Hedi Slimane Gives First Interview At Celine

PARIS – Hedi Slimane has given his first interview since his nomination at Celine to French daily newspaper Le Figaro. The famously discreet designer spoke to journalist Laurence Benaïm in Tuesday’s issue of the newspaper.
The interview comes days before his debut collection at Celine, which will be unveiled on Sept. 28 during Paris Fashion Week.
“I am delighted to come back to a French house, a tradition, professions, ateliers,” said Slimane. “Paris is the best at ‘handmade,’ which is incredibly chic. Beyond the virtuosity of the ateliers, this savoir-faire is due to a state of mind, a way of working, the immediate understanding of a model, a particular feeling that can only be found in Paris.”
He explains that an additional atelier has been added to the 17th century mansion that houses Celine’s headquarters, the Hôtel Colbert de Torcy in the 2nd arrondissment, which will be dedicated to the creation of Celine’s first men’s wear line.
Upon arriving at Celine, Slimane chose to rebrand the maison by taking the French accent off the house’s name.
“It’s in no way about marking my territory, quite the contrary,” said the designer, adding that it was his way of “putting the church back at the center of the

The Interview That Crossed The Line — And What I Still Believe About Vulnerability

At the 2014 Grammys, I performed “Same Love” alongside Madonna, Macklemore, Ryan Lewis, and Queen Latifah while 33 couples were married on live television. And then I floated to the planet Orkjar on a golden pop-tart, because in what universe does a chubby lesbian get to be a red sparkling princess lady that sings about gay love? I cried for hours in the rehearsal, overwhelmed by the implications of what we were about to do.

465369213

The day after that surreal performance, I felt electric. I was in the middle of recording my first full-length album, and was scheduled to appear on a live celebrity talk show to promote my single. It was one of those shows where they recap vapid useless celebrity gossip, so naturally I couldn’t wait to dish on the moment when I pulled up to the glitzy after-party in a dirty red minivan with my parents, or when my girlfriend and I danced with a tipsy Anna Kendrick, or that my mom continued to insist that Skrillex was the nicest boy she’d ever met, and we ought to “sing a duet.” Unfortunately, this interview on this TV show was nothing like that. This interview pulled the golden pop-tart rug out from underneath me.

The morning-after interview started the way most interviews do: “How was working with Macklemore? Did you know Madonna was going to come out on stage? Do you shit cupcakes?” For some reason, the interview took a strange turn. Perhaps it was the interviewer’s hunger to be taken more seriously, to have a compelling story, to catch tears falling on the couch a la Barbara Walters. But whatever the reason, I was asked without relevance or warning about my childhood abuse, as well as being raped in an army barracks as a teenager. Any hopes of giggling about Skrillex evaporated quickly. I was aware that the information of my sexual abuse was out in the world, but that morning, when I was putting the final touches on my makeup, my sexual traumas hadn’t crossed my mind once. Why would they? I tried to respond as best I could, knowing that it was live television, but everything afterward was a blur. As soon as the cameras were off, I went into a full-blown panic attack. I didn’t know it then, but this same situation would happen multiple times in the year.

I questioned so much after that interview. Have I done this to myself? Is this what happens when you are vulnerable and open? How do I take back control of the telling of my own story? I started noticing weird shit after that interview — the disassociation we create between us and celebrity. How much I craved honest connection, and how I realized I was only receiving a strange form of being collected. I started realizing my own fascination with celebrity culture. Started wondering why people hate the Kardashians so vehemently — or, on the other side of the coin, adore them and obsess over their facial structures. It dawned on me — people have misdirected anger at the Kardashians or celebrities who have a disproportionate ratio of fame to talent. They don’t actually hate Kim Kardashian. They are upset with the culture that fetishizes them — where media prioritizes and praises ratings rather than substance. The Kardashians are simply opportunists. I began fearing the heavy societal commodification of celebrity culture, and was deeply saddened with the realization that music consumption is only vaguely a part of the equation for successful artists.

I wrote “Ribcage” because I was exhausted. I wrote it because my truth was hungover and needed a sarcastic joke. I wrote it because “Secrets” was an optimistic version of vulnerability, and because self-empowerment doesn’t always come wrapped in a bow.

I will continue to talk about my own sexual trauma when I feel safe enough to, and when I’m in control. I still believe in the power of vulnerability — that openness is the key to empathy, and that empathy is the key to human connection.

News in Brief: Man Really Letting No One Have It During Exit Interview

SPRINGFIELD, MA—Keeping his voice at a measured volume and holding everything back, departing employee David Hughes was really letting no one have it during his exit interview Monday, sources at local accounting firm Grier and Associates confirmed. “As soon as he went in there, he started listing off supervisors and colleagues he had worked with over the years and saying only the briefest, most courteous things about each of them—he’s sparing everyone!” said office manager Teresa Ullman as she watched Hughes through the glass conference room window, noting that her coworker appeared hell-bent on making sure every one of the complaints and frustrations that had built up over the past eight years stayed bottled up inside. “Man, he just keeps hammering management with polite agreeableness toward its policies and expressions of gratitude at having worked here. Donald Trump Just Won’t Give Up His Birther Fantasy In Colbert Interview

Donald Trump has been coming under fire for refusing to distance himself from the “birther” movement he helped fuel, which claims President Barack Obama wasn’t born in the United States.  On Tuesday night’s “Late Show,” host Stephen Colbert offered the GOP frontrunner a chance to put the question behind him once and for all.

“I’m going to throw you a big fat meatball for you to hit out of the park right now,” Colbert said. “This is the last time you’ll ever have to address this question if you hit the ball.”

“I want to hear this one,” Trump said.

“Barack Obama, born in the United States?” Colbert asked.

When Trump hesitated, Colbert tempted him with the “meatball.”

“It’s a meatball, it’s hanging out there,” Colbert said, mimicking a batter’s home-run swing. “Right there — c’mon.”

But for Trump, it was a swing and a miss.

“I don’t talk about that anymore,” he said.

“You don’t talk about it?” Colbert asked.

Trump said he would rather talk about jobs and veterans, but Colbert cut him off.

“The meatball is now being dragged down subway steps by a rat,” Colbert said, referring to the now-famous pizza-stealing rat. “You missed the meatball.”

The response is in line with what Trump offered on Sunday to a similar question on “Meet the Press.”

“I just don’t want to discuss it,” Trump told host Chuck Todd, calling it a “long, complex issue.”

After taping his Colbert appearance, Trump tweeted that the birther movement began with Hillary Clinton:

FactCheck.org reports that while the issue was raised by diehard Clinton supporters in 2008, there is nothing to link Clinton, her campaign or her staff to the issue.

Trump is set to appear on national TV again on Sunday on “60 Minutes.”

INTERVIEW: Patricia Clarkson on Learning to Drive

The first time I saw Patricia Clarkson onscreen was in her feature film debut in Brian De Palma’s 1987 crime epic The Untouchables. The subsequent decades have seen the hugely talented Clarkson rack up a truly impressive list of credits working alongside some of the most popular and well-respected actors and filmmakers of all time, in the process garnering considerable acclaim for her work on both big screen and small (she took home two well-deserved Emmy Awards for guest appearances on the HBO skein Six Feet Under).

For her latest project, the luminous Clarkson stars in Isabell Coixet’s Learning to Drive, a charming slice-of-life fable co-starring Sir Ben Kingsley. The film, inspired by a 2002 New Yorker article by Katha Politt, casts the actress as Wendy, a recent divorcee who forms a unique and unlikely bond with Darwan (Kingsley), a Sikh driving instructor. What follows are some highlights from my conversation with Clarkson about the film, her relationship with Kingsley, and the continuing difficulties for women in Hollywood:

I was just talking to my colleagues about how we don’t get these kinds of stories very often. I know this film spent something like 10 years in development.

I spent nine years trying to get this movie made alongside Dana Friedman. The wonderful Dana Friedman. It was a journey.

Talk to me about that. What was it about this story that you said, “I will stick with it.”

I was so enamored of the essay in The New Yorker, and I love Katha Pollitt. She’s many things but she’s a poet at heart to me. She’s written one of favorite poems of all time, called “Small Comfort”. Read it sometime. You’ll see.

I’ll seek it out.

But I was so enamored of this story. It resonated. It stayed with me. Then I found that Dana Friedman had commissioned a script by Sarah Kernochan. Sarah Kernochan really took the short story and ran. I think she had Katha Pollitt’s blessing to just…She took this story and made it a movie.

It kept the integrity of Wendy…The character in the essay was Filipino, the driver. But Sarah Kernochan had friends in the Sikh community, and decided to make the driver Sikh, which I thought was very beautiful. The culture, I knew a little of and now I know a lot of, which is something that will stay with me for the rest of my life.

I just thought she captured…Sarah had the heart of Katha in her, the essence of Katha, and really made it a movie. Made it a funny, witty, poignant movie in equal doses of comedy and tragedy. And I just thought it was unusual. It was surprising, and unusual, and had beauty to it. Great comedy. Like, real. I thought some of the circumstances in this film were genuinely funny, that grownups would find funny.

It’s funny: as the film has opened and people have seen this, I know this is is an adult film, but my nieces and nephews have seen it and loved it. I’ve had some young friends go to see it and they love it. Love it. So, I do think, while this is a movie about middle-aged people, it resonates far greater. But I just…I wanted this story to be seen. I wanted people to laugh and hopefully cry, simultaneously.

I knew I just wanted to be a part of this and I didn’t give up. But it’s a tough movie to get made. But it was worth the journey. It was worth the journey. It really was. I actually arrived at a better place to play Wendy nine years later. I really did. [laughs] I had nine more years of life and love and loss. I was ready to play Wendy by the time we started rolling that camera, when I don’t know that I really was nine years ago.

This is a contention that I have, and I’d love for you to confirm or disconfirm it. I think that Hollywood does not allow us to be a part of the process that women go through as they get older, in the same that way that we have the opportunity with men. For example, we’ve seen Robert De Niro go from young man to distinguished older actor. We’ve seen that entire process. I feel like those same opportunities are not available to women.

They’re not as abundant as they are to men. And that’s sadly just the nature of this industry. It is a male-dominated industry. It is an ageist industry. That will never change, sadly. I mean, it’s changing. Maybe a hundred years from now, somehow the scales will tip and it’ll be all female, female-dominated and driven films. Maybe, you know. God, I wish I could stay alive another hundred years.

You can bemoan it, but you also have to just accept it, rise above, and make your own opportunities. I do think that with the rise of independent film, and not just…I grew up in the heyday of independent film with all these beautiful distributors, Miramax and October Films, the rise, the real hotbed of independent filmmaking. But what’s happened now is something better.

Independent films have started to become commercial. They’ve started to enter the Oscar race. They’ve started to enter all of these award races. They’ve started to become the hot films of the year. They’ve lifted…More people now go to art films than before. It really was a very select group. And now cities all over the country have art houses. It used to be really New York, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Chicago. It was just the big urban cities.

But now there are more and more art houses, and people go! And so with the commercial aspect of these films, the financial wooing and winning of these films, it has made independent viable. It’s opened up doors. More doors have opened up, and so more doors have opened up to women. Women, we have great stories to tell. And people go to see them. People want to see them.

I have to tell you, this film: I’ve had more people wanting to see this film than any film I’ve done in a long, long time just because. First of all, our incredible distribution company, we have an amazing distribution company, and we have these amazing producers who stepped in and got the film made. Because of them…They’ve actually invested in this film, which is even better. They’ve decided to put their money where their mouth is.

Briefly, I’d love for you to discuss how you formed your relationship that’s just so beautiful and poignant with Ben Kingsley. What was that process like, the give-and-take?

What it starts from is a very deep and mutual respect that Sir Ben and I have for one another. We’ve known each other for a long time. We worked together on Elegy, a beautiful film we made. Have you ever seen Elegy?

I have, yeah. It’s fantastic.

A beautiful film we made together. We played lovers, and if you ever want to bond with someone, play their lover. [laughs] So, we have mutual respect and admiration for one another and a friendship that came out of that and a love for Isabel Coixet that came out of that. We worship Isabel Coixet. We really do. She is delicious and divine.

Out of all of that, out of the process of Elegy, we formed this bond, and I wanted to bring that bond to this movie because I knew we had to rock and roll. I knew we didn’t have a lot of time, a lot of money. We had to be joined at the hip in a way but to keep our disparate world. We had to keep our separate worlds in this film, which was essential, that we didn’t blur Patty and Sir Ben with Wendy and Darwan, that we kept distinct lives, separate lives in this little, tiny confined space, which is very hard to do.

But Sir Ben and I showed up, ready-to-go. I had this film in me for nine years. We had the blessing of the whole Sikh community. Anyway, he came ready. I remember the first time I saw him in the turban in the mirror, and I looked over, and he looked so beautiful. I said, “Oh my God.” I looked at him and I said, “We’re shooting a film.” There’s Darwan. I had my hair in my ponytail. I was in my green dress. I looked at him. I said, “Oh my God.”

 ”Is this real?”

“You’re here. We’ve arrived. We’re ready to shoot.” [laughs]

That’s amazing.

It was just a long time coming, you know? It was hard. It was a long process to get to, but that’s what I love most about this film, is that it has all of these remarkable women involved in it, as you know. Thelma Schoonmaker, Sarah Kernochan, Katha Pollitt, Isabel Coixet, Dana Friedman, our producer.

But it was two very young men named Gabriel and Daniel Hammond, starting a new company, who chose…They could have made any hot film. They could have had hot stars, hot people. They chose to make this beautiful film as their first film. They chose to write a check, a big one, for a small movie, and chose to be our producers and come on board. And that’s how this film got made, in one stroke.

And so that’s why I continue in my life. I continue in this business because somebody will say yes. They will. [laughs]

****

Many thanks to Patricia Clarkson for her enthusiasm, her candor, and her time. NBC Nabs Trump Interview, And MSNBC Plays It On Seemingly Infinite Loop

NBC nabbed what it claims was an exclusive interview with Donald Trump on Sunday (in reality, ABC also aired footage from a Martha Raddatz interview with the businessman). Since then, sister network MSNBC has played the exchange with Chuck Todd on “Meet the Press” so many times it makes you wonder whether the producers have lost their minds.

Since Sunday, when the network promoted the interview on three of its morning shows, it has run the same clip of Donald Trump and Chuck Todd in the reality TV star’s private plane a whopping 51 times. In total, MSNBC has featured parts of the clip 79 times up until “The Last Word With Lawrence O’Donnell” Tuesday evening.

The media continue to air silly segments asking why Donald Trump is leading in the polls, but the answer is simple: As political scientist John Sides has shown, the reality TV star’s standing in the polls is commensurate to the amount of media coverage he gets

So when MSNBC inevitably impanels a group of talking heads to talk about why Trump’s numbers keep ticking up, the network might want to consider the effect its own Trump-mania might have on the campaign.

Caitlin Stasey Says A Magazine Pulled Her Interview Because She Wouldn’t Pose Nude

There’s nothing wrong with a woman baring her body on the cover of a magazine, just ask Kim K. or Miley or Olympian Amanda Bingson. But when a woman is told to get naked for a photo shoot and doesn’t want to — and then the magazine pulls her feature — that’s a problem.

Just ask “Neighbours” and “Reign” actress Caitlin Stasey: The native Australian was supposed to grace the cover of Fairfax Media’s magazine Good Weekend, but says the publication dropped her interview once she refused to take her clothes off.

Through a series of tweets, Stasey explained to fans what apparently went down with the Good Weekend photoshoot.

On Friday, Stasey told The Huffington Post that it was not the concept of nudity she rejected, but how the magazine handled the situation. “Nudity is not inherently sexual, it isn’t shameful and doesn’t even need to be powerful,” she said. “But what was asked of me was highly stylized, highly sexualized imagery of me in panties, orchestrated by a man who never asked my permission and then disregarded my request to have the photos they would be taking of me, actually reflect me.”

Stasey added that she was under the impression the feature was “a story about me, about my work, about my world view,” and that she would not allow the magazine or its editors to proceed with “designing my message and using my body as a prop to incite interest and circulation,” she said.

The magazine’s editor, Ben Naparstek, told ABC that he believed Stasey had, in fact, agreed to be naked in the photos. Stasey later shared emails the editor had sent to prove that she actually had not signed off on a nude shoot.

Stasey tweeted a screenshot of an email she says she received from the magazine informing her that “the paper did not want to spend the budget on a photo shoot if the concept that they had envisioned wasn’t going to be used.”

In recent months, Stasey had been vocal about her frustration with the objectification of women. She founded Herself.com, a website that empowers women to reclaim their bodies by photographing them naked, but in a non-sexualized way.

“While no woman should ever have to justify her desire to stay clothed, it’s imperative that we recognize the distinction between empowerment and objectification,” Stasey told HuffPost. “Empowerment is when the subject is in control of the situation/imagery, and objectification is when the subject is coerced or exploited to fuel someone else’s means.”

Although Stasey was photographed in the nude for her website, she made clear on Twitter that that doesn’t mean she will strip at anyone’s beck and call — and certainly not Good Weekend’s. “The issue isn’t the photography itself but the expectation, the entitlement and those working under the assumption that I’d be comfortable posing naked for a publication purely because I had appeared naked previously,” she said.

And, for some ~feminist bonus points~ here is the awesome meme that Stasey made — feat. Naparstek, the dude who apparently assumed Stasey would pose nude, even though she says she never agreed to do so.

Valentino Garavani: Looking Back at a 1965 Interview

Valentino, one of fashion’s hottest houses — now shepherded by designers Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri — last week mounted another couture extravaganza in Rome. The storied label was established in The Eternal City in 1962 by Valentino Garavani, whose roots in WWD go back a half-century. In a 1965 interview, he declared “Mickey Mouse . . . my favorite reading material,” and said “Women of today have a duty to be soignée. They should be well made-up and absolutely wear lipstick — I detest women without lipstick.” And, in a prescient moment, he added that what “really makes a woman elegant are the accessories . . . many and expensive.”

What We Learned From Meek Mill’s CRWN Interview

Meek Mill was all smiles and full of jokes as he sat down with Elliott Wilson for his CRWN Interview. In front of a crowd of a melting pot of 20 somethings at New York City’s Gramercy Theatre (July 2), the Dreamchasers general had a few reasons to be flaunting that pearly white smile. His sophomore project, Dreams Worth More Than Money, is projected to debut at the no. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 chart, his legal woes are a thing of the pass and he has the heart of the woman that just about every man lusts for, Nicki Minaj.

During their 90-minute chat, the 28-year-old gave the audience insight on how he made it through his traumatizing five-month stint in jail, what lane he’s in in hip-hop,who he listens to, being a Future stan and of course his love life. Before the full episode of the sit down posts next week on WatchLOUD.com, take a look at what we learned about the MMG rep as he chopped it up with the YN.

Being in jail was a “nightmare”

Due to his celebrity status, when Meek was first incarcerated he was isolated for 23 hours a day in a cell with no cellmate.

“Imagine being locked in your bathroom for 23 hours a day for like a month,” he said.

The worst part was that he was stripped searched every day at the crack of dawn for no apparent reason.

“I was complaining to my lawyer like ‘Why they keep coming in my cell with dogs and s–t five in the morning when I’m sleep?’ Men with masks on. I gotta stand asshole naked in front of some men every night. But they were just targeting me. It’s just two sides to being famous. You could be targeted or you could be treated better. It was a terrible thing. F–k jail.”

He said he spent his time doing push ups and reading books because he “couldn’t really write any raps.”

“I hadn’t wrote on paper in six or seven years so writing on paper was hard. I like to be in a good mood when I rap.”

But despite having a case of writer’s block, the Philly spitter said he was still “putting in work.”

“I was battling everything moving because that’s the type of animal I am. “The doors never lock all the inmates would be sneaking into each other cells and having little rap cyphers. At 2 o’clock in the morning my cell would be filled with n—s. It would be pitch black.”

The rumor mill was working against him

Though he had no access to the ‘gram, Meek said he still got word of the rumors that were floating around about what he was going through while behind bars.

“They said somebody walked up to me and knocked me out and when I was sleep on the floor they said “It’s levels to this shit!,” he laughed.

Meek is a big fan of Future

“He’s just a trill n—a that be talking that trill sh-t and I like it,” he told Wilson. “The s–t he be talking [about] is just the lifestyle we’re into. I love the flows, the melody. I love to see somebody who got real talent go through the ups and downs and still be able to jump back like me.”

Nicki Minaj was Meek’s ride or die chick while he was in jail

“I had to hear n—s screaming out all this crazy shit about the girl I like and not say [anything]. I never really told anybody that I used to be talking to her on the phone at that time. We was on the phone everyday. It just ain’t happen on overnight…She was holding me down. She ain’t never miss a call.”

J. Cole and Kendrick Lamar aren’t Meek Mill’s favorites

Meek wanted to make something clear. He feels that J. Cole is “dope” and Kendrick Lamar is the “best lyricist doing it right now” but they aren’t really on his playlist.

“I don’t listen to that type of music,” he said unapologetically. “I used to listen to Kendrick sh-t and this time he came with something that just wasn’t my lane. If Nicki does a pop song nine times out of ten I’m never going to listen to it ever in my life…They got songs that I might listen to but that ain’t really my type of s–t. I’m on some Future, Young Thug, Dej Loaf, YG, Troy Ave…Yo Gotti, of course Fab.”

Other highlights:

Meek doesn’t like when Nicki is in the studio.

He also has a new song in the works with Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys.

Thought Kendrick Lamar isn’t one of his favorites, Meek says K. Dot “murdered him” on their collab “A1.”

A visual for  the”All Eyes On You” track featuring Nicki Minaj and Chris Brown is on the way.

An Interview With Award-Winning Trans Escort Viktor Belmont

2015-06-29-1435551918-5933476-Viktor_1.jpg
Rentboy.com

A few months ago at an award ceremony called The Hookies, an awards show put on by Rentboy.com to honor the best of the best in the male escorting business, host Alaska Thunderfuck presented the award for Best Newcomer to Viktor Belmont. Viktor was the first trans man to win a Hookie, an award given to him by his peers. Trans people and issues have been getting a great amount of media attention the past year or so, especially in comparison to the almost complete lack of attention the trans community has typically experienced. We’ve seen beautiful trans women like Laverne Cox grace the covers of magazines, and people within the gay community become increasingly sensitive about language that our trans family might find offensive.

But Viktor isn’t just a trans man, he’s a trans gay male escort. It’s a whole extra layer of stigma to deal with, and one that Viktor handles with aplomb. I had the chance to chat with Viktor about his recent Hookie win, how he got his start in the industry and what it’s like to work in the highly stigmatized field of professional escorting.

What initially attracted you to Rentboy.com?

There are a couple sites that you can advertise on — there was one that was really great for trans men called “myredbook” that got shut down a couple years ago, and I was looking for another avenue to advertise on. Another trans escort I know told me about Rentboy, and when I got on the site there were actually two other trans men advertising on it. Rentboy’s attitude is very much that everyone has an itch, everybody has a want and need and they’re super welcoming. Very much like, “We appreciate diversity, come on board!” and I’ve only had positive experiences.

What misconception about working as an escort bothers you the most?

I think people really don’t understand my job. The biggest misconception is that people have this idea of the type of person who is a sex worker, and what I don’t think a lot of people realize is you can’t throw a rock in a city without hitting a million escorts. San Francisco is expensive! People don’t treat my job as work. They think that folks just throw money at you, and that it’s really easy. I advertise as curating experiences — you can tell me the kind of thread-count you like on your sheets, I’ll get you a specific type of coffee, I do everything I can to make the experience exactly what you want. I’ll get done with an overnight or something, and have people say, “Oh that’s so awesome, you made all that money and it seems so easy!” And I’m just kind of like… well, every fiber of my being is making sure that everybody is getting the best time possible with me. It’s difficult when people think my job isn’t really work — it’s like, yeah it really is!

Did you expect your fellow Rentboys to be accepting of a trans newcomer, or did you anticipate some tension/transphobia?

It’s interesting because a couple of my friends, other escorts who are cisgender men, were nominated for awards, and I kind of gave them a little shout-out on Instagram asking people to go vote for them. After I made that post I got a couple text message from them saying like, “You should totally try — you should campaign to get an award!” I was just like, “I don’t know, man…” It was a little scary, but I put myself out there. I could have never expected as welcoming and warm of a reception as the one I got — it was really incredible. I posted something online and the likes just started coming in, the followers started coming in, everybody was like, “Yes, we want this! This is awesome!” I’ve had absolutely no tension or competition with other escorts — it has only been support. This community is really tight; we really help each other out.

The Hookies keep becoming a bigger deal as time goes on; I keep seeing them referred to as the Oscars of the escort industry. Why do you think female escorts aren’t getting in on the award ceremony game?

From a completely business perspective, we do live in a society where men tend to get passes where women can’t. It’s unfortunate, and is clearly a sexist problem that I have a big issue with. When it comes to the law, the kind of work we’re doing is very sensitive, and laws are definitely more enforced with women comparatively to men. I talked to my friend who is a female escort at the Hookies, and she was like, “This could not happen for women. We would definitely get shut down, and we would all be arrested.” I couldn’t tell you how we could really change that, but destigmatizing our work in general by being out and proud, showing people that there are everyday people who are escorts, that we’re all around you and it is a valid career choice, is definitely important. We’re also not really protected by law. Our work, depending on what you disclose, can be illegal. I think that those laws really target women, whether they’re cisgender or trans, comparatively to men. The bigger answer I guess is that we live in a slight state of patriarchy.

2015-06-29-1435552001-4698339-Viktor_0.jpg
Rentboy.com

You’ve mentioned in other interviews that you’re a visual artist — how much does your work affect your art?

I’ve got a couple projects going on — I’ve got a photobook that’s about my experiences with escorting. I have another one that’s a series with all these disposable cameras that I bring everywhere, which I’ve done since I was a teenager. Ever since the Hookies I’ve been taking more pictures with these disposable cameras kind of following my journey, meeting other escorts and having these beautiful relationships and capturing these beautiful morning-after and traveling moments. Just getting a little peek into what life is actually like as an escort. It’s a really intimate photobook, I feel really excited about it. I also have a book coming out with a collective called Young Blood — they’re going to follow me around for a day and capture what it’s like to rent an escort for an entire day, taking photos the whole time.

The Internet can be a messed up place — what is the most unsettling experience you’ve had online from a suitor?

One of the more unsettling things that has happened wasn’t really from a suitor, but it’s been people who I actually know. I’ve had someone’s partner approach me before, and I know they’re monogamous, and they’ll approach me on the Internet for whatever it may be, and that can be awkward. Like OK, I just saw a dick pic… and you’re my friend’s husband. It’s always turned out fine, but when it’s close to home like that, I never want to compromise somebody’s integrity.

Did you have a “coming out” experience surrounding your work as an escort, and if so, how did it compare to “coming out” as being transgender?

I’m not one of those people in my experience coming out as trans where I had one of those bright lightbulb moments where I was like 7 years old saying, “I’m a boy! This is my life!” I’ve always been fairly androgynous — I don’t feel hyper masculine or feminine all the time, so coming out for me was more like trying on a few identities and then feeling like something was a little off. I realized that not only was I attracted to men, but also on top of that I knew that I was a boy. Being a gay trans man… that’s an identity that took me a long time to get to.

In terms of coming out as being an escort, I’ve been doing sex work for a long time. For me it started as survival sex work. Hormones unfortunately aren’t covered by insurance, and it’s very hard to get that much money when you don’t come from an affluent community. Through those experiences I met some wonderful people in the community who helped support me, and who viewed sex work in this really positive light. As I became a little bit older and started working in bigger cities I became more “out” about being an escort, because for me my work is really important. I don’t just have the “run of the mill” escort experience that most people think of, very few escorts have that. I’ve been with one of my oldest clients for like six years, and was there when his partner passed away. I’ve been a really needed caretaker. Once I started having those strong relationships, I didn’t want to hide my identity as an escort because I thought the work was so important. I started by “coming out” about it to my friends a little bit, and now it’s just like when people ask me what I do I just say, “Oh, I’m an escort.” There’s no need to beat around the bush with that — I’m proud of my work, and there is no shame in it.

2015-06-29-1435552059-3201047-Viktor_5.jpg
Rentboy.com

What do you think would surprise people the most about your average day’s work routine?

The mundane aspects of you know, changing your sheets, taking a shower, making sure you have the right toothpaste or whatever. The routine of getting ready for somebody. That’s definitely unexpected for a lot of folks. I’ll go shopping at Ikea with a client. It’s not like the most exciting, but I’ll be shopping for a new bedframe, holding someone’s hand and talking about what we’re going to cook for dinner. There are a lot of those moments that I think people wouldn’t expect me to have, but clients are looking for genuine company and I’m going to give that to them. If that means going to Ikea, then so be it!

This year has been great in terms of visibility for the trans community, with more and more transgender people becoming visible to the mass public via the media. I can think of two relatively well-known transgender men, Chaz Bono and Buck Angel, but I’ve hardly seen any trans men being asked to talk about their experiences on cable news channels (for instance). Do you think “the public” has an easier time accepting trans women than trans men?

First of all, I want to congratulate the trans women who have been all over the media for being so brave. They have done so much for the community, and I can’t thank them enough. I think that they are “passing” in a way that is very accessible to the cisgender community, and these are people that folks can relate to in the way where they can look at them and think, “Oh, you look like me.” I think that definitely has affected it. Also, being a trans man, it has been very scary to be out. The amount of violent reactions that people have to trans people, especially trans people who aren’t particularly “passing” (as male or female) is very frightening. To come out and be forward with your trans identity can be very scary. It’s still a little scary for me! I do see more trans men stepping up to the plate, and I do see more trans men being represented in media. I don’t think there is any particular reason that trans women have been at the forefront… I really encourage never having a split between trans men and trans women. We are one strong trans community, and we are all family. I think everyone has their time. I’ve been watching the increase of attention towards trans men in media and couldn’t really tell you why it’s happening. I’ve just been sitting and watching and all of a sudden the past year things have kind of exploded and I’m just like, “This is awesome!”

Where do you see yourself in 10 years?

I have one driving life goal, and that is to make every person that I meet and every person in the world know that they belong here. I would love to spend all my time and all my resources helping my community — making sure that people have basic human rights, and get their basic human needs taken care of. I will definitely push as hard as I can to create a space where people don’t have to live in fear of being who they are. Growing up, I had some access to resources with the Internet, but now there is this huge community with YouTube and everything else online that’s really amazing. We can create a space where people don’t have to be afraid to be themselves. Ten years from now if I could just be spending all of my time doing that, however I can directly help the most, that’s really what I want to be doing. I want everyone to know that they’re loved.

Watch ‘OITNB’ Stars Hilariously React To Sexist Interview Questions

Uzo Aduba, Natasha Lyonne and Samira Wiley know exactly how to answer some very boring and very sexist interview questions.

The three “Orange Is The New Black” stars sat down with Brazilian comedian Rafael Cortez on June 15 at a Netflix junket and reacted to his sexist questions like the champs that they are. From Aduba’s face to Lyonne’s fierce response to a seriously sexist question — it’s clear these ladies don’t take sh*t from anyone.

Telling by their faces, the women were a bit taken aback at first:

Cortez begins the interview by asking Aduba if she thinks the series needs “a guy inside the jail with [her] doing things that just one guy can be able to do.” When Aduba quickly points out that there are indeed men in the show, Cortez replies: “No I mean guys, men, roar! Do you see my muscles? Would you like to see?” To which she says, “No.”

He continues on his weird, sexist, ambiguously satirical interview when he asked Lyonne and Wiley if their beauty gets in the way of their work. Lyonne was definitely having some trouble answering the question — or for that matter, believing it was even real. “I feel like [the question] is accidentally maybe a little bit misogynistic,” she told Cortez.

“Despite great beauty on the show, everybody is professional and talented and very capable,” Lyonne went on. “So I don’t think that really anybody is really thinking about something as meaningless as their beauty when they’re at work or certainly not this show.”

Shut. Down.

Matt Lauer’s Interview with Rachel Dolezal Shows Why It’s So Hard to Talk About Race in America

Rachel Dolezal today show matt lauer

Yesterday Rachel Dolezals parents appeared on ABC’s Good Morning America and suggested that their estranged daughter was immersed in some sort of full-bore identity crisis and in need of help. Based on what we had read about her so far, it seemed likely that they were right about Dolezal, the former head of the Spokane chapter of the NAACP who stepped down yesterday after being outed as a Caucasian woman posing as a light-skinned black woman.

Yet when Dolezal appeared this morning on the Today show—her skin heavily bronzed, her hair worn in a sort of loose Afro, her facial features almost the carbon copy of her mother’s—she came across as composed, measured, in control of her own story, and, though this feels crazy to admit, sane.

As Matt Lauer questioned her about the ways, over the years, that she has misrepresented herself, encouraging the world to make faulty assumptions about her background, she repeatedly towed the same line: I identify as black, other people are uncomfortable with that, but it’s what’s in my heart that matters and it’s the experience I’m living that’s truly important.

What struck me most about Dolezal was her unwillingness (granted, it’s sometimes infuriating) to concede even a smidge to Lauer’s worldview, even as he pushed her further and further to the brink with questions intended to provoke. Nodding, occasionally smiling, Dolezal refused to take the bait. They seemed to be talking past each other, having two completely different conversations about race in America. Each time Lauer attempted to pin her down, Dolezal pivoted, scooting out from under his questions, reframing the conflict in her own words, using a very different framework of language and identity than the one we’re accustomed to or comfortable with.

For Dolezal, words slither and slip, their meanings unfixed and mutable. Language, she seemed to say, ought to serve a higher purpose, address emotional truths rather than physical ones. Her register was half academic—some sort of post-structuralist understanding of signifiers and signs and the gulf that lies between them—and half Free to Be . . . You and Me–era political correctness: I’m just living my own truth, she seemed to suggest. Why can’t you all get onboard with that?

Why did she represent Albert Wilkerson, a black man, as her father, when her actual father is a white man? “We connected on a very intimate level as family. Albert Wilkerson is my dad. Any man can be a father,” she explained. “Not every man can be a dad.” How can she, a white woman, be the mother of a black son? “He said, ‘You’re my real mom.’ And he’s in high school, and for that to be something that is plausible, I certainly can’t be seen as white and be Izaiah’s mom.”

It never quite tracks, but it’s also clear that Dolezal is living according to a set of rules that make perfect sense to her. “Are you an African-American woman?” Lauer asked at the beginning of the interview, getting down to brass tacks. “I identify as black,” she said with a politic smile, and the precision of that answer—“black” not “African-American”—feels very deliberate. Later, he asked her why, when she sued Howard University in 2002, she identified herself as a white woman. “The reasons for my full tuition scholarship being removed and my TA position as well were that ‘other people needed opportunities, and you probably have white relatives that can afford to help you with your tuition.’ And I thought that was an injustice.” Lauer was correct to point out the hypocrisy in this flip-flop, but Dolezal doesn’t see it as a problem; language bends, labels shift, but as long as the cause is righteous, what’s the big deal?

Refusing to engage when others try to define her is a trend for Dolezal. When did you start deceiving people? Lauer asked. “I was actually identified when I was doing human rights work in North Idaho as first transracial,” she replied. “Then when some of the opposition to some of the human rights work I was doing came forward, the next newspaper article identified me as being a biracial woman. And then, the next article, when there were actually burglaries, nooses, etc., was: This is happening to a black woman. And I never corrected that.” Why not, Lauer wondered, when you knew it wasn’t true? “Because it’s more complex than being true or false,” Dolezal replied. The point is clear: Whenever possible, our culture defaults to black or white, and the words we might sub in—biracial, or even the controversial term transracial—don’t quite do the job.

Watching this uncomfortable, disjointed conversation did not clear up for me whether Rachel Dolezal is truly sane or unhinged but well media-trained. It didn’t even really help me understand whether her choices are utterly offensive, deliberately deceitful, or weirdly enlightened. What it did make crystal clear is the fact that the vocabulary we currently possess to discuss race is bizarrely inadequate. In an America in which all other identities have become fluid, in which the spectrum of sexuality is a given and class mobility, at least in theory, is an essential tenet of our national identity, race remains the one thing we continue to see as fixed, binary.

It’s peach crayon versus brown crayon, as Dolezal reminds us, referring to drawing a self-portrait at age five. It’s black versus white, a comically elementary set of terms to throw at what is clearly a very tangled knot.

Twitter Reaction To Jim Bob And Michelle Duggar Interview: Pure Horror

Wednesday night’s Fox News interview with “19 Kids and Counting” stars Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar about their son Josh’s admission that he molested five underage girls, including his sisters, caused the family name to immediately trend on Twitter.

Within hours, there were more than 10,000 tweets with the #Duggars hashtag, and many were horrified by the couple’s attempts to downplay their son’s behavior:

Several people commented on the awkward six-second pause during a part of the conversation in which Michelle Duggar was asked about the hypocrisy of robocalls she had made in an effort to fight a law promoting LGBT rights, which she warned would lead to transgendered people preying on children in restrooms.

That even drew a response from talk-show host Montel Williams:

Williams also shared his thoughts on Facebook:

There is something very sinister beneath the surface – these are people who basically said they thought they could be as preachy as they wanted because the records were sealed, these are people who seemingly minimize what happened in their home and essentially sent a message to their daughters to smile, nod and forgive. It’s eerily reminiscent of the ‘keep sweet’ mantra in Warren Jeffs’ FLDS.”

Others pointed out the hypocrisy of the Duggars craving the media spotlight with a TV show but then complaining about the media attention that the case has drawn:

Even “God” weighed in:

Fox News will air more of the interview on Friday night.

Jim Bob And Michelle Duggar Break Their Silence In First Interview Following Child Molestation Scandal

On Wednesday, “19 Kids and Counting” stars Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar broke their silence for the first time since their oldest son Josh admitted that he molested five underage girls, including his sisters Jessa and Jill. The Duggar parents additionally admitted to keeping the matter from police.

In an two-part interview with Fox News’ Megyn Kelly, the first of which aired Wednesday night, the conservative Christians, who follow the Quiverfull movement, explained how they responded when their son first confessed to them.

“There so much grief in our hearts. I think, as parents, we felt, ‘We’re failures,'” Michelle said. “We’ve tried to raise our kids to do what’s right – to know what’s right – and yet one of our children made some really bad choices and I think, as a parent, just, we were devastated.”

Jim Bob told Kelly that Josh came to them saying he was “curious” about girls, and had touched them over their clothes while they slept.

The Duggar family patriarch noted that none of the girls were aware of what had been done to them. But the touching and curiosity was not an isolated incident.

“After that third time he came to us is where we really felt like, we have done everything we can as parents…We need to get help,” Jim Bob said, adding that their solution was to send Josh to Little Rock, Arkansas to do construction work with a family friend, who was not a licensed counselor.

Jim Bob also noted that, “As parents you aren’t mandatory reporters.” He pressed that Josh “was still a kid and he was still a juvenile. He wasn’t an adult…This wasn’t rape or anything like that. This was touching over the clothes.”

Both parents admitted they felt guilty after learning Josh’s behavior continued, but “the truth is that kids will make their own choices,” Jim Bob said.

The Duggars claimed that all their children received professional counseling, including Josh, who Michelle said paid for his own treatment.

When asked if they were worried the treatment didn’t work, Jim Bob said, “Josh is a changed person.”

Michelle also revealed the family now has “safe guards” in place, including not letting the boys babysit, not letting younger ones sit on older boys’ laps, and not playing hide and go seek.

The Duggars attempted to turn things around, claiming that the real injustice is that police records were allegedly illegally obtained, and Josh’s sealed juvenile records were exposed.

In Touch, the magazine that broke the story and published the police reports, has repeatedly stated it obtained information through the Freedom of Information Act. Despite this, Jim Bob told Kelly he’s talking to lawyers about possibly suing a woman who allegedly leaked the report to the magazine.

And while the names of Josh’s familial victims had never been publicly identified, their identities were never a secret to anyone who could do the math.

Sisters Jessa Seewald, 22, and Jill Dillard, 24, (née Duggar) also broke their silence, confirming they were two of the minors whom Josh molested — though those aren’t the term they’re using.

“I do want to speak up in his defense against people who are calling him a child molester or a pedophile or a rapist, some people are saying,” Jessa told Kelly in an interview that will air on Friday . “I’m like, ‘That is so overboard and a lie really.’ I mean people get mad at me for saying that, but I can say this because I was one of the victims.”

Jessa did, however, call her brother’s actions “very wrong.”

Because the statute of limitation on this case has expired, Josh can no longer be prosecuted despite his recent confession.

However, In Touch has obtained a new police report from the Washington County Sheriff’s Office that states Josh told his father on three separate occasions that he performed sexual acts on four of his younger sisters and a family friend. The document, which isn’t as heavily redacted as previous ones, makes it clear that Josh was 15 at the time he abused a 5-year-old girl and committed at least seven acts of molestation.

In the weeks since the scandal broke, TLC has pulled “19 Kids and Counting” from its schedule, but has yet to make a long-term decision about the fate of the show — even as more than 20 advertisers have pulled sponsorship from the series.

Following his confession in May, Josh resigned as executive director of Tony Perkins’ conservative and anti-gay group Family Research Council Action. The 27-year-old is married with three children and a fourth due in July.

The Duggars’ decision to give Fox News their first interview isn’t surprising, given that the network largely ignored the story the week it first broke. According to Media Matters, Fox News spent less than two minutes covering the Duggar molestation story between May 21 and May 25, compared to almost an hour of coverage from CNN and MSNBC.

Additionally, Kelly slammed media coverage surrounding the family on Monday, asking why so little attention has been paid to the fact that police records of someone, who was at the time a teenager, were released to In Touch.

“Josh Duggar’s private, personal, sealed records have been improperly released. It doesn’t excuse any of his behavior,” Kelly said. “It’s one thing if the Duggars want to talk about it … [but] the media didn’t even pause. And there is a question about why they were so excited to feast on this carcass.”

Again, In Touch has stated they obtained police records legally through the Freedom of Information Act.

“The Kelly File” will sit down with Jill Dillard and Jessa Seewald again on Friday night at 9 p.m. Watch part one of the interview above.
