Hillary Clinton, Yara Shahidi Keynote Teen Vogue Summit in L.A.

“Thanks so much for all of your help,” Hillary Rodham Clinton said backstage at the inaugural Teen Vogue Summit on Saturday morning. As she posed for a photo with a large group of police officers at 72 and Sunny’s Playa Vista campus in Los Angeles, Clinton told the photographer, “This is a very important group. Take a good picture.” The former Secretary of State and presidential candidate had just completed the opening keynote conversation with activist and “Black-ish” actress Yara Shahidi.
While the question-and-answer session lasted 40 minutes, it took less than seven for the discussion to shift toward the previous night’s vote on tax reform. “In the last 24 hours, the Senate passed this absolutely horrible tax-cut plan,” Clinton said, as the crowd booed in support of her sentiment. “It’s great for Donald Trump and his family. It’s great for the billionaires who support him, but it’s going to make life much harder for middle-class families and poor families. It even cuts the tax deduction for teachers who buy supplies for their classrooms and their students.”

“Now it takes care of you if you have a private yacht or a private plane,” she continued, “but heaven forbid if you buy some

In Iowa, Hillary Shows She’s Learned Something About Running While Female

This post originally appeared on The Cut.
By Rebecca Traister

For all those Democrats who fretted for the past year about the probability of a listless primary, and for any who (inanely) predicted a “coronation” for Hillary Clinton (I mean, just as a point of fact, in the U.S. we don’t hand out president crowns, and especially not to women), Monday night put every fear to rest. Democrats could not have asked for a more riveting nail-biter. As of this writing, it’s still not clear whether Bernie Sanders or Hillary Clinton “won,” and I gather, after eleventy hours of listening to polling analysis, that it may not be clear for another eleventy hours.

That’s pretty thrilling. Democrats have two candidates about whom voters feel passionate. The win/tie is tremendous for Sanders, the long-shot challenger from the left. But it’s also pretty great for Clinton, who could have decisively lost Iowa but hung on, and who also became the first Clinton (and the first woman ever) not to have outright lost the state.

Clinton’s approach tonight — her ballsy power-play move of stepping over Republican winner Ted Cruz’s victory speech, and her happy-warrior tone — showed a marked contrast from her 2008 loss in Iowa, a night when she came in nine points behind Barack Obama and one point behind John Edwards. Back then, her concession was dismal, wan, practically consumptive. Eight years later, she was energetic, brassy, and seemed to show she’s learning something about navigating the choppy waters of running for president while female.

The key thing she did in her “sigh of relief” speech on Monday was right her flailing message about health-care reform, which in recent days had gone off the rails for her in a very familiar way.

She was firm and positive in her framing of her goal: “I know that we can finish the job of universal health-care coverage for every man, woman, and child!” she shouted affirmatively and warmly, in sharp contrast to the sharper tone she’d deployed in recent days, culminating in a YouTube clip that was swiftly dubbed by her critics “Hillary’s Mean Scream.” In it, Clinton had bellowed about how “people who have health emergencies can’t wait for us to have some theoretical debate about some better idea that will never, ever come to pass!”

Clinton, who has in one way or another spent decades of her career pushing for universal health-care reform, was expressing her obvious lack of patience for a candidate whose idea of starting from scratch, rather than building on the reforms of the flawed but hard-won Affordable Care Act, strikes her as pie-in-the-sky.

But in failing to present an upbeat take on her disagreement with Sanders, Clinton had sounded like a scold, the disciplinarian, the mean mommy, the pragmatic downer — all versions of a feminized role that she and many, many women have long found it incredibly difficult to escape.

Recall the days following the 2008 Iowa caucus, when the media took advantage of Clinton’s defeat to let loose with their resentment and animosity toward her. That was when conservative Marc Rudov told Fox News that Clinton lost because “When Barack Obama speaks, men hear ‘Take off for the future!’ When Hillary Clinton speaks, men hear ‘Take out the garbage!'” It was in the days after Iowa that Clinton infamously got asked about how voters believed her to be “the most experienced and the most electable” candidate but “are hesitating on the likability issue.” In late January, columnist Mike Barnicle told a laughing all-male panel on Morning Joe that Clinton’s challenge was that she looks “like everyone’s first wife standing outside of probate court.”

What was true in ’08 remains true this year. From her entrance into the campaign, Clinton has been tagged as unlikable, as the practical buzzkill, the boring one with the wonky facts and figures and experience who’s going to show up and tell you that your big plans are impossible, but that she’s thought of some smaller and more doable fixes. Meanwhile, Sanders, who entered the race shouting righteously and correctly about a system that’s broken, has, as his campaign has strengthened, become the unlikely vehicle of idealistic hopes and dreams for America — Free college! Free health care! A $ 15 minimum wage! The breakup of the big banks!

His vision of revolution, as Bryce Covert wrote in Monday’s New York Times, differs significantly from Clinton’s approach, which Covert described accurately as “pragmatism incarnate.” Critics argue that his promises have no chance of coming to fruition, but their soaring scale — and the righteous ideals to which they speak — make him a candidate it is infinitely easier to feel emotionally inspired by. Clinton’s realism may in fact be one of the reasons that her supporters believe that she’d make a more prepared and effective commander-in-chief than Sanders — something that in fact provokes rational excitement, especially by those thrilled at the idea of an experienced, capable, hard-assed Democratic woman president. But hers is not an easy pose to pull off, if you’re trying to win the hearts of America. In fact, MSNBC’s Andrea Mitchell reported tonight that many young voters in Iowa had told her that their decision between Clinton and Sanders had come down to head versus heart, respectively.

That hurts, and it falls into a very old, very well-worn gendered pattern, in which women — understanding that making promises they cannot back up will not get them taken seriously and that they must prove themselves extra-competent in order to be understood as basically competent — become the nose-to-the-grindstone wonks, easily compared to know-it-all bores like Tracy Flick and Hermione Granger. They’re the wet blankets, the ones all too acquainted with the limitations imposed by the world, and all too eager to explain their various ideas for working around them. Men, and especially white men, whose claims to public or political power are more easily understood, are permitted a slightly looser approach.

There’s been some talk about how a female candidate could never be as scruffy as Bernie Sanders, as uncombed and unkempt. A woman could never be as grumpy as Bernie, as left-leaning as Bernie, as uncooperative with party machinery as Bernie. And that stuff is true enough. But the bigger truth is that what Bernie does, to great acclaim, that Hillary Clinton could never do is make big promises of institutional overthrow, tug on our imaginative heartstrings by laying out a future that might not be grounded in reality, and urge a revolution.

Here is a truth about America: No one likes a woman who yells loudly about revolution.

And no, it’s not just this woman. This is a paradigm; it’s why Mom is the disciplinarian and Dad is the fun guy, why women remain the brains and organizational workhorses behind social movements while men get to be the gut-ripping orators, why so many women still manage campaigns and so many men are still candidates.

So here we are! On our way to New Hampshire, a state that inspiring Bernie Sanders is overwhelmingly favored to win. But for one of the first times, in her speech in Iowa, I saw Clinton work effectively to turn the pragmatic ship around, to take what she wants to say — that Sanders’s soaring promises are empty but her more modest proposals might come to pass — and make it sound almost exciting.

News in Brief: Sight Of 400 War Elephants On Horizon Marks Hillary Clinton’s Arrival In Swing State

WHEELING, OH—Feeling the earth shake beneath them as they watched the procession climb over the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains toward their village, sources along the Ohio border confirmed Thursday that the sight of 400 war elephants marching on the horizon marked Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s arrival to the critical swing state. “Be still; some vast legion is headed our way!” said local automotive worker Dustin Collins, 35, who, like thousands of Wheeling residents, heard the rhythmic, thunderous beating of the cavalcade’s 10-foot-wide drums and immediately rushed to a window to gaze upon the advancing ranks. “Behold the standard-bearers at the head of each column, and lo, make out the trumpets’ piercing tones. It can only be the great armies of Hillary emerging from her stronghold in the East!” At press time, a large shadow had been cast over the city after the campaign released thousands …

Hillary Clinton: I Learn Something About Myself From ‘SNL’ Impersonations

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton is excited to appear on “Saturday Night Live” this week, but wouldn’t say whether she prefers Amy Poehler or Kate McKinnon‘s impersonations of her more.

While Clinton said that she was more familiar with Poehler’s impressions of her, she added that she looked forward to seeing more of McKinnon’s. She added that she was happy “SNL” executive producer Lorne Michaels had both women do impersonations of her on the show.

“They come at it from a slightly different perspective, and I learn something about myself watching them pretending to be me, so I’m looking forward to spending the time with Kate,” the presidential hopeful said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight on Friday. “I mean, I’m just thrilled that he’s got these amazing women doing these impersonations. I want to see how it goes.”

Clinton added that she loved the atmosphere of rehearsal, where one often has to fly by the seat of one’s pants.

“It is crazy. I mean, you show up and they’re still writing it and, you know, putting together the airplane in the air and they’re showing you what they want you to say and where they want you to stand and then they decide, no, they want to do it different,” she said. “I love it because it is almost like a creative act that you’re in the middle of, and you’re participating but you’re also watching and learning from it.”

Hillary Clinton Impersonates Donald Trump On ‘SNL’

WASHINGTON (AP) — Set ’em up, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and lend an ear to the troubles of a presidential candidate.

The front-runner for the Democratic nomination appeared on the season opener of “Saturday Night Live” as a wise bartender named Val who pours a drink or two for, ahem, Hillary Clinton (played by “SNL” regular Kate McKinnon).

Most political candidates play themselves on “SNL,” often for just a cameo in a sketch or to declare the show’s famous tag line, “Live from New York — it’s Saturday night!” Seldom do they go all-out thespian and play a character in a sketch.

“So, Hillary,” Clinton asks McKinnon, “what brings you here tonight?”

“Well, I needed to blow off some steam,” McKinnon says. “I’ve had a hard couple of 22 years.”

Asked what she does for a living, McKinnon says in imitation of Clinton’s earnest monotone: “First, I am a grandmother. Second, I am a human, entrusted with this one green Earth.”

“Oh,” Clinton says, “you’re a politician.”

And just who is Val? Clinton deadpans, “I’m just an ordinary citizen who believes the Keystone pipeline will destroy our environment.”

From there the skit poked gentle fun at Clinton’s slow opposition to the pipeline, her late-arriving support of gay marriage, and her inability to take a vacation. Notably absent was a crack about her private email server, the source of months of criticism from Republican lawmakers and candidates.

Speaking of Republican candidates, at one point Clinton — the real one — mimicked Donald Trump with a hoarse, throaty rendition of his dismissive statement, “Uh, you’re all losers.”

In a nod to the past, former cast member Darrell Hammond showed up on a barstool as Bill Clinton, who takes a look at Clinton and McKinnon and says, “My god, they’re multiplying!”

Overall, the skit was friendly toward Clinton and closed with the former first lady joining McKinnon in singing “Lean on Me.” Clinton had another role in the show — introducing the first musical number by host Miley Cyrus.

Republicans didn’t fare nearly as well as “SNL” began its 41st season. The opening sketch made fun of Trump and his wife, Melania, and a faux commercial pitched a pill that cures people of thinking they can be president — specifically low-polling GOP candidates Rick Santorum, Mike Huckabee and Jim Gilmore.

Clinton has struggled at times to show herself as warm and personable with a sense of humor, qualities that have been valued in modern campaigns driven by broadcast media and now social media. The former secretary of state has already appeared this year on talk shows hosted by Jimmy Fallon and Ellen DeGeneres.

Hillary Clinton Will Appear On ‘Saturday Night Live’ Season Premiere

Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton will make an appearance on this weekend’s season premiere of NBC’s “Saturday Night Live.”

According to The New York Times, neither NBC nor Clinton’s campaign would confirm the appearance, but the Times reported that several people close to Clinton said she will participate in the show’s cold open, alongside “SNL” cast member Kate McKinnon, who impersonates her on the show.

Clinton was originally supposed to deliver the keynote address at an event for the Human Rights Campaign, a notable LGBT rights organization, that night — a spot that has now been filled by Vice President Joe Biden.

The cameo comes as Clinton’s campaign mulls how to make the candidate more approachable to voters. The former secretary of state last appeared on the show during her 2008 presidential campaign, in a sketch that poked fun at her distinctive laugh, starring Amy Poehler as Clinton.

Hillary Clinton Fumed About Changing Passports For Same-Sex Parents In 2011

WASHINGTON – Hillary Clinton was furious about a 2011 State Department decision to replace the words “mother” and “father” with gender-neutral terms on U.S. passport applications, warning of the wrath of Sarah Palin, according to newly released emails.

“Who made the decision that State will not use the terms ‘mother and father’ and instead substitute ‘parent one and two’?” Clinton wrote in an email to staff on Jan. 8, 2011. The email was released Wednesday by the State Department as part of an ongoing dump of emails that Clinton sent from a personal account during her time as secretary of state.

“I’m not defending that decision, which I disagree w and knew nothing about, in front of this Congress. I could live w letting people in nontraditional families choose another descriptor so long as we retained the presumption of mother and father,” she wrote. “We need to address this today or we will be facing a huge Fox-generated media storm led by [Sarah] Palin et al.”

Cheryl Mills, Clinton’s chief of staff at the time, responded, “Reaching out to folks to find out.”

The State Department’s proposed change was intended as a nod to people with same-sex parents. Clinton learned about it from a Washington Post story published the day before. The article featured a gay rights group praising government officials for acknowledging “that hundreds of thousands of kids in this country are being raised by same-sex parents.” Conservatives grumbled that the change reflected “the topsy-turvy world of left-wing political correctness.”

But the department ended up not making the change. The day after Clinton’s email, Mills sent Clinton an Associated Press story with the headline “State Department steps back on gender-neutral parentage, won’t replace terms ‘mother,’ ‘father.'”

A spokesman for Clinton’s presidential campaign did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday.

Clinton has had strong support from the gay and lesbian community in her presidential bid, but she’s also hit some bumps along the way.

In June 2014, she tangled with NPR’s Terry Gross (who tangles with Terry Gross?) over her evolution on same-sex marriage, and argued that marriage laws should be left up to individual states. Even at the time, Democrats had already abandoned that stance in favor of calling for constitutional protections.

And going back further, The Washington Free Beacon, a conservative news site, this week released audio recordings of Taylor Branch, a confidante of former President Bill Clinton, sharing conversations they’d had about Hillary’s supposed discomfort with gay people during her 2000 Senate race.

According to Branch, Bill said at the time that Hillary’s “conservative religious temperament” might make her uncomfortable with gay people “acting out or pushing her to the limit.”

But Clinton did a lot for the LGBT community during her time as secretary of state. She announced that gay diplomats would receive benefits similar to those received by their heterosexual counterparts, something they’d previously been denied. She also, in December 2011, gave a historic speech in Switzerland in which she addressed human rights abuses against LGBT people. Gay rights advocates said this was a first.

“Like being a woman, like being a racial, religious, tribal, or ethnic minority, being LGBT does not make you less human,” Clinton said in her 2011 speech. “And that is why gay rights are human rights, and human rights are gay rights.”

Jimmy Fallon Gives Advice To Hillary Clinton — Donald Trump-Style

“Hello?” Hillary Clinton said, putting an ear to the phone.

“Congratulations, you’re speaking to Donald Trump,” said the person on the other line.

While we’d love to eavesdrop on a real phone conversation between the former secretary of state and the GOP frontrunner, we’ll have to settle for this exchange between Clinton and Jimmy Fallon’s best impression of the business magnate.

“You wanna win, here’s what you gotta do,” Fallon-as-Trump told the 2016 Democratic candidate during her appearance on “The Tonight Show” on Wednesday. “First: Yell. I yell all the time … Next: Pick 3 things everyone loves, and say you hate them. Watch — puppies, stupid. Rainbows? Total losers. Fall foliage? Tree puberty.”

During the skit, Clinton discussed her position on immigration and women’s rights. She also snuck in a jibe about Trump’s famous hairdo, comparing it to “a soft serve at Dairy Queen.”

Watch the whole exchange above.

Scarface Talks Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton & Why Donald Trump Is A Genius (VIDEO)

(AllHipHop News) Hip Hop fans know Scarface is not one to hold his tongue. The rap legend sat down with The Unlikely Show with Chuck Creekmur and Nida Khan, and the conversation covered the current state of American politics.

[ALSO READ: Scarface: I Don’t Like The Geto Boys Or None Of Those Albums]

As the 2016 presidential campaign heats up, Face had a lot to say about leading candidates Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton. He also mentioned the current man in the White House – President Barack Obama.

“I said that I wouldn’t vote for Obama, because I love him, and they’re gonna want him hanged after that,” said Scarface referring to lyrics from his Emeritus album. “I said that sh*t way before he was the president.”

Clinton is currently the favorite to replace Obama as the next presidential nominee of the Democratic Party. The former Secretary of State has been facing criticism for using a personal email server. But she has consistently claimed none of the messages were marked classified.

“Hillary’s getting f*cked with behind emails,” stated Scarface. “Who gives a f*ck about an email? Was it kiddie porn or some sh*t? Do we have a f*cking problem?”

When it came to controversial Republican front-runner Donald Trump, Face offered an explanation for why the businessman/reality TV star is connecting with certain voters.

“I think Donald Trump is a genius. I think he’s a gazillionaire for a reason,” said the Houston native. “I think he may say some sh*t that’s offensive. I think he is unapologetic, because he’s f*cking rich.”

Scarface added, “I’m not advocating a motherf*cking thing about Donald Trump. But I see his vision, and I know what his aim is. Does that sh*t help us in our position where we are today? No, because we don’t have the money to invest in the sh*t he’s getting ready to put together.”

Scarface’s Deeply Rooted album is scheduled for release on September 4.

Hillary Clinton Tries Boosting Poll Numbers: Threatens Third Party Run, Gives Out Bernie Sanders’ Phone Number

In an attempt to shore up her falling poll numbers, Democratic presidential contender Hillary Clinton went on the offensive, lashing out against minorities, considering a run as a third party candidate, and giving out Senator Bernie Sanders’ phone number. “She is finally tapping into the anger of the American public,” said Owen Cumbertweak, Clinton’s campaign Messaging Brigadier. “This is the outsider Clinton, not the Hillary Clinton who launched her presidential campaign in April and rebooted it six times after that. Because, remember, before she was a Washington insider, she was an outsider. So now, she’s an outsider again, but, like, a super outsider.”

The former Secretary of State made these comments during a rambling, unscripted seventy-minute speech, which included other observations:

I want to be the Democratic nominee, but if they don’t treat me fairly, I may keep the door open for something else. You like Joe Biden so much–why don’t you marry him? And give me a break–Martin O’Malley? Loser. Lincoln Chafee? He’s from Rhode Island–the smallest state, full of Hispanics and not the good kind. And Bernie Sanders? He says he’s a socialist, but Ronald Reagan once said he was a Democrat and look what happened. The Justice Department? Stupid. The State Department? Full of idiots and stupid idiots. I mean, if it weren’t for me, none of you would even be talking about hacking or secret documents or computers or national security. You should be thanking me for using a private server! We need to build a cyber wall and I’ll make the Russians and the Chinese pay for it. They will pay for it and they’ll give each person in the United States a new car. Russia and China love me. They love me. Everybody loves me! I get things done because I have a lot of money. If I can get 25 million dollars making speeches, I can get Russia and China to do whatever I want. Also, Maureen Dowd is a bimbo.

Following the speech, a Qunnipiac poll indicated that Clinton fell to twenty points behind Sanders and twelve points behind a DeWalt cordless drill.

Hillary Clinton Makes Waves in the New Look of Monochromatic Dressing

Hillary Clinton blue Ralph Lauren suit

The monochromatic ensemble has been sported by everyone from Kim Kardashian West to Victoria Beckham, however, there is one woman who rises above all others when it comes to putting a personal spin on the look: presidential candidate and former First Lady and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.

She kicked off her campaign on Roosevelt Island this past weekend, taking to the stage in one of her signature pantsuits. Clinton is among the latest politicos to join Instagram, and her first post was a sneak peek into her campaign wardrobe. The custom Ralph Lauren Collection ensemble in cobalt blue was a youthful yet elegant statement in power dressing and hit all the right notes thanks to the coordinating blue top. With seventeen months until Election Day, there will be plenty more opportunities for her to impress prospective voters with her personal style.

Cecily Strong Reminds Reporters: Covering Hillary Clinton’s Appearance Isn’t Journalism

“Saturday Night Live” cast member Cecily Strong taught the journalists at the 2015 White House Correspondents’ Dinner an important lesson about covering Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton.

Strong, who hosted the dinner, asked the journalists in the room to stand up and raise their right hand, and instructed them to repeat after her.

“I solemnly swear… not to talk about Hillary’s appearance… because that is not journalism,” Strong said.

And there you have it: the journalists of America have sworn to produce 2016 coverage free of sexism. Thanks, Cecily!

Campaign 2016: Hillary Clinton to Replace Her Cold Cyborg Heart With a Human One

As part of the launch for her 2016 presidential campaign, representatives of former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton have confirmed she will replace her cold cyborg heart with a human one. “This is just one way of tweaking the Clinton brand in the months to come,” said Team Hillary media Field Marshal Ernest T. Stickler, following Clinton’s presidential announcement via video message. “We want to show America the real Hillary: the spontaneous Hillary; the fun, breezy Hillary; the Hillary who doesn’t need constant battery charges or modifications to her enhanced biofuel cells.”

The human heart for Clinton will be provided by Malcolm Whitloor, a 42-year-old sales manager and lifelong Democrat from Eaton Rapids, Michigan, whose last words, according to inside sources, were, “What time is it? How did you get in my house?” The operation to replace Clinton’s present cybernetic power source will be streamed online and, if successful, will be followed by a procedure to remove the array of crystalline emotion-inhibitors that are surgically fused to her brain stem.

“We predict Ms. Clinton will make a full recovery, but it may take a while for her to operate at full capacity and successfully interact with other humans,” said Stickler. “As a result, she will not be able to campaign or communicate directly with anyone until, oh, let’s tentatively say November 8, 2016.”
