IBA’s Summer Learning Project is a 5-week, project-based enrichment program that aims to reverse summer learning loss, develop language and literacy, and support social and emotional development in 2nd and 3rd grade students. Now in its fifth year of programming offered through a partnership with Boston After School & Beyond and Boston Public School’s Office of English Language Learners, IBA’s Summer Learning Project welcomed 40 students from schools throughout Boston to the Blackstone Innovation School, where students explored the the essential question, “What is Community?” Inspired by a reading of the book Superdog: The Heart of a Hero by Carlyn Buehner at the South End Branch of the Boston Public Library, students wanted to learn more about the heroes in their own community, as well as how they too could be heroes. in this book, you will find research by the amazing 2nd and 3rd grade heroes at IBA on what, who, and where heroes are—as well as how you can be a hero, too! The program included rigorous academic instruction, but it also provided students with a new lens through which to observe the world around them. This book was accepted into the Boston Public Library’s permanent collection on August 7, 2015 and will serve as a resource for young explorers for years to come. Knowledge@Wharton, University of Pennsylvania's online business journal, calls San Diego Comic-Con the “Super Bowl of pop culture”. The convention is the required pilgrimage for artists, actors, filmmakers, producers or screenwriters. Each year 130,000 fans gather, and where they go Hollywood follows. News coverage weighs heavily to celebrities, even though they are outnumbered thousands to one. The real stars aren’t the big-screen actors and showrunners but the small, bit-players roaming the halls; the attendees, whether they dress up in costumes or simply participate in any of the hundreds of panel sessions. From its early comic-book beginnings in the 1970s until today, the Con is all about superheroes and whom fans aspire to be: Better versions of themselves. One attendee calls Comic-Con “nerd paradise”, where for a few days oddball dreamers, crazy lovers of fantastic stories and ardent superhero fans can be free; the social rules constraining them everyday no longer apply. Everyone here has a story to tell, and “Comic-Con Heroes” tells them. Writer Joe Wilcox culminates five years of Cons by choosing a dozen attendees from the 2013 convention to profile. None is a celebrity you know, but each is a hero in the making. You will meet an archaeologist of toys, 14-Century knight and student of artificial intelligence. You will walk The Dark Knight’s sentimental journey, ride 19th-Century bicycles and time travel with Dr. Who. And you will learn that the best stories aren’t the ones we read or watch but those we live each day that seek to unleash the hidden hero within. This book entered the public domain on July 8, 2015.

At the heart of the Apollo space program and a remarkable decade of achievement was the team who worked in Mission Control. They were born against a backdrop of economic turmoil and global conflict. Some came from a rural lifestyle little changed from the 19th century. Others grew up in a gritty, blue-collar America of mines and smoke stacks. They ranged from kids straight out of college to those toughened by military service. But from such ordinary beginnings, an extraordinary team was born. They were setting out on what JFK called: “The most hazardous, dangerous, and greatest adventure upon which mankind has ever embarked” and through their testimony – and the supporting voices of Apollo astronauts and modern NASA flight directors – the film takes us from the faltering start of the program through the Mercury and Gemini missions, the tragedy of the Apollo 1 fire to the glories of the Moon landings.

Super Heroes

Betty’s cousin had two of her grandsons overnight on Halloween night. The next morning when they got up, the boys put their costumes back on. One was
Superman and one was Ironman.

Their grandma told them they had to help fold laundry and then they would go do something fun.

After a few minutes “Superman” said, “I don’t have time to fold laundry. I should be out saving the world!”

Worth The Wait: Thanos & Earth’s Mightiest Heroes Deliver In ‘Avengers: Infinity War’

Avengers: Infinity War

Source: Marvel Studios/Disney / Marvel Studios/ Disney

It took 10 years but Thanos has finally arrived to deliver our favorite superheroes the fade. Anxiety levels have been on high for Marvel fans as they wondered for years about this film and if directing duo of Anthony Russo and Joe Russo could deliver the goods. We are happy to report they did and then some.

Avengers: Infinity War is as epic as predicted and what would you expect from a movie featuring all of Marvel Studios titular characters. To bring everyone up to speed quickly, Infinity War is a culmination of all of the Marvel Studios films leading up to the epic showdown with the Mad Titan aka Thanos and his quest for the precious and powerful Infinity Stones. There is no need for character building in this film because fans already know what is at stake and are well acquainted with all of the players except one…Thanos and his loyal and very dangerous disciples.

With everything already set up, it allows the Russo Brothers to jump into the story immediately and pick right up where Thor: Ragnarok left off. A movie as massive as Avengers: Infinity War could be confusing as there are so many stories to be told due to the fact there are so many dynamic characters.  They masterfully find a way to keep your interests peaked in each character’s quest as they all lead to the climactic showdown with the feared Marvel villain.

Avengers: Infinity War

Source: Marvel/Disney / Marvel/Disney

Each character from Iron Man (Robert Downy Jr.), Thor (Chris Hemsworth) Captain America (Chris Evans), Black Panther (Chadwick Boseman) down to Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen)  has their moment to shine as well some more than others but not one of them wasted their on-screen opportunity to wow moviegoers. Their on-screen chemistry was also on point helping to deliver well-timed comedic moments that worked every time in spite of the disastrous circumstances around them. BUT it’s the sense of fear all of the heroes convey that we have not seen from them as they learn that this battle is has more dire consequences than any other they have been a part of. The Russo Brothers manage to have this same fear rub off on the viewer. But honestly the star of this movie wasn’t the Earth’s mightiest heroes, it was the universes greatest threat.

Josh Brolin is masterful as Thanos who after this film an argument could be made easily that he is one of, if not THE greatest MCU villains ever. Move over Killmonger, Loki, and Hela.  Brolin’s voice gives the CGI enhanced character much-needed life as there are moments viewers can honestly feel some form of empathy for the villain on his conquest to vanquish everyone. There were even times when Thanos was just as much sad as he was hell-bent on wiping out everyone with the snap of his fingers.

Avengers: Infinity War manages to carry on the consequential feeling that Ryan Coogler did for Black Panther so effortlessly. The 2h 40m epic is exhausting and that is by no means a bad thing cause it takes on you on an emotional rollercoaster. It’s the films climatic battle in the beautiful fictional world of Wakanda that will leave you speechless. Once the film ended there was a wave of silence that I could honestly say as avid Marvel movie watcher I never seen or experienced before. This isn’t just a colorful comic book movie this is an experience and it will require a lot of processing after viewing. Make no mistake Avengers: Infinity War was worth the 10-year wait and is the Avengers movie fans have been clamoring for. Hell, some fan reactions that hit Twitter last night can attest to that.

Avengers: Infinity War Okoye & T'Challa

Source: Marvel/Disney / Marvel/Disney

Where the movie belongs in the pantheon of Marvel’s cinematic gems is on the viewer but that distinction is based solely on the viewer. There is no doubt this film deserves to be in the question when it comes to which one of the films were the greatest without a doubt.

Oh don’t be that person and leave when the movie is over, you will be rewarded for sitting through those credits.

Final Verdict: Masterful

“THE SORCERER’S RING has all the ingredients for an instant success: plots, counterplots, mystery, valiant knights, and blossoming relationships replete with broken hearts, deception and betrayal. It will keep you entertained for hours, and will satisfy all ages. Recommended for the permanent library of all fantasy readers.”  –Books and Movie Reviews, Roberto Mattos  Here is episode #1 in the graphic novel adaptation of the #1 Bestselling epic fantasy novel A QUEST OF HEROES, with over 900 five star reviews!  From #1 Bestselling author Morgan Rice comes the debut of a dazzling new fantasy series. A QUEST OF HEROES (BOOK #1 IN THE SORCERER’S RING) revolves around the epic coming of age story of one special boy, a 14 year old from a small village on the outskirts of the Kingdom of the Ring. The youngest of four, the least favorite of his father, hated by his brothers, Thorgrin senses he is different from the others. He dreams of becoming a great warrior, of joining the King’s men and protecting the Ring from the hordes of creatures on the other side of the Canyon. When he comes of age and is forbidden by his father to try out for the King’s Legion, he refuses to take no for an answer: he journeys out on his own, determined to force his way into King’s Court and be taken seriously.  But King’s Court is rife with its own family dramas, power struggles, ambitions, jealousy, violence and betrayal. King MacGil must choose an heir from amongst his children, and the ancient Dynasty Sword, the source of all their power, still sits untouched, waiting for the chosen one to arrive. Thorgrin arrives as an outsider and battles to be accepted, and to join the King’s Legion.  Thorgrin comes to learn he has mysterious powers he does not understand, that he has a special gift, and a special destiny. Against all odds he falls in love with the king’s daughter, and as their forbidden relationship blossoms, he discovers he has powerful rivals. As he struggles to make sense of his powers, the king’s sorcerer takes him under his wing and tells him of a mother he never knew, in a land far away, beyond the Canyon, beyond even the land of the Dragons.  Before Thorgrin can venture out and become the warrior he yearns to be, he must complete his training. But this may be cut short, as he finds himself propelled into the center of royal plots and counterplots, ones that may threaten his love and bring him down—and the entire kingdom with him.  With its sophisticated world-building and characterization, A QUEST OF HEROES is an epic tale of friends and lovers, of rivals and suitors, of knights and dragons, of intrigues and political machinations, of coming of age, of broken hearts, of deception, ambition and betrayal. It is a tale of honor and courage, of fate and destiny, of sorcery. It is a fantasy that brings us into a world we will never forget, and which will appeal to all ages and genders. “[An] entertaining epic fantasy.”  —Kirkus Reviews  “The beginnings of something remarkable are there.”  –San Francisco Book Review  “A spirited fantasy ….Only the beginning of what promises to be an epic young adult series.”  –Midwest Book Review

The Blacksmith and The Apprentice: Adventures in Minecraft!

Stone Marshall

Genre: Graphic Novels

Publish Date: June 1, 2015

Publisher: Stone Marshall Studio

Seller: Nathan Lawrence

Ever wonder what life is like for villagers and creatures in Minecraft? Read Legends and Heroes and find out! Created by Stone Marshall, the author of the best selling Flynn’s Log series. The ancient art of blacksmithing is a thing of beauty. A lot of hard work goes into the process. It’s very complicated, really. Stoking the flames to many small, contained fires—making lumps of metal into differently shaped items of metal—hitting said lumps of metal with hammers to turn them into different weapons. You can shape metals into whatever item you want. Okay, it might not be a very interesting job, but apprenticing with the best blacksmith in the kingdom is a huge opportunity. Blacksmiths make the tools everyone needs to get about in their day-to-day lives. It’s a very prestigious and impressive position, although this honor is lost when the position is held by Dane, a youthful boy who dreams of greater adventure! Luckily, Dane has a skilled master to reign in his daydreaming. Viegar has quite an interesting past. From his years on the Royal Guard to his close relationship with the previous king, he’s quite a friend to have on your side. There is one other apprentice, Snip, who is much more passionate about his duties than Dane. Between the three of them, they churn out powerful weapons and protective armor, usually with no thanks to Dane. Of course, no cast of characters would be complete without the big man in charge—in this case, a king. By almost anyone’s account, he’s a good and fair ruler, but there is no one in power without enemies. Though Viegar and his workers only want to help their wonderful king, there are still plenty who wish to do him harm. But Dane can only imagine such things. It’s not as if he’d ever be in the position to really make any sort of difference or be in any place of power. Right? And though his apprenticeship is mundane and boring, the young man gets a few moments of excitement. Every once in a while, his master Viegar lets him venture out past the village to visit the caravan, where he can trade and buy supplies. It’s the most excitement Dane ever gets in his line of work. Sometimes, he gets to meet interesting people. Sometimes, he hears interesting things. And maybe, just maybe, he sometimes hears of a new opportunity for himself. But who would want to give up such a life as an esteemed apprentice? But of course, destiny and desire are not always what you expect . . .

The Real ‘Gay Heroes’

Supportive sentiments filled my inbox after I publicly came out in my university’s student-run newspaper. But despite this outpour of positivity, I was still completely unprepared when The Advocate republished my article and changed my title to include the phrase “gay hero.” I felt like an impostor. I had been publicly out for less than a week — how could I possibly already be a “gay hero”?

As this question played persistently like background music in my head, I absentmindedly opened my inbox. To my surprise, an email from an LGBTQ asylum seeker requesting assistance stared back at me. He asked questions, but he also answered mine.

Tom* is a hopeful LGBTQ asylum seeker from Jamaica. In Jamaica, sexual activity between men is punishable by up to 10 years of imprisonment and hard labor. Openly gay people are ostracized, beaten and even murdered. For Tom, coming out would most likely be met with ridicule and death threats — not words of encouragement and support.

2015-05-28-1432782930-6691855-Tom.jpg

Tom allowed me to read his story in his own words. His narrative about growing up as a gay man in Jamaica is worth sharing.

Being Gay in Jamaica means you are a second class citizen or not a citizen at all since you are not afforded the protection of the government because of your sexuality, there are no “if” “or” “ands” about it. It’s a society that is built on the belief that if you don’t assimilate yourself with what is considered right by the bible, you really don’t belong here.

The majority of Jamaicans have made it clear, they don’t want homosexuals in the country, they don’t want their western values there and they don’t want to beholden to foreign aide at the cost of reducing their homophobic beliefs.

For 31 years, fear of physical harm, shame and threat of rejection by family and society dictated Tom’s life. This paralyzing fear locked Tom, terrified and ashamed, soundly in the closet. The nationwide homophobia seeped into Tom’s family life, soon infiltrating his own self worth.

I remember one evening my mother and I were in the living room watching music videos and they showed a George Michael video, “Careless Whisper.” My father came in the room and saw what was on. He immediately said, “Change the channel, I don’t want to see that faggot!”

My mother sat there laughing, I had to pretend like I was sleeping or didn’t hear. This was just one of many such rants against homosexuals in the house. Growing up, gay people were often ridiculed and were the butt of jokes in my family. In fact, if you really want to disrespect someone just call them “batty man” or “homo.”

At a young age and obviously coming to terms with being gay made it hard for me and in some ways I started getting angry about it. I knew I could not say anything about it at the time because of the fear I had developed. I knew that if my parents or brothers found out I was gay it would have been beating from my father, ridicule from my mother and further disgust and beatings from my brothers. So from then on, I vowed to keep this a secret for the rest of my life. It was a tough decision, but I didn’t know how much it would have an impact on my life and how I would handle my sexuality later in life.

Tom realized he was gay at the age of five and he has desperately craved the freedom to live authentically ever since. Time has only intensified this desire.

In September of 2013 I reached the age of 30 and it came with more feelings of depression and loneliness. I looked back on my life and only saw something that was defined by what society expected. A recluse in my own body and sexuality, someone who was to be kept in silence about who I truly was, a homosexual man with no feelings, just a specific purpose of working a 9 to 5 job, go home, have something to eat, go to bed, wake up the next day and continue on a monotonous journey in life. Yet, you are threatened because you don’t have a girlfriend, not only by strangers in your workplace, but your very own family and community.

Unwilling to succumb to the rigid expectations of his home country, Tom sought an escape.

My plan to leave Jamaica came into existence around early September 2013. I just made up my mind one night lying in bed; I got to get out of here. There must be an option for me to live a safer, open life abroad.

In August of 2014, Tom bravely resigned from his job to seek political asylum in the U.S. Unfortunately, the people in America who had promised to help Tom now attempted to prey on his vulnerability. Consequently, his first trip to the U.S. was stained with unwanted sexual advances and domestic violence. Out of options and facing homelessness, Tom was forced to return to Jamaica.

Despite these setbacks, Tom continues to refuse to fall victim to a country that will not accept him for who he is. He remains determined to sever ties with his present reality that is “complete loneliness and isolation.” To this end, Tom plans to make his second journey to the U.S. later this year in pursuit of a long overdue new beginning.

I am not a “gay hero.” Rather, I hope to be an advocate for “gay heroes” like Tom — those who courageously leave everything behind in pursuit of an authentic life. Facing discrimination and their own mortality, LGBTQ asylum seekers act with resilience, conviction and bravery. They act with heroism.

Moving forward, this blog will strive to document the stories of these underrepresented but very real heroes.

Divorcing Parents: 4 Ways You Can Be Super Heroes To Your Children

2015-03-06-1425663680-41506-bigstockauritsuperkids01.jpg

Divorcing parents: you can be super heroes to your children. Here’s the plot twist: becoming their super hero means accepting that your children deserve to experience both a “Super-Mom” and “Super-Dad.” Your marriage is ending, but your relationship as co-parents continues. Super hero status depends on whether you exercise your powers to communicate positively with your children about their other co-parent. They need your permission and encouragement, demonstrated by all of your words and actions, to enjoy their relationship with your ex-spouse and feel supported for doing so.

This may sound flat-out horrible to you! The worse it sounds, the more you probably need to hear it. Amidst the overwhelming challenges presented by your divorce, your first act of heroism is to begin thinking about one another as co-parents, and move away from “ex-talk.” Your number one priority now is to make the healthiest possible choices–big and small–for your kids. Please consider these four commitments you can make as co-parents that will change the course of your children’s lives and in the process, possibly save yours too.

1. Begin to access your super power–choose a healthier divorce.

The best decision divorcing spouses can make is choosing divorce mediation, instead of an ugly street fight in court. Most legal battles cause harm to your children. Litigation encourages spouses to become enemies. The increased intensity and duration of conflict can damage your child’s development and cause serious long-term problems. Consider how doubling-down on negative feelings about your spouse in a divorce war might affect your children, who need both of you as a source of love and stability in their lives, especially during a time of epic change.

In divorce mediation, you and your spouse together, with the help of a qualified neutral mediator, will address all of issues that a judge would decide: property and debt division, support issues and child custody (in mediation called a “parenting plan”). By avoiding court and engaging in respectful communication, you will stay in control of your own future and lower your family’s stress level. This is your first step–and an essential one–toward building a more peaceful co-parenting future and setting the stage to become super heroes to your children.

2. Be truthful–but tell them only what they need to know.

Child specialists agree that parents need to communicate honestly and in advance that the separation is happening, the reasons behind it, and what the future might look like for the family. While specific approaches vary depending on age, renowned child psychologist and pioneering custody mediator, Donald Saposnek, Ph.D., urges parents to agree upon a truthful, carefully framed “mutual story of the divorce.”

First, parents should tell their children together about the divorce. Children need to hear “one mutual and consistent story” about why and how the divorce will happen, according to Saposnek. Telling your children a “mutual story,” in which neither parent is “bad,” joint responsibility for the divorce is taken and personal details are spared, will help them view the divorce as a “family re-organization” rather than a “break-up.” It will allow them to bond with both of you within the re-organized family from the outset.

For example, instead of Mom telling the children that the divorce is a result of Dad’s cheating and lack of care for the family, and Dad telling the children that Mom has been mean to him for years, a “mutual story” would focus on how much Mom and Dad both love them. It would also express how they will always be safe and cared for, and that although this may be difficult for everyone for a time, everything will be okay.

“Mommy and Daddy tried as hard as they could to live happily together but we have grown-up problems that we just can’t fix, so we’ve both decided that we shouldn’t be married anymore. We will always love you and take good care of you and be your Mommy and Daddy. You need to know that our divorce is not your fault. You haven’t done anything wrong. We are both very proud of you. Even though Mom and Dad will live in two different houses, you will see us both and we will keep loving you, and taking care of you and will each have special time with you. We both agree that it is important for us not to fight anymore and that we will be happier living in separate places.”

The “tell them what they need to know” approach applies after your divorce too. Spare the details as questions may arise or bumps occur in your co-parenting relationship. Agree on how you may need to elaborate on the mutual story as time goes on.

3. Never argue with or criticize your co-parent in the presence of your children.

The true hero is a parent who prevents an argument from occurring in front of their children, not the parent who wins an argument. Never argue or fight with one another in front of your kids. It is a sin against their childhood. There is no excuse for it. So, learn to control yourself. Perhaps agree with your co-parent on a “code word” for when tense moments arise that signals: “we-both-need-to-STOP-NOW-because-continuing-will-permanently-damage-our-children.” Whatever it takes.

Speaking negatively about or criticizing your co-parent within earshot of your kids is equally harmful. Many child experts would call it “emotional child abuse.” When you attack your co-parent, you are also attacking your children. This makes sense because children view themselves as being a part of both of you. A condescending comment or a display of anger about your co-parent will cause unnatural stress on your children and can make them feel belittled and lower their self-esteem.

You are still entitled to your feelings and need to express them, but not to your children or anywhere near them. Beware: They can probably hear you talking on the phone in your house, or with a friend or relative while they sit in the backseat of your car.

4. Proactively support your children’s relationship with your co-parent.

In addition to shielding your children from negativity, by positively reinforcing your co-parent when communicating with your children, you will advance healthy child development. I’m not claiming that it will be easy! In order to “talk the positive talk” with your children, it helps to “walk the positive walk” with your co-parent.

First, get yourself in the right frame of mind. Keep reminding yourself that your goal as a parent is not to win a popularity contest. Even if it were, omitting opportunities to positively support your co-parent would not help you win one in the end. Understand that for a while you may need to just “go through the motions” of practicing positive communication.

Second, find consensus with your co-parent about fostering a supportive co-parenting relationship. Agree that your children have an absolute right to a positive and full relationship with both of you. Agree that you will both look for ways to support your children’s relationship with the other, regardless of your personal feelings at any given moment. Agree to continuously communicate with each other about child’s needs.

Building this foundation of mutual understanding may allow positive communications about your co-parent come more naturally. If you’ve undertaken divorce mediation with a sophisticated mediator, you’ll lay the groundwork there. Many co-parents also greatly benefit from the expert advice of a therapist or social worker, during or post-divorce, who specializes in healthy co-parenting.

And finally, just do it. Here are some tips.

1. Refer to one another “Mommy” and “Daddy” or “Mom and “Dad” rather than “your Mom/Mother” or “your Dad/Father.”

2. Sincerely encourage your children to call or FaceTime the other during your own parenting time.

3. Celebrate the time, activities, and fun moments your children had with your co-parent.

“I’m excited to hear what you and Daddy did this weekend! … Wow, you went to the train park–that must have been so fun.”

“Cool new backpack. Did Mommy get that for you? I love it.”

4. Have a photo–or a few–of your children with your co-parent in your home. It can be a reminder that you are both there for them, wherever they go. You can be clear that even though you and your co-parent are no longer married, you still respect one another as co-parents.

5. Make a list of ten positive memories or good characteristics of your co-parent. Share them, one by one, when the time is right. Repeat them too. You might tell the story of your co-parents’ reaction when your child was born, a time your co-parent did a good deed for someone else or share a talent that your co-parent possesses.

The most heroic gift you can give your children is taking every opportunity possible to speak positively about your co-parent. Divorce in itself will not likely damage your children. However, how you choose to get divorced and behave after your divorce will make the difference. Choose to be super heroes to your kids. In doing so, you may also discover that you are the greatest super hero to yourself.
