With scores of designers in need of financial assistance due to the coronavirus shutdown, Harlem’s Fashion Row is planning to launch a nonprofit titled Icon360.
The kickoff “virtual fundraiser” event is set for May 30 and aims to raise funds for designers of color. Candidates will be able to apply for Icon360 grants starting June 15.
The online event will feature an assortment of speakers, including designers Christopher John Rogers and Tracy Reese, as well as stylist Kesha McLeod and the National Basketball Association’s senior vice president of diversity and inclusion Liliahn Majeed. Rogers won the grand prize at last year’s CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund. With more than 30 years of experience in the fashion industry, Reese has become increasingly focused on eco-friendly practices and sustainable option.
The virtual happening will include the option of viewing a fashion show with previous HFR designers and up-and-coming ones.
All tickets sales will benefit Icon360. Nike, Gap, Shea Moisture and Diageo are supporting the inaugural event.
By establishing the nonprofit, Harlem’s Fashion Row is aiming to provide forgivable relief to designers of color, who are pivoting their businesses and need funding to scale up. Established in 2007 by Brandice Daniel, Harlem’s Front Row supports young talent and offers a

Victoria’s Secret is planning its resurgence–and its comeback plan appears to hinge on Asia, and one very top of the A-list Chinese celebrity.
The lingerie retailer got a big, buzzy boost when it announced Thursday it had appointed Yang Mi, one of the most successful and highest-paid Chinese actresses as Asia ambassador of the brand.
“I am very pleased to be able to work with Victoria’s Secret,” said Yang. “Through a completely new interpretation, I want to make sexiness a natural expression in life, and it to become a more positive and beneficial force.”
The high-profile partnership with Yang comes even as Sycamore Partners, which sought to buy the struggling lingerie retailer before the coronavirus began spreading around the globe, tries to back out from the deal.
Yang Mi is the new face of Victoria’s Secret in Asia
Her appointment comes only three days after the brand tapped Zhou Dongyu, an acclaimed ingenue as the new face of Victoria’s Secret in China. Yang’s title suggests that her images will be rolled out beyond China to the rest of Asia. Some of her TV dramas are highly popular in Southeast Asia, South Korea and Japan.

As the coronavirus pandemic continues its severe global impact, a number of charities have launched or optimized their efforts to provide relief from the crisis.
Many of today’s biggest celebrities joined the fight to combat the COVID-19 pandemic early on, including the likes of Rihanna, Blake Lively, Selena Gomez, Kylie Jenner and Lady Gaga, who raised over $ 35 million for the World Health Organization’s COVID-19 Solidarity Response Fund.
Major fashion and beauty brands have followed suit, making donations to charities that offer a range of services, including providing essential medical equipment, meals to those in need, books to children and other support in fighting the pandemic.
Here, WWD rounds up a number of global charities across health care, food and other resources to donate to that provide relief from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Everybody knows Levi’s. It’s one of the most well-known brands in the world. But when most people think of Levi’s, they tend to think of jeans. And for good reason, as Levi’s does make amazing jeans. But Levi gets into other areas of fashion as well, and all of those items are pretty great too.
Levi’s makes some great stuff, and its gear is even better when it’s a collaboration with one of our other favorite brands, Outerknown. It is a team-up that has made some truly amazing items, sure to only grow over time.
This collaboration is off to a great start. Looking at what’s available, it is clear that these items are made for casual wear. But casual doesn’t have to mean unappealing. But what makes this collaboration great is that these two teams are trying to make the world a better place. Making fashion can leave a big footprint on the world but with these items, the footprint is going to be decreased exponentially. So you can look good while also feeling good at helping the environment in whatever way you can. No beating that.
For any guy looking to add some new great items into the fall wardrobe, check out the great items below.
HIT THE LIGHTS: The Kim Kardashian-Kanye West combo will be upping the wattage at the Fashion Group International’s upcoming Night of Stars. The Wests will hand over the Superstar award to Rick Owens at the Oct. 24 gala.
Like his wife, the 21-time Grammy winner West is no stranger to Owens. When the rapper-producer-designer first teamed up with Adidas, Owens was already an established collaborator with the brand, although he has since parted ways with it. Kardashian West, meanwhile, is clearly a fan, having worn a two-piece Rick Owens ensemble to accept her Influencer award at last year’s CFDA Awards.
Other presenters will include actress and activist Laverne Cox, who will present the “Trailblazer” award to Iman; Harold Koda, the former leader of the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute, will honor Ralph Rucci with the Fashion Legend award; supermodel and Every Mother Counts founder Christy Turlington will give Donna Karan the Humanitarian award, and Martha Stewart will honor Interior Design winner Delphine Krakoff.
In addition to serving as co-chair with the International Fashion Syndicate’s Marylou Luther, Elle’s editor in chief Nina Garcia will present the Fashion Star award to Brandon Maxwell. Garcia and the New York designer are familiar faces on Bravo’s
Boots and sneakers can leave feet looking, well, a little rough. If you’re contending with dry, flaky skin and deep calluses, there are quick and easy ways to condition your feet and so they’re healthy and looking their best. Put simply, you need a tool to help you exfoliate the skin, and something to moisturize your feet. Here are the best callus products to get them close-up ready.
First, use a pumice stone or callus file to gradually smooth down thick and rough areas. Skip the metal-toothed tools as they often cut too deep into the foot, says Alan Bass, a podiatrist in Manalapan, New Jersey. But don’t go nuts: Leave some callus behind, since they help protect against blisters while running.
To smooth out rough spots, we like the Gehwol Wooden Pedicure File.
So you’re losing your hair and want to salvage whatever you can without a transplant. You’ve heard of the pills (finasteride), and you’ve heard of the potion (minoxidil). Talk to your doctor about both, since they can be used together to halt hair-compromising hormones and improve nutrient delivery to the scalp. But also ask your dermatologist about the third hair-growth solution, which rounds out this full-force trifecta. It’s a relatively new option, and is flowing through your veins as we speak: It’s the plasma in your blood. I tried PRP injections (platelet-rich plasma), and can vouch for it.
I can accept that my hair will turn gray and the crow’s feet around my eyes will get more and more prominent with time. I understand that aging is going to take its toll on me. However, I’ve long put up a fight and am proactive against aging skin. I was slower to start with hair loss, though, mostly because I was in denial that my thick mane would ever compromise.
It started with a recession in my mid-20s, then seemed to stop by 28. I thought “this is fine” and went on without any action. The general thinning took over from there, hitting hard around 31. (This timing and rollout is different for all men.) By many standards, I still had a lot of hair. But by my standards, I had about half the hair on my crown that I used to, maybe less. I needed to accept this was happening, and I needed to do something about it if I wanted to keep my hair. (Because once a follicle stops growing hair, you only have a year or less to restore it before it’s totally dried up and irreversible.) I knew I couldn’t revive the hair that had receded, since those tend to be gone forever, but I could resuscitate much of the hair that had thinned out in previous years.
So, I went to my trusted doctor, NYC-based cosmetic dermatologist Michele Green. She recommended I try all three methods. I started finasteride in October of last year, the same time I started my first of three rounds of PRP, platelet-rich plasma. (I also began minoxidil in January of this year.) These dates are important for the before and after photos you’ll see during my PRP sessions. The results are not influenced by minoxidil, which increases blood and nutrient delivery to the hair follicles, in turn strengthening and thickening them. My photos are also not influenced by finasteride, either, since it takes 3 months to quell hormones and regrow any dormant follicles.
What Does PRP Entail?
PRP is pretty straightforward, albeit a little strange. The doctor withdraws blood, then spins it into a centrifuge to extract all the red blood cells, leaving your plasma behind. It’s thick and off-white and gooey. Then, they put this into syringes and shoot the plasma into your scalp, massaging it in like botox. This hurts a tiny bit, but quickly turns into a numb sort of contact high that wanes over the next couple days. You simply avoid alcohol and painkillers—anything that thins the blood—for a few days.
I’ll let the medical professional explain this one: “PRP stimulates the hair by injecting specific growth factors that are derived from your own blood to regenerate and grow hair,” says Green. “PRP contains special cells called platelets, which can theoretically cause growth of the hair follicles by stimulating the stem cells and other cells around the hair follicle. This platelet-rich plasma promotes healing, accelerates the rate and degree of tissue healing and regeneration, and promotes new cellular growth. It stimulates the hair follicles to grow and cause both the growth of new hair and the thickening of existing hairs.” In short, it does the work of both finasteride and minoxidil, or bolsters their efforts.
If you want the specifics on the growth factors that PRP cells have, here they are: platelet-derived growth factor, transforming growth-factor-beta, vascular epithelial growth factor, epidermal growth factor, and fibroblast growth factor. “Human blood contains mesenchymal stem cells and autologous blood products contain this myriad of growth factors that assist in tissue regeneration and healing,” Green says.
Who’s a Good Candidate for PRP?
Green says you’re a prime PRP candidate if you have early-onset hair loss and want to prevent future hair loss. If you’re already bald or are hoping to treat an area that has no hair follicles, then PRP is not going to help. It can only restore and strengthen active follicles.
Can PRP Be Done in Place of Finasteride and Minoxidil?
Yes, it’s a good holistic approach for someone who doesn’t want to take medication for hair loss, and there are no side effects to putting your own plasma back into your body. However, you will need to keep getting PRP treatments yearly (or more frequently) since you aren’t supplementing the efforts with pills and drops.
How Many PRP Treatments Are Necessary, and How Often? What’s a Good Long-Term PRP “Plan”?
“The plan usually is four treatments of PRP for my patients, one month apart, and then an assessment three months later to see the success of my treatment plan,” says Green. “We take before and after photographs to judge the effects of the hair growth. We then assess the maintenance of the PRP injections which can vary between three or more months.” Some patients will “top off” once a year, while others will come in quarterly. It’s up to personal preference, and sometimes budget.
How Expensive Is PRP?
The costs vary wildly, based on the experience your doctor has, and the equipment they’re using. You should expect each treatment to land in the $ 800-1,500 range, however. (Yes, it’s pricy.) Hopefully, as the treatment becomes more prominent and accessible, this price will go down.
My PRP Results
Given all you know about my hair-loss timeline, and my PRP timeline, here are some before, during, and after photos that map my own success with plasma.
Before: The first is before my initial treatment, in early October. (Forgive the fact my hair is different colors in each photo, since I’d dyed it blonde just before.) Note the significant thinning around my cowlick, which is representative of the hair atop my crown overall. This is also when I began taking finasteride.
During—3 Months Later: This was taken just before my third round of PRP, in late December. Note the fuller crown. Because my hair is shorter, it stands up a bit more than the separating effects of longer hair, but you can still see how much fuller it is overall. By this point, I could run my hand through my hair and feel it was much thicker, too—probably 50 percent fuller than just months before. The finasteride regrowth would not have fully kicked in yet, and I would start minoxidil a week or two later.
After—6 Months Later: I’m back to my natural brown hair, but more importantly, I’ve got fuller hair all around the crown. You can see the thickness in the cowlick (don’t just give it a passing glance; if you study it, you see it). And, when I run my hand through my hair, it feels as full as it was five years ago, before I had any real qualms about hair loss. It stands up when I texturize or volumize it, and I notice far fewer hairs in my sink—just the ones that naturally fall out and quickly regenerate. This was a combination of all three methods—finasteride, minoxidil, and PRP—though you can study photo two for the benefits of PRP itself.

With a bust size of 34S, Stephanie Nelson knows a little bit about the struggles of finding a bra that fits and supports her situation properly. Ms. Nelson has launched a $ 100,000 GoFundMeeffort to support other women in the journey of locating bras that both look and feel good in an overall bid to promote breast health.
Some readers might remember Nelson as one of our Baes and Baddies entries under the name persephanii, and as we noted then, her curvaceous frame is without a doubt a head-turner. However, she’s noticed the plight of women of her busty ilk in noting that many of them are wearing ill-fitting bras and how that could be contributing to their back pain and the like.
I am a size 34S and I have no pain associated with my back and shoulders from having large breasts! It was not always like that. I wore poor suppprting bras thatugged on my back and shoulders to the point of me considering having a breast reduction.
Breast health is extremely important. Finding the right size is even more important. Many women walk around with pain in their back, shoulder and chest because they cannot find the right size. As a breast healthy woman I fear there could be a correlation to breast diseases and wearing poor supporting bras. I would like to raise money to not only purchase new bras for myself but also do give aways and events and help other women with large breasts find bras that fit well, improve their posture and help get rid of pain.
With all of that being said. BRA’S are expensive. Please donate if you’d love to see a reduction in pain and more confident breast healthy women near you!
Nelson kept it a stack in saying she wants to cop new wears for herself, but the larger goal of helping others is really the best part in all of this. Salute to her.

Urban One has launched the Represent Men’s Health initiative with the aim of raising awareness of how Black men are focusing on their minds and bodies to remain their healthiest. This week, the focus is squarely on prostate cancer, a deadly condition that, with diet changes along with routine screening, can be detected and contained and this cooking tip from Atlanta’s Chef Jernard Wells can aid in that journey.
Black men are 1.6 times more likely to receive a prostate cancer diagnosis and are twice as likely to die from it as noted by the Prostate Cancer Foundation. With regular exercise, scheduled doctors visits, changing our eating habits, and a proper screening, we can all “Represent Men’s Health” by lowering those numbers.
Take a look at how you can plan a healthy meal that helps to prevent prostate cancer with Chef Jernard Wells.

Dry shampooâs main function is soaking up oil and grease, making it a must when thereâs no time for a proper shower. But it holds a styling secret, too. âDry shampoo helps conceal dirty hair while giving the appearance of more volume,â says Jordan Blackmore, co-founder of S.Oil and Three Squares Studio in New York City. Dry shampooâs plumping effect makes the stuff perfect for guys with thinning or fine hair, Blackmore says. âIf you use a blow-dryer first, you can achieve the appearance of even more thickness,â Blackmore adds. Use somewhat sparingly, however; experts say you should still lather up about four times a week for hair and scalp health.

School-age children ages 6 through 12 can be highly impacted by divorce. Children of this age group are trying to integrate their parents’ separation. This can be only done in relation to their own stage of development. It is most important at this time that you do not speak negatively about your ex-spouse. That can only serve to confront your child’s own sense of self and identity. The better you and your ex can get along after divorce, the easier it is for your children to adjust.
You can help minimize the negative effects of divorce on children in this age group by working together, as a team, on the following:
Ensure a stable and consistent visitation schedule. This gives your child a structure that can create security.
Do not create conflict during visitation exchanges.
Do not burden your children with your own emotional problems. If necessary, see a counselor, but don’t stress your child.
Maintain communication with teachers and school personnel. Partner with your child’s school counselor and teachers by letting them know what is happening. This way, they can help keep an eye out for, and alert you to, unusual behavior, such as missing schoolwork, not paying attention in class or aggressive behavior.
Know your child’s history. If your child has problems with stress, it will be more difficult for him to adapt to separation. This child needs good parenting from both parents, which includes safety, love, nurturing, meeting needs and understanding.
Age-appropriate communication is paramount. Be open with your child and answer his questions with as much gentle honesty as you can. However, don’t put your child in a loyalty double-bind, and don’t question him about your ex.
Allow your children to have a voice in the day-to-day decisions. This can include helping to decide on the new sleeping arrangements, home décor such as sheets, blankets, pillows and bedspreads and where to go on Spring Break. This also means allowing your children to have a voice in creating new family traditions. When parents divorce, children often feel out of control because they didn’t have a say or any options in the decision to divorce. These small experiences of choice help your children feel invested in their new family.
Finally, use my Empathic Process. The Empathic Process is an approach I developed for parents and children to communicate in a safe and open space. It teaches children how to talk to their parents about their feelings, while parents actively listen without defense. Then parents get a chance to speak. Ultimately, parents and children speak together solving their problem, by investing each participant in the solution. This undefended experience creates a safe space in which parent and child can return when needed.

I’m writing on behalf of Americans for a Brighter Tomorrow to join us in boycotting the upcoming Vernal Equinox. Though seemingly innocuous, the Vernal Equinox is in fact a pseudo-scientific assault upon the work of our benefactor, the brilliant Dr. Clandestino. Rather than celebrate this Stone Age impediment to progress, we urge you to recognize it for what it is: an end-run effort to undermine Dr. Clandestino’s bold plan to blow up the sun.
Frankly, the sun has had it too good for too long — thanks in large part to corrupt scientists and beachgoers and plants, all pushing their radical pro-sun agenda. But that doesn’t change the facts at hand:
Fact: We already know what it’s like to live without the sun. It’s called nighttime. To quote the hyperbolic sun worshippers, does “life as we know it…cease to exist” at night? No. No it does not.
Fact: With the sun out of the picture, America’s coal, oil, natural gas and peat moss industries stand to double their profits AT LEAST. Talk about job creation!
Fact: Freedom from the sun’s loathsome rays and the prying eyes that accompany them will allow our misunderstood geniuses to perform their delicate, unspeakable experiments in peace and quiet, at long last.
Fact: The sun is a fiery demon incessantly mocking us, smug in its unearned position of prominence, silently hounding us to the very ends of sanity.
Clearly, the sun has to go.
Acknowledge these self-evident truths, though, and what happens? People call you insane. Insane! An outrageous accusation, were it not so absurd. After all, could an insane person develop and perfect the technology to induce a yellow dwarf star to go supernova? Could an insane person successfully corner the world’s coal, oil, natural gas and peat moss markets? Could an insane person create a front organization that affords him access to the highest levels of power? WE’LL SHOW THEM WHO’S INSANE!
And we need your help. The $ 18 trillion Dr. Clandestino stands ready to spend in the next election cycle can’t do the work on its own; we also need duly elected legislative representatives — like you — who have the courage to turn that money into Congressional votes.
Boycotting the Vernal Equinox is only the first step. Here are some other ways you can work to advance our important cause:
Defund NASA, the Department of Defense, and anyone else meddlesome enough to stand in our way
Abolish the “Death Ray Tax”
Privatize the Yellowstone Caldera, making its vast magma reserves available for development by the nation’s death ray companies
Cut the capital gains tax
Provide more higher education funding for the Mad Sciences
And, of course, encourage you constituents to get out and volunteer. A project of this urgency and magnitude can only be achieved via the selfless toil of thousands of faceless minions, channeling searing rivers of lava into a dread engine mighty enough to fatally pierce the heart of our solar nemesis.
In the words of Dr. Clandestino,

“People ask me all time, George, how do I get my idea in front of companies… call my friends at Invent Help.”
It would be fun to find out how much George Foreman earns for these outbursts. But what’s even more interesting is the question of how many people there are out there to justify the existence of a company like Invent Help? Hundreds, thousands, millions? How many undiscovered Thomas Edisons are there? How many Alexander Graham Bells are iterating the latter day equivalent of “Mr. Watson — come here — I want to see you.”
OK not everyone is going to invent the light bulb or the telephone. Not everyone is going to experiment with electricity like Ben Franklin did in his famous kite experiment. Many of the big discoveries — for example, quanta and the Higgs boson — either have been or are in the process of being made. NASA is already planning for a journey to Mars. What type of ideas is George talking about and what are the kinds of things that his friends at Invent Help ending up having to vet.
For instance has anyone come up with a gadget that will enable you to unravel a new roll of toilet paper in the middle of the night? You know how irritating it is when your hand circles round and round and can’t find that first piece and finally how badly you feel when you decide to simply rip through several layers to start the ball rolling, as it were? How about an alarm which goes off when you don’t put your keys where they belong — so you don’t have to be late for work when you’re trying to find them? How about a “restaurant mediator” that takes the decision making out of restaurant going? Does your Saturday night on the town become a test of wills between you and your wife, with someone always getting the bottom end of the stick? This new patent will improve your marriage and enable you to blame a bad meal on a device rather than a person. OK and digging down deep what about some modern inventions that have the global implications of electricity or the telephone? How about a pocket nuclear Armageddon detector? Or a peace monger, an innocuous little antenna like device that’s already brought about peace between seemingly intractable adversaries. What about the polar ice cap capper? Or the 3-D crapper? If you have any ideas like this, call George Foreman’s friends at Invent Help.
