Bethenny Frankel to Unveil Skinnygirl Jeans

NEW YORK — It’s the “little moments” that Bethenny Frankel is most drawn to in her first fashion venture.
This week, the reality show star and entrepreneur will finally reveal her Skinnygirl Jeans collection with a multipronged launch including in-store appearances and a major social media push.
“I call them ‘little moments,’” she said during a last-minute line review at the One Jeanswear Group Seventh Avenue offices here last week. She pointed to a red stripe down the side of the skinny jeans she was wearing as well as the studs, zippers and chains that embellished other pieces in the line. “I like a detail,” she said. “But this is not too over the top.”
A jean with glitter embedded in the fabric that Frankel said is “understated but still sparkles,” as well as models with unfinished edges, also set the collection apart in the crowded jeanswear market, she believes.
Skinnygirl Jeans offers knit tops and jackets as well, which also have details that expand the collection beyond basics. A sweatshirt in orange is cropped and has lacing on the sleeves as well as zippers on the bottom. And a denim jacket has zippered sleeves.
Frankel also liked the “pick-up drop-off” dress she said is

Bethenny Frankel to Launch Skinnygirl Jeans Line

Bethenny Frankel is expanding her empire.
The reality show star and entrepreneur will reveal today that she is extending her Skinnygirl franchise from spirits and specialty foods to fashion.
In partnership with One Jeanswear Group, Frankel will launch Skinnygirl Jeans, a collection of denim, knit tops and jackets for women, at retail beginning this fall. The line will be targeted to department stores and will retail for around $ 100. It will also be sold online.
Frankel said she hadn’t been searching to enter the apparel space, but a friend introduced her to Jack Gross, chief executive officer of OJG, and they hit it off.
“Jack said he was meeting me as a courtesy because he wasn’t looking for any more celebrity brands right now,” Frankel said. OJG has collections with Gloria Vanderbilt, Jessica Simpson and William Rast (Justin Timberlake’s line), among others.
But once they discussed the possibilities of creating a collection, they both agreed they should move forward.
“I said I would give her 15 minutes, and after 10, I knew this would be a big idea,” Gross said. He said since that initial meeting he has been even more impressed with Frankel’s commitment to the collection.
He said she has a high level of engagement

Why You Should Match Your Eyeshadow to Your Favorite Jeans This Season

denim inspired eyeshadow

In light of Vogue’s current denim marathon, we’re suddenly feeling drawn to all things blue: blue flowers, blue sweaters, and, best of all, blue makeup. For girls who live in their jeans (and aren’t afraid to experiment a little with their beauty look), what better way to complement those crisp new skinnies than with a matching swipe of eyeshadow? Bold shades of azure, sky, and sapphire were spotted on the recent Spring ’16 runways at shows like Diane von Furstenberg, Dries Van Noten, and Marc Jacobs, where they were painted onto lids and smudged on lash lines with painterly flair. And rest assured, there’s a color and technique to suit every taste. Think of it like choosing a denim wash: Some of us prefer faded vintage jeans, while others stick to classic navy or ’70s-era cobalt. And no matter which shade you choose, you can’t go wrong with a simple scribble of liner (à la Jonathan Saunders) or a bright, Pop Art smudge of cream (seen at Missoni). In the slideshow above, we paired the season’s best street style jeans with the products to match; true denim-heads will want to try them all.

Joan Smalls Used to Want Aaliyah’s Jeans, Now She’s Designing Her Own

joan smalls denim

Joan Smalls is no stranger to customizing and creating her own jeans. “Back when I was thirteen, I was so skinny I couldn’t fit into most pairs,” says Smalls. “I had to learn to sew on my mother’s sewing machine to sew up the inseam so they would fit tighter on me!” Luckily for her, the model’s come a long way from making DIY improvements to her denim—she’s now debuting her second collection for True Religion, which includes a cool crop of skinny jeans with zipper detailing and plenty of dark-wash flares.

But Smalls’ denim choices weren’t always so chic. Back in her teens, the supermodel dabbled in the low-slung and crop top look, which is now making a comeback. “I didn’t follow the trends that were in Puerto Rico at the time,” says Smalls. “I would watch music video stations like MTV, and I would get inspired by Aaliyah and wear the slouchy baggy pants! Also, I’d be wearing these denim overalls that were baggy everywhere.”

Now, Smalls has switched up the loose-fit ’90s pairs for her True Religion pieces, including skinny black denim jeans with leather stripes on the sides (“they look like a tuxedo pant”) to jeans with zipper detailing on the pockets (“they are very fitting, super sexy, and edgy at the same time”). As for how Smalls chooses to wear them? It’s easier than you think. “I wear them with a cool pair of sneakers and an easy T-shirt. Then I just throw on a red lip,” says Smalls. “If you are super casual and your makeup looks really good, it dresses up the outfit.” And during the hustle and bustle of Fashion Week, when opportunities for outfit changes are few and far between? Those are words to live by.

Are Mom Jeans on Their Way Out? If This Balmain Vet Has His Way

faith connexion denim

It’s hard not to see the mom jean—the jolie laide jean, if you will—as a backlash to the long and mighty reign of the low-rise super skinny. But when will the painted-on, rock ’n’ roll pant make its return? If Thomas Monet has his druthers, it’s already on the way back in. Monet cut his teeth as a key player behind the scenes at Balmain during the Christophe Decarnin era (and a brief stint under Olivier Rousteing), where he worked on the washes that made items like the painted-on moto jean one of the It pieces of the era. Fans of the house at that time will no doubt recall those pale denim military getups and buttery leather trousers, slung dangerously low on the hip bones of Decarnin’s glam-rock Valkyries.

For more than a year now, Monet has been ensconced at Faith Connexion, where he and much of Decarnin’s Balmain team make up a creative tribe working in the same maximalist vocabulary that the designer honed at the famous house. Still focusing on washes and still, as word of mouth tells it, working closely with Christophe himself, Monet serves as a steward of the moto pant’s past. Even as the pendulum has swung in a more understated direction (call it the Fashion Nun effect), his love of maximalist, thrashed, rock ’n’ roll denim has never waned. Monet is an avowed fan of the fabric’s workwear origins—“not too clean!”—and seems disappointed by the current popularity of unsullied indigo. Still, he points to Hedi Slimane’s revival of more hedonistic styles as evidence that a sea change may soon come. At Faith Connexion, Monet and co. are hard at work, focusing their efforts on lived-in-feeling pieces.

Monet tells Vogue.com: “We love the denim that we’ve worn for ten years. This is the denim spirit.” Over the course of our conversation, Monet name-checks Slash but seems more interested in ideas of the counterculture than specific figures—the Summer of Love, the birth of punk. The resulting styles are time-consuming, customized denim with a certain couture spirit. (“Italian fabrics are good, but Japanese are better,” he says.) Pieces are stonewashed and painstakingly hand-distressed by artisans using sandpaper and the like. Other one-of-a-kind pairs are customized by graffiti stars of the extended FC coterie. The results are the kind of creations that fairly beg for space in the wardrobes of eclectic stars like Rihanna. Despite the label’s Parisian soul, you’d be hard-pressed to imagine them on quintessentially gamine types—say, Audrey Tautou. Monet is frank when it comes to his feelings on the way French girls, so typically infallible, do denim: “I can’t defend the French look for denim. For me, we don’t have the denim spirit.” The designer is less candid when it comes to the city’s best spots for sourcing deliciously thrashed vintage pairs: “C’est un secret!”

Why One Bona Fide Jeans Legend Wants You to Toss Your Stretch Denim

co designer

In the face of a dizzying landscape of “stretch and stretch and stretch and stretch,” what does an old-school denim legend do? In the case of François Girbaud (of Marithé et François Girbaud fame), you find some new blood. That’s how the designer came to create a capsule of denim alongside Justin Kern and Stephanie Danan of the Los Angeles–based label Co. In a twist of serendipity, Girbaud had first met an adolescent Danan when he was a dinner guest at her parents’ home. (Danan’s father owned a showroom.) It was a passing acquaintance until nearly two decades later, when the denim maestro relocated to L.A.

After a reintroduction courtesy of Andrew Rosen, an investor in Co, things clicked. Girbaud was quick to embrace the label’s aesthetic, likening its sleekly sculptural qualities to the work of Cristóbal Balenciaga. Danan, Kern, and Girbaud set to work creating denim through the ultra-polished yet unfussy lens of Co—no 501-filled mood boards allowed. “[François] came in the first day and was like, ‘We’re not going to look at the past, I don’t want to see a stack of vintage jeans that you have as a reference,” says Kern. Or as Girbaud offers with his signature candor, “We are not going to the Rose Bowl and looking [at vintage] jeans like all these designers today.” The decision to use raw denim was one the team felt strongly about. Girbaud is not one to tread lightly when it comes to the topic of stretch denim’s myriad aesthetic offenses: “People think that is sexy—it’s terrible!” Its sheer ubiquity means that for many women, that fabrication becomes a de facto choice. If raw denim has lately enjoyed a surge of popularity with menswear types, that has not necessarily been the case in women’s markets, where the untreated stuff has maintained a reputation as stiff and arduous to break in. Co’s deep indigo pairs, like a front-seamed bootcut for Fall, are just crisp enough to fall firmly in line with the brand’s inherently dressy qualities. The trio all praise the material’s inherent shaping qualities, but you won’t need to take these for a spin in the bathtub to soften them up. “The entire front is constructed like a real trouser, with satin inside and grosgrain ribbon,” Danan says. “Approach it like a garment and get rid of all your preconceived notions of what a jean should look like and feel like.” Sound advice for denimheads everywhere.

Yes, Jeans Can Be Ladylike: Meet Tu Es Mon Trésor, the Prettiest Denim Around

jourdan dunn

Right now, customized denim is at an all-time “in-your-face” high. And this is not your hippie mother’s embroidery, usually falling into brash (and sometimes crass) styles of stick-and-poke illustrations on low-slung jeans and through-the-wringer thrashed and slashed pieces. But what about those who want to take part in the decorated denim boom sans the crude and rude genres? Take it from the Tu Es Mon Trésor (translation: “You Are My Treasure”)—a label that has Rihanna stepping out of her graffiti-inspired denim and into the romantic, polished pairs.

With delicately embellished jeans dotted with pearls, a bricolage of crystals splashed on the knees, or cuffs scattered with blossoms rendered in tulle, it’s clear that the label is embracing its feminine origins. Yes, John Wayne’s favorite textile really can be ladylike. The brainchild of Tokyo-based Miki Aizawa and Aimi Fukumoto, Tu Es Mon Trésor was the result of an inability to find jeans to go with a collection of Hermès and Chanel It bags. “I felt that [the bags] would not look good with a tweed jacket!” says Fukumoto. “I wanted to wear casual clothes like denim pants with them.” She launched the Japanese denim label soon after. “For a long time now, I have had an image of a girl living in the countryside hankering for big cities,” says Fukumoto of the inspiration behind her designs, which riff on bijoux and beyond. “When she goes to cities, she borrows a Burberry trench coat and an Hermès scarf from her mother’s closet in order to be as fashionable as possible.” And with these jeans, she won’t need much else.

Vogue Editors Pick the Boyfriend Jeans They’d Most Like to Borrow

editors pick boyfreind jeans

The continued prevalence of menswear-inspired womenswear means now is the time to take things one step further with pieces literally borrowed from the boys—in fact, straight from their closets. This is nothing new when it comes to occasionally nicking an oversize button-down or pair of boxers from the man in your life, but denim? That’s a bit trickier, and for many, entirely uncharted territory. Modern-day boyfriend jeans, while indisputably stylish, can feel one-dimensional, with most pairs offering the same effect: a roomy silhouette that’s a touch masculine, a touch undone—but a bit familiar.

In search of a pair that feels fresh for fall, we asked a smattering of Vogue editors which boyfriend jeans throughout history they’d most like to borrow. Patchwork jeans, flared silhouettes, washes from white to deep indigo, and distressed, paint-splattered denim all made the list, as well as classic variations found on the usual suspects. From Jimi Hendrix’s famous snake-hipped flares to Martin Sheen’s fitted straight-leg jeans in Badlands or the modern-day distressed white jeans worn by Kanye West, it seems, when it comes to boyfriend jeans the options are endless—we just need to look in the right, unexpected places.

Move Over, Mom Jeans: Jay Z and Lenny Kravitz Show How to Wear Dad Denim

jay z street style

While the mom jean got a bit of a refresh recently from bold A-listers like Angelina Jolie Pitt, Beyoncé, and Victoria Beckham, fashionable fathers are now getting in on the game. Earlier today, two major musicians took to the streets of New York, demonstrating how dads can still reign cool in denim. Jay Z and Lenny Kravitz opted for slightly differing hues of blue—Kravitz’s has a gray tint—but each managed to make his outfit as singular as his distinctive sound.

Mr. Carter kept things simple in a T-shirt and jeans combo that focused on fit and palette. His tailored top curves just below the waistband to create a longer silhouette, while tan Timbs augment the faded quality of his ensemble. Meanwhile, Kravitz, no stranger to making any sidewalk his own personal runway whether in skinny ensembles from Saint Laurent or Tom Ford for Gucci, went for a similar look with a touch more flair. Kravitz’s striped shirt coordinates with his gray-tinged jeans, but it’s the accessories that liven up things. A weathered tan belt pairs perfectly with sandy, suede Chelsea boots for a modernized take on styles favored by David Bowie and Mick Jagger. Dadbods everywhere, take note: The dad jean has officially arrived.

Welp, Skinny Jeans Can Cause Severe Nerve Damage

LONDON (AP) — Attention wearers of skinny jeans: don’t squat — at least not for long.

Doctors in Australia report that a 35-year-old woman was hospitalized for four days after experiencing muscle damage, swelling, and nerve blockages in her legs after squatting for several hours while wearing tight-fitting denims. “We were surprised that this patient had such severe damage to her nerves and muscles,” said Dr. Thomas Kimber of the Royal Adelaide Hospital in Australia, in an email.

The patient, who was not identified, spent most of the previous day helping someone move, squatting for long periods while emptying cupboards. Clad in skinny jeans, the woman said they felt increasingly tight and her feet were numb as she walked home, making her trip and fall. Unable to get up, she spent several hours stranded outside before getting to the hospital. Kimber and colleagues published a report about the case online Monday in the Journal of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Psychiatry.

Kimber said tight jeans have previously been reported to cause nerve lesions in the groin but not the kind of nerve problems in the lower leg and severe muscle damage they saw. He said squatting compressed the nerves in the lower leg, reducing the blood supply to the calf muscles and that the skinny jeans worsened the problem.

After being treated for four days — and having her jeans cut off — the woman still had some weakness in her legs but walked out of the hospital and later recovered fully. Kimber doesn’t know if the woman still wears skinny jeans but warned her against the dangers of squatting in them.

“I think it’s the non-stretchy nature of jeans that might be the problem,” Kimber said, noting that tight pants with more elasticity wouldn’t be as dangerous since they wouldn’t squeeze nerves and muscles. He doesn’t wear skinny jeans himself, but not because of the medical risks: “I’m too old to get away with them!”

Pharrell Williams Shows Up In Jeans To Be Honored As A Fashion Icon At The CFDA Awards

When it was announced that Pharrell Williams would be honored as a “Fashion Icon” at the 2015 CFDA Awards, we started counting down the days to the big moment. Well, the wait is over.

The Grammy Award-winning singer/songwriter/producer arrived at New York City’s Lincoln Center on Monday night to receive his coveted award looking surprisingly casual. He opted for blue jeans and a blue leather jacket, rather than his signature shorts suit. Maybe it was the rainy weather or perhaps he didn’t get the memo that the event was black tie. Whatever the case, Williams is now a certified fashion icon.

pharrell williams cfda

According to the CFDA website, “The Fashion Icon Award is given to an individual whose style has made a significant impact on popular culture on an international stage.”

Williams is certainly that and he is in good company. Lady Gaga, Kate Moss, Johnny Depp and Iman have all been bestowed with the impressive title. And who can forget last year’s honoree, Rihanna, who accepted the award while wearing one of the most revealing dresses we’ve ever seen.

Here are all the looks of the night. Let us know which one you love the most in the comment section below.

Cecily Strong Jabs Obama On Charlie Hebdo, Mom Jeans At White House Correspondents’ Dinner

Comedian Cecily Strong didn’t hold back in criticizing President Barack Obama on a range of policy and personal issues during remarks at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner on Saturday.

At one point, Strong showed a fake photo of herself with former Rep. Aaron Schock (R-Ill.) in Paris, telling Obama, “You should go there sometime.”

“I hear the weather’s great in January,” she added, making it even more clear she was jabbing the president for his absence at the national unity rally after the Charlie Hebdo shootings there earlier this year.

Delving into another issue of foreign policy, Strong brought up the Islamic State, also known as ISIS.

“Even ‘SNL’ got criticized for making fun of ISIS,” the “Saturday Night Live” star said. “If anyone is guilty of taking ISIS too lightly, it’s um, you know,” she added, nodding toward the president.

She swayed into domestic policy, too, offering appreciation to Obama for the dinner.

“I know this must have cost a ton of food stamps, so thank you,” Strong told the president.

And the Chicago native reminisced about what their childhoods could have been like together if they had been friends growing up in the Windy City, playing basketball together while Obama wore her mother’s jeans.

Strong also brought up the Secret Service and the arguments of Obama “birthers.”

Don’t Let Mom Jeans Happen to You!

2015-04-07-1428428173-6458603-MIAMIMAMMAS.jpg

In high-school, my friend’s mother would pull up in a shiny Porsche convertible. Her seemingly effortless exit from the car brought teenage boys and me to a halt. Dressed in curve-hugging Dolce & Gabbana, this mother was, by anyone’s standard, a total knockout. She was sexy, stylish and didn’t look “mom-like.” But growing up in Miami, led me to believe this was “normal” until, my Miami rose-colored glasses were unfogged by two incidents — one west in San Francisco and one east in Boston — where it hit me that Miami moms don’t wear mom jeans!

The first day I dropped my kids off at their new school in the San Francisco area, I didn’t think much about my attire. I threw on my hot pink yoga shorts, a sports bra, jean jacket and my newly purchased grey Minnetonka moccasins. Yes, I am the founder of Hautedropoff.com documenting parent style at school drop-off, but that morning I was focused on getting these kids out of my hair. Don’t roll your eyes, I was anxious to attempt California yoga, find a writing spot that blasted folk music and had baristas with man buns who inserted “right on” in all conversations. But as I walked to the kids’ classrooms, I suddenly felt the heavy and silent stares. I was in a sea of flowing, long dresses paired with flat, knee-high boots — I suddenly panicked that I might have mistakenly driven my kids to the Amish School.

Now on to Boston: It was only until I stood on the sidelines of my cousin’s Massachusetts soccer game in a sea of parents styled in mom jeans, sneakers and college sweatshirts, when I began to realize maybe Miami was different from most American cities. Even the dads, as horrifying as that vision can be, were also wearing high-waisted mom jeans. Granted, this was the end of the 1990s with shows like Friends, and stores like The Gap pushing their “mom-jean” fashion agendas.  Somehow Jennifer Aniston made them work, but these parents didn’t pull them off quite the same.

As I watched Saturday Night Live‘s “Mom-Jean” skit on their 40th anniversary show, it reminded me of my observations of mom style that brisk morning in the suburbs of Boston. The overall sentiment of the skit is “Don’t let mom jeans happen to you!” In my curiousness, that morning, I leaned into my Uncle Richard, and asked innocently, “Why are all these moms dressed alike? What’s with the college sweatshirts, bad-fitting jeans and sneakers?” My uncle looked at me, and said in an obvious tone, “Mara, this is Massachusetts, not Miami.” That’s when it clicked, being raised in Miami gave me such a different perspective of motherhood — a sexier one.

As a teenager, when I would hang out at my friend’s house with the glamorous mom, it was a fun exercise in playing dress-up. I tried on every stiletto heel and paired it with every tight dress in this mom’s closet. I would then parade in front of the huge full-length mirror, knowing that this was a costume I would never adorn. Because, even then, I knew short, tight dresses can only be worn with funky shoes or ankle boots and a cool jacket, to avoid being a recipient of… ahem… mistaken identity.

My friends (her sons) seemed comfortable having such an overtly attractive mom. And now, years later, I realize why. In Miami, this really wasn’t unusual. Rarely did you see a mom in sweats or yoga pants. Unless there was an emergency, or the offender in question was a transplant from another city, a Miami mom would never appear publicly disheveled or inappropriately casual. Moms (including my own) were, and continue to be, glamorous, stylish and admired. So my idea of “mom-style” was influenced by the city in which I was raised. It never occurred to me that motherhood was too often associated with being frumpy.

One of the reasons I started my website was to chronicle the looks of stylish moms, from head-to-toe designer to urban sexy and everything in between. Miamians are influenced by a mixture of so many languages, cultures and traditions. In Miami, only one unwritten rule exists in fashion: to make an effort. And with the tremendous effort these parents make, even at the crack of dawn, someone had to document their hard work.

For so long, Miami style has been misunderstood and unfairly labeled — probably because Miami women unabashedly revel in their love of sexy style, which doesn’t simply end by the presence of offspring. Miami women are unapologetically confident and completely comfortable displaying feminism and sex appeal, even at school drop-off.

If you don’t believe me, just take a stroll through the parking lot or carpool line of any Miami school. At 7:30 am, the place is filled with six-inch stilettos or wedges, artfully applied make-up and eyelash extensions. Curvaceous and fit bodies are draped in curve-hugging, colorful fabrics. And cleavage not only makes its debut during early morning hours, but remains a fashion accessory throughout the day, and well into the evening. Even the athletic crowd adds style to what is usually a bland mix: colorful leggings, crop-tops, tiny yoga shorts, large hoop earrings and bangles. Whether or not you like the style, there is no doubt that Miami moms make quite an impression, and I sure do miss the fashion stimulation.

Although this may seem vain and trivial, I’m pretty happy that I grew up thinking mothers were multi-faceted, colorful, and incredibly glamorous and that “mom jeans” meant hip, sexy and worn with a 6-inch heel.

Levi's CEO Chip Bergh: 'Don't Wash Your Jeans'

Apparently, part of the Levi’s mantra includes not washing your jeans.

Chip Bergh, the CEO of Levi Strauss, recently spoke out about his laundry habits at Fortune’s Brainstorm Green Conference.

The conference, which challenges those highest on the corporate ladder to “take the corporate sustainability movement to the next level,” was the perfect place for Bergh to showcase his company’s fashionable take on living an eco-friendly lifestyle: “We are the ultimate in sustainable apparel,” Bergh said. “If you buy [our jeans] they will last a lot longer than most people’s waistlines will.”

Berg is making good on his advice, as he hasn’t washed his own jeans in over a year. While his statement is making waves, in reality, the company has been living up to such practices since 2011. According to the New York Times, Levi’s began “featuring stone-washed denim smoothed with rocks but no water” in 2011 while also encouraging consumers to wash less.

In a more radical call to action, denim environmentalists also suggested putting jeans in the freezer if they started to smell. Anderson Cooper and Tommy Hilfger are other interesting figures spotlighted in the “no wash” movement, although stylist and fashion consultant Stacy London has argued that a few washes per six months is probably healthiest.

While we’re all about being eco-friendly and saving the planet, what else are we supposed to do when our jeans get too loose to wear? We’ll just have to let you know when we take on this jean sustainability challenge ourselves!
