major blow to diehard fans with the announcement that they've divorced after four years of marriage. For nearly a decade, it seemed no one could dethrone them as the new reigning prom king and queen of country music; they'd ostensibly been crowned the Faith Hill and Tim McGraw of Nashville's next generation. But with the marriage now dissolved and Miranda reportedly having already packed her bags (and animals) at their Oklahoma ranch, we're already overwhelmed with heartache. To Miranda's advantage, though, she's got an entire career's worth of songs to refer to while she copes. (Never forget, she once wrote an entire album called Crazy Ex-Girlfriend.) We made a playlist of ten Miranda Lambert songs she might want to consider playing through each stage of her divorce.

Aretha Franklin sings praises of Illinois after highway help

CHICAGO (AP) — Aretha Franklin's spokesman said the Queen of Soul was grateful and exclaimed "Hallelujah!" after the state of Illinois helped out when her tour bus broke down on the way to Chicago and left her stranded along a highway. Transmission problems stopped the bus around 1:20 a.m. Monday a few miles from downtown on eastbound Interstate 290. Franklin's assistants started calling car services to transport her from the side of the road, but …

Women Take On Body Censorship With Help From Male Nipples And Photoshop

Male nipples are having a moment, and it’s surprisingly all in the name of freeing the female body from censorship.

Last June, artist Micol Hebron posted an image of a male nipple on Facebook and suggested that women replace their nipples with the template to make them acceptable for social media.

TBT to that time, over a year ago (June 2014) that I posted an image of male nipple and told everyone to put it over…

Posted by Micol Hebron on Friday, July 3, 2015

The idea recently began to recirculate across social media, and women are using Photoshop to cover their bare breasts with male nipples. Though some photo-sharing platforms routinely remove women’s images in which their nipples are exposed, men’s topless photos are fair game.

Which provides an obvious solution:

Male nipples are so lovely… #freethenipple #malenipples #freethenipplecampaign #nipples @freethenipple

A photo posted by rekha Garton (@rekhagarton) on

According to Instagram’s community guidelines, “female nipples” are allowed in posts, but only in certain contexts.

Throwback. #MaleNipple #FreeTheNipple

A photo posted by Chàlè (@chale_sf415) on

The Free The Nipple movement, a campaign focused on the general censorship of women’s nipples, also urged women to upload images and replace their offending lady areolae with virtual male nipple stickers. Free The Nipple advocates for equal rights for men and women as well as the right to comfortably breastfeed in public. It spreads its mission through social media and a film (aptly titled “Free The Nipple”) that “follows a group of young women who take to the streets of New York City topless, to protest the archaic censorship laws in the United States.”

Singer Courtney Love shared her support for the campaign with an Instagram post recalling Hebron’s idea and challenging the photo-sharing platform’s guidelines.

Other celebrities to get behind Free The Nipple include Miley Cyrus and Lena Dunham. Most recently, Chrissy Teigen had NSFW photos from a W Magazine photo shoot taken down and responded with another topless pic and a strategically placed hairspray bottle.

Whether it’s a hairspray bottle or a male nipple, covering female nipples is easy. But if the Free The Nipple movement and its supporters have anything to do with it, it will soon be unnecessary.

How One 14-Year-Old’s Dream To Help Underprivileged Girls Became A National Success

Most 14-year-olds are busy studying for biology tests, trying out for school sports teams and musical productions, and searching for spare time to sleep. Not Allyson Ahlstrom.

At age 14, she started a non-profit organization, and nearly six years later, Threads for Teens is a nationally-recognized organization doing incredible work. The organization’s mission statement explains that it aims to inspire confidence in young women by providing underprivileged teen girls with the opportunity to pick out a new outfit or two from the back of the company’s mobile boutique, which is run out of the back of a pink 18-wheeler.

The Threads for Teens on Tour truck!!! #cantwaittostart #threadsforteens

A photo posted by threadsforteens (@threadsforteens) on

Threads for Teens is based out of Santa Rosa, California, where they have one stationary store. Their clothing racks, and those on the touring truck, are stocked with clothing and accessories which have been donated by a number of local stores as well as nationwide chains including Santa Rosa’s Punch Clothing, LF Stores, Claire’s, and their latest partner, Rue 21.

Ahlstrom has been recognized by dozens of local and national news stations, and featured on TV shows including the Queen Latifah Show and the TODAY show.

And it doesn’t look like Ahlstrom will be stopping anytime soon. This fall, Ahlstrom is taking her organization and its trusty mobile store on tour around the country to deliver clothing to young women all over the nation.

Ahlstrom told the Huffington Post that her initial inspiration for the organization came from reading a book about other young entrepreneurs called Generation Change.”The book was about different service projects teenagers across the country led, some even as young as 12! It was at that point that I decided to do something myself. I came up with the idea for a one-time clothing drive, that has since grown into a national non-profit organization.”

Asked about her mentality throughout the process, Ahlstrom said “I never thought about not being able to succeed, I mostly thought about how I could accomplish the clothing drive. When starting a project, I think it’s important to have big dreams, but to also be realistic about what will happen to begin with. For me, giving ten girls a new outfit was what I wanted to accomplish. I did not start out thinking about going on a national tour.”

As for her advice to young people who are interested in making a real difference in their communities, Ahlstrom says, “Absolutely do not doubt anything!” She says she was surprised by how eager people were to serve their community and pitch in. She also reminds us that no act is too small to count, saying “volunteering for an hour a week (4 hours a month), can have a profound impact on an organization. Making an impact does not have to be on a gigantic scale.”

Ahlstrom says she wants to “grow Threads for Teens into a global girl empowerment organization.” She says she hopes to “open boutiques in all fifty states and around the world,” and even “develop girl empowerment curriculum, build a scholarship endowment, and host a girls summit.”

Check out the Threads for Teens Facebook page and Twitter profile to stay up to date on Ahlstrom’s progress.

A Potato Salad Recipe So Healthy It May Help You Burn Fat

If you strive to eat healthily but often crave carbs, here’s one way to indulge without destroying your diet: healthy lemon potato salad. Nutritionist Keri Glassman shares her recipe in the video above for an alternative to mayonnaise-based potato salad, and explains how potatoes can actually help curb your hunger.

“Potato is one of my favorite ways to indulge in carbs,” says Glassman, whose recipe is made with olive oil and Dijon mustard, as well as herbs and spices. “[Potatoes] contain something called resistant starch, especially when the potatoes are cold,” she explains on The Doctors. “Resistant starch helps promote your satiety hormone, so it actually helps you feel fuller. It also helps you burn fat faster. You actually use fat for fuel better when you’re eating a certain amount of resistant starch.”

Try Glassman’s recipe:

5 Ways to Help Your Kids Thrive After Divorce

Divorce is prevalent in American culture nowadays. All divorces are painful, but those between parents of small children can be particularly hard, since you worry about your children’s emotional welfare on top of all of the other stressors involved in your divorce. Amidst all of the pain and chaos of your divorce, making sure the kids are okay is of paramount importance for most parents.

As a therapist in private practice, and the author of the upcoming book How to Talk to Your Kids about Your Divorce: Healthy, Effective Communication Techniques for Your Changing Family, parents ask me many questions about how to help their kids deal with divorce in the healthiest possible way. Here are five tips to help your kids cope and even thrive after divorce.

1. Be honest.
Make sure that your kids know that the divorce is final and that you won’t be reconciling with your co-parent. Additionally, admit if you are sad about the divorce; your child will likely be upset and this will validate his or her emotions. If you are going to have to change your child’s financial situation or your child may not be able to engage in certain valued activities, be open about this as well, and empathize with this situation.

2. Speak well of your co-parent.
No matter what circumstances led to your divorce, there is nothing positive to be gained from criticizing your co-parent in front of your kids. Remember, when you badmouth your child’s other parent, it’s like your badmouthing 50 percent of your child. Children need to love and respect both parents, even in the case when a parent is absent and the child can only have a parent-child relationship in the child’s imagination.

3. Don’t confide in your child about adult matters.
It is easy to let yourself slip, particularly around older or very empathic children, and allow a dynamic to develop where your child comforts you rather than the other way around. Even seemingly precocious children are greatly stressed by having to listen to adult thoughts and feelings, and kids begin to feel that their responsibility is to care for you, instead of feeling like a child themselves.

4. Keep routines stable.
Establish as predictable a routine as possible so that your child knows what’s coming next. In the case where your co-parent acts unpredictably, focus your efforts on your child’s experience when he or she is with you. Pick your child up at the same time, make playdates with the same friends, and, unless finances become too strained, keep your child in the same activities.

5. Give your child extra love.
Spend quality time with your child, check in to ask how he or she is feeling, do fun activities one-on-one and tell your child openly how much you love him or her. There is no amount of affection that is too much; your child will feel insecure about your changing family structure and needs to know that your love and affection will never go away.

Need to File for a Divorce!

Employers Far From Showbiz Can Help Veterans By Copying Jon Stewart

When Sgt. Sarah Serrano ended active duty with the U.S. Marines in 2009, she returned to Los Angeles to pursue her civilian dreams of acting and writing.

Serrano threw herself into networking, but as she told The Huffington Post, “One year and zero professional connections later, I realized why so many burn out quickly.”

The military doesn’t prepare veterans for an industry that trades in elbow-rubbing and name-dropping, while vets find themselves typecast — as providers of security and law enforcement.

“I cannot tell you how many times police departments have tried to recruit me,” Serrano said. “It can be anything from mall security guard to Border Patrol, it’s hard to get employers to see outside the uniform.”

sarah serrano

Veteran Sarah Serrano is a model, actress and writer who works with Veterans in Film and Television. (Photo courtesy of Sarah Serrano)

What society doesn’t see is the individual, Serrano observed. “We are usually seen as extreme cases of people in need of charity or acting with heroic valor, but there is so much more in-between.”

Serrano now writes, acts and models in addition to working with the LA-based group Veterans in Film and Television. The VFT links veterans with film and TV opportunities — and regularly sends members to specialized boot camps run by Jon Stewart and his crew at “The Daily Show” to help vets break into the business.

the daily show jon stewart

On Monday, The New York Times revealed that over the last few years, “The Daily Show” has been quietly running a program aimed at boosting veterans with film and television ambitions.

A request for Stewart to mentor a veteran sparked the idea for the Veteran Immersion Program, “Daily Show” senior coordinating producer Elise Terrell told The Huffington Post on Wednesday. Terrell and production manager Camille Hebert are the chief architects of the program and have been involved since its beginning in 2013.

“Jon came to Camille and myself because at the time we ran the internship program here,” Terrell told HuffPost. “He wanted to create a program for veterans to expose them to some of the behind-the-scenes aspects of television production and the entertainment industry.”

jon stewart veterans

Each five-week session brings together 24 veterans who use the “Daily Show” studio as their classroom. Once they’ve spent a week immersed in every aspect of production, they meet with the specific department (writers, producers, etc.) they want to learn more about. The program, which runs nights to accommodate the vets’ work schedules, ends with a career fair to help participants find opportunities in the film and TV business.

Several participants have gone on to land jobs with “The Daily Show,” “The Tonight Show” and NBC, according to Terrell.

Early on, there had been some concern about a potential culture clash between the “Daily Show” staff and the veterans, she said, but that quickly melted away. Now the program produces close bonds and gratitude on both sides.

Terrell recalls the first year of the program: “The veterans made us these dog tags and commemorative military medals and gave us the tags with our names on them. … It felt so ridiculous because we couldn’t thank them enough. This whole program has been trying to thank them for their service. it was this mutual thank fest.”

She remembers one veteran saying at the end of the course, “I got out of the military, I didn’t know what I wanted to do. I felt totally lost. After six weeks, I know what I want to do and I don’t feel lost anymore.”

rebecca murga

Veteran Rebecca Murga is now a writer and filmmaker. (Photo courtesy of Rebecca Murga)

One veteran who has moved into the entertainment industry is writer-director Rebecca Murga. Once she served several tours in Iraq, Afghanistan, Kuwait and Qatar as a public affairs officer following 9/11, and she is still a captain in the Army Reserve. She told HuffPost that vets with Hollywood dreams need to figure out the art and craft of filmmaking and the entertainment business itself.

“Unfortunately the military doesn’t teach you any of those things,” Murga said.

But what people do learn in the military — how to be resourceful, lead others and never quit — can be put to use in any industry. “Being a good film director is being a good leader, and leadership is a characteristic I developed in the Army,” said Murga.

Indeed, Terrell and her “Daily Show” colleagues are hoping that other industries where veterans aren’t commonly found reach out to them as well.

“The formula can really be applied to any sector: the medical industry, the financial sector,” Terrell said. “There’s always a way to apply this program to any kind of workplace. It’s easier than it sounds. It’s rewarding both on personal levels and on professional levels, and the veterans that have been hired on shows have contributed tenfold.”

In the New York Times article, Stewart said his show’s idea “is ready to franchise,” and he encouraged copycats.

“It isn’t charity,” he said. “To be good in this business you have to bring in different voices from different places, and we have this wealth of experience that just wasn’t being tapped.”

Serrano noted that veterans also offer great diversity — something that many industries could use more of.

“Veterans’ voices are so diverse because we are drawn from all segments across America to serve,” she said. “Less than one percent of Americans serve in the military, but that one percent is richly diverse.” She added that veterans “have stories that the average American doesn’t.”

One other benefit of military training: workplace tidiness.

“They clean up after themselves,” Terrell said of the veterans. “On the late nights that they’re here, we order pizza for them and they always stay and help us clean up.”

Help Improve Nail Salon Conditions By Participating In The #HandleWithCare Campaign

Ever since Sarah Maslin Nir’s piece in The New York Times exposed unsafe working conditions, abuse of workers and low wages in the nail salon industry, we’ve all been left wondering what we can do to help.

One person who’s stepped up to the plate is Pippa Lord, founder of Handle With Care. The website and corresponding hashtag has gained traction from nail artists, customers and even government officials (Governor Cuomo is a follower), who have all taken to social media to show support. Their goal is to help improve conditions not only in nail salons, but in the beauty industry as a whole.

handle with care

“I really hope that women will start thinking more about the social impact of the service industry in general,” Lord told The Huffington Post in an email, adding, “It upsets me that we let this slip and it took an article like this to bring it to light. But not every service industry will get an article like this, so what about them? What about those other cheap beauty treatments?”

Emergency measures have been taken by Cuomo to protect nail salon workers, and just this week hundreds of volunteers handed out fliers on the streets of New York informing both workers and customers of their rights.

But taking matters into your own hands has (literally) never been easier. Instagram users are encouraged to snap a photo of their nails using the hashtag #HandleWithCare to show support.

If nothing else, Lord’s efforts have opened up the conversation on a larger scale. “It’s been incredible, especially from members of the nail industry, many of whom said they’d been wanting to say something about it for so long and looking for a way to show their support,” she said.

Head to Handle With Care’s website to learn more, and if you see poor working conditions or any other violations, call the New York State Department of Labor at 1-888-469-7329.

First Freedom Tower Stair Race To Help Build 200 Homes For Vets With Disabilities

NEW YORK (AP) — The first stair-climb race at One World Trade Center — the nation’s tallest building — will raise money for military veterans struggling with combat-linked disabilities, two foundations formed after the 9/11 attacks announced Monday.

Officials of the Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation and the Captain Billy Burke Foundation detailed plans for the athletic event at Burke’s firehouse, Engine Company 21 in midtown Manhattan. Burke lost his life on 9/11 along with Firefighter Stephen Siller from Squad 1 in Park Slope, Brooklyn.

Proceeds from the May 17 tower climb will support service members who’ve been catastrophically injured in war and help educate children who’ve lost a parent. The money also will help build 200 new homes for veterans with the worst disabilities, mostly triple or quadruple amputees. About 40 houses have been completed.

On Sept. 11, 2001, Siller was off-duty when he ran with over 60 pounds of gear through the blocked-off Brooklyn Battery Tunnel to the World Trade Center. “Our foundation couldn’t be more honored to be chosen to hold the first stair-climb event at One World Trade Center,” said his brother Frank Siller, foundation chairman and CEO.

There’s also a “virtual stair climb” — using elevators — for people who want to participate but are unable to handle the stairs.

Participation is limited to the first 1,000 people who register by May 10. They’ll all wear computerized chips that will record their finish time. The entry fee is $ 100, and there’s a $ 250 minimum fundraising requirement.

Sept. 11 first responders will lead the way into the building for the climb, which is to the 90th floor — 180 flights of stairs — of the 104-story building.

Burke led firefighters on the day two terrorist-hijacked planes pierced the twin towers.

His brother, Michael Burke, said Monday that even though Billy knew that the south tower had already fallen, he chose to remain behind to rescue two workers, one in a wheelchair.

When the captain was urged to leave, he responded, “‘this is my job, this is who I am.’ Then he went on and the tower collapsed,” said Burke, who stopped talking several times, his voice breaking.

“What he did that day should be inspiration for us to keep going,” the foundation board member said.

In May, as climbers reach the higher floors and their knees and backs “are killing them,” he said, “just think of the words of Captain William Burke to his men: ‘keep going, I’m right behind you.'”
