Bridget Foley’s Diary: Wes Gordon’s Early Impact at Herrera

A vibrant installation greeted visitors to the Carolina Herrera showroom, where last week Wes Gordon showed his resort collection for the brand. The clothes and potted flowering plants were bright and pretty, in keeping with the vision Gordon saw for the house when he first signed on as a consultant working under “Mrs. Herrera,” and with which he forged ahead upon taking full creative control after her retirement.
That Gordon has swiftly infused the collections with a younger, lighter aura is readily apparent, and we set a date to talk about his vision in greater detail. But when I arrive two days later for that chat, there are other topics to discuss first, like farming. Gordon and his husband Paul Arnhold, two citified guys hailing from Atlanta and Manhattan, respectively, own a place in Roxbury, Conn., “the gayest farm in the world.” (That’s Gordon’s distinction, as I am consummately unqualified to judge farming on any criteria.) He makes that statement after namechecking the farm’s two bunnies, Kate and Pippa. The dog, Birdie, thinks they’re her puppies. (Understandable confusion; all three are black and white.)
Gordon and Arnhold spend as many weekends at Thistledown Farm as possible, but not all weekends, and not

Carolina Herrera to Start Selling Bridal in London at Moda Operandi

For the first time, Carolina Herrera will be selling her wedding gowns in the U.K. through a new partnership with Moda Operandi.
From Nov. 25 to 28, a Carolina Herrera Bridal trunk show will be held at Moda Operandi’s London store in Belgravia. Shoppers will be the first to pre-order gowns from the fall 2016 collection. The alliance is in step with the American designer company’s focus on expanded global distribution. The three-day event will mark the first time Moda Operandi has gotten into bridal in such a major way.
Brides-to-be will find fluid silhouettes with embellished intricate lace scallop necklines and a bodice that appears to have a panted motif due to crystals and hand-placed lace on organza. Other styles feature chantilly and guipure lace appliqués on tulle, and sheer layers and pleats. For fall, there is also a palette of blush tones and nudes.
Since she launched her bridal collection in 1987, Herrera has dressed a range of well-known brides including, recently, model Hilary Rhoda, who wed former New York Ranger Sean Avery last month. Olivia Palermo wore a Carolina Herrera ensemble for her wedding last year. Many fans of the designer know her wedding gowns from Kristin Stewart’s “Bella Swan”

Carolina Herrera Resort 2016

Resortwear at Carolina Herrera started with a feather illustration. “I adore feathers,” Herrera said. “It’s all about color and very simple shapes. Effortless.” That idea of lightness came through in the collection’s easy, minimalist proportions — a strapless minidress in layered chiffon, tea-length skirts in silk faille and exaggerated culottes in lightweight jacquard — done in shades of coral, red and pale blue, some embellished with appliqués or floral- and feather-print motifs.

Herrera’s lineup also included a few chic daywear offerings, such as silk floral-printed pants, tunics in tweed and cotton and plenty of matching separates, such as a red-and-white-striped skirt suit. For evening, Herrera worked a series of brilliant yellow looks against a black flower print, a bold and elegant contrast. But it was a pale blue cropped top and ball skirt — embellished with a single carnation at the waist — that encapsulated the collection’s delicate take on femininity.
